Back in the day, (around 2006 or so, I'd wager) I decided to try making a Bag End-inspired diorama display thing for my Lord of the Rings (and friends) figures out of plastic canvas and yarn. (No pattern, I was just winging it.) Here are some pics of how it turned out. 😉

The front with the famous round, green door. I also gave them some lattice-work windows and a couple of plant pots with greenery, just 'cause. 😉

This is the wall that was beyond the window and plants, on the left side as looking in that orientation. I couldn't really do a hill without it looking weird so went with a tree motif on both sides.

Everybody needs a table with a vase of roses on it! And yeah, that's a Nazgul wearing a tea ball strainer on his head. It was from a joke at the time. Also, we see our Hobbit guests putting their cloaks away in the closet.

It's a little known fact that Darth Vader LOVES a nice tree swing! He even brought a droid friend, d'aww. That's my Xena poster on the wall in the background, btw. One of my most favorite Xena pics ever!

I also made Shadowfax, Gandalf's horse!

He can stand on his own. And yes, I made that fishbowl, including the Very Famous Fish Rear End on the side panel, lol! Nothing but UTTER ACCURACY around here, thank you very much. 😜

The chair was made from a kit. The cushion comes off and you can store things in the bottom box part. The mug of hot chocolate has marshmallows on top and also the rim raises up so you can store small things in it.

The flower vase was also from a kit. I famously got my hand stuck in it while doing the bottom stitch to finish attaching it to the base. I thought I might have to unstitch it a bit to get free but thankfully didn't have to. Absolutely no one who saw me with a plastic canvas vase stuck on my hand laughed. 😑🤣

(As well they should have. I laughed, too, once I got my hand out of there, lol!)

My mom loved lighthouses so I made her a day and night version. They're the same size but this was 2 separate pics edited together and the different angles made the night version look smaller.

Anyway, that's a few things I made back in the day. Nothing sophisticated but I just enjoyed playing around with it. The canvas got really hard to find for a while and then got very expensive once I located it again, so I stopped making things. 😢

Oh, almost forgot to add the pic that made me think to post these to begin with: Barbie with one of my ducks from my earthquake post.

I made a bunch of these little ducks for a project I never completed, then found them in a Ziploc bag the other day. Now there are little ducks all over the house, lol! 🦆💖

PS - I may have posted these pics before. I know I did on my Livejournal but couldn't find them on Tumblr. If this is the second time you're seeing them, though, apologies. Ais is old and the memory just ain't what she used to be. 😑😉

Just to Keep the World at Bay - Chapter 3 (read on AO3)

“We’re supposed to do what?”

Billy can’t have heard right. But Coach Nelson is, in fact, holding a puzzle box in his hands and staring them down, unwavering.

“Solve a puzzle, Hargrove. Together. Or did you think I’d put the two of you running circles around the court for an hour?” He asks, the sardonic tone of his voice accentuated by a thick, raised eyebrow.

This is not how Billy thought doing detention with Harrington for a week would go. Coach Nelson had tracked Billy down at lunch to let him know he was supposed to meet him and Harrington in his office after school let out, and at three thirty Billy marched himself to the gym hallway, ready to be bored out of his mind for the next hour.

Now Coach's frowning at him like he’s offended Billy thought so low of his creativity for detention activities, but, to be fair, all Billy’s ever done in detention is sit at a desk and do homework.

Billy glances at Harrington, and finds the same confusion he’s feeling staring back at him.

“A puzzle?” Harrington asks, brows pulled together.

Coach sighs. "A puzzle." He shakes the box at them. It has the picture of a bunch of dogs and kittens laying on a blanket and playing with yarn in a wintery background. "The two of you are going to assemble a 500 piece puzzle for an hour over the next four days, working together. I'll keep the unfinished puzzle safe here in between detentions. At the end of the week, you're going to have a nice picture that symbolizes friendship and teamwork that you're going to cherish forever. Understand?"

Well, at least they're not doing trust falls. This sounds exactly like any proactive, millennial team building bullshit Billy's ever heard of, but the fact that they're doing it indoors and don't have to try to walk with their legs tied together makes it a little better.

"What happens if we don't finish it?" Harrington asks.

Coach gives him a look, "Then you do more detention until you're done. Until you learn to work together," He says, looking down on them like he's imagining they'll break out into a fistfight over puzzle pieces. And given that the last Coach seen of them was Billy punching Harrington, he must think it's within the realm of possibility.

