It’s a thing of poetry. Eyes all-seeing, no detail too minor if it serves his composition. Emmrich is a man of refined tastes, regards the world with rapt attention, a mind filled with references like the quotations on an academic paper, every footnote spanning decades of romantic idealism.

And how often has it gone unnoticed? The details he’s spent hours pondering, this or that flower in the table arrangement, lilies for the purity of his intentions, an orchid to complement their beauty. What wine is best suited to their taste, to bed them amidst the silken sheets or the soft green linen?

It is a trained muscle, one whose memory he cannot erase – nor does he know how. Only so long until they are saturated by his grand affection and then? What then? You suffocate me, he’d once been told. They had been seeing each other for over a year, one of his longer entanglements, one he hadn’t considered an entanglement in quite some time, if truth be told. Any attempt at domesticity had been met with indifference, he remembers, until those words were thrown his way. Not indifference, then, but rejection. You suffocate me.

And yet he cannot stop. He’ll see the lush white roses and think of them, smell a perfumed oil he can’t resist imagining on their skin as he traces it with tongue and teeth. He is not one for careless carnality, it’s the gold shimmer around it that does it for him, even if he has to sprinkle it himself.

You suffocate me.

But Rook. No, Rook, she would at least indulge him. Perhaps she would tease, smile, wonder about him, but she would not dismiss.

“Are you trying to impress me?” she’d ask and he’d feel caught even though it is exactly what he’s doing.

She is receptive to his extravagance but he can’t tell if it’s his flattery that suits her or the intent underneath. Longing for connection, her at times clumsy flirtations leave cracks in her façade that allow for a tiny drop of sadness to seep through. He would catch it with his lips, if she let him, pour his love in the gaps until it soothes every bruise left behind. Who needs air, he thinks, when you can fill your lungs with the essence of a dream?

You suffocate me.

Sometimes he wonders if the golden hours are worth the heartbreak. He is too old to change. And yet, could he stand this one last stab? She is his last attempt to reach the castle he’s built in his dreams, enduring affection, one Johanna would have scoffed at. But Rook is the sharpest knife, one twist to kill, a point acute enough to burst the construct in his mind, yet with a blade fine enough to gut him with the precision of a scalpel. He won’t bleed out, no messes left behind. Should he fail it will be a clean death, one with no footnotes or rose petals.

He finds himself longing for it either way.

ava has an issue with characters' driving forces

this post does have spoilers for the new episode, so i'll put this all under a "read more"

disclaimer goes away after a week, i will edit this post so be warned

there's a trend i've noticed when it comes to the main antagonists of ava and avm. theres a common theme amongst all of the villains (i'm counting second and chosen, since they are technically antagonists per ava season 1). let's explore this.

case 1: king orange

it's obvious that the thing motivating king to take over the bastion and get the minecraft icon is the fact that he lost his kid, and to an extent the kid's other guardian (wife, husband, s/o, pick your favorite); he creates a literal black hole in order to see his kid again because of an incident he couldn't control. not to mention king orange also lost purple's trust, and their support as a whole, which further emphasizes the loss of his son given that purple was a second chance, and he messed it up by losing sight of their relationship. this is something that king orange couldn't willingly control.

case 2: purple

purple experiences two kinds of loss: death and abandonment. obviously lapis (regular blue) abandons the family because they didn't approve of orchid (pink) coddling their child, something that purple couldn't control. then purple has to live with the fact that their only other parent is dying to some unforeseen reason, likely illness, and that too is something that they couldn't control.

case 3: second

second is more interesting, because it's something that gets glossed over. they're the antagonist in ava 4 up until the very end, and why does second do the things they do? because they lost their friends to something (someone; alan) they couldn't control and this is repeated in showdown; second watches dark kill their friends because of dark's own spite and hatred, which i will cover next. that is something second cannot control

case 4: dark

i think dark is a really good example of this trend; they were made to attack chosen and lost control, ultimately losing and teaming up with chosen to work against alan. then they convinced chosen to go on a conquest to essentially take over the world, which ends in dark losing chosen's trust and support as a friend due to beliefs that dark couldn't control (chosen's own morals)

case 5: chosen

compared to everyone else, chosen experiences loss and the inability to maintain control in different ways. they fought back against alan and, as punishment, was forced to be alan's pop-up window destroyer against their own will, and they can't control it then he does, freeing himself, prompting dark's creation, and eventually befriending dark and teaming up with them to destroy the world. they grew distant, not sharing the same beliefs and reasoning as dark anymore, and directly opposed dark during the virabot sequence. this all leads to chosen and dark fighting during the showdown, which is when chosen ultimately watches second kill their former friend and can't control that

