Atlantis AU - Character Designs
This was waaaaaay too much fun! I guess there’s something about Kingdom Hearts characters that translates really well into the aesthetic of Atlantis. Story setup and character bio’s are below the cut!
In the year 1920 world renowned archaeologist Professor A. Wise discovers a book known as The Shepherd’s Journal, which he believes may hold the location of the Lost City of Atlantis. With the help of his two best students, Professor Wise makes sort work of decoding the ancient Atlantean language, unlocking the book’s long held secrets. He presents his findings to the famous adventure Yen Sid in hopes of receiving financial backing from him for an expedition to the Lost City. While Yen Sid himself is now much too old to venture out on such an arduous journey, he enthusiastically agrees to financially support the venture. All that remained was for Professor Wise to assemble the talented crew required to see the expedition through.
Kairi: Kairi is a University student studying history and linguistics. She is one of Professor Wise’s top students and helped him in the decoding The Shepherd’s Journal. When presented with the opportunity to join him on the Atlantis expedition she excitedly agrees the moment he asks her. On the outside Kairi appears to have a very positive outlook on life and a rather happy go lucky attitude. However, this persona is a mask Kairi uses to hide a deep pain she has carried all her life. Born out of wedlock to the disgrace of both her parents, Kairi has always been seen as an outcast in her family. Her wish to be educated at a University far away was only agreed to by her wealthy family so they may finally be rid of her for good. With the exception of her friend Roxas, Kairi feels she has never been truly loved by anyone. That all begins to change, however, when upon reaching the city of Atlantis she meet’s a mysterious Atlantean man with the most charming smile she’s ever seen.
Roxas: Roxas attends the same University as Kairi, studying history and archaeology. He and Kairi met in their first history class together and became fast friends. Upon learning of Kairi’s family and troubled past Roxas promised that he could be her new family, and that they would always be friends no matter what. He was the second student who helped Professor Wise decode The Shepherd’s Journal. Unlike Kairi, however, Roxas was less eager on the idea of actually travelling to the Lost City, fearing the journey there would be fraught with danger. Kairi comforts him and tells him that so long as he won’t regret it some day, then he shouldn’t force himself to go on the journey. After thinking on her words and knowing deep down that not seeing Atlantis would haunt him for the rest of his life, Roxas agrees to join the expedition. After all, who knows what sort of other worldly treasure he may find? Or perhaps whom he may find.
Terra: A commander who served in the first World War, Terra is recruited for the expedition along with a number of other ex-soldiers for their military know how and leadership skills. While cool and stoic on the outside, on the inside Terra has become a troubled man, scared by the horrors he faced during the War. Having seen hell with his own eyes, he is now desperate to see “the other world” wherever it may be.
Xion: Adoptive sister of Axel and mechanical engineering wiz kid! Xion, along with her older brother, were both personally recommended by Yen Sid for the expedition. There’s no engine she can’t fix. Xion makes no secret of the fact that she and her brother are only in this for the money so they can keep financially supporting their family. But despite that mentality she has a kind heart, and finds herself easily making friends with Kairi and Roxas.
Axel: Like his sister, explosive expert Axel is in this for the money, plain and simple. He was also recommended by Yen Sid, and has well over a decade of experience with explosives. Axel likes to make friends with everyone, whether they like it or not. Roxas and Kairi were doomed to be his new best friends from the start.
Sora: Growing up Sora always appreciated how lucky he was. Despite having no parents and no royal title to speak of he was somehow accepted as a ward of the Atlantean Emperor. He grew up within the palace walls and became best friends with the Prince. He had to be the luckiest orphan around! Sora thought that he had everything he could ever want, that was until he came across a mysterious girl with impossibly red hair on the outskirts of the city, who claimed to have come from the world above. Sora knew from the moment he met her that he was a goner. He just hoped the Prince wouldn’t be too mad…and why are all the rumours that Sora may actually posses Royal blood after all suddenly re-emerging?
Riku: The Prince and heir to the thrown of Atlantis. Riku understands his duty well, but that doesn’t mean he always sticks to the rules. Much the the distain of his head guard, more often then not Riku can be found sneaking out of the Palace with Sora to go hunting, or explore more of their mysterious home. The boys both know that once Riku becomes Emperor their time together will no longer be free. They swear to one another that until that day comes they will spend every moment they can together. It is during one of his many expeditions with Sora that they come across the party of explorers from the world above. Riku notices that Sora seems instantly taken by the girl with strange red hair, and even he must admit that there is something about her...
Aqua: The Prince’s head guard and and attempted voice of reason, Aqua is a woman who will do anything to protect her Prince even if that means protecting him from himself. While she does her best to maintain a stern exterior appropriate for her position in society, on the inside she has an incredibly warm and loving heart. She will just as soon scold Riku, Sora and Ven for their inappropriate actions, as she will offer them heartfelt advice and comfort whenever they need it. When the Explorers first appear Aqua does not trust them. While some of the newcomers seem friendly enough, others among the group appear to have darker motivations. And then there’s the tall man in the group, with brown hair and a haunted look in his eyes. There’s something about him Aqua can’t seem to figure out, but she determined to find the answer. For the sake of the Prince’s safety of course…
Namine: There was once a time in Namine’s life when everything was normal. Her days would pass and nothing strange or out of the ordinary would happen. She could read and draw to her heart’s content. Then one day, through no fault of her own, she somehow got mixed up in one the the Prince’s crazy adventures and by the end of the madness had seemingly become friends with the Prince and his best friend, Sora. Ever since then Namine’s life has become one ridiculous adventure after another, so it wasn’t really much of a surprise when Sora came crashing through her front door one day exclaiming that strange people from the world above had somehow appeared in Atlantis. What did take her by surprise was when she finally laid eyes on the Explorers she found that she couldn’t seem to take her eyes off one of them in particular. A young man with blond hair and a lyrical voice she just can’t get out of her head.
Ven: When Ven first signed up to be trained as a Royal Guard he had expected a tough training process that would teach him to be both strong and disciplined. What he had not expected was for the Prince and Sora to take such a strong liking to him that they would insist he join them on their expeditions at every opportunity. Caught between his duty of obeying the Prince’s request but also to follow Aqua’s commands, Ven often finds himself receiving an earful from the head guard. But once the lectures are done Aqua always admits that, while Ven shouldn’t leave his post, at least the Prince had taken some form of protection with him. When the Explorers arrive Ven is initially excited, but like Aqua he quickly becomes suspicious. There’s just something in particular about the Explorer with messy jet black black hair that sends an involuntary shiver down Ven’s spine.

I started rambling about my experience with kh and then it turned into khux and then it just turned into me rambling about Ryou and my art journey????? enjoy I guess,
it’s very long but there’s art in there :)
It’s funny to think about my kh journey as a whole tbh, I grew up watching my mom play video games, which included kh1 and 2. I wasn’t allowed to play the playstation2 we owned BUT I did have a gameboy so the first game I played was CoM (after my mom finished it ofc,) so I guess you could say I’ve always been passionate about kh “””side games””” lmao but I did fall off of kh very quickly bc again, I wasn’t allowed to play our PS2 and also I Am A Terrible Gamer I’ve Never Finished CoM I’m sorry you all had to find out like this, but then 358/2 came out when I was in middle school and!!! I didn’t care and I didn’t play idk why lol
Anyway, fast forward to high school I’m like 15 and my older sister, who HAS been keeping up with kh, has a wallpaper on her phone of roxas and ventus. And bc I haven’t kept up I say “nice roxas wallpaper” and she says “thanks but it’s roxas and ventus” and I proceeded to get so mad that I was determined to prove to her that her wallpaper was just roxas twice and then I fell down the BBS rabbit hole and suddenly I was reading about vanitas and then I’m reading the fan translations of the BBS novel and I’m crying??? I am sobbing???? and that’s how I actually got into kh for real lol we are vanitas stans before we are people,
It’s so funny how I thought I was some kh super fan, knowing all this stuff that I spent so long reading and rewatching cutscene movies, but I never once, SOMEHOW NEVER ever came across khx. It’s so absurd and bizarre I seriously have no idea how I never once encountered khx prior to khux. I suppose that has to do with the fact I wasn’t involved in the fandom? In early high school I had stepped away from fandoms as a whole and I didn’t have any interest in really posting content or interacting with fans anymore bc of how burnt out I was from a previous fandom,
but khux released! and I was so hype and excited for it! on launch day I was a senior in high school, I had ran around to every “nerd” and weeb I could find in school to ask them to join my party and fun fact about me is I have crippling social anxiety I literally refuse to start conversations irl so holy shit I was OUT HERE doing the MOST
My player just originally had my name (Matt) but everyone in my party had fun names so Ryou was born! High school was one big yugioh phase for me and ryou bakura is one of my favorite characters ever so it was just the logical name choice lol I quickly started creating Ryou, the character, as well. I was also leaving my homestuck phase and that + vanitas obsession made This character design (art circa 2016)
Tumblr media
If y’all are familiar with my kh oc’s you might notice that keyblade now belongs to my kid Monty LOL
Anyway that got scrapped quickly for the chip and dale outfit (which is where Ryou’s trademark goggles are from <3) Goggles have been a staple of my character designs for a LONG TIME so like, it had to be done, (that’s a separate ramble about a separate oc tho)
OG Ryou was an interesting guy; he was a young party leader with this overwhelming responsibility on his shoulders bc of his status as a party leader. In his original story, he also struggled heavily with darkness, much like Terra but for Ryou it was more that the darkness was controlling him and not like a source of power like it was for Terra
Tumblr media
A big part of early Ryou I kept, however, was the crushing awareness of loss. One of my party members (the strongest one at the time,) had left without saying a word and I was very confused and hurt. This was around the time the ephemera plot was happening so I decided to incorporate it into Ryou’s story; having him experience losing a friend to darkness since it’s so normal for wielders in Daybreak Town to just disappear, and this would unintentionally become a theme for both me and Ryou as khux friends would just randomly disappear.
I was desperate for khux at this point and I decided to watch the fan translations for khx and GOD, god, was I obsessed. I couldn’t stop thinking about the foretellers. And I’m not going off about that here bc I already did that, but I actually started entering fandom again! I did it slowly, I started on tumblr before this blog was made altho it was me sending anons to the few khux related blogs I could have lol a friend convinced me to get twitter where I got involved with the ffxv fandom, which led me to the kh fandom and eventually the khux fandom there which is what REALLY got me going on khux.
I joined discord servers, most of the servers I’m in are khux related, and from there I joined the khux oc rp (shout out to anyone there who might be reading this lol here’s some art from the beginning of the rp,)
Tumblr media
It’s SO FUNNY how the RP influenced me so heavily. I hadn’t RP’d in YEARS, I used to have a strict no oc rp policy, but here I was? And the funny part is, I had barely developed Ryou. I had scrapped his original story and all I had was POST WAR Ryou so I literally had to reverse write him; I had only ever written him as a depressed, guilt ridden adult, but it was a fucking blast and I have such fond memories of this rp when it was active,
But anyway, this encouraged me to get more serious about art! I started drawing, writing, cosplaying, and roleplaying when I hadn’t done any of that stuff in a very long time. The first time I ever drew a background was for a deviant art khux competition actually LOL
Tumblr media
also! I always think extremely fondly of the drawing I did of Aced in the keyblade war. It was also one of the first backgrounds I ever drew and it felt like my real starting point in the khux fandom. It got a ton of notes on here and someone wrote a tiny fic in a reblog which just made me SO HAPPY like it really felt like people were noticing me :) I was going to draw a matching Ira but!! I just never did!! One day tho, it’s on my art bucket list to redraw this along with Ira,
Tumblr media
Aside from my personal growth, khux was great for my social life ngl, I made SO MANY friends online and got to meet a ton of people irl over the years! It’s crazy to think about all the people I now know and talk to? It honestly makes me really emotional. I’ll never forget taking the train into NYC and meeting up with discord friends. Going to conventions and talking with people about the latest khux update? Absolutely insane and those were some GOOD TIMES, if I thanked every khux friend or even just person who made an impact on me then we’d be here for a LONG TIME,
Tumblr media
Fun fact, for my Lauriam cosplay all I needed to buy was the wig I just owned his outfit LOL also? Probably retiring that cosplay ngl people treated me like absolute garbage when I wore him and it led to a lot of confidence issues for awhile ngl. That’s probably one of the only memorable negative experiences I have with khux; it was great when khux people recognized me but for kh fans that weren’t in khux? They were FUCKING MEAN??? fuck kh fandom at large, I only care about khux fandom,
This leads me to another huge part of my experience in khux fandom: THEORIES!! I used to write SO MANY and oh my god my brain was so full all the time. It was a huge appeal for me in the fandom; I had been previously writing theory posts in the RWBY fandom and it just migrated over to khux for me lol I had done a ton of theorizing around Lauriam tbh, it was really the only reason I liked his character at all bc initially I did not care about the dandelions, anyone who wasn’t Skuld I was like “please leave Now thanks”
A funny part of khux fandom I never intended to be apart of is the MEMES, I really only started doing memes as stress relief bc college had me so busy all I had time/energy for was these quick little shit post drawings.
Tumblr media
The first meme I made, file name “invi despair” LOL we need to get her a girlfriend smh anyway, I think in my senior year of college I did a bunch of rapid fire memes all in one month bc the stress of finals was getting so bad afdgfhdgf as far as I know my impact on this fandom will be my memes bc all I do now is enter a kh/khux server and introduce myself and I go “yeah I draw art. here’s a meme” and everyone goes OH YOU, honestly I am nothing if not a clown
Tumblr media
I’ve talked so much idk where I’m going with this. Khux is just a good game even if the gameplay actually kind of really sucks yknow lol but it was the first game I played where I like, REALLY got into the meta and the mechanics. I used to read so much on the mechanics and watch youtube videos on which medals were worth pulling for. I was never a whale or a top player exactly, but I could rank well if I tried lol I’ve made it to the top 100 for solo rankings, my party has made it to top 10, and in pvp I’ve made top 300. I’m not the highest level in my party but FUCK do I know how to manipulate this game LOL
And with all that hard work, the strategies, the theorizing, the content I’ve made-- it’s been my life for 5 years. I’ve logged into khux almost every single day. At the end, I have logged 1820 days in khux out of 1910 days. Kinda crazy. Crazier I’ve never spent money on khux either lol the only “money” gone into it was one time my mom gave me a google play store gift card and I used it on my birthday for a VIP xemnas medal which eventually made it to regular pulls anyway but it was nice and a little treat :)
Tumblr media
I’m not a gacha fan, I don’t care for it, so I don’t think I’ll be touching another gacha again. But for kh? This was pretty fucking awesome, even if it sucked a lot sometimes LOL It was worth it for the people I’ve met most of all I think. I would honestly be a completely different person without khux and that’s REALLY insane to think about.