Coach looks from Harrington to Billy slowly, like he’s measuring them. He’s been on the receiving end of these looks during practice often enough, and Coach Nelson has a way of looking at you like he’s staring into the depths of your soul. He’s a good coach, from what Billy’s seen, and an alright guy. He’s a tall, Black man, standing over both Billy and Harrington at six-foot-three, and a solid wall of muscle, dressed in his usual combo of a polo shirt and a dad hoodie. Today, his polo’s beige.

The long suffering look that Coach gives both boys makes him look old.

Anyway, Billy’s not gonna be the one to tell Coach Nelson that he and Steve settled their differences by having sex in the locker room the day before, and Harrington doesn't seem inclined to say anything, either.

It’s better for them both that everyone in school keeps thinking that they don’t get along that well. Better for Billy to keep Harrington at arm’s length. If it ever gets out that he and Harrington had sex, Billy’s gotta make sure it doesn’t sound like anything more than a joke.

The less people notice, the less they talk about, the less they wonder why he’s hanging out with Harrington all of the sudden. He’s not sure Harrington can come up with a reason why he’s hanging out with Billy fast enough other than he’s getting his dick sucked.

It’s just smarter to be careful.

🌟 What is your favourite type of crafting (knitting, crocheting, sewing, embroidery, etc) and why?

so crafts I've done are knitting, crochet, and very recently have been dabbling in pottery

crochet is definitely my favourite! I knit for a few years and the stuff you can make with knitting is really cool, but my manual dexterity is actually not that great and knitting never really felt natural even just in terms of like, the basics of holding the needles, even after a long time of working at it. plus crochet just feels soooo fast compared to knitting and I love that quicker gratification. and I love all the squares! satisfying to make and super pretty

I gave pottery a go bc I like tactile crafts and it's definitely fun! doing it at a studio is expensive and kinda stressful though bc I'd rather make stuff in private. I think I’m gonna try doing air-dry clay stuff at home and see how that goes. I do want to do a wheel class at some point though!

my current project is kind of on hold while I give my wrist a rest/fuck it up in a different way playing persona 5 all the time, which is a shame bc I'm very close to being done. i'm making myself a jumper and it's nearly done, just gotta do more ribbing and attach it all together:

I made my dad a jumper last year and it was somehow very easy, I had to kind of eyeball size but it came out fitting perfectly without ever needing to adjust

this gave me profoundly unrealistic expectations for how easy it is to make a jumper that fits. goddamn. I'm a gauge checking convert thanks to this thing but even after checking and measuring a lot I've still had to remake sections of it several times

but I looooove the yarn so much:

all the river washed yarn colours are amazing and it took me a long time to choose one. I really love yarn with like semi-subtle variance in the colours, and yellow and purple is one of my fave colour combos. in subtle lighting it just kind of looks like a nice purple, but it goes super vivid and almost pink in lots of natural light

it's definitely not the most technically complex thing Ive ever made but I adore this bag I made for my sister:

have never felt so conflicted about giving something away lmao. the colours work so nicely together and she gets compliments on it all the time

at some point I want to make a bunch more of these squares and try and make myself a cardigan

i'm also pretty proud of some of the stuff i made in pottery class that are not fired yet, gotta show those off once i pick them up next week

Didn't buy enough yarn for the baby blanket I'm making and now that yarn is discontinued 😩 there are a few Etsy sellers out there selling some but like......do I wanna spend another $30 dollars on this project? Other options include: getting a different yarn and adding right onto it (making some kind of Frankenstein blanket), getting new yarn and starting from scratch, or some combo of the two where I unravel a bunch of it and try to alternate yarns to make it look at least a little more intentional? Sigh

PSA to newer knitters

bc it seems no one is telling y'all some of this:

You do need to make a gauge swatch, for anything that's meant to fit a human body especially, but also to check whether your yarn + needles combo is going to make the kind of fabric you want. If they don't, you need to do it again with another needle size, and check that, regardless of whether the pattern says you're already using the "right" size. Yes, even if you're using exactly the same yarn the designer did.

The swatch needs to include whatever major techniques are in the project. If it's got big sections of stockinette and of garter, you need to swatch both. If parts of the project are knit in the round and parts worked flat, you need to swatch both. Many people's knit & purl gauges are very different!