case 6: victim

the whole reason why this post was made is because of victim's whole deal with mitsi. they endured abuse, lost the upperhand in that initial fight with alan, took matters into their own hands and fled the computer then met mitsi, fell in love, started a company together, and they lost her in a situation that they couldn't control, that being chosen and dark destroying newgrounds

if you couldn't notice already, there is something that happens between every single antagonist, and that's the fact that every antagonist has lost something due to circumstances they can't control

obviously the circumstances are different. majority of these antagonists have experienced loss through death, while a handful also experienced loss through losing control, losing free will, so on so forth

"why is this an issue?"

put it this way: every single antagonist is being driven by the same exact thing, just in different fonts

every single major antagonist, in some way, shape, or form, loses something. as a result they are driven to get whatever they lost back, whether it's a loved one or the love of someone that is now gone (or in dark's case, trust).

i personally believe that there was a lot of missed potential within the antagonists, as i'm sure some people think, and i think it's because instead of having characters do things out of spite or out of sheer evil, it's in an attempt to get something back.

the reason i'm saying main antagonists and not villains is because in the case of youtube from animation vs youtube, the corrupt video green in the influencer arc, the pokemon universe in animation vs pokemon, and even the entire animation vs education series, the antagonists aren't going against second and the color gang because they lost someone dear to them or they lost the affection of those around them

case in point: corrupt video green. they were never loved to begin with, and that is what causes them to lash out at the color gang and fight them. everyone turned their back on them because they were imperfect, because they loved other creations more than them

also case in point: animation vs math. euler's identity only combatted second because second was technically the one that invaded their space. they're not trying to bring anyone back to life like king orange was, they were just protecting their territory

my thoughts are a little incoherent right now but i have a point, that being that the antagonists should have another reason to do the things they do that isn't just "oh my wife/son/friend/dad and mom died"

one time, you guys attended a music festival together, your feet aching from constantly standing and walking around in your heels, even if it was the lowest pair you had. with a single complaint, ni-ki switched shoes with you. his huge timberlands comfy against the stinging pads of your feet while he nonchalantly stood barefoot in his socks, enjoying the music. he even tried wearing your heels for a minute. eventually, you felt bad he had to endure the music festival in just his socks, but he didn't care how dumb he looked or how dirty his socks got as long as his girl was comfortable.

we all know how obsessed he is with chrome hearts. this boy does not shy away from sharing his obsessions with you because you're top 1 of them all. would absolutely scour the whole internet and take his time searching physical stores to look for merchandise you would love. anything pink he could find, automatically pulling out his wallet for you.

trust that he will always have something that symbolizes you with him. whether it be a cute cat keychain hanging on his leather bag, or a cutout of your kiss mark he stubbornly insisted you make for him inserted in his phone case. one time you caught him tie one of your ribbons to his belt hoop, a final touch to his outfit.

loves sleepovers with you. especially your makeup or skincare sessions. will patiently hold on to your waist as you smear another product he has no idea about on his face, loving the sensation of your gentle fingers running all over his skin. one time, he insisted you give him a 'glam makeover', which was a full face of makeup like yours. you argued with him the whole time because he could not keep a straight face, causing you to keep messing up the makeup. he just couldn't resist the smile tugging at his lips everytime he saw you so focused trying to do his 'glam makeover'.

he loves music, and it was hard for him not to associate every song with you. throughout your days together, he would blow up your messages, sending links to songs, pestering you to listen and share your thoughts on it. ofcourse, playlists handpicked by himself were no exception. the cover photos? the candid photos he would take of you.

this ones gonna be pretty long since im adding images, I'll be updating this post later with my 2 new ocs' symbols (both s41), so for now itll just be Toki, Clove, Hori, and Sera.

Animal: Hare (usually fertility,,,, but um... no. just imagine a predatorial rabbit lmao)

Flower: Red Spider Lily (death)

Tarot: I The Magician, reversed. (Manipulation, cunning, trickery, deception)

Solar: Red Giant. A star that is nearing the end of it's life, it is so overwhelmed with energy and heat that it's about to explode.

Animal: White Tailed Deer (gentleness, kindness, grace, and sensitivity)

Flower: Orchids (hope, resilience, and endurance)

Everything that passes the event horizon will end up in the singularity. You will die.