Amgry Kingdom Hearts Theory: Fox in a Box
Hi I’m mad.
I’m mad because of Kingdom Hearts. I’m aLSO MAD BECAUSE I THOUGHT OF THIS THEORY AND IT MAKES SOME(?) SORT OF SENSE.
Caplock rant over, crackpot theory Under The Cut.
Before I actually talk about the theory itself I have to establish a few things that lead me to believe any of this is a plausibility aside from how it’s Kingdom Hearts; and it’s just like though.
.Basis.
First of all, I am running with several theories here which haven’t been outright confirmed, though it’s pretty blatant a few of these things are meant to be implicitly deduced, not downright explained. Whether it’s because Nemura may decide to re-neg on some of these or not is anyone’s guess.
I’m running with the ideas that Ava is The Traitor, Is Darkness, and is also the Disembodied Keyblade Wielder in the final world at the end of Melody of Memory. Also, I feel like I should note that Ava is technically alive/has the chance of becoming a force in later games.
Ava, however, NOT Subject 0. Such an honor belongs to Skuld... For reasons you may already be guessing.
In fact, I’m going to do you a solid. The only game events you need to know in order for this to make sense is the general plot of Union X, The Kingdom Hearts 3, and Melody of Memory. Or even just the general plot of Union X, the end of Kingdom Hearts 3, and the end of Melody of Memory.
In Union X we uncover the general back bone of the theory. When we get through the entirety of the Keyblade story foam we come with the pieces of evidence we really need to back up this theory.
Time Travel works, but with limitations (Tm). Everyone from the Original Keyblade War is saved to the Book of Prophecies all USB style,but this doesn’t stop people from potentially dying. WHEN SOMEONE “DIES”, or more precisely their heart gets destroyed, their body vanishes (in the case of Strelitzia).
WE ALSO know, in the case of Luxu/Braig that bodies outside of this Data world still age. This is why Luxu has apparently hopped multiple hosts, and also why Braig’s body ages when he’s a Nobody.
I also would like to propose another tag-along theory that doesn’t ultimately change what I am about to say; but Braig and Luxu are very much so aware of each other and while Luxu is riding passenger on Xigbar’s consciousness; they are in fact separate people. Xibar/Braig will just do things for Luxu when Luxu asks. It’s not super important, but I think it does add another layer of depth to the role Luxu had since his only job was to observe, and he chose to observe through Braig’s eyes. Braig/Xigbar is entirely at fault for his actions which led him to becoming a Nobody/Nort.
Get it? Got it. Okay. Moving on.
.Schrodinger’s Fox.
The overwhelming problem that is in Union X that isn't in the other games is actual consequences one would normally think of when considering wars: death and permanent injury.
In the span of the series we have seen ONE person die for real, and despite how sad it is; Strelitzia is likely never going to come back. The good news is for everyone playing Union X after KH1-KH3 (ish) is that this sets up the stakes of the game perfectly. The fact she hasn’t miraculously re-appeared due to some Keyblade Miracle really sets the stakes for that time period. When people die; they stay dead in Union X.
This provides the foundation of the problem. The Master of Masters KNOWS a war is going to happen due to the use of No-Name, and the efforts of Luxu passing from body to body in the future. This is also why I believe Braig/Xigbar has agency and isn’t just possessed. Either way, he knows a lot of people, potentially great and revolutionary Keyblade wielders, are going to die.
Whether or not his motivations are noble, just, or even at all reasonable: MoM sets out to try and stop it. By sending Luxu forward to do his observations MoM has a direct lay-line to the future which allow him to make the book of Prophecies... Which, as we all know from playing Union X, act as databases that the participants of the Keyblade war are stored to... Or maybe just their memories? It’s rather unclear.
Basically the people died but their memories were backed up, giving them a potential chance to live on in memory. Just... You know. Literally.
However, this is not just some grand gesture. MoM uses the Foretellers to set up his data world and keep the proverbial fires stoke while Luxu and the Traitor (Ava) confront each other.
This is where a lot of speculating begins. If Ava is that soul in the Final World; then she must have lost her body at some point, right? Well. She did.
MoM, knowing Ava is the traitor and she will inadvertently set of the war herself, travels into time to go and retrieve her body before she totally fades away and stuffs her into a device devoid of time, space, light, dark, and meant to keep her body functioning without perishing. Luxu doesn’t seem to have realized that Ava perished, or hasn’t realized he’s carting around her life support.
Anyway, MoM returns to the past, and he gives the box to Luxu, and tasks him to keep it safe and never to open it. The reason WHY it’s crucial the box is never opened is because Ava’s heart is in the Final World chilling with the people who died in the Keyblade war. If he were to open the box without going to the final world, Ava would actually perish.
Luxu probably suspects that Darkness is Ava, which is true, but that’s not the entire picture. In order to keep Luxu from figuring out too much, MoM makes a backup copy of Ava and names her darkness. This is something he could have easily done in the Data World, since he basically did this to create it. We also see data copies of Kingdom Hearts characters later in the series.
.Scientific Revelation.
Anyway, we jump forward several games. We could stop at Birth By Sleep, but aside from Braig appearing canonically for the first time not much happens here to serve the theory. All we do know is that Luxu and Braig are DEFINITELY rocking the same body by KH2 (not a phrase I ever thought I’d say). At the end of Kingdom Hearts 3 Luxu pulls the other Foretellers out of the Data World from the book of Prophecies.
There has to be a reason for this; and I propose Luxu’s goal was to wait and observe until the ability to bring people back from the dead/ bringing people out of the data world became a possibility they could achieve.
The Xigbar and Repliku fight was the second big fight in the maze, and I gather that Xigbar/Luxu chose to back off then because of Replica Riku’s sacrifice left him speculating something big may have been happening.
And lo and behold, something did. Xion is back and Xion has a heart? Old Xemnas becomes Tera again? ROXAS EXISTS AGAIN AND HAS A HEART? Yeah this has to be the sign he was looking for. He packs up his box, goes to the Keyblade Graveyard and summons/waits.
It is unknown whether or not he knows that Namine is walking around, but at this point he knows what he knows. Sora and Co can now bring people back from basically thin air, even giving life to people who shouldn’t exist, provided they have a vessel.
.”Ava had her own Mission, and she carried it out”.
I would say FAMOUS last words, but these weren’t Luxu’s last words. At least, I don’t think they will be. It seems rather uncharacteristic of Xig/Luxu to let things be, and even if Luxu’s task is done Xigbar lives for chaos. I doubt either of them will be gone.
Anyway, Ava did complete her task. By being duped into becoming the “Traitor” and having her body and heart separated, she was able to take care of the memories in the Final World, where the Fairy God Mother takes Kairi to meet at the end of Melody of memories. It’s unclear if she knows her body is in the waking world stuffed in a box, but I’m going to say she doesn’t, just like Luxu/Xigbar.
.”Like a Seeds of a Dandelion, Let them Fly to the Another World”.
I would like to cycle back to the beginning on this... Why Ava? What makes her so special out of the other Foretellers, barring Luxu? Something must have made her specific for this role, and it may have been Ava’s own good nature that made her the candidate. After all, if any of the other Foretellers took her role, it’s entirely possible that Ava could have quelled any infighting among the Foretellers, especially if one of the more hot-headed Foretellers was put in the box instead.
Another possible theory is that it was a fail-safe. When MoM speaks to Ava he’s not as dramatic as he is with the other Foretellers, so it would not surprise me if there was a large grain of truth to what he said to her. He told her that she was the last chance of hope for Light, but unfortunately that may have lead her into the box. Ava was tricked into being the traitor, but by becoming the traitor, she actually managed to land herself a very safe place. I think that the Master of Masters wanted her to be revived if his plan didn’t pan out. Just to be sure that Light survived.

One Sky [Ch. 1: Land]
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Rating: G
Word Count: 1819
Pairings: RokuNami, RikuNami, RepliNami (see tags)
Summary: Now that Namine has a body again, she has a lot to learn about her new life, herself, and the world.
Read on AO3
Namine had never asked to be given a body, but nobody had asked how she felt about it first.
She’d opened her eyes in Ansem’s lab, realizing that she had eyes to open; she looked down at her hands, her legs, touched her hair and her face. She had a body again. A replica body, at least. The scientists told her that she was one hundred percent human now, or as close as possible to one hundred percent as they could get. The important part was that she was free.
She had sat in silence for most of the ride, but now she looked over at the boy in the driver’s seat of the gummiship that was currently speeding them through the Ocean Between. “...Riku?”
“Yeah?” He didn’t take his eyes off his driving, swerving the ship deftly around an asteroid.
“Where are we going?”
“To Twilight Town. Ansem the Wise wanted you to have the Old Mansion.”
“Me?”
“He said it was a small way to apologize for everything, giving you a home.” Riku looked over at her. “Unless you wanted to go somewhere else?”
Somewhere else? She had nowhere else. The idea of a home was a concept she had never entertained.
“Twilight Town is fine.”
“I’m glad to hear that, since we’re almost there.” Riku tilted his head at the windshield and smiled. “You want to take a look?”
As Namine peeked over his shoulder, the clouds ahead of them were parting to reveal Twilight Town in all its golden glory. From the sky, the buildings were no bigger than matchboxes. Even the clock tower looked like a toy. Despite this, Namine could see familiar places and familiar streets as they descended: the Sunset Terrace, the tram lines, Station Heights. The sights made her chest feel tight, as if something was squeezing her heart.
It made no sense. Namine had only ever visited the virtual Twilight Town; in the real world, she had spent all her time in the mansion as she restored Sora’s memories with DiZ and Riku. She had never known the real Twilight Town, so why did seeing it make her ache like this? The thought was confusing and uncomfortable. She stepped back from the window, not wanting to see anymore.
Riku steered the gummiship over the town and past the woods, finally touching down in a familiar clearing in front of a familiar gate. He helped Namine down from the ship, then turned back to close the door while Namine stood at the gate and looked up. In the sunset light, the shadows of the iron bars fell across her face. Beyond the bars sat the mansion.
It was just as she remembered, as inexorably alone as it had been the last time she’d seen it.
The sound of Riku coming up behind her made her jump. “If you’re set with everything, I’m going to head back to–“
“Wait!” Namine reached out suddenly, pulling Riku’s sleeve. She hadn’t meant to do it, but her body had moved on its own. She cast a look back over her shoulder at the mansion and turned away just as quickly.
She opened her mouth, trying to tell him she was scared, that she didn’t want him to leave just yet, but the right words weren’t coming out of her mouth.
“No...I don’t…” Her breathing was quickening, her hands shaking. She didn’t understand why her body was reacting like this but she couldn’t stop it.
Riku looked down at her. His eyes softened with what looked like understanding. “Come here with me for a minute.” He gently removed her hand from his jacket and led her towards the woods. As they moved away from the mansion, Namine felt herself calming down.
The feeling of sunlight was strange and familiar to her at the same time, a disorienting sense of deja vu. It was the same with the feeling of the wind in her hair, the sound of her footsteps, the sensation of taking a deep breath of air. It all felt lovely, but wrong. She had existed for so long as nothing but a heart, she had forgotten how it felt to be human.
If she had ever been one, that is.
Riku directed her to a sunlight patch of grass and made her sit. He sat down next to her and looked at her with concern. “What’s wrong?”
“I hate this place,” said Namine softly. “I never thought I would come back here.”
Riku’s eyes widened slightly, then narrowed as he pressed his lips together. “I’m sorry, Namine. I never thought–I didn’t realize how you might feel about this. We should have talked it over more before bringing you here.”
“No, it’s ok. I understand. And I’m not mad at Ansem. He was just trying to do the right thing. I don’t hate it completely. It’s not the mansion.
It’s just...” Namine paused, trying to find the right words and settling on one. “...Complicated.”
Riku chuckled softly at that. “That’s for sure.”
"I spent so long being alone, and then being used, but I never really thought it was wrong. I just woke up one day in Castle Oblivion, with no concept of who I was or why I was there. I didn't know anything about the world. When that's all you've known, you'll cling to anything that gives your existence meaning. But that's just what life is for people like me. For Nobodies.
When Sora went to sleep and Ansem–DiZ–brought him to Twilight Town, I was so excited at first. Leaving Castle Oblivion felt like my life was starting over again. But it wasn’t. I was still doing what other people were telling me to do. I couldn’t go anywhere or do what I wanted. I was still a prisoner. And in the end, the last time I was at this mansion...” Namine didn’t have to continue. She and Riku both knew how it had ended, with DiZ dragging her away in a corridor of darkness even as Roxas was reaching for her.
“Even then, I didn't think much of it until I returned to Kairi's heart. I felt through her heart how she loved everybody around her so purely, and felt how that love was returned. It made me realize...I didn't know what that was like. Until I met Sora, I didn't know what it was like to have someone care for me. Well, Sora and one other..."
Namine's voice trailed off as the memory of another boy surfaced. A face she'd only known for a short time, but still tugged at her heart whenever she thought of him.
“Your replica…”
Riku turned his face away. “He’s gone.”
Namine let out a breath. “I thought so.” Disappointed, but not surprised.
“Namine…I didn’t want to tell you, but...the reason he’s gone…” Namine had never heard Riku sound so hesitant before. “The truth is, he had a chance to take a body for himself. But he gave it up for you. He said you needed it more.”
It was difficult to keep her face blank at that, so she turned her head away.
“I think he was happy with that though,” Riku continued. “It was his choice.”
His choice, huh? Namine laughed sadly. “Of course it was. I guess he never thought about my choices.” She leaned back and looked up at the canopy of rustling leaves overhead. “I wanted to see him again, just once. Just to say thank you.” Dust motes were dancing in the shafts of warm afternoon sunlight that slanted through the branches. “And to say ‘I’m sorry.’”
“I’m sure he knows.”
Namine shook her head and smiled, her eyes closed against the sunlight. “Maybe he does. But it’s not the same as if I’d said it to him, right? Maybe it’s selfish of me, but I wanted to say it properly. I wanted to look into his eyes and know that he heard me, and see that he’d forgiven me for what I did.” Her voice trailed off as she opened her eyes again. The sunlight was dazzling. She was suddenly aware, with a startling sharpness, of every blade of grass brushing against her skin, the crisp bite of the breeze on her neck, and rush of forest sounds that was swelling all around her.
“I don’t know why I’m here, Riku.”
The forest fell silent.
“I don’t think any of us do,” said Riku, leaning back on his hands. “When I was a kid on the Destiny Islands, I was convinced that I was meant for a life of adventure. I wanted nothing more than to leave that tiny island, and see all the other worlds for myself.” He laughed ruefully. “I certainly got my wish. But I also wonder sometimes if just spending those years on that quiet island with Sora and Kairi, having fun together and growing up...might not have been so bad either.” His bright green eyes met her own with a reassuring smile. “None of us know what we’re doing here, Namine. Too often we wish for what we don’t have, only to realize we never wanted it once we get it. We’re all messed up in one way or another. But that doesn’t mean you have to let that get in the way of being happy.”
Namine hid the smile that twisted her lips. It had been a long time since she thought she was allowed to be happy, but Riku had said it so matter-of-factly that it almost made her want to laugh. She didn’t know if she believed him yet, but knew that he meant it sincerely, so she didn’t argue. She simply leaned back and closed her eyes again, letting the sunlight soak into her skin.
“It certainly is a beautiful day.”
~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Riku walked her back to the mansion. Namine put a hand on the gate. The metal was warm to the touch, radiating the heat of the afternoon sun. Ahead of her, the mansion sat still and cavernous and empty. She turned back to look at Riku.
“What will I do tomorrow?”
Riku smiled. “That’s up to you.”
But without Organization XIII, without DiZ, without Sora...who was she? Namine didn’t have an answer. In the light of the setting sun, all she knew was that she dreaded the moment she went inside and shut the gate behind her. Alone again, and this time, utterly without purpose.
Darkness might have been preferable.
But they hadn’t given her that choice. And now that she was here, Namine had to admit that deep in her heart, she knew darkness was never what she would have wanted. She had been resigned to her fate, but had never wanted it. In this world without darkness though, everything was different. This was her life starting over, and this time she was free.
Namine took a deep breath, and opened the gate.

