The Fun Author Ask Thing, could you share a WIP of Heard Your Heart Beating with us?
Alrighty kiddos, buckle up for the setup for the most self indulgent plot-point I am ever going to write. Please keep in mind, this is still very, very, very rough
___
//Come fix your prosecutor// read Athena’s text. Apollo groaned wondering what Klavier could have done in the hour Klavier had spent at the WAA.
He adjusted his tie in the mirror of his locker, checked to make sure that he no longer looked sweaty from his ride over from court, and shoved his cycling outfit into his locker along with his helmet.
He could hear laughing on the other side of the office’s front door so that was a good sign, he hoped, as he swiped his keycard into the lock.
“Herr Forehead has finally arrived from his battle with the courts!” Klavier beamed at him with his the typical smile that Apollo was now coming to call “on-stage-mode”. Klavier was sitting on the sofa next to Athena, coffee cups and tea biscuits between them on the table. He could hear Mr. Wright bustling in the office kitchenette.
“I am back. I survived Blackquill-“
“Oh is that why you biked over here? Simon didn’t offer to drive you?” Athena laughed, “how mean. He needs to learn to leave it in the courtroom.”
Apollo rolled his eyes, “Probably, but I am sure it has more to do with him needing to go down to the precinct and yell at the poor detective who sent him into court with an outdated autopsy report.”
Mr. Wright arrived from the kitchen, fresh pot of coffee in hand, “Wow. A defense attorney having an updated report instead of the prosecution? Never thought I’d see the day...”
Apollo flopped on the couch opposite Athena and Klavier, “Hey. Miracles do happen...and considering all out our court wins, we shouldn’t be too surprised that they exist.”
“Here. Here.” Klavier said amiably into his coffee.
“So... what’s this about me needing to fix ‘my prosecutor’?”
Klavier made an amused expression, “Ah, is that what I am called? Well I am honored to be Herr Justice’s”
Athena rolled her eyes, “Oh stop with the charm-“ she looked at Apollo, “he doesn’t want you to know that he’s never been to the Tragic Kingdom”
Apollo stared at Klavier, “Seriously?” Athena elbowed Klavier playfully, “Told you he would react like that”
Klavier sighed, “Is it really that big of a deal? Not going to a children’s amuse-“
“HOLD IT!” Apollo didn’t care that everyone about him flinched (“Indoor voice, Polly, jeeze”, Mr. Wright muttered”), “Disneyland is for everyone,” Apollo breathed, “you seriously haven’t gone? Ever? I mean...it’s only in Anaheim. That’s less than an hour without traffic from here-“
Mr. Wright handed Apollo a cup of coffee, “It’s been a while since ‘Mr. Disney Adult’’s shown his face at the office.”
“You say that as if you don’t have an annual pass too, Mr. Wright.”
Klavier appeared lost in the conversation; it was refreshing to see Mr. Tall, Blonde and Unflappable looking out of his depth, “Is it really a big deal that I haven’t?”
“Mm...not so much,” Mr. Wright said before Apollo could object, “well it wouldn’t be a big deal if you were hanging out with someone else, but I mean considering that you two have been spending a lot of time outside of court together, I think it’s more shocking that Apollo *hasn’t* dragged you down there already.
“You act like I go there all the time-“
“Says the person who has scheduled himself to come in late on days where there are morning annual passholder events,” Athena mused, “or how about the time you, Clay and Tracy, just decided to go to Disneyland after work because you wanted corndogs for dinner”
Across from him Klavier made a face, as if silently saying “Corndogs for dinner? Really? What are you five?”.
Apollo met ‘his prosecutor’s’ eyes, “Those corndogs are legendary, and the only ones I’ll eat.”
“He has a point there,” agreed Mr. Wright, “so I guess the big question is- how long before Klavier gets pulled into driving Apollo down to Anaheim?”
Klavier looked around the room at all of the other attorneys as if expecting for someone to tell him suddenly that this was all an act. Apollo meanwhile was mentally running through his calendar to figure out when he would have time to properly take Klavier to the park. There was so much to do at work-not to mention, he would have to prep Klavier for his first park visit.
“Do you like amusement parks?” Apollo asked Klavier. The blonde man simply shrugged, “I’ve only been to a few in my life. My family wasn’t really into things like theme parks; didn’t see the value in them as entertainment. And when I moved here, I just didn’t go-“
“Not even grad-night?” Athena asked, “Junie told me that’s what the student council is setting up for the seniors. It’s tradition. Heck, every high school in Southern California does a school trip there at least once.”
Klavier shrugged, “I graduated early, remember? I guess I could have gone to the ceremony with the class that was graduating that year, but I wanted to get meine badge so I went home as soon as I could to pass the bar in Germany.”
“There’s one in France!”
Klavier sighed, “If I asked meine family to do anything outside of museums and cultural experiences while we were in France, they would have left me at home.”
“Anyway,” Athena said, “If you’re going to hang with Polly, you’re going to have to go to the parks-“
Apollo felt his cheeks heat, “I mean if that’s not what you like to do for fun, you don’t have to-“
“Oh please,” Mr. Wright interrupted, “I can bet that you’ve been sitting here this entire time planning a trip for him.”
Apollo crossed his arms and sat back in defeat. Athena continued to regale Klavier with anecdotes of the WAA’s trips to the parks as well as Apollo’s impromptu visits, “Has he shown you his pin collection yet?” Athena said in a tone that was too close to the tone she liked to accuse him about his and Klavier’s relationship not being as platonic as Apollo let on.
//As if she doesn’t know the actual truth// Apollo grumbled, “Okay enough. Klavier already knows I am a nerd- he doesn’t need any more evidence about it”
“Ach you’re always cool, Herr Forehead,” Klavier smiled again in “on-stage mode”, which made Apollo decide to put Klavier in his place and show him what he was missing.
“When’s your birthday?” Apollo blurted.
Athena groaned, “Oh my god Apollo, haven’t you heard of Wikipedia?”
“I like that Herr Forehead doesn’t feel the need to research me, it makes a rock god like me feel practically human,” Klavier teased and then with an amiable grin, “May 23rd. However-I told you that on Valentines, don’t you remember?” He said at little too suggestively for Apollo’s comfort, “I’m hurt you don’t remember. Here I thought things that were shared during sleepovers were sacred,” he added a pout for good measure.
Out of the corner of his eye, Apollo saw Athena not-so-subtly pull out of her phone to text something, most certainly to Trucy. Great, he was not going to know peace from either of them for the foreseeable future. Although, Apollo appreciated that Athena had the grace to attempt to hide her grin. Whether or not Klavier was aware of what was happening next to him, Klavier only sipped at his coffee.
“So in three weeks. Great, guess what we’re doing to celebrate your 26th birthday,” Apollo announced.
“It’s on a workday.”
“Take off.”
“Don’t you have to work?” Klavier asked
Apollo turned to Mr. Wright, “Mr. Wright, may I have the 23rd off?”
“Of course. Just put it on the calendar.”
Apollo, having won the debate, smiled smugly at Klavier, “Get ready, we have a lot to do before then.”
Klavier looked genuinely confused, “Like what?!”
He was about to ask what Klavier’s favorite Disney movie was, but then Athena’s phone buzzed, “Simon’s here- he needs help bringing up the food...and Trucy says she wants to also go to Disneyland for Klavier’s birthday, I think that’s a good idea; what do you think, boss?,” she asked as she practically skipped out of the office.
Before Apollo could say anything about Athena or Trucy inviting themselves, Mr. Wright smiled and said, “You know what- unless something pressing comes up and Trucy doesn’t have any projects or tests at school, I think the agency needs a mental health day. Maybe Miles and Simon need one too,” he remarked walking towards his office to, Apollo imagined, call his fiancé.
Apollo would have enjoyed Klavier’s genuinely flummoxed expression, except that he remembered how Klavier, despite his celebrity status, didn’t like to draw attention too himself unless it was in court or on stage- and especially not in public. It was the reason Klavier hadn’t shown up to Clay’s funeral after all. He looked at Klavier feeling guilty for putting his friend on the spot,
“Sorry, if you don’t want to- we don’t have to-“
“Nein, nein,” Klavier said with his genuine smile, “you all are so passionate about it, now I have to experience it”
“Are you sure? I didn’t even ask if that’s how you wanted to spend your birthday-I just kinda got caught up in it.”
Klavier shrugged, “Honestly, considering that I usually spent the last few dragged to stuffy VIP lounges of clubs I didn’t care about with people who as it turned out, cared less about me- I think this may be a gut change of pace.”
Well that made him feel better...and a bit sad for Klavier, “I’ll make sure you have a good time and we won’t be overwhelmed. A lot of celebrities go to Disneyland, and they don’t get mobbed- people are pretty respectful of celebrities having their time in the parks.”
“You sound as if you are familiar.”
“Clay...worked there for a summer, celebrities would come all the time as park guests. And aside from maybe helping a celebrity escape a crowd, they don’t give anyone special treatment unless they’ve paid for a guided tour-“
“Oh- are we not doing that, Herr Forehead?”
Apollo snorted,“Hell no, you’re going to stand in line for Space Mountain like the rest of us plebes.” Also I’m not about to suggest we spend $800 an hour for a theme park tour...
Klavier’s laugh was enough to make Apollo feel better and better about commandeering Klavier’s birthday. He was going to look forward these next few weeks in getting Klavier ready for his first time at the park. The thought of movie nights made Apollo feel a bit warm inside. Warm in a way that he hadn’t felt since Klavier had comforted him during his own birthday.
The office door opened, Athena holding it open so that Simon could come through with the large box that contained their dinner. Apollo braced himself for any barbed words from Athena’s prosecutor, considering how the day’s court proceedings had gone. Instead Simon just incredulously regarded his co-worker with,
“You’ve seriously never been to Disneyland, Gavin-dono?”

How To Love
Summary: Brian hoped taking you out on a date would help you both connect more like most couples did. Except, with him being a ghost, going on a date proves to be harder than either of you anticipated.
Pairing: Brian Kang x reader (ft. Day6)
World: Spiritual Connection (masterlist HERE)
Genre: ghost au / angst-fluff / valentines au
Warnings: none
A/N: Happy Valentines to everyone who celebrates it! As promised at Christmas, we are returning to our beloved manor house to see how the ghosts are doing. I did want to write about them all but it appears Brian was a little needy this time around so he got a story all to himself! I hope you enjoy it.
For those new to this world, this story’s context won’t make any sense without reading the previous stories before this. They are linked in the masterlist shared above.
Word count: 6292
Tumblr media
Placing down the book he had just completed, Brian let out his umpteenth sigh for the day. It wasn’t the book’s fault. He had read this story many times over his years of existence and usually it held his attention well.
Tonight, however, Brian was too distracted to let the words fully infiltrate his mind, his thoughts wandering towards the dilemma he was faced with.
Things at the seaside manor had been going well. In fact, business hadn’t been better. Although it hadn’t been long since Christmas break, as soon as the doors reopened, guests would come and go every week in larger volumes than before. And whilst Brian was thrilled that your bed and breakfast venture had really taken off, it had some disadvantages.
