hi! i'm really loving icarus, you're a wonderful writer! but i just had a quick question. i love the flock graphics, and they're super helpful! would it be possible for you to maybe list the species of birds for the main 'characters' of the story as well? you don't have to post example photos or anything crazy, but i think just a list like that would be helpful too. sometimes i forget who has what kind of wings, and i think having a list so i can google image the bird would be great.

A/n: Here's part 2. I hope you enjoy it. I'm not too sure if I'm going to continue this.

"GOD! Why are you upset with me?"

"We'll maybe you drooling over Nancy, who! If you forgot. Broke your heart into a million pieces." you hissed.

"You can't be serious."

"The hell I am serious you jackass."

"Stop calling me a jackass."

"What's wrong, jackass."

"Y/n stop it."

"Jackass!"

"Y/N!" 

"JACK. ASS."

"THAT'S IT! Either you two go somewhere and have sex, coz the sexual tension is so freaking intoxicating in here. Or shut up and help us with the Vecna's curse."

You both fell silent at Dustin's shouts.

"Thank you."

"I would have never hurt you like Nancy." You whisper. Eyes trailed across the room to nowhere.

Looking down at you, Steve was surprised. Your eyes were strained to the floor. You looked hurt. Mentally scolding himself, Steve brought a hand under your chin.

"What did you say."

"Nothing."

"Y/n. Baby."

"Go suck Nancy's dick Jackass." You hiss, pulling his hand away and strutting over to Robin.

"Now here's the plan, we're..."

Dustin's words drowned out as Robin sighed. She knew the kid had a big ego, but never like this. Maybe it was his tone. Slumping your shoulders you sighed loudly. Catching the girl's attention, purposely.

Rolling her eyes at the baseball cap-wearing kid. Robin nudged you. "Does this kid ever shut up?"

"You think he's bad now? Trying babysitting him when he was six till this day I still don't know how he managed to explain the whole production of how babies were made to me... I was eleven at the time."

"HE WAS SIX!?" she shouted.

"ROBIN." Dustin hissed.

~1980~

You had been staring at the question for the past twenty minutes.

'What is the purpose of a period?'

Eyebrows scrunched together, pencil tapping against your bottom lip.

"How the hell should I know." You mumbled.

You were supposed to be babysitting your neighbour's annoying kid. What was his name, David? No, Daniel, Nah... Dustin? yeah, Dustin.

That reminded you. Where the hell was he.

The sound of what you assumed was legos, being smashed to the ground filled your ears.

"HOLY SHIT!"

Getting up from your seat you made your way down the hallway and to the right.

"Dustin. What the hell?"

Pulling open the door, you saw the baseball cap-wearing kid on the floor surrounded by, well you had no idea what it was, but it was not legos. More something illegal, all it had was wires sticking out of it.

"Is that a radio?" You asked, confused.

The kid sat in pure silence, the only noise being the ticking of the clock in the dining room. You both locked eyes.

"...No..?"

Of course, you, of all the preteen kids in the street, had to be babysitting Dustin Henderson.

"Okay...? Then what are you doing?" You pressed.

Shooting up from his spot, he kicked the thing under his bed. "Nothing."

"Sure didn't sound like-"

"I said it was nothing." He stated, his little legs taking him to you.

"Come on let me help you with your homework." With that, he took off down the hall. Homework? Six-year-old, helping you with homework?

"YOU'RE SIX YEARS OLD! HOW THE HELL WOULD YOU KNOW ABOUT HOMEWORK?" you hollered after him.

And there he was, sitting in the seat you were in writing away.

"No, no." You stalked up to him, peering down. Holy shit.

"How?"

He turned his little head to you and smiled. Before pointing to the diagram in your textbook. Eyes wide you stared at him with disbelief.

After numerous accounts of you, sending him to watch tv and his protests. Dustin had explained to you the whole aspect of the vital concept of sexual intimacy.

"And that is how babies are made."

~Present Day~

You smiled at the thought. Little shit.

And ever since that day you and Dustin, formed a sibling-like relationship. Him bugging you every five minutes. Even attempted to teach you how to play DnD, which just ended with you staring at the kid, especially when you saw him wearing - this even more ridiculous - hat.

"... Eddie the police have you as a potential suspect."

Perking up at this. Your eyes darted straight at 'Rocky' who was sitting down. An idea formulating in your head. Steve saw the clogs in your head-turning the minute your eyes grew wide and head snapped up.

He knew that look all too well.

You did this before you would either snap a snarky or sarcastic remark at someone. He remembered that week, it was the week Billy first moved to Hawkins.

~1985, Senior Year~

You had been seated in the bleachers, 'watching', Steve at practice. Trying to scratch the stain off your white converses had been way more interesting than watching a bunch of 'low self-esteem cocky, dickhea- sorry 'Hawkins' high basketball team practice for this year's tryouts.

Since you forgot to bring your walkman to school today. It was either that or do your homework, which you and your teachers knew was not going to happen. So the yellow stain on your shoe, it was.

Cheers had erupted from the team, someone must have scored. Peering up you saw Steve lying flat on the floor and this mullet-wearing asshole flaunting his shit. Though you were too caught up on how sexy Steve looked, you could just take him -.

"Hey sexy, never seen you before."

Snapping out of your horny trance, you were met with sky blue eyes. Cute, you thought. Looking him up and down, you smirked.

Billy for once in his life looked gobsmacked. He usually was able to make girls blush, not... disinterested. That, however, didn't mean he was going to give up easily.

Chuckling, he took a hold of your hand. Caressing it, before yanking you forward. This guy needed a mint and a shower.