Presenting a lovely commission I recently received from @wingbladeweaver1357 of Naminé and Kairi from my Memories of You fanfic where they’re twin sisters! I’m absolutely in love with it!
Decided to write up a quick snippet to go along with it as well that may or may not show up in the future of Memories of You itself! Enjoy!
-----------------------------
Memories of You:  Naminé and Kairi
Word Count: 1,383
-----------------------------
"Knock, knock," Kairi called. "Dinner is served."
Kairi backed into Naminé's room with her hands preoccupied with a tray of grilled meat and curry rice. Naminé sat at her desk, lost in her own world as a zest of inspiration compelled her to look over her work with a great amount of scrutiny as she scribbled into her sketchbook.
"Thank you," Naminé replied, her eyes unmoving. "Smells great. On the bed is fine."
Kairi paused. Did she hear right? For the first time in weeks, Naminé’s voice didn't sound like it was desolate of all life and energy. "So, I suppose asking you to come downstairs and eat at the table with us like a normal family for once is out of the question?"
"What was that?" Naminé asked, not tearing her eyes away from her drawing.
"Never mind," Kairi said tiredly, complying with her sister's earlier request and set her dinner on the mattress. "Just promise me you'll at least touch your dinner this time?"
"Don't worry, I will. And I'll be at breakfast in the morning. Promise," Naminé assured her offhandedly. Kairi couldn’t claim to be convinced. She had heard it a million times before. "If I don't show up, I'll do your chores for a month."
"Deal. I’ll hold you to that, you know.”
Before leaving, she stole a stealthy glance at Naminé and took note of her seemingly more animated posture. It was far from the first time she had seen her sister absorbed in her own world. But this time, something seemed different; whether it was the way her pencil scraped against the paper sharply, or the way she chewed her lip, or the slightest bounce etched in each of Naminé's movements. It was a subtle something that only a sister of sixteen years could pinpoint.
Kairi peered over Naminé's shoulder to get a glimpse at whatever kind of artistic spectacle was in the works. "Soooo, whatcha drawin'?"
"H-Hey! Do you mind?" Naminé was quick to press her sketchbook against her chest. "You know I don't like when people look."
Kairi raised her hands in a show of no ill will. "Sorry, are my unrefined commoner eyes tainting your latest masterpiece?"
"Why, yes. Yes, they are. Glad you understand."
Kairi scoffed. "No need to get uppity. I was just curious because you seem a bit more excited than usual."
"Excited? What do you mean by excited?" Naminé chuckled nervously. "I'm not excited. Who's excited? Are you excited? Can I not just be immersed into the wonderful world of art without arousing baseless accusations of this so-called excitement?"
Kairi snickered at the transparent façade. "Subtle."
Naminé frowned. "Don't you think your food is getting cold or something?"
"Funny, I was just about to say the same thing to you." Kairi giggled at the dirty look from her sister and headed for the door. "Fine. I can take a hint. I'll be downstairs if you need anything."
When Kairi turned towards the door, Naminé gave a look of gratitude and returned her focus to her sketchbook. However, when Naminé was least expecting it, her sketchbook was quickly swiped from her work station. With eyes on the brink of popping out of her skull, Naminé looked over to find Kairi making a mad dash towards her own bedroom with a most evil cackle trailing behind her.
“Kairi!” Naminé cried, immediately rushing out of her room to give chase.
“Sorry, little sister, but I couldn’t resist,” Kairi called, her eyes running over her sister’s sketch as she sped walked down the hall. It was an impressively constructed piece of Roxas with an insurmountable amount of attention to detail resulting in an insanely accurate depiction of the boy in question. “Aha! Just as I suspected.”
“Kairi,” Naminé shouted, her voice coming off more whiny than anything. As Naminé chased after her sister, she couldn’t help but remember when Roxas took her most embarrassing doodles of hers when she was little, teasing her all the while. What was with these two and their incessant need to humiliate her? “Give that back!”
“But this is so good,” Kairi said as she entered her room. Naminé hurried inside soon after and sprinted towards her sister with the intent of tackling her to her bed, but Kairi simply raised a hand to catch Naminé’s face, ignoring her muffled moans and whines as she pathetically reached for her sketchbook. “No wonder you were so focused. It’s like... almost a photograph.”
“Thank you very much. Now hand it over.”
Kairi gave it one last look, a wide smile spreading, before handing it back to Naminé. The bespectacled girl held it close to her chest protectively and adjusted her glasses.
“Look, I know I might look like a bit of a weirdo,” Naminé started, “but it really was just an excuse to practice portraits. That’s all.”
“Mmm hmmmm,” Kairi mummed in disbelief. “If that’s the case, why choose Roxas?”
“Because, uh...” Naminé stumbled. “I-I like his hair?”
It wasn’t a lie, anyway.
Kairi smirked, shaking her head as she set her hands on her hips. “Little sister. Have you not learned your lesson that your lies hold no weight over me, your true evil overlord?” She gradually began to speak in a dramatic tone.
 “Would you please stop calling me your little sister? We’re only minutes apart.”
Kairi grabbed Naminé by the shoulders and shook her. “Your meager attempts at diverging the topic of our current discussion do not sway me, woman! I know thine heart hath a penchant for the boy who hails by the name of Roxas and your denies are futile!”
“And stop talking like that. It’s starting to freak me out.”
“Just admit it,” Kairi said, her voice returning to normal. “I’ve admitted to you about how I feel about Sora. The least you can do is return the favor. Don’t you trust me?”
Naminé eyed her up and down with scrutiny. “Do you really want me to answer that question?”
Kairi rolled her eyes. “Do you like Roxas? Yes or no?”
Naminé bit her lip as her eyes moved all over Kairi’s room in an attempt to avoid that gleam of anticipation of hers. “I... maybe, okay? Maybe. Now, will you leave me alone?”
Naminé hurried towards the door, but Kairi read her like a book and swiftly stepped in front of her as she blocked her exit. “So, you admit it!”
“I said maybe.”
“Which basically means you want to bear his children!”
Naminé felt a blush sneak up on her at the accusation. “W-What...?”
Kairi snaked one of her arms around Naminé’s shoulders. “Hee hee! You wanna know what I think?” she asked, her voice returning to normal.
“After that comment you just made, not particularly.”
“I think you should give it to Roxas as a gift.”
“Kairi,” Naminé said plainly.
“I’m serious. You know how much he loves your art. I’m telling you, he’d fall head over heels for you!”
“T-That’s not really the point,” Naminé said, her eyes running over her sketch. “Isn’t it kind of creepy? Drawing somebody without their permission?”
“Maybe if you didn’t know the person, but we’re talking about your friend, remember? Our friend. A friend who adores everything of yours he’s laid his eyes on. Also, helloooo? His birthday is coming up next week. The time is now!”
Naminé’s look of uncertainty didn’t waver much, her eyes repeatedly switching from her sketch to her sister’s hopeful eyes. “So, you’re saying I wouldn’t look like a creep if I gave this to him?”
“Not at all! You should give Roxas more credit. He’s not some judgemental jerkface, and you know this. He’d be thrilled. Just have a little bit of courage and I’m sure it’ll all work out.”
Naminé still looked unsure.
“How about this,” Kairi continued. “I’ll be right there beside you when you give it to him. If you ever get discouraged, I’ll be right there to nudge you in the right direction.”
“I don’t know about this, Kairi...” Naminé whispered, lifting her sketchbook over the bottom half of her face to hide her quivering lips. “Are you sure this is a good idea?”
Realizing that Naminé was beginning to warm up to the idea, Kairi noticeably brightened and clenched her fists.
“I’m positive!”

KHOC WEEK~Day 2
Bonds of the Heart/Ties That Bind
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
@khoc-week this one is gonna be a long one sorry bout that!
I’m going to try it kinda like most to least? but leave out some characters she does get close with for the sake of time >~> ANYHOW
#1 being Cleo Maiyu: Her Mama
“Tell them to sort it into this months invoices then mail out th-“
*...* “No I promised starlight i’d spend the day with her & you already took up all of our morning.”
*click* “Where to next Audri?”
“Book house mama!”
“It’s a store but you were close..”
Tumblr media
•Cleo, even though it’s not her ideal career, worked at a desk job that payed well in order to support the little family they formed. Not saying that’s all she did for Audri, not at all! If she was needed by Audri, Cleo would drop everything to tend to her. She would accept every gift and proudly wear it or hang it up for everyone to see, giving her gifts & praise to try to make sure she knows she’s loved very much.
Audri’s health & safety is her top priority & willing to do anything to ensure it, wither it be a stern talk or a fist fight. That being said when Audri is sick even if it’s not major, won’t be allowed to lift even a finger in fear of making it worse & losing her.
While growing up Audri understood that work was important & usally left her to work when she worked from home but would stop in to drop off small gifts she made, coffee, or even a peaceful rest with the help of her colourful friends before their home fell & Audri vanished.
#2- Zeke Maiyu: Her Uncle ZeZe
“You sure you want to use this polish Dri? There’s prettier colours-“
“SHh NU! You love love green so its one of the prettiest colours too!!”
Tumblr media
In the early years Audri was home schooled due to all the possible illnesses she could get in public schools & private school being to expensive. So since he worked completely from home, Zeke became her teacher during the weekdays & taught her things benifeical to her like reading, writing, cooking, health, as well as things that interested her like astrology & flowers.
They would have days where they would leave home to learn outside or just to play. Audri would alway wonder out of eyesight, (which was easy with technically one eye on you)(sorry not sorry) but never to hard to find again if you followed her giggles or her friends.
(Note:Zeke & Cleo are not mine, they belong to a close friend of mine)
Isa/Saïx
“I-Isa! Lea took off with Prof.Hoots again!”
“Don’t worry Audri, I’ll bring the Professer back & try to knock some sense into that dummy before your mother does..”
Tumblr media
•The days she was allowed outside, she’d either go to the castle or look for her older friends who honestly play more of an older sibling role in Audri’s life, with Isa taking a more caring & mature sibling place, while Lea takes a teasing/bully but still fun & kind sibling role.
She bonded with Isa the quickest due to their love of the night, as well as to her, He was more comforting to be around since his personality is something she’s grown up with compared to her other ‘big brother’ Lea, who is much louder & competive. Not to say she dislikes his loud personality, just odd when it’s not her being the only extrovert anymore.
•Months after the fall Saïx would be the one to find her at the doors of Castle Oblivion with a large scar over her front & her once sparkling eyes dulled. Her body somehow survived & became a nobody.
She’d be seen at the start clinging to the back his coat as he was the first she saw & most familiar to her memory wise at the time. Although not an official member, she was given a new name, Aidrux & once more independent, missions.
Even though he became colder over time, he still took his brotherly role seriously with what little hearts he had over the years, just as she once more memories came back would care & help him as much as she was able. She’d stay by his side more once Axel started to stray away from them for Roxas & Xion.
Ienzo/Zexion
Ahh the extrovert adopts the introvert~ good quality content with that right there ANyway
“-And then we can make a super big flower like the book with the bean stalk and we’ll touch the stars!”
“...that’s not scientifically plausible Dri”
“Anything is possible when it’s you & me!!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“..Still think we could make that gaint flower?”
“Thought it ‘wasn’t plausible’. Remember?”
“With you? ‘Anything is possible’ Dear”
“...Dork~.”
•With the tendency to explore unsupervised, it would’ve been only a matter of time before these two would meet. despite the tough shell Ienzo had, instead of breaking it with trying to make him talk, she waited for him to hatch on his own accord, by bringing small books or art supplies to work on silently with a few comments here & there. She knew forcing him to talk would only make it harder.
In time he did start talking although not by much, but enough to hold a conversation which made Audri practically shine when she heard him talk. The small talks the had honestly funny if you were able to hear them, from plans of the future to multi-coloured animals, they’ve talked about it all almost.
•Zexion was a big change to Aidrux once she remembered, but that didn’t mean she didn’t try over the years. Whether it be old books or the small remark there, she tried & forunatly so did he. With illusions of flower fields & cheeky statements, they became close again, well as close as you could get with no hearts anyway.
•Once whole again they weren’t really sure what to do with the sudden massive rush of emotions that filled them when they met up again, it scared both of them to the point they avoided one another for a while till that feeling became unbearable.
They can’t think of the right word to label their relationship but they know they care about eachother differently compared to the others, but not quite love..
But maybe in time it will.
Xemnas
•Oddly enough? He felt kinda safe to her even after she remembered he was the reason she was nobody. He didn’t mind her presence really, she was useful & benifited the Orginzation.
But, something remembered her, and not from when he was an apprentice no. Something before that, but what?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As for people she dislikes/hates/uncomfortable with?
•As a child she never felt completely comfortable with Braig, there were the rare times she felt okay but never completely. To this day she still isn’t sure why, but she’ll get an idea why soon.
•During KH2 hands down for a time, H A T E D Sora, as far as she knew, he was trying to stop them from getting their hearts back, stopping her from being with her family. (Id be mad to if banana shoes over here started basically destroying years of planning/ work) She knows the truth now, but being near him all alone still sparks some negative feelings.
•As childish as it is, any man with yellow eyes. She doesn’t remember completely how she got to RG but knows that a male with those eyes took her there & feeling scared.
that’s all I can think of atm but pretty proud of how much I did today! See y’all tomorrow
I have to admit tho out of Lea & Isa, I’ve always liked Lea more so its a little funny how little he’s mentioned lol.