Since you were spending your Saturday evening entertaining your guests whilst he was stuck in the study alone.
Glancing down at the love story he had been attempting to read, Brian lifted his glasses to pinch the bridge of his nose. For someone who didn’t feel the same as he had when he was alive, he could still sense the weariness within his soul. He was tired of all of the distinctions between you and him, and reading about a love that held different worries than he had couldn’t ease his mind or heart.
Brian craved something more tangible to his existence. Since his death, over a century had passed by. And during that time, he hadn’t really questioned a lot about anything. Sure, he had his profound moments, inspired to write his feelings down in poetry. But that was it. He had accepted his time and place in this realm. Yet, just because he was dead, didn’t mean his emotions had died off.
Had that happened, he wouldn’t have fallen in love with you.
And it was due to the intensity of such emotions that everything felt insufferable right now.
“Here you are!” a voice called and it perked him instantly, despite it being more masculine than your tone. Turning to look in Dowoon’s direction, Brian gave his friend a curious look. “I should have known to find you inside of a book!”
“What’s up?”
“Sungjin and I are going to go walk Custard down the beach. You keen?”
Smiling lightly, Brian thought how peaceful that would be. Custard was Dowoon’s pride and joy, a dog you had got for his friend for Christmas. Brian was certain Dowoon loved his canine friend more than anyone else in this house. Custard was all too eager to spend every moment – awake or asleep – with Dowoon too.
Now I’m jealous of a dog, Brian lamented, shaking his head softly. Whilst the thought of stretching his legs and attempting to take in the salty air of the sea did sound enticing, he could already see who he wanted to do that with.
And it wasn’t Dowoon, Custard or Sungjin, sadly.
“Maybe another time.”
“Alright, suit yourself! Ah, if you get peckish, Sarah has made her infamous brownie for the house guests and served up the edges on a plate in the kitchen.”
Brian chuckled. “Peckish? Us dead folk don’t need to eat.”
“Doesn’t mean it isn’t a nice concept now and then,” the tall man suggested with a shrug, giving Brian a final look before departing the room.
He contemplated the idea. Brian’s thoughts shifted back to the first time he shared a drink with you when you moved into the manor house as an adult. No longer were you simply the child who grew up in this house each summer when visiting Pearl, your grandmother. You had arrived and stirred a lot more than the dust and bric-a-brac left behind with her passing. Brian found himself smiling at the many times after you had both shared a meal together.
Maybe, Dowoon was right.
Pushing back his chair, Brian made his way out of the study and down to the kitchen, stopping in the threshold when he overheard the conversation between the occupants of the room.
“Shh! What if someone hears you talking? It will look like you’re talking to yourself!”
“Wonpil, don’t be so silly! Everyone’s being entertained in the main living room right now. We’re completely alone down here.”
“You make it sound as if you like that idea,” his friend mentioned and Brian cleared his throat noisily, his bitterness overshadowing any guilt he felt at breaking up the couple’s alone time. Wonpil, clutching his heart, heaved a little with his fright. “You could have given us fair warning!”
“Why? Your heart won’t jump out of your chest with a little scare,” Brian remarked, reaching for a piece of brownie on the table. He held it up and smiled. “I was told to come for this.”
“Yes, but Sarah’s heart could and as much as that could simplify things, I’d much rather she live out a full life until she joins us in the afterlife.”
The only living human in the room swatted a bashful hand out at Wonpil. “Stop it!”
“I won’t! You are special to me how you are!”
And that signalled Brian’s departure from the kitchen, unsure if the brooding overwhelming him stemmed from the fact that he couldn’t really taste the chocolatey goodness of the treat within his hand that he nibbled on, or because he had to agree with Wonpil to some extent.
If you weren’t just like Sarah, someone who possessed a beating heart, that would simplify things. You would be on a level playing field. Brian knew nothing was ever truly equal in relationships – dead or alive. Still, it would mean you wouldn’t be doing everything so separately. He couldn’t help you run the guest house. He wasn’t able to assist you with your guests like Sarah could. Of course, he did his fair share around the manor where he could, and you were always grateful for that. But it didn’t change the fact that if he walked into the living room right now, only you would see him. Further, you couldn’t interact with him other than in subtle ways that wouldn’t bring attention to the living.
Sensing movement by the front door that he had mindlessly wandered towards, he gave a small smile to Jae who was slipping into his jacket.
“Oh bro! Had enough of the books?”
Shrugging loosely, Brian rocked back on his heels. “What are you up to? Do you want-”
Jae tipped his head to the side as he brushed down the collar to his jacket and then grinned. “Me? It’s date night.”
“A-Again?” Brian breathed incredulously and his friend nodded.
“You know how it is. Married life is all about making sure you keep things fresh and healthy. Date night is a part of that.”
Swallowing down a bitter curse that he, in fact, did not know how any of it was, Brian smiled again, albeit more strained this time. “Where are you going?”
“Downtown theatre.”
“Aren't they only showing Little Women right now? You saw that last week.”
“Gotta keep the Mrs happy, Brian,” Jae announced and then smiled as his Mrs, also known as Becky, came into view.
Her ruby lips twisted up with disdain. “I heard you.”
“I know you did and that was why I kept my talk decent,” Jae quipped, leading his wife out the front door of the manor house with a hasty farewell wave to Brian as he left him behind.
Brian sighed heavily once the pair had gone. Even if they bickered more often than not, he was jealous of them. At least, they prioritised having a date night.
Had he ever gone out on a date with you? Sure, he spent most of his time in your company. You would wake up together, run errands in town or the closest city, sometimes walking along the beach like the others were right now. On the odd occasion, if you didn’t pass out early from exhaustion from running the bed and breakfast, you would curl up in his arms and catch up or read books together. Eventually though, you would fall asleep and a new day would arrive just like that.
Time never had much value to him until he started being with you. It felt like there was never enough of it, moments stolen in between house chores and setting up for new arrivals.
The longer he went through the catalogue of his moments with you in his mind, he realised he had never gone out of his way to call anything a date. Glancing at the large event board by the coat closet, he moved closer to inspect the decorated part of the calendar, indicating that Valentine’s Day was just around the corner. Smiling, he finished his piece of brownie with more enthusiasm before clapping his hands together.
He knew what he had to do.
Tumblr media
You smiled brightly when you felt arms slip around your waist from behind you, instinctively leaning back and allowing Brian to step in closer. You nuzzled into him briefly. “Well hello, handsome.”
“What are you doing?”
“What does it look like?” You gestured to the various hues of pink and red that you were using to decorate the living room. “It’s the month of love.”
“The month of love?” he echoed, chuckling softly. “I thought Valentine’s was only a day in February. One in which, I’m certain I heard you proclaim was not your cup of tea.”
Turning around in his arms, Brian grinned at your expression. You scrunched your nose up further. “If I’m honest, it is really cliché. I mean, you should show your partner that you love them every day, right?”
He didn’t answer, simply staring back at you and hoping that you could feel what he did deep down. Brian never questioned your love for him. He just wished you realised how you prioritised him in your schedule.
And how little lately.
“However, from a business standpoint, Valentine’s is the perfect time to whisk your loved one off somewhere to have a little rendezvous. We’re completely booked out for the entire week that Valentine’s falls on.”
Brian’s mood dampened. “Really? You didn’t plan to have even one day off?”
“Now why would I do that?” you questioned, moving away from him to return to your decorations.
“Because you did during Christmas.”
You laughed and shot him a look. “There’s a huge difference between both events. Besides, we had a Christmas wedding to plan for.”
“Would it take another wedding for you to take time off again?” he wondered with a heavy breath and you stopped hanging the balloons, turning back to him.
“Are you okay?”
“I was hoping we could have some time together that week. A whole day, actually.”
You cocked your head to the side, intrigued. “Why?”
“Do you know we’ve never gone on an actual date, Y/N?”
“We haven’t?” Brian shook his head and you fell silent.
“Becky and Jae go on one almost every week.”
“That’s because they can.”
“Why can’t we?” he asked, a little hurt by your response. You could tell and swallowed slowly. “Because I’m not alive?”
“No, it’s nothing like that,” you mumbled, guilt washing over you. “Not at all. Hey! We do things together all the time! We just went to the city together last week.”
“To pick up plant boxes for the vegetable patch.”
“It was fun though. And it was just you and me.”
Brian sighed. “I meant, intentional time together. I want to do things with you like a proper couple does.”
“Can we do that?” you breathed and immediately shook your hands to dismiss your doubt. “Of course we can. We will!”
“You’ll give me one day of your time?”
“How about the day before Valentine’s?” you offered and Brian began to smile. You, however, looked stressed. “I’ll just ask Sarah to step up a bit whilst we’re gone. We will have the best date ever!”
Tumblr media
He should have known with your hesitance that this date of yours would be a disaster.
Still, when you met him out in the foyer by the front door, Brian felt hopeful. You had put in some effort to how you looked; wearing one of the dresses he knew you had dug out of your grandmother’s wardrobe. It looked perfect on you and with a hooked arm extended out to you, Brian allowed you to curl a hand around it before leading the way out to the car.
For the trip to the city, you were both excited. Conversation flowed freely as did a lot of singing. He could see how affected you were after he sang along to a Michael Buble song on the radio, the hand he had held the whole trip growing a little clammy. It satisfied Brian to know he had charms about him still.
But it all turned pear-shaped when you pulled up at the restaurant you had made a reservation at. The maître d looked at you and then frowned. “Is your lunch partner running late?”
“What? No,” you answered, smiling at Brian and then swallowing down your easy reaction. Brian stiffened at your side. “Oh. Yes, they are.”
“I’m afraid right now we’re really busy and so we’ll have to seat you up at the bar. We’ll be able to find you a table when you’re ready.”
“Can’t I just be seated at a table for two regardless?”
He shook his head at your request. “Sorry, it’s our restaurant’s rules.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Brian breathed into your ear but you shook your head subtlety.
“I’ll just go somewhere else,” you announced, turning on your heel and hurrying back out to the car.
Brian stared at you when he was seated next to you again. Your cheeks were red and he could tell it wasn’t only with annoyance. He caressed your face softly. “I didn’t think that would be a rule in a restaurant.”
“It’s fine. We’ll still eat together, Brian. Who needs to go to a restaurant like that? Even though I look like this, I can eat anywhere!”
You both ended up in the food court, your determination now tapered out as you sat across from him staring down at your sushi. The noise within the eatery was louder than the ambience at your first stop and Brian pushed down his disappointment.
This wasn’t where he wanted to take you out to eat today.
“It’s fine,” you mentioned again when you caught his gaze, smiling for his benefit. “I love sushi.”
“I know you do.”
“What’s next on the list after eating?” you asked and Brian reached out for your hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.
“I thought we could go to the museum together.”
You brightened. “I haven’t been in years.”
“It’ll be fun. You love old things,” he commented and you slyly grinned at him whilst nodding.
