okay, explain away the backstory. explain away his hesitation to commit and desire to leave on the trauma. but how can you explain away his unwillingness to follow orders - and in fact, his TENDENCY to disobey them? I talked about this in the tags but I have to make it its own post because I keep circling back to it, and I just can't get over it.

that is his defining trait in Rogue One that sets up his entire arc in the movie. it's the core of him, it's his internal conflict. choosing not to kill Galen, going to Scarif - those are choices that very clearly don't come easy to him. it's a moral dilemma that you can see him struggle with heavily while he's on Eadu looking at Galen through his sniper. his finger hovers over the trigger, and you can see him come to the realization in real time that he can't do it, doesn't have to do it. he can choose not to. he even tells Jyn, "I had orders. orders that I disobeyed" with the implication that this isn't something he just does. putting down the sniper, going against his orders is a big fucking deal for him.

this is a character trait you just cannot do away with because it's so intricately tied to his arc and character development. but now we have a man who not only talks back to Draven and all the other generals, but worse, apparently has a tendency to disobey his orders all the time. to the point that K2 jokes about it. to the point that they literally put him on house arrest for it just DAYS before the movie.

but now the problem: how does it make sense that not killing Galen is a decision he struggles with? he shouldn't and I believe that this guy from Andor wouldn't. because it's both shown and stated very explicitly that this guy has absolutely no qualms about defying his orders from his superior officers. it's just another regular Tuesday for him. what's the big deal then? his entire character arc from Rogue One falls apart, and the significance of his choice to spare Galen is now almost meaningless. that's actually unforgivable in my eyes.
