"INTO THE WEST" (2005) - "Jacob Wheeler and the Awareness of Self"
Tumblr media
"INTO THE WEST" (2005) – "JACOB WHEELER AND THE AWARENESS OF SELF"
Many people would usually consider the topic of Self Awareness when discussing New Age religions or Eastern mysticism. Characters from a Western television miniseries seems like the last thing anyone would think of when discussing the meaning of Self. Yet, a major character led me to consider this very topic, while re-watching Steven Spielberg’s 2005 miniseries about two families – Lakota and western Virginia - called "INTO THE WEST".
"Self" has been described as the essential self or the core of an individual. A person who has learned to live one’s life with a strong sense of Self is considered as someone who has achieved or come close to a level of self-actualization - namely, achieving personal growth through accepting the true core of oneself. If there is one character in "INTO THE WEST" who seemed to personify self-actualization, it was Thunder Heart Woman (Tonazin Carmelo and later Sheila Tousey), the Lakota woman who had married into the Wheeler family. I am not saying that Thunder Heart Woman was a person with no insecurities, personal demons or anything of the sort. But of all the major characters, she seemed to be more in tune of what and more importantly, who she was.
In the miniseries’ second episode titled, "Manifest Destiny", Thunder Heart Woman had seemed impervious to the Wheeler family's attitude toward her, during her immediate family’s short stay with her in-laws in Virginia. Even when faced with the disapproval of a German minister and fellow wagon immigrant called Preacher Hobbes (Derek de Lint), she remained impervious to his bigotry. At least according to her husband’s narrative. But this essay is not about Thunder Heart Woman. It is about one of the men in her life – the one love in her life, who managed to catch my attention. Namely one Jacob Wheeler (Matthew Settle and later John Terry).
The third of four brothers from a Virginia wheelwright family, Jacob Wheeler seemed very similar to his Lakota wife – the type of person that seemed to know his own mind. The miniseries’ first episode, ”Wheel to the Stars” revealed that Jacob’s Virginia family seemed to view him as a non-conformist . . . or oddball. He, in turn, regarded his hometown of Wheelerton, Virginia; his family and its profession with mild contempt. In short, this young Virginian was a fish out of water in 1825 America and he knew it. This would explain Jacob’s longing to see the world beyond his hometown and the eastern United States. He did not hesitate to express his enthusiasm for the West. After meeting mountain man James Fletcher (Will Patton), he immediately set out to achieve his desire to leave Wheelerton.
Possessing a talent for persuasion, Jacob managed to convince two of his brothers – Nathan (Alan Tudyk) and Jethro (Skeet Ulrich) – into joining his trek to the West. Jethro turned back at the last minute and Nathan ended up accompanying him. After Jacob and Nathan parted ways in St. Louis, the former caught up with Fletcher and famed mountain man, Jedediah Smith (Josh Brolin) and convinced the latter to allow him to accompany Smith’s expedition to California. I could probably list a number of examples of Jacob’s talent for persuasion, along with his exuberant and non-conformist nature. What I had failed to mention was that he possessed a strong and stubborn will to achieve what he desired. A perfect example of this was his determination to return to California after he, Smith and their fellow mountain men had been kicked out of the province by Mexican authorities. Not only did Jacob manage to achieve this goal, he did so at a great price. And yet . . . one of the interesting aspects of the Jacob Wheeler character is that despite possessing a strong will and extroverted nature, he also had certain vulnerable characteristics and insecurities. Especially insecurities. In both ”Wheel to the Stars” and ”Manifest Destiny”, Jacob’s relationships with his Wheelerton family and Thunder Heart Woman revealed just how insecure he could be.
Jacob seemed to have a rather peculiar relationship with his Virginia family. Despite regarding them with contempt for their provincial attitudes, he had also allowed their attitudes to bring out his own insecurities. His grandfather Abraham (Ken Pogue), his father Enoch (Serge Houde) and his three brothers – Nathan, Ezra (Joshua Kalef) and Jethro – either derided or teased him about his lack of interest in the family’s wheelwright business. And all of them viewed Jacob as a daydreamer with no sense of family duty or any common sense. The Wheelers have never hesitated to express their low opinion of Jacob’s desire to experience life beyond Wheelerton. I cannot help but wonder if the Wheelers’ contempt toward Jacob’s non-conformist ways had bred a sense of insecurity within him. Or if this insecurity was one of the reasons behind his desire to escape Wheelerton for the west.
It is possible that I may have stumbled across one result from Jacob’s less-than-ideal relationship with his Virginia family. I do not know if anyone else had noticed, but it seemed to me that whenever any of the other Wheelers teased, ranted or expressed contempt toward Jacob or his views on the West, he rarely bothered to defend himself. Jacob did not defend himself whenever his brothers mocked him at the dinner table.; when Jethro made the "tail tucked between your legs" comment, following Jacob’s return to Wheelerton in "Manifest Destiny"; and when Enoch accused him of luring both Nathan and later, Jacob to the West. Instead of defending himself, Jacob merely remained silent in an effort to ignore the hurtful comments.
However, there have also been moments when he did defend himself. Jacob made a snarky comment about his grandfather Abraham’s penchant for rambling on about his past as Revolutionary War veteran and the family’s business. And the elderly man reacted in such a vitriolic manner that I found myself wondering if Jacob had ended up with a new hole in his backside. When Nathan raged against him for helping an escaped slave named Ben Franklin (Sean Blakemore) in Tennessee, Jacob insisted they had done the right thing considering that Ben had earlier released Nathan after holding him hostage with a knife. And when Nathan lost his temper over Jacob’s refusal to follow him to Texas, the younger brother merely insisted upon continuing his intention to join Jedidiah Smith’s expedition.
One could only wonder why Jacob had rarely bothered to defend himself against his family’s scorn. Did he share Thunder Heart Woman’s talent for imperviously ignoring the scorn and prejudices of others? I rather doubt it. Whereas Thunder Heart Woman had seemed unconcerned by others, Jacob’s face tends to express his pain or embarrassment caused by his family’s attitudes. I suspect that deep down, Jacob longed for not only his family’s respect, but their acceptance of his true self. But unlike many people, he was not willing to change his nature for the Wheelers or anyone else’s acceptance.
Why did Jacob decide to return to Wheelerton with his pregnant wife and daughter after eleven years in the West? In his narration, Jacob claimed that he wanted Thunder Heart Woman and his daughter Margaret Light Shines (Elizabeth Sage, later Irene Bedard) to meet his Virginia family. Perhaps he was telling the truth. Yet, a part of me found that hard to believe. The moment Jacob began to enjoy his Lakota in-laws’ hospitality, he felt certain that his own family extend the same kind of warmth to his wife. And yet . . . he had insisted upon returning to Virginia. Why? Had Jethro hinted the truth in his "tail tuckered between his legs" comment – that Jacob encountered nothing but failure in the West and returned back to Virginia for a livelihood? Or was it something deeper? Perhaps a last chance for Jacob to seek final acceptance from his family? Who knows.
Whatever Jacob had sought in 1836 Virginia, he did not find it. His father Enoch revealed that the family’s wheelwright business had suffered a setback, due to the economic depression that struck the United States in the mid and late 1830s. And the Wheelers seemed no more closer in accepting Jacob for himself or his Western family. His cousin, Naomi Wheeler (Keri Russell) viewed Indians as non-human. His brother Ezra regarded Thunder Heart Woman as a mere "squaw". Naomi’s sister, Rachel (Jessica Capshaw), viewed young Margaret’s hand as a piece of dung. And Enoch seemed to act as if his new daughter-in-law and grandchildren did not exist. No wonder Jacob ended up complaining about the Wheelers’ treatment of his Lakota family.