“You know, I really do.”
With your lunch eaten, you got back in the car to head to the museum together. A renewed energy stepped between you both as you began to look around, Brian swinging your hand in his gently as you walked around.
“Oh look!” you exclaimed, dragging him over to the Victorian section. You lit up as you inspected a selection of men’s outfits. Looking at Brian and then back at the mannequins, you giggled. “Are any of these looks for you?”
“I wouldn’t be caught dead in number three,” he breathed and you giggled. Looking towards the casual outfit on the end, Brian pointed. “That was more like me.”
“Oh, now that is very you!” you exclaimed, looking at his modern outfit and then back at what was once the type of clothes he wore. “Maybe you should try them on again?”
“I’d rather stay like this,” he announced quickly, pulling you away from the display.
For the following hour, it felt as close as it could to a date for Brian. Of course, there were a couple of instances where other viewers would step too close to him and he’d have to sidestep away quickly to avoid being walked through. Still, he was having a lot of fun and he could tell you were as well.
Yet, Brian had become aware of a small group that had been following you both around the museum, and more so of their stares in your direction.
“Who is she talking to?”
“She’s weird, don’t look at her.”
Brian attempted to ignore the jeers from them for some time before he let out a sigh, stepping in front of you with a weak smile. You placed a hand on his torso affectionately. “Hm? What’s wrong?”
“Pull out your phone.”
“It’s already in my hand,” you pointed out, now confused. “I’ve been taking photos!”
“I mean, pull it up to your ear. Do you have your earbuds? Maybe put one in.”
You slowly looked around yourself, realising what he was referring to. Brian closed his eyes to maintain his emotions, hating that you were now aware of the people whispering and looking. He wondered if it would have been better to leave you oblivious to it all.
Forcibly smiling, you pulled out your earbuds and angled your phone towards yourself so it looked like you were on a call. And from that moment out, the trip to the museum became subdued.
“Let’s forgo the gift shop and head back to the car, hm?” he offered when you had made your way back around to the exit, your head lowered in defeat. Brian rubbed your arms softly. “We can go and-”
“I want to find something to remember this outing by,” you mumbled, stepping away from him and going into the gift store. It took a few minutes for your head to lift back up to a level you could maintain without feeling uncomfortable. He could see in your eyes that you were trying to salvage the trip here. Stepping over to your side, he pointed at an arrangement of keyrings with the museum’s logo on it.
“What about one of those?”
You shook your head. “Anyone could have one of them. I want something more us.”
It was a slow process of finding something that you liked. A couple of times you got excited over an item and turned to show him it, only to stop mid-way and cast your gaze around the tiny shop to see if anyone was watching.
It was a keyring and magnet that you eventually settled on, your mood had fallen to a level that he felt he couldn’t retrieve it from. Still, Brian attempted to. “Do you want to go shopping? I’m sure we could cheer up looking at stores together.”
“I do need to get a couple of things from the mall,” you agreed quietly, driving the car to the closest one. With yourself fully armed this time from the start, you relaxed into your experience at the mall. You had done this many times together and perhaps that was why you seemed to grow your confidence again.
“Oh, let’s look in here!” you exclaimed, walking hastily towards a jewellery store. As you browsed, Brian lingered at your side, trying not to take much notice of the items. He didn’t know how to act within such a place. Of course, he wanted to take a deeper look at everything they had in stock. Although he might be a little outdated, even back in his times, he knew the importance of a fine gemstone on a necklace or ring. It made him uncomfortable because he wanted nothing more than to find something for you.
“Anything caught your eye?” you murmured when you looked back at him and Brian shrugged. Smiling, you grabbed his hand and pulled him towards the display boxes. Everything was so sparkly; it took him several blinks to actually focus on anything. You squeezed his hand before letting go, wandering around the store whilst he remained where you placed him.
Brian’s eyes were stuck on a delicate pendant. It held a blue stone within its centre, the metal surrounding it linked in a unique way to hold it together. He decided it reminded him of his love for you.
Brian didn’t even realise he was crying until he felt his cheeks were wet. You approached him calmly, peering at what caught his eye. “It’s gorgeous.”
“It is.”
“Blue topaz is your birthstone too, did you know that?”
He hadn’t but there was no way he could reply, overwhelmed by the pure need for the necklace. His eyes travelled to the price tag and sighed.
A ghost couldn’t exactly purchase anything.
“Excuse me,” you called out and Brian turned to stare at you, somewhat disconnected in the moment. He didn’t hear the rest of your sentence, but when the necklace was taken from the display and you stepped away from his side, he knew what you had done. Walking out of the store, he ran a frustrated hand through his hair, collecting himself when you bounced up to his side and waggled the gift bag. “Here you go! Ah, I’ll carry for you until we’re back at the car!”
“Why did you do that?”
You beamed at him. “Because I could see what it meant to you.”
“I wanted to get it for you,” he explained and your smile evaporated. “I can’t even get you a god damn gift!”
“Brian,” you started but he shook his head, storming away from you and going back out to the car. He laughed bitterly when he was able to slip inside without you unlocking it. Because he wasn’t bound to the same world as you were. Although he could touch you and all the things that your realm held, he wouldn’t ever truly exist in it.
This date had been the worst idea he could ever have. It highlighted all his fears. Inside the manor house, you never seemed unattainable, apart from your endless working hours. But stepping out of the house he had stayed close to for the last century and trying to do something that normal people did had been foolish. Jae and Becky were an anomaly. Brian had learned today that dating was only for people who both either had hearts that moved or had turned to dust years ago.
Tumblr media
Brian was in the study again, this time no book was held within his grip. Instead, you had left him with the small gift bag and headed into your bedroom, locking the door behind you, your tears muffled as he had listened on until he couldn’t take it any longer.
Looking down at the velvet case on the table, Brian snapped the lid open and stared at the necklace you had bought in his stead. He closed the lid with a sigh, only to open it again, repeating his actions even though they were taking quite a toll on his energy levels. He hadn’t expected going out on a date with you to be so exhausting.
No wonder Jae always crashed the day after his outings with Becky.
The door to the study opened and closed, though Brian had no interest in tearing his gaze away from the jewellery box before him. He blinked when a hand picked it up and a low whistle left the man before him. Sungjin then chuckled. “Wow, this is real nice.”
Brian gave no response, though his fingers reached out to touch the velvet once it was back on the table.
“Did you steal it?”
“That would take a lot of energy though perhaps I would feel more at ease had I.”
Sungjin chuckled softly. “No, it wouldn’t make you feel any better. And Y/N would have felt bad too. It’s best to do things in their realm the legal way.”
“Did … did you steal something?” Brian asked, glancing up and seeing the answer in Sungjin’s face. He gaped at his friend. “What was it?”
“A brooch,” he admitted, toying with the stack of books on the edge of the desk.
Brian sucked in a dramatic breath when he realised it was the one Pearl had worn all the time. “That brooch? I thought Pearl bought it!”
“My pride was knocked around from that ordeal. It sucks having to step back when it comes to dating though, huh?”
Brian nodded glumly. “I wanted to drive the car.”
“And hold open the doors?” Sungjin offered in which his friend agreed to with another nod.
“I wanted to make Y/N feel special and enjoy herself. Instead, all we did was constantly remind one another of our differences.”
“The only true difference you both have are that you were born over a century and a half ago and Y/N is from this time we’re existing in now. Your morals will be outdated in her world.”
“Hardly, there’s more and you know it.”
Sungjin shrugged, though his gaze was less nonchalant. “There’s only more if you allow them to be there. Why focus on the unimportant stuff?”
“Sungjin, the fact that I’m dead and Y/N’s not is kind of important.”
“Is it? I wasted far too many years of Pearl’s life thinking just like that, you know. To her, all she cared about was her feelings for me and mine of hers. All couples have to learn to compromise and accept how the other is. You’ve been doing that all along. Before this desire of yours to be more than you are, you were working well together, Brian.”
“Were we? I felt like I never did anything with her,” Brian lamented and his friend moved around the desk to pat him on the shoulder.
“So tell Y/N that, not me. You didn’t need to go all out on some fancy date to let her know what’s really been bothering you.”
“Is this how Y/N feels after talking with you?” he breathed as he got to his feet and Sungjin grinned.
“Hey, I have a lot of experience with this kind of thing. It took me a damn long time to get here though. I don’t want to see either of you spend decades stuck in the wrong situation like I did with Pearl.”
“I wouldn’t let even a year pass by being away from Y/N,” Brian replied and Sungjin clapped him on the back.
“See, you’re already ahead of me. Now, how about you go let her know how you’ve been feeling!”
Tumblr media
You were already asleep when Brian quietly entered your bedroom, slipping into the bed tentatively. When he had been alive, he had dated briefly and so the only arguments he had experienced were with those of his friends and family. Now in his afterlife, you had been his first true love. He didn’t know what was practical to do within the delicate situation afterwards, no matter how many relationships he had studied within novels over the decades. He laid still beside you, chewing on his lip until your body shifted closer, your arm soon flung over him. Brian reached for your hand gently, drawing it up to his chest and placing it there instead.
He knew when the morning arrived that he would tell you everything. Until then, he would enjoy the proximity you sought after as you dreamed, your body now pressed into him at multiple spots.
Despite his lack of actual sleep, Brian felt well-rested when you finally opened your eyes. And he smiled when you didn’t move away from him when you realised how curled up you were next to him.
“Morning.”
“Hi,” you breathed, swallowing visibly. “Brian, I’m sorry-”
“Can I go first?” he interrupted, smiling at you more warmly. He reached out to brush some of your hair away from your face. “I’ve been waiting all night long to tell you how I feel and I don’t think I can wait any longer.”
“Did you not sleep?” He shook his head softly and you gasped. “Brian! You should have woken me up so you could get some sleep after talking!”
“I don’t need to sleep every night, remember?”
“Still,” you mumbled, pouting for effect.
“Can I tell you my thoughts?” he asked and you nodded softly, your gaze not leaving his. Brian smiled, reminding himself to actually start talking instead of admiring the way you respected that he needed to talk. He felt foolish for a fleeting moment.
He knew he could have told you all this before and you would have listened at any stage.
“I took you out on that date yesterday because I had convinced myself that was what was missing from us. I saw everyone around us doing their own thing with those that matter the most to them and believed that to do that with you too, I needed to step up, to do more couple focused events.”
“I did enjoy the concept of going out with you, Brian.”
“I know,” he told you, reaching out to cup your cheek in his hand, his thumb gently running along your skin. “And in the future, I hope we can do other things together out of the house. But the real reason for my attempt is that I stopped valuing my place here with you,”
You frowned. “What do you mean? You are everything to me!”
“So is your business,” he pointed out, sighing when your brows knitted together. “I started to feel it was easier to focus on the living as opposed to me because their needs are more visible here.”
Touching his neck with your hand, you smiled. “You’re visible to me too. But I do understand, I think. Things have been really busy when people started asking for longer stays and I went from working a certain amount of days to seven days a week.”
