The Palestine Sunbird Persists
The Palestine sunbird, also known as the orange-tufted sunbird (Cinnyris osea) is the national bird of Palestine, and often seen as a symbol of resistance and hope. This species occurs in dry climates, particularly desert, scrubland, and savannahs, but can also be found in orchards and gardens where flowers are abundant. In addition to the Levant, C. osea occurs throughout the southwest cost of Saudia Arabia and the coasts of Yemen and Oman in the south.
C. osea is a small bird, 8 to 12 cm (3.1-4.7 in) long with a wingspan of only 14 to 16 cm (5.5-6.2 in). Males weigh on average 7.6 g (0.26 oz) and females are slightly smaller, at about 6.8 g (0.24 oz). Males are quite easy to identify due to their striking plumage; their feathers are iridescent, appearing dark until they shimmer glossy blue or green, with orange tufts at the side of the breast. In contrast females are fairly drab; grey-brown with a lighter underside. The beaks of the Palestine sunbird are also noted for their distinctively long and curved, which they have developed to efficiently feed on nectar.
Although not directly part of the hummingbird family, the Palestine sunbird shares many similarities with the group. Its diet consists of nectar, and is supplemented with insects. Their tongues are long, and brush-like, and the shape of their beak allows them to reach down to the base of the flower. For flowers that are , they will use their sharp beaks to pierce the side and access the nectar directly. All this is done at very high speeds, but unlike hummingbirds the Palestine sunbird cannot hover in place, and must land in order to feed. Because of their primary reliance on nectar, the orange-tufted sunbird is an important pollinator in its native region. Adults are rarely predated upon, but eggs and young are often targets for lizards, snakes, and birds of prey.
Reproduction begins in June, and continues through October. Males establish and defend territories, and court females by singing to attract a potential mate, then chasing her until she perches to signal her acceptance. Following the pairing, the two construct a purse-like nest, sometimes with a porch-like structure, that hangs from a branch. In this nest, 1-2 eggs are laid, and are incubated primarily by the female, while the male provides her food. The eggs take 13 to 14 days to hatch, and chicks are taken care of by both parents for an additional 14 to 21 days. Individuals can live up to 5 years in the wild.
Conservation status: The Palestine sunbird has a large range and population, and is thus considered Least Concern by the IUCN. Its primary threat is habitat loss due to agriculture and urban development.
If you send me proof that you’ve made a donation to UNRWA or another organization benefiting Palestinians, I’ll make art of any animal of your choosing.
Remember, the donation can be in any amount– every dollar counts!

Evonie doesn’t mind if she gets a bit dirty when accomplishing a task but she makes sure that she still looks presentable and cleans up to maintain her image as a dorm leader.
She is decently sociable but it is clear that there is a wall she puts up. If she is with people she can be vulnerable around, she doesn’t hold back on what her opinion is to an extent. Those close to her know that she will support her friends throughout their issues.
She has a mild level of patience; she can tolerate small mistakes but if the mistakes keep repeating then she might have to consult the person to see if there is anything wrong.
But if it is anything like Allison does, she definitely won’t tolerate that will sternly reprimand them. Her patience reaching its limit is rather rare, but when it happens then expect yelling and spells being thrown about.
Evonie is good at multitasking, she can hold a full conversation even if she is not looking at what she is doing to face the person she is speaking to. It’s something she developed at home.
She is very competitive, it is something she developed with her dads, and she loved the feeling of being victorious. So, if she ever loses, she is determined to come up with ways to win next time. It may get irritating to lose but she is a good sport, unless she finds out the opponent is cheating, then she won’t tolerate that.
Although she is aware of people and their behavior, she doesn’t always have an accurate conclusion of what the person would do and she would be a bit suspicious but without any concrete evidence she will drop her assumptions and leave it alone.
She makes sure she has proper table manners when eating, but if she is in private, she will slouch and eat to her own standards of comfort, she still keeps in mind of any crumbs that might fall.
Like Snow White, she has a fear of anything scary. She dislikes going to dark places by herself and if she sees something out of the corner of her eye then she will turn her head so fast to make sure nothing was there. She loses her composure and will activate fight or flight mode on instinct.
Hometown: Town of Orchard Fields
Family Life
Evonie was adopted by Rote and Schnee Apfel who became her parental figures. Her birthmother gave birth to her but knows that her illness will be detrimental for Evonie’s future. She contacts the Apfel couple who were acquaintances of hers and asked them to adopt Evonie.
