Complaining abt Suicide Squad yet again but the fact that they have Waller exposing the alien community to space racist attacks and talking abt how she got to her position through deceit and being a terrible person and stuff is just. Ahsfiwueh JUST SAY YOU DONT KNOW WALLER.

Anyways literally the 3rd mission of the Squad ever (and the first framed as smth Waller picked and not orders from above) was the Squad discrediting and stopping a rogue vigilante who was only arresting POC and funneling white people into white supremacy groups (of which he was the most prominent member) in SUICIDE SQUAD #4. and it's explicitly framed as this mission being personal for Waller that she's hiding from the government bc its illegal like. Guys. Please why are we having her incite (space bc comics) racist attacks now

Also the whole "Amanda got her position through deceit and being a terrible person" NO. she KEPT her position through being shitty and playing complicated political games!!! She wasn't always that way like there is a difference and it is IMPORTANT ppl PLEASEEEE. In Secret Origins #14 we learn Amanda's backstory and she used to be a normal, caring person! Like even after she entered into working in government and politics she wasn't automatically morally bankrupt like please people. She was originally given control of the Squad by Reagan (*sigh* 80s comics...) to distract and get rid of her because she was so successful at pushing progressive social policy in Congress. Acting like she's this static pillar of evil is such a waste of her character and so fucking uninteresting and disrespectful to her arc it drives me MAD.

Like I am NOT saying Waller is all sunshine and rainbows, she fucking SUCKS (said w love <3) but like there's a human being there. It's a progression, she has a character arc like please, DC, please!!! They've fucked up Waller so bad and made her so opaque and uninteresting she can't even be the protagonist of her own story for fucks sake!

Like I don't know how many times I have to scream it until DC hears me or remembers but WALLER IS THE MAIN CHARACTER OF SUICIDE SQUAD. ITS HER BOOK. yet right now she's a cutout to be used as the villain wherever the writers please. Even in her book we get none of her perspective really displayed, no exploration of her thoughts with any kind of understanding of the role she traditionally has played and was made to play in the story.

YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THE KINDEST, MOST LOVING PERSON THE BAT-FAMILY EVER KNEW. You were so gracious with your benevolence that each and every vigilante took it upon themselves to take care of you at all moments lest you fall into unsafe situations or the hands of people who would ruthlessly take advantage of you.

Eventually, they forgot the fact that you were the sibling of the notoriously violent DAYBREAK, a vigilante that could be easily called a villain or terrorist instead if it weren’t for his close affiliation and friendship with the old Teen Titans crew when he was younger. He helped once in a while, but only if it meant he had free rein to cause carnage.

“This is useless, they won’t fess up.” Jason grunted as he fumbled around with his weapons, all broken after the battle just moments prior. Aliens and their abilities always made him feel so small in the grand scheme of things, and especially when they completely obliterated his entire arsenal.

Tim groaned, his back ached from the amount of times he was flung away towards whatever wall or ally the enemy wanted him to go to. He was used to being man-handled and even enjoyed that once in a while, but not in that way. “Aren’t they one of your kind? Cant you like… I don’t know…”

Your brother huffed, a pout on his pretty features. Quite similar to yours. Yet, he doesn’t spare the rest a glance. His eyes were trained solely on a restraining spell he managed to conjure as a last ditch attempt to stop the fight before it got . . . irreversible. Usually he’d just disintegrate whatever or whoever even looked at him wrong but even this titan-like intruder was proving to be a pain in the ass. “I can’t believe you, doesn’t mean we’re the same kind or whatever that means that—“

“He’ll be lucky to be even considered as one of us, filthy —“ The massive form spoke. Its metal like body clanging as it struggled in the spell’s area of effect. A soldier from your home planet, not as well trained as your brother — but he was brimming with aetherial ardor. A sort of magic source your people used.

“Okay, that’s it.” [Brother’s Name] groaned, summoning the last piece of his strength to open up a terminal. “Hey mooncake, need ya to do something for me.”

“No, we aren’t letting [Y/N] anywhere near this one. They could get seriously hurt. We were barely even able to—“ Dick held him by the shoulder, only to get burned by your brother’s leaking ardorial energy.

“Relax. Besides I’m not in your team. I don’t have to follow orders from you.”

“Daybr—“ Rachel, her cape almost completely burnt and tattered opened her mouth to admonish him.

But the sound of your sweet voice (more like hoarse, and half awake) silenced them all, “What do you need help with this time?”

“[L/N] don’t listen, go back to sleep, beloved.” Damian moved in from behind, learning from Dick’s mistake and instead using his blade to warn [Brother’s Name].

But if anything, that made the man more excited to annoy the “demonspawn”.

“Oh, mooncake you can’t believe who I stumbled upon today! Smile for the camera why don’t you?”

[Brother’s Name] flipped the terminal to show your face.

“You’re . . . General [Y/—“

And then flipped it back, showing his injured body. “He hurt me real bad. Look.”

Your face does not move nor your voice waver,

“Come back to the base.”

“No.” Black Canary, Dinah, slammed her hands on the table. She couldn’t believe this. It was already bad that they allowed you to be involved in their line of work, now they were letting you come face to face with a being that almost wiped an entire team of experience fighters? What were they thinking?

“That . . . thing is dangerous. We cannot allow this to continue!” Arthur concurred. He saw the state of your brother. A civilian like you had no business with something so dangerous.

“Unfortunately I have to say no to your refusal as well.” You calmly responded, “This situation is under the jurisdiction of the Fleet. It is only right that Daybreak and I deal with it.”

“Father you can’t possibly allow them.” Damian gripped your shoulder as he pleaded with Bruce. He had known you the longest next to Tim. You were barely able to hold your own as a normal student. Not that he was looking down on you, but if you couldn’t even fight for yourself in conversation, how could he let you be around that monster?