For the ask meme, can you do #17 and rikunami?
Thank you for the ask, anon!
See this post for the full list!
I admit that I was a little nervous since I’d never written RikuNami before, but they are so fun to write! Hope you enjoy :)
Here’s #17, A Kiss to Distract
——————————————————————————————–
After helping the Radiant Garden Restoration Committee unlock more data from Cid’s computer, Riku had needed a breather. A quick detour before he headed back to the Land of Departure, nothing else. His heart led him to the same place it always had, and for the same reason. Next he knew, the warm sun and green forests that cradled Twilight Town greeted him on his descent.
For the first time, it hadn’t been Namine who greeted him off of the gummi ship, but Hayner, Pence and Olette who were eager to put him to work.
So much for a breather.
The “work”, turned out, involved throwing Namine a party for her new birthday, the day that her heart was returned to her. Of course, the day had been the anniversary of many things, but they’d wanted to focus on the positive like the good friends they were.
The others had already been busy getting all of the decorations, and the three before him were in charge of handling all of the food. With smiles all-too suspicious, they’d volunteered him to keep Namine company for the next few hours while everyone else set up, and he’d agreed to the task almost embarrassingly quickly. For one, he’d have done anything to avoid being in a small space with several people again. And two, he’d just…wanted to see her. She’d been his whole reason for visiting the quaint town in the first place.
Hayner had told him to have her back by six o’clock, but his tone had reflected that of a protective sibling as much as an eager party-planner.
He found her sipping tea alone outside of a cafe. Time always seemed to slow the moment her eyes found him, and this was no different.
“Riku!” She stood and faced him. Neither of them were fully comfortable initiating or participating in things like hugs, but he felt content just being in her company. “Xion told me they had a surprise for me today, but I wasn’t expecting something this great,” she smiled.
A lump formed in his throat, and something between a groan and a cough escaped. “Yeah,” he gave her a subdued smile, which he knew paled in comparison to the one he was receiving, “guess I’ll try not to disappoint.”
“Never,” she gestured down the street. “Join me for a walk?”
Yes, a walk. Anywhere that wasn’t near the usual spot. Or a gift store. Or anywhere that sells food. Shouldn’t be too hard.
As he scaled up his singular task in his head, he realized she was still standing a few paces ahead of him and waiting for an answer.
“Uh, yes,” he said and hastily joined her side.
He’d never get tired of exploring Twilight Town. The real place was so much more lively than what Ansem the Wise had generated in his computer. Though his task of keeping her oblivious made it harder to just enjoy the colors of the town.
When the gang had said they’d be around town gathering supplies, they hadn’t been kidding. Whether it was Axel and Isa with a giant banner that said “HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NAMINE”, Roxas and Xion trying party hats on each other, or Hayner and Olette picking out cupcakes, there had been spoilers around almost every corner. He swore they could teleport too. With how many times he had to quickly herd Namine out of view, he was surprised she never caught on. One thing he knew: he had to get her out of the main portion town.
A brief train ride brought them to the appropriately named Sunset Terrace, and Riku immediately appreciated the lack of familiar faces.
“So,” he said as he walked, “it’s been a year since you moved here. How do you like it?”
“It feels like a home,” she folded her hands in front of her chest. “Thanks to the people here, the happy memories here far outweigh the sad ones.”
The sad memories, in which she was essentially held hostage for a second time, all while being belittled and dehumanized. Most of those memories he’d been a bystander for, and he wondered if being around him now caused her any pain by association. It was a miracle that she granted him any of her time at all. Perhaps returning to his rightful form again helped make their friendship possible, or perhaps she was just that kind.
Namine seemed to follow his thoughts. “You know,” she said, “with my time in the mansion, some parts were painful, but some were happy too.”
“Really?”
“Mhmm,” she nodded, “Atleast I wasn’t alone.”
He chuckled, “I would’ve hardly considered myself company.”
“You were struggling, but you were there.” She giggled, “In a way, we were both these strange beings overwhelmed with guilt, yet still determined to set things right.” She leaned and brushed a hand over his arm as she walked. “Thank you, Riku.”
He searched himself for reasons that he could possibly deserve a ‘thank you’, but came up empty. Why was he making this day about himself, anyways? And why was he making her recall painful memories? She certainly didn’t look unhappy, but he wanted her to remember the day - remember his company - fondly.
“Here, come with me.” Out of nowhere, she grabbed his hand and began running up Sunset Hill, turning him into a stumbling mess after her.
 He’d been to the top of the hill before, but now he could fully take in the view. The town itself seemed to end while the rest of the world stretched out in an endless green forest.
“What do you think of the view?” She asked.
“It’s nice.” He kept the strong words to describe it, and even stronger words to describe how she looked, to himself. “I haven’t been here since-” he caught himself, hating that he seemed to fail at lighthearted conversation.
“Since you let me go,” she smiled.
“You’re giving me too much credit,” he chuckled. “It was the least I could’ve done.”
A commotion down the hill in the marketplace caught Riku’s attention. From where he stood, he could see that it was Pence struggling to carry a giant cake. He rolled his eyes, grateful that Namine’s back was turned to it. He played it cool and refrained from staring too long. It wasn’t difficult to keep his attention on her anyways.
Despite his efforts, the conversation kept coming back to their memories in Twilight Town. Maybe leaning into the topic would be better than forcing small talk.
“It was a two-way street in the mansion, you know,” he said. “You helped me too.”
“I helped restore Sora’s memories,” she muttered, “but-”
“I don’t mean that,” he interrupted. “I thought I was…cursed. But when I saw you use your powers to restore Sora’s memories, it made me want to do more than just conquer the Darkness. It - you - inspired me to walk the road to dawn, even if it took a while,” He looked straight into her light blue eyes. “So, thank you, Namine.”
She hung her mouth open, as if she wanted to respond, but settled on one of her humble smiles.
“And on a less complicated level,” he added, “you’ve been there for me as a friend ever since,” he hung on the last word and left the sentence unfinished, both unable to and knowing she wouldn’t need him to.
Being separated from his best friends weighed on him heavily over the past year. Even though he knew he and Kairi were working together to save Sora, and he couldn’t imagine what kind of loneliness she was going through, the events of a year ago had left him with no one to confide in.
Well, no one but the woman in front of him.
Her cheeks reddened, and her eyes reflected a deep empathy. If anyone knew how badly one needed friends, it was her. “It’s the least I could do.”
He’d thought his connection to Namine had only been through some combination of Kairi or his replica, but that delusion shattered the moment she’d placed her hand in his. In the tiny contact, there had been neither a familiar spark of an existing friendship, nor a drive to protect solely out of obligation.
No, there had been something more. He found himself coming to her for seemingly no reason, and she always made time for him amidst her new found family. Every strong face and misleading “I’m fine” from him had fallen apart under her gentle gaze. The more he thought of her, the more that the word “friend” failed to fully describe who she was to him.
A loud yelp echoed from where Pence was, and Riku didn’t have to look to know his attempt to carry too much had failed. An earsplitting clatter followed, along with many more gasps.
Unfortunately, Namine hadn’t resisted the temptation to look. As she began turning around, time slowed, and Riku panicked internally. He had one job - don’t spoil the surprise for Namine - and her seeing Pence dropping a birthday cake was probably considered a mission failure. His mind ran through several excuses he could tell her, but none were convincing.
There was one thing he could do to keep her focused on him; something he might just be mad enough to do. Before he could talk himself out of it, he mustered up all of the courage he possessed and took her face within his hands. This new touch along with the surprised look she was giving him was enough to turn his stomach into nothing but nerves, but there was no going back.
Next he knew, his lips were on hers in the gentlest, most inexperienced of kisses. Her lips were just as soft and warm as her heart, and he wished he could stop time to cherish it a little longer. Her hands came up to brush over his own and settle on his arms.
Kissing her was less like fireworks and more like finally breaching a surface he never knew existed. Everything, from breathing to smiling to jumping to crying, felt waves easier.
When he pulled away, her eyes stayed closed a moment longer before fluttering open.
“Riku…”
The way she breathed his name so fondly made him want to lean back in for more, but he waited. Waited for her to move first. To say something else.
Only she didn’t. She remained still, looking up at him with both surprise and tenderness.
Guilt quickly pulled him back under the surface. He meant every second of kissing her, but how could he fumble something so earnest on a distraction? Had it only been a distraction, or was the distraction just an excuse to kiss her? Whatever it was, it had worked on both of them, because the commotion down the hill was the furthest thing from their minds now.
“I’m sorry,” his hands fell from her face, to her shoulders, to her arms. Even her hands felt far more than he deserved to touch. “That was…selfish of me.”
Her hands caught his wrist as he tried to back away. When he dared to meet her eyes again, her expression hadn’t changed. She shook her head. “You deserve to be a little selfish sometimes.”
As she stepped closer, the distant clock tower chimed to signal half-an-hour until six. Walking back now would barely make them punctual, but hopefully Pence’s accident had afforded them a little more time.
It was then that Riku decided making her a little late to her own surprise party was worth taking the time to kiss her properly.
—————————————————————————
Thank you for reading! If I recall correctly, the Kingdom Hearts character files revealed that Namine goes to live with the Twilight Town gang after the events of KH3, which I thought was super sweet and everything she deserves. The sea-salt family just keeps growing, and I loved the idea of Namine joining their little found family. It was also really fun to think of all the things Riku admires about Namine, and in what circumstance he’d kiss her as a distraction.
This was my first RikuNami fic, so I hope you all enjoyed it:)

Evening’s Repose (SoKai Week 2020 Day 7: Down the Road)
Tumblr media
Greetings readers and fellow SoKai fans!  It is I, the Mad Doctor, here participating in SoKai Week for the very first time!  For my contribution, here’s a little post-canon fluffy and romantic piece starring our favorite couple.  Enjoy!
________________________________________________________________
Destiny Islands
The sun was setting on the Destiny Islands bringing another day to a close.  As the sky grew darker, two weary Keyblade Wielders made their way to one of their houses.
“Whew!  Is it just me, Kairi, or are these Mark of Mastery training sessions getting tougher?” Sora asked his girlfriend as they walked hand in hand toward her house.
“Aww.  Does the lazy bum think the Masters should ease up on us?” teased Kairi.
Sora folded his arms and pouted.  “No.  I was just asking if you were thinking the same thing.  Is it too much to want a straight answer?”
Kairi giggled as she ruffled her boyfriend’s spiky hair.  “Sorry. You’re just so fun to tease and you look so cute when get all pouty.”
In spite of the teasing, Sora managed to smile. ‘You’re lucky I love you more than anything because no one else would be able to get away with that.’
“As for your straight answer, I think you’re right. They do seem to be getting harder and I’m sure we’re not the only ones who are feeling that.  Roxas, Xion and the others would probably agree with you. But it’s all necessary because the Masters want to make full-fledged Keyblade Masters out of all of us” said the Princess of Heart.
“Yeah, I know.  And once every Keyblade-wielding Guardian of Light is at the rank of Master, we’ll all be better prepared for the next time the worlds are in trouble,” said Sora.  ‘Which hopefully won’t be for a very long time.’
“Well, I’m just glad that when we take the Mark of Mastery, it’ll be a more regular kind,” said Kairi.
“Yeah.  I still remember the looks on Terra and Aqua’s faces when they learned what Master Yen Sid put me and Riku through for our first exam.  Hard to believe all they needed to do for theirs was bat around some balls of light and then face off against each other,” said Sora.
“I’m especially glad that the next time won’t involve going around another realm to gain a power that’s more trouble than it’s worth,” said Kairi with a touch of bitterness in her voice.
Sora sighed.  “Hard to let that go even after all this time, huh?”
“I’m sorry, Sora.   But I can’t help it.  I know you and Riku needed the Power of Waking so you could save everybody who needed to be saved before our fight with Xehanort.  But I still wish Master Yen Sid or even Mickey would have told you that there was a way it wasn’t supposed to be used,” said Kairi hanging her head a little.  ‘Especially since you wouldn’t have had to misuse it had I been a better Keyblade wielder back then.’
Sora’s heart broke at the sight of her in that state. He knew, even though Kairi hadn’t said anything, part of her would always bear some responsibility for his vanishing from the world for a time.  And though he never regretted paying that price, he would regret the anguish it had caused his friends especially her.
With a gentle smile, Sora put his arm around his beloved.  “Hey, things are different now.  We’re not in desperate times anymore so we can all properly prepare.  And that means that whenever there’s a new power to learn, we’ll all know how to use it right.  The Masters promised that from now on, we’ll all be fully warned of any consequences.”
“I know they did.  But let’s be honest, Sora.  Even if you had known the consequences then, you’d have done it anyway, wouldn’t you?” asked Kairi.
“Considering the other options were letting Xehanort have his way or letting your heart remain split and scattered, it was no choice at all.  But remember, Kairi, it wasn’t even the slightest bit your fault.  The Master of Masters was playing all of us, even Xehanort, back then.  I still can’t believe how it was all set it up so I would misuse the Power of Waking and end up where he was so he could use me for his own plans.  But that’s all behind us now so let’s not dwell on it.  It really doesn’t do any of us any good. Just remember what we realized the day it was all over, and we were finally together again for good,” said Sora.
Kairi smiled.  “Every day that we’re together, from now on, is a gift.”
“Exactly.  So, let’s keep enjoying these gifts and not let the darkness of the past spoil them,” said Sora returning her smile.
“When did you get so wise?” asked Kairi.
“Hey, with all the worlds I’ve been to, it was bound to happen sooner or later,” said Sora as Kairi laughed causing Sora’s heart to soar.  ‘There she is.  There’s my happy girlfriend.’
They had been so wrapped in their conversation that they were surprised when they reached the front door of Kairi’s house.  Taking out her housekey, she unlocked the door and opened it up.
“Mom?  Dad? I’m home!” she called into her house. But she received no answer in response.
“Guess they’re not home yet.  Oh right!  They did say they were going to be working late today.  Dad had a long meeting with the Island councillors and Mom had a staff meeting at her clinic after they closed up,” said Kairi.
A sly smile came to her face as she turned to Sora. “Looks like we have the place to ourselves.  That is, unless you have to get home right now,” she said hoping that wasn’t the case at all.
Sora smiled as he caught onto his girlfriend’s train of thought.  “Nope. My parents aren’t expecting me back at any specific time.”
“Good.  Because since we’ve had a very tiring day and it’s such a nice evening, I was hoping we could…,” said Kairi.
“Have a little hammock time?  I guess we could do that.  Hopefully with some Kairi Cuddles?” asked Sora hopefully.
Kairi chuckled.  “Only if you’re willing to return them with some Sora Snuggles,” she said as she lightly tapped Sora on the nose with her finger causing him to laugh.
“You’ve got yourself a deal,” said Sora.
Kairi locked up her front door and then turned back to Sora.  “Well then, my valiant knight, would you care to escort this Princess of Heart to the backyard?” asked Kairi as she held out her hand.
“It would be my honor, my dear princess,” said Sora as he took her hand and the two of them made their way to the side of the house.
After entering Kairi’s backyard through the side gate, they approached what had become one of their favorite things since becoming a couple: a hammock strung between two large palm trees.  It was just the right size for two people to lie in.
Sora was the first to go in.  After maneuvering around for a few moments and finding a comfortable position, he turned to Kairi with a smile and asked, “Care to join me?”
Laughing, she took him up on his offer and climbed in, taking care not to disrupt the balance of the hammock.  She snuggled up to Sora’s right side and laid her head on his shoulder as he wrapped his arm around her.
Sora let out a happy sigh.  “You know, as enjoyable as this is, I have to admit that this doesn’t make it any easier.”
Kairi looked up to him in confusion.  “What do you mean?  What doesn’t get any easier?”
Sora gave her a tender smile as he stroked her cheek.  “Parting from you every night.”
Kairi giggled for a moment before letting out a happy sigh of her own.  Ever since the defeat of the Master of Masters, Sora had finally made good on his promise that they’d be together every day.
But she had to agree that one of the hardest parts of their relationship was having to say goodbye to him at the end of the day.  And as the days went on and their relationship progressed, it was getting harder.  While they still had their Gummi Phones and could talk at any time, it wasn’t truly the same as genuinely being with each other in person.
“I know it is.  But we just have to be patient, Sora.  One day, parting at the end of the day will be something we never have to do again,” said Kairi.
Sora smiled at the thought of that.  They had often talked about what their future would hold.  Seeing more worlds, becoming Keyblade Masters, getting married, raising a family of their own, growing old together; these were among the highest hopes they shared for the future.
While some would believe they were too young to be considering such things, Sora and Kairi knew that after everything they had been through, they could not take one single moment for granted.
“You’re right, Kai,” said Sora.
“Aren’t I always?”
“Hmm.  No.”
“Say that again?” asked Kairi giving Sora an annoyed look causing him to laugh.
“What?  I can’t do a little teasing every now and then?” asked Sora.
“Nope.  There’s can be only one teaser in this couple and that happens to be me,” said Kairi matter-of-factly.
“Just who made up that rule?” asked Sora.
“I did.  I do happen to be a princess and the daughter of the mayor in case you’ve forgotten,” said Kairi in a tone of mock smugness.
“I don’t think you actually have that kind of power,” said Sora going along with the joke.
“I do so!” Kairi shot back.
The two of them stared at each other before bursting into laughter.  They continued to laugh until they both let out sighs of contentment.
“When did I last tell you that I love you?” asked Sora.
“You never really have to, Sora.  You do such a good job of showing it without having to say it.  I always can see it in every action, every look and every smile you show me.”
Sora gave one of his trademark grins that Kairi loved so much.  “Well, even if I’m doing that good a job, I hope you wouldn’t object to hearing it out loud anyway.”
“Not at all.”
“Well then, I love you, Kairi, with all my heart and I always will.”
“And I love you, Sora, more than anything in all the worlds.”
The two of them gazed up at the sky.  They said nothing else.  Nothing more was needed anyway for now.
After a while, Sora let out a yawn.  “Well, Kai, I think it’s time I went home.”
No response came from her.
“Kai?” asked Sora craning his head to look at her. Much to his surprise, Kairi had fallen asleep.
Sora was torn on what to do.  He knew he should be heading for home right about now. But the day had been so exhausting, and he didn’t want to disturb her, not with her sleeping so peacefully.
As usual, he put Kairi first.
Shaking his head with a smile, he sighed resignedly. ‘Looks like we don’t have to say goodbye tonight after all.’
He let out a chuckle.  ‘Your dad is probably going to let me have it in the morning.  But it’ll be worth it.  You are worth everything.’
Sora leaned in and placed a gentle kiss to Kairi’s temple.  His heart soared as her mouth turned up into a smile.
“Good night, Kairi,” said Sora as he closed his eyes just as the stars came out and allowed the lights of the hearts of the denizens of many worlds to shine down on the happy couple.
________________________________________________________________
Much later, on the other side of the house, a tall thin man dressed in an official-looking clothing and carrying a briefcase trudged up the pathway to the front door.  He was balding with graying black hair and a moustache with green eyes. It was Parker, the mayor of Destiny Islands and Kairi’s adoptive father.
‘These budget meetings are always so long and tough.  Thank goodness we managed to find a solution that hopefully will be satisfactory to everyone,’ he thought as he let out a big sigh.
Upon finally reaching the front door, Parker unlocked it and stepped inside.  After taking off his coat and shoes and putting them into the front closet, he noticed that there were no lights on in his home.
“Dorothy?  Kairi?” he asked.  But there was no answer from either his wife or his daughter.  Then he realized something
‘Maybe they’ve already gone to bed.  Dorothy did say that she was staying late at the clinic for a staff meeting so I wouldn’t be surprised if she did just that when she got home.  Same with Kairi.  She did say that those training sessions they’ve been having at the Land of Departure were getting harder.  They’re both probably so tired, even I couldn’t wake them up.’
Parker let out a loud yawn.  ‘I feel like doing the same.  But maybe I’ll have a little something to eat before I turn in.’
The mayor made his way through the house and into the kitchen.  He was about to head for the refrigerator and see what was in it when something else caught his eye.  He headed over to a window that looked out into the backyard and gazed through it.
There, laying in the hammock and swaying gently in the island breeze, were Sora and Kairi.  They were sleeping with Sora’s arm around Kairi and her head resting on his shoulder.  Both had content smiles on their faces.
Parker continued to gaze at the sleeping couple. He barely heard a voice call out from the foyer, “I’m home!”
From behind Parker, a woman dressed in veterinary clothing entered the kitchen.  She had blonde hair, brown eyes and was wearing glasses.  It was Parker’s wife and Kairi’s adoptive mother, Dorothy.
“Oh Parker, you’re home.  Thought I’d be the one to get home before you did.  Guess our meeting at the clinic ran a little longer than yours.  How did it go by the way?” she asked.
“Shh!  Look,” whispered the mayor pointing out the window.
Dorothy gave a confused look.  But she heeded her husband’s words and looked at what he was indicating.
A tender smile came to her face. “Aww!  They’re sound asleep.  It must’ve been such a hard training day that they must’ve nodded right off in the hammock.”
“Looks that way.  Dorothy, where do we keep that large thick blanket?” asked Parker.
“I think it’s in the hall closet,” responded Dorothy.
“Oh, that’s right.  I’ll go fetch it and take it out to them.  In the meantime, could you please call Hayley and Jones’s place and let them know that Sora will be spending the night here?” asked Parker as he made his way toward the exit of the kitchen.
But before he could leave, he caught a glimpse of his wife’s expression.  She looked almost amused.
“What?” he asked perplexedly.
“Acting a little out-of-character, aren’t we?” asked Dorothy.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” asked her husband.
“Nothing really.  But I do believe that most fathers who just found their daughter and their boyfriends in situations like these would be reacting very differently. Remember how my father reacted when he came upon us like that?”
Parker just shook his head amusedly with a small smile.  “I certainly remember that, and I also remember it was quite a while before I felt safe to visit you at your house after that.  But you are correct, dear.  If it were any other boy, I probably would be waking them up, giving them the riot act and then sending the boy on his way.  But not Sora.  Never him.”
“What about if it was Riku?”  asked Dorothy.
“Yes, there was a possibility could have been Riku as well and I can say for certain that I wouldn’t react any differently if it were him in this position.  In fact, from what I’ve heard, Selphie and the other children actually thought that Kairi would choose Riku.  They certainly were surprised to learn that it was Sora instead,” said Parker.
“I have to admit, I had my concerns about that. Kairi, Sora and Riku have always been the best of friends.  To jeopardize that friendship with a love triangle like that would have been a real shame.  But now, I think it all worked out for the best.  Sora and Kairi are happy together and Riku has been nothing but supportive of his best friends,” said Dorothy.
Parker went back to the window and gazed out at the sleeping couple.  “Yes, their adventures certainly brought out the best in all of them.  And because of that, there’s probably no boy I trust more than Sora.  How could I not after everything he’s done for not only our world, but all the worlds? More importantly, after everything he’s done for our daughter?”
“Not to mention how much Kairi has done for him. Sora often says that he couldn’t do the things he’s done if he didn’t have her and I see how true that is.  She’s never given up on him even during the times Sora was forgotten or thought to have been lost forever.  The devotion she has to the people who are important to her is immense,” said Dorothy.
“After everything they’ve been through for each other, special moments like these should not be denied them,” said Parker who then cleared his throat.  “But be that as it may, this kind of special moment better not happen too often.  After all, some standards must be upheld.”
Dorothy laughed.  “Of course, dear.”
“I’d better get that blanket.  The air might get colder tonight, and we wouldn’t want them to be disturbed,” said Parker as he resumed what he had been trying to do earlier.
Dorothy pulled out her Gummi Phone.  “I’ll tell Jones and Hayley that Sora was so exhausted when he brought Kairi home, it didn’t seem right to make him walk all the way home, so we let him spend the night,” she said.
“That sounds pretty good.  In fact, if we had been home when they got here, we probably would have done just that,” said Parker from outside the kitchen.
As Dorothy dialed the number of Sora’s parents, she looked out once more on the sleeping couple.  A loving smile came to her face.
‘Sleep well, you two.  You’ve been training so hard for that Mark of Mastery.  We’re all looking forward to watching you go through it and hoping you’ll pass with flying colors.’
________________________________________________________________
A short while later, Parker quietly opened the door to the backyard and exited outside.  In his hands, he held a large ocean blue blanket.
Taking care not to make a sound, he walked up to the hammock where his daughter and her boyfriend still laid sleeping. Carefully, he spread the blanket over the slumbering couple.
‘I hope that’ll be warm enough.’
Parker remained for a few moments watching over the sleeping two.  A tender smile came over his face as he gazed at his daughter.
‘Kairi, you probably already know this, but the day you came to us was the brightest day of our life.  Which makes sense because you carry one of the purest lights in all the worlds within your heart.  I hope that wherever life takes you and your friends, you still remain the sweet, loving girl we’ve always loved.’
Then he turned his attention to the spiky-haired boy in the hammock.  ‘Sora, you keep doing what you’ve always done and keep Kairi safe and happy.  I knew one day I would have to give up the title of the most important man in my daughter’s life.  But of all people to lose it to, I’m glad it was you.’
His thoughts concluded, Parker turned around and headed back to the house.  But as he was leaving, he thought he heard a familiar voice whisper two words.
“Thanks Daddy.”
Parker turned back to the sleeping couple.  He saw no indication that his daughter had awakened.  But that didn’t stop a smile from coming to his face as he resumed his trek back into the house.
‘Good night to both of you.  We’ll see you in the morning.  We’ll probably be having Sora’s favorite breakfast tomorrow.  And I’ll probably shoot him a few small glares just to keep him on his toes,’ he thought with a chuckle as he opened the back door and re-entered his house.
________________________________________________________________
The moment her father had left, Kairi opened her eyes.  She sent a grateful smile in the direction her father had gone.  Craning her head, she gazed up at the peaceful sleeping face of the love of her life.
‘I must’ve fallen asleep first and I guess Sora didn’t want to wake me up.  What did I ever do to deserve someone like him?” she thought knowing that if she posed that question to Sora, he’d give her a multitude of answers.
Kairi then let out a little chuckle.  ‘Lucky for us that Dad was so understanding.  But we’d better not make too big a habit out of this. Don’t want to push our luck.’
The Princess of Heart inched toward her boyfriend’s face and placed a small, gentle kiss on his lips.  After pulling away, she noticed his smile got a little bigger while he slept.  “Good night, Sora,” she whispered.
Kairi then shuffled herself downward so she could place her head onto Sora’s chest.  She smiled as she listened to Sora’s heartbeat.  The sound always meant the two most important things regarding him to her: that he was alive, and he was with her.
As she let her favorite sound in all the worlds lull her back to sleep, Kairi thought about the future.  A future in which, hopefully, she would fall asleep to the sound of Sora’s heartbeat every night, and they would both be the first faces they’d see each morning much like they would tomorrow.
While neither she nor Sora nor anyone could say for sure what lay ahead of them on their uncertain path, she knew one thing was positively irrefutable: Sora was her destiny and she was his.