The couple agrees and they raised Evonie in the Town of Orchard Fields. The house is built near a border with a large forest with a lot of wildlife and plants, it’s like a big backyard for her to explore.
Rote was the closest acquaintance of Evonie’s birthmother and it was he who made the decision to adopt the girl. Schnee teases him how during the first few years of raising a baby he went overboard in baby-proofing the house that they had so many pillows and Styrofoam than they know what to do with.
Evonie grew up as a polite girl, though she always had this curiosity to anything she thought might be a cute animal. Schnee made sure to teach her about the safety precautions when approaching a wild animal after he saw his daughter come home with a boar.
Though he doesn’t cook as much as Rote, he does know one recipe that he always taught Evonie, it was apple desserts that were pulled from his great grandmother’s cookbook. He’s kept that cookbook with him and hopes to one day pass it down to Evonie. Evonie’s favorite is the apple dumplings made by Schnee, she can’t get enough of it.
Childhood Memories
At first, Evonie was enjoying her time at school because everyone was very friendly to her. Of course, she is kind to them back to the point where she didn’t want to disappoint them. Until she found the outcast kid that the kids make fun of because of their appearance.
Evonie builds up courage to defend them and befriend the outcast. Which she thought was the right thing to do, at first, the outcast and Evonie got along and they were grateful for their help.
It wasn’t until the other kids cornered them and told the outcast how Evonie was just being nice because they were pitiful and how dare they think they’re equal to Evonie. This made them bitter and slowly drift apart from Evonie who had no clue what was going on.
When she heard news of her friend moving away, she wanted to say goodbye but when she managed to face them, the outcast hurled blame at her for their suffering. Telling her how she has it easy because she’ pretty and she thinks she’s so great but she was arrogant.
Evonie was silent but tears were flowing down her face, both of their parents heard the commotion and awkwardly bid farewell, they didn’t know what was wrong because they thought they got along well.
After that friend left, Evonie took what they said to heart and soon she started to realize how people kept complimenting her appearance instead of her skills. The people who admired her didn’t care about her at all, they just wanted to feel like they’re the popular clique by including Evonie. The ones who didn’t made it clear that they think she’s got it easy because of her looks.
This led Evonie to change her perspective, she didn’t wear pretty dresses unless it was necessary but she kept it simple and didn’t go all out. She didn’t socialize as much with people and often spent her days helping out at home or exploring the forest.
She preferred the company of animals more than people, knowing they care more about her compassion rather than her appearance.
The words of her ex-friend still linger her to this day, she would internally get annoyed whenever someone says she’s better suited for something else or disregards her effort.
Evonie is a 3rd Year Pommeneige student and is the current dorm leader.
Evonie is a model student, always makes sure to be efficient and ensure her dorm students wouldn’t fall behind by offering to help them in their studies to the best of her abilities. When she takes a break, it would be either a walk through the woods or just snacking on anything she craves.
The dorm students at first were unsure of s dorm leader who doesn’t quite portray the innocence of the Princess of the Dwarves, but they find her diligence and mature aura appealing and sometimes compares her to a prince. They nicknamed her the “Apple Knight”.
Evonie excels more when it comes to sports, especially fencing. Her Papa taught her and often sparred with her when he has time. Cooking is also another strong point in her education besides general subjects.
Regarding magic, she is more combat focused and often likes to physically incorporate spells with her movement like swinging a sword.
She thought that most students in DCA would be like the ones back home, only caring about appearances but she finds out that there are a lot of different girls here. She feels at ease to know that she can at least lift the weight on her shoulders.
Somewhere down the line, she developed this second persona to fully explore her wild side. Evonie wanted to feel free without having to think twice about her image. So, she set up a persona to really let herself go.
She showed up as a mystery idol once and it all developed from there. People have called her persona “The Masked Maiden” and she takes great measure to make sure no one can figure out her identity. So much so that she joined the theater club to improve her façade.
Evonie’s grades are fairly high, though she enjoys PE more because their coach has thrilling obstacle courses that really spark her motivation. Evonie is most skilled at fencing compared to the rest of the exercises.
School Relationships
Evonie is more drawn to befriend girls who can light up the competitive fire in her as well as genuinely enjoying her company. Vidya and Jinlong became her rivals due to their athleticism and how they always do things their way. Evonie admires them for wanting to be true to themselves so she follows their example.
Ella is another close friend of Evonie, though she barely remembers meeting Ella. Ella remembers Evonie as the Glaciel family went to Orchard Fields for a vacation and she remembers this pretty girl with dark hair who was nice enough to show her around the stalls and offer her some apple tarts. Though Ella seems like someone Evonie wouldn’t befriend at first, the girl’s kindness won her over.
