Would you like to take a few moments to feel very powerful?
Go to the website of your local library.
Find their online resources- for my library it is under “resources”, then “online partners.”
First of all, there is likely an online digital library that is far larger than any one building could hold- you’re welcome.
But what WE are looking for is something that mentions “periodicals.”
Look for “Marvel.” Look for “EBSCO” look for “Explora.” Any of those will do, and I am sure other areas have other names for their search engines.
The point is you click over and find yourself looking at a database for encyclopedias, magazines, articles, journals and more. A research database.
My dude- my literate civilians- my people who thirst for knowledge-
This is holding the collective academic knowledge of the world in your hands.
I am currently looking at the US census for my county, with another tab open to collegiate scientific papers.
Like- this is ALL the stuff they say is behind paywalls and hidden behind the absolute JUNK Google spits out.
I’m pretty sure I can-
Would you look at that? 😁
New York Times- articles in the last couple weeks, from US and international versions (see pic below- check the dates)
They opened up to full text, with related articles from other publications on a list to the side.
THIS is the power they are hiding from you, and why they are slashing funding to Libraries.
I have not felt so powerful since college, when I had easy access to research databases like this.
You know… I don’t think I could even get to as much then????
Go use your library! Gain knowledge! Fight Power!
You’re welcome. ☺️

#public service#public library#online database#knowledge is power#I feel like a god of knowledge from a folktale#it’s all RIGHT THERE#I just need to have some idea what I am looking for

I have been informed that Reddit has found my story and are being super Reddit about it. Quick looksee of the comments revealed a bunch of people saying it was fake because [insert misunderstanding of how bacteriophages work]. Say its bullshit, whatever, but the being confidently absolutely wrong part is whats getting to me
#sitting in a corner rocking in a straightjacket: its reddit its reddit theyre just worse tumblr#but yeah i can respect disbelief. i cannot respect acting like ur also in a lab studying bacteriophages and still saying theyre dangerous#but also like. yeah its real actually. these kinds of studies are done in universities across the world#look through the notes and also my asks and you'll see a lot of other people who worked on similar studies!#there are full databases both online and physical. there are thousands of these. tens of thousands probably i havent checked in a bit#(paper i'm writing is about a different class of phage. not the one i drank. i cannot include taste data for this one o7)#but yeah#is it really such a surprise that one of those people working for this mass survey#eventually#for science#did a taste test.

it’s so funny the complimentary quotes i have found from david about roger are like lengthy and in depth and it’s not that roger never compliments him, there are some good ones!!! but like one of the quotes from roger literally just says “david is great guitar player” 💀 which is just a very funny contrast to david having like multiple paragraphs in various articles where he is praising roger lmao
#lena.txt#me when i'm normal#i’m doing stuff lori ~thangs~#roger waters#david gilmour#pink floyd#watermour#otp: our roles were complementary#some of these quotes are fucking me up tho man#like mostly the ones from david i cannot deal#i’m gonna probably post them soon it’s just so annoying trying to properly source them#there are like no scans of most of these interviews#it’s just on like some website or progarchives but probably bc most of them are from the 90’s and 00’s#like they’re definitely real someone made a great list of most of these quotes but i just wish they had the physical prints#i can find all of them in various places online but it’s never in a scan or sometimes an article that’s blocked by a paywall#but i will also link the database that originally posted and found a lot of these quotes