Eventually, Jacob decided to take his wife and children and return to the West permanently – preferably Californa. It seemed the Wheelers’ continuing disregard toward them – along with news of his idol Jedediah Smith’s death – led to this decision. He almost seemed cold and distant toward his parents and Ezra. But he did not count on Jethro and his three female cousins’ decision to accompany him to California. Apparently, not all of the Wheelers viewed him as an oddball for his preference for the West. Jacob seemed heartened by Jethro’s decision to join him. And although Naomi, Rachel and Leah’s (Emily Holmes) decision to join the trek West took him by surprise, Jacob readily accepted their company. In the following narration, he came to this conclusion:
"I hope that I would prove equal to the responsibility I had undertaken."
I found this comment rather odd. Jethro and the three cousins had been determined to follow Jacob and Thunder Heart Woman on the trek to California, regardless of anything the couple would have done or said. Even Jethro had later pointed this out.
The next three years (1837-1840) must have been the best Jacob had ever experienced with any of the Virginia Wheelers. The three cousins – Naomi, Rachel and Leah – finally began to view Thunder Heart Woman as a member of the family and cherished her and Jacob’s three children (Abraham had been born in Wheelerton in 1836 and Jacob Jr. was born in Missouri sometime in late 1840). Jacob’s close relationship with Jethro seemed like a far cry from the conflicts with Nathan that marred his trip to the west back in the 1820s. One would begin to think that Jacob no longer suffered from any insecurity by this point. And yet . . . they only remained buried inside him, waiting for the right moment to manifest.
Tumblr media
In the end, it took the wagon train journey to California (dubbed "the Wagon Train of Doom" by me) featured in "Manifest Destiny" for Jacob’s insecurities to get the best of him. Upon their arrival in Independence, Missouri in the fall of 1840, the Wheeler family remained there during the winter before joining a California-bound wagon train led by one Stephen Hoxie (Beau Bridges) in the spring of 1841. Surprisingly, only Thunder Heart Woman seemed reluctant to leave Missouri. I suspect she had enough of being constantly on the move for the past several years. But the rest of the Wheelers, especially Jacob, seemed determined to head for California.
Once the Hoxie wagon company began their westward trek, everything seemed to be faring well. The weather seemed beautiful. Everyone seemed to be in good spirits – including the black family from Illinois named Jones that managed to join the wagon train without any opposition. Both Naomi and Rachel attracted the romantic attention of the train’s two scouts – 'Skate' Guthrie and James ‘Jim’ Ebbets (Ryan Robbins and Christopher Heyerdahl). This contentment finally ended when Thunder Heart Woman spotted wolves feeding off the corpse of a buffalo and when the train later crossed what I believe was the Big Blue River. The incident proved to be the first of two disagreements between the couple. Thunder Heart Woman viewed the wolves as a sign that the wagon train would come to a bad end. She insisted that the Wheeler family return to Missouri. Jacob dismissed her worries as superstition on her part. But the expression on his face clearly indicated his doubts on the wisdom of the trip.
Then the first disaster struck. One of the emigrants, a German-born minister named Preacher Hobbes (Derek de Lint), lost control of his wagon during the crossing. Distracted by the Hobbes family’s situation, Jethro nearly lost control of his wagon. Leah fell out of the wagon and drowned in the river’s fast flowing water. Although Hobbes received an angry response for his carelessness from Captain Hoxie, the Wheeler women’s anger seemed to be directed at Jacob for leading them to this western trek. The expression of guilt seemed very palpable on Jacob’s face, as Naomi demanded that he take the family back to Missouri. Leah’s death proved to be just the beginning.
The further west the wagon train traveled, more disasters followed. The emigrants were forced to deal with a severe thunderstorm and a cattle stampede that left the only son of a black emigrant named Absalom Jones (Neville Edwards) dead. Not long after the storm and the stampede, both Naomi and Rachel married two of the wagon train’s scouts, Skate and Jim. But that brief period of happiness failed to last when the wagon train attempted to travel through a pass. While traversing a pass, a wagon broke free, knocked Rachel down and ran over her leg, causing a severe compound fracture. The leg eventually became infected. Hobbes, the closest thing to a doctor available, tried to amputate Rachel's leg; but his efforts turned out to be clumsy and Rachel died before he could finish. Although no family member angrily demanded that return to Missouri, the expression on Jacob’s face obviously conveyed his feelings of guilt.
The final blow to Jacob’s disastrous return to the west occurred when Mrs. Jones died from cholera. Since the Wheelers’ wagons had been traveling with the Jones’ wagon at the back of the train, they had been exposed to the disease. Hoxie and the scouts forced the Wheelers and the remaining members of the Jones family (Mr. Jones and Sally Jones) to remain behind under quarantine while the main body of the wagon train carries on. Only Naomi was able to continue with the train, since she had been with her new husband. Jethro became afflicted with symptoms of cholera but recovered. Both Jacob and Thunder Heart Woman drifted into a serious quarrel, when he suggested that she take their children and attempt to find her Lakota family. Needless to say, Thunder Heart Woman took the suggestion badly and reminded Jacob that he should have listened to her warnings about the journey.
No new outbreaks occurred after Jacob ordered that all drinking water be boiled. The Wheelers and the Jones rushed to catch up with the wagon train, but discovered that it had been attacked by Cheyenne warriors. All of the emigrants had been wiped out, aside from Naomi, who first became a captive and later, a wife of a Cheyenne chief Prairie Fire (Jay Tavare). The Wheelers and the Jones families were also attacked by Cheyenne warriors. They managed to repulse the attack, but Jacob ended up seriously wounded by an arrow in his chest. The surviving emigrants tried to move on with a wounded Jacob, but the juts and bumps of the trail made it impossible for him to endure the pain. Instead, he insisted that Thunder Heart Woman, Jethro, Mr. Jones and the children continue west to California without him, since he would only prevent them from crossing the Sierra Nevada Mountains before winter. They left him behind with great reluctance.
Thanks to a fortuitous encounter with one of his brothers-in-law, Running Fox (Zahn McClarnon), Jacob survived his wound before continuing west. The period he spent east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains allowed him to wallow in loneliness and grief over the separation from his family. But he remained determined to find them. And it took him another four to five years before he finally did. Becoming a member of John Charles Frémont’s California Volunteer Militia during the Mexican-American War allowed Jacob to scour the region for signs or news of his remaining family. Five years passed before he finally came upon the ranch that Jethro and Thunder Heart Woman had settled. Jacob also discovered that in the intervening years, his brother and wife had considered him dead, began a relationship and had a child – a little girl named Cornflower. Devastated by this turn of events, Jacob decided not to reveal himself to his family. At least not openly. Instead, he left the wooden medicine wheel necklace that Thunder Heart Woman had given him when they first met to his youngest child, Jacob High Cloud. Another five years passed before Jacob finally reconciled with his family, due to the efforts of his daughter, Margaret Light Shines.
Ever since I first saw "INTO THE WEST" and especially the above mentioned scene from "Manifest Destiny", I have found myself wondering about Jacob’s actions. I understood why he decided not to intrude upon the family that Jethro and Thunder Heart Woman had formed upon their arrival in California. But why did he leave the medicine wheel necklace to young Jacob? Surely, he knew that his family would be aware that he was alive . . . and knew about their situation? Looking back on his action, it struck me as a very passive-aggressive on his part. He lacked the courage to face Jethro and Thunder Heart Woman. And yet, he seemed determined to thwart the happiness they had created . . . as if he was punishing them for continuing their lives without him. Or perhaps Jacob felt a great deal of envy toward Jethro because the latter turned out to be the one who successfully led the family to California, and not him.