They got even closer when Ella confided about her previous stepmother who left scars on her, mentally and physically. Evonie has not experienced that kind of abuse but she understands when Ella worries about appearance and wanting to hide what bothered them. She tends to shield Ella from anything bothering her out of habit.
Allison was a pain in the neck for Evonie, she can’t find common ground with the girl at all! She can somewhat understand not wanting to do etiquette but it’s still a class requirement. Evonie thinks she’s too reckless while Allison thinks Evonie is too hung up on maintaining an image. The only time those two can agree on something is through cooking, thought that ends quickly when Allison slips any raw fruit other than apples into her mouth.
Perrine and Evonie often share recipes and both found a common ground in sharing family traditions learned from past generations. Though Evonie can’t decide whether to be impressed or revolted when Perrine makes that weird food combination and eats it like it was 5 star.
Evonie’s relationship with Applette, her dorm fairy, is akin to her seeking comfort in the little creature. Applette’s form is derived from Evonie’s desire to feel genuine connections with other people. Applette is always sweet and kind, a contrast with Evonie’s cool and somewhat stern personality.
The fairy is there to be sympathetic as well as paint Evonie as a reliable sister figure to the dorm students.
Highness
Highness is a purple peacock that was given to Evonie when Schnee found an abandoned egg in the forest but there was no parent to be found. Highness was rather clingy as a chick, always looking for Evonie and crying whenever she went to school.
But Evonie still can’t understand how his attitude changed when he grew up, she guessed it might have been puberty that made him this way. She remembered using up all her saved money to buy him all those pricey bird products… it was definitely when she put too much effort into his care that he became this way.
Highness is arrogant and would stomp on anyone that he doesn’t deem worthy to get close to his personal space. Not even Evonie was spared but he does it less often when the threat of being sent to the vet was used.
Highness has his own personal trunk full of jewelry that he has Evonie dress him with, she doesn’t tell him that they’re mostly made from glass by Ella. There was no way that Evonie could afford such expensive jewelry so imitations are good enough as long as he doesn’t know.
Her unique magic is called, “Friends of the Forest”. The unique magic developed when Evonie felt awful after the confrontation with the ex-friend that she made the mistake of running into the forest during a rainstorm. She ended up crying under a hollow log from how hurt and scared she was.
Remembering the lullaby her dad often sang to her when she was scared, she quietly hummed the song unaware that the animals in the forest gathered around to comfort her. She was shocked at first to see so many animals around her but they brought her the comfort she needed until her parents found her.
Evonie often did this in private because it felt like her sanctuary if she ever gets stressed. She’s developed a soft spot for animals, Highness is a complicated case though.
She also excels in using fire magic due to her living in the woods and her family often having to camp out on special occasions. She can also use this offensively during matches by either setting projectiles or a dome trap.
Rote Apfel
Rote Apfel is called, “Dad” by Evonie and he has red hair and a large build that may seem intimidating but he is actually quite sweet and efficient in several handiwork around the household. Rote is only muscular because he did a lot of errands before which included chopping wood and heavy lifting.
He runs an animal sanctuary that cares for injured or abandoned animals. Quite a few of them have been adopted as family pets so it is expected to find a few animals lounging in their household.
Rote can’t help himself, all of the animals seem so cute to him, and he wished he had a bigger house to adopt them all. Schnee had to remind him that there is a limit to how many animals they can keep in the house.
Rote taught Evonie a lot of life hacks and tips on easy fixes on problems that usually need professionals to fix.
He is such a protective papa bear and often times his pouting face looks so intimidating without even meaning to. He is the empath that contrasts with Schnee’s parenting style.
Schnee Apfel
Schnee Apfel is called, “Papa” by Evonie and he has white hair and a slim build but he is very athletic with good reflexes. At first glance, he doesn’t seem intimidating due to his beautiful face but the moment he gets angry is when he becomes terrifying.
It comes with his job as a park ranger, he works in the town’s tourist park. There are times when he was called to handle a rampaging animal that might harm people nearby. But there are also entitled bastards or people with barely a brain cell who get themselves into trouble at the park.
Schnee doesn’t tolerate any nonsense in the park and is often called to handle the problematic visitors.
Schnee was the strict parent but he doesn’t go overboard in discipline. Most of the punishments when Evonie did something wrong was just household chores while he explains to her why it was wrong. He makes sure to properly teach her without being too harsh as he knows that children will be children.