Bruce closed his eyes in deep contemplation. He studied your kind comprehensively. He did so for every vigilante and villain alike (Contingencies were his specialty) From how your magic system worked, to how society and customs were like. A lot of his knowledge came from Clark, who had also done his fair share of investigative work into your background.

He of all people in this line of work knew how dangerous you and [Brother’s Name] can be. He had done his calculations based off of what Daybreak could do. But curiosity drove him further.

“Fine.”

“Father!”

“But the whole league will be watching you, alongside the Young Justice and Teen Titans.”

“Sheesh, overkill much?” Daybreak, now plain [Brother’s Name] in a bunch of casts, piped up.

You nodded, quite honestly just aching to get out from this stuffy room already. “That is fine.”

Before you left, you head swiveled to take one last look at your sibling, building up whatever emotions you needed to see the job through, “Get some rest, brother.”

“Are you kidding? I gotta watch this.” Your brother laughed in earnest, almost-too-wholesome-for-him manner. You managed to understand why as his eyes scanned the people in the room.

He wanted to see them react to your true nature.

Your form finally disappeared from his sight as his eyes finally settled on another image of you glued atop a folder. “What are those?” He pouts to gesture at the objects, too injured to move his limbs.

“Files on [Y/N] and the being.” Bruce answered, opening up the screens for the cameras to the interrogation room.

[Brother’s Name] knows you’d give him a sermon for using his powers while he was already banged up but he had no choice. His arms were too broken to open up the folder after all. “You guys work quick.” He commented as the papers levitated and flipped through itself.

His eyes scanned the typewritten document swiftly, smile growing by the moment, “Pffft — kind hearted soul? Who wrote this?”

“It was compiled by me, but our sources vary from vigilante to civilians.” Clark mumbled. As one of the only other aliens, and people who could feel aetherial arbor. He felt your presence, your anger leaking earlier. It was heavy, as if the world was suddenly placed upon his shoulders. Yet he felt no fear for his own safety, only yours.

The gigantic door before you slid open revealing the enemy the vigilantes struggled to subdue earlier.

The soldier stood upright, sensing your presence. The rumors were true it would seem. Many wouldn’t be able to spot it, a testament to whatever you did to conceal your prowess, but they immediately recognized the magnitude of your ardor practically oozing around you.

He was expecting your anger. He knew of your protective nature towards your brother.

“My apologies.” But you didn’t. Instead you began nursing their injuries, repairing their armor, and even initiating casual conversation. “It must have been a long journey. I can’t help but resent whoever sent you here.”

“Your Excellency! I came of my own volition.”

“Oh? But judging from your armor you must be one of the knights.”

“Yes, 512th Squadron of the Imperial Army.”

“Of course, my eldest brother’s . . . “ Your fought to keep your hands from clenching. A gentle smile on your features remained unshaken even by the sudden revelation.

“Y-yes, your Excellency. It took many jumps for me to get here on my own.”

“Alone? What did you wish to come here for?”

“I-I wished to meet you but those Earthlings wouldn’t let me.”

“Mm. And so you fought them. As is right for one of our kind.” You brought out a handkerchief and wiped down your hands after finishing the task at hand. Then you took a seat in front of them.

“You understand! Of course.”

“Actually I came here to bid you to return. The Emperor misses you dearly and wishes to see you.”

“Do you know why he does?”

“N-no?”

You looked down. Voice soft, relaxed shoulders, a solemn tone, and a tremble to add on top. “My brother. He wishes to have a child with me. To use my powers in the form of a future heir to the throne.”

“I am not quite ready to have a child yet.” Nor were you interested with being a babymaker for that tyrant. But that wasn’t an appropriate excuse in the grand scheme of things.

“I understand! Your Excellency is quite young and even then, you have saved countless of lives. You deserve only to do as wish and nothing less.” The soldier slammed the floor in front of it. “Besides, his Majesty had already taken so many concubines I’m sure an heir wouldn’t be needed anytime soon.”

You nodded. A moment or two of silence for your mind to recollect everything that has been said before you execute what you came here for in the first place. You closed your eyes and took a deep breath. “How incompetent must the new Imperial General be at the moment?”

“Pardon?”

“Information is the most valuable asset to any sort of battle. As a general I kept a tight leash on it. Lest it spilled and caused unnecessary ruckus.” My knights were drilled, put through fire and blood, wiped clean before they were thrown back into hell again. And most importantly they were taught to sew their mouth shut or die. You, you just spilled everything I needed to know the moment I showed that I cared.”

“Your Excellency, I —“

“I was only going to punish you for trespassing. A measly act of destroying your Aetherial Helix.” “But in all honesty, I might be doing that brother Emperor of mine a favor by going . . . further.”

“N-no, you wouldn’t, you’re—!” The soldier was about to defend you even in its dying moments. But as it truly recounted all that has been told about you from its peers and seniors, it realizes one truly fatal fact.

You were never known for benevolence.

“Please! I did this all for you! I only wanted you back as my General!”

“Let this be a lesson.”

“No, please ! I- I - I beg of you—“

You looked up to the ceiling, beyond it — the stars and the infinite darkness you once called your home.

“And so I’ll continue to wield your blade, until I cut the stars from sky. I will protect you even from the gods I serve.”

You chant. The blood on your hands once again becoming too visible and distracting.

“Thank you for your service, soldier.” You deeply bow your head to the disintegrating corpse beneath you. Allowing the fallen's drained life essence to cover your forehead. [Brother Name] smiles. To others it may seem to have been a sign of respect — but to your kind, you were simply absorbing the spoils of battle. Taking in the dead and disgraced's remaining imprint on this world.

“My deepest apologies for the mess and time it took. The matter has been dealt with.” You returned. The blood, having dripped down your face, had dried and turned dark.

“I hope this has not soured your view on me.”

“Not at all . . .” Tim was the first to speak at your return. His fingers unconsciously replaying the footage of your . . . execution. Millions of questions already shot across his head as he was eager to probe you on them one way or another.