"My eyes are up here sweetheart, not at your fingernails."

Steve watched the interaction between you and Billy. This was not going to end well.

"Oh, I know. It's just that, I don't want to have to look at something that's cliché... or was it provocative, like you."

Billy's eyes widened.

"Hey Billy, come on man. You don't want to waste your time with her." Tommy called.

"Oh, believe me. I wouldn't mind a taste of this one." You watched as his eyes grew with lust, as he did so. Lord, here we go.

"Go on, Billy. Your boyfriend's calling." Snapping his head to you, what was once lust now was replaced with fire.

Sensing something was going to happen, Steve made stealthy movements toward you two.

"Hey, Billy? Man? What's up?"

Steve saw the clogs in your head turn.

"Nothing, man. Just this little bitch." Billy called, beginning to grow frustrated, with you.

And that's when it happened.

"Is that what you call Tommy, huh? Little bitch...? Kinky."

Your attempt to anger the guy was one big failure. You instead intrigued him.

Billy leaned in, stopping right next to your ear. His hot breath touched your cheek. This bitch was panting, heavily. He definitely needed a shower.

"You're such a little tease, L/n." He whispered, pushing off the bench and walking past all the boys.

~Present~

And there it sat. That menacing smirk, the smirk that got any guy on their knees.

"A convicted killer? And here I thought you were the leader of a Satanist group...? Kinky." You stated.

Satanist, Eddie thought.

Everyone's attention was now on you, Lil ol' you.

"Y/n!" Dustin hissed loudly. "Do we need to get you desexed!?"

Steve knew what you were doing, he knew all too well. Yet choose to not fall into your games... At least he thought he wouldn't.

"Dustin, just...just continue."Steve fumbled out clearly annoyed with you.

Peering his gaze away from you, the young boy continued.

"Anyway! In order to prevent anyone from experiencing a trance by Vecna. I'm going to ask that we pair up... wait...one...two...seven... okay maybe one will be a group of three."

"I'm going with Rocky." You stated bluntly. Staring Steve dead in the eyes. Walking over to Eddie, you reached your hand out.

He looked at it, then behind you.

"Would you just take my hand, it's not poisoned."

Hesitantly Eddie grasped your hand. Soft, he thought.

"Woah! Woah. What? No! Y/n, you're coming with me. Whether you like it or not."

"The hell I am. Fuck off. Besides, I want to make a new friend... is that so bad?" Without any protests. Or more like Steve yelling at you to get back here. You and Eddie left.

Sighing Steve kicked the closest thing near him.

"Damn, bitch."

"Well, buddy it looks like you're stuck with me."

"What?" Steve hissed. "Wait, where did Robin go?"

Looking off to the other side of the room, Dustin, laughed nervously. "Well... whilst you and Y/n were bickering she left with Max and Lucas."

This information left Steve fuming.

"JESUS...! No, not again, I'm not being the babysitter again... there is no fucking way. Fuck this where did that bitch... making me jealous."

"Oh my God. Would you stop sulking and c'mon... baby."

"Hey! I'm not a baby." Steve snapped, walking out of the boathouse.

Rolling his eyes the younger boy followed. "Yeah... 'course not."

Meanwhile, there was silence between you and Eddie.

You flickered your flashlight up the tree and sighed.

"You know I could be at home right now...in my PJs... watching; Halloween, Beverly Hills cop...Streets of Fire... Rocky...But no."

Eddie stayed silent. You two had been walking in complete silence since you stormed out of the boathouse. You seemed really upset, at Steve that was. So he decided to take matters into his own hands.

"What's your favourite song?"

"What?"

"I said, what's your favourite song?" Eddie simply stated gesturing to your walk-man.

Gently touching it, you glanced up. No one not even Steve noticed that you had your walkman on you.

"How'd you -"

"My eyes see a lot of things, Y/n."

Chuckling you shook your head. "You know saying that, makes you sound more like a serial killer."

"Oh does it now?" He cocked his head. His fuzzy hair swiped across his shoulders. Cute.

"Well is Lil miss feisty going to answer my question, or do I have to find out myself?"

Taking subtle steps, he inched closer to you.

"Okay, okay... Hang on...you're gonna laugh at me. Okay?"

Gasping Eddie placed a hand on his chest. "ME? Never."

Taking your walkman out and pulling the headphones off you pressed the play button. The once silent woods were now filled with the rock hit.

"Tears for Fears, huh?"

As quick as the music came it went.

"See I told you."

"Hey, hey. I reckon it's cool... well I mean considering they're no Kiss."

"Yeah, I guess."

You hadn't noticed Eddie close the gap between the both of you, pressing play your music began playing again.

"Don't take my heart, don't break my heart. " He began singing.

He was close, very close. Lips about to touch close. No, you couldn't do this, what about Steve. Before you could do anything, Eddie step back, embracing the song. Wiggling his eyebrows at you, he swayed to the pop music. You giggled watching the punk rock teen dance around you like a manic. At this moment it made you miss Steve. Considering this was your song.

~Snow Ball 1984~

You both had promised Dustin, that you would be his emotional support for the winter dance. He had been going on about this girl, this popular girl, he wanted to ask to go with him. You had been sitting in the back watching all the kids get out of their car all nervous and dressed up. Bored, that was when a particular blue Camaro pulled up and a little redhead came out.

"I'll be back." You called opening Steve's door.

Slamming the door shut Max stuck her finger up at - who you knew damn right was- Billy in the car. Almost missing you.

"Max! Hey Max." Spinning around ready to shout, she caught your figure.

"Y/n. Hey." She smiled.

"Billy giving you a hard time...? You say it and his ass is grass."