He is the tough love kind of father which contrasts Rote’s parenting style.
Character’s name derives from “Ebony” with a few letter changes while her last name, “Apfel” is the German word for Apple.
Evonie can’t eat any other fruit raw besides apples, it’s still a mystery to her as to why. They’re fine when it comes to desserts or even jam but the raw product never fails to make her dislike it.
Despite her confidence, she actually can’t stand anything related to horror. She will shriek and hide away.
Her early concept was supposed to be a more confident and badass, Snow White. Her first two designs looked too similar to Weiss Schnee from RWBY, so she was redesigned.

"Numerous insect pests attack apple trees throughout the growing season. The codling moth (CM), Cydia pomonella, Linneaus 1758 (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) and the rosy apple aphid (RAA) Dysaphis plantaginea, Passerini 1860 (Hemiptera: Aphididae) are the major insect pests, causing high economic losses in apple production.
We focused on parasitoid wasps and hoverflies, two groups that include many CM and RAA natural enemies. Several parasitoid species feed on codling moth (CM) at different stages of its development, such as Ascogaster quadridentata Wesmael (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Pristomerus vulnerator Panzer (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) or Trichomma enecator Rossi (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) (Mills, 2005). Other parasitoid species such as Aphidius spp.and Ephedrus spp. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) attack the rosy apple aphid (RAA) (Dib et al., 2010; Rodríguez-Gasol et al., 2019)."

Our Journey Toward a Waste-Free World | One Story at a time!
Nestled in the tranquil Rupin Ranges of Uttarkashi district, Doni is a picturesque village that echoes the serenity of the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary. Located 29 km from Mori and 195 km from Uttarkashi, this village, perched at an elevation of 6,000 feet, is renowned for its rich cultural tapestry. Doni thrives on apple orchards, traditional farming, and vibrant festivals like Bishu Mela, Posh, and Jagra. However, beneath its idyllic charm, Doni faced a mounting ecological crisis—Solid Waste Management.
Life Before Change: A Village Struggles with Plastic Waste
Until 2021, Doni grappled with improper waste disposal, a problem compounded by the growing prevalence of plastic waste. Discarded litter and organic refuse were either burned or dumped carelessly, polluting the environment and endangering health. Dustbins, when available, were often misused for household storage rather than waste disposal.
During the harsh winter months, burning waste became a common practice, contributing to plastic pollution and respiratory illnesses. Traditional clean-up drives held during festivals like Bishu Mela offered temporary relief but failed to address the root of the problem. The lack of waste management policies in the Gram Panchayat Development Plan left the community unequipped to tackle the growing environmental crisis.
Grandma, a wise elder of the village, often voiced her concerns: “Our mountains and health are deteriorating because of this waste. Action is needed now to secure a better future.”
The Turning Point: Waste Warriors Step In
In 2021, hope arrived in the form of Waste Warriors, a nonprofit organization specializing in sustainability and waste management. They embarked on a transformative journey to address Doni’s waste crisis.
Their intervention began with a comprehensive baseline survey to understand the village's waste management landscape. Recognizing the importance of local leadership, Waste Warriors partnered with Gram Pradhan Ankush and appointed Devraj Saundan as a Community Mobilizer (CM). Together, they laid the foundation for change through education and community engagement.
Waste Warriors initiated door-to-door awareness campaigns, emphasizing the detrimental effects of plastic pollution and the need for waste segregation. Households were provided sacks instead of dustbins to ensure proper waste storage, avoiding misuse. Two Safai Sathis (waste collectors), Attar Lal and Sundas, were trained to handle waste collection and segregation while fostering community participation.
In June 2021, the first waste collection drive marked a significant milestone. The Panchayat allocated land for a “Waste Bank” to store dry waste before transferring it to a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Dehradun. Over eight months, 1,200 kg of dry waste from 120 households was collected, setting the stage for a sustainable waste collection service.
Life After Change: A Clean and Conscious Doni
Three years later, Doni has emerged as a shining example of sustainability and responsible Solid Waste Management. The transformation is evident in the village’s cleaner surroundings and the community's renewed commitment to preserving its environment.
Key Achievements:
Community Participation: Today, 95% of households actively participate in waste segregation and contribute their waste to the Waste Bank. Burning waste is a thing of the past, even during collection delays.
Youth Leadership: The Young Warriors Club, comprising 30 enthusiastic children, leads by example. Through rallies and clean-up drives, they inspire their peers to adopt environmentally conscious habits.