“Are you tired?”
You nodded. “I thought I had to prove more of myself with running the bed and breakfast. I got greedy from my success. Even when I was tired, I was consumed with doing better.”
“I wish I could help you with it and that we could run this together. But my place here doesn’t stand out as much as yours.”
“Really? You’re my favourite to talk about around the fireplace. A lot of people leave here charmed by this mysterious man they have seen the portrait of in the hallway. Don’t tell the others but you’re a crowd favourite. Must be these handsome looks of yours.”
Brian smirked. “I think it’s all down to how much you talk me up.”
“You know, it’s not the same, but I hope you know you’re welcome in the room during the times when I’m entertaining. You’ve shared your stories with me in the past and I relay them. But you could be there to help me with them. And in return, I’ll try to find balance with how much I let this place overrun me. As much as I love sharing my joy for the manor, all the people who live here are the true reason this house is magical to me. You are my longest friend, Brian. Before all this-”
You gestured between you both with a proud smile before continuing. “-you and the others were my five childhood friends who I felt safe around. I still feel safe here and I don’t believe I’m missing out on anything just because I can’t go eat in a fancy restaurant with you. I’d much rather cook together here.”
“Do you know I adore how honest you are?” he wondered, moving to rest his forehead on yours. “Here I was withholding my feelings because I worried we weren’t real enough.”
“Oh, we’re real, Brian. I realised yesterday on the trip home that I was more embarrassed with myself than I was with our unique relationship. I don’t need approval from anyone but myself to love you.”
“If you could choose to wait for a lifetime where we’re alive together or keep what we have now, even with its differences, would you still choose now?”
You nodded immediately and his heart soared. “Of course. Besides, you promised along with Jae, Dowoon, Wonpil and Sungjin that you’d stay with me here until I’m joining you all over in the afterlife. This is just the entrée to our love together.”
“Are you hungry? You keep talking about food,” he asked with a chuckle and you giggled, nodding.
“I want to go make pancakes.”
“Why pancakes?”
“Well, it’s a special day for a lot of our guests but more so for us.”
“It is?”
You nodded. “Don’t you remember one year where I stayed here as a kid because my parents had to go on a business trip and my grandmother was unwell so you five all stood over the stovetop attempting to make a batch of pancakes for me to eat?”
“You remember that? God, I have all the time in the world to replay my existence and yet you recall that far more easily than I would. Was that Valentines Day?”
You nodded, pulling away from him and padding across your room to a familiar book on your shelf, slipping something out of it. Coming back over to the bed, you crawled to his side and handed over the card. Brian chuckled as he opened it. “You still have this?”
“You were my first Valentine.”
“I thought you didn’t believe in today?”
“I believe love should be shown every day, I’ve admitted that. But I do believe in this day. Not for the reason a lot of others do, just for the fact that it makes me think of you all.”
Brian leaned in to kiss you before brushing your hair away from your face. “You were my first Valentine too.”
“I doubt it. I bet you had ladies lining up for your hand. Look at you! So charming that even the mistresses of the house you served no doubt harboured feelings for you!”
“Are you jealous if they did?” he wondered, following you as you got up from the bed and headed out into the hallway, taking the path to the kitchen. Since it was early, none of the guests were out of their rooms yet.
You shot Brian a look. “Why be jealous when I have you now!”
“Who’s jealous?” Jae enquired when you both arrived in the kitchen, Brian surprised by the full turn out. Aside from Sarah who hadn’t stayed at the manor last night, the full-time residents were all seated at the table in the room.
“I am!” Sungjin proclaimed, pointing to everyone in the room. “Pearl can’t come to visit any time soon like she did over Christmas. Look at all these couples around me.”
Wonpil shook his head. “My love isn’t here yet.”
“Love? So it’s to that point already?” Becky breathed in amazement, clasping her friend’s hand in hers. And then she turned to you. “Y/N, is there a reason you wanted us all here today?”
“It’s pancake day,” you announced and went to retrieve two boxes of premixed pancake mix from the cupboard.
Dowoon grinned and stopped rubbing his dog’s tummy. “You really trust us to make these?”
“I think we’ll be tempting fate again,” Jae agreed, shuddering as Becky stared at her husband in confusion. Jae sighed heavily. “We were in charge of feeding Y/N one year when Pearl was unwell. It took us forty minutes to serve up the world’s worst breakfast.”
“It was my favourite breakfast,” you corrected, handing a box to Sungjin and Wonpil each. “And it’s Valentines. Can’t we all have some time together before I go make my guests feel the magic in the air or whatever it is?”
It was chaotic, to say the least. Still, after all the years that had passed, none of them had mastered the art of cooking in your realm. It wasn’t as if they truly needed to, given spirits didn’t need food to sustain themselves like you did. But thankfully this time, Becky was here and she managed to deter Jae from putting too much batter onto the pan at a time.
Watching everyone with a smile on his face, Brian quietly left the room to retrieve the necklace from the study, taking it out of the velvet box and marvelling at it as he carried it back to the kitchen. It would take him some time to fully accept his pride would be knocked about in this relationship. He decided he would attempt to make you things in the future when wanting to give you a proper gift. Still, he knew that this came from him despite how it fell into his hands.
And when Brian saw you again, he didn’t hesitate to sling it around your neck, doing up the clasp to the chain. You turned and slipped your arms around his waist. “I love you, Brian.”
“I love you too.”
“Hey, Valentine’s is for us all right?” Dowoon exclaimed and clapped his hands together. “I love you all! But I love Custard justttt a bit more.”
“Just a bit? I’m offended.”
“Jae, do you love me more than everyone here or not?” Becky offered with a smile and he chuckled.
“No, I love everyone more than you.”
“Hey!”
And just like that, the room filled with laughter and exclamations, much like it always did when you all were together.
And as Brian held your hand within his, he realised that he liked Valentine’s a whole lot more than he ever had. It wasn’t about being the perfect date. Or having the best relationship either. Even though he had new ideas and couldn’t wait to spend more alone time with you.
But for now, he was surrounded by everyone he adored. And if Valentine’s was the day of love, then he knew he would be full from this year’s one.

Love In Print [Masaru] - Episode 1
Tumblr media
“But Mari, I don’t WANT to go read this on Wattpad, I want to stay here on Tumblr!” Listen, my friend. Let me help you. Here’s all of Episode 1! (But the rest is over here if you decide you want to read it!)
— SATURDAY NIGHT —
She’s started to think of it as the summer of weddings. Like purgatory, but with more flowers.
Reiko sighs. Another Saturday, another charming garden venue. Soft, flickering tea lights float in shallow porcelain bowls. It looks like something lifted straight out of Pinterest, and it’s pretty in all the right ways, hitting every obligatory aesthetic beat. The music is loud and many of the guests are amiably drunk, swaying in slow circles on the dance floor or queuing up for one more lap around the buffet.
Alone at her table, Reiko hides behind the towering lily centerpiece, nursing a headache. She fishes her phone out of the tiny, mostly useless evening bag she’s bought to go with this dress and takes refuge in her work inbox.
She’d love to go home, but it’s too early to make her retreat. Another two hours, she coaches herself. You can make it for two more.
“Come on,” says Ren, prodding her in the shoulder. Reiko jumps half a mile and nearly drops her phone, not that her cousin notices. “We’re missing a cake opportunity,” he whines.
As usual, Ren resembles a figure pulled directly off some runway in Milan. Impeccably attired, hair artfully tousled, a Rolex gleaming from his left wrist. Reiko plucks at a tuft of fur caught on the cuff of his tuxedo.
“You know, there is such a thing as a lint roller. You have one somewhere in your apartment.”
Ren peers down at the wad of cat hair slowly drifting down to the grass beneath their table. “Lint roller? What lint roller?” And then his face lights up. “Oh! You mean that tape-on-a-stick thing from the last time you came over?”
“Yes,” Reiko answers patiently. “That tape-on-a-stick thing. You use it to make sure you aren’t leaving the house dressed in cat fluff.”
Suzu pops up behind Ren. “He likes for everyone to know that he’s more complex than he appears. An insufferable playboy and a sophisticated cat bachelor.” She loops her arm through his and makes a show of sniffing at his clothes. “Ah,” she breathes. “The smell of too much money, layered over eau de too many cats.”
“I have three. How is that too many? And why aren’t either of you interested in getting some cake? This is a wedding. You go to weddings for cake.”
“That’s definitely the primary reason for attending weddings.”
“It’s from Fujiwara’s, you know. They never do weddings anymore. You’re missing the dessert event of your lives.”
Suzu straightens his boutonniere. “You accosted the Fujiwara grannies for these people?” A low whistle. “Wow. Dad must really like them.”
Reiko follows her twin’s gaze. Their father, Ryuuki, is busy holding court at a neighboring table. He laughs raucously at someone’s cheesy anecdote and is having the most fun out of all of them. “It’s all business, I suppose,” she says, unable to keep from smiling despite how little she’s enjoying herself.
Suzu snorts. “Of course it’s all business. Isn’t it always?” To Ren, she says, “Hey, how long before we’ve done our duty for the family market stall? I still have ten pages left to write on a research paper and it’s…” She grabs his arm in order to check the time on his fancy watch. “… 9:34. With half an hour’s drive back to my apartment.”
“You can spare ten minutes to have a slice of legendary cake, Tachibana Suzuna.”
“God, okay. But it better not be weird like that sheet cake you ordered for the charity auction last month.”
“Not weird. Avant-garde.”
“Uh-huh. Also, it tasted like beets and had radioactive magenta icing. So gross.”
“You and Reiko just really have no appreciation for the finer things in life. Let’s go, the line’s only getting longer.”
“Don’t want any,” Reiko pipes up. “I’ll have a slice vicariously, through Suzu.”
“Twin powers,” Suzu concurs, initiating the special handshake they invented when they were six. Almost twenty years later, they’re still augmenting the sequence with new moves. “Anything I ate, Reiko also ate. And vice versa. Page 2, Line 21 in the Twin Manual.”
“The worst plus-ones anybody ever brought to a wedding,” complains Ren. He pours Reiko a fresh glass of water from the pitcher on the table and gives her a pat on the head, a gesture of silent sympathy.
She watches Ren and Suzu as they stop to tease Ryuuki along the way. And then she blinks back the onslaught of unwanted tears, reaches for her phone again, and taps the newest e-mail notification. Three unread messages beckon through Reiko’s blurred vision. She scans the subject lines, head bowed over the glowing screen. Slipping into the steps of a familiar dance, she starts at the bottom with the oldest message first, because that’s easier than confronting her emotions.
PRE-ORDER CAMPAIGN - SPS OMNIBUS EDITION. A reply from the manufacturer about a shipment of Star Princess Sanna enamel pins she asked about on Friday afternoon. Delayed for another two weeks. Not ideal, but better than never getting them in at all. Reiko marks it for a response later.