The redhead looked up to you, she wasn't too sure what it was, maybe because you were different. And didn't drool over her brother, instead gave him a real hard time. Or maybe it was because you weren't self-efficient as all the other teen girls. Yeah, you wore makeup but it was only mascara and red-tinted lip balm. Not like the other girls. Or maybe it was how you could protect yourself.

"Nah, he's fine."

"Okay, well you have my number. Anytime you need I'll be there."

You sent a wink her way.

"Thanks, Y/n."

"No problem, foxy. Now show 'em what ya got it."

Max rolled her eyes at the nickname, 'foxy'.

Getting back to the car, you notice the empty seat, Dustin must have left. Opening the door you missed the look Steve gave.

"Where'd you disappear to?"

"Oh ya know, fairy godmother duty calls. As it does to you." You stated, earning a scoff from the boy next to you.

"I am no 'fairy godmother'."

You turned to him with a raised brow. "Sure, sweetcheeks, whatever you say. Keep your masculinity intact."

Without another word you two were off, Steve hadn't said anything but turned up the radio. The soft music drowned out the car's engine. Eyes fixated on the glistening trees passing by. They looked so beautiful under the moonlight. Steve had looked over at you. He wasn't sure exactly when he fell, but he knew it was strong, stronger than what it had been for Nancy. He wanted to tell you but wasn't sure when. He knew he had too, it was killing him inside. Turning out off the road and through a dirt one. He had continued down it, noticing from the side of his eye, that you moved to face him.

"Where are we going? You're not going to kill me, are you...? Coz if you are, I just want to you know..."

"I'm not going to kill you L/n, so calm down, okay...? Just trust me."

Keeping a wary eye on him, you nodded your head. About five minutes later, Steve parked the car, near a cliff. The view took your breath away, literally. One because you had a fear of heights. And two, because the view was absolutely stunning. You could see every single glow of the houses in Hawkins.

"Oh wow."

Yet, Steve's eyes were trained on an even more beautiful sight, in front of him. You.

"You like it?"

Looking back at him, you were surprised by his question.

"Like it? Steve I... I love it." A smile spreads across your lips.

"Wait. let me grab something." Quickly making his way to the boot of his car, Steve pulled out his mobile stereo. Watching him you raised a brow.

"Steve, what are you -" The song silence you.

Tears for Fears was one of your favourite bands. How did he know?

"Dustin...uh... he told me they're your favourite band."

But traditions I can trace against the child in your face

Your smile only grew and he loved that.

Grasping the boy's hand, you gave a giggle but was silenced when Steve pulled you in close. Looking up with were met with kind brown eyes. Brown eyes that held so much adoration toward you. Humming along you rested your head on his chest and began swaying to the gentle music.

Chuckling at the vibration of his voice against your cheek.

You couldn't help but laugh at his horrid attempt to sing. Oblivious singing off-key on purpose, but at that moment you stared at him lovingly. Never had you ever felt this way. You knew right then and there, that Steve Harrington won over your heart. Meeting your eyes, Steve smiled. His heart fluttered at the sight of you.

I made a fire, and watching it burn

Thought of your future

Your hair, in its natural form, long and curly. Fluffy if that. Long lashes coated in the simplest bit of mascara and those rosie red-tinted lips. Those kissable lips. Leaning down, only inches from your lips, Steve paused. His minty breath fanning your hot plumped lips.

With one foot in the past, now just how long will it last?

Cassandra Cain Reading Guide Part 5: The Search for a Well-Written Character.

So you want to be brave and read more Cass? To read the journey in “full.” The bad along with the good. To know THE FULL STORY. But with it comes pain. Horribly badly written pain. Well-- I warned you.

Batman: City of Light #1-8

So you want to read the worst tale of Cass as Batgirl during her prime years not found in her ongoing (1999-2006)? This is the story for you! You have Cass drawn in an oversexualized manner when as Batgirl. You have covers where looking at the poses they put Cass thru make you question things.

You have a subplot with Cass that has her dating a namely boy but goes thru PTD due to the abuse David Cain inflicted upon her.

It's surprising (or maybe not for good reason) how many don't truly remember the existence of this mini-series at times.  Sadly, maybe it's best to not fully dig up this one unless you're truly brave in reading what lies within it.

Robin #148-151 aka Robin OYL. 

So you read all of Cassandra's Vol. 1 ongoing and wonder what was she up too after it ended? Well, here's your answer. I must warn you even with the gorgeous art you will find only anger and pain when reading these issues. 

More if you decide to randomly read #152 as well.  This arc begins Cassandra's "supervillain"/dragon lady phase. That lasted from 2006-2007. It will truly tick you off watching DC chuck Cass to some truly awful characterization. The problems here are all over the place. A newly minted comic book writer being thrown to the wolves of fans that some still haven’t forgiven him to this day (to which writer Adam Beechen has teased).

Supergirl #14

The issue probably has the best written evil Cass among all you'll find here. She's menacing, a threat, and-- obviously had just watched the Empire Strikes Back. Because she uses basically lightsabers to fight Kara.

So why is it here? Well, um.. the way Kara defeats Cass in this is-- a thing.  A thing you never knew Kryptonians could do until this issue. Also, the way it happens is kind hilariously in a-- why did Cass have to be in that position on Kara? Instead, you know keep her distance? Likewise the revelation that Bruce/Tim know where Cass is hiding out and do-- NOTHING.

    Teen Titans #42-47 (Titans East)

- Due to the backlash toward Robin OYL, DC answered with this story. Geoff Johns attempts to “fix” the evil Cass mess with her own "fearbug retcon" aka Slade drugged her up with his supersoldier serum. That’s why she’s evil and acting like a stereotype. 