Improved Infrastructure: Nine steel dustbins have been strategically installed in public spaces, supported by vibrant murals and signboards that promote cleanliness and waste segregation.
Educational Engagement: Schools and colleges actively participate in Swachhta (cleanliness) campaigns, instilling environmental responsibility in students.
Waste Management Impact: Between July 2021 and June 2024, Doni successfully collected nine tons of dry waste. This significant achievement highlights the community’s efforts to combat plastic pollution and reduce its environmental footprint.
Leadership and Collaboration: Keys to Success
The Gram Pradhan played a pivotal role in Doni’s transformation. His active support for Waste Warriors’ initiatives fostered trust and encouraged community participation. The allocation of land for the Waste Bank and financial backing for the Safai Sathis underscored his commitment to sustainability.
Safai Sathis, meanwhile, have become local heroes, demonstrating the power of consistent effort and dedication. Their work has not only ensured effective waste collection services but also inspired a sense of pride and ownership among villagers.
Grandma’s Message: A Lesson in Sustainability
Grandma often compares waste segregation to sorting apples—a relatable analogy for a community rooted in agriculture. Her heartfelt message resonates deeply: “Water, forest, my soil, now it’s in your hands. If you take care today, it will be with you tomorrow.”
Her words reflect the urgency for collective action, urging the community to prioritize environmental preservation for future generations.
Doni: A Model for Rural Sustainability
Doni’s success story demonstrates how grassroots initiatives can transform challenges into opportunities. By blending traditional wisdom with modern waste management practices, the village has set an inspiring example for neighboring communities.
The collaboration between Waste Warriors, local leaders, and villagers showcases the immense potential of community-driven change. Doni’s journey emphasizes the importance of integrating Solid Waste Management into rural development strategies, highlighting that even the most remote villages can overcome environmental challenges with determination and the right support.
The Ripple Effect: Inspiring Change Beyond Doni
Doni’s story offers valuable lessons for other rural communities facing similar challenges. It underscores the importance of awareness, education, and collaboration in addressing plastic pollution and promoting sustainable practices.
As Doni continues to thrive, it serves as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of rural communities. With sustained efforts, it is possible to pave the way for a cleaner, greener future—not just for Doni, but for countless villages across India.
Conclusion
The transformation of Doni village is more than a success story; it’s a call to action. Addressing plastic waste and ensuring effective waste collection services are critical steps toward achieving environmental sustainability.
By learning from Doni’s experience, communities worldwide can take a step closer to a future free from plastic pollution, where both nature and livelihoods can flourish harmoniously.

Anthony Gormley - sculpture for Derry
https://publicart.ie/main/directory/directory/view/sculpture-for-derry-walls/3c736946413f2ecd4b72c5031422e010/
In 1977, Jonathan Harvey co-founded TSW-Television South West (the ITV franchise holder for South West England) and worked as their Arts Consultant until the end of the company’s franchise in 1992. Through his work as Arts Consultant to TSW, alongside Tony Foster and James Lingwood, Harvey developed and organised a number of TSWA projects, including the two groundbreaking public art projects, TSWA 3D (1987) and TSWA’s Four Cities Projects (1990). The 1987 TSWA 3D project commissioned major temporary site-specific works throughout the UK, including Gormley’s ‘Sculpture for Derry Walls’, as well as artworks by other artists including Edward Allington, Hannah Collins, Judith Goddard, Ron Haselden, Sharon Kivland, Holly Warburton, Kate Whiteford, Richard Wilson and George Wyllie
‘Sculpture for Derry Walls’ (1987) was a three-part sculpture placed in three particular locations along the city’s seventeenth century fortified walls: on the east overlooking the Foyle River, over the Bogside by the remains of the Walker Monument and on the Bastion overlooking the Fountain Estate.
Each sculpture consisted of two identical cast-iron figures joined back-to-back (each 196 x 193 x 54 cm). They held a cruciform pose and were placed in such a way that one faced into the walled city, while the other was outward-looking. It has been said that the sculptures represented Derry's two dominant religious communities, turning away from each other, but paradoxically joined as one body, separated by their religious, cultural and political differences, but united in their Christianity and their shared location.

Description:
When you first arrive at your farmstead in Emerald Acres, B and their 5-year-old daughter Sunny are the first to welcome you with open arms and a basket of blueberry muffins. B seems like an exceptionally kind and calm soul right at first glance, though you quickly notice their daughter doesn’t appear to have inherited these qualities-- she is certainly wild and carefree in a way her parent isn’t. They seem happy enough with just the two of them, but both are always eager to make new friends. When it comes to romance, B is a little more hesitant, so if you want to win their heart, you need to come along well with their daughter and show them that you’re looking for a serious relationship.