(theres no like,,, super cool image of a singularity,, not even what itd look like obv... also, the idea of the singularity is a tad bit outdated and the structure of a black hole has been reworked i believe, but for sake of. my sanity. were going with endpoint/center.)

Ohh, i love this question..

Characters: Astarion, Wyll, Gale, Lae'zel, Karlach, Halsin. (+ minthara, Jaheira and minsc at the end)

Astarion wisteria: he never noticed it grows in the cemetery where he was buried. The night he died and came back to life, the wisteria was not in bloom yet, so he didn't notice, but after the absolute ordeal he came back a few times and in one of them, the wisteria was beautifully in bloom. It was magical to walk underneath the cascading pinks and purples, and in a way it felt like one of Tav's hugs. After seeing it, he finds a book about wisteria in Gale's stack of books, and it took him a second to steal it.

Every time he'd read more about this flower, his interest in it only grew, and along with it, he found himself growing pretty fond of the flower.

He could see himself in the delicate white petals: wisteria has different meanings in each region of Faerun and all of them were, in a way, parts of him.

Longevity, immortality, but also melancholy and a life cut short. It's new beginnings and self-reflection over the past.

Wyll likes poppies. Maybe it's the simplicity that catches his eye right away, or maybe the beautiful vibrant colors, nevertheless he makes sure that there's always a pot of poppies at home. He mostly takes care of it, cause he doesn't want to put the responsibility on someone else, but you bet he will water his poppies with a precision worth of the blade of avernus.

His first memory of poppies, he holds it very dear, cause it was one of the last truly happy memories with his father.

Wyll worked with his father briefly before Ulder had to depart for Elturel. They took their horses and traversed along the Chionthar to make sure it would be safe for Ulder and the fists to cross. Tough as they were riding, they stumbled upon a stunning yellow and red poppy field. It reminded them of the flaming fists, of their home, of their mission, but lastly of the sunset that would await them after Elturel was safe. Though they didn't actually say it out loud, they knew Wyll was going to treasure the moment.

Lae'zel loves snapdragons. First because they remind her of the might of githyanki's, then because she found them particularly relatable. Snapdragons can survive in the harshest temperatures, just like she was able to endure her whole life being turned upside down.

It's not easy to make her smile genuinely, but if you show up with Snapdragons, she will melt inside. (Though she'd never admit it)

Gale likes hyacinths. He's mesmerized by their structure, their colors, their smell. They are just so intriguing. He started growing hyacinths to practice his weave control, but over time he really grew fond of them.

Gale definitely has a name for his pots, and refers to them as his children. One time he was rambling about the flowers, and everyone believed he was a father and forgot to let them know.

"I cannot believe you all" Gale exclaimed, throwing his hands up. "do you think i'd really choose to be stuck here with you, rather than at home with literally my children?!"

"Yes" everyone answered in unison.

Karlach LOVES SUNFLOWERS. They just make her smile. She is a naturally outgoing and sunflowers just remind her of herself. Also she spent so long in Avernus, away from the sun, that when she came back to the surface, she followed it like a sunflower.

It wasn't easy to find them near Baldur's Gate, in fact the closest she's ever gotten to one was near Rosymorn monastery. The field was clearly blesses by Lathander, cause those sunflowers were breathtaking, even if she had to see them from her horse.

Halsin loved every flower, of course. But one that always made his heart swell was the four o'clock flower. It was something so unique: a flower that would bloom only at dawn. It was like a secret only for those eyes that stayed vigilant in the dark. It was a flower for those lonely souls that couldn't sleep. Although he always had nature by his side, he did feel lonely at the end of the day. Through the decades he had many lovers, but no one could fill that emptiness, and that flower passed unnoticed until everyone went to sleep, just like he would pass unnoticed as he guised as a butterfly.

Rewatching ep.29 of Love Between Fairy and Devil

Part 1 - I tried to include my comments in one post, but again so many things happen in this episode

(spoilers ahead)

So we learn that DFQC didn’t drink the elixir that would prevent him from feeling Xiao Lanhua’s pain while she was in the cave. And we also get this wonderful speech: “Since we are to be husband and wife, we must stay together until death do us part for better or worse. Even though I cannot bear this trial for her, how can I let her suffer alone?”

At this point, they haven’t said “I love you” (as far as I remember, correct me please if I am wrong), they have barely shared any intimate moments, yet their love for each other is so deep and beyond conventional relationship milestones, that they are willing to go through all this suffering.

Awe Xunfeng, now you make me feel bad for saying all those bad things for you. You have a heart, I may like you from now on.