The problem is, yeah besides the panel above the story is a mess. The creative team (Johns and artist Tony Daniels) book it by #44 leaving an entirely new creative team to finish this story (poor Adam Beechen’s first rehab of the character)-- and it shows.

By stories’ end you’ll be pulling  your hair at what was the entire point of this story?

World War III #2, 4

-  This 52 event comic fills the gaps created in "Titans East" by further retconning OYL (this time Batman: Face to Face), saying it was actually Cass who was defending Gotham (with Alfred's assistance) not Harvey Dent only did some things (but took the glory). While Slade plays devil on Cassandra's shoulder.

The next issue shows Cass for a few panels before we see Slade sniping Cass and incapacitating her. Given what we know “Titans East” we know what will follow: him drugging her and-- causing the whole evil phase to begin. 

Yeah. -_-

Robin #160-162 (Cassandra shows up in #161-162)

-  The arc concludes her supervillain phase by also setting up the final arc for the Robin writer Adam Beechen at that time (she funds the young meta Dodge to steal a steroid that her “employer” wants (we later find out to be both Deathstroke and David Cain).. 

In the final part to the story, she kills the corrupt CEO who originally created the drug (and tested it on a Gotham Street Gang) in front of Tim after he fails to bring crook to justice. 

Given the proximity of release. Many readers at the time thought this story took place prior to “Titans East”. In actuality, it takes place after. The act of killing the CEO snaps Cass back. 

Black Canary #1 (2007)

- Remember in Part III when talking about B&O, Green Arrow’s beef with Cass? This is that comic. Cassandra only appears in this panel above as it is clearly stated she has abandoned her faction of the League of Assassins and being EVIL. The villains of this series are some of her League remnants targeting Sin the child Dinah adopted to be the next “One Who is All”.

To make sure Sin never has such a target ever on her back. Dinah gives her a new life away. There is the journey that will lead you into Batman & the Outsiders. 

There are BAD stories that involve Cass (Batman #81, Future State: Gotham #15-18, Batgirls #7-8). But I dare you to only search for them if you will is truly strong. But I suggest to simply ignore them. You’re better off mentally. However there is ONE painful tale I do wish to add to this list:

Detective Comics #1029-1032

- If your a fan of the Bat-Family and not Bruce/Damian this story is absolute garbage. After a LONG career of writing Batman or Bat-Family books (namely Nightwing and Robin) writer Pete Tomasi churns out an awful tale. 

This is the ONLY tale, Tomasi ever wrote Cass in (and she jobs throughout it). The writing is just NOT GOOD as Cass acts OOC thru the whole arc. Ironically, this arc rehabs Damian from prior heelish turn in Teen Titans (oh irony).

The only other reason to even read this story? Artist Bilquis Evely. Her art is exceptional and she draws an amazing Cass in just two issues (#1030-1031). But that’s just it. If you’re a fan of Cass (or anyone above) you’ll just grit your teeth at the boneheaded moves they all do in this arc just so Bruce/Damian look good. 

Future State Gotham #15-18

- You’d think a “Battle for the Cowl II” (Jace Fox, Jason Todd, Hush, Damian Wayne, Dick Grayson, and Bruce Wayne) would make for a “good” story. No. No it is not. 

Whatever “good will” this series had ends on the most batshit insane story that’ll be forgotten by most save those who read it. Dick is fully a villain in this arc (even if he’s painted a tragic hero) who abuses a drug (so he can see the future), and beats up who’re trying to pull him out of this rut. 

Damian is possessed by a demon (Joe Chill, I’m not kidding) and because of it Hush (posing as Bruce) tries to use him to kill Bruce, Jace, and Jason by tricking the son of Batman into thinking they’re the Batmen from the Grant Morrison run that “doomed” Gotham.  

Cass’s only reason in this story is to job. Somehow her, Duke (at the height of his powers in this universe), an older Harper Row (introduced in this arc to job), Babs, Stephanie, Tim, and Kate Kane all are defeated because Dick knows everything. 

Again, the story is just--- a thing to behold. The ending is crazy. Dick getting a redemption feels like complete ass (after all he did in the prior issues). Just when you’re thinking maybe we’ll get a Bat-Family assist when Hush unleashes an army of Talons (he leads the Court of Owls) on Damian, Dick, Jace, Talia, Babs, Bruce, and two others. Nope Dick sacrifices himself to “save” the day. 

Ugh.

-  One of the worst Batman events in decades, Gotham War you have to read to believe in how awful the writing is within it. The main characters' motivations are sketchy if best. No character comes away clean or of sound mind in the story.

The only redeeming qualities of the event are the art and the Gotham War Red Hood #1-2 mini-series that tie into the event. 

Other than that? 

AVOID THIS COMIC unless you wish to wrack your brain with PAIN.

Cass within the event is no different.  The character is given 0 motivation or agency within the event. She's basically a cardboard standee for Bruce to showcase his increasing mental issues (pertaining to that Batman run).

Sophie’s Exhaustive Dark Academia List

For a while now, since my dark academia rec list was such an unexpected success, I’ve wanted to create a list of all the dark academia books I’m personally aware of, regardless of whether I have already read them, as sort of a resource for the community. I have now done just that!

The titles in bold are the ones I have read. The ones I would especially recommend (which, okay, yeah, are almost all of the ones I’ve read) are in bold and italics. Note that this doesn’t mean I loved absolutely everything about the recommended book, just that I think it was good or worth reading overall.