Notes from the Mad Doctor:
Hope you enjoyed this story.  It was really my first time doing straight-up fluff, so I hope I did a good job.
Hope you also enjoyed my take on Kairi’s parents.  I bet you were all surprised to see Kairi’s dad not playing the overprotective dad card.  I imagine that after learning everything Sora’s done for Kairi, he’d cut him a little slack.  After all, how many fathers can say their daughter’s boyfriend sacrificed their lives so she would live?
Since I couldn’t come up with good Kingdom Hearts-ish sounding names for Kairi’s parents (and Sora’s parents for their brief mention), I decided to name them after recurring actors from Disney live-action movies.  Here are their derivations:
Parker, Kairi’s Father: Fess Parker from Davey Crockett and Old Yeller
Dorothy, Kairi’s Mother: Dorothy McGuire from Swiss Family Robinson and Old Yeller
Hayley, Sora’s Mother: Hayley Mills from Pollyanna and The Parent Trap (also doubles as a reference to Haley Joel Osment)
Jones, Sora’s Father: Dean Jones from the Herbie the Love Bug film series
Now for some words of thanks.
I give my thanks to whoever reads, comments, likes and/or reblogs this story.
I’d also like to thank all the artists and writers from last year’s SoKai Week.  You were a big inspiration in getting me to participate this year.
Also, a big thank you to the artists and writers whose work I had the pleasure of witnessing this year.  You all did a great job and I really enjoyed your work.
And an especially big thank you to the moderators of SoKai Week for enabling us to be part of a great collection.  Hopefully, next year, I’ll have something for every day of the week.
Stay tuned for more from the Mad Doctor in the future!