Perhaps Jacob had always a passively-aggressive personality from the beginning. His relationship with his Virginia family struck me as being marked by a great deal of passive-aggressive behavior from the start. Jacob seemed determined to be his own man, whether in his enthusiasm for the West, his decision to leave Wheeler or join Jedediah Smith’s expedition over following his brother Nathan to Texas. And yet . . . he never defended himself in the face of their criticism. Instead, he resorted to resentful silence. Why did he constantly fail to defend himself? Was he merely trying to keep the peace? Or did some small part of him fear that his family may have been right about him? It seemed strange than many fans and critics of "INTO THE WEST" seemed to adore Jacob for his seemingly self-assurance and outgoing personality. At the same time, they derided Jethro for being an insecure loser in their eyes. I got the feeling that they were so busy either scorning Jethro or adulating Jacob that they failed to detect the latter’s personal insecurities and darker traits. And Jacob certainly had them by the bucketful.
Did Jacob ever overcome his insecurities? Perhaps. Perhaps not. I wonder if many are aware of this, but it usually takes an individual to overcome his or her faults during an entire lifetime. A good number of people never succeed in overcoming all of their faults. And since "INTO THE WEST" focused more on his and Thunder Heart Woman’s children in the last three episodes, audiences never discovered if he had overcome all of his faults and insecurities. Jacob certainly seemed more at peace in his old age than he did during his first forty years. Perhaps those years of solitude near the Sierra Mountains foothills helped him finally achieve some inner peace.

For Topsy's Skyrim OCs ask game, feel free to also include the opinions of any/all NPCs-Become-OCs and answer four or five you'd like to elaborate on the most!
Ohhhh dealer's choice, eh? Exciting! I will have Olur of Mor Khazgur answer these. [Skyrim OC Asks]
1. Which areas of Skyrim do they find most beautiful and most dangerous?
"Most beautiful is easy - Karthald region in the northern Reach, my home. It has everything you could want - high meadows, mountains, and Mor Khazgur is on the plateau above the Sea of Ghosts. We're far enough away from the main roads that few outsiders bother us, but only a few days' ride from Markarth, which means that traders who know where we are come by often enough. Easy access to the sea means we can always fish and hunt horkers and collect shellfish when game is scarce or crops have failed. We don't have to rely on trade or finding deposits or springs in the mountain tops to get our salt either.
"The place I felt the most danger in was Whiterun. My Legion training cohort was sent there to support several civic projects the jarl was funding. The mountains were so far away, I couldn't see them when inside the city and I would lose my sense of direction. Then out on the tundra in our camp, the sky was so large, there was no place to hide or take cover...it makes you understand just how small one orc alone is."
2. Which cities do they prefer to stay in and why?
"I've never been fully comfortable in cities - too much cut stone between your feet and the ground. There's always too much noise to hear what you need to hear. The city I went to most before I joined the Legion was Jehanna, which I suppose is technically in High Rock. There are a lot of other orcs there, and the clan grandmother came from, Fharun, are nearby. When I mention her name the vendors drop their prices and everyone treats me with a little bit more respect. It's pleasing."
Which cities to they avoid at all costs?
"I will never go to Riften again, if I can help it. The weather was nice, but the smell! My uniform reeked of fish and honey for weeks!"
3. What are their religious affiliations, and how does their worship (or lack thereof) affect their day-to-day life?
"I follow the Code of Malacath, like all orcs should. My grandmother taught Borgakh and I prayers to say to Malacath, and she is the one who reads the omens to determine his will. Because I can write so well, one of my duties is to maintain Mor Khazgur's Ledger of Grievances, to ensure we do not ever forget any wrongs done to us, and extract the appropriate Blood-Price. I hope to some day lead Mor Khazgur myself as Chieftain, and to do that I must never forget that above all else Malacath demands strength.
"Grandmother likes to tell stories of the folly of the orcs that want to become elves again, and worship Trinimac. I'm not sure if I believe her that Malacath himself punishes them, but it seems like a waste of time to try and go back to whatever our people were thousands of years ago. I like what we are now. Dwelling on the past is useless, and takes away from strengthening oneself for the future.
"When I was in the Legion, they gave us all amulets of Stendarr and one of the priests always said blessings of Stendarr over us. I wore it because it was expected, and if you went to weekly services at the temple you didn't have to do whatever scut-work the training officers would give you. Sometimes on holidays there would be food that was much better than what they gave us in the barracks. I hope Malacath had a good laugh at me eating all of Stendarr's sweetrolls after sleeping through his priest's sermon."
5. Would they be able to live off the land if they were lost in the wilds of Skyrim? How skilled are they at foraging and hunting?
"The day I can't make my way through any forest in Skyrim and find my way home by the sun and stars is the day they're putting me in my forge."
14. Who is their mentor? Who do they go to most for lessons?
"My grandmother, Sharamph, is the Wise Woman of Mor Khazgur. She's the one who taught me everything I need to know about following the Code of Malacath. When anyone in the stronghold needs advice on the Code, or what Malacath would have them do, they go to her.
"I used to think that everything I needed to know would be covered under the Code, but in the Legion I found that wasn't the case. Horsemaster Arvid, Marshal of the Legion's stables in Solitude, has probably forgotten more about caring for horses and mules than I will ever know. I'm glad I was able to work as a farrier under him. What he taught me has served our stronghold's beasts well."
19. How are they with money? Do they hoard, or do they spend until their pockets are empty and they have to find work again? Have they saved for any houses?
"I don't have much use for money of my own here in Mor Khazgur. When I was in the Legion, I learned about how to keep accounts for things larger than a single stronghold, but I sent most of my wages back to Mor Khazgur. If I ever leave, I have the right to take some of what I contributed with me, but I don't plan to. My skills will keep me clothed and fed, and I can always re-enlist - I would rather my coin stay for the benefit of my sister and the rest of the stronghold."

Thinking about the Ruby Vanguard as we wait that extra week for the beginning of the Solstice Showdown.
Some holes in the ideology Ludinus professes for the RV, the kind of people who would sign up.
Ludinus claims No Gods = No Fate.
Pretty sure that's a lie, seeing as Vordo the Fateshaper was devoured back during the Founding and Fate is still existent and a godly domain. It just got passed on to whoever had Death before the Raven Queen inherited. Now maybe if there's no other god to inherit the domain, Fate will disappear. But maybe it won't. Maybe it will just exist without a caretaker and shit will get really messed up and weird and the world will implode. I really doubt Ludinus/the RV knows for sure.
I'd also like to point out that if the gods controlled Fate, they'd know what Ludinus is up to because there it is, written in Fate. And considering they had the self-preservation to lock up Predathos in the first place, they'd probably wrangle some champions up to shut this shit down, or just Fate the RV to die horrible deaths (because they can't smite people of their own will anymore) before achieving anything, if they could force Fate.
And even if joining the RV cult, on it's own, freed one's Fate, I'd think gods controlling Fate would notice the people they're losing despite it not being their Fated time, look into it, and then throw champions at the problem until it ceases.
Considering there has been little divine intervention to stop the RV, just the least religious main-campaign CR party (least of all time goes to Calamity crew and all their Hubris) and the moon researchers they've teamed up with, I'd say it's pretty clear the gods don't actually stop a lot of mortal decisions from being made. They just guide champions towards interference for them, a la VM or M9.
Fate as a god's domain is more about stopping people from messing with what is than dictating what Fate shall be.
So yeah, that's why I buy the general view that Ludinus is in this because he can't stand the idea of a higher power than himself/that he can't usurp.
And there's probably others in the RV who are also signed on because they can't stand the idea of higher powers they can't usurp controlling them.
Then there's (probably) the Ruidusborn who are in it for Predathos. I would not be surprised if the Monster in the Moon is pushing the people connected to it to set it free. Or the Reilora were pushing to be freed from the moon prisoner alongside their creator.
But the majority are probably people like Tuldus: traumatized by extreme religious practices. Punishment doesn't create true piety, true believers, just a mantra to be spat back to preserve oneself.