If you know how to do it you can use someone’s phone number to find their full legal name and home address. It’s just a bit of Google and knowing what websites stores this kind of info. Saw your tags asking how a phone number could verify someone’s age
So, I appreciate you dropping into my askbox to pass that info on - genuinely, it's kind of you - and I can see how my tags came across, but what I actually meant wasn't 'how can you find info on someone just with their phone number??' -- I actually do exactly that kind of thing in my day job pretty regularly, and I have to conform to a lot of real strict ethic constraints that uh, bluntly, random discord moderators...do not.
What I was actually getting at is the fact that, assuming the hypothetical server is just using a phone number as age verification (and doing data broker/google search on that), how in the hell is it controlling for someone doing what people under the arbitrary age limit du jour have been doing since we started implementing this sort of check, ie, lying like rugs and supplying info for someone in their family/social circle instead who is older than [whatever age].
like. sure. maybe you get a phone number for age verification. awesome. plug that into your data broker/google/etc of choice, run your searches, and ok, it belongs to jane smith, 38 years old, accountant who lives in ballarat, she's totally fine to join the 18+ server! come on in jane, the smut is plentiful and the doves are extremely dead. Jane smith has a kid. jane smith's kid is 15. jane smith's kid isn't allowed in the server, because it's an 18+ only server.
jane smith's kid almost certainly knows their mum's mobile number.
how the hell can Hypothetical Server Mod control for 15 year old jane smith's kid putting in jane smith's mobile number instead of their own? and also, separately, how the hell is HSM dealing with the many -- many many many -- different privacy laws around the globe?
not just in terms of handling that sort of information on people (and also requesting it in the first place!), but also just. some countries you can get so much fucking info on someone! (the US. I'm talking about the US.)
some you can't. because privacy laws, because the info isn't publicly accessible, because it's not online and is only in hard copy at the local government office, because it's collated but only in a nonenglish language, because it's geolocked-- etc.
also, like. even if the hypothetical phone number brings up someone in the US, and also your hypothetical mod team has decided, y'know, fuck privacy laws, security of information and data ethics can take a long walk off a short pier, we're keeping this server 18+ or dying trying!
data brokers aren't...actually consistently what you would call...super accurate, or like, accurate at all. if you have a unique name, yeah, sure, you're probably kinda fucked! (assuming you're in, again, somewhere the data brokers focus) but like. if you're named something a little more common - say, james smith, or maria sanchez in the US- uh. well. there sure are a lot of people you could be, and some of them - most of them! - are over 18.
and ok, sure, a phone number is (usually) only associated with one person, but. you can get a lot of false positives, false negatives, and straight up 'we don't know 🤪', the latter of which is sometimes hidden by the databrokers going 'our best guess is that this person is: An Age!! somewhere between 0 and 200 years old. 😇'
again, I use this stuff for work, I can tell you exactly how inaccurate it can get as soon as you throw something like 'not based in the US/UK' or 'uses a nickname/multiple name formats' or 'isn't super online' or 'older than 65 and not turbo wealthy' at some of these - I've had more than one confidently tell me that [my wallet name] is an accountant based in darwin who makes horror films in alice springs on the side, and also, is 26, and had 2-3 kids with her husband Lauchlan.
literally none of these facts are true. like. even vaguely.
and that can of worms doesn't even get into if someone has requested to be removed from data broker databases and/or takes online privacy Very Seriously and/or is just fundamentally ungoogleable, which is...more common than you'd think. less common than you'd like, but more common than you think, even before google started enshittifying itself out of existence.
which is why when you're trying to do things like prove your identity to uhhh goverments, banks, etc, they want multiple forms of ID, one of which is usually a photo ID, none of which anyone should be sending to a random on discord, or, frankly, asking for from a random on discord, both bc my god privacy and security risk but also like. handling that information can actually have legal requirements!
anyway. extremely long ramble on the failings of databrokers over, I appreciate you reaching out to help explain and it was very kind of you anon, sorry that I have. uhhhh kind of a lot of professional feelings about data privacy and basic social engineering, by which I mean saying 'no I'm totally 18 pinkie swear' in the grand tradition of teens wanting to get into age locked areas ever, your forebears lied on LJ so you could lie on discord.
#waters words#also I have failed utterly at sleeping so. uh. *fingerguns* sorry if this is totally incomprehensible.#also yes some of these are more accurate than others etc etc you SHOULD keep your data locked tf down#and request to be removed from databases where you can#but like. y'know. there are varying ranges of how much info is on you#and also. age verification is just. it doesn't work.#you basically cannot guarantee it for something online unless you're a government department#and even then. only specific government departments.#also I will own that I am somewhat biased about this#both bc. professionally I know what these tools can usually do and also how much that costs#and bc of *what* I do and what I have previously done I am fairly easy to find on some parts of the internet#assuming you have a couple of (specific) datapoints about me.#but also. I am very difficult to google‚ generally‚ even with that info#(also yes I *am* one of said forebears who lied on LJ. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯#sometimes you are 14 and carefully sprinkling in mentions of Adult Things like your coworker who has the most annoying habits#in between reading/writing/discussing filthy smut of your anime blorbos or your LOTR blorbos or your torchwood blorbos. etc.#it was what you did! you kept your mouth shut and you did your best to be passably adult.)