If anything it only made their obsession with you worse.

“Let me be your sinner, brother. This oath I shall never forsake.”

been thinkin' long and hard on this but i have come to the conclusion that benitesco is for those who are fascinated by the dynamic of two characters who share the same background and can therefore understand each other on a fundamental level that others can't even touch, but ultimately grow up to be v diff ppl.

it's that thing of "i know exactly why you are the way you are because i walked that same path, but somewhere along the way you took another turn"

it's looking at him and seeing the man you could've become (happier, angrier, more fearful, more serene)

it's this crushing sense of loneliness and thinking "no one will understand how difficult it was to get where i am, how much work it took, how precarious this all is." (they're all so content, grazing sheep in a flock who've never not had grass to feed on) but then it's recognizing someone else who also shared this struggle, only for him to be so kind and content and generous, and wondering for a moment, "what went so wrong with me?"

and last but not least, it's about being catastrophically down bad for one another to the point that it was inevitable that they'd fuck

Hii, I saw your latest post and your art style is so pretty?? What?? I have a question though. How do you do the paint one? Or rendering in general. Like genuinely, I have a problem with rendering and I can't seem to quite understand it on my own. Do you just start with flat colors? Do you do lineart or colors right after the sketch? Is the "lineart" just added later? Painted over? Erased to give thinner and thicker lines?? I'm really curious!!

hi! im not the best painter tbh! though i do have a background in painting but ill try my best to explain

diff artists have different approaches to how they paint but generally yes, you would start out with big shapes first and then go into the details - work big picture first. like, if you squint and the drawing makes sense in terms of value and colour and shape, youre on the right path.

i can kinda show this with a warmup in-class speedpaint exercise we did a couple weeks ago where we were tasked with painting an eye in about 30 minutes (i was late and only had 20 lol)

luckily ive got the layers for this. i start of with a base layer, kind of like a underpaint layer since that's how i personally learned to paint traditionally. i did have a sketch before laying down this base layer under it but i ended up using it for final rendering details lol

after that i started laying down the big blocks of colour. i wasn't necessarily aiming for complete colour accuracy here, i just wanted to match the value. i chose a pink underlayer to influence my colour choices because the underlayer will peak through the blocks of colour i paint over it

and then (forgive me if this seems like "draw the rest of the owl" in terms of progression) but this is where i started going in with finer detail. i did the rest of the render on the sketch layer i had so you can see some of the lines from the sketch here

here's the layers completely seperate from each other

even for the flat colour version of my character, i had an underpaint layer! i used yellow and orange since i wanted her colours to be warm and used a semi-opaque brush to put her colours in rather than using a completely opaque brush

when i wanted to do the painted version, i put the lineart on multiply and reduced the opacity and brushed in some some quick shadows on seperate layer on hard light mode to give me a good base to start painting with

and then i did all the rendering and details on a new layer ontop of everything. i keep the lineart light so i can paint over it easily and also colour pick from it when i want a more distinct line to seperate certain shapes. i unfortunately dont know how to explain this part because a lot of this is intuitive to me and i'm still learning. but you gotta make use of different types of "edges" in painting, and you would generally have more contrast in the focal point of your painting than in other places to draw the eye to that point. i suggest researching the use of edges in painting if you really wanna learn more - because im a terrible teacher haha

there's other things you need to learn too, like bounce light, atmospheric perspective, ambient occlusion... and colour theory is always important! i could go on for a long time. there's a lot of pieces to the puzzle and it may seem overwhelming but there's tons of resources online and it will all become second nature to you as you keep practicing

So, I've watched x-men apocalypse (wow, I'm soo early to this party). It was nice, and look, there's my country (so of course I'm gonna have opinions). And well. I've been reading fanfics, and as i skim thru the tags i see Nina Gurzsky, and then again, and hm again, and who tf is Nin... Oh, NINA, as in Erik's daughter. Wait, Gurzsky?

What kind of surname is that? Because it's not Polish. (but we can fix that.)

I know in comics Magda is of Romani ancestry but i don't remember it being mentioned in the movie? So i guess she's polish-polish. And "Gurzsky" looks like she's 4th or 5th generation of emmigrants to america, has let everyone pronounce the name anyhow which led to diff spelling, and doesn't speak polish anymore.

(Really, who came up with that name, I'd like a word. What was your reasoning, your reasearch, the background you came up for Magda? Maybe it makes sense and is justified to be like that? Maybe I'm wrong, don't have all the info, misunderstood something? Then I'm really sorry.)

So i guess anglophones just skip this surname all together, but let's try to read it. It would be something like goo-zh-ski or goor-zz-ski. Both are bad and hard to pronounce. Why is the "z" there? Why complicate it unnecessarily? Let's drop it (some ppl would do it anyway, even if it being there was justified, it's called simplification and it happens when there's many hard consonats next to each other, or something, i'm half asleep). My brain did it intuitively upon reading this name. It shouldn't be there. There's no reason i could see. So it's Gursky now.

Ehh. How many times? "-ski" is traditional ending of a polish surname, and used to indicate nobility. "-sky" is traditional transliteration from cyrylic alphabet, it's for the russian surnames. (And the ending "-sky" came there from Poland.) (I'm very passionate about that, sorry not sorry. But don't get me started at another polish surname "-cki" bc americans always pronounce it wrong. That “c” is separate letter and not just “k”, and i don't think i can find corresponding sound in english language (so you might be forgiven) and i don't want to bombard you with IPA (never mind, next day me kinda wants, so, it’s like “ts”, or german “z”), especially that it's not main topic of that post. But really, you could put some effort. We know the language is very different from your own, with weird sounds, but please, try. We're gonna love you for that. For one word. Anything really. Well, you already know “kurwa”, so maybe one more. Sorry, i digress.) So, it's "-ski", but not really. This type of surname changes based on gender. "-ski" is masculine, and "-ska" is feminine. Yes, not always, there are women with “-ski” and men with “-ska”, but then it does not flex at all (same form for both genders). You just have to ask. But that's minority. So now it's Gurska.