I think the people of this mindset have got the wrong target, going after the gods, though. What they really want to dismantle is abusive and controlling clergy and/or congregations. The people who justify their terrible acts with "piety." But I can see the reasoning for why the likes of Tuldus may blame the gods: if the gods don't stop people from doing terrible things in their names (especially when they have the likes of Champions to do their will), then they must not dislike such practices, right? Never mind that the people doing these things are choosing to do them, will still be able to choose to do such things once "free," even if they need to find a new justification. It's the wrong solution to a real problem.
Also, for the belief Predathos won't destroy Exandria: "When the shark finishes eating the fish, it doesn't go after the plankton." Well maybe not, but that doesn't mean it hasn't swallowed or otherwise killed a bunch of plankton getting its fish. It doesn't mean the shark can't come back around when more fish show up, killing the new fish and more plankton. Because does the RV really believe that people won't try to ascend now that the gatekeepers are gone?
Really, the Ruby Vanguard is a mess.

Worldbuilding Wednesday prompt from @thetruearchmagos
Are there any cultures, groups, or other collections of people in your Worlds with identities or characteristics uniquely influenced by the sea? From religious beliefs to economic / social lifestyles, how have these marine influences manifested in this people's lives?
Had to put this on a separate post for (my) blog organization.
In the world of Orbis, the Iridescent Islands and the Damasqus Network are two groups of islands in opposite archipelagos.
The Iridescent Islands is quite rustic and more active at day. Markets line its white shores as boats return from fishing and ships dock full of passengers from the Metallurgen archipelago. While foreigners come and go around the beach, within the islands themselves are the locals wearing tight suits covered by colorful, billowy coats that almost match the little flags tied across houses, poles, and sign posts. The people adore long, wavy hair, and their stamina while swimming associates them with merfolk.
While the Iridescent Islands have small lighthouses, the beam that sweeps across its shores at night comes from the gigantic Tower of Topal on the shores of the mainland of the Psychedelfis archipelago. With only the moon, the stars, and the Topal beam as their guide in the darkness, the inhabitants of the Iridescent Islands would rather be indoors and enjoy a warm meal with family when the sun goes down.
The Iridescent Islands is not always a place one can call home. Due to the ongoing war between the Emerald Kingdom and the Platinum Fort, refugees flock the ports in search of asylum. Many are stranded, and the locals grow wary every day. With the backing of Kalei mages, the Island Council tries to manage the situation and resist pressure from the Emerald Kingdom's iron hand, but authorities can only do so much before the unrest turns into chaos.
Meanwhile, the Damasqus Network is a group of islands that do not have shores, but steep cliffs. Travellers must await the tide to bring them up to the vibrant communities that awaken at night. Fairs, parties, theater shows, and all sorts of entertainment draw income into the otherwise boring islands of barren trees, and periodic geyser springs. Their lively ensembles are an ode to the occasional schools of bioluminescent pods and fish that pass by the area, who they "join" by lighting bonfires along the edges of the islands.
As one's indulgence in fun can harm them, the Damasqus Network provides a plethora of options for curing and healing oneself. The best doctors of Orbis can be found among these islands, wearing black coats, thick feathers, and beaked masks - a rather unsurprising fact when a good majority of the population are vampires and wingeds.
Lately, the atmosphere has been tense. The Damasqus Network - lying between the Kingdom and the Auric Ranges where the Platinum Fort stand - is a sore eye for the generals who desire a strategic location for establishing operations. While Damasq mages are allied with the Kalei mages who have recently chosen to support Platinum Fort, the Fraterni Damasqus refuse to let their home become a war zone. While the higher ups are playing their silly games, the citizens continue to perform with the loud blasts of destructive alchemy and magic in the background, and wounded soldiers recuperate their health, their mind, and their personhood in the backstage.

The Pirate and The Dragon;
Tumblr media
Summary; otherwise known as the story of how Treycor Zagreus Adonis Fae-Artoas and Hannah Artemis Hook met, and how their friendship expanded into the stuff of legend over time. Requested by @crimsonstar2096 who is the creator and owner of Treycor. Trigger warning; Violence and descriptions of injuries. Child neglect, etc.
🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️
As a kid, you just kind of assume that your family's way of doing things is the normal way. And that your family will always have your back, Whether or not that's actually the case. But some kids learn early on, the hard way, that that just isn't that case.
Like Treycor did.
He was luckier than others and received the lesson rather late in life at seven rather than at three or four like everyone else. But that didn't mean it hurt any less when his sister told him that he couldn't hang around her crew anymore because he wasn't big and bad enough to, and that he had to get his own if he wanted any respect.
No, it didn't mean that at all.
So, he took her advice and looked around. Trying to find a way to join or make his own crew. And that's when he found the flyer.
Tumblr media
It was 3.
Treycor hurried towards the side of the isle that had the Hook inlet, knowing that this was his chance.
🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️
Treycor stared at the tiny six year old who was sitting in front of him. Then at the paper in her hand.
She was small and skinny with short, messy brown hair with a streak of white and a streak of blue on each side of her head. Her eyes were dark brown and she wore a little pirate outfit.
Her name was Hannah Hook and she had been sitting on a barrel behind a treasure chest desk next to the counter when he's come.
And when he announced that he wanted to join her crew, all she had said was "Okay. Sign here!"
He honestly didn't know what he'd been expecting. But it certainly wasn't this.
He had thought that he was gonna have to break in somewhere and steal somewhere to prove himself worthy. But no. All he had to do was sign the paper she was holding out.
Treycor hesitantly took it from her and began to read:
Tumblr media
He was surprised by how ..fair.. the terms were.
A fair cut of whatever loot was found, free health care, free food, a free bed, and protection for oneself and their loved ones?!
He had never heard of such a thing before!
Which meant that he just had to accept. Because there was no way he'd find a better deal!
Treycor smiled at her, signed, and shook her hand. "Okay, I accept your terms."
🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️
"You didn't have to do that" Treycor said, at age 9, wetting a rag with alcohol.
They were in the bathroom at Urusla's fish and chips. Hannah, now 7, was sitting on the sink, kicking her legs back and forth as she held another rag to her bloody nose.
Her knees and hands were all skinned up. Her goggles were broken, her eye red. A scratch on her cheek and tooth chipped. Both arms bruised.
But despite all that, Hannah smiled at him. Even though it clearly pained her.
"I promised..." she inhaled shakily. "That I would protect you. And I intend to keep that promise."
"But I'm older and your Quartermaster. That's my job" Treycor protested.
The younger just shook her head.
"No. We're crew. We protect eachother. That's how things are."
It was the first time Treycor ever heard those words. But it wouldn't be the last.
🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️
"Okay, I am fully convinced that you never graduated Pre school" an 10 year old, Treycor, sighed as he yanked on Hannah's legs.
Trying desperately to get her unstuck from the window she had crawled through after John and Luke dared her to.
9 year old Hannah was offended.
"Hey! I'll have you know that I'm smarter than kids my brother's age!"
Treycor raised a brow even though he knew she couldn't see it.
"Yet you do stupid stuff like this."
"Just shut up and get me out of here!"
"Okay, okay. Jeesh, someone is cranky.."
"You suck!"
"If I suck, then legally, I can just leave you here."
Hannah froze.
"You wouldn't..."
"You know I would."
Hannah began to squrim frantically.
"Alright! Alright! I take it back! Just get me out of here!"
"That's what I thought. " Treycor smirked and pulled.
🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️
Hannah (now 12) trembled as she packed her bag in the captain quarters of her ship, the Storm Bringer.
She had already talked with her family and her crew one by one about Maleficent's plan and how she was gonna be going to Auardon. Yet she still didn't feel ready to go.
Maybe it was because she didn't want to go.
But she had to. She didn't have a choice in the matter.
Because if she didn't, Maleficent would get mad and her friends and siblings would pay for it. And she couldn't let that happen. Because she was nothing without her friends and family. Nothing.
"Dude, chill. Everything will be fine." Treycor called out from behind her, causing her to jump.
"When did you get here?!"
