a post-airing interview from kobayashi yasuko (scenario writer) and matsuda satoshi (ren).
there's nothing particularly earth-shattering revealed in it, but it's nice to hear about how the character is thought of by those who developed him.
[screenshots and textdump under the cut, series stills added as supplement]

12/19/2002 Interview with Yasuko Kobayashi and Satoshi Matsuda
Kobayashi: Ren can't be a totally cold person Matsuda: He's trying to be hard but can't quite be completely, that's so Ren.
Editor: In the beginning of the series, how did you feel when, after you wrote the script, Matsuda-san was chosen to play Ren Akiyama?
Kobayashi: I think it was when I was writing the scenario for episode 1 and 2, I first saw his photograph. "He fits the character well," was my thought. In the picture, his hair was dyed? It wasn't black.
Matsuda: It was white.
Kobayashi: But then there was nothing out of place about him, as an image.
Editor: Until the relationship between Shinji and Ren was created, did you have trouble writing the script?
Kobayashi: Not really. but I rewrote the fight scene in front of the mesh fence in episode 3 or 4 many times. Ren doesn't want to confront someone head to head, so I had to substitute it with an object, like the 30,000 yen debt.
Tumblr media
Editor: On the 11th episode he loses a part of memory and wanders off, the scenes where he walks through all those places like Omote-Sando where he fought in his past made an impression.
Tumblr media
Matsuda: At that time, a lot of things I didn't know kept popping up and it was surpise after surprise.
Kobayashi: Ren had so many things in his past.
Matsuda: In the beginning, I think when we were choosing costumes at the Ooizumi Studio taking. When we met each other, Director Tazaki said Ren's past was so much a mystery so he asked me to suggest all kinds of ideas. So I worked hard and wrote everything I could think of on paper, and gave it to the director and producer.
Kobayashi: Something like that happened? I didn't know.
Matsuda: After giving it to the director, I asked him if I wrote anything wrong to please let me know, but he said nothing. In my view I was trying to make it into a cohesive shape and fix any errors I might have made.
Editor: After that, Eri regains consciousness, Ren gets nervous as opposed to his usual contained self, and starts picking fights everywhere.
Tumblr media
Matsuda: He gets slapped by Yui.
Kobayashi: That was Stage-director Ishida's idea. Although it seemed weird, we just wanted to have Ren beat someone.
Matsuda: Ryuuki or Zolda wasn't a good idea.
Kobayashi: That's when we chose Odin. Although I feel sad for Odin. Matsuda-kun, did you expect that scenario?
Tumblr media
Matsuda: I did, that's why when I get a new script, I am very interested in reading it. I don't know if my guess will be right or not, but I wonder what's going to happen at the end. Things like that.
Editor: I thought in the beginning Yui and Ren were going to have a relationship?
Matsuda: She's like a little sister to him.
Tumblr media
Kobayashi: There's no emotion of romantic love. They are tied together with trust, I guess. I was writing a story for when Ren and Yui first met, but it never came up.
Editor: I think the relationship between Ren and Shinji, how it got closer or farther apart, the dramatic tension throughout the year was most interesting.
Kobayashi: But the two didn't have much play time.
Matsuda: You're right.
Kobayashi: I didn't want to dismantle the tension between them, even if one of them wanted to joke around, it didn't catch the other. The theme was the two not getting along so their conversations were never really able to be fun.
Matsuda: There were some in there.
Kobayashi: As for Ren, even if Shinji comes close, he doesn't care for him. Most people would just give it up, but Shinji is different.
Matsuda: That's why he can't forget about Shinji, and he has to look at him in a different way.
Kobayashi: And so Ren can't be a totally cold person.
Matsuda: He's trying to be hard but can't quite be completely, that's so Ren. That's what I like about him.
Kobayashi: In a lot of places, that comes out.
Matsuda: Like how he shows his vulnerability, when he knows Shinji can't see him.
Tumblr media
Kobayashi: When Ren's depth is presented, Matsuda-kun gives us a soft, tender expression. Almost as if he'll start crying. It's only a little, but....
Matsuda: Really?
Kobayashi: About in tears should I say? Like when Shinji has found something, you suddenly realize it.
Tumblr media
Matsuda: Is it?
Kobayashi: That's "Ren" I think. As though we can see his true character under his mask? It wasn't like that in the first few episodes. It's just that he's so human like, and honest. He can't accept someone's death calmly. He can't be the cool one.
Matsuda: That's what makes Ren's character so human.