And surnames don't have to follow general rules of orthography and flexion, they can have their own unique spelling and way of decletion, you need to ask the bearer of the name. But. They still usually do. So looking at that name? It begs to be the deriving from mountains: góry. So it should be Górska. Pronounced: goor-skah. Now it is a Polish name. A good one.

So. I'm gonna use this name for that little family. It's canon for me now. Magda Górska and Nina Górska, and Erik was going under Henryk Górski. (Kinda cute if you ask me.)

Behind the scenes: Canyon Creek, and finding ice in the desert

With the first day of spring a few days behind us, I want to take us back to winter and talk about a particular activity my dolls and I love to participate in together, when the dark, cold days of winter feel dreary and endless.

So I've been taking outdoor photos of my dolls since before my blog was born, but it's only been more recently that I unexpectedly discovered a secret place where my dolls can put on their ice skates and spend a few hours gliding across a frozen pond!

All of the following nine pictures were taken in more or less the same location, at the same geographical feature: Canyon Creek.

I call it Canyon Creek, but that's not its real name. I'm not publicly sharing the real name, because I want to keep this secret jewel hidden from the world. It's actually on national forest land, but doesn't seem to be well known. It's easy to access, with only about a half hour hike into the canyon. Yet I almost never see hikers in the area. It's one of the few places I know I can take my dolls to and spend all the time I want taking pictures, and nobody will bother me while I do it.

Discovering the creek was a happy accident. When I bought Caroline her ice skates from her collection, I was excited to take pictures of her re-enacting scenes from her books. So I first tried making my own skating pond. I got a plastic lid from a large plastic storage container, filled it with water, and left it outside overnight to freeze. That was functional, but not very realistic looking.

So I racked my brain, reaching deep into my memory of where I could find a body of water that was no more than two hours' drive away, easily accessible with a doll in my backpack, safe to walk on, scenic, and in a location cold enough to freeze in the winter. I've hiked all around the state, and have a pretty decent memory for trails I've explored. I had a vague memory of stumbling upon a frozen creek when I hiked through a beautiful secluded canyon in the winter of 2014. I was certain about the general area of where to find it, but couldn't remember exactly which trailhead it was. After a first failed attempt at finding it, I was successful the second time. And the creek was full of ice, just like it was in 2014!

Where I live, in the state of New Mexico, there aren't many natural bodies of water, and not all of the ones that do exist are publicly accessible, or shallow enough to freeze. And it's uncommon for temperatures to get cold enough to keep water frozen throughout the day. Canyon Creek, though, has the perfect conditions for ice. It is tucked into a canyon with very high walls that block direct sunlight during the days of winter, when the sun is at a lower angle, so it stays very cold even when the surrounding temperatures are well above freezing. And the water is extremely shallow, which means when it freezes, it freezes all the way down to the bottom. So it's safe to stand on. (If it did somehow break, at the very worst my lower legs would be cold and wet and unhappy, but I would be in no danger).

Despite the perfect location, that doesn't mean Canyon Creek always has ice in the winter. Sometimes we have very dry summers and autumns, and so there's not much water that accumulates in the creek. And the climate has changed so drastically in the ten years since I first found the creek. Winter weather is more unpredictable, and much more dry.

On two occasions in which I hiked to the creek, the first section of it was completely dry. And another couple of times, I've found it full but completely covered in a few inches of snow. That's how I discovered that if I just continued hiking farther into the canyon for another quarter to half mile, other sections of the creek would be full of ice, or not covered in snow. So my photos do show some variations in the background scenery. Looking at the above grid of photos, you can see how different the creek looks from section to section, especially the last row, featuring Léonie. Those three photos of her were taken in December 2022, February 2024, and January 2025, each at a different section of the creek.

At this point in the year (late March), the ice is gone. I'm glad I got my pictures done when I had the right conditions this past January and February. I like knowing by the end of this year the creek will be frozen again, waiting for me and my little friends, and who knows what shape it will take then? Maybe I'll have to hike even farther into the canyon, and discover a new, more beautiful part of the creek the girls and I have never seen.

Or maybe, sometime this summer, when I'm outside exploring, I'll stumble across another previously unknown body of water, and come winter we'll be skating and taking pictures at a brand new location!

Speaking of summer....... there is a place where ice stays frozen even on the hottest days, and that place's name is not something I have to keep a secret!

A few years ago, Saige went with me to visit Bandera Ice Cave, a naturally formed lava cave that contains perennial ice. It's located right on the Continental Divide, in western New Mexico, in one of the state's many volcanic fields.

The cave is located on private land but is open to visitors, although you absolutely may not walk on the ice. To get there you hike through the lava field for a half mile, then you walk down a very long wooden staircase, descending through the solidified lava. Standing on the viewing platform, where Saige is posed, is as close as you can get. It's much bigger than it looks here, and the cold air coming off the ice felt amazing on that hot day in July. Found this thing in my drafts from like two years ago and decided to finally finish it.

A while ago, I finished Michael Heinrich's introduction to the three volumes of Capital, and I finally have to get my thoughts about it out so I can stop repeating them in my head. Maybe someone else will find them interesting as well, and I will try to keep it understandable for people without background knowledge, but be warned that this is gonna be long.

Overall I quite liked it as an in-depth summary of one of the most influential works of leftist theory of all time, all 2k+ pages of the three volumes, its context in intellectual history, and its different interpretations throughout the Marxist tradition. It really is quite a feat to fit all that on 200 pages, and Heinrich's style is crystal clear throughout, while remaining committed to rigorous study of the original text. I would dearly recommend it if you're interested in history or if, like me, you just want to know what the hell all these Marxists are talking about.