"I've been standing here for the past 10 minutes " He leaned against the doorway, arms crossed and rolled his eyes in disbelief at her obliviousness.
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"I did. I called your name like 12 times."
"Oh. What are you up to?"
"I've come to tell you that you're freaking out over nothing. Your family will be fine. The crew will be fine. I'll make sure of it. And you'll be fine"
Hannah started to pace, practically hugging her bag.
Promethus was flying above her in circles, wanting to calm her down while Midas rested on her back.
"How do you know that?" She stumbled over her words a bit.
"Because I know you" Treycor replied. "You're a bad ass pirate captain with a Sliver tongue and a heart gold who always gets her way. You'll fit right in."
The brunette bit her lip, still looking unsure before her shoulders shagged. "You're right. I've got nothing to worry about. "
"Damn right I'm right. I'm always right. Now get going before you miss your ride"
Hannah smiled at him as she walked past, nudging him with her shoulder. "Alright Mr Quartermaster. Take care"
🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️
All of that had led to this very moment.
The moment he'd return the favor to Hannah.
He backed up as Harry yelled up at Audrey. He was being held back by a pale Uma.
His accent was so thick that Treycor couldn't understand him. Not that he could blame the older man, considering the sight that was above them.
There, ontop of the roof, was a possessed Audrey-- or Queen of Mean, as she called herself-- holding an injured Hannah captive.
Hannah was clearly trying to reason with her but she was too far up for anyone other than Audrey to hear. And she looked scared, confused, and... betrayed. Hurt.
Something that made Treycor's blood boil.
His captain, his friend, his soul sister... should never look that defeated and hurt.
He had never liked the look of that expression on her. Nobody who knew her well did. Because it just didn't fit her.
And anytime that look made it's way on her, Treycor wanted to hunt down whoever had put it there. But he had never been able to before, because when Hannah was truly hurt by people she cared about, she refused to admit who had done it.
But this time.
This time.
He could finally do just that.
He took another step back before bounding forward and jumping.
Treycor felt himself change as he flew towards the possessed princess, fire in his veins.
"RAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAARRRRR!!!!!!!!"
The sound he let out was like that of thunder. Loud. Startling. Deafening. And traveled all the way back to the isle as the ground beneath them began to shake.
Audrey stumbled, letting go of Hannah. And Treycor aimed himself at her before changing back, shooting forward and grabbing the staff-- knocking them both to the ground.
And like that, the battle was over.
And Audrey was out like a light.
🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️
Hope you enjoyed, @crimsonstar2096 . Sorry it took so long mate. I wanted it to be perfect.

Shade Lord Ghost Drabbles: Poisoning a God?
Summary: Augh! Ghost cooking! Now i cant stop thinking about a part 2, where maybe some random Bug similary to ones from previous chapters arrives few months later in Hallownest (after ghosts feasts become a regular thing-), hears of the void god („oh no! They’re void and a god so they must be evil!”) and comes up with a plan to poison ghosts meal (ah yes, poisoning a god) or just doing a good Xero on them, but when he arrives at the feast the big chair (i dont belive ghost would like having a throne-) is empty, thinking ghost is trying to have a grand entrance or smth he waits only for ghost to exit the kitchen and start putting plates infront of everyone and the only meal they eats himself (they a god so they doesnt need to eat) is some cookies Survivor or Hornet made for them
~
A god that hosted feasts, even if only occasionally as the mood took them, seemed too good to be true. Not because it was kind, many gods outwardly – and even sometimes genuinely – displayed kindness to their followers, but because it left them so open. The easiest way to kill someone more powerful than oneself after all was with poison. And the easiest way to administer poison other than being their cook was during a bustling feast.
It could far too easily be a trap. The Shade Lord was fishing for someone trying to poison them to make an example of. Or they were naive and hadn’t thought someone might consider such a thing and/or were just that confident in their power. If so, it was a well earned confidence if what Mari had heard about them was true. Even well-founded confidence could be exploited though, making it his best bet. All he could really do was hope it didn’t turn out to be a trap.
The hardest part was procuring a poison that not only would work on such powerful beings but was also strong enough to kill a god in a dose small enough to be easily hidden on one’s person. But being a goddess’ personal assassin had many benefits, one of which was access to such magic infused poisons.
Mari barely restrained the urge to finger that little vial hidden in a tiny pocket he’d sewn into his scarf; his disguise for fitting in with the Shade Lord’s followers. Almost everyone at the table wore one as they were supposed to represent the Shade Lord’s tentacles or something like that. Regardless it had been enough to get Mari in without suspicion, landing him the coveted spot next to the large chair that presumably the Shade Lord would sit in upon their arrival. With how early he’d have to arrive for this seat, the wait had been long but the table was full now so it had to be over soon.
The Shade Lord would arrive in a big showy hubbub that would cover up Mari’s slipping his little surprise into their food. It was almost too easy, hence his current nervousness. Was luck on his side or was everything about to go wrong? If so would he be able to get himself out even with his goddess’ assistance?
Worrying about it wasn’t doing him any good though. So he pushed those thoughts aside once more and went back to patiently waiting. He wasn’t as good at that as he should be given how long he’d been doing this so probably the practice was a good thing.
Finally, after what felt like another eternity had passed, that patience was rewarded. The Shade Lord came out, sliding along on a cloud of void fog and tentacles. Atop their head sat one of their supposed siblings; a hollow shell filled with animated void. Their four hands and a series of raised tentacles held plates piled with various dishes.
The hubbub mainly came from the followers raising to greet their god – Mari joining them in that of course – as the Shade Lord laid out the plates. No one took anything from them until the Shade Lord placed themselves in the chair at the head of the table. So close to Mari the cold emptiness that made up their being sent a chill through him.
He fought it off as he waited for them to pull some of that food they’d laid out back to themself. But… they didn’t. They just sat there while everyone else started eating.
“Is it good?” Their voice was deep and hollow of emotion.
“It is divine as always your Graciousness.” Keeping his gaze firmly on his own plate, the Shade Lord in his periphery, Mari didn’t see who spoke but their voice was dripping with admiration for their god. Their ‘review’ would be worthless because of it, everyone’s here would be. The Shade Lord wouldn’t care though, like most gods they just wanted praise.
And that’s exactly what they got as others in the crowd piped up with similar praise. To fit in, Mari did so too. It wasn’t even false praise either, it tasted good, surprisingly so.
Maybe now the Shade Lord would partake. It’d be harder to slip the poison in with most of the hubbub having died down but still possible with how close he sat to them.
Except they hung around for a few more minutes before moving off the chair and leaving. Damn it!
“Why didn’t the Shade Lord eat any of it?” Mari asked to the bug sitting next to him.
“Oh, they almost never do. I don’t think they can taste anything.”
“Why do they bother to cook feasts then?” Why would someone who made a feast not partake in the fruits of their labor? Especially it had to be to impress their followers, something they’d do better at if they stuck around with them for longer.
“For fun.”
Mari took a breath to ask ‘what kind of god does things just for fun’ but bit back on it. That would reveal him as an outsider and thus raise suspicions. There was no way it was just ‘for fun’ though because that was stupid. Though really the why of it didn’t matter nearly as much as it making Mari’s poison plan that much more difficult to pull off. He’d have to figure something else out.

Short story - Tips for a Gentleman [CW - murd3r]
One must always start eating one's food from the outermost fork when with company. When eating fish, one must strive to use two forks, as proper etiquette states. When one feels like one’s food tastes wrong, one should discreetly spit one's food into a napkin. So as to not harm the feelings of one’s host, one must then say ‘apologies, I found a hair’. One must then, respectfully, switch to simply drinking for the rest of one’s meal.
When one’s host starts foaming at the mouth, one mustn’t sit there idly. One must call for a medic, try the Heimlich manoeuvre on one’s host, anything one possibly may to extend one’s host’s life. When, inevitably, one’s host dies, one must tell the police everything that happened during the evening, without excluding any information. One must mention that one is a well-renowned detective, and that one’s host was one’s childhood friend, John, that one only just regained contact with. One must say that John made dinner by himself, and that no-one had contact with the food one and one’s friend ate that night.