jdorama 2022 spring season
Okay I know I said I was going to do a post-season review but the two opening episodes I've watched this season got me excited! (*I just remembered I also watched Shoujiki Fudousan but that was a big meh)
Mirai he no 10 Count | 10 second countdown to the future Stars: Kimura Takuya, Mitsushima Hikari
A middle aged man stuck in the casual job pool is asked by his old high school's boxing coach to coach their boxing club.
That was the synopsis, but it's far more interesting than that, although sadly the ratings didn't reflect it (11.8). Kirizawa was a 4-time boxing (?national) champion in high school but stopped boxing in uni after he was told by doctors that he was getting retinal detachment from the sport. He dropped out of uni because he was on a sports scholarship. He married, but his wife seems to have passed away, and he's been stuck in retail hell since.
The thing with Kimura is...he's always great in whatever role he gets, but he's also rather indistinguishable from role to role, but he's clearly done his research here. Kirizawa opens with "I don't care if I die tomorrow, I'm ready to die today", and all the signs of depression is there. He's quiet, flat, apathetic, and he barely meets people's eyes when he talks. Kimura has played a lot of loners or social oddballs, but this is the first time he's played one with such dense sadness. Mitsushima Hikari plays the classic overly enthusiastic female sidekick (in these shows), but she does a considerably more nuanced job than a lot of her contemporaries.
It's rare for mainstream J-drama to portray mental illness without descending into hysterics, and I really, really hope this show does a good portrayal of a depressed man slowly finding new hope.
Motokare no Yuigonshou | Ex-boyfriend's Will (12.1%) Stars: Ayase Haruka, Ooizumi Yo
Kenmochi Reiko is a young ruthless, sharp-tongued lawyer of a big firm whose motto is "I don't accept any cases that produces a loss". One day, she finds out that her ex-boyfriend had passed away and wrote a will that said, "I leave all my assets to the one who killed me".
It has been amazing to watch Ayase Haruka's growth through the years, and these days she gets a lot of these strong-willed, capable women who are as kickass and nuanced as male main characters, with a riveting plot supporting her, and I love it. Between her and the radiant Yoshitaka Yuriko they've been owning the career women roles. Kenmochi could have been easily dislikeable, but Ayase still doesn't manage arrogance or bitchiness very well, which I suppose is to her advantage, because she's made the character softer than she would have been on paper. I have a giant soft spot for Ooizumi You (and Ikuta Toma) so I know I'm going to love this already.
So far, the premise reminds me a lot of "Knives Out", although this is based on a recently published Japanese novel. It's also reassuring because that means the ending will tie things up nicely instead of falling apart as sometimes Jdramas can do. The first episode ended strongly with a great hook, and it's definitely got my interest.

Do you have any predictions/guesses of what other Tribe Nine tribes could be?
Chuuou: No idea because Shinagawa already covered businessmen and Setagaya already covered money.
Shinjuku: Maybe something of a slut tribe referencing Kabukichou's nightlife.
Shibuya: Gyaru/skateboard punk aesthetics, see TWEWY for reference.
Toshima: My image of Ikebukuro is way too colored by Durarara to have any real value, but trying to distance myself from that, I guess they could have a fujoshi tribe settled in Ikebukuro's Otome Road.
Bunkyou: Academic nerd Tribe settled at Tokyo University's campus, easy.
Meguro: Uh, mad artist Tribe from the Liberal Arts University?
Arakawa: Only ward without a Starbucks. Only ward without a Thirty One Ice Cream. Only ward without a Mujirushi. Only ward without a highway. The Tokyo-Yokohama-Touhoku train line crosses Arakawa without a single stop in that ward. Only ward in the Yamanote circle without a train to Yokohama. One of the only two wards without a Book Off. One of the only two wards without a Kaldi Coffee Farm. The low-quality hotel slanders. The memes about Arakawa not being part of Tokyo. The Arakawa River flood in 2019. Arakawa has such an amazing history of getting the short end of the stick that it needs to have a poor butt monkey Tribe. I'm feeling the vibes of Miwa from Jujutsu.
Sumida: That's a tough one. Sumida has a lot of eccentric sightseeing spots, like the Super Dry Hall or the Sky Tree, but they don't have a distinct aesthetic and identity as Taitou. I guess they could be the weirdo Tribe, but I don't know what flavor of weirdo. Something more colorful than Oota is a given, but what next?
Koutou: The Trash War was such a historical event for the ward that I guess they could go with a clean freak Tribe, idk.
Nakano: The only notorious thing in Nakano is Nakano Broadway. I really can't see what other options Too Kyo has. But I also have no idea what a Nakano Broadway-themed Tribe would look like.
Sugitami: Uh... take Kouenji's nickname of "Japan's India" super literally. I really can't come up with anything.
Kita: Kita has a huge history of its youth moving to less marginalized regions to the point the ward is practically occupied only by senior citizens. Make it the grampa Tribe. The poster we saw has some really old characters, so they could very much be Kita's players.
Itabashi: Is there even anything in Itabashi?
Nerima: That's another one that's hard to get ideas for. I guess it can be the kid Tribe in reference to Nerima being the newest ward? Make them middle and high schoolers from Ooizumi Academy for the meme.
Katsushika: Kochikame references. We know Kodaka well enough to know this is unavoidable.
Edogawa: Completely out of ideas. With Itabashi they could make a Tribe of exaggeratedly normal people to illustrate the lack of anything notorious, but Edogawa doesn't have even that.

I love a manga that acknowledges foreign communities in Japan.
*For those who don’t know, Ooizumi, Gunma is one of the most ethnically diverse places in Japan. Roughly 20% of the residents are foreign citizens. Most are Japanese Brazilian, but there are also people from Peru, China, India, Nepal, the Philippines, etc. Meanwhile, Shin Okubo is known as Tokyo’s Korea Town, and Shinjuku saw an influx of Nigerian immigrants in the 90s, as they found work in the late-night entertainment industry. Futsusa refers to Fussa, Tokyo, which is where the United States Air Force Yokoto Air Base is located, hence there being a lot of Americans there.