The book begins with a super brief summary of the history of capitalism and the labour movement, then gives an overview of the reception of Marx' theory, over time coalescing into orthodox Marxism ("worldview Marxism") which Heinrich himself mostly rejects. These first two chapters are a quick and good read, have some entertainingly disparaging remarks for example about Lenin, and overall they accomplish the impossible: They make you excited to learn about Marx's actual theory which has been misconstrued and stripped of its subtleties by so many historical figures for their own ends.

It's a shame then that I did not find Marx's actual theory all that compelling:

The traditional labour theory of value, which was commonly accepted in Marx's time, is easy to explain (the difference in value between the raw materials and a product is produced by the workers, who receive some of this difference as wages, while the rest is profit for the capitalist) but just as easy to dismiss (How does the value of a product change so much over time when the workers always put in the same amount of labour? How does value sometimes not change at all when workers put less or more labour in? How does undeveloped land have value? ...), so Marx offers a more complicated account, as a sort of elaboration on the general idea of the labour theory:

Only the "abstract labour" produces value, parallel to the "concrete labour" producing the concrete product (its "use-value"). While concrete labor and use value are not fungible (the labor that produces one product can not produce another; and when I am in need of one product, a totally different one will not help me), abstract labour and value are fungible, and can thus be compared and ultimately expressed in the form of numbers. This abstract labor is only the "societally necessary" part of the concrete labor, basically what remains after several "abstractions", namely: average productivity; reductions for increased supply and for lowered demand; needed qualifications of the workers. Heinrich adds societal views as another abstraction, because for example, products which can be produced entirely by women or illegal immigrants tend to be worth quite a bit less.

What's the benefit of all this compared to just saying that value depends on a lot of things, and that one of the many deciding factors is the amount of labour required in the production process? The book does not say. Heinrich just asserts over and over that you can understand capitalism better (or at all) when you view it through this lens, without ever explaining why. Also even with all these complications, "abstract labour" still does not explain the value of undeveloped land. (Heinrich does finally explain the value of land much later in a footnote in chapter 10 while discussing the third volume of Capital. He does this unsurprisingly via the profit which can be expected from use of the land. This is reasonable, but it's a totally different kind of explanation, and the theory of abstract labour does not account for it at all.)

Granted, it's not like the marginalist theories which are popular among economists nowadays are any better. We all know why oil and gas suddenly got so expensive in 2022, and it has as little to do with the marginal utility of this oil and gas as it has with the labour required to extract them.

Reading Heinrich, I sometimes got the impression that Marx was just desperately trying to fit his other theories into the vocabulary of the labour theory of value because it was so broadly accepted back then, and because it's rhetorically useful for riling up the masses, but a naive labour theory was unsuited for his theories, so now we have this abomination of a compromise. Regarding riling up the masses, Heinrich does not repeat the typical orthodox Marxist slogans equating profit to value which is "stolen" from the workers, but when he says that workers only work part of the time producing the value which they receive as wages, and the rest of the time they are producing profit for the capitalists, that's pretty much the same statement with more words.

I do like how Heinrich hammers in the point that value is not some objective property of a product, it is a social relation expressed as a number. I just think he doesn't go far enough, partly because he refuses to entertain the idea that value is a result of the exchange itself. He says the exchange just reveals the value, and he then spends a lot of ink defending himself against accusations that he secretly wants to smuggle an exchange theory of value into a discussion of Marx. I think it could have been an interesting experiment to see how much of Marx would actually be compatible with an exchange theory. Take this (rather famous) Marx quote for example (MEW 23, page 88, my own translation).

People therefore don't relate their labour products to each other as values because to them these things are merely tangible hulls of undifferentiated human labour. The other way around. By equating during the exchange their different products to each other as values, they equate their different labours to each other as human labour. They don't know that, but they're doing it.

I get why some people get so obsessed with Marx. This stuff is electric, and clearly very far away from a naive labour theory of value. Add to this the idea that the equating Marx is talking about here is not just happening in people's heads but to his understanding is a real process within the social relations (a real abstraction if you have ever come across that formulation and wondered what that was), and everyone is thoroughly confused but intrigued. I don't care much for it though, it's very vague and a bit circular when you think about it in the context of value allegedly being produced by abstract labour. Also, equating different kinds of labour to each is obviously just what's happening on the labour market, not anywhere else. But it does seem to hint at an approach that centers exchange much more than Marxists let on.

Speaking of exchange, I was happily surprised by the discussion of money. Money is abstract value made concrete, but it is not an abtraction threatening the concrete. Abstraction is part of the whole process, money is just the inevitable expression of that abstraction. Heinrich goes so far as to call Marx' value theory a monetary theory of value, but I think that's a bit of wishful thinking. An actual monetary theory of value would be very interesting indeed, but Marx seems hobbled by his attempt to consolidate it with the labor theory of value. Today one would have to write that imagined monetary theory differently, not least because Marx' prediction that silver and gold will forever remain the quintessential money did not exactly come true.

So, these are like my main points about the big picture of Marx's theory. I have some others which go more into the nitty gritty, but they are also pretty fundamental so I'm afraid I won't be able to keep that short.

Firstly, value is not equal to price, nor is it mathematically derived from it somehow. This is insane. Heinrich makes a big deal out of emphasising that only for simplicity's sake he will assume in some of his examples and thought experiments that products are exchanged for their actual exchange value, but that in reality this is not so. He does not seem to think that this is a problem that might invalidate his examples. He even puts numbers on values, while also acknowledging that in realiy nobody knows what these numbers actually are. I admit I almost stopped reading after that. What is the point? Marx could say pretty much anything about value and it would be entirely unfalsifiable.

This also makes any causal statement about value dubious to say the least, because if nobody even knows the values of commodities, how can these values make anyone do anything? I can observe a commodity's price, the price has an obvious effect on my decision to buy it and on the capitalist's decision to have it produced in the first place. But according to Heinrich, basically the whole fabric of society is "mediated" by value. For that to be the case, value wouldn't just need to have any observable effect at all, but an effect that dwarfs the known effect of the price.