When the police propose that one joins the case, one must accept, for John. One must personally take part in the autopsy of John, and one must notice the obvious, tattle-tale signs of nightshade poisoning. One must also take notice of the test lab results from the analysis of both one’s and one’s host’s fish. One must not let it surprise oneself, that one’s food was as well laced with nightshade.
When one returns home, one must always walk on the right side of the street, avoiding walking under ladders. One must always carry upon oneself an umbrella, in the case of a shower. When rain inevitably comes, one must open one’s umbrella, so as to not soak one’s ash coat. When one sees a dark figure in the corner of one’s eye, one must take note, and speed up one’s pace. When one finally arrives at one’s flat, one must lock the door twice and close all the windows for good measure. One must be aware of the fact that one lives on the second floor, and no danger should reach oneself from the windows. However, one should also be aware that being safe never harms oneself. When one sinks into one’s favorite armchair, one may take a long sip of one’s coffee, as one ponders the untimely end of John.
When one feels a pair of hands enclosing around one’s neck, one must not panic. One must not panic. One must try one’s best to pry the intruder’s hands off one’s neck. One must defend oneself. One must take the empty bottle of wine that stands next to one’s armchair, and one must smash it over the intruder’s head, and when one feels the hands around one’s neck disappear without a trace, and when one gets up to see there is no intruder, one must clean up the shattered glass. One must turn in earlier despite one’s doubts. One must pray, to whomever is listening.
One should never be late to any social gathering. One should instead strive to be early, or at least on time. When one goes to Sunday mass, one should partake in it, regardless of whether one believes in God. One should take off one’s cap when entering a church. When one prays, one should lift one’s head this time. One should turn to the direction from which one feels someone’s eyes on oneself. One should look to the left pew and notice a dark, obscure figure, peering their black eyes into one’s very soul. It is them. It is them. It is they who were in one’s flat last night. It is the killer. They are out in the open. They will strike again. Run. Run. RUN
When one shows up to the police office the next day, one mustn’t share one’s experience with the police. One must know that they would not believe. One must be aware that the police are narrow-minded people, who would instantly send oneself to a mental institution. No, it is safer this way. One should instead cover one’s bruises on one’s neck with a thick scarf. In the case that someone questions one peculiar attire, one must state that one has a cold. One must take many notes, interview various suspects. One must oneself be certain in one’s beliefs; that the one knows who murdered one’s friend. One must simply muddle through the day, aware that something is coming. Someone is coming. Run.
One must uphold oneself in the utmost hygiene. Before going to bed, one must take a shower. As one brushes one’s teeth, one mustn’t look into one’s mirror. It poses too much of a risk. Do not look up, do not look up, do not look up. One mustn’t look up, one mustn’t. One looks up. It is inevitable. One sees. One sees something that shakes oneself to one’s very core. Something hideous, indescribable. One cannot escape the endless pits of the figure's eyes. And suddenly one feels… overcome, by a feeling of peace. This is inevitable. You did well, now rest, my child. You are free. Do not resist. You are free. You are free. It is over. You did well. Rest.
You let out a final breath.

Been a while since I posted any of the kel dor conlang, soooo here's a nice big summary talking about pronouns in keldeorinyaa. :D
There are five pronoun sets in common use:
Neutral (sapient animate, used by adults)
Diminutive (sapient animate, used by children)
Strong (sapient animate, used with family, to flirt, and to pick a fight)
Animate (non-sapient, used for animals)
Inanimate (used by droids and for non-living things)
Generally, they show up in the topic of a sentence, once or twice at the start of a conversation. They're frequently dropped after that, especially where context makes the meaning obvious.
Case is not marked on pronouns at all - this is done by postpositional grammatical particles. Pronouns do not reflect anyone's gender - the three sapient-animate sets display social status and attitude more than identity.
NEUTRAL PRONOUNS
These are the 'standard' set, used by most adults in most situations. They're not so much polite as a neutral option, appropriate in most everyday interactions.
⸻1st Person
Tumblr media
Singular er is equivalent to I/me. Dual en/lan and plural egen/lagen are likewise equivalent to we/us.
Neutral pronouns are part of the 5th noun class (eyaan sadinan, used for all sapients), but do not pluralise according to class rules (eg. the dual and plural forms of er are not erka/erke but en/egen.)
⸻EXAMPLES.
"I am tired." ⸻ "er di ksaligheni." "We (two) ate fish." ⸻ "en di yanttoo ikazdal." “We all ate fish.” ⸻ “egen di yanttoo ikazdal.”
Keldeorinyaa distinguishes first-person dual and plural pronouns by clusivity—whether ‘we’ refers to both speaker and listener (inclusive) or includes the speaker and a third person, but not the listener (exclusive). en and egen are inclusive; lan and lagen are exclusive.
“We two (without you) went to Coruscant.” ⸻ “lan di korasanti de nadal.” “We (without you) went to Coruscant.” ⸻ “lagen di korasanti de nadal.”
⸻VOCAB NOTES.
ksaligheni — to be weary, to overexert oneself. You’ve had a full day and you’re ready to have a good long rest. Technically a verb; think of ‘I need a rest’, or ‘I tired myself out.’ yanttoo — fish, collective noun. Dorin’s fish tend to be sinewy and full of bones, and the usual kel dor practice is to just eat the bones as well. nadal — past tense form of nadi, to go/come/move about. Always comes with a word or phrase that names/describes where you’re going/have come from; in this sentence it is korasanti, Coruscant.
⸻2nd Person
Tumblr media
Singular ke is equivalent to you, dual kan/lakne might be equivalent to you two, and plural kalak/kakne might be equivalent to you all.
⸻EXAMPLES.
“You are my friend.” — “ke di tvassiyar.” “You two are pests and troublemakers.” — “kan di tawidawi ivooliyetka.” “Have you all eaten?” — “kalak di ikazdal kya?”
Second-person pronouns can also be used to make a clusivity distinction; in this case, the inclusive dual/plural kan and kalak indicate that all of a group is present and being addressed. Exclusive lakne and kakne indicate that the people being addressed have been singled out of a larger group, or that one or more of their group are not currently present.
Typically, exclusive lakne/kakne are used by teachers addressing two or more of a class of students, or more broadly by community leaders and other authority figures speaking to subordinates, usually in the context of assigning, delegating, or checking up on tasks to be done. Swapping between inclusive and exclusive pronouns may be done in the same conversation in regards to the same people; for example, a manager at work checking in on your progress with a task and then joining in on the general conversation.
“Have you two finished?” — “lakne di anzandi kya?” “You lot have finished early.” — “kakne di nenssoode anzandal.”
⸻VOCAB NOTES.
tvassiyar — friend, specifically your own personal friend; the concept of friends in general is tvassiyaan. tawidawi — usually a quantifier meaning ‘too many’, but also used for household pests and, colloquially, for noisy energetic children. This speaker has used the neutral pronoun rather than the diminutive, so they’re probably talking to nearly-grown teenagers. ivooliyetka — troublemaker (affectionate). From ivooli, trouble you’ve made yourself, and the gentle agent suffix -etka. The non-affectionate version is ivooliyaan. nenssoode — early, ahead of schedule. anzandal — past tense form of anzandi, to finish a task, to complete.
⸻3rd Person
Tumblr media
Third-person pronouns drop the inclusive/exclusive distinction, since the topic is now removed from both speaker and listener. Singular ze is the equivalent of she/her, he/him, they/them, and any other pronoun set you might use when speaking about a person, living or dead. Dual zan might be translated as those two, and plural ussa might be they or they all.
⸻EXAMPLES.