TENJOU DELIVERY WEDNESDAY. Timestamped a mere ten minutes ago. She isn’t the only one working on a day off. Reiko notices right away that the message has been flagged as important, which is odd. This e-mail appears, without fail, every Monday of her life. Throughout the long history of this exchange, the message has never been flagged as important. At least, not that Reiko can remember.
She almost opens it, curiosity triggered, but then she sees the subject of the next e-mail and momentarily forgets everything else.
ALL DEPTS: QUARTERLY MEETING — MON @ 10AM
A thrill dances through her, momentarily displacing the throbbing ache in her skull. The sounds of the reception fade away. She taps the message and it unfurls into a calendar invite. Representatives from every department at her publishing house will be expected to attend, including Reiko and the other senior marketing staff.
Most meetings are a dreary prospect, especially when scheduled for first thing on a Monday. At these quarterly gatherings, it takes hours to discuss things like sales figures and future business plans. But this one is special, because they’ll finally present the twentieth anniversary plans for DUCHESS Magazine’s most iconic franchise to date: Red Thread. The first manga she ever read all the way through, start to finish. The reason why she applied at Yumeisha in the first place, as soon as she’d graduated.
Reiko accepts the invite and adds it to her burgeoning, meticulously color-coded calendar. She can’t keep from breaking into a smile. She’s still beaming at her phone when she hears the grass crunching softly under someone’s feet and looks up to find that she is no longer alone.
The someone is tall, just about as impeccably turned out as Ren, and wearing a pair of dress shoes so highly polished that Reiko can see her reflection in them. He’s shed the jacket and rolled up the sleeves of the crisp white shirt underneath.
There is only a bowl of tealights to see him by, so it takes a moment for Reiko to recognize the man now seating himself across from her. But if the head of blond hair hadn’t given it away, the green eyes and trademark smirk would have made it very clear within the next two seconds, anyway.
She blinks at him. “Oshiro?”
“Hi.”
“Um, hi. What are you doing here?”
He leans back into the chair and stretches his long legs under the table, instantly making himself at home. “Attending a wedding,” he replies. “Chatting with the bride’s aunties. Waiting for you to pay attention to me.”
“And sending e-mails?”
“No rest for the wicked, as they say.”
Reiko puts her phone down. “It’s weird seeing you outside of work. This is the last place I’d expect to run into you.”
“Why? Because you figured that I live at the office and camp out under my desk on days off?”
She laughs. “I mean, yeah.”
“To be fair, I’d expect the same of you.”
Well, that really is fair. Sometimes Reiko looks up from the endless loop between work and her apartment, her apartment and then work, and realizes that her entire existence can be summed up in three boring sentences or less. And then she’ll go back to her computer screen, her half empty coffee mug, the pathetic little granola bar that will have to serve as her lunch. But that’s just the way of things, isn’t it? At least she genuinely loves her job. It would be much harder to bear, otherwise.
“I’ve considered just packing myself a bag and living in my cubicle,” Reiko admits, without any real shame. In the background, the band segues into their much livelier cover of a depressing breakup anthem. Over the noise, she adds, “At least it would save me a commute.”
“So dedicated.”
She shrugs. “So lazy.”
“Anyone truly lazy wouldn’t be checking her inbox at a wedding reception,” Oshiro points out.
“Guilty as charged. Have you come to scold me for not participating in wedding activities?”
“No, I’ve come to ask you why you haven’t opened my e-mail.” He waves his own phone at her. “I checked three seconds ago. It definitely still says unread.”
“It’s flagged important and with a read receipt? Seriously?”
“Seriously. It’s high priority. Read it right now.” He angles a covert glance over her shoulder, in the direction he came from earlier. “Oh, and if you don’t mind, don’t reply until I’m back over there.”
“Wait, you want a reply, too? What am I supposed to say? You send me the same four lines every week. I have the thing memorized by now.” To prove this point, she clasps her hands behind her back and recites, “Heading to Tenjou on Wednesday. They need endcaps, window decals, sticker packs, blah blah blah, for insert-manga-title-here. I’ll stop by and grab them on my way out. Thanks. Oshiro Masaru, DUCHESS Sales, 81-4-8914-1111, extension 822.”
His demeanor shifts, now part bemusement and part blatant self-satisfaction. “Look, Tachibana, I’m beyond flattered that you hang onto my every word like this. Not surprising. I’m extremely eloquent in my digital correspondence.”
She rolls her eyes. “There it is. I knew it was coming.”
“You even know my extension by heart,” Oshiro continues blithely. “It’s like my wildest dreams coming true. But what I really need right now is for you to open that e-mail and write me a timely reply. By timely, I mean don’t hit send until I’m at my table again. And then I’ll read your response and write you back. So on, so forth, rinse and repeat, until this torture is over and we can both leave.”
“Ah.” Reiko crosses her arms. “You want a prolonged reason to be on your phone.”
“Correct.”
“Because you don’t want to be here.”
“Also correct, but needs clarification. I don’t want to be at this wedding. I do want to be at this table with you.”
He tips his head towards his original seating arrangements. Reiko risks a covert glance and notes that Oshiro’s vacated chair is surrounded by chattering ladies ranging from middle-aged to elderly. Somehow, without ever speaking to a single one of them, Reiko can tell that they’re the problematic aunties who don’t get along with any of the other aunties. Consequently, they’ve been placed where they can ostensibly do the least damage. From the looks of it, they’re having a fabulous time.
Reiko bites her lip, smothering a surge of laughter. “Wow. How did you end up with the best seat in the house? Like, who did you offend?”
“Ha ha. I owed the groom a favor and he cashed in, majorly.” Oshiro leans forward. “They’re a nice bunch, don’t get me wrong, but if they set me up with another of their nieces, I’ll be double booked from today until Christmas.”
“You’re welcome to sit here instead,” she offers. “We have an extra chair. My dad prefers to migrate between friend groups.”
“Thanks, but I can’t just abandon my post. I wouldn’t put it past them to follow me over here, or else I’d take you up on that suggestion. I figure random texts to my brothers will seem rude, unlike important work e-mails. So play along, won’t you? And keep in mind at least one of them will be reading over my shoulder the whole time.”
“What’s that supposed to mean? What on earth do you think I’d be putting in that e-mail?”
“I’m just saying, don’t use this as an opportunity to confess your undying love or anything. Maintain professionalism and all that.”
“Gosh, what a tall order. How will I ever comply?”
“Dig deep, Tachibana. Find that inner strength.”
Reiko pulls a face. “You came all the way here just to make me do this?”
“Yes,” says Oshiro. “You’re welcome. I’ll look for your thank you note in the mail. I also like gift baskets. The ones with baked goods are okay, but no edible fruit bouquets or artisan cheeses. Nobody wants those.”
“But why me?” she persists. “Don’t you have anyone else you can trade fake work e-mails with? What about Ueda? Or your boss?”
“Hey, take it easy. I’m not used to outright rejection.”
“I’m not rejecting you, I’m just confused.”
“What’s there to be confused about? I don’t want to be here. Neither do you. Let’s help each other out.”
Neither do you. Reiko feels very, very obvious, now.
He watches her expectantly. She can tell that he’s fighting hard not to break into one of his insouciant grins. Reiko can’t decide if she wants to smack him or bask in the infectious warmth of his attention, like a deprived houseplant straining to soak up every drop of sunshine it can get.
This conflicted reaction is more embarrassing than being caught on her phone. For God’s sake, it’s just Oshiro.
Their departments — Sales for him, Marketing for her — are often flung together, which means running into him at Yumeisha is pretty normal. They take the same elevator from the lobby and frequent the same break room on the tenth floor. He stops at her desk most Wednesday afternoons, as promised in his e-mails. Once in a while, if she stays even later than usual, Reiko might see him striding ahead of her through the lobby’s sliding glass doors, crossing the street to catch the same train. They never talk much, though, unless it’s about work.
Still true, she concludes, as Oshiro stands up and pushes the chair into place, preparing to return to the Island of Matchmaking Aunties. He walks backwards away from her, hands in his pockets. “Talk soon,” he tells Reiko, smiling as if he’s guessed all her secrets. And then he’s gone, threading his way through the crowd while she stares after him, utterly bewildered.

SEPTEMBER 11
Since 2001, the date September 11th has been a date associated with the life-changing terrorist attacks on America. But previously, the date was one of the busiest in the Lucille Ball calendar, with memorable performances of her three hit sitcoms in three decades. Lucille Ball’s mission in life was to make us laugh - even in our darkest moments.  So while we remember the events of 2001, let’s take a quick tour through the date in the life of Lucille Ball.
Tumblr media
1960
The September 11, 1960 issue of Parade Magazine (which was inserted into Sunday newspapers nationwide) featured a unique and colorful portrait of Lucille Ball. The article inside was “Lucille Ball: Life Without Desi”. The couple formally divorced in April 1960, five months earlier.  This coincided with her last appearance as Lucy Ricardo. Although this would be the first September since 1951 that she wasn’t on series television, she was still working; promoting her new film with Bob Hope called Critic’s Choice. Toward that end, two weeks later, she appeared on “The Garry Moore Show.”
1937
Tumblr media
On September 11, 1937 Hollywood columnist Jimmy Starr of the LA Evening Herald Express, rated the film Stage Door as ‘Outstanding’ stating that “smaller roles were excellently portrayed by Lucille Ball and others.”
1943

The Hollywood Bond Cavalcade, a 16-city, two week railroad tour of American by a dozen Hollywood celebrities, comes to New York City on September 11, 1943 for a gala performance at Madison Square Garden designed to sell war bonds to defray the debt incurred by the USA during World War II. Desi Arnaz had gone on a similar tour the year before - but 1943 was Lucy’s turn. Much of America was still reeling financially and emotionally from the effects of the War.
1953
Tumblr media
Perhaps the most dramatic September 11th in Lucille Ball’s life came in 1953, when she was accused of being a Communist by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC).
Tumblr media
The news broke on the very same night that “The Girls Go Into Business” (ILL S3;E2) went before the cameras in Desilu’s brand new studio. Needless to say, the news could not be ignored, and prompted Desi’s now famous remarks in his pre-show welcome:
“Lucy has always had a clear conscience about this. She has never been a Communist, and what’s more, she hates every Communist in Hollywood. The only thing red about Lucy is her hair, and even that is not legitimate.”
1955
Tumblr media
On Sunday, September 11, 1955, CBS airs the 22nd of 25 repeats of early episodes of “I Love Lucy” under the umbrella title of “The Sunday Lucy Show”. Under the impression that few viewers had a TV set when the series first began,CBS polled viewers to decide which episodes to air in their early Sunday evening time slot (6pm). This week’s entry is “New Neighbors” (ILL S1;E21) from 1952.
1961
Tumblr media
On September 11, 1961 CBS aired the fourth and final re-run of "I Love Lucy” to fill a month-long scheduling gap. This is the last prime-time airing of the series in a regular time slot.
1967
Tumblr media
On September 11, 1967, Lucille Ball kicks off the sixth and final season of “The Lucy Show” with Milton and Ruth Berle playing themselves.
