want to make generative art
use processing, get angry at lack of reusing code and IDE support
switch to p5js, get angry at lack of types
try p5js and typescript
get EXTREMELY angry trying to get multiple sketches set up in a way that doesn't make you write a tsconfig.json file for every single subdirectory
i hate javascript so much it's unreal. they should make processing in a way that's good

happy birthday! that dither scale you made back in the summer - was that a 4x4 bayer matrix? Also, what image editing software do you use? and for your maquina do mundo, do you have any systems in place for further generation on an extant dataset, such that you could grow an extant world or even specify city locations and build the world around them?
ok lots of questions!
for drawings i use Krita. its open-source and easy to use. for coding i used to use processing, a version of Java with amazing documentation, but now i do everything in C++, using the openFrameworks library
i assume you mean this dither scale. at the time i indeed tried some dithering algorithms but i prefer the Floyd–Steinberg methods. this one instance is a set of tiles. the algorithm averages the luminosity of a small portion of the screen (i think 8x8 pixels) and replaces it.

im not sure what you mean datasets. extant is a funny word tho
the World Machine always generates maps from scratch and then simulates populations based off the existing resources (currently the only resources it looks into is land/sea and rivers).
the starting location for each population is hardcoded, tho it tries to find the best place near it. im currently developing a way to organicaly evolve the population across the map, using the amount of neighborhood tiles in a city and the amount of other cities its connected to, to decide if a city should expande, send migrants to another city or creates a new city
theoretically i could make it load an existing map and keep evolving that, or make it so you can pick the starting locations of each population. however that is not my objective and as such not something im focused on doing
this is going to be my final project for college, and it should run completelly autonomously

And yes, I was lucky to enter a very long residency of six years at the Google Arts & Culture Lab, which I just stopped in December. And I was able to focus entirely on that, so that was really really really nice. And of course some crazy, unexpected things happened. For instance showing my hacky openFrameworks visualization of artworks to Steven Spielberg and James Cameron at TED. It was a bit random but it happened. So that was really an unexpected journey through the corporate world of big FAANG companies. I was able at the Google Arts & Culture Lab to really apply machine learning to interaction design. This is a project called Portrait Matcher which is very similar to Sharing Faces from Kyle McDonald but here applied to artworks. And it was fun, it was nice. But it felt a little bit gimmicky, a little bit— The connection with the artworks was a bit shallow and I wanted to see if there was a way to create a deeper connection with artworks and using the face. And so that was in 2015. The FaceNet paper was out but there was no public implementation of it. But being at Google, I was able to use their internal implementation because it’s Googlers who made this paper. And so it was crazy, I was able to just put all the artworks of Google Arts & Culture through the model, get the embeddings, and then do nearest-neighbor search from any image.
From a talk by Cyril Diagne recounting his jobs from artist, to design professor, to a Google residency and being the main developer behind that famous Google Arts & Culture TED talk, then creating his own AI company and selling it to Stability.ai

My new song METEOR is out now on Sensing Waves. It expresses the heavy feelings created by unexpected events that spiral into a deeper sadness. The song’s first recordings were created in 2018. To trigger different workflow ideas, and after feeling overwhelmed with too many electronics, I simplified my production and turned to one synth. I pressed record and put down layer after layer. I sampled and resampled the audio to make soundscapes out of the synth melodies. Returning to this project while experiencing long covid, I finally finished Meteor, nearly 3 years later.
The audiovisual release features a full music video by Esther Bogorov. It too was a long project, built over three years of change and conversations. The visuals are a pursuit of patterns of movement through which a new space can evolve. Using code and natural building materials, Esther researches and designs visual narratives and narrative landscapes.