“She is waiting for dinner.” — “ze di meoykapsa iya mattaki.” “He is running.” — “ze di ssagiyar.” “Those two are going away.” — “zan di kon de nadi.” “They will help.” — “ussa di aysakitta.”
⸻VOCAB NOTES.
meoykapsa — night meal, evening meal, dinner. The main meal of the day. mattaki — to wait. Use of the present form implies momentary rather than ongoing relevance. ssagiyar — ongoing form of ssagir, to run. Use of the ongoing form implies that the running is probably planned for exercise’s sake rather than, say, running to catch the bus. aysakitta — future certain form of aysaki, to assist, to help.
DIMINUTIVE PRONOUNS
Diminutive pronouns are used primarily by children, and occasionally in informal settings by adults who are trying to sound cute, non-threatening, or possibly obnoxious. The transition from diminutive to neutral pronouns typically occurs around age 16/17, once the child’s tail has been fully absorbed during the third-stage growth period. Children are referred to by these pronouns, and use them among themselves; past a certain age, they switch to using neutral pronouns for adults.
Neutral pronouns are part of the 6th noun class (halmi sadinan, used for children and small precious things), but do not pluralise according to class rules (eg. the dual and plural forms of imi are not imigha/imikoy but imer/mani.)
⸻1st Person
Tumblr media
Singular imi is equivalent to I/me. Dual imer/lam and plural mani/lemi are likewise equivalent to we/us.
⸻EXAMPLES.
"I saw a holo." — "imi di holo ksanadal." "We (two) went to the forest." — "imer di kalsala de nadal." “We all are going to Dorshan.” — “mani di na deorssan i naditta.”
Diminutive pronouns also maintain clusivity distinctions. imer and mani are inclusive; lam and lemi are exclusive.
“We two (without you) saw a shooting star!” — “lam di tol a ksanadal!” “We (without you) ate flowering urchin for breakfast.” — “lemi di sikapsa kyol kena ikazdal.”
⸻VOCAB NOTES.
ksanadal — past tense form of ksanadi, to see. Tends to imply you didn't pay much attention to it or weren't thinking about it, probably watched it for something to do. For more close observations, use ksameli. kalsala — forest, woods, a biome dominated by trees. Somewhat noteworthy on Dorin, where trees frequently get flattened by storms. deorssan — Dorshan, the largest city and de facto capital of Dorin. The name means great mud; it's located on and around the edges of a gigantic tidal mudflat. naditta — future certain tense of nadi, to go/come/move about. Paired with na intentional particle, meaning this is a planned event. tol — meteor, bolide, shooting star. Particularly exciting on Dorin, where dust clouds often obscure the stars. sikapsa — breakfast, firstmeal, more loosely anything you eat in the morning. kyol is a regional variant of the ksoli instrumental particle, here indicating what was eaten. kena — flowering urchin, a very common seafood all over Dorin. Basically a sort of sea urchin with long fleshy grabbing tendrils.
⸻2nd Person
Tumblr media
Singular ani is equivalent to you, dual alan/lakne might be equivalent to you two, and plural alak/kakne might be equivalent to you all.
⸻EXAMPLES.
“You are too loud.” — “ani di tawidawi kaagi re.” “You two ate all the snails!” — “alan di naidaa deolorre ikazdal oro ya!” “All of you, listen up!” — “alak di kaalidi ge!”
Second-person exclusive pronouns take the same form in the diminutive set as in the neutral set—potentially to practice usage of a less-commonly-used but socially and grammatically important function. Children use these almost solely in play to begin with.
“You two made a real mess of it.” — “lakne di khooto ravedal me.” “You lot will make the bread.” — “kakne di itek gelitta ge.”
⸻VOCAB NOTES.
kaagi — a loud sound. Used as an adjective here (see the re qualitative particle). naidaa — quantifier meaning all of a given group or class. Whatever you’re talking about, the sentence applies to all of it. deolorre — snails (plural), class noun. Snails on Dorin can be quite large and fast-growing, and many species are fundamental to kel dor cuisine. oro ya — the negative form of the ya moral particle, used to pass judgement on an action. Dad found out you and ur brother ate all the snails and now he’s pissed… kaalidi — to listen, to pay attention, plus the ge imperative particle, which turns the verb into an instruction or command. ravedal — past tense of ravedi, to make a mess. Used with me judgemental particle for emphasis, so whatever task was given here, it’s been fucked up big time. itek — bread (Dorin style). Dorin bread tends to be flat, not risen much, and can be sweet or savory. The definition includes a lot of things we might call pastry. Making it is a simple task, often delegated to children to keep them out of the way. gelitta — future certain tense of gelissi, to make. Used for things you physically make. gelissi is a slightly irregular verb; the usual i-verb conjugation here would be gelissitta, but ss /ʃ/ and tt /tʃ/ make such a similar sound that the third and fourth syllables merged.
⸻3rd Person
Tumblr media
Third-person diminutive pronouns again drop the inclusive/exclusive distinction, since the topic is now removed from both speaker and listener. Singular mez translates to they/them, dual mizan to roughly them or those two, and plural ssuma to they all.
⸻EXAMPLES.
“They didn’t do it.” — “mez di orodal.” “He helped the tooka.” — “mez di tooka aysakal.” “Those two live in Dorshan.” — “mizaan di deorssan de legantiyeh.” “They all haven’t got a garden.” — “ussa di tessala opali orodiyeh.”
⸻VOCAB NOTES.
orodal — past tense form of orodi, a verb form used broadly to negate ideas and deny your own involvement in actions. Roughly equivalent to ‘did not’. legantiyeh — ongoing form of leganti, to occupy/inhabit. tessala — garden, orchard, cultivated forest. Broadly, an area where the growth of plants is being deliberately managed for some reason. opali — to keep, to maintain, to save for the future. Implies deliberate effort; not used for something you put away and forgot about. Gardens take opali because maintaining them requires work. ‘They’ in this sentence may have land for a garden; they just aren’t taking care of it or using it.
STRONG PRONOUNS
Strong pronouns are part of strong speech (rrumyarinyaa), a register of keldeorinyaa used most traditionally to signal intimacy, among close family and friends. Over time, usage of strong speech expanded to encompass flirting — an implication that the speaker might like to know the listener more intimately — and picking a fight (probably as a deliberate breaking of the taboo). Usage of rrumyarinyaa in these less traditional manners is limited, as only context can tell you which one is intended—most people will refrain unless they’re very sure they’re giving off the right vibe.
Strong pronouns are part of the 5th noun class (eyaan sadinan, used for sapient people), but do not pluralise according to class rules (eg. the dual and plural forms of tveta are not tvetaka/tvetake but udi/dev.) The clusivity distinction does not appear in strong pronouns.
⸻1st Person
Tumblr media
Singular tveta is equivalent to I/me. Dual udi and plural dev are likewise equivalent to we/us.
⸻EXAMPLES.
"I asked for alcohol." — "tveta di nikta a kyalaiya tya." "We (two) might go to Dorshan next year." — "udi di lelanggavari deorssan i nadiya dekho naa." “We all slept well.” — “dev di kohti aliikal naa.”
⸻VOCAB NOTES.
nikta — alcoholic drinks. Very strong (by human standards) as a rule. kyalaiya — strong form of kyalai, to ask. Tense information sometimes disappears in strong verbs, usually where it's implied in context. tya — desirability particle, used to indicate something you want or would like to happen. lelanggavari — next year. In formal grammar this would be lekde anggavari; strong speech often involves contractions of this sort. nadiya dekho — future uncertain tense + strong form of nadi, to go/come/move about. The speaker is entertaining the idea, but hasn’t decided either way yet. kohti — good, high-quality, a general expression of approval. aliikal — past tense form of aliiki, to sleep.
⸻2nd Person
Tumblr media
Singular tatva is equivalent to you, dual uda might be equivalent to you two, and plural dima might be equivalent to you all.