Tumblr media
This was one of many appearances by Milton Berle, who appeared on all of Lucille Ball’s CBS sitcoms, despite being the reigning king of NBC. While all was hysterical on screen, there was a lot of life-changing activity going on for Lucille Ball.
Tumblr media
This is the last episode directed by Maury Thompson, who had started working for Desilu in 1956. Ball heard that Thompson wanted a raise and decided to dismiss him and bring back the show’s original director, Jack Donohue.
Tumblr media
Having made Desilu profitable again, Ball had just agreed to take the big step of selling Desilu to Paramount, dissolving the company by the end of 1967 and starting up her own Lucille Ball Productions (LBP) to produce a new sitcom, “Here’s Lucy,” rather than work for Paramount. This was perhaps the biggest business decision that Executive Lucy would make in her entire career.
1972
Tumblr media
After season 4 of “Here’s Lucy” wrapped, Lucille Ball experienced a run of bad luck. First, the final episode of the season was designed as a pilot for a spin-off series starring Lucie Arnaz, but CBS declined to pick-up the show for production. At the same time, Vivian Vance, who was being eyed as a reliable sidekick for Lucy should Lucie get her own show, was diagnosed with breast cancer.  Finally, in January 1972 on a ski trip to her condo in Snowmass, Colorado, Lucille Ball broke her leg. Instead of canceling the series, Ball had the injury written into the scripts, so that Lucy Carter would also have a broken leg. Almost all of this season’s scripts had to be quickly rewritten or postponed.  The injury meant that Ball would have to limit her physical comedy and musical numbers and re-think the show’s overall dynamics.  It also meant that her plans to start filming the musical film Mame would be put on hold until her injuries healed.  The September 11, 1972 episode that kicked off this extended plot-line was titled “Lucy’s Big Break” (HL S5;E1).
Tumblr media
To add to that, earlier in the day on September 11, 1972 Ball made her first appearance on Dinah Shore’s syndicated talk show “Dinah’s Place”. Lucy makes Irish coffee and tells Dinah how she broke her leg.
Tumblr media
The night before this episode aired (September 10, 1972), Lucille Ball had appeared on “A Salute to Television’s 25th Anniversary” on ABC, getting an award alongside Bob Hope. Quite a busy 24 hours for Lucy fans!
1984
Tumblr media
The week of September 11, 1984, Lucille Ball, now 73 years old, begins a week of appearances on the pantomime game show “Body Language” playing against Charles Nelson Reilly and hosted by Tom Kennedy. She returned to the show over Christmas week in 1984. Lucy was also depicted on the box cover of the board game of Body Language, as well as doing TV commercials for the game. The show managed only a fraction of the audience of other daytime games and CBS canceled the game in late 1985 after only one season on the air.
Through the years, many of Lucille Ball’s co-stars passed away on September 11:
Tumblr media
1959 ~ Paul Douglas died at age 52. He played himself in “Lucy Wants A Career” (LDCH E9) which aired just five months before his death.
Tumblr media
1970 ~ Chester Morris died at age 69. He appeared in Five Came Back (1939, above) and The Marines Fly High (1940) with Lucille Ball.
Tumblr media
1987 ~ Lorne Green died at age 72.  The star of NBC’s “Bonanza” from 1959 to 1973. He appeared with Lucille Ball on “Dean Martin’s 1968 Christmas Show,” “Dinah Shore’s Like Hep!”, “Swing Out Sweet Land,” and “Zenith’s A Salute to TV’s 25th Anniversary.”
Tumblr media
1994 ~ Jessica Tandy died at age 85. Tandy and Lucille Ball were both recipients of “The Kennedy Center Honors” in December 1986. The ceremony was televised on CBS on Boxing Day 1986.
Tumblr media
1998 ~ Dane Clark died at age 86. He was the star of Desilu’s “Wire Service” (1956-57), did two episode of Desilu’s “The Untouchables” (1962-63) and appeared with Desi Arnaz Jr. in “Police Story” in 1976.
Tumblr media
2003 ~ John Ritter died at age 54. Lucille Ball was an outspoken fan of John Ritter, hosting a ‘best of’ special for his hit sitcom “Three’s Company” in 1982. Ritter guest-starred as himself on her final sitcom, “Life With Lucy” (1986).
Tumblr media
2004 ~ Fred Ebb died at age 76. Ebb produced and wrote the Shirley MacLaine TV special “Gypsy in My Soul” (1976) that co-starred Lucille Ball.

Coming Home
It's been years since either Alex or Henry has had a place that they can really settle into and call 'home'. Luckily, Henry has just bought the perfect one.
Kensington has never felt much like a place Henry lives. It feels like a hotel, a beautifully impersonal place to stay for a few nights before moving on. When Alex visits, he sees more of himself in the warren of rooms than he ever sees of Henry (though that may be due to their differing levels of cleanliness). Henry appears in the little things, in his journals and books and that damn copy of Le Monde that makes Alex feel all warm and fuzzy inside, but even the bedroom still feels like a hotel until Alex plops a bag into an ancient chair and lets his shoes fall haphazardly on the antique rug. He leaves things scattered around the room, and Henry asks if he's trying to spread his manifest destiny to his former ruler.
Alex doesn't say anything, and he certainly doesn't tell Henry that Bea occasionally sends him pictures of Henry wearing the sweatshirts and pajama pants he leaves behind. Those are saved in a special folder on his phone, and the way Henry looks in his clothes, everything a bit too short, is one of the best things he can imagine. Kensington may not look or feel like Henry's home, but it is still a place he can relax. It's a place where he can wear clothes that don't fit quite right but remind him that he's loved, wholly and unconditionally.
Alex especially doesn't tell Henry that he's printed a photo from Bea of Henry and David curled up in an antique chair, Henry wearing Alex's old lacrosse t-shirt and reading his copy of The Prisoner of Azkaban, or that the photo is framed on his desk. He just keeps leaving dirty clothes and battered paperbacks and color coded notes around Henry's rooms as if to scream that someone lives there. Someone lives in these staged rooms, and someone uses this museum furniture, and that someone is dating a queer brown American. Centuries of racist, homophobic monarchy can deal.
The White House bedroom is a bit more Alex's than Kensington is Henry's, but it's not really his, either. The White House is, after all, America's house. His family are essentially long-term renters, and no matter how much he tries to settle in, it's still a borrowed space. In four years, some other first child will come along. They'll find the message behind the wallpaper and the few unsealed windows, and maybe they'll paint over his walls like he painted over Sasha's. Hopefully they'll replace the ugly dog painting in the hallway.
He doesn't have quite the warren Henry does, and Henry doesn't settle into spaces the way Alex does in Kensington, but that doesn't mean he doesn't show up in the White House bedroom. He's in the V&A map hanging beside the congressional schedule and in the stacks of classics beside the Hamilton biography on Alex's bookshelf. When he visits, he doesn't stay in Alex's room, but Alex accumulates more and more little pieces of Henry every time. There's the Smithsonian guide book Henry bought and left, the tickets from their trip up the Washington Monument, and the 'emergency jumper' that Henry stores in Alex's closet and Alex absolutely does not study in. He is far too dignified to cozy up in his boyfriend's sweater and let the too-big sleeves flop over his hands (he doesn't know it, but Henry has a framed photo of him working in the jumper and his glasses, courtesy of June). Still, every time Alex hangs something on a wall or moves something in, it's with the knowledge that he will have to move it out in a few years.
The bedroom in the house in Texas that he'd move it to, though, isn't really Alex's anymore, either. It's the bedroom of the person Alex used to be, before he met the love of his life, found out he was bi, caused an international sex scandal, and learned to stop living ten years down the road. It's the bedroom of a boy who refused to look anywhere but dead ahead, and it shows. For years, there was a family photo on the desk, but he'd shoved it into the back of a drawer sometime during the divorce and never bothered to unearth it. There is a photo of him with June and Nora hanging on a bulletin board, but it's surrounded by old to do lists, tutoring schedules, an out of date calendar, and plans for 2016 campaign stops. The walls are decorated with memorabilia from Ravael Luna's and his mom's first campaigns, nearly covering a lacrosse team poster. It's the bedroom of a boy whose only goal was politics, now foreign and slightly dusty from disuse, and a part of Alex cringes every time he sees it. He wasn't happy when he lived in the room as it is now, not really.
Henry says it's good he doesn't fit the room anymore; it means he's grown in the four years since he lived there. That doesn't mean it's not strange to go home to a place that raised him, but no longer feels like home.
His dad's house out in California is the same way, though it never felt like home. Alex has a room there, but it's never really been his, no matter how many campaign posters he hung on the wall or lists he hid between the matress and the box spring. The lake house is the only place from his childhood that remains unchanged, and it's somewhere indescribably special to him, but it was never fully home. It's a place to relax and recharge, a great vacation home, but it's not somewhere he ever fully moved into.
In short, when Ellen Claremont-Diaz is re-elected, neither Alex nor Henry have a place that truly feels like home. Luckily, Henry's bought one. He's bought a four-bedroom Brooklyn brownstone where they can live together, and when he shows Alex the listing, Alex nearly smothers him in affection. They spend election night curled up in a bed that used to be Alex's, looking through floor plans and photos until they fall asleep.
-
When he crosses the threshold of the brownstone for the first time, Henry's hand in his, Alex can't help but imagine what it will be. They'll paint the walls and furnish it themselves, and everything in it will be theirs, al theirs. No more beds bought by dead people, no ugly paintings as political gestures, no jumping through hoops to put a nail in the wall and hang one picture. Henry tugs him forward, leading the way through the house they get to settle into together. Sure, another family may have lived here before, but it feels refreshingly new after their old homes. There are no ghosts in these walls, no centuries of previous owners to contend with. It's a new place for their new life together.
Hand in hand, they explore the living room, deciding where to put the TV and how big of a sectional they can fit in the space. They decide which bedroom to share, and Alex calls dibs on an office, and they plan out a decorating scheme for the guest bedroom that all of their friends and family will be comfortable with. They pick paint colors and enlist the help of June, Nora, and as many secret service and PPOs as they can, and by the end of the day, they're sleeping on the floor of a well-painted house.
The next morning, they take their regular fleet of security vans and spend the morning at Ikea, making final furniture decisions over meatballs and enlisting Cash and Amy to help carry boxes. The photo Henry takes of the living room two hours later shows Amy sitting on the couch she's built and Nora leaning against a bookshelf she put together while Alex and Cash are surrounded by a pile of boards and screws that should be an entertainment center. Eventually, a pizza dinner happens on the coffee table, with paper plates, the first card games in the new house, and lots of laughter. That night, they've moved their sleeping bags to a mattress that should go on a bed they haven't built yet.
They take the building and move in process slowly, interspersing it with walks around their new neighborhood and coffee runs to new shops nearby. They've dedicated the second day to their individual offices, but by noon, Alex has spent as much time in Henry's office as he has in his own, and the same is true for Henry. Which means that after lunch, they're dragging Henry's desk and bookshelf into Alex's office, re-organizing a bit, and planning another trip to Ikea to furnish a second guest room in what used to be Henry's office. By the third night, they're sleeping in a bed (though it doesn't have sheets yet), and when the moving van arrives on day four, the furniture is finished and it's beginning to feel like a home.