Somewhat relatedly, Marx and by extension Heinrich are very interested in the rate of exploitation. I find it a bit dishonest to use a word like exploitation and insist that you do not mean it as a moral judgement, just as a neutral description, but let's grant that for a second. The rate of exploitation is calculated as profit divided by wages, out of a misguided assumption that without someone extracting a profit, all the excess money would obviously go to the workers. He makes a big deal out of when this rate of exploitation rises and falls, but also says (correctly) that the individual capitalist does not care about it but only about the rate of profit, calculated as profit divided by all expenditures. He openly says that the rate of profit is what drives economic decisionmaking and then goes on as if this were a minor detail in the wider discussion of the rate of exploitation. But exploitation defined this way is not real. Workers are not more exploited when they work with more expensive materials and so their wages make up a smaller part of the overall expenditures. This is absurd.

The rate of profit will over time equalise across different companies and even across different industries and even sectors. Not completely, because you need to take into account that different industries have different risks, and also some industries are less open to newcomers, and investors just have historical preferences, and so on. But overall, if one industry has a much higher profit rate, it will attract more competition, until the profit rate is equalised again. As I understand it, value in Marx's theory is whatever the price of products would have to be, such that not the rate of profit but the rate of exploitation equalises across industries. This is mostly conjecture on my part though, because again, Heinrich is uninterested in empiricism and outright rejects all attempts to provide a mathematical way to convert between price and value.

There is other interesting stuff to talk about in this, like Heinrich's rejection of Marx's famous tendency of the rate of profit to fall (basically, this tendency was tought of as a well known and indisputable phenomenon back in the day, and in his attempt to make it work in his theory, Marx made an unsubstantiated assumption) or his rejection of the orthodox Marxist assertion that Marx's theories predict the inevitable collapse of capitalism (according to Heinrich, they only predict repeated cycles of crises).

Getting further into all this seems like idle rumination though. The whole theory is unsustainable anyway. And this is unsurprising given that it is over 150 years old. Hot take, an old ass economy textbook from back when the discipline was still in its infancy is just not that useful for making sense of the world today. Capital is historically interesting, and a lot of people find it inspiring. But I think people should stop treating it as a source of truth or insight.

cin how do you keep yourself motivated/not so overwhelmed doing a save with diff generations and multiple sims? i always struggle making it past generation 1

Friend, this is the reason why Indya's arc alone lasted SEVERAL years lol. I'm not really a legacy player or multi-gen player. I've preferred to just play out the faves but the faves became a story and now I'm in too deep I fear.

Take breaks and don't overwhelm yourself trying to put everyone in the spotlight. TFA took a month long break so I could just have some gameplay fun and will likely take another break if this new Murda Pack™ turns out to be any good.

I will get frustrated and overwhelmed easily if there are too many things happening at once so, I take it one arc at a time and try to keep the energy around no more than 2 or 3 OCs at a time.

You don't even have to "make it past gen 1" if you don't want to. Indya and Darren having children was never set in stone for me. It was just their drama but once I felt I couldn't twist it and turn it anymore, we landed where we are now with Hope and her siblings and now her children and family. I could have left it at Indya/Darren and kept coming up with shit honestly but that became boring for me personally.

Remember the importance of secondary characters or supporting roles. Not everyone is your star. TFA is one save with one family and every other sim that interacts with them is a supporting character. I stay motivated because I love that family (downnnnnnnnnnnnnnn) and they are really fun for me to play. Because I have aging and autonomy off in the TFA save, I'm not worried about any random babies or marriages fucking shit up (I voted control freak in that poll lmfao).

Anyway, its okay for your gameplay or story to revolve around a manageable number of sims while others just play the background. The very last thing you want is burn out, which is a very real thing for writers/gamers/artists/literally anyone.

This became longer than anticipated but I do hope some of that helped.

hi cas i’m sorry this is so long but i have a situation and it kinda feels impossible

so my parents are divorced and my dad is has been dating his gf for a few years now. near the end of 2024 he told me and my sibling that him and his gf have decided that we (me,my dad,my sibling) are going to move into his gf’s house this summer. for some background information, his gf has three kids: one of my best friends, who is my age (i’ll call her june) and younger twin boys that are my brother’s age. i was very very upset when my dad told me this and he said that if me and my brother felt the same way in a few months, he would think about not moving. my reasons for not wanting to move are: 1) i’m very attached to our current house (we’ve been living in it for a long time, i love my neighborhood, we live near a neighborhood where some of my close friends live,our house is a 5 min walk from my elementary school, i’m a very sentimental person in general and objects and places are very important to me), 2) when it comes to me and june, i always feel like second priority. june has mental health issues and physical health issues and i have adhd like i also have a mental disorder so i know that we have diff needs and i respect that but i sometimes i feel like i need to be less and have less needs when i’m around her. also there have been times where she hated me and i’m always trying to make sure i don’t annoy her or do anything wrong. also i think she’s a very cool person and i’m always jealous of her and i kind of feel bad about myself. i’m not saying these things need to change, or putting blame on anyone but i don’t want to live in a house where i will feel like that. 3) her brothers also have some mental health things and they are very loud and her house is just kind of loud in general which again doesn’t need to change but i don’t want to live in that environment. i’m the type of kid that stays in their room all day and i just want my calm house. 4) this is just a very big change. their house, rules, etc are very different from mine and i’m not very good with change and also after we move in this summer i will start high school which is also a big change. 5) i know their house will never feel like home. this one is a little harder to explain but i know it’s true.

my dad’s reasons for moving in are: 1) it will save a lot of money 2) he wants to be there to help her with parenting and around the house bc she’s also divorced so it’s just her and her kids there 3) something about wanting to be there for her and support her

i feel like i should include that him and his gf’s parenting styles are very different, her kids are nowhere close to seeing him as a parental figure, her boys stress him out and he frequently loses his temper, and one of her boys is absolutely terrified of him.

also as far as i know none of the other kids like this and my sibling is also very upset

recently i had some conversations with my dad and told him my reasons and expressed that i am still very upset. i didn’t seem to work so today i asked him if there is anything that will change his mind about this and he said “probably not”.

i don’t know what to do. i know some of his reasons are valid but so are mine!! i can’t tell if i’m being unreasonable and i feel like he’s not listening to me

Okay I DEFINITELY understand this, lol, my dad has done this to me TWICE.