He truly worries for her (I did not remember this at all) I am sorry, Xunfeng :(

Xiao Lanhua remembers their moments together (their first kiss in the prison, how DFQC was cooling the dew water for her, how he kissed her underwater, how he saved her from the immortals, riding the dragon, DFQC making petals flow around her, trying to get her pin, teaching him how to smile, kissing on the bridge, watching the sunrise together) to endure the torture. I am melting

Can I just say that I love Shangque? His devotion and kindness to DFQC are admirable

Uff, such a powerful scene when DFQC enters the room - the signs of exhaustion obvious on his face and the way he walks – and approaches her. His touch is so tender, the way he looks at her so sweet. I am dying, I love them so much

They are back in the palace and everyone kneels in front of their Moon Queen. So proud of my babies!

Look how happy Shangque is!!! So cute!

And what a shock for Changheng to realize that the Goddess he was engaged to is in fact Orchid.

How fast did I watch this the first time that I don’t remember her saying this? Poor Danyin :( I love her character development.

Ok, so Ronghao claims that the Moon tribe was the one that killed the 3000 heavenly soldiers. And the Emperor is like yes, I believe the prisoner, without investigating further, and I am going to start a war without any second thoughts.

Do you know how much I love sweet puppy dragon? He just gave Jieli a key to all his savings. I mean he is the purest, most innocent person in the world. He knows her, he knows what she’s like and yet he opens his heart (and his savings) to her, fully aware she might steal them and never look back. Because he wants to see the good in people. The cynical part of me thinks he is naive, but another part of me believes he is precious.

Haha Jieli is already thinking about opening a store with him. They are so cute together!

I mean look at how happy he is!

The metaphysical mechanics of Anakin's Force Ghost are the single biggest mystery of the period between RotJ and TFA to me.

If he can Force Ghost, or at least sometimes, then what governs what he can and cannot do, and who he can or cannot speak with?

If he can appear to others the way Obi Wan, Qui Gon, Yoda, and eventually Luke can, it makes very little emotional sense unless something is blocking him.

I like to think that Anakin, in death, had enough respect for Leia not to appear to her. His actions killed her real mam and dad, the people who raised her into a kind, strong person with integrity in every step. He tortured her, he destroyed her homeworld and her culture. He wouldn't be so stupid as to think that a nice father-daughter chat would solve everything.

I like to think that he loves her from an observational distance, and brims with pride at every step she takes for the galaxy that he injured gravely and so nearly destroyed. 众皆竞进以贪婪兮，凭不厌乎求索。 The crowd competes in greed, insatiable in their desires.

羌内恕己以量人兮，各兴心而嫉妒。 They measure others by their own standards, each filled with envy.

忽驰骛以追逐兮，非余心之所急。 They rush about in pursuit, but this is not my concern.

老冉冉其将至兮，恐修名之不立。 Old age approaches slowly, I fear my name will not endure.

朝饮木兰之坠露兮，夕餐秋菊之落英。 In the morning I drink the dew from magnolias, in the evening I eat fallen chrysanthemum petals.

苟余情其信姱以练要兮，长顑颔亦何伤。 If my heart is truly pure and steadfast, why should I fear a gaunt face?

掔木根以结茝兮，贯薜荔之落蕊。 I tie roots of trees to angelica, thread fallen petals of薜荔.

矫菌桂以纫蕙兮，索胡绳之纚纚。 I straighten cinnamon and knot orchids, twist胡绳 into long strands.

謇吾法夫前修兮，非世俗之所服。 I follow the ways of the ancients, not the customs of the vulgar.

虽不周于今之人兮，愿依彭咸之遗则。 Though I do not fit with the present, I wish to follow Peng Xian's example.

长太息以掩涕兮，哀民生之多艰。 I sigh deeply and wipe my tears, grieving the hardships of the people.

余虽好修姱以鞿羁兮，謇朝谇而夕替。 Though I love beauty and restrain myself, I am slandered morning and night.

既替余以蕙纕兮，又申之以揽茝。 Though I am dismissed for wearing orchids, I still gather angelica.

亦余心之所善兮，虽九死其犹未悔。 This is what my heart loves, though I die nine times, I will not regret it.

怨灵修之浩荡兮，终不察夫民心。 I resent the king's recklessness, never understanding the people's hearts.

众女嫉余之蛾眉兮，谣诼谓余以善淫。 The women envy my beauty, slandering me as wanton.

固时俗之工巧兮，偭规矩而改错。 The times are skilled in deceit, distorting rules and measures.