Also, just to be clear: My personal definition of dark academia would be a story that is set at a school or university or focuses heavily on academia otherwise (maybe the characters are in a secret book or debate club, discuss academic topics, something like that) and in which something bad or dark happens. This could be a crime (violent or non-violent), an accidental death, something supernatural going on... Note: Some of the books on the list (meaning of those I haven’t read) might only fit a looser definition of dark academia, e.g. maybe they have a dark subject matter and include some intellectual elements, even if the setting isn’t actually an academic institution.

Wait, so this has to be after Heart of Darkness.

The terrified look on that woman’s face when Regina strokes her chin, looks at her longingly and tells her she loves her. Omg Regina was in love with this woman all along! It was never about Daniel. It was about Christina! I’m naming her Christina. 

They are my otp now.

How did Tinker Bell get out of neverland? Pan decides when people leave, and I doubt he’d let her leave just to pay a visit with the Evil Queen. But then and again maybe it was all part of his big plan.

Oh. Pixie dust doesn’t dictate who your true love is. It just shows you possibilities. That’s not what you said before, Tinker Bell!

Regina, we all know you spared her because she’s your ex-girlfriend.

Actually, this visit from Tinker Bell is odd because she doesn’t seem angry at all like when she, like, wanted to kill Regina in 3x03. How did she go from, “okay. I lost my wings because of you but it’s all cool. I just want my otp together.” to “I’m gonna f***ing drug you with pixie dust and rip your heart out!”?

Also, this is the Evil Queen I like to see. So cold, terrifying and breaking on the inside. I’m not a fan of the humorous one in 6x02. I wish Split Queen was more like this as well. Ah different writers and director. Interesting.

Split Queen: “…not some burlap-loving peasant who sleeps on dirt.” Wish Robin: “Excuse me, I sleep on hay.” Important distinction!

I love Emma just casually talking to Zelena like they’re gal pals at a sleepover. More of this please! 

I can see what sqers say about this scene. Regina really does look hurt by the notion of Emma getting married. There is no heterosexual reason for her to react like this unless she’s in love with Hook. I think this is the only time they hug. Man, I feel so bad for sqers because upon this rewatch I can really see where they are coming from with that interpretation. It’s definitely there. And then they hug because Emma’s getting married to someone else. I would be so upset if that was my otp. What am I talking about, I watched 10 seasons of Smallville as a hardcore Chloe x Clark shipper. I think this exact scenario played out and it freaking hurts! 

In other news, I am so in love with Snow. Have I mentioned that? I feel like I haven’t mentioned it in a while and it needs to be said. 

I’m also in love with David, in case you forgot. I want to join their marriage. Can I join their marriage? I’m joining their marriage. Emma, I’m your mummy now. Don’t think about the age difference too much.

I really appreciate this change because I nearly lost it with Regina when that was her attitude.

Oh snap! Emma found Hook looking at himself killing her grandfather??! I completely forgot about this!

Why does she say, “That’s David’s father”? Why doesn’t she say, “That’s my grandfather,” or “That’s my dad’s dad”? She hasn’t called her dad ‘David’ in years. It’s like she’s trying to separate herself from the victim as much as possible.

She’s not even a little bit upset he killed her dad’s dad? That that event caused her father so much pain? She’s just infuriated that he tried to burn his memory. I mean, yes, she should be angry about that but where’s the empathy for her dad at least? I didn’t know any of my grandfathers well but if I found out I was engaged to someone who did that I would be angry for my grandparent, angry for my parent and angry for myself. I’m just speechless that that’s all she cares about. It seems so out of character. But then and again Regina had her other grandad killed. 

And now he’s gonna leave because he rightfully got told off. Can’t say I’d offer the same thing but she said, “until you’re ready” not “you’ll never be ready”, dude. 

I think he’s just scared David will punch him in the face at this point. It’s the only explanation for doing the exact opposite thing Emma asked of him.

“Captain Hook is always welcome on the Nautilus.” More like welcome on the naughty list after that stunt.

She doesn’t want a man, Henry Sr. She just confessed her deep, passionate, sexual love for Christina like 20 minutes ago, remember? Sometimes I wonder why I bother. It’s not even subtext, dude. Get it together, man.

Why don’t they fight themselves with magic?

Her dad is so heartbroken the person Regina hates most is herself. 

That is really sad that the person she hates most his herself. I can relate.

My conversations with myself be like-

Oh boy. This is too reminiscent of conversations with myself. Yes, I sword fight myself wearing a fancy black, cleavage-revealing dress in my head all the time. Only joking, I wear trilby hats. 

Oh okay. Now they’re tying each other up. I see what this is really about. I still haven’t bleached the “we do like it rough, don’t we Regina?” line from my mind. 

I suppose she did take back some of her own darkness. But I was hoping she would just merge herself back together. That would have been a really predictable outcome, but I just would have preferred it. 

This scene is so weird lol, but it helped me tremendously. I used to hate myself so, so much. You don’t even understand. It was like a violent hatred for myself for not fitting in and for every single little mistake I’d ever made. Then with a lot of self- healing and the help of this episode I began my journey into loving myself. I wrote on a sticky note “Love yourself. If the Evil Queen can do it, so can you.” and stuck it to my wall. Nothing I’ve done is comparable to what the Evil Queen has done and if she can learn to love herself, why can’t everyone else. Anyone who’s struggling with self-hatred, please take this episode to heart. You are worthy of love, most importantly from yourself. Any time you find yourself hating yourself just try to remember this scene and that the flipping Evil Queen of all people recognised the importance of self-love and didn’t give a damn what anyone else thought. She damn well gave herself a chance. I’ve heard a good technique is looking in the mirror and telling yourself what you love about you. Even if you’re not feeling it at first, you could get into the habit of it and your brain will start to accept those words as true. Because they are true.