Here's the thing...if he has it in his head you're going to move in with them...it's probably going to happen. I'm not trying to say he's right, it's just the shitty truth.

So we need to brainstorm things you can ask for that he might actually agree to. Could you maybe ask for a sit-down with everyone to discuss rules in the house, including quiet times? Rules about who shares what spaces and which spaces are private? Ways to bond and things you need? Can you think of things you can ask for that would make this easier, like maybe taking family pictures in front of the house, going shopping for some things to bring to the new house to make it feel more comfortable, etc? Asking for all of those things is reasonable and it could be that he'll be so excited about you compromising that he jumps at those things.

I know these changes absolutely suck and it makes it worse when people aren't listening to your feelings. Hopefully coming up with a list of things that could make it better might give you a way to be listened to.

Thoughts on the Lore of In Your Eyes. (Still spoiler... I think) This post is actually very long... Sorry for it...

So the past 6 days I have to gather my thoughts on the whole thing going around the lore problem around. And well since I did a post talking about the map itself now I'm going to dig with the lore. Technically about the whole Jack Traveler father issue. However I also want to say other things about this lore map that I found quite interesting so I'm probably going to start with that and later talk about... The other part...

Ok so first let me get my hands on the map with some revelations. This map leaves a lot of questions but it resolve some of them at the same time such as the prophecy. The prophecy I think it's the only thing that can make sense starting from the whole chosen one from Wanderlust, when we talk about a chosen one there's always the meaning of fate in between the lines and when we usually find fate? In a prophecy. It also gives us more depth with Wanderlust chosen one situation since usually when there's a chosen one or a fate a person or people in general would try to avoid it, changing the fate or simple not liking trying to run away from it, resonates with Wanderlust not liking being the chosen right? Apart from Wanderlust there's the other factor in one background reveal during the Disney season and explain to us a little about a certain coach:Amalthea the coach of Montero. A while ago I made a post with the background saying that Amalthea talk to the chosen few and now that we know certainly that in fact there's a prophecy this makes more sense.I've seen some theories and I think the one that makes the most sense and with everything that it's going on its @supyovalk one

Talking about Leda turning into Night Swan with this one I think I'm relief that she actually wants power, not wanting to return to Earth and it's not Traveler who make her evil... But in contrast we have Cygnus that apparently was the one who make by showing her the prophecy or anything regarding of power. Which got me into thinking some questions with Cygnus:Did he actually wanted her to be evil? Then what the whole point in Beggin?He only wanted her to rule Eternyx and not be corrupted or there was something more? How does he knows about the prophecy? For now what we can say it's that... Ok sorry, ahem, now let's get to that part of the lore.

Tbh I don't think I'm mad that Wanderrose ship sunk, don't get me wrong I ship them or I used to ship them until this whole, (Idk how to explain my position with this but with what I'm going to say at the end of this post may give some ideas with my position) but at the end it was a ship, a wish of two characters or more to be together in a romantic way, again wish, with that I kinda knew that there was a chance of them not getting together or yes, it was going to be up to the JD team but with the post my first thought was that probably they had already a couple plan inside the Just Dancers that will be canon and it's wasn't going to be Wanderrose so that's why they kept saying they're just friends.... But I didn't expect that it was that they were going to be brothers and that the thing that I'm mad about with the whole Traveler being Jack's dad. To be more specific I'm mad that they didn't say EXPLICITLY, not by the post of "they're just friends, don't ship them" they could have say it directly. This kind of plot don't need to have hints, it's need to say directly. Moreover they wait TWO YEARS to finally say something about it and still they don't say it directly, it's still subtle with a lot of hints but there some moments that can be interpreted in different ways and with this kind of plot(yes it's use more than it should be) the author or creator have to say it earlier not waiting or reveal it later and that the thing that gets to my nerve.Like I don't have nothing against the whole reveal of an unknown siblings but that's more with a new character not a stablish one. This year for example I've seen two cases of it one where I'm not even in the fandom and the second by a book that I read where in the third book of this series the two main characters get reveal to be siblings all along. The third book that was published TWO years later of the first book and this characters were ship before hell even they share a kiss in the first one and in the movie if I'm not mistaken. The thing is that this kind of plot like I'm repeating over and over again can work better if it was reveal the first moment and not delay it. If they are going to do this then delete that idea. You don't want the characters to be ship? Make another couple or just ignore the ship. That's it's

Now again they may be some incoherence regarding this lore. In my case I'm going to wait until an official lore video about it with no hints or subtle words. The whole situation with Wanderrose for now I'm neutral, I may not ship them anymore but I'm not going to hate any community member for it and still work on their work for it and maybe read some because tbh a lot of them are really good to just toss them out. Plus it's their sweat and tears and work which they try to make it everyday and to have time for it.

Anyways this kinda summarize my thoughts.

Trafalgar Law Type Thoughts: Nico Robin x Law?

There’s two parts of this discussion imo, Robin x Law specifically and then Law x person like Robin

Short answer, Law and Robin would never be possible. I say this because of the lack of interactions, the loyalty to their crew, and the difference in their crews’ proximity in general and goals.