⸻EXAMPLES.
“You haven’t got a house.” — “tatva di ta lenka orodi.” “You two need to leave!” — “uda di kon de nadi ge!” “All of you, please help with the cooking.” — “dima di ge paksi aysaki.”
⸻VOCAB NOTES.
lenka — house, dwelling. Typically large, may host multiple extended families. Dug into ground in many locations. paksi — to cook, to prepare food. Used with the ge imperative particle; this is an instruction, not a request. (ge and the la request particle are considered equally polite; there’s no need to soften ge the way ‘please’ is used in English.)
⸻3rd Person
Tumblr media
Singular tvaza is equivalent to they, dual azdi might be equivalent to those two, and plural degi might be equivalent to them all.
⸻EXAMPLES.
“They are an absolute disaster.” — “tvaza di datsiganyetka naa.” “Those two are very handsome.” — “azda di kagatsi naare.” “I heard they all missed the train.” — “degi di tse veyrrewani lessoode me.”
⸻VOCAB NOTES.
datsiganyetka — ‘absolute disaster (affectionate)’. From tsiganyi, an event which causes major negative consequences indiscriminately, plus the intensity marker prefix da-, plus the gentle agent suffix -etka. This might be a very clumsy or socially inept person, or someone with incredibly bad luck, but you feel sympathetic towards them rather than annoyed. kagatsi — emphatic form of katsi, meaning beautiful, handsome, or aesthetically pleasing in general. Can be used on all genders. Given the strong pronoun in the sentence, this specific usage could be translated as ‘hot as fuck’. tse — hearsay particle, used to indicate that the information you’re talking about is second-hand and you can’t personally swear by its accuracy. veyrrewani — train, more or less. From rrewani, a single-file column of linked vehicles, plus veyni, an adjective meaning fast or swift. lessoode — late, after the scheduled time. Plus the me judgemental particle; the speaker here is probably gently mocking the subject.
INANIMATE PRONOUNS
Inanimate pronouns originally were used only in the third person, to refer to inorganic items and plants. Development of AI capable of holding a conversation led to the coining of first and second-person inanimate pronouns, to avoid the awkwardness of combining pronouns from two different noun classes.
Inanimate pronouns are part of the 10th noun class (nin sadinan, used for random items and things that don’t fit in the other classes), but do not pluralise according to class rules (eg. the dual and plural of dessa is not dessari/dessarie but deggada.) Unlike other pronoun sets, the dual and plural numbers are merged in first and second-person (third-person dual and plural remains distinct). Clusivity distinctions are not made.
⸻1st Person
Tumblr media
Singular dessa is equivalent to I/me. Dual/plural deggada is equivalent to we/us.
⸻EXAMPLES.
"I am a protocol droid." — "dessa di purotnisen dorroy." “We were made on Corellia.” — “deggada di correli de gelissal.”
⸻VOCAB NOTES.
purotnisen — partial loanword: protocol + nisen, law. Really only used in the context of offworld things. dorroy — loanword from droid.
⸻2nd Person
Tumblr media
Singular deona is equivalent to you, dual/plural ggedina might be equivalent to you all.
⸻EXAMPLES.
“You will be fixed soon.” — “deona di maakedi kyakohgitta.” “You all work on the ships.” — “ggedina di nakssi de kokiyeh.”
⸻VOCAB NOTES.
kyakohgitta — future certain tense of kyakohgatti, to be fixed/repaired. nakssi — ship. Can mean spaceships, water ships, or atmospheric transports. kokiyeh — ongoing form of koki, to work, to labour.
⸻3rd Person
Tumblr media
Singular nin is equivalent to it or that one, dual nan might be equivalent to those two, and plural ninan might be equivalent to those.
⸻EXAMPLES.
“It is pale blue.” — “nin di khapu re.” “Those two cost five hundred credits on Bilbringi.” — “nan di bilibringi de kohgopali kedit a ninteral.” “Those won’t grow in this climate.” — “ninan di nakyaran ade boli oroditta.”
⸻VOCAB NOTES.
khapu — pale blue, light blue, shading into purple. Dark blues are kher. kedit — loanword, from credit (originally borrowed as keredit) ninteral — past tense of ninteri, to barter, to trade. Also used for buying things outright; this speaker technically did trade five hundred credits for whatever they’re showing off. nakyaran — local climate, from proximal particle nak + yaran, weather. ade — locative particle, delineates environment or conditions under which an action or event occurs. boli — to grow. oroditta — future certain form of orodi; more or less ‘not going to happen’.
ANIMATE PRONOUNS
Animate (non-sapient) pronouns are used for animals. There is no first-person, on the basis that anything capable of comprehending language enough to understand pronoun usage is almost definitely sapient.
Animate pronouns are part of the 7th noun class (tanssir sadinan, used for terrestrial animals). They do not perfectly pluralise according to noun class rules, but are closer to it than the others. Clusivity distinctions are not made.
⸻2nd Person
Tumblr media
Second-person animate pronouns are not used in formal or neutral speech; they are exclusively used in the sense of sentimental babytalk directed at a beloved pet.
Singular gita is equivalent to you, dual tanta corresponds to you two, and plural tenanta might be equivalent to you all.
⸻EXAMPLES.
“You are so small!” — “gita di giya naare!” “Time for bed, you two.” — “tanta di aliiki loy naa.” “Why must you all eat so much?” — “tenanta di kya tawidawi ikazdizi me?”
⸻VOCAB NOTES.
giya — small. Addition of the naare emphatic-quality particle makes it more like ‘very small’. loy — time, particularly the present moment. kya — question particle, sort of a verbal question mark. Usage of kya + the me judgemental particle is super common in rhetorical questions; the speaker knows the answer and is resigned to it. ikazdizi — habitual form of ikazdi, to eat. This speaker’s pets are big eaters, perhaps.
⸻3rd Person
Tumblr media
Singular gi is equivalent to it or that one, dual tan might be equivalent to those two, and plural tenan might be equivalent to those.
⸻EXAMPLES.
“It looks healthy.” — “gi a katigati ksameli naa.” “Those two have been traded.” — “tan di ninhayal.” “Those haven’t got enough water.” — “tenan di torowi yan tyagi.”
⸻VOCAB NOTES.
katigati — healthy, vigorous, living well. ksameli — to observe. Used for observations you've thought about, and descriptions in a fairly literal sense: “This is what it looks like to me.” ninhayal — past tense form of ninhayi, to be bartered or traded. The passive verb equivalent of ninteri. torowi — quantifier meaning ‘not enough’, ‘rare, or ‘only a small amount’. yan — water. tyagi — to need, to require. The formula "torowi [x] tyagi" is commonly translated as "needs more [x] than it has."

Decorating a Cape Cod Bedroom
Before the joy of adoption we purchased a delightful Cape Cod-style home. It functions bedrooms upstairs even as downstairs, one bed room doubles as an office. The house though snug exudes a cozy charm boasting excellent hardwood floors and a space. That while small is just the right size.
The standout characteristic we cherished approximately the residence changed into the uncovered beams within side the upstairs bedrooms. However the unique architectural design with slanted ceilings and minimal traditional wall space approximately three feet poses a challenge for decorating.
Initially, the second upstairs bedroom was rarely used, serving as a guest room just twice. When our adoption enterprise cautioned putting it up as a nursery to exhibit to capacity birthmothers we embraced the idea. Despite efforts to create a neutral animal-themed nursery with borrowed décor. It did not evoke the love I hoped for.
In a quest for inspiration. I turned to the internet searching for decorate Cape Cod bedroom. Disappointingly there were limited impressive results and I discovered our Cape Cod’s design was not standard. The imposing ceilings presented a decorating challenge.
However, the exposed beams sparked an idea a fish net. When we discovered we have been bringing a infant home we started there. This post is for those seeking ideas on how to decorate rooms with slanted ceilings much like mine without the historical reference.