Aww she sees the Charmings as her family. 

Regina: “it did give me hope when I needed it most, and that is just as important.” Oh my God, preach the word Regina! Regina is preaching with fire today! 

It’s like she’s having a therapy session with herself. I need to do that. I really do. Then I need to get actual therapy lol xD. But baby steps! 

Okay. A loophole as to how he can change Split Queen’s story. You know what, at this point I’ve learnt just to go with it.

Can Snow and Zelena be best friends? Please. It’s literally all I want in life. And to join Snowing’s marriage. I’m not asking for much. I’ll talk about it in self-therapy.

I want to look at myself with the love and adoration Regina looks at herself with. We should all get to that point where we look like we’re about to intensely make out with ourselves when we look in the mirror. 

I know what they were doing with page 23. I just wish Split Queen had changed her outfit so it could have been exactly like the page illustration. But I don’t think it was meant to predict the future. It was just one of Isaac’s fanfictions, wasn’t it? Hmm. I think it was a mystery to him as well if I can remember correctly.

It’s nice that oq shippers got their ship in the end in one form.

Snow is just constantly high up to her eyeballs on hope, bless her.

General Opinion over said character: i truly believe that the writers killed him off to pave the way for emma and hook. i think as long as neal was around, emma’s character wouldn’t of fully given herself to hook and the writers knew that so they took him out of the equation entirely. i think it would’ve been so cute for neal to be there w emma and support her for moving on and all that. i truly believe neal was emma’s true love (swanqueen feels aside lmao) but they didn’t need to kill him off to prove that he wasn’t. i could be totally wrong and the actor had other engagements but it’s just my opinion hahaha

‘Tis the season to beat the heat at the always-cold theatres and next to fans set at turbo speed. While my movie watching slowed a bit with the launch of the Summer Olympics on July 23rd, I’ve still got plenty of popcorn-ready and artsy recommendations for you. A few themes in the new-to-me pop culture I’m recommending this month:

Casts oozing with embarrassing levels of talent (sometimes overqualified for the movies they’re in)

Pop culture that is responding or reinterpreting past pop culture

July Crowd-Pleasers

1. Double Feature – ‘90s Rom-Coms feat. Lots of Lies: Mystery Date (1991) + The Pallbearer (1996)

In Mystery Date (Crowd: 7.5/10 // Critic: 6/10), Ethan Hawke and Teri Polo get set up on a blind date that gets so bizarre and crime-y I’m not sure how this didn’t come out in the ‘80s. In The Pallbearer (Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 7/10), David Schwimmer and Gwyneth Paltrow try to combine The Graduate with Four Weddings and a Funeral in a story about lost twentysomethings. If you don’t like rom-coms in which circumstances depend on lots of lies and misunderstandings, these won’t be your jam, but if you’re like me and don’t mind these somewhat-cliché devices, you’ll be hooked by likeable casts and plenty of rom and com.

2. The Tomorrow War (2021)

I thought of no fewer movies than this list while watching: Alien, Aliens, Angel Has Fallen, Cloverfield, Interstellar, Kong: Skull Island, Prometheus, A Quiet Place: Part II, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars: The Revenge of the Sith, The Silence of the Lambs, The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and World War Z. And you know what? I like all those movies! (Okay, maybe I just have a healthy respect/fear of The Silence of the Lambs.) The Tomorrow War may not be original, but it borrows some of the best tropes and beats from the sci-fi and action genres, so much so I wish I could’ve seen Chris Pratt and Co. fight those gross monsters on a big screen. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 6/10

3. Dream a Little Dream (1989)

My July pick for the Dumb Rom-Com I Nevertheless Enjoyed! I CANNOT explain the mechanics of this body switch comedy to you—nor can the back of the DVD case above—but, boy, what an ‘80s MOOD. I did not know I needed to see a choreographed dance routine starring Jason Robards and Corey Feldman, but I DID. All I know is some movies are made for me and that I’m now a card-carrying member of the Two Coreys fan club. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 6.5/10

4. Black Widow (2021)

The braids! The Pugh! Black Widow worked for me both as an exciting action adventure and as a respite from the Marvel adventures dependent on a long memory of the franchise. (Well, mostly—keep reading for a second MCU rec much more dependent on the gobs of previous releases.) Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 7.5/10

5. Liar Liar (1997)

Guys, Jim Carrey is hilarious. That’s it—that’s the review. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 7/10

6. Sob Rock by John Mayer (2021)

It’s very possible I’ve already listened to this record more than all other John Mayer records. It doesn’t surpass the capital-G Greatness of Continuum, but it’s a little bit of old school Mayer, a little bit ‘80s soft rock/pop, and I’ve had it on repeat most of the two weeks since it’s been out. Featuring the boppiest bop that ever bopped, at least one lyrical gem in every track, and an ad campaign focused on Walkmans, this record skirts the line between Crowd faves and Critic-worthy musicianship.

7. Double Feature – ‘00s Ben Affleck Political Thrillers: The Sum of All Fears (2002) + State of Play (2009)

In The Sum of All Fears (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7.5/10), Ben Affleck is Jack Ryan caught up in yet another international incident. In State of Play (Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 7/10), he’s a hotshot Congressman caught up in a scandal. Both are full of plot twists and unexpected turns, and in both, Affleck is accompanied by actors you’re always happy to see, like Jason Bateman, James Cromwell, Russell Crowe, Jeff Daniels, Viola Davis, Morgan Freeman, Philip Baker Hall, David Harbour, Rachel McAdams, Helen Mirren, Liev Schreiber, and Robin Wright—yes, I swear all of those people are in just those two movies.