I understand Robin’s character as calm, intellectual, inquisitive, and generous to name a few words. She is someone that enjoys understanding complex topics regarding history and personal relations, she wasn’t born a fighter but has grown from her experiences into a capable battler. She is nurturing to those she’s around and is protective of those she cares for.

These qualities in a person would work well with Law. Though Robin herself is different yk? I see Law respecting her as an ally and opponent-and they’re both aware that the other is interested in history- but considering they haven’t shared their intimate backgrounds with each other I don’t see anything more than that.

I also don’t think that Robin would be interested in Law. I feel like he overall is too much of a reserved individual for Robin. In my opinion Robin is one of those introverts that best flourishes and becomes more lively when surrounded by extroverts. This is one of the reasons I enjoy her dynamic with Franky and why I think they work so well as a pair/ship.

Imo, Law would best be paired with someone that is more outgoing and has a juvenile sense to them. Not like they’re childish, but they still have that childish love of life.

Not saying that Law wouldn’t work well with an s/o with trauma and emotional struggling, but through Law’s novel (I’m not done reading it yet guys..) Law personally makes it a point to present a controlled, calm, and reliable front for his friends so they know that he’ll take care of them to the best of his ability.

Law with someone who is like Robin, more calm, book smart, and has a traumatic past isn’t a bad thing or something that can’t happen. I actually think that of all the possible dynamics Law could have with his s/o this might be like top three.

It’s just not my personal preference yk? But that’s not too important to this discussion.

Law with someone who has a traumatic past is also a little wobbly in my mind because of the baggage that comes with any trauma. Not saying that his s/o has to have a perfect childhood, but if their whole home island got blown up by the navy there might be some layers that need to be peeled back that Law might not want to peel back..

Thoughts on the origin stories (and sort of ranking them)

Imperial Agent - Easily the best of the lot, likely in my opinion because it’s the only one where they weren’t working off an existing character template that is already present somewhere in Star Wars. Instead they were inspired by different genres of spy stories, and it definitely shows. It’s unique and incredibly engaging, it really does capture the feeling of a secret agent spy flick.

Sith Inquisitor - Clearly I just love stories where the player goes insane a little. I think it has its more wobbly moments in execution, but I generally think it tackles a unique story in an intriguing way and there were moments that genuinely caught me off guard (not so much in a plot twist way, more in a “oh that was really interesting writing, I wouldn’t have expected that to happen next” kind of way that kept me engaged). And the way that the player’s background as a slave informs so much of their behavior/personality/decisions without sacrificing the complete creative control that you as the player have over who their character is, extraordinarily well done.

Republic Trooper - This one has its weaknesses, mainly in that chapter two was so boring to me, but chapters one and three are much more engaging, and it also has incredibly strong individual moments. The A-77 mission is often used as an example for good reason, genuinely the most gut wrenchingly emotional moment of all the stories. It handles the realities of war well, and like the Consular story the Dark/Light choices are very well done without being just standard good versus evil or Republic versus Empire. I also felt that of all the stories it was the one that felt the most like Star Wars to me, especially on Corellia (which is normally one of my least favorite planets to play, but here it was my favorite).

Sith Warrior - It’s a good, solid story with no real flaws or weak moments, but also not many stand out moments (there are some, don’t get me wrong, such as the betrayal and the recruitment of Jaesa being affected by your Force alignment, but there’s not a significant amount of these).

Jedi Knight - I’m of two minds about this. I do think it was pretty masterful how they wrote the Light/Dark options to at first be very black and white good versus evil, and as the game goes on the Dark options become more and more understandable and tempting and are the options that seem the most reasonable. The fall to the Dark Side/Grey Jedi is exceptional, as is the resistance of the temptation to remain Light. Unfortunately, if that’s not how you wanna play the game then this story kinda sucks. Dark Knight has been committing mass murder for funsies since the start of the story and no one on the Jedi Council is even mildly concerned about it until like the end of chapter two (and even then they don’t do anything about it).

Bounty Hunter - Pretty good, solidly what you’d expect from a bounty hunter story. I feel like the stakes are a little off though, it’s difficult to pin down a driving motivator for the player during the brief period between the Great Hunt and the Republic arrest warrant, and then as soon as the stakes are raised significantly by said arrest warrant (and the story starts getting really interesting) the Empire contacts you for a job so it’s like oh wait why am I even worried about the Republic? And so the climax has basically no stakes. I do like the final choice though, and how they handle the Light/Dark option so you personally stand to gain from both options and it just comes down to a choice of having a strong code of morals versus having a strong code of honour.

Jedi Consular - I have to agree that this one is up there as one of the more boring stories. It’s not so bad, the mystery genre elements of the writing are pretty good, it’s just very repetitive. I think it can throw people off because on the surface it seems like the Jedi version of the Inquisitor story, but the actual story itself is quite different but if you’ve played Inquisitor first you’re un/consciously comparing them so it seems boring. I did however find the finale very anticlimactic, the cutscene writing felt no different than any other boss and it felt like there was no scene giving any kind of closure to the story (I didn’t even realize I’d finished the story until I finished the fight and looked for my next quest and didn’t have anything). However, it is the better story to play a Dark Jedi from the beginning in, as the choices are designed in a very nuanced way so the Dark options help the war effort and the Republic while the Light options potentially hinder the war effort but save lives/are the more moral choice. That alone makes the story stand out.

Smuggler - Honestly this is the one that I think suffers most from lack of direction. It’s basically just the Bounty Hunter story but you’re on the Republic side. And they never really do a very good job explaining why that is, I know the writers aligned the Smuggler with the Republic because Han Solo helped the Rebellion but like a smuggler helping an underground rebel sect fighting the system is different from a smuggler helping the system itself. Like the Smuggler’s just as much a criminal as the Bounty Hunter, why is the Republic chill with them? It’s basically just the same story as the Bounty Hunter but it feels much more like it doesn’t have a clear vision. I couldn’t tell you what the main story is supposed to be or how each of the big plot points connect to each other.