If it's heavily cabled, you need to do a swatch of the cable pattern, several repeats both wide and tall. Lace? Swatch a big chunk of that lace pattern. Stranded colorwork? Dear gods yes, swatch the actual designs involved, as well as plain stockinette. It's not going to be the same.

Your swatch should be significantly bigger than the area you need to measure, in each technique. So if the pattern says the gauge is 15 stitches and 20 rows for 4", you need to cast on at least 22-24 stitches and work 30+ rows. More than that, if you're not sure your yarn is the same size as the one the designer used.

Using the actual cast-on from the project is a good idea, because it lets you practice it and also see how it interacts with the fabric growing out of it, but it's not going to be part of the gauge measurement. Same goes for any edge treatment/selvage stitches and your bindoff. You'll be measuring a 4" square in the middle of the work, so your math isn't thrown off by distorted stitches near any edges.

Oh, and you need to block your swatches. Ideally in whatever way you'll wash the finished object (good way to check if that yarn really is superwash!) but at least get it soaking wet, squeeze it out, and let dry flat. Don't stretch or hang it unless you'll do that every single time you get the garment damp (lace swatches obvs can/should be stretched for blocking), just let it dry. Now measure it, carefully. Measure in a couple places, and average your results.

I could write a bunch of caveats & exceptions, and no, I don't actually do all of this every time I sit down to knit a sock. I just start the toe & measure once I get going, & decide how many stitches I'll need then. But A) I've made 20+ pairs of socks in the past few years and B) if I'm super wrong & have to unravel 6" of sock, so what? But you do not want to finally get through a complicated sweater yoke, reach the underarms, and try it on, only to find you were way off. Or wash a finished garment & find it grows 3 sizes, or the fabric opens up so much you can see right through it and it hangs wrong. Heaven forbid you steek something before you realize it's the wrong size.

Also, experience. The more you have, the more corners you can cut - but never all of them! And if you're fairly new to the craft, or just to a certain technique, you don't yet know which corners are essential.

I know proper swatching can feel like a waste of time, and yarn. But the yarn is usually recoverable, and the time is worth it.

my obsession with yarn has finally forced its way into my work

I take no blame in this decision, I was just walking into town to grab me a sweet bit of lunch (seriously though if you fancy the best vegan sandwich or bagel with a plant-based sausage roll (or person food for that matter) you will ever consume in your life go to Tofurei I swear to god they are the reason i’m in my overdraft) and I passed this sewing shop which had a bucket of yarn on sale outside. If there is a yarnaholic anonymous group, let me know because I have a draw in my flat which suggests a serious problem. I stood there, staring at this beautiful bucket of man made fibres trying to find a reason to fill up my arms and make some purchases when it hit me

So I know from making multiple yarn lampshades (I told you, I have a serious addiction) that coating that delightful string in PVA will hold it together however you wish soo I started making some swirls.

also I do not recommend crafting on the bed, it is not practical

Basically, my thought process was if I make a bunch of these swirls then I can make bushes and tree foliage?? out of them and it will look so fun and natural and give a fab separation between the environment and my characters.

To do it I mixed 1 part of multipurpose PVA with 1 part tap water in a tiny bowl (edit: ramekin, they’re called ramekins) and shoved a load of yarn in it. With the gloves I have an abundance of because I crave weird hair colours, I pulled the yarn out squeezing it as I go and then using the non-painty part of a paintbrush, I swirled that moist string into a sweet little swirl.

I got two types of yarn, a looser threaded and a tighter threaded. I thought the looser one would be better because it should hold more glue but honestly, it just looks worse? I mean I have decided that it would actually be quite helpful to show a difference between bushes and tree foliage so it didn’t just look like a bush on a big stick (which actually isn’t what trees are??) so I guess it still is a blessing.

They came off the plastic that my giant sketchbook is still wrapped in from when I bought it super easy which is nice but does now mean I can’t unwrap and use that sketchbook until all my nature bits are complete because I don’t believe in clingfilm. They also held the swirl shape perfectly so yay, my idea worked!

I didn’t make a mass off swirls, just enough to test out all my colours once the PVA dried and to see what combos worked well. Please ignore my laptop stickers, I just liked the sparkly pink background.

