hi there! im mia :) im a computer nerd with too much time on her hands.

im making this post to bring a project of mine into the world; a fully opensource and collaborative collection of online tools. this will grow over time, but for now, there is one thing active and two planned. (read on below)

a nextcloud instance! currently offering a bunch of very useful things:

50GB of free cloud storage

a Markdown notetaking tool

a shareable, open calendar

a photo gallery

web bookmark storage, and

some organisation and collaboration tools.

many of the cloud storage services we rely on are corporate, and require exorbitantly priced subscriptions. alongside that, data on them is often subject to a huge array of impenetrable terms/conditions.

what makes this different? firstly, your data is controlled by you. it is entirely encrypted on disk and can only be decrypted with your selected password. you own the data the same way you would were it on an external hard drive or flashstick.

secondly- its free! while you can pay 20$ once off or 5$ a month to upgrade storage quota and support the project, the core of it is entirely and utterly free to use.

what's matrix? i am absolutely sure you've heard of IRC- internet relay chat. im also sure you've heard of discord.

matrix is a modern federated chat protocol- if you took the best of IRC, and you took the best of Discord, and combined them into an opensource and *free* protocol for real-time messaging? that's matrix, baby!

matrix functions similarly to the fediverse (more on that later). when you sign up, you select a homeserver, which is the infrastructure your account is hosted on. your homeserver determines who you're federated with, your most easily accessible spaces, and the little tag at the end of your name.

so what's matrix.calicocore going to be? a homeserver! the idea here is to bring communication and community into our hands, and away from the hands of big tech corporations who really don't care about us. it'll be federated with other spaces and servers, and run collectively.

if you've ever used mastodon, fedi.calicocore will be a server compatible with it. this is still in the very very early stages as a project, so i cant detail much, but stay tuned.

things to note, disclaimers, etc

this project is in its early days. i cant guarantee perfect stability, though it has been tested and run for a few days already. please don't expect a perfect replacement for existing services YET.

secondly, in regards to calicodrive; your data is fully encrypted in two ways, both within the nextcloud instance and on the physical spinning rust. this means if you majorly forget your password, there's a possibility of losing it- but that trade-off is worth it for the security.

Keeping your data secure is tricky. Every time you send a message electronically there is a chance of digital eavesdropping. There is not such thing as total security— your goal is to minimize risk.

Literal and Figurative Bugs

As more people install ad blocker and opt out of data collection what are advertisers going to do? Stop collecting every shred of data they can about you? That sure doesn’t sound like capitalism. Turning to shady data collection by legally separate 3rd parties? That sounds a bit more likely

So in come bugs, which are small, cheap data sniffers that crawl themselves into place, collect data until their storage is full, crawl back to a public network and upload your cache. Repeat

They come in hundreds of varieties— colors, features, specializations. Most look like some variation of beetle (a good design is a good design)

They get past digital security by crawling past physical security. They are not looking at what sites you visit— they are clinging to your laptop cloning your entire hard drive. It latched on to your purse when you set it down grabbing coffee, and now you can’t get them out your apartment. You smashed a few and keep seeing more, so you are certain they built a Queen (you found the remnants of your old phone— they must have stripped it for parts)

You also learned you can’t just stomp them and throw them away. You broke the shell but the data is still there. And turns out they don’t just clone their bodies— they clone their data. So they all have your data. And they are going to sell it.

How is this even grey area legal? Because it is anonymous. They don’t target, they infect. The data is random and disorganized. Overwhelming noise to signal ratio. They are supposed to scrub all identifying details, bank info, etc.

So the reality is that it is horrific and predatory but hugely beneficial to advertisers so regulation is minimal and the legal battles protracted.

Oh, and part of the reason it’s so hard to control is that it is an opensource project. The software is on github and parts off the shelf. The hundreds of varieties of the hundreds of competing companies, trying to out perform each other, trying to snipe data from each other.

But no one is sure who wrote the original program (the github author claims to have found it on a forum and the thread gets more tangled from there)

Channel vs Group- Telegram allows its user to create channels to broadcast (you can subscribe certain channels to keep up with the latest info) and groups for group chat (pretty much like FB or Line chat room but allows up to 200,000 members)  I think we can have multiple groups for like cc release, roleplay, challenges or events, basically everything we have with Discord, and at least one channel as TS3 bulletin, broadcasting the latest news in the community. Each simmer can also set up their own channels & groups to interact with their followers.

Search and categorize by tags- We can use tags to sort out the cc like what we do with Tumblr. Moreover, Telegram provides a cross-channel/group tag search system. 

Powerful Bot-This is probably the most innovative advantage of Telegram. Bot can help you with all kinds of tasks, even more useful than Discord.

FreeNAS Nedir?

FreeNAS kesinlikle kullanmanız gereken opensource bir storage yazılımıdır. Hatta zaman geçtikçe aslında bir storage markası olmaya kadar ilerlemiştir. Freenas ilk olarak 2005 yılında Olivier Cochard-Labbé tarafından kendi file storage ihtiyacın karşılamak amacı ile yapılmıştır. FreeNAS o dönemde yapılırken, FreeBSD üzerinde geliştirilmiştir. Hatta FreeNAS ismide aslında buradan esinlenmiştir. O dönemlerde bu şekilde bir ürün çok çok fazla olmadığı için bu projeyi duyanlar hemen bu projeye ilgi gösterir ve FreeNAS ile ilgili bir canlı topluluk oluştu. Böylece FreeNAS gereçek bir ürün olarak şekillenmeye başladı. File Storage ihtiyacını karşılamak için oluşturulan ürün kısa bir zaman içerisinde, file sharing, media streaming özellikleride eklendi.