Training Days
FFN | AO3
Summary: "Oh, and by "us," I mean me and Lea. He's really sorry for all the trouble he caused. I told him it's fine, but he won't stop apologizing. I'll admit that I was a little scared of him at first, but I've gotten to know him better. All he wanted was to help his friend. Honestly, it's hard not to like him."
A peek into Kairi's and Lea's days of learning how to use the Keyblade. Written for Step Forward: A Kairi Fanzine
A/N: I would very much like to thank @kairizine for letting me work on this project. You guys are absolutely amazing and I couldn’t say how much I enjoyed being a part of this zine. For all my followers who haven’t had a chance to pick up this lovely zine, a second round of pre-orders is dropping on July 5th, so you guys should check that out for sure! Also tumblr fucked my formatting press f to pay respects.
It had been two weeks since Kairi started training with Axel. Or at least, it felt like it had been two weeks. Merlin said that the world they were training in existed outside of time, so it probably wasn’t that long to everybody else. But for her at least, it was valuable time. Time where she could learn how to use her Keyblade properly, and to finally get her chance to fight.
She also had time to interact with the man who had—at one point—kidnapped her. That was something she was still coming to terms with. Axel saved Sora and apologized for what he’d done to her, but it still didn’t make it any easier to be training with him.
“Yo, Kairi.” Speaking of Axel, the redhead showed up once more, looking almost uncomfortable with the idea of having to pull her from her thoughts. If there was some reassurance to all this, at least Axel was just as bad with handling talking to his former victim as she was talking to her kidnapper. “Thought you could use some company. Merlin said you’d just finished learning about how to use Fire, and as the resident fire elemental, I call myself an expert in the subject.” If it weren’t for the fact that his hand was running through his hair, a sign of nerves, Kairi would’ve been sure his discomfort was perceived on her end given the way he didn’t seem bothered.
“I’m fine, Axel, I don’t need teaching from a ‘fire expert’”—she raised fingers, making air quotations at Axel to show she didn’t really buy it—“to learn how to use a Fire spell. Merlin has it all covered.”
“Right.” She noticed the way Axel slightly deflated at her refusal to train with him. When he spoke, his voice sounded more hollow. “Hey, Kairi, just so you know, I really am sorry. About kidnapping you, and all that. I know I’ve said it before but I wanted to say it again.” He left, and Kairi couldn’t help the unpleasant feeling that arose in her heart.
-x-
Another few weeks of training passed, Merlin said it hadn’t even been a day in the real world. Which was fair, it meant Sora and Riku wouldn’t be missing her too long, at least. And it meant another month around Axel, training. She was slowly feeling competent: Merlin had decided that it was time to start training her in using her light as a weapon. It was a sign of progress towards becoming a Keyblade Master.
What was odd was that when she stumbled upon the normally energetic pyromaniac this time, Axel seemed to be a little less upbeat than normal. He’d continued his stream of apologies, expressing how much he regretted what he’d done, but Kairi doubted that’s what had him down. Deciding it was finally time to return his interest in getting to know her, she sat down next to him. “What’s on your mind?”
Axel jumped, having not noticed her approach. “It’s nothing,” he waved her off.
Kairi frowned, looking at Axel skeptically. He raised his hands in defense of her stare. “Okay, so maybe it is something, but it’s not really something you need to worry about. Just that I can’t shake the feeling…” He shook his head, almost as though he couldn’t believe what he was saying.
“Feeling?” Kairi asked. She didn’t really expect him to give him an answer, but she wanted to know. It was obviously something a lot more important than he was letting on. When he didn’t answer after another moment, she smiled. “I didn’t know you had any of those.”
“Ha ha.” Axel gave a sarcastic laugh, but also a small smile at Kairi, grateful for the joke. “Hey, y’know I’m not a Nobody anymore. I can feel, just as much as you can!” It seemed he wasn’t willing to confront what was going on, and she couldn’t blame him for that. It wasn’t like she’d given him any reason to believe she trusted or wanted to help him.
And to be fair, she wasn’t sure that she did trust him. She may not have been mad over it right now, but despite his regret  Axel had still kidnapped her. It seemed like a good idea to not press for now. “Sure you can, just like you couldn’t when you were a Nobody.”
“I couldn’t!”
Kairi laughed at his protest. “You don’t kidnap somebody to see your best friend again if you don’t care about them a little.”
Axel sat there for a moment. “Right, sometimes I forget that even if I couldn’t feel guilt over what I was doing to you, I still felt something.” Maybe it was his way of justifying it: he couldn’t feel. He couldn’t feel bad over what he had done because he couldn’t feel. But he seemed to be feeling the regret of that now. “I know you’re probably tired of hearing it, but I’m sorry, about all of that.”
For the first time, she acknowledged his apology. “I know.”
-x-
Two months of rigorous training. Two months of her only company being Merlin and Axel. Although they still weren’t close friends, things had started getting easier between her and Axel. Kairi found herself talking to him more since she’d found him that day, or at least she was more willing to talk to him. For one, she almost believed his apologies in that he truly did regret his actions.
This time as Axel approached Kairi, he seemed slightly more at ease. “Hey, how’s training been going so far?”
“Hey Axel,” Kairi smiled. She couldn’t believe that she was at least appreciating Axel’s presence for once. “I’m pretty sure soon I’ll be ready to take you down. What about you, think you can take me on?”
“Nah, not like I have years of experience on you. Anyways I wanted to see if you were up for a bit of a break.” He reached into his pocket, pulling out two light blue bars of ice cream. Kairi couldn’t help the way that her eyes lit up as soon as she saw them. “Whenever we finished a mission, Roxas and I would go to the clocktower back in Twilight Town and share these.”
Kairi grabbed the ice cream bar, taking a small bite and wincing as the cold hit her teeth. “I like that tradition.”
“I figured we could resume it, now that we’re training together.” Axel grinned, seemingly relieved that she was willing to enjoy it. “Or at least that’s what Merlin said, starting tomorrow we’ll be training together.”
“I’ll look forward to it. Don’t think I’ll go easy on you either.” Of course, that revelation couldn’t help but make her a little nervous. But Merlin wouldn’t have her fight Axel if he didn’t think she could hold her own against him.
“Wouldn’t dream of anything less.” It seemed Axel was at least willing to go along with it. “Hey, Kairi, I just want you to know-”
“You’re sorry, I know.” Kairi smiled, leaving Axel looking at her in surprise.
“I’ve said it that many times now?”
“I think I got it memorized.”
-x-
After yet another loss to Axel, Kairi and her sparring partner decided to enjoy a treat. There were still quite a few losses in their practice fights, but she did have a couple wins to her name, and that was progress enough for them to be celebrating. He reached into the cooler, handing her an ice cream bar as they sat on the cliffside watching the sunset. Axel told some stories from the Organization to keep her entertained.
“So I mentioned how I got sent on solo missions all the time for the Organization, stuff that needed to be kept...under the radar.” He seemed hesitant to fully explain what that meant, which made Kairi all the more curious about what he was trying to explain. “See, a lot of those had me going to Castle Oblivion—terrible place by the way, more boring to look at than The Castle that Never Was and impossible to navigate, anyways—I was chasing down some chamber for our boss. Not sure what was in it, but what I do know is the Castle did not want us finding it. So this one time I was–”
“Castle Oblivion...” Kairi frowned, causing Axel to pause in his account. Sora had never mentioned the castle in his stories, and Riku had only mentioned it a couple of times in passing, yet the name brought with it a feeling of dread… “That means you know Naminé?”
Axel nodded. “That’s right. I was one of the people who was guarding her while she messed with Sora’s memories.” Before Kairi could say anything more, Axel raised his hand, stopping her. “Don’t worry, I wasn’t one of the ones hurting her! I was actually the one that helped her.”
He...what? Kairi stared at him in confusion. “Right, Sora...probably wouldn’t have been able to tell you. I was the one who let Naminé go.”
Although she couldn’t communicate directly with the blonde to confirm Axel’s story, she felt Naminé faintly in her heart, confirming Axel’s story: “He did. If it weren’t for him, Sora might be lost forever to the Organization’s trap…”
“Really?”
“I think it was because he didn’t want the Organization to win. For my freedom, I owe him, almost as much as I do Sora…”
“Hello, Kairi! You in there?” Axel waved his hand in front of Kairi, pulling her attention away from Naminé’s presence, which had once more gone dormant in her heart.
Kairi smiled. “Just getting a message to pass on. Naminé says thank you.”
Axel looked at her, and his eyebrows slightly raised in surprise. She wasn’t sure if he hadn’t expected Naminé’s thanks, for the two of them to have any form of communication, or for Kairi to pass on the message.“She did? I don’t suppose she left a message for you to accept my apology this time, did she?”
Kairi paused for a moment, as though she were conversing with Naminé once more before smiling. “Nope, nothing on that one.”
Lea laughed at her answer, and it wasn’t long before Kairi found herself laughing too at his reaction.
She was still a long way to forgiving him for what he’d done, but maybe Lea wasn’t so bad.
-x-
It became a tradition to meet up after training to snack on some ice cream and talk about whatever thoughts crossed their minds. Most of the time, conversation flowed between Kairi and Lea easier than she would have ever suspected when their training had first begun, but right now the exchange seemed more one sided than ever. Lea appeared lost in thought, and Kairi’s attempts at getting him to talk about the various details of his life were earning no results.
Normally she would have been content to leave that where it was—Lea wouldn’t have confided in her anyways. But now she could tell there was something bothering him, and she didn’t feel right leaving it alone. “Lea, are you alright?”
“Huh?” He shook his head before giving a laugh, running his hand through his hair as though nervous. “I guess I’m just distracted. I was thinking about an old friend.” She stayed silent, and after a moment Lea continued. “You know Saïx–I’m serious, stop staring at me like I’ve grown a second head or something.”
After another quiet moment, she finally managed to find her voice: “What!?” Lea was friends with Saïx? How could Lea be have been friends with him of all people? Saïx kidnapped her!
...Just like Axel had.
The realization that she’d nearly forgotten that Lea had kidnapped her was sobering, but it did manage to put a damper on some of her surprise at least. “You and Saïx were friends?”
“I know, a big shocker now, but back when we were kids, Isa was my best friend.” Lea seemed quick to play if off. “We used to get into a lot of trouble back in the good old days. Most of it was my idea.” A low chuckle escaped him. It sounded bitter, like Lea still couldn’t believe just how much things changed. “We would sneak into Ansem’s castle so we could get a peak at his experiments, or just to cause some problems.”
“That doesn’t sound like Saïx.” Kairi pointed out. But it made sense. They had both lost their hearts, and the Lea in front of her felt as different from Axel as the Isa he was describing sounded from Saïx.
“Losing your heart changes you.” Lea’s answer was simple, but he had a point. Even if they had hearts, neither he nor Saïx learned that fact until it was already too late.
Kairi nodded. “That’s why you both drifted apart?”
“Part of it.” For once it looked like Lea was getting uncomfortable with the direction they were going in. Isa, it seemed, was a much more touchy subject than Kairi would’ve guessed. “He changed for sure, but there was also the way he treated them. Roxas and–”
“And?”
Lea didn’t respond. He wasn’t sure of who the “and” he was referring to was in the first place.
They ate their ice cream in silence, neither of them sure how to continue for a few minutes before Lea finally spoke. “You know, when I first saw you, you reminded me of somebody. I don’t know who just...somebody important.”
“Naminé, maybe?” It made the most sense, Naminé was her Nobody. Lea knew her. That had to be it. Except he shook his head.
“Nah, not her. I’d know if it was her I was thinking of. I just don’t remember. That’s why I was so quiet that day.” Kairi knew which one he was talking about. The one where they’d had their first real conversation.
The way Lea looked now reminded Kairi a lot of that day. She’d never seen him so muted before, and it was still an uncomfortable look for him now. “Don’t worry, Lea. Once we beat Xehanort, I’ll ask Naminé help you with your memories, and we’ll find whoever they are.” And she would, she didn’t turn her back on her friends so easily.
“Right, thanks.” Lea turned to her, still frowning in thought for a moment.
He grinned shortly after, though Kairi wasn’t sure if it was a realization about who he was forgetting or a joke until moments later when he said, “hey, have you ever thought of dying your hair black.”
“What?”
Lea raised his hands up in defense. “I just can’t shake the image of you with black hair it sounds right.”
“Lea, that’s not funny!”
“Sure it is!” He laughed, and she lightly smacked him for the joke. “Sorry, sorry, alright I’ll let it go...for now.”
“Lea!”
-x-
It didn’t take Kairi long to realize that their time in the training world was coming to a close. Her fighting was as flawless as one could get when kept out of the heat of a real battle, and Lea had stopped trying to throw his Keyblade every ten seconds. To her surprise, he had adjusted to close combat and swordplay remarkably well. Merlin had told Riku would be there with some new equipment in a few days. It all made it feel very real, and very final.
Which was why Lea and Kairi had returned to their cliffside hangout, trading stories and sharing idle conversation. Lea told stories of teaching Roxas about the worlds and his adventures in Radiant Garden, and in return Kairi told stories about her time on the islands. It was the best they could do to keep their mind off the battle that was looming ever closer.
“Sora was so surprised when I told him I couldn’t swim. He tried to teach me but his idea of teaching me meant having me just start flailing my arms in the water,” Kairi laughed as she remembered the story from a couple months after arriving on Destiny Islands. “If it wasn’t for Riku, he might’ve drowned me with how bad his instructions were.”
“You’d think Sora would know how to swim better than that since he lived there. Hard to believe he couldn’t even explain the motions he was making.”
“His heart was in the right place, at least.” Kairi smiled. It was a fond memory of her friends, one she would’ve liked to think on a little longer.
Lea laughed as well, and they fell into an easy silence as Kairi started searching her mind for the next ridiculous story of her adventures with her friends.
“Hey, Kairi.” Lea raised his hand hesitantly, almost as though he were regretting what he was about to say. “I just, ya know, in case everything goes wrong, I just wanted to say sorry again. You know for–”
“I know.” She cut him off before he could ramble further. She’d heard it more than enough times over the course of their time training together. “And I forgive you.”

Can I ask about some modern!au headcanons about Rox and Ven as twins? Or anything about Roxas and Ven (Sora too if you want). I love your blog btw!! :D
Here’s an older post with some good sibling AU HCs, in case y’all haven’t seen it!
In a Modern AU, these two are the more tame version of Zack & Cody - unlike them though, Roxas and Ventus are extremely close and actually get along ! While they might hate being asked over and over if they can read each other’s thoughts or if they constantly finish each other sentences - basically the twin stereotypes - that’s LITERALLY them. Roxas could walk into the room, looking slightly confused and Ventus would just go “you left your keys on the desk and don’t forget your jacket too, it’s on your bed” without even lifting his eyes from his phone and boom that’s it, fixed.
That sort of telepathy and close bond helps a lot, actually - cause Roxas is straightforward, but he has a lot of trouble expressing affection to his loved ones. He’ll tell Ventus that he has something stuck between his teeth while in public, but he CANNOT tell him that he loves him for being such a good brother. Ventus is the opposite, he has the habit of saying “I love you” at the end of every conversation whenever he talks with his family, or remind them to stay hydrated and be safe when they go out. But being straightforward and telling Roxas that he’s had enough of him leaving his socks everywhere ? Too hard, nope.
As children, they were kinda forced to wear the exact same clothes and thus people often confused them and got them mixed. Ventus took it as a compliment cause hey, his brother is pretty cool, but Roxas got mad because he and his brother deserved their own individuality. As they got older, they were finally free to develop their tastes and sense of fashion - but turns out they’re both really into checkered patterns so they often take the other’s jacket or shirt by accident. A cute detail is that Ventus wears cat paw socks and Roxas wears emoji or avocado ones.
Contrary to popular belief, Ventus is a night owl just like Roxas. They both sleep in and wake up late for everything, but Ventus is known for taking a lot of naps throughout the day and still be sleepy. While Roxas is the guy who stays up at 4 am hoarding cursed memes on his phone. Speaking of phones, Ventus has Roxas saved as “baby brother”, even though they don’t know or really care about who’s the older and who’s the youngest. And then Roxas has Ventus saved as “the good clone”.
They have always shared a room. As toddlers they used to sleep on the same bed, then they switched to a bunk bed and finally, to simply taking one half of the room for themselves. Ventus doesn’t mind sharing cause he likes having his brother around and every night feels like a sleepover, but Roxas often dreamed about moving to the attic just so he can decorate it and invite his friends over - without worrying about bothering Ventus. The second their parents gave him the choice to do so, he backed down in a heartbeat. He’d never admit it outloud but Roxas would miss Ventus a lot, even if they were like a few feet away.
Unlike Sora and Vanitas who CANNOT switch places because of their vast differences, Ventus and Roxas can and WILL do it if one needs to pass a specific class that the other is good at. This also happens at home, Roxas is the one who gets in trouble the most but he’s pretty much immune to scolding and sermons from their parents, but Ventus is expected to “know better” - so he might get the short end of the stick more than often. Sometimes, Roxas will pose as him and go through all of those talks, just to try and give Ventus a break. Ventus doesn’t have the courage to do the same, so instead he tries getting some heat off his brother’s back by talking to their parents. And speaKING of parents, Roxas is a mama’s boy and Ventus thinks it’s the funniest shit.