B enjoys baking and cooking, painting, knitting and playing with their (many) cats. They appreciate people who are patient with their daughter and don’t hesitate to speak their mind openly.
Sunny likes weird bugs, the colour yellow, swimming in the river and funny animal hats. She appreciates it when adults listen to her constant blabbering and are interested in her secret book full of secrets.
Appearance:
Bunny: She has white, rosy skin, usually flushed cheeks and heart shaped hazel coloured eyes. Her hair is sandy blonde, wavy and reaches her collarbones and she likes to keep it free and pair it with floral headbands. Bunny is 179 cm or 5′10″ feet tall and her body is pear shaped with visible stomach rolls and stretch marks. Her most notable feature is her freckle-covered body and the mole the shape of a heart on top of her right eyebrow. Her default expression is looking at (something) curiously.
Bo: He has white, rosy skin, usually flushed cheeks and heart shaped hazel coloured eyes. His hair is sandy blond that he prefers to keep on a messy low bun against the back of his neck and he has full dark-blond beard that he keeps neat with regular trims. Bo is 179 cm or 5′10″ feet tall and he is big-boned and burly with a slightly round belly. His most notable feature is his freckle-covered body and the mole the shape of a heart on top of his right eyebrow. His default expression is looking at (something) curiously.
Both Bunny and Bo always seem to be wearing the same sun hat with a blue ribbon. She favours jean shorts, rain boots and self-knitted sweaters, while Bo usually wears full jeans, a flannel shirt and hiking boots.

Nightfall Grove and Dusky Orchard: What are your special talents?
Dusky Orchard: I dunno yet! I still haven't gotten my cutie mark! My family says I gotta wait.. Even Aunt Apple Bloom! And she helped MAKE the CMC! Doesn't she get it?! Anyways, I hope its magic, like my mom. (Twilight)
Nightfall Grove: Simple. Apples.
"Nightfall Grove received his CM when he made a special variety of apples, based on the idea of Zap Apples. Apples that have magical properties and are rare. He went on a journey to different apple homes and developed a special apple, Celestia's Golden. Like Zap Apples, they have a short availability and harvest time. They fill the consumer with warmth and a feeling of lightness. He works on the farm to help Sweet Apple Acres with their usual harvest, but when it is time for Celestia Golds, he spends all of his time on those."

Vertumnus and Pomona, Jean François Janinet, c. 1776, Cleveland Museum of Art: Prints
In 1774 Louis-Marin Bonnet developed yet another technical innovation: a printed gold leaf border. Janinet, who had been Bonnet's student, adopted this practice. However, because the use of gold leaf by printmakers was illegal (they were not among the trades officially allowed to use it), the two artists produced only about 20 prints with gold frames before they were caught by the authorities. In classical mythology, Pomona was a nymph who grew fruit but did not allow men to enter her orchard. Vertumnus, a handsome young man, disguised himself as an old woman to gain entry. After telling Pomona stories of love, he removed his disguise and won her hand. Size: Sheet: 33.3 x 26.5 cm (13 1/8 x 10 7/16 in.) Medium: Color wash-manner etching and engraving with applied gold leaf

Create a summary of theatrical styles: realism, naturalism, expressionism, post dramatic
Realism
Realism in the theatre was a general movement that began in the 19th-century theatre, around the 1870s, and remained present through much of the 20th century. Realism refers generally to any artistic or literary portrayal of life in a faithful, accurate manner, unclouded by false ideals, literary conventions, or misplaced aesthetic glorification and beautification of the world. It is a theory or tendency in writing to depict events in an attempt to reflect “as it actually is”. These conventions occur in the text, (set, costume, sound, and lighting) design, performance style, and narrative structure.
https://www.cusd80.com/cms/lib6/AZ01001175/Centricity/Domain/963/2nd%20Realism%20Movement%20in%20Drama.pdf
characters are believable, everyday types
costumes are authentic
stage settings (locations) and props are often indoors and believable
the ‘box set’ is normally used for realistic dramas on stage, consisting of three walls and an invisible ‘fourth wall’ facing the audience
settings for realistic plays are often bland (deliberately ordinary), dialogue is not heightened for effect, but that of everyday speech (vernacular)
The drama is typically psychologically driven, where the plot is secondary and primary focus is placed on the interior lives of characters, their motives, the reactions of others etc.