Day four is dedicated to all of the personal belongings left in their respective former homes. Cash and Amy help with the heavy lifting as Henry fills most of their bookshelves, leaving an anthology of queer fairy tales on the coffee table. Alex settles into the kitchen, hanging pots and pans from a rack on the ceiling and adding a command hook for his apron near his beloved coffee machine. Henry hangs a framed, pressed green carnation from Bea beside two of Alex's framed photos: one of a gay couple holding a sign that says "STAY OUT OF MY OUR BEDROOM" and another of a man whose jacket says "IF I DIE OF AIDS- FORGET BURIAL- JUST DROP MY BODY ON THE STEPS OF THE FDA". Nora stops by with a plant and a pair of pride flags for them, and June brings them a photo book of supportive street art from around the world. Shaan buys Henry an 'out of the closet' mug with queer figures from history on it, and Zahra gets Alex one that says 'Dumbest Creature on Earth' as housewarming gifts, and they find a home between the coffee maker and the electric kettle.
David finds his beds scattered around the house, one in nearly every room so he has a place to go if he needs it. By the fifth night in their new home, Alex walks into the bedroom to find Henry cuddled up and reading under the framed issue of Le Monde, wearing one of Alex's t-shirts with David dozing at his feet. He looks content and settled, and it is the most wonderful sight Alex can imagine.
Notes:
Ya girl's back to working in theatre, and since I got into theatre through set that means I'm back to thinking about physical space. I always feel weird writing about settings in prose, because I love the little details but I feel like describing them detracts from the overall mood and plot. Last time I was struggling with something I wrote up a little firstprince study, and y'all were great, so I'd love any feedback on how space is working for you in this. Is there enough of a balance between little details and bigger plot points? Does the space feel real/like it helps develop character? Let me know!

On Point With: Shanita Bump
Tumblr media
This HO-riffic It Gurl is equal parts glamour and ghoul, and her stellar special FX makeup skills--along with her drag / burlesque hybrid performance style--is making her the Bloody Belle of the Brooklyn Ball. This Halloween season is the time to get to know the wily witch, Shanita Bump!
Thotyssey: Shanita, hello! Thanks for talking with us today!
Shanita Bump:  Hi Boo, thanks for having me!
So, DragCon has come and gone... did you engage?
I did, I was at Acid Betty / Unicorn Skin Cosmetics’ booth!
I’m sure you two looked perfectly monstrous together.
Of course, Holo monster realness!
How do you know her?
I didn’t personally know Acid before working the event, I got asked by Ms. Ter!
Tumblr media
So it's Halloween month... this must be a busy time for you as a drag performer and makeup artist.
It’s been Halloween since last Halloween for me... everyone else is just now getting here! “Busy” is definitely an understatement; I have a decent amount of shows coming up. Followed by special FX gigs I’ll be doing. And then, yes, my day job!
That would be working at the awesome Gothic Renaissance.
They have extended hours during October, so it’s never ending. But honestly, I thrive in this kind of hectic schedule.
When you’re constantly surrounded by darkness and evil all year round,, can you find a place in your black heart for things like kittens and unicorns?
I’m just a big cotton ball spray-painted black, with one spike. I love cute, small, gushy things. I LOVE kittens, but personally I’m more of a reptile dad.
Tumblr media
Let’s get to your origin story... where’s you’re hometown, and when did this art and aesthetic come into your life?
I’m originally from Sandusky, Ohio; it’s a small town. I’ve always been into darker things since I can remember. Growing up, my favorite movies were Beetlejuice and Nightmare Before Christmas. Y’know, I went through that whole emo phase and never grew out of it. I started doing special FX in high school, and played with it more once I started going to hair school--I should of went to FX makeup school, but oh well! I’m self-taught, and I’m doing an okay job if I do say so myself. But once I moved to NYC and started working at Gothic Renaissance, it became more easy to express my aesthetic.
Do you have a favorite look that you’ve pulled off?
My favorite recent look was the one I wore to Bushwig! Where my shiny teeth and JonBenét Ramsey meet. I collaborated with two close friends of mine: Glitter Macabre and Matilda.
youtube
Amazing! So if you don’t mind me asking, how do you identify gender-wise... and does that inform your makeup or performing at all?
I’m a cis femme and my drag is just Dead. Like, I don’t consider zombies boy or girl or anything between because there’s nothing, lol... just decomposing corpses. But I think even my makeup is still very femme.
Zombieism transcends gender! When did you first start appearing and performing as Shanita? I started performing a year ago! I just really wanted to be spooky, dress up, and perform, so drag was the best way to express it.
You recently made it to the finale of the Mx. Nobody pageant!
Yeah, I came in second! I love [pageant hosts] The Nobodies so much, and this competition is wild. The pageant has such a huge variety of performers, and all of them were really fucking talented. I had really gross ideas that I wanted to show, and this pageant is exactly the place I would be able to do it.
Tumblr media
You've got some gigs afoot!
Lots of ghoulish things coming up! I’ll be at Wallbreaker next Thursday, October 11th [at Macri Park]...
Tumblr media
I’ll be doing Puteria October 13th at Tilt...
Tumblr media
Otterbox, October 14th at The Deep End...
Tumblr media
...and Sinner’s Kit Kat Cabaret on 10/18 at Bizarre Bushwick.
Tumblr media
Then on Sunday the 21st it’s“Keep Easy” at The Keep...
Tumblr media
On Friday, October 19th I got Straight to DVD! I’m really excited--this lineup is so horrific. I love being surrounded by my spooky sisters!
Tumblr media
And then on Friday the 26th you are at Dromedary Bar for “Let’s Have A Seance,” another Halloween show!
Yea I can’t wait for that, too! I’ll be with [host] Laé D. Boi a bunch this October.
Tumblr media
Speaking of seances... have you encountered any actual ghosts, ever?
My aunt had a ghost named Pete who was a friendly ghost, and made himself present. I also had a room where someone died in, and my room was always a negative space and cold. I had a lot of crazy dreams when I stayed there--once I was out, they never reoccurred. It doesn’t spook me out, but I definitely don’t like energies in my house if they not paying rent!
That's fair!
Tumblr media
Back to the gigs, you’ve got Deep End Brunch on the Saturday, October 27th. Then the night before Halloween, you're going to be with Emi Grate for Last Month Tonight at the Rosemont, which is a drag / talk show. Are you more of a Watch What Happens Live Real Housewife talk show guest, or a full on Jerry Springer?
I don’t think I’m either, I’m definitely a New York (Tiffany Pollard).
Tumblr media
What else?
I have another gig 10/27 I’m doing something with Kayvon Zand, which will be announced soon! So yeah, there’s a lot of chances to come get spook’d by me! And on 11/2 DJ Accident Report [of The Nobodies] is putting together some bad witch tingz for y’all. TBH, I don’t even know too much about the event, but y’all will find out in time. We love extended Halloween!
Tumblr media
Yasss, busy bitch!
A ghoul on the go!
Have amazing shows! Last question: What will be the season's most terrifying remake: Suspiria, Halloween,or A Star is Born?
I’ll go with A Star Is Born for 600.
Thanks. Shanita!

In the footsteps of the Eagle Huntress
On the western edge of Mongolia, The Adelaide Review visits the Golden Eagle Festival, which is experiencing an influx of tourism thanks to a remarkable former champion receiving global acclaim. The descending plane casts its shadow over western Mongolias parched desert mountains dusted with the first snow of winter. Below us, the sporadic sight of white yurts the circular tents known locally as gers of the regions nomadic community offset the prevailing view of desolate brown chasms of cracked earth. Wedged in the Altai Mountains just 100 kilometres from the Kazakhstan border, the Bayan-Olgii province logs one of the lowest density populations on the planet, but for one weekend a year it enjoys a statistical upwards jolt. Today my ATR 72 flight is at capacity, with 70 international tourists journeying to this unforgiving district for the annual Golden Eagle Festival. For many, the roots of their pilgrimage to this landlocked nation can be traced to the actions of a single local: a teenaged girl named Aisholpan. Two years ago, English director Otto Bell introduced the world to Olgii schoolgirl Aisholpan in his award-winning documentary, The Eagle Huntress. Premiering at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, the film traced the quietly determined 13-year-old Kazakh as she pursued the regions centuries-old tradition of training eagles to hunt foxes, wolves and other quarry for their fur. No mere bloodsport, the local nomad culture has historically relied on the furs for clothing, a trading resource and for fortifying their gers against the Mongolian winters abrasive sub-zero temperatures. While The Eagle Huntress showed Aisholpans father Nurgaiv passing on his hunting skills to his daughter with a calm wisdom, not all locals were depicted as being so supportive. Although Kazakh eagle hunting can be traced back more than a millennium, some elders were ruffled by the fact a young girl was taking on a historically male-dominated tradition. Aisholpan answered the resistance with an act of subtle, dogged resolve: she beat out an exclusively male field at the 2014 Golden Eagle Festival. To accentuate the coup, Aisholpan and her bird Aq Qattanari (White Wings) notched up a record time in one event.
Tumblr media
Ultimately awarded a BAFTA for best documentary in 2017, The Eagle Huntress was expertly underpinned by three powerful film tropes: cinematography capturing the countrys inhospitable beauty; an engaging and unlikely protagonist; and perhaps most triumphantly, a subtle display of defiance against a hoary patriarchy. What began as a young girls fierce determination to follow in her fathers footsteps resulted in Time Out labelling Aisholpan one of lifes trailblazers a feminist pioneer. Fast forward a couple of years since The Eagle Huntress release and Aisholpans community has been buoyed by an influx in foreigner travellers. Along with around 80 eagle hunter competitors making their way to the 2018 Golden Eagle Festival on foot, horseback and by camel, approximately 1000 international tourists have travelled to a barren location on Olgiis outskirts. A dustbowl valley resembling a Martian moon, the site was chosen almost 20 years ago for pragmatic reasons: it was close to town and offered a robust mountain slope from where competing eagles could launch. Local police valiantly attempt to maintain parking order as cavalcades of incoming four-wheel-drives spit up dust, the grime blowing onto the ad hoc bazaar of local vendors whove set up colourfully crude stalls of confectionery, jewellery and local furs. In front of the flat bed truck doubling as a shaded vantage point for judges, VIPs and the MC, a roped off area marks out the exhibition zone for the festivals two-day programme. While also offering a showcase of other Kazakh traditions (including kokbar, a tug of war on horseback where two riders tussle over a sheep carcass), its the eagle events drawing the largest crowds. Olgii resident Dosjan Khaval has been to all 19 of the annual Golden Eagle festivals. A multilingual Kazakh, Khaval has spent a decade building a local travel company and, as the head of Bayan-Olgii Tourism, is now a regional heavyweight. His business has seen a favourable uplift off the back of The Eagle Huntress. Everyone is proud of Aisholpan because she has affected not only local Bayan-Olgii tourism, but also Mongolian tourism, Khaval says. Local people understand that a lot of tourists now have information about Mongolia because of her. In these days of social media more people are spreading the information about Aisholpan to the world and every year the number of tourists is increasing. Even on my summer tours now, most tourists have watched the movie. When the official figures are stripped of business visits and international workers, Khaval says Mongolias annual tourism figure sits at just 130,000 less than the number Australia welcomed in an average week in 2017. A calendar highlight like the Golden Eagle Festival provides the rural territory of Bayan-Olgii an important financial boost. This year at the festival we were expecting around 1200 international tourists, Khaval says. When you add Mongolians, in total its up to 4000 people. Mongolians who live in other parts of Mongolia do not know about this culture, so a lot of people are interested in this and more are coming every year. I dont think the Eagle Festival is going to just boom, but we have observed a slow increase. Inaugurated as a one-day event, the festival schedule has expanded to two days as more traditional Kazakh pastimes have been added to the roster. An alcohol ban has been introduced this year after 2017s festival descended into drunken mayhem, with reports of intoxicated hunters falling from their horses, fights intermittently breaking out in the crowd and police resorting to tasers to deal with unruly locals.