背绳墨以追曲兮，竞周容以为度。 They abandon the straight and follow the crooked, competing in flattery.

忳郁邑余侘傺兮，吾独穷困乎此时也。 I am filled with sorrow and despair, alone in my poverty.

宁溘死以流亡兮，余不忍为此态也。 I would rather die in exile than adopt such a demeanor.

鸷鸟之不群兮，自前世而固然。 The hawk does not flock with sparrows, this has been so since ancient times.

何方圜之能周兮，夫孰异道而相安？ How can the square and the circle fit together? How can different paths coexist?

屈心而抑志兮，忍尤而攘诟。 I bend my heart and suppress my will, enduring blame and insult.

伏清白以死直兮，固前圣之所厚。 I hold to purity and die upright, as the ancient sages did.

悔相道之不察兮，延伫乎吾将反。 I regret not examining the path clearly, lingering and turning back.

回朕车以复路兮，及行迷之未远。 I turn my carriage to retrace my steps, before I stray too far.

步余马于兰皋兮，驰椒丘且焉止息。 I walk my horse by the orchid-covered bank, gallop to the pepper-covered hill and rest.

进不入以离尤兮，退将复修吾初服。 I advance but meet with blame, retreat to cultivate my original purity.

制芰荷以为衣兮，集芙蓉以为裳。 I make clothes from lotus leaves, gather lotus flowers for a skirt.

不吾知其亦已兮，苟余情其信芳。 If no one understands me, so be it, as long as my heart is truly fragrant.

高余冠之岌岌兮，长余佩之陆离。 I raise my tall hat high, let my long sash flow freely.

芳与泽其杂糅兮，唯昭质其犹未亏。 Fragrance and splendor mingle, yet my pure essence remains untainted.

忽反顾以游目兮，将往观乎四荒。 Suddenly I look back and gaze afar, preparing to roam the four wastelands.

佩缤纷其繁饰兮，芳菲菲其弥章。 I wear a profusion of adornments, their fragrance grows stronger.

民生各有所乐兮，余独好修以为常。 Each person has their own joys, I alone love beauty as my constant.

虽体解吾犹未变兮，岂余心之可惩。 Even if my body is torn apart, my heart will not change.

女嬃之婵媛兮，申申其詈予。 My sister admonishes me, scolding me repeatedly.

曰：“鲧婞直以亡身兮，终然夭乎羽之野。 She says, "Gun was stubborn and lost his life, dying in the wilderness of Yu.

汝何博謇而好修兮，纷独有此姱节？ Why are you so outspoken and love beauty, alone in your lofty integrity?

薋菉葹以盈室兮，判独离而不服。” Weeds fill the room, yet you alone reject them."

众不可户说兮，孰云察余之中情？ The crowd cannot be persuaded door to door, who can understand my true feelings?

世并举而好朋兮，夫何茕独而不予听？ The world loves factions, why am I alone and unheard?

依前圣以节中兮，喟凭心而历兹。 I follow the ancient sages to find balance, sighing and relying on my heart.

济沅、湘以南征兮，就重华而敶词： I cross the Yuan and Xiang rivers to journey south, seeking Chonghua to plead my case:

“启《九辩》与《九歌》兮，夏康娱以自纵。 "Qi opened the 'Nine Songs' and 'Nine Changes,' yet Xia Kang indulged in pleasure.

不顾难以图后兮，五子用失乎家衖。 He did not plan for the future, leading to the loss of his house.

羿淫游以佚畋兮，又好射夫封狐。 Yi was reckless in hunting, shooting the great fox.

固乱流其鲜终兮，浞又贪夫厥家。 Chaos rarely ends well, Zhuo greedily took his family.

浇身被服强圉兮，纵欲而不忍。 Ao was strong and violent, indulging his desires without restraint.

日康娱而自忘兮，厥首用夫颠陨。 He reveled daily, forgetting himself, leading to his downfall.

夏桀之常违兮，乃遂焉而逢殃。 Jie of Xia often defied virtue, meeting with calamity.

后辛之菹醢兮，殷宗用而不长。 Xin of Yin was minced and pickled, the Yin dynasty did not last long.

汤、禹俨而祗敬兮，周论道而莫差。 Tang and Yu were reverent and respectful, Zhou's laws were without fault.

举贤才而授能兮，循绳墨而不颇。 They promoted the worthy and capable, following the rules without deviation.

皇天无私阿兮，览民德焉错辅。 Heaven is impartial, favoring those with virtue.