Realistic plays often see the protagonist (main character) rise up against the odds to assert him/herself against an injustice of some kind (eg. Nora in Ibsen’s A Doll’s House)
Realistic dramas quickly gained popularity because the everyday person in the audience could identify with the situations and characters on stage
Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen (A Doll’s House, Hedda Gabler) is considered the father of modern realism in the theatre
Naturalism
Naturalism is a movement in European drama and theatre that developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It refers to theatre that attempts to create a perfect illusion of reality through a range of dramatic and theatrical strategies: detailed, three-dimensional settings; everyday speech forms (prose over poetry); a secular world-view (no ghosts, spirits or gods intervening in the human action)
French novelist Zola, The three primary principles of naturalism are first, that the play should be realistic, and the result of a careful study of human behaviour and psychology. The characters should be flesh and blood; their motivations and actions should be grounded in their heredity and environment. The presentation of a naturalistic play, in terms of the setting and performances, should be realistic and not flamboyant or theatrical. The single setting of Miss Julie, for example, is a kitchen. Second, the conflicts in the play should be issues of meaningful, life-altering significance — not small or petty. And third, the play should be simple — not cluttered with complicated sub-plots or lengthy expositions
in terms of style, naturalism is an extreme or heightened form of realism
as a theatrical movement and performance style, naturalism was short-lived
stage time equals real time – eg. three hours in the theatre equals three hours for the characters in the world of the play
costumes, sets and props are historically accurate and very detailed, attempting to offer a photographic reproduction of reality (‘slice of life’)
as with realism, settings for naturalistic dramas are often bland and ordinary
naturalistic dramas normally follow rules set out by the Greek philosopher Aristotle, known as ‘the three unities’ (of time, place and action)
the action of the play takes place in a single location over the time frame of a single day
jumps in time and/or place between acts or scenes is not allowed
playwrights were influenced by naturalist manifestos written by French novelist and playwright Emile Zola in the preface to Therese Raquin (1867 novel, 1873 play) and Swedish playwright August Strindberg in the preface to Miss Julie (1888)
naturalism explores the concept of scientific determinism (spawning from Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution) – characters in the play are shaped by their circumstances and controlled by external forces such as hereditary or their social and economic environment
often characters in naturalistic plays are considered victims of their own circumstance and this is why they behave in certain ways (they are seen as helpless products of their environment)
characters are often working class/lower class (as opposed to the mostly middle class characters of realistic dramas)
naturalistic plays regularly explore sordid subject matter previously considered taboo on the stage in any serious manner (eg suicide, poverty, prostitution)
Famous naturalism plays:
Woyzeck (1837) by Georg Büchner
A Bitter Fate (1859) by Aleksey Pisemsky
A Doll's House (1879) by Henrik Ibsen
The Power of Darkness (1886) by Leo Tolstoy
The Father (1887) by August Strindberg
Miss Julie (1888) by August Strindberg
Creditors (1889) by August Strindberg
The Weavers (1892) by Gerhart Hauptmann
Drayman Henschel (1898) by Gerhart Hauptmann
Uncle Vanya (1898) by Anton Chekhov
The Cherry Orchard (1904) by Anton Chekhov
Expressionism:
Expressionism is a modernist movement in drama and theatre that developed in Europe (principally Germany) in the early decades of the 20th century
A style of painting, music, or drama in which the artist or writer seeks to express emotional experience rather than impressions of the external world. Expressionism is an artistic style in which the artist attempts to depict not objective reality but rather the subjective emotions and responses. Expressionists characteristically reject traditional ideas of beauty or harmony and use distortion, exaggeration, and other non-naturalistic devices in order to emphasize and express the inner world of emotion.
Post-dramatic theatre
Post-dramatic theatre focuses on producing an effect on the audience rather than the presentation of the text. Postdramatic theatre removes the deliberately written word from the center of the theatrical event.
It focuses on the relationship between the play and the audience rather than the relationship between the characters in the play
Makes us rethink the way we read and perform plays
Character and plot are no longer central elements where postdramatic theatre is concerned
Shows a dissatisfaction of the representation of the external world and structuring of time
Focuses on giving the audience a theatrical performance and is not restricted by the character and plot
There is a greater integration of the audience
Dr David Barnett says, "The stage becomes a generator of shared experiences rather than knowledge, and spectators are confronted with the question of how they deal with such phenomena".
The aristotelian device: plot, thought, character, spectacle, music and diction do not apply to postmodern theatre in the way they apply to ‘typical’ theatre.