8. Loki (2021-)

Unlike Black Widow, you can’t go into Loki with no MCU experience. The show finds clever ways to nudge us with reminders (and did better at it than Falcon and the Winter Soldier), but be forewarned that at some point, you’re just going to have to let go and accept wherever this timeline-hopper is taking you. An ever-charismatic cast keeps us grounded (Owen Wilson, Jonathan Majors, and an alligator almost steal the show from Tom Hiddleston in some eps), but while Falcon lasted an episode or two too long, Loki could’ve used a few more to flesh out its complicated plot and develop its characters. Thankfully, the jokes matter almost as much as the sci-fi, so you can still have fun even if you have no idea what’s going on.

9. Double Feature – Bruce Willis: Die Hard With a Vengeance (1995) + The Whole Nine Yards (2000)

Before Bruce Willis began starring in many random direct-to-DVD movies I only ever hear about in my Redbox emails, he was a Movie Star smirking his way up the box office charts. In the third Die Hard (Crowd: 10/10 // Critic: 7.5/10), he teams up with Samuel L. Jackson to decipher the riddles of a terrorist madman (Jeremy Irons), and it’s a thrill ride. In The Whole Nine Yards (Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 8/10), he’s hitman that screws up dentist Matthew Perry’s boring life in Canada, and—aside from one frustrating scene of let’s-objectify-women-style nudity—it’s hilarious.

10. This Is the End (2013)

On paper, this is not a movie for me. An irreverent stoner comedy about a bunch of bros partying it up before the end of the world? None of things are for Taylors. But with a little help of a TV edit to pare down the raunchy and crude bits, I laughed my way through and spent the next several days thinking through its exploration of what makes a good person. While little of the plot is accurate to Christian Gospel and theology, some of its big ideas are consistent enough with the themes of the book of Revelation I found myself thinking about it again in church this morning. (Would love to know if Seth Rogen ever expected that.) Plus, I love a good self-aware celebrity spoof—can’t tell you how many times I’ve just laughed remembering the line, “It’s me, Jonah Hill, from Moneyball”—and an homage to horror classics. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 7/10

Even director Questlove didn’t know about the Harlem Cultural Festival, but now he’s compiled the footage so we can all enjoy one of the coolest music fest lineups ever, including The 5th Dimension, B.B. King, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Nina Simone, Sly and the Family Stone, and Stevie Wonder, who made my friend’s baby dance more than once in the womb. See it on the big screen for top-notch audio. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 9/10

2. Good Morning, Vietnam (1987)

Robin Williams takes on the bureaucracy, disillusionment, and malaise of the Vietnam War with comedy. Williams was a one-of-a-kind talent, and here it’s on display at a level on par with Aladdin. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 9/10

3. Against the Rules Season 2 (2020-21)

Michael Lewis (author of Moneyball, adapted into a film starring Jonah Hill), is interested in how we talk about fairness. This season he looks at how coaches impact fairness in areas like college admissions, credit cards, and youth sports. 

4. Bugsy Malone (1976)

A gangster musical starring only children? It’s a little like someone just picked ideas out of a hat, but somehow it works. You can hear why in the Bugsy Malone episode Kyla and I released this month on SO IT’S A SHOW?, plus how this weird artifact of a film connects with Gilmore Girls.

5. The Queen (2006)

Before The Crown, Peter Morgan wrote The Queen, focusing on Queen Elizabeth II (Helen Mirren) in the days following the death of Princess Diana. It’s a complex and compassionate drama, both for the Queen and for Prime Minister Tony Blair (Michael Sheen, who has snuck up on me to become a favorite character actor). Maybe I’ve got a problem, but I’ll never tire of the analysis of this famous family. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9.5/10

6. The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (1972)

This month at ZekeFilm, we took a closer look at Revisionist Westerns we’ve missed. I fell hard for Roy Bean, and I think you will, too, if for no other reason than you might like a story starring Jacqueline Bisset, Ava Gardner, John Huston, Paul Newman, and Anthony Perkins. Oh, and a bear! Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 10/10

Got a 2020 Superman State of the Union assessment?

Not the most overtly monumental of years for big blue - a lot of the biggest news for Superman this year was about stuff we’ll see next year, which I’ll get into further below - but on the whole definitely a net positive!

Really, the only things I’d say counted ‘against’ this year were the back half of Rucka and Perkins’ Lois Lane and how badly that went off the rails - which for my money was more than counterbalanced by the conclusion to Fraction and Lieber’s Jimmy Olsen - and Romita Jr. turning in shoddy work on Action Comics. Otherwise? Bendis played out the consequences of Truth in fun ways and closed out his tenure on the main titles with a pair of artful final issues, we got Waid’s return to the character alongside Francis Manapul for a great short story, the last issue of the instantly iconic Superman Smashes The Klan, and several excellent installments in DC’s digital Man of Tomorrow series, while Commanders in Crisis introduced the Superman analogue to beat for the 2020s in Prizefighter. And in mass-media Routh’s Superman got a nice fly-by sendoff at the end of Crisis on Infinite Earths, there were two animated features in Red Son and Man of Tomorrow (the former of which I haven’t seen but the latter of which is probably the best official Superman movie, even if that says more about other Superman movies than anything else), and we naaaaarowly avoided the Superman logo being codified as fascist iconography for a generation. Oh and the comics industry did not in fact end due to Covid. So all-in-all a win.

So here’s what we do know officially for Superman in 2021:

* Superman & Lois will debut on the CW, the first Superman TV show (without substantial qualifiers) in 20+ years.