夫维圣哲以茂���兮，苟得用此下土。 Only the sage-kings, with their abundant virtue, could rule the land.

瞻前而顾后兮，相观民之计极。 Looking back and forth, observing the people's ultimate needs.

夫孰非义而可用兮？孰非善而可服？ Who can be used without righteousness? Who can be followed without goodness?

阽余身而危死兮，览余初其犹未悔。 I risk my life in danger, yet I do not regret my original intent.

不量凿而正枘兮，固前修以菹醢。 Without measuring the hole, I fit the peg, as the ancients were minced and pickled.

曾歔欷余郁邑兮，哀朕时之不当。 I sigh deeply, filled with sorrow, grieving my untimely fate.

揽茹蕙以掩涕兮，沾余襟之浪浪。 I gather soft orchids to wipe my tears, soaking my lap with flowing tears.

跪敷衽以陈辞兮，耿吾既得此中正。 I kneel and spread my robe to speak, my heart is clear and upright.

驷玉虬以乘鹥兮，溘埃风余上征。 I ride a jade dragon, mounting a phoenix, swiftly ascending on the wind.

朝发轫于苍梧兮，夕余至乎县圃。 At dawn I depart from Cangwu, by evening I reach Xuanpu.

欲少留此灵琐兮，日忽忽其将暮。 I wish to linger at the divine gate, but the day is fading fast.

吾令羲和弭节兮，望崦嵫而勿迫。 I order Xihe to slow the pace, gazing at Yan

欲远集而无所止兮，聊浮游以逍遥。 I wish to go far but have no place to stop, so I wander freely in leisure.

及少康之未家兮，留有虞之二姚。 Before Shaokang has a family, I will seek the two daughters of Youyu.

理弱而媒拙兮，恐导言之不固。 The matchmaker is weak and clumsy, fearing the words will not be firm.

世溷浊而嫉贤兮，好蔽美而称恶。 The world is murky and envious of the worthy, hiding beauty and praising evil.

闺中既以邃远兮，哲王又不寤。 The inner chambers are deep and distant, the wise king does not awaken.

怀朕情而不发兮，余焉能忍与此终古？ I hold my feelings and do not express them, how can I endure this forever?

索琼茅以筳篿兮，命灵氛为余占之。 I seek琼茅 and筳篿, ordering Lingfen to divine for me.

曰：“两美其必合兮，孰信修而慕之？ She says, "Two beauties must meet, who is truly virtuous and admired?

思九州之博大兮，岂惟是其有女？” Think of the vastness of the nine regions, is there no maiden there?"

曰：“勉远逝而无狐疑兮，孰求美而释女？ She says, "Go far without doubt, who seeks beauty and will let you go?

何所独无芳草兮，尔何怀乎故宇？” Where is there no fragrant grass? Why do you cling to your old home?"

世幽昧以昡曜兮，孰云察余之善恶？ The world is dark and dazzling, who can discern my good and evil?

民好恶其不同兮，惟此党人其独异！ People's likes and dislikes differ, only this faction is unique!

户服艾以盈要兮，谓幽兰其不可佩。 They wear mugwort at their waists, saying orchids cannot be worn.

览察草木其犹未得兮，岂珵美之能当？ They cannot distinguish plants, how can they judge jade's beauty?

苏粪壤以充帏兮，谓申椒其不芳。 They fill their sachets with dung, saying pepper is not fragrant.

欲从灵氛之吉占兮，心犹豫而狐疑。 I wish to follow Lingfen's auspicious divination, but my heart hesitates and doubts.

巫咸将夕降兮，怀椒糈而要之。 Wu Xian will descend at dusk, I prepare pepper and rice to welcome him.

百神翳其备降兮，九疑缤其并迎。 A hundred gods descend in splendor, the nine peaks greet me in unison.

皇剡剡其扬灵兮，告余以吉故。 The emperor shines with divine light, telling me the auspicious reason.

曰：“勉升降以上下兮，求矩矱之所同。 He says, "Strive to rise and fall, seeking the same measures.

汤、禹俨而求合兮，挚、咎繇而能调。 Tang and Yu sought harmony, Zhi and Gao Yao could adjust.

苟中情其好修兮，又何必用夫行媒？ If your heart truly loves beauty, why need a matchmaker?

说操筑于傅岩兮，武丁用而不疑。 Shuo worked as a builder at Fuyan, Wu Ding used him without doubt.

吕望之鼓刀兮，遭周文而得举。 Lü Wang wielded a butcher's knife, meeting King Wen and rising.