2010 yılından itibaren Cochard-Labbé, FreeNAS projesini devam ettirmek için artık yeterli zaman ve kaynak sağlayamadı, bu yüzden kontrolünü genel olarak open source diye tabir ettiğimiz açık kaynak yazılım desteği ve FreeBSD desteği ile tanınan bir şirket olan iXsystems’a verdi. FreeNAS, home ve SMB gibi ortamlarda tercih edilirken daha büyük ortamlarda kullanılmak üzere çıkarmış olduğu ürünlerde bulunmaktadır. Örneğin TrueNAS isimli ürünü ile  kritik BT ortamında bulunan ihtiyaçlarınız karşılayabilirsiniz. TrueNAS kurumsal düzeyde bir depolama yani storage’dır. TrueNAS sayesinde, failover, performans ayarları, raporlama ve hem donanım hemde yazlım seviyesinde 7/24 destek ve bakım alabilirsiniz. Ancak yazımın başında da belirttiğim gibi FreeNAS’ın ismi artık TrueNAS Core olarak değişecektir. Ancak enterprise müşteriler için TrueNAS yine kullanılmaya devam edecek.

Ben bu yazımda FreeNAS Nedir? hakkında bilgi vereceğim, TrueNAS’ı ayrı bir makalede anlatırım eğer merak eden olursa 🙂 FreeNAS’ı aslında FreeNAS yapan yani başarılı bir opensource storage haline getiren ZFS ‘dir. ZFS diye burada bahsettiğim aslında dosya sistemidir.

FreeNAS’ın temel özelliği ZFS’dir (veya “Zettabyte” File System). Başlangıçta Sun Microsystems tarafından geliştirilen ZFS , büyük depolama kapasitesi ve silent data corruption, volume management ve RAID 5 “write hole” gibi birçok depolama sorununu ele almak için tasarlanmıştır.

ZFS’nin yazma üzerine kopyalama teknolojisi, çok etkileyicidir çünkü bu teknolojiden dolayı performans alınmaktadır.. Veriler diske yazılana kadar data block’lar güncellenmediğinden, tipik RAID write hole sorunu ZFS için geçerli değildir. ZFS ayrıca, snapshot alındığı sırada mevcut olan dosyaların bir parçası olan blokların silinmesini önleyerek çalışan bir snapshot özelliğini de destekler. Bu bloklar daha sonra değişmediği sürece, snapshot’ı  korumak için neredeyse hiç alan kullanmaz. ZFS deduplication’a benzer bir şekilde çalışır ve hangi bloklarda hangi blokların kullanıldığı tabloları korur.

Raspberry Pi: A music player!

Since some of you might be unfamiliar with such a device, I will try my best to be as detailed as possible.

Things you will need:

Raspberry Pi 3 (any model will do: A / A+ / B / B+). I used model B (v1.2) for this project. I would recommend you to purchase a case for this device. This is mainly because the mother board is completely exposed and an accidental fall might result in the dismantling or breakage of crucial components. 

A speaker with 3.5 mm headphone jack to stream music from the Pi.

A SD-Card with a minimum storage of 8 GB and preferably class 10 to install the Raspbian firmware.

Either a  PC or Mac to download and install the Raspbian firmware on Pi.

A HDMI cable to display the Raspbian software and configure the set up.

Monitor/TV to display the Raspbian software.

A mouse and USB keyboard to input the commands.

Wi-Fi USB Adapter to have internet access.

Lastly, a USB Sound card to switch the audio output.

Initial setup of Rasberry Pi:

First and foremost, you need to install the Raspbian software to run the Pi. You can find and download the software on this link. Follow the instructions as prompted and it should be pretty straightforward. 

After its successful installation, install Win 32 Disk Imager or a similar software to format the SD card and transfer the .img file downloaded to the SD Card. Then proceed with formatting the SD Card and installation of the software. Insert the SD card in the Pi and connect the Pi to your TV/Monitor via HDMI cable. Lastly, connect the Pi to a wall socket through a charging adapter and the mouse, keyboard through the USB ports on the Pi.

Once the Pi is powered up, it should boot up on its own and if you see a series of commands like pop up, don’t worry! It’s all part of the booting process and shouldn’t take too long.

Configuration of miscellaneous settings:

Start by connecting the Wi-Fi adapter to the Pi through USB ports and click on the blue Wi-Fi logo on the top right corner of the screen (similar to MacOS) and connect to your home network.

Then, set up the sound card by firstly launching LXTerminal on Raspbian. This can be easily found on the top left corner represented by a desktop logo. On LXTerminal, type the following command: aplay -l

If the Raspbian names your USB Sound card upon typing the command above, it means the sound card has been recognized successfully and we can proceed to configure other audio settings. So, as you can see in the picture below, my sound card (‘Sound Blaster Play! 2′) was successfully recognized by the Pi.

After this, type Alsamixer to change the audio output. Press F6 on your keyboard and switch the audio output from ‘DEFAULT’ to your Sound Card.

You are almost there. Read on to the final steps:

Its time to test the audio. To do so, hit Esc to exit the Alsamixer mode and return back to the LXTerminal. Then type speaker-test and your speakers should play a tone right away.

And that’s it! You can head over to Rasberry Pi’s browser application and play music which will we played through the speakers. If you wish to stream music using online streaming services, such as Spotify, google play music, sound cloud, etc., you may download Pi MusicBox v0.6 which will automatically detect sound cards connected and stream music.