Tumblr media
A hunter ready to launch While theres a lingering element of Wild West temperaments in play, the 2018 Golden Eagle Festival brushes away last years blemishes in favour of civic pride. Over the crackling tannoy, the weekend festivities kick off with a nod to the teen who has increased focus on this region: Aisholpan, renowned throughout the world, has brought glory to our province. In the wake of Aisholpans success, more local females are training eagles and competing in the Golden Eagle Festival. Based around 50 kilometres out of Olgii, 15-year-old Zamanbol trains eagles with her father, Talap. While she fails to make it beyond the first round of competition this year, Zamanbol proves popular photographic fodder for the intrusive black lenses of global travellers. Far more at home calling her eagle down from cliff crags than experiencing her horse being surrounded by photographers, there are moments when Zamanbol appears to be physically retreating behind her eagle for sanctuary from the SLRs. Dosjan Khaval suggests young blood such as Zamanbol and Aisholpan has revitalised a Kazakh skill that risked dying out before the Golden Eagle Festival was introduced at the turn of the century. Until Aisholpan, no other girls had entered the Eagle Festival as a huntress, Khaval says. After Aisholpan won, right from the second year, there were more young girls who tried to become an eagle huntress. Now there are maybe eight or nine girls that are trying to be like Aisholpan. The acclaim, spectacle and splendour of the Golden Eagle Festival has also seen an increase in young local boys following in the footsteps of their forefathers. The younger generation didnt want to hunt with these eagles as it takes so much work, Khaval explains. You need to train the eagles, go up the mountain when its minus 35 degrees With the eagle festivals, theres been an increase in eagle hunters and there are many young teenagers also participating now. It continues our culture, plus of course its good for income because of tourists. The Eagle Huntress hasnt just resulted in financial reward and cultural renewal. An Asian Review story in June this year even suggested the film had played an important role in the acceptance of Kazakhs within the Mongolian community. The minority group accounts for 100,000 citizens in a national population of three million, with alleged racism blamed for traditionally keeping the Bayan-Olgii border province (where 90 per cent of the population are Kazakhs) out of political decision-making in the countrys capital Ulaanbaatar. Its a weighty assertion to be placed on the shoulders of a high school student who simply showed a unique connection to her eagle. As the finals to identify 2018s champion eagle hunter progress in the arena, I spot Bayan-Olgiis most famous resident beyond the fragrant smoke of the kebab vendors. Astride her stocky bay mare, Aisholpan is beautifully presented in a traditional outfit of white fox fur, embroidered pants and bejewelled leather belt. The heavy outfit is at odds with the 25-degree conditions, but Aisholpan smiles serenely as her international fans mill around for photographs. Despite Aisholpan attending the Golden Eagle Festival this year as a special guest rather than a competitor, there are no officials keeping watch over their local dignitary. If the crowd becomes as unruly as 2017s mob, the most famous Mongolian since Genghis Khan only has her eagle White Wings to offer protection.
Tumblr media
Zamanbol For almost an hour Aisholpan poses for tourist photographs, apparently aware of the power her film has had in showing the world the beauty and wonder of her homeland. Shes a one-woman international export in a region with so few commodities they import from their Russian neighbours everything from eggs to electricity. Although her English is limited, a translator relays some of Aisholpans comments to her impromptu audience. The 17-year-olds eagle regimen depicted in The Eagle Huntress remains unchanged as she completes her final year of high school in Olgii. I have school on Monday to Friday and during the weekend I practise with my eagle, she says. When I finish study I want to be a doctor. The success of The Eagle Huntress saw international education institutions scuttling to offer the gutsy Kazakh girl scholarships to attend respected universities in England, the United States and neighbouring Kazakhstan, however Aisholpan is yet to announce where shell study in 2019. In the meantime, shes making the most of being in her arid homeland with her eagle and her friends. The film had a big influence on my life, Aisholpan says. My friends are proud of me and they are glad that I let the world know about our culture. A day after the festival, Dosjan Khaval reflects on Aisholpans success. Four years after her Eagle Festival win theres still some local dissent over the eagle huntress term as shes never taken White Wings hunting by herself, but her importance to the community is undeniable. People still treat her the same here and most of the people like her, Khaval says. Whatever they did with this movie, it was good for Mongolia as an advertisement. Khaval suggests Mongolias deficient infrastructure, dearth of human resources and fractious political stonewalling restrict the developing nation from making the most of its tourist potential, but every year more people get information about Mongolia and our services are getting better and better. In the future, I see theres going to be more tourism. Hollywood isnt finished with Aisholpans story, either. Khaval says Sony Pictures are currently adapting the story of Mongolias famed eagle huntress into a multi-million dollar cartoon. In Kazakh, Ai means moon, Sholpan means the first star which comes out in the evening, Khaval says. That is what Aisholpan means. A remarkable light in dark times, Aisholpans star continues to shine. Kevin Smith, who wrote and directed the 1994 independent cult hit Clerks, its 2006 sequel Clerks II and the upcoming next installment Clerks III, will join franchise stars Jason Mewes (“Jay”), Brian O’Halloran (“Dante Hicks”), Jeff Anderson (“Randal Graves”) and Trevor Fehrman (“Elias”) at the first FAN EXPO Portland, scheduled for January 21-23, 2022, at the Oregon Convention Center. They will greet fans, sign autographs, pose for photo ops and conduct Q&A panels and a live performance of the “Jay and Silent Bob Show” on Saturday, January 22.
For one of the first opportunities in over a decade, fans can get an in-person autograph and/or a Photo Op with the Real Jay and Silent Bob in character. Priority and general admission seating for the Jay and Silent Bob Show as well as the Ultimate Jay and Silent Bob show package (VIP seating, photo op, autographs) are on sale beginning today.
In addition to Clerks, Smith has made popular movies like Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back and Red State. Through his podcasting company Smodcast.com, Smith hosts numerous shows including “Hollywood Babble-On,” “Smodcast” and “Jay & Silent Bob Get Old.”
The “Jay” in that tandem is Mewes, who has also appeared in several of Smith’s films among 100+ film and TV credits. The New Jersey native has also appeared in a variety of films, television roles and video game voiceovers, including Pauly Shore is Dead, Bitten, Breath of Hate, Silent but Deadly and “Hawaii Five-0.”
O’Halloran made his film debut in Clerks and, like Mewes, appeared in numerous Smith productions, including Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma. He has reprised the “Dante” role in several iterations of the franchise, and last year had a regular turn in the series “On Our Own” and co-starred in the film Wit’s End.
Anderson appeared as “Randal” in Clerks, Clerks II and the TV series based on the film. He also had roles in Smith’s Dogma and was seen in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” series and directed, wrote and starred in the 2002 film Now You Know.
Fehrman joined the Clerks family in Clerks II and will reprise "Elias” in the now-filming Clerks III. That came after a recurring role in the series “Encore, Encore” and a regular spot in “Odd Man Out.”
The Clerks fivesome joins a growing FAN EXPO Portland guest roster that already includes the Back to the Future foursome of Michael J. Fox (“Marty McFly”), Lea Thompson (“Lorraine”) Christopher Lloyd (“Dr. Emmett Brown”) and Thomas F. TGIWednesday and a download for releasing the effects of Mercury Retrograde
TGIWednesday News
So yes, with Mercury Retrograde, it’s generally an S-show for the rest of the month for most folks.  Even my youngest son who is a Keto spartan eater, tried some of his daughters fast food (think highest quality place here) only to get headaches and stomach aches for the next 24 hours, after that he tripped on his daughter’s toy and broke his big toe all on the same day his A/C went out and it’s Summer in Florida folks which is like being in the Indonesian jungle!  I asked him, “Do you understand what Mercury Retrograde is now?” and even he laughed.  He and his older brother grew up on my special brand of woo-woo but both are super smart linear thinking (got great memories and height from their mom) but even still they will give pause to what Dad has to say because I speak with purpose.  Not willy-nilly, not gossip.  If I tell you something it is for the most part from spirit so you better listen up.  All of the above is about communication and in today’s video we’ll address and ask to resolve Mercury Retrograde with Grace and Ease.  Oh and check out my replay on Monday's "Let's Talk About It!" show with Dr. Sarah we talked a whole lot about muscle testing and we addressed clearing Mercury Retrograde and raging politics AND weather like earth quakes, hurricanes, tornados, flooding etc.  Tons of stuff in today's e-newsletter and as always it free.  Enjoy!! Please add Granny Ruth to your prayer list she fell and hurt her head and went to the ER but she should make a full and complete recovery.  We already had one miracle in that she only needed three staples to her head wound and a shot and they sent her back home the same day.  Please keep her in your prayers.  ON DECK..... the audio mp3 "MyBeliefWorks™ for Restoring The Fountain of Youth" has been recorded and is getting prepped for the shop for release any day now - Here's what another early listener had to say:  "Well Jimmy Mack, you've really done it this time. Your new mp3 managed to cover every single possible item that one could think of for "youthing it"! The little details seemed to matter more than ever. The next morning I still felt extremely positive and happy, almost childlike.  I think I went back to infancy. It was a physical and mental feeling of being free and happy and deserving of it all! Yep, just like a kid, not over-thinking anything and living for the moment! This MP3 is truly delightful and powerful. Thank you so much Jimmy, I know you put a lot of work into this one!" - Catherine D. / Virginia
Also in progress... "Financial Windfall" which will be the 4th in a series on money and increasing your wealth, attracting abundance.

"I have been doing your YouTube downloads and purchased The Tackle Box online and putting that into practice for myself and others, it has shifted things for them (they don't always know I'm doing it) and me. Right from the start I felt the fish energies strongly as I listened and practised what you said. I love it! Will continue this way for now as money is a bit tight, but I am working on that too." - J.L. / Australia