My Thoughts on Popular Personality Websites
Inspired by conversations happening in the comment section of this post (shout out to @istj-mbti and @flayedsheep )
16 Personalities
Ah, 16 personalities, the enemy of the MBTI community… I’m joking… kind of. In all seriousness though, 16 personalities is really more similar to the Big Five personality types, than it is to MBTI. It can be a great tool… just not for understanding MBTI.
If you take it, you might get an accurate type, but more often than not… you won’t. I’m an INTP, and for the longest time, I always got INFP or INFJ on this test. My ISFP friend and ENFP friend both got INFP, and my INTJ friend has gotten variations, from INFJ, INTP to his actual type.
It has a big intuitive bias, and even though most of the MBTI community rejects this website, I definitely feel like this website is responsible for the intuitive bias present in the community. The biggest flaw however, is the disregard for cognitive functions.
And I get it. Cognitive functions are complicated and not everyone wants to sit down and learn the cognitive functions, and they really wanted to market this test for general audiences
I do think that alot of people who get into MBTI, start with this test, because it is so universally used in schools and jobs and stuff.

Personality Database
I have mixed opinions on PDB. Hypothetically, it’s a great place for discussions, when it comes to fictional characters, but like most MBTI forums it can turn sour very quickly, and it’s filled with people that have varied understanding of MBTI or enneagram.
Like, you’ll have a lot of adults who have been into MBTI for years and have a strong understanding of all the types, you have people who are just learning what cognitive functions are, then you’ll have teenagers who have just taken the 16 personalities test.
So in general, typings on that website are very hit or miss, but it’s a really great place to start when I’m unsure about a character typing, and want to see arguments other people have. However, I really hate when people use the typings on that site as the end-all-be-all of character types.
I mean, look at this?

Anna and Mirabel? ENFPs? I don’t have a super popular opinion on Anna’s typing but… ENFP?! Really? Also, how tf is Mirabel ANYTHING but an Fe user?
I agree on the consensus for Mulan though.
Sarkinova.net
I do think that out of the majority of the MBTI tests online, this one is the most accurate, because it takes cognitive functions into account. However I do have a few concerns with it, the first being its so long lol.
I know that they want to get the most in depth understanding of a person, but a lot of the times, it just feels like they are asking the same questions over and over again, but with different wording, and that can make it frustrating, and a lot of the time, I don’t finish it.
Not to mention, even though this one is more accurate than most, there are always flaws with these types of test. No test will be in depth enough to understand you enough as a person to give you an accurate type. This is another test I’ve taken multiple times and have been given a different type.
Though I will give the test credit, this one has been given me my actual type before… so at least there’s that. I do think if you’re going to take a test, this one is a good one to take.

MBTI Online
No judgement… but I am begging people to not pay 60 dollars for this test. You can find ones that are just as good for cheaper, or even better yet, free. This test isn’t going to give you anything any other test will.
I do know someone who spent the 60 dollars, and still got mistyped by it sooo… yeah. If you really want to take it, by all means, go ahead, I just wouldn’t.

Me: Woah, based off the title, this journal looks like it would be a perfect source for my paper. May I see the article please, EBSCOhost?
EBSCOhost: Of course! Here you go!
Me: Oh! Um…thank you, but this is just the abstract…do you have the actual journal, too?
EBSCOhost: Oh. No. I don’t have it. Lmao. But here’s a link to the journal for you!
Me: Ah, cool, thank—Hey, this website wants me to pay $30 for this journal?
EBSCOhost: That’s my final offer. Take it or leave it. I cannot move mountains for you.
UPDATE: I figured it out. Everybody say “thank you jstor,” lmao
#sillyposting#grad tag#I am forcibly removed from the premises#for context EBSCOhost is an online database for academic journals#that you can access for free using your school’s login#all of the databases pull this stunt lmao I’m just picking on EBSCOhost#taunting me with journals I can’t have…sad!#update: the funniest thing is finding an article like this in one database#it not being there#and searching the title in a different database and g finding it#so silly

No, that 8-year-old regular human child would NOT be a self taught master hacker who can hack into 1) The Government ™️ or 2) The security program of an adult whose LITERAL SUPERPOWER is INTELLIGENCE. No, that 8-year-old regular human child would ALSO NOT beat SUPER POWERED ADULTS who have been training their craft OVER A DECADE in a fight.
#A note to authors#I know the plot would request it#But PLEASE think about what is possible#You won’t start coding before you can write all your letters#If you need your character to do something WILDLY above their skill level structure around it#Need a child to hack into a government database? Give them an online friend who can do so.#Oh but later plot would need him to have no support? Online friend died in the meantime#Do you get what I mean?