宁戚之讴歌兮，齐桓闻以该辅。 Ning Qi sang his songs, Duke Huan of Qi heard and employed him.

及年岁之未晏兮，时亦犹其未央。 Before the year grows old, the time is not yet over.

恐鹈鴂之先鸣兮，使夫百草为之不芳。” I fear the cuckoo will sing first, making the hundred grasses lose their fragrance."

何琼佩之偃蹇兮，众薆然而蔽之。 How can my jade pendant be so lofty, yet the crowd obscures it?

惟此党人之不谅兮，恐嫉妒而折之。 Only this faction is untrustworthy, fearing envy will break it.

时缤纷其变易兮，又何可以淹留？ The times are chaotic and changing, how can I linger?

兰芷变而不芳兮，荃蕙化而为茅。 Orchids and angelica lose their fragrance, orchids and asarum turn to weeds.

何昔日之芳草兮，今直为此萧艾也？ Why are the fragrant grasses of the past, now mere mugwort?

岂其有他故兮，莫好修之害也！ Is there no other reason? It is the harm of not loving beauty!

余以兰为可恃兮，羌无实而容长。 I thought orchids could be relied on, but they are hollow and showy.

委厥美以从俗兮，苟得列乎众芳。 They abandon their beauty to follow the vulgar, barely ranking among the fragrant.

椒专佞以慢慆兮，樧又欲充夫佩帏。 Pepper is arrogant and flattering,樧 seeks to fill the sachet.

既干进而务入兮，又何芳之能祗？ They strive to advance and enter, how can their fragrance be respected?

固时俗之流从兮，又孰能无变化？ The times flow with the current, who can remain unchanged?

览椒兰其若兹兮，又况揭车与江离？ Seeing pepper and orchids like this, how much more揭车 and江离?

惟兹佩之可贵兮，委厥美而历兹。 Only this adornment is precious, abandoning its beauty through the ages.

芳菲菲而难亏兮，芬至今犹未沬。 Its fragrance is strong and enduring, its scent remains untainted.

和调度以自娱兮，聊浮游而求女。 I harmonize my steps and pace to amuse myself, wandering freely to seek a maiden.

及余饰之方壮兮，周流观乎上下。 While my adornments are still strong, I wander the heavens and earth.

灵氛既告余以吉占兮，历吉日乎吾将行。 Lingfen has told me the auspicious divination, I choose a lucky day to depart.

折琼枝以为羞兮，精琼爢以为粻。 I break a jade branch for food, grind jade powder for provisions.

为余驾飞龙兮，杂瑶象以为车。 I harness flying dragons, mix jade and ivory for my carriage.

何离心之可同兮？吾将远逝以自疏。 How can hearts that differ unite? I will go far to distance myself.

邅吾道夫昆仑兮，路修远以周流。 I turn my path to Kunlun, the road is long and winding.

扬云霓之晻蔼兮，鸣玉鸾之啾啾。 I raise clouds and rainbows, their brilliance dims the sun.

朝发轫于天津兮，夕余至乎西极。 At dawn I depart from Tianjin, by evening I reach the western edge.

凤皇翼其承旂兮，高翱翔之翼翼。 The phoenix spreads its wings, soaring high and gracefully.

忽吾行此流沙兮，遵赤水而容与。 Suddenly I wander in the flowing sands, following the Red River leisurely.

麾蛟龙使梁津兮，诏西皇使涉予。 I command the dragons to make a bridge, order the Western Emperor to ferry me across.

路修远以多艰兮，腾众车使径待。 The road is long and hard, I send my chariots ahead to wait.

路不周以左转兮，指西海以为期。 I pass Buzhou to the left, pointing to the Western Sea as my destination.

屯余车其千乘兮，齐玉轪而并驰。 I gather a thousand chariots, aligning their jade wheels to race together.

驾八龙之婉婉兮，载云旗之委蛇。 I drive eight dragons, their movements graceful, carrying cloud banners that wave.

抑志而弭节兮，神高驰之邈邈。 I suppress my will and slow my pace, my spirit soars far and wide.

奏《九歌》而舞《韶》兮，聊假日以媮乐。 I play the "Nine Songs" and dance the "Shao," taking a holiday to enjoy myself.

陟升皇之赫戏兮，忽临睨夫旧乡。 I ascend to the emperor's brilliance, suddenly gazing at my old home.

仆夫悲余马怀兮，蜷局顾而不行。 My servants grieve, my horses long for home, curling up and refusing to move.

乱曰：已矣哉！ The epilogue: It is over!