First up was this combination and I sat there and stared at it for a while before going

this one is just gross, don’t combine warm green with cold green it doesn;t work

Turns out I like just a solid colour! Because there are different layers the shadows do give a nice tonal change and it means I can have different coloured bushes for fore/mid/background!

I assembled my swirls with a hot glue gun and only burned myself once and I am actually in love with how it looks, I think it will look fab with the watercolours on paper that the rest of the animation will be so hip hip hurray, I feel accomplished.

I’d be open to going but I’m about 50/50 on whether I’d actually enjoy it. I love being outside but I also love sleeping in my bed. Would you rather sleep in a tent or under the stars? I don’t know. What insects are you afraid of? Centipedes/millipedes and caterpillars. Too many legs. Have you ever had a secret admirer that left you notes? I had a weird secret admirer my first year of undergrad because I sat in the same seat every Soc101 class and noticed one day there was a little note on the desk “girl with the lip ring sits here?” and I did indeed have a lip ring. Are you close with your cousins? I used to be close with them when I was little... sadly it’s out of sight out of mind for me. Are you close to any aunts or uncles? Same as above. When I’m physically with them I am but when they aren’t around (97% of the time) I hardly even think of them. That sounds super fucked up but that’s all I got. Are you close to your grandparents? Although it’s a turn of the century machine it’s hardly been used and it’s a VCR/DVD combo and the DVD tray won’t open without the remote. I think I priced remotes and the replacement is the same as a universal so I’ll go with one I know will work.

I’d asked Jamie if we could go to one of the craft stores in the area. We always swear we’ll never shop there again, but somehow forget how terrible everything is and wind up there (mainly for the $1 yarns because I’m a sucker). Craft Store also has Prismas and Koor-i-noor pencils sold individually.

We wind up in the parking lot a few minutes early, discussing the best place to find carbon paper for one of his projects and we’re hanging out there. Jamie and I loathe being at the door of a store right as it opens. We’ve both worked with the public (I still currently work retail while he works in a bizarro office)

I noticed that there’s a car that’s pulled up near ours and Jamie makes a joke about how “all the old ladies need to get their yarn fix” (sic). This woman gets out of the car along with a grandchild and practically hustles the grandkid across the parkinglot to the doors of Craft Store.

After the doors are open, Jamie and I walk in and there is the woman with the grandchild, loudly complaining about a display. We walk past her, complain about the Weird Smell that permeates the store, and go in search of yarn for the Combo Breaker blanket.

I’m holding onto yarn while Jamie says he wants to look for something and Impatient Lady almost plows into us with a buggie. She scowls and zooms off; I make terrible jokes about the glue display. Jamie and I make our way over to the individual pencils and we hear this loud complaining but can’t quite make out what is being said.

We decide to make our way towards the register (the one and only register open at that time of morning—granted, they usually only have one register open at a time). Lo and behold! We are behind the Impatient Lady. The woman in front of her pays for her items and leaves content with her purchases. We’re discussing something, I can’t even remember what, and waiting patiently. Grandchild is wandering across the front end of the store, looking at the Impulse Buy items as I’m aghast at the price of those damned fidget spinners ($15 at this particular store).

My migraine is becoming worse (I don’t know what it is about that store, but it always gives me some sort of headache when I’m in there. It’s probably the permeating Smell) and we have someone standing behind us. Impatient Lady is angrily telling the cashier that the price of the item she picked is $X and not what it’s ringing up as. This woman has a buggie full of different items, most seem to be “on sale, it was on an endcap.” Jamie and I exchange glances and an “oh gods” moment. Cashier calls for backup, who decides to go to the register waaaay over there. He’s not the best cashier, but he rings up the items. The person who was behind us, has followed us to this cashier. Impatient Lady is still arguing with the original cashier over the price of a skein of yarn.

I feel bad for the cashier that had to deal with her.

Jamie found the whole thing hilarious. This woman was impatient to get into the store to buy the things she wanted. She was in there maybe a handful of minutes before we were, she grabbed a bunch of stuff from roughly the same area of the store, zoomed over to the cashier at the first possible chance, and yet we were able to get out before she was (even with the slowness of the cashiers, which I think is a requirement for that place), which probably made her even angrier.

It's a ridiculous story, sure. But it’s still kind of funny. I don’t know, maybe it’s instant karma for being pushy.