The spectator must abandon or reshape this cultured way of judging theatre if they wish to find meaning in postdramatic theatre. This is because postdramatic theatre involves the deconstruction of some of these elements, namely character, plot and diction.

Microsoft webmatrix -video

Microsoft webmatrix video install#
Microsoft webmatrix video code#
Microsoft webmatrix video free#
Microsoft webmatrix video windows#
Although it appears easy, one should never fail to remember the different configurations involved. Developers can't beat the price tag, FREE, given the number of awesome developer tools and technologies that are included in the technology stack. In today’s world of quick development and faster productivity, creating website seems an easy task. Lots of really nice features to make ASP.NET Web Developers and PHP Developers much more productive at developing small business websites. But once Visual Studio Developers ( me included ) feel confident the API for developing extensions is stable, we will hopefully find a lot more extensions available to WebMatrix Developers. Until WebMatrix 2 is officially released and stable we probably won't see too many extensions. Some of the WebMatrix 2 Extensions in the gallery include: The Extension Gallery is like the Nuget Gallery except extensions add functionality to WebMatrix 2! Visual Studio Developers can build extensions that offer new functionality in WebMatrix 2 to help developers be more productive and have a better developer experience in general. The one feature that shows a lot of promise is the Extension Gallery. We have always been able to add these manually, but now with Nuget support built into WebMatrix 2 it is so much easier to complete these tasks! WebMatrix 2 Extension Gallery The same is true for all the other helpers as well. If you want to display Twitter tweets and Twitter Follow links on your website, for example, the Twitter Helper can help you do it with very little code. There are quite a number of social networking helpers available in the Nuget Package Gallery, like:
Microsoft webmatrix video install#
Probably the most productive new feature in WebMatrix 2 is the Nuget Package Gallery, which allows web developers to easily install and integrate a number of helpers into their websites. I have had a chance to use all of these new features and they are all really exciting. This allows you to easily add libraries and helpers to WebMatrix for Twitter, Facebook, PayPal, Amazon, etc. Nuget is now integrated into WebMatrix 2 with the new Nuget Package Gallery. This allows Visual Studio Developers to write extensions that further improve and provide additional functionality in WebMatrix 2. The addition of an Extension Gallery for extending WebMatrix 2.The Database Manager for designing, querying, and entering data into SQL Server is 1000 times better.
Microsoft webmatrix video code#
Code completion and validation of HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, and jQuery have been added or greatly improved!.
Some of the new features included in WebMatrix 2 are: Otherwise, WebMatrix 2 is great for creating Orchard CMS Websites! New Features in WebMatrix 2 I can attest to the power of the Web App Gallery as I use it to develop Orchard CMS Websites and create custom Orchard Themes! The only thing I prefer to do in Visual Studio is to create custom Orchard Modules and Widgets, which benefit from a higher-end development environment. In fact, in the WebMatrix 2 Presentation at the Microsoft Build Conference the presenter built 4 websites in 60 minutes using Umbraco, Joomla, WordPress, and a starter website template.
Microsoft webmatrix video free#
This is a serious collection of free development tools and technologies to develop database-driven websites using both ASP.NET and PHP! In addition, the Web App Gallery and Starter Templates are an amazing treasure of assets that can jumpstart website development.
Standards Support: HTML, CSS, JavaScript.
Getting Started: Web App Gallery and Templates.
I took some notes in one of the Build Conference Presentations on WebMatrix 2 as to what WebMatrix is to web developers. You get HTML, CSS, and JavaScript editing and intellisense, database development tools for SQL Server and MySQL, integration with Nuget, remote website publishing and editing, reporting on SEO and website health, ASP Web Pages and PHP Scripting, starter websites and templates, and a whole gallery of CMS, Blogging, and other applications like Orchard CMS, Umbraco, Joomla, WordPress, and DotNetNuke out-of-the-box! Let's discuss some of the new features in WebMatrix 2! What is WebMatrix 2! WebMatrix 2 is not just a website editor, but a stack of technologies offering end-to-end website development and deployment services. I am excited about them all, but I want to focus first on WebMatrix 2, which offers a lot of interesting new features for web developers interested in developing small business websites. NET Developer and Microsoft MVP it is always great to get early access to Microsoft development tools and technologies.
Microsoft webmatrix video windows#
As of today I have successfully installed Windows 8, Visual Studio 2011, WebMatrix 2, ASP.NET MVC 4 and all the related developer tools and technology stacks that come with them. Microsoft released a preview of a number of new technologies and developer tools at the Microsoft Build Conference.