国无人莫我知兮，又何怀乎故都！ The state has no one who understands me, why cling to the old capital?既莫足与为美政兮，吾将从彭咸之所居！ Since no one can join me in good governance, I will follow Peng Xian's abode!

2024 Year End List - #9

Orquídeas - Kali Uchis

Main Genres: Contemporary R&B, Dance Pop, Latin Pop

A decent sampling of: Afropiano, Neo-Soul, Reggaetón, Psychedelic Soul

No big back story or introduction this time, folks. Unfortunately, I learned some not fun things while researching this review about Kali Uchis' history of defending partners who have abused other women, and just being a generally vindictive / nasty diva to some fans and collaborators.

I'm a bit bummed out cuz I considered myself a fan of her work, and it's very opposite from how I perceived her in interviews, but yadda yadda idol worship and para-sociality is bs, we all know this by now right? Just gonna focus on the music cuz I still really enjoyed this record.

Engage with her music as you see fit; I'm not usually for policing how others enjoy art made by toxic people if it's not reflected in the art itself.

Orquídeas is Kali Uchis' fifth full length record - yes, I am counting Por Vida. Dropped just months after 2023's Red Moon In Venus, her newest record marks her second departure (after Sin Miedo) from making primarily soul music, instead boasting the most eclectic collection of songs in her discography as of yet - a myriad of different Latinoamericano beats and sounds combined with her usual breezy pop R&B stylings. The record's colourful and silky sound palette is reflected in its stunning cover art, which almost feels like a light counterpart to the darkness of Tori Amos' 1998 From The Choirgirl Hotel.

Also similar to Sin Miedo, Orquídeas is primarily sung in Spanish. The title is likely a reference to Colombia's national flower, the orchid. The record in general seems to be the most that Kali Uchis has ever championed her Colombiana heritage, and the different aspects and genres of music she borrows from across the Latin American continent serves to further demonstrate her incredible range as a performer. Kali really can do just about any sound she takes on, thanks in large part to her gorgeous vocal chords that feel as though they were plucked right from the mouth of a mermaid matriarch.

"Me Pongo Loca" is plush, heavenly afropiano R&B with succulent e.piano chords that make little waves in the song's composition like shimmering ripples of rose-scented water in a shallow pool. Just close your eyes and you're already soaking in the sun, lying face-up on a beach of pink sand. I also love that little wonky-ish UK funky-garage production effect in the bridge.

Perhaps the very most poppy song in all of Kali Uchis' career, "Igual Que Un Ángel" combines nu-disco dance pop with guest star Peso Pluma, who, naturally, as a non-Latino person, I had to look up. To be honest, this easily could've been a Doja Cat track circa. 2020 if not for Kali's signature cleansing, soft-spoken upper-register vocal melodies. This goddamn thing has been stuck in my head for the better part of 2024 and got more heavy rotation than anything else off the record. Was also a very fun one to be practicing Spanish with on LyricsTraining.

The record climaxes fairly early on with the show-stopping spectacle that is "Te Mata". Uchis channels Cuban bolero into a fiery tale of a scorned woman who has endured hell and moved on to better things, but not before spitting poison at her wicked ex-lover. Tearful screams of vengeance and dishes being dashed to pieces off of tables, curtains closing and stages being lit on fire while the last swan song is sung. Pure auditory kino, and I'm confident saying that this is Kali's greatest vocal performance on a track to date, as well as dangerously close to being as good as 2023's "Moonlight".

Words cannot describe how excited I got at the end of this record when I heard the closer "Dame Beso / Muévete" transition from a flirtatious salsa number into the bouncy accordion-led merengue music characteristic of the Colombian Caribbean. It genuinely sounds like she's having so much fun on this track, and I think it's the right way to end a record that saw her explore so many styles she hadn't touched on yet.

Unfortunately, compared to Red Moon In Venus, this thing really feels bloated. It's 14 tracks long and almost all of the best songs are within the first six tracks. Moreover, there's tracks like "Muñekita" that get held back by some really cliche, played out "you're just jealous" lyrics that I really wish she'd outgrow already (of course, given what I know about the artist now, it makes a lot more sense).

Still, in a comparatively less stacked year, Kali Uchis was able to pretty much guarantee herself a spot on my year end list that was almost as high as she managed to rank last year.

Gonna have to decide what my relationship is with her music going forward, but credit where it's due - she is the rare example of a pop diva reaching her level of success that is truly serious about every record she makes, and consistently puts out great music. Orquídeas is certainly no exception.