Even stilled when Lauriam held a red rose out to him. "I thought you couldn't make these anymore."
"I cannot. I visited the World of an old friend and they were kind enough to let me take one." Lauriam explained.
Even slowly took the rose from him. "An old friend?"
"A World I saved long ago."
"Would you take me there some time?" Even questioned and brought the rose up to his face to smell it. It felt too real in his fingers.
"He's trying to get better about guests, so I should be able to manage that." Lauriam gave a small nod. "We should put it in water."
"He?" Even felt his stomach tighten. Had Lauriam given him someone else's token of affection? "I could freeze it."
"The prince of the World. Apparently Organization XIII tried to give him trouble years ago. From what Belle said it sounds like Dilan's Nobody was there." Lauriam stepped a little closer to him. "Save your magic, Even."
“Belle?” Even questioned and looked away. “/You/ told me to work on my magic, Lauriam.”
“I do not believe they have gotten married by this point in time.” Lauriam explained and reached up a hand to place on Even’s cheek and draw his attention back to him. “A touch too honest of a memory, is all. It was an ill chosen gift.”
“Right, the whole past future matter.” Even frowned down at Lauriam. “You want it back?”
“Right.” Lauriam gave a small nod. “No. It is yours. But I should have thought it through better. My intention is to build foundation on who we are now. To give you a gift that is so thoroughly Marluxia was ill chosen.” Lauriam swallowed and withdrew his hand. “But I found I could not help myself.”
Even grabbed his hand and held it awkwardly before him. “Once then. For old times sake.”
“You’ve never been one to stop at once.” Lauriam whispered. “Perhaps I should take it back.”
“Experiments need proper testing.” Even whispered back and leaned down. “No, you said it is mine. Perhaps we could use it as... closure.”
“Closure?” Lauriam hummed. “We’d need to set it on fire afterwards.”
“How did you die?”
“Exhaustion, mostly. Desperation. Sora would have done such a lovely job if only his rage had been directed properly. But it does not matter now. Pieces are back where they are meant to be.”
“It has been... odd, getting to actually know Riku.”
“Seeing Ienzo socialize, you mean.” Lauriam laughed a little.
“Yes.” Even sighed. “So. Fire.”
“Full closure.” Lauriam nodded. “And then, we go on a date. Just us. No cloud of Vexen and Marluxia.”
“Do you forgive yourself then?”
“Oh, never.” Lauriam shook his head a little. “But I don’t have to forgive myself to move on. So let’s set up our little experiment.”
“Set up?”
“Fire, Even, Fire. Unless you learned fire magic after Esuna?”
“...Don’t make fun of your elders, Lauriam.”
Lauriam hummed and turned away. “Only you.” And then he smirked over his shoulder. “Besides, I’ve technically existed longer than you.”
“You’re terrible.” Even laughed.
“You knew that already.” Lauriam laughed back. “Fire. I have no idea how to work your lab, Even. I am much more used to synthesis.”
“Right. The Moogle like you.” Even walked past him. “I’ll teach you how to work a Bunsen Burner. Actual science.”
“There is plenty of science behind synthesis.”
“There is more magic than science.”
“One and the same at the core.” Lauriam held a finger up to silence Even’s next complaint. “Are you a scientist or a mage? You are both, Even.”
Even heaved a sigh. “You are correct, but my original point still stands.”
“Science. Yes. Show away.”
Even lead Lauriam over to a table with said Bunsen Burner along with various flasks and test tubes. “Lauriam?”
“Hmm?”
“You truly want to forget?”
“I never said forget. I want to move on. I want to feel like I am living my life. Not a shadow of Marluxia’s.” Lauriam sighed. “I recognize that the division between Vexen and Even was slim. That Vexen allowed you a moral slip that this life does not. But I am not Marluxia, and I refuse to act as if I am.”
“Okay.” Even gave a small nod and finally coated the rose he held in ice. “A date?”
“We can go wherever you like.”
“Where- where would you have gone before?”
Lauriam stared at him, eyes slightly wide. “Even you know my home world is destroyed.”
“You can travel to other Worlds I-” Even heaved a sigh. “No. Of course you would want to stay in familiar territory. I’m sorry.”
“Tact has never been one of your strong suits.” Lauriam gave him a small smile. “There’s a few Worlds I have not explored fully yet. I thought we could just walk around and find somewhere nice.”
“That would be nice.” Even agreed. He set the rose to the side and turned the flame on. “Tell me about back then. Your thought process.”
“Vexen had shown that he could not be loyal to me. Axel wanted to prove he could be. I was foolish enough to believe that Axel’s motives and mine would work together.” Lauriam explained softly. “I think about it frequently, Even. What would have happened if I had never told Axel the truth. That mission was not supposed to have causalities.”
“You blame yourself and not Lea.”
“The more I learn about Axel and Lea the more I understand he has always followed his heart. Axel’s loyalty, just like Vexen’s, was never Marluxia’s to hold.” Lauriam picked up the ice covered rose. “But more than anything else. I regret not doing it myself. Deep down I did not expect Axel to go through with it. I was not aware of how strong his conviction to Saix was, nor how much he wanted to see Roxas again.”
“I forgave you.” Even stated. He had never truly cared about the politics. He had been mad with Marluxia because that castle should have been Vexen’s. But the more he heard about what happened after the more it sounded like a trap. Like they were sent to slaughter.
“I know.” Lauriam sighed and held the icy petals over the open flame. “How did it feel? I remember the feel of death. That feel of unraveling. Of your emptiness finally being set free. Of your soul leaving.”
“Dreadful.” Even whispered and watched as normal fire tried to melt magic ice. Their plan might have had a hole in it. But that might have been the point. They could never let go. “I remember the smell, mostly. I remember feeling betrayed. I remember Sora looking confused. And who could blame him?” Even placed a hand to his chest. “I remember being worried. And then Axel did have the Riku Replica kill Zexion...”
“Vexen’s dying thoughts were Zexion?”
“Even’s had been Ienzo.” Even’s voice was small. “In the end I should be thankful, but the scars make it challenging.”
“Understandable.” Lauriam drew the flower away from the flame. “Perhaps we could put it in the freezer instead.”
“Not working?”
“Not in any capacity that is satisfying.” Lauriam turned the flower, a small bit of ice was gone, but the point was for their to be flames.
Even turned the fire off. “Soak it in water and put it in the freezer it is. Do I only get that date after it is gone?”
“It does sound like this experiment will need to be picked up tomorrow. But I think you still deserve a date today.” Lauriam hummed a little. “For talking.”
“Good.” Even smiled and took the flower from him. “Tell me about the World you want to go to.”
“It’s called San Fransokyo. It’s a very technologically based world. Tall buildings. Curious transit system. And apparently it’s own team of heros.” Lauriam leaned against the table while he watched Even.
“I think some version of the Riku Replica went there. I tried to keep track of where the vessels got to.” Even waved a hand at him. “But at the same time did not truly care.”
“Where do your loyalties lay these days?”
“They’ve always been to Lord Ansem and Ienzo. /My/ king and prince.” Even dismissed his magic and turned the sink on. The rose only looked sad as he ran it under water. The freezer would only make it an awkward chunk of flower. Nothing of the intricate designs Vexen had practiced only to impress Marluxia. But that was for the best.
“Right.” Lauriam looked away. “And me?”
“What about you?”
“Are you loyal to me, Even? Can I finally hold your loyalty?”
Even looked at Lauriam’s fragile expression for only a second. “We’ll see after our date.”
“Fair.” Lauriam let out a heavy breath. “My loyalty has never been to you, after all.”
“No, you are only loyal to yourself.”
“No, I once had many people I was loyal to. But times change. Marluxia’s loyalty was Larxene. I sent her to her death as well. You are far from the only death that is heavy on my heart, Even.”
“Is that supposed to make me feel better?” Even questioned as he turned off the sink and walked the dripping red rose over to the freezer. He’d put a note on it later. Ienzo would ask.
“No. Not at all.” Lauriam shook his head. “Only stating facts and reminders.”
“A reminder to never forgive yourself.”
“That is correct.”
Even sighed and closed the freezer. “I understand.” He walked back over to Lauriam and placed his hands on the table behind him, pinning him in place. “I want dinner and dessert.”
“Of course, Even.” Lauriam gave him a small smile. “Anything you want.”
“I want you to forgive yourself.”
“Anything but that.” Lauriam turned his head away.
“Then I want ice cream.”
“That I can manage.”

– Considering the conversation between Sora and Ventus in the ending of the Last Episode, is this saying that the “just-born heart” that Ventus connects with in the opening is Sora’s?
Nomura: Yes. At first we supposed that it could be Sora before he was born, but because of opinions from overseas that “the heart doesn’t exist until after birth”, we discarded that portrayal.
Interesting post. I actually do remember when they were referred to as Unbirths in the promotional material. I think the theory from that post is a lot more interesting than the canon explanation where they just come from the negativity in Vanitas after he was split from Ventus. I always thought that was kinda lame, honestly. I didn’t even know that the Magic Mirror was supposed to be an Unversed originally.
BBS and the Dark Seeker Saga is all about the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. So it makes total sense that unversed involved the concept of death/anti-life. Ventus was originally supposed to connect to Sora’s heart before he was born, which probably was supposed to be important. It makes sense for Vanitas and the Unversed/Unbirths to be connected to that. I wish they had kept that idea in. I honestly don’t know why it’s so hard to believe that the heart could exist before birth.
Tumblr media
There’s also the unexplored concept of the Void. When Nomura said there’s more to the Unversed than we know, perhaps that was what he meant. Vanitas’s Keylade is called “Void Gear” and the song that plays during his Lingering Will boss fight is called “Enter the Void”. And the way Xemnas says “those who have returned to the void” in the manga does make it sound like the void is where hearts originate from, maybe before birth. And that was probably what Master Xehanort was referring to when he got into that argument with Eraqus.
Tumblr media
It was darkness. Just darkness. Well, no, not even darkness.
If Aqua sank into the Realm of Darkness, then where had I been? Did I even exist? I’m sure I… Yeah, I know I existed. But I have no idea where I was. I was imprisoned behind Xehanort, but my consciousness—my heart—was sealed away. So, where was my heart? It wasn’t in the darkness, so maybe it was just in a world of “nothingness”. A world without Darkness or Light. You can’t have light without darkness and you can’t have darkness without light. It was somewhere like that.
I wasn’t asleep like Ven was. It wasn’t the Realm of Sleep—I wasn’t dreaming, I was just in a world of nothingness. And that void became pain and sorrow and anger that rushed over me. All I could do is writhe in its grasp. Maybe that place was like the world where Unversed came from. A void that only takes in grief and suffering. A world where hope and joy could never exist.
The void was like the darkness, but also not. Nothing could spring forth from there. And all I could do in that world is wait. I can no longer remember what I thought, what I did, in that world; I just waited. No, that’s not quite right. I believed. In our promise.
Like Vanitas, Terra has a Lingering Will, too. In Terra’s character file story he talks about how he was in the void and how that was like the world where the Unversed came from. It was not a world of darkness, just a world of nothingness.
“You know, right, because you all have hearts!” Sora said, testing Xigbar. “Axel and Roxas and Naminé, and that other girl. I felt what Roxas felt and…they laughed together, got mad, and they grieved.” The ache in his heart belonged to everyone. “You have to have a heart to cry.”
Xigbar snorted derisively. “It’s about time you noticed.”
All the organization members had hearts. Xigbar took that fact for granted, like it was just obvious.
“Oh, the things you hear from a guy with no heart,” Xigbar said through his hilarity.
“Don’t let us down now, kiddo. Shouldn’t be too much trouble without a heart,” Xigbar told Saïx.
The exception to that was always Saïx. Xigbar knew some secret about him. If Isa’s heart was in the void like Terra’s, that might explain it. Saïx could only feel negative emotions like rage, but he didn’t have a heart. If it’s in the void, the world of nothingness.
When he was recompleted in KH3D, it seemed like MX was controlling him like a puppet, unlike with Xigbar. And then in KH3, it didn’t seem like he had any self-awareness while he was in his berserk state fighting Lea. The only other one who had that blank look was Terra. So, I think those two were probably the only ones who became vessels without any choice or free will. Their hearts weren’t merged with Xehanort’s, it was sent to the void. And unlike with the others, the power of waking would need to be used on them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then there’s the Lich. The word “lich” is from Old English meaning “corpse”. It carried the hearts of Sora’s friends through the Sleeping Worlds and its purpose was to usher hearts down to the deepest abyss. Is the abyss the same thing as the void? Is the Lich taking people’s hearts into the void, making it so that they have “died”, giving them an “un-birth” so to speak? Then they can possess the “corpse” that is left behind? The “X” put into the organization’s names means “death” and Nobodies are empty shells, or corpses.
We Keyblade Masters have a special gift. We can extract a heart, be it our own or that of another. By continuing this cycle, it is possible to remain in the world of the living forever.
Master Xehanort adopted a very Lich-like technique.
It seems this body, this name will be my last. The lives I have lived over the ages could fill volumes, but for now, I must focus on what matters most.The Keyblade has been successfully passed down, generation to generation, and it seems a Keyblade Master devoted to the darkness may finally arise. Until now, I have watched over the course of events from a distance. Perhaps the time has come to intervene.
There’s also Luxu and the Master of Masters. We know Luxu has been body hopping, effectively remaining immortal since the time of the Keyblade War. This is very Lich-like behavior, too. I doubt the Master or Master or even Luxu are human.
Saïx: Pitiful Heartless, mindlessly collecting hearts. And yet they know not the true power of what they hold. The rage of the Keyblade releases those hearts. They gather in darkness, masterless and free…until they weave together to make Kingdom Hearts. And when that time comes, we can truly, finally exist.
I still think Saïx was speaking as some kind of non-human entity here, even if he wasn’t aware of it. Whatever entity was possessing him wanted to “truly, finally exist”. Is that what Luxu and/or the MoM were really after?

Doing yearly writing reviews isn’t really a thing. But once you start doing ‘em, it doesn’t feel right to stop, you know?
Seeing progress in other arts is of course a lot easier than seeing progress in writing, but I think there is some forward movement for me, especially when I also consider my compilations from 2017 and 2018.
In regards to 2019, I’ve selected various kinds of writing for this post: analytical essays, opinion pieces, news articles, creative fiction, and maybe some works that can’t be categorized so easily, too. It was a very difficult year on many fronts; I dealt with job struggles, financial insecurity, destroyed relationships, medical hardships, seemingly endless cyberstalking and online harassment.
But there were good things, too. New friendships. New passions. New outlooks. I feel like I’ve learned and grown a lot more in these past couple of months than I have in a long, long time.
The end of 2019 is more than just the end of one year. It’s also the end of a decade. But I think the best advice I’ve received all decade comes from this year:
✄ Sometimes, you have to say yes to saying no.
✄ If you can’t do something well, do something poorly!
✄ The best option may be to simply not engage.
✄ You don’t have to apologize for disappointing others.
✄ Your worth isn’t measured by how much you “accomplish.”
✄ You have rights: the right to have your needs and wants respected, the right to make mistakes, the right to determine your own priorities, the right to not be responsible for the actions or problems of others, the right to express yourself, the right to be human. It’s not selfish or narcissistic to stand up for your rights.
And, since it is the end of the decade and all, here’s also a comparison between one nerdy fandom essay from August 2010 and another from August 2019:
2010 (with added spaces because yes, this really was just a huge block of text originally):
Also, in my own opinion, nobody really gave a damn for Xion all that much save for Roxas. I mean, yeah, Axel cared a little, but in the end, he got totally mad at her, got mad any time she was mentioned, got mad whenever Roxas worried about her, got mad when she showed up at the clock tower. She was his friend, yeah, and he didn’t want her to go, but in the end, he would have chosen Roxas above her anytime.
The other “mean villains” didn’t really care. Luxord didn’t care, Demyx didn’t care, Xaldin got exasperated once at her, but overall didn’t care, Xigbar didn’t care, Xemnas outright said he didn’t care, Saix was rather cruel to her, but really, in the end, he didn’t give a damn for her. The others weren’t around long enough to have an impression on her. I think even Riku didn’t really care all that much for her, in all honesty. He just wanted his best friend back.
Also, you have to keep in mind that we played the game through Roxas’ perspective, and it’s in my personal belief that he fell in love with Xion. And if you’re in love with someone, when she gets into a coma, or goes missing, or ignores you, you’re gonna be upset, and talk about it. So Roxas did.
But you know, he doesn’t actually do a lot of it until the end of the game. Before that, it’s all about the THREE of them. He loves his friends (even if he doesn’t know it), and he wants them to be together forever, but when Xion goes missing or whatnot and they can’t ALL have ice cream together, he gets upset.
2019:
I’ve written more on the subject here, but to keep it short, Ryuko only tries to take Nui’s life when she’s convinced herself that she’s a monster, and her development is less about her becoming less okay with killing people and more about how she won’t let her anger and rage control her. What makes Ryuko’s attitude so different in the end isn’t that she’s reconsidered her thoughts on murder but that she’s composed. Come episode 22, Ryuko ain’t saying that she’s gonna kill anyone to sound tough or to intimidate. She keeps her cool even against her worst enemies.
But that’s just what I think! Maybe I’ve interpreted the character all wrong. But Ryuko’s freak-out after she goes berserk and hurts others in episode 12, her devotion to defending even people she’s just met… I just struggle to see her as someone who’s actually a-okay with killing. The fact that Ryuko’s perfect fantasy in episode 20 depicts her as a sweet girl without any of the violent tendencies that she has in reality also points this way; not to mention, Ryuko outright admits that her picking fights and causing trouble are bad things when remarking on her childhood in episode 8.
And Ryuko? She doesn’t want to be bad. All the poor girl’s ever wanted is love, and I can’t imagine she’d ever think that getting angry and killing people would get her a lot of that.
Progress may be slow, but it does happen.
At least, I think so.

And personally? I find that sweetness just absolutely, utterly charming. When I understood what the rap was trying to communicate, I couldn’t imagine listening to the song without it. Heck, even before I understood, I found the “without rap” edits empty and barren. No matter how “silly” the lyrics might come off, the unabashed cheese is fantastic. The rap section that I was once “meh” about legitimately became my favorite part of the song.
Plus, I really can’t stress enough how sad the song is when it’s purely Ryuko. The official [nZk] remix replaces Senketsu’s rap with a reprise of Ryuko’s first verse, which recounts how she and Senketsu met. And it’s tragic! She says, “But I’m all alone,” and she is. Senketsu isn’t singing with her, no matter her claim that she can hear his voice. Considering what happens to Senketsu in the end, his absence in the song hits even harder.

The focus then shifts away from Ragyo, but Kill la Kill ain’t at all done with building the audience up yet. As the scene moves to the following day, viewers are met with quick, close-up shots of Uzu’s note to Ryuko, timed right to the beat of “Blumenkranz.” Uzu wants to duel, and we soon get to see his full request in an engaging low-angle shot where Ryuko looks up to this sign looming over her. The weight and gravity of the situation is effectively conveyed: the smooth transition from Ragyo to here, as well as the music and shot composition, let us know in no indirect terms that this fight isn’t something to be brushed off. Uzu’s duel is a big deal, and it’s very much connected to Ragyo’s expansive empire.
And the tension just keeps growing. Ryuko’s reaction to Uzu’s note is presented with a dramatic canted, high-angle shot. The camera—which is just slightly tilted—peers down at both Ryuko and the sign, communicating a sense of danger and unease. Viewers already know that the upcoming battle is important, but here, we also understand that it’s not going to be easy.