* Future State will feature Jon Kent taking on the mantle in Superman of Metropolis, Justice League, and Superman/Wonder Woman, while a now spacefaring Clark is in Worlds of War, Imperious Lex, Batman/Superman, and House of El. Meanwhile Kara graduates from Supergirl to Superwoman in her own two-parter as well as featuring in Superman of Metropolis, and Conner Kent appears to be acting as some kind of Superman in Suicide Squad.

* Phillip Kennedy Johnson takes over Action Comics and Superman in March, beginning with a two-part crossover The Golden Age illustrated by Phil Hester. After that Action Comics will be drawn by Daniel Sampere through around September, at which point Mikel Janin will be illustrating an event-scale arc for the book. Meanwhile Scott Godlewski will be the artist on Superman, but around the time of Janin’s arc on Action an entirely new, as yet unknown creative team will take over Superman while PKJ remains on Action. Both books will also have backup features spotlighting various Superman/Metropolis-adjacent characters as there’s little space for them in the cosmic direction the main story will be tilting towards for the time being.

* Superman: Red & Blue will debut in March as a counterpart to the various Batman: Black & White series over the years.

* Outside the main Superman books, Clark will star in Brian Bendis and David Marquez’s Justice League, as well as Gene Yang and Ivan Reis’s incredibly rad-looking dimension-hopping new take on Batman/Superman. Bendis is indicating we’ll be seeing the long-delayed Event Leviathan: Checkmate this year as well, which features Lois as one of the main characters.

* Not strictly Superman news, but apparently we’ll be seeing Netflix’s adaptation of Mark Millar and Frank Quitely’s Jupiter’s Legacy next year, which centers around the multi-generational drama of the family of Superman analogue Utopian.

* Zack Snyder’s Justice League, its hour come round at last, slouches towards HBO Max to be born.

As for predictions? Well for starters, pretty much everyone takes as a given that Mark Waid is putting together some long-form Superman project now that he’s working with DC again, and I expect to see something come of that next year; Tom King has also soft-announced he’s working on a Superman project since he’s done with scripting his three current DC minis, but I wouldn’t be surprised if nothing directly came of that until 2022. I’d also speculate that Scott Snyder has something in mind: he’s repeatedly said he’s planning on a major out-of-continuity project, and he’s made clear he’s done with Batman for the time being, I imagine he’s done whatever he wanted to for Wonder Woman with Death Metal, and anything he did with the JSA right now would be extremely in-continuity; I doubt he’s playing with anything less than the icons anytime soon and he definitely seems more engaged with Superman now than he was when he wrote Unchained (hell, the end of Last Knight on Earth can basically only be read as ‘I wanna write Superman now’). Again though, dunno that I’d put money on that being next year. 

Outside the theoretical prestige stuff, everything we’re hearing about Future State, Infinite Frontier, and PKJ’s barely-veiled discussion of his run seems to suggest Jon will end up sharing the Superman name in the present and probably taking over that book alongside the new creative team. If Batman: Urban Legends takes off then I wouldn’t be surprised if we got a Superman anthology given DC’s apparent current priorities of consolidating, testing a new publishing model, and putting the biggest names first. And maybe something will finally come of the back-and-forth over whether or not Cavill’s sticking around in the movies - if he is my first guess would be an appearance in DuVernay and King’s New Gods (which is still in progress per DuVernay as of this month) - but we can all I think be pretty sure he’s still not getting a video game anytime soon.

As for what we know for certain of Batman’s 2021:

* Future State has a whole slate of Batman-related books, but Tim Fox takes over the cape and cowl to fight the police state that’s taken over Gotham in John Ridley and Nick Derington/Laura Braga’s The Next Batman, while a resourceless Bruce on the run stars in Mariko Takaki and Dan Mora’s Dark Detective.

* James Tynion and Jorge Jimenez are solidified as the creative team on the now-monthly Batman, while Tamaki and Mora take Detective Comics, with a Damian backup by Joshua Williamson and Gleb Melnikov running through the first issues of each and apparently leading to something, probably a Robin book. Elsewhere Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo take over Nightwing, Chip Zdarsky and Eddy Barrows spearhead the new anthology title Batman: Urban Legends, and Tynion and Gullem March launch a Joker ongoing, while Bruce also stars in the aforementioned Justice League and Batman/Superman.

* The Gotham Knights game is scheduled to drop next year.

Aside from the Infinite Frontier cover suggesting Tim Fox will take on a role in the present before long as (a) Batman same as Jon Kent as Superman, hopefully with Ridley and Derington coming back, it doesn’t feel like there’s a ton of big Batman stuff to speculate on? Aside from the inevitable unannounced Black Label stuff - including probably Scott Snyder’s Nightwing book - we know the basic shape of things. The Batman is inching closer, Tynion/Jimenez are probably on Batman through at least the end of the year, Mora I don’t think stays on Detective because he’s committed to Once & Future but Tamaki presumably does, Taylor/Redondo Nightwing is immediately going to be a fandom favorite, and Gotham Knights is probably gonna suck because boy that doesn’t look very good. We know the broad strokes of where he’s headed for the time being across all media. If I had to take a whack at a big guess, I’d say I’m a touch skeptical about that HBO GCPD show or the Batmobile cartoon reaching fruition, the former because that’s an incredibly charged premise that has to act perfectly in sync with another mass-media project in another medium AND we know there’s already been behind-the-scenes drama, and the latter because that sounds incredibly stupid.

EDIT: Forgot, Bendis said in 2019 he was working on a Black Label Batman book, so wouldn’t be surprised to see that too this year.