March 2019
Kill la Kill the Game: IF is currently being featured at the 2019 Game Developers Conference that runs until March 22nd in San Francisco, and a flurry of new gameplay videos are now available for viewing. Notably, these videos feature full English subtitles for the character dialogue for the first time since EVO 2018 last year and never-before-seen stages, such as what seems to be the Fiber Castle in the Kiryuin Manor.

April 2019
I mean, Kill la Kill ended over five years ago now. There’s been fairly minimal new content ever since—an OVA in September of 2014, a few pieces of merchandise here and there, a small crossover with Grand Summoners last year. And then, not even 11 months ago, out of seemingly nowhere, there was confirmation for a full-blown Kill la Kill video game. That we now know will be released in just 14 weeks!
Lots of jokes were made about the announcement for a game so many years after the series finale, but, like, seriously, as a longtime Kill la Kill fan, it’s hard to wrap my head around. Ever since the show ended, I’ve dedicated over half a million words to writing about it, spent tens of thousands of yen on books and Blu-rays and CDs, devoted nearly 60 GB to my own GIFs and edits. I’ve loved this thing to death. I’ve always found more and more that I want to write and create from this series, but I never really imagined nor expected that we’d ever get much more official content from the original creators themselves. And now we are getting so much more, and???

Kiznaiver: Oh, I was so excited to love this show! I was lucky enough to see an advanced screening of the first two episodes, and I was totally hooked. It was drop-dead gorgeous—and probably the prettiest series Trigger has ever put out—and I was very intrigued by the plot and characters. I remember just coming back to my hotel room at like 3:00 am after the premiere, utterly filled with excitement. I mean, Kiznaiver  was directed by Hiroshi Kobayashi, the episode director behind the two episodes that got me hooked on Kill la Kill (episodes 5 and 18)!
But… my excitement quickly died. The story tried to develop way too many characters in way too little time, and I never enjoyed the romantic pairing of Katsuhira and Noriko, finding it shallow, undeveloped, and nonsensical (in a bad way), which… kind of ruins a lot of the series when that’s arguably the heart of the whole thing.
Kiznaiver is still super, super pretty, though. That last episode’s animation got me shook.

June 2019
I do recognize that many, many matters do not warrant conversation. I do recognize that the phrase “I’m just trying to have a conversation” can be—and has been—utilized as a means of directing criticism away from inflammatory, unacceptable, inhumane remarks. I in no way feel that hateful, discriminatory comments should be promoted.
Simultaneously, however, “conversation” should not automatically be a dirty word in the field of analyzing and seriously engaging with fiction, and thoughtful reactions should be supported and striven for. Nothing in fiction is ever black and white. There are so many nuances and complexities to the storybook realities of our media. I want commentators and critics of fiction to be passionate about listening, considering, and rethinking those nuances and complexities. Isn’t that why we do this work at all? To share our own point of view and open ourselves up to others?

July 2019
Initially, I was really bummed by this lack of development. But as I thought about things more, I… didn’t mind so much. If this dream or universe or whatever is something that Satsuki “experiences” before the events of the anime, of course she won’t grow as a character here. Maybe this game is kind of the Kill la Kill prequel I’ve been begging for for over half a decade.
And as much as I didn’t get anything, I thought the ending bits between Ryuko and Satsuki were so good.
Like, I suppose Ryuko’s absorbing the Life Fibers or something?? But wow, pretty.
And the part where they talk before Satsuki disappears? That’s my kinda anime bullshit. It’s the kinda anime bullshit I wanted from the OVA between Ryuko and Senketsu.

That book, Log. 2, is a fan doujin from Kotaro Nakamori, who worked as an animator and animation director in Kill la Kill. There’s a bunch of assorted fanart in there, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Nakamori is a fan of Urusei Yatsura and wanted to make a little crossover between that series and Kill la Kill.
Personally, though, as someone not too familiar with Urusei Yatsura, I kinda just saw the image as oni-Satsuki (with oni being demon/ogre-like creatures in Japanese folklore). Oni are traditionally depicted wearing tiger skin loincloths, and Lum herself is definitely basically a space oni. So, I saw the cover and got super excited about oni-Satsuki because I love oni a lot, haha.
Fun fact: character designer Sushio has also drawn Kill la Kill characters as oni for setsubun, a celebration that’s held on the last day of winter (February 3rd). During setsubun, you might see folks dressed up like oni—who get beans thrown at them in an effort to bring in good luck and chase naughty demons away.

Though I don’t see it much anymore, I remember lots of comparisons between Ragyo and the villains of Saturday morning cartoons back in the day. She was described as a generic, two-dimensional “evilz for the sake of evilz” baddie and criticized for her simplicity.
And though I did admittedly agree to an extent—I craved a lot more depth and insight, particularly in regards to her haunting line about “still having something of a human heart” whilst brutally attacking her own daughter in the final episode—I also found Ragyo to be a remarkably compelling, powerful, and horrifying villain even without tons of backstory and explanation. Perhaps my write-up on her first scene in episode 6 best details why; this woman has such a presence, and the visual language of the series amplifies that presence spectacularly. Ragyo’s intimidating and scary without the audience even needing to know anything about her.
And… I’d say that’s a good villain. That’s exactly what a villain should do.

And, though there are no visuals, so I can’t be sure if it’s an “Ocean of Light” or not, the fourth Drama CD also has the same kinda deal happening. In the CD—which takes place immediately after Ryuko learns the truth of her origins—Ryuko’s pain manifests as an explosion of light that knocks both her and Senketsu unconscious and pushes Senketsu away from her. The sound effect here is familiar, and I’m personally convinced that this is another “Ocean of Light” moment.
Which brings me to the “light” part of the terminology. Light is often associated with good, yes, but light is also associated with heat, and heat is associated with pain. In the Drama CD, Ryuko’s light is so hot that Nui even remarks that Senketsu “almost burned” from it, and when Mako embraces Ryuko after swimming through her “Ocean of Light” in episode 12, Ryuko’s touch scorches Mako’s skin.
I’ve already written an essay on the symbolic and narrative use of fire, warmth, and heat in Kill la Kill (that you should totally read because it’s actually maybe Kinda Good, Maybe), and relating to that, I see the “Ocean of Light” as a physical representation of Ryuko’s fiery spirit. That fire can be used for good, and that fire can also be painful, but no matter what, that fire is a part of Ryuko.

November 2019
She looks around her cottage. Her eyes find the walls and the furnishings. Her eyes find the scratched floors and stained wood. She does not voice it to the once-emperor, but she had never been able to remove the stains from the attack. Her son's blood has painted the brown wood red. It is a reminder of what she cannot remember. It is a reminder of the past she has forgotten.
“This home feels so desperately lonely,” she admits. “I do not know who is missing. But it is not complete.”
The man is quiet. He did not expect to find himself feeling sympathy for the woman's plight. Perhaps she is a fool, to have given her heart to a demon. But kindness ought not be punished, he thinks. Or has he grown so cold that he believes it should be?

🏀 Michiru and Shirou’s relationship may be the focus, but Nakashima emphasizes that Michiru’s relationship with Nazuna is also involved in the story in a big way.
🏀 Nakashima stresses the importance of depicting teen girls realistically. Two women screenwriters are on board: Kimiko Ueno and Nanami Higuchi. Both wrote for Little Witch Academia. Ueno also wrote for Space Patrol Luluco, and Higuchi was behind the production reports in Trigger Magazine (and, interestingly, wrote the script for the anime adaptation of BEASTARS).
🏀In regards to Michiru and Nazuna’s relationship, producer Naoko Tsutsumi (also an animation producer for Kiznaiver and Little Witch Academia) provides input as well. Nakashima says that they greatly value and take to heart the opinions of the women creators.

I have attempted to keep my contempt for Kingdom Hearts III to a minimum. However, it has come to my attention that there are several jokes being passed around about how mean and ineffectual Yen Sid is as a teacher. I’m not demanding everyone change their tune right now and like Yen Sid. He’s not for everyone. But I went through a journey over the course of this series going from disliking him to flat-out loving him, and it really dismays me that I can pinpoint why everyone thought he was so bad in III and it, to use a phrase that has almost lost meaning, “doesn’t exist in a vacuum.”
Historically, Yen Sid has been a punching bag for this fandom. I know. I was there. Doing some of the punching. The problem was we were given Organization XIII and weren’t really sure what to do with them. For one, if you didn’t play CoM in between 1 and II (and not having SEEN Marluxia trying to chess-game everyone to their deaths), which was my story, you got Naminé saying “Good or bad, I cannot say” followed almost immediately by Yen Sid saying that though the Organization would pretend to have emotions , it was a ruse. I can’t pinpoint exactly why the Organization XIII fandom happened (I’m not sure it was so simple as “They’re hot”), but if it was anything like my case, I think it stems deep down from seeing these cool character designs and quirks on a bunch of VILLAINS and feeling the pull of the good/bad binary that suggests you can’t enjoy them as villains and must make them redeemable enough to make fan content of. This is starting to veer into a whole other essay, so I’ll cut it off here - I’ll just say if you know me, you know I figured out that “fun team for fan content” and “moral role models” are not necessarily symbiotic. ANYWAY. ABOUT YEN SID. The other thing I think we have to remember is that at the time, the only people who understood how Nobodies felt were the Nobodies. Ansem the Wise also thought they were emotionless evil. We found out in DDD, whether or not that was planned in advance, that Xemnas basically conditioned them to think of themselves that way. 358/2 Days is so poignant in its depiction of the Sea Salt Trio because you see how the rest have been groomed to be divided and not care about friendship or emotions. So in a way, the Organization defense squad was right, and I think that ended up being kind of the point - Yen Sid was telling us all we knew about this “mysterious entity” that didn’t interact with humanity, and that arc was concluded through Ansem realizing he should’ve treated Roxas like a human person. So that clears away KHII Yen Sid.
BBS Yen Sid was where I really grew to love him as a character. He understands that Terra and Ven need to follow their hearts, and in their individual visits, he basically tells them “Eraqus would not like this, but I know it’s important to you and I trust you, so I’m going to look the other way.” When Aqua visits him, you see a completely new side of him. It always hurts me so much when he has to tell Aqua that Xehanort and Terra have murdered Eraqus. Because he pauses a bit before saying Xehanort’s name. That man was his friend, and all this time, he was hoping there was redeemability in him. (Perhaps contributing to him being later jaded toward Xemnas’ associates, hmm?) But he pauses even longer before saying Terra’s name, and I sincerely believe this is because he recognizes the pain he feels at knowing Xehanort isn’t the person he thought he was...and even more than not wanting to feel it, he doesn’t want Aqua to feel that way about Terra. Yet he knows in the end she deserves the truth. Also, BBS kind of acts “fix fic” toward Fantasia itself, of all things. When I took my stance on KHII Yen Sid, this made me retroactively look at Fantasia and go “What a jerk in how he treats Mickey.” Which really isn’t the case at all - he’s tough but fair, and Mickey kinda BROUGHT THE WATERY APOCALYPSE DOWN UPON HIS LABORATORY. But the end credits scene of Yen Sid and Mickey deliberately subverts Fantasia. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice has Yen Sid strip Mickey of the hat, which Mickey doesn’t want to give up. BBS ends on the note of Mickey feeling that, since he couldn’t save his friends, he didn’t deserve the Keyblade (which is the same pattern as Yen Sid’s hat) anymore, and he tried to give it up. Yen Sid instead hands it BACK to him encouragingly, and this is likely where he awarded Mickey mastery. It takes a scene where we’re used to him punishing the naughty trickster and flips it on its head - when Mickey himself thinks he’s finally gone too far and nothing but a failure, Yen Sid wants him to keep dreaming, keep growing, keep learning.
DDD! Yen Sid tests Riku and Sora for Mastery, and ultimately encourages Riku to self-actualize! He assures Riku it’s okay to mix Light and Dark, which is almost UNHEARD of in this universe! He reaches out to Kairi, he allows Lea a second chance - he’s on top of it all!
So let’s get into KHIII. People have said Yen Sid berates Sora too much. And I’m not saying that’s not true. People have said it’s stupid that Yen Sid doesn’t actually act like a “teacher” or introduce a lot of the mechanics from BBS he would’ve known about, like armor or skimmers. And it kind of is. But I think it’s the old KHII sourness that’s bleeding into this interpretation, because honestly...this is not a Yen Sid problem.
This problem affects the characterization of pretty much every main cast member in KHIII.
Sora is now more focused on his own failings than trying to help others (please compare his reaction to Rapunzel to his reaction to Quasimodo back in DDD to see how selfish he’s become). Riku has almost nothing to say or do. Kairi has been watered down - no sense of humor or sass or initiative, to say nothing of the great offensive death scene. Aqua’s time in the Realm of Darkness seems to have had no noticeable effect on her until Re:Mind retroactively patched it in, and her solitude wasn’t explored. Ventus gets barely anything to do or say beyond being a yes-man. The conflict between the Wayfinder Trio? Swept under the rug. Same with Sea Salt, though at least Axel, Roxas, and Xion all feel like themselves, at least. Vexen, whose primary character trait was “grump who hates everyone,” decides midgame that he is no longer grumpy and does not hate everyone. Ansem, Seeker of Darkness? Don’t even get me started; there is no similarity between this ominous harbinger of Master Xehanort’s will and the mad scientist nihilist from KH1. Master Xehanort himself? Has magically gone from “I must explore the Darkness to see what answers of the universe will be revealed when Kingdom Hearts comes, despite the Light acting as a policing force I find unfair” (BBS) to “I hate that everyone acts like a good person but it’s so fake. I want to remake the world and rule over it to make it better” (KHIII). Meanwhile, Eraqus, whose arc centered around fanaticism taken to an extreme that led him to attack his own adoptive child, is now the voice of forgiveness, acting as forgiveness for Xehanort when it was Eraqus’ lack of forgiveness for any slight that kicked off the problem in the first place. I personally love Ienzo as he is, probably because he’s more sincerely happy now and the seeds were planted in DDD for this characterization, but if you add it up, he’s very jarringly different than the Zexion we were used to.
Yen Sid is a victim of the same character assassination that hit pretty much EVERYONE else in this game. Why is he a bad teacher? Because the guy in charge of writing his dialogue didn’t bother to line it up with BBS or DDD for consistency. Why didn’t he show the characters how to do anything worth anything? Because, again, the designers of III decided to switch the BBS mechanics for Attraction Flows and Formchanges without taking lore and continuity into consideration (and for the record, I love Attraction Flows and Formchanges, but we couldn’t have everything, and we need to be aware of the fact that game design dictates a lot of the story; the reason Sora is missing so much power in the first place is because we need to justify starting the game at level 1). At the very least, they allowed Yen Sid to actually travel to the Keyblade Graveyard to rescue his charges when everyone had a betting pool on him “Sitting in his chair doing nothing” during the end times. And that probably involved a lot of haggling over licensing of Fantasia. They at least wanted to show him caring about the others to that degree.
Like I said, Yen Sid isn’t for everyone. If you don’t like him because you just don’t like him, fine. I didn’t come here to try and change everyone’s mind. But I just think it’s a little bit unfair to harp on how much of a “bad teacher” he is in III when this lines up with none of his prior characterization, but lines up perfectly with how much the rest of the cast is bad everything-else.
