this is a mid-2000's little blurb where Eddie is in his late 30's/early 40's and ends up in Oregon for whatever reason. maybe this is even drifter!eddie. there are so many isolated gas stations and mechanic garages where I am, I think about this every time I am on the road.

It was a dark and foggy November night when you pulled over to the first gas station for 50 miles on your long trek to the Pacific Northwest. Only a sliver of a moon in the sky and very few visible stars, most of them obscured by bully clouds. 

The two pumps under a metal awning were well-lit, as were the modest mechanic garage and mini mart connected to it, but the rest of the surrounding land was nothing but agriculture fields with no other sign of human life to be found.  

Perhaps you’d watched too many horror movies and episodes of Forensic Files, but this place gave you the creeps bad enough to make you wonder if it might be better to chance your luck and see how far you could get on fumes.  

You opened your door a crack, enough to stick the toe of your foot out, and a song from the newest Arcade Fire album Funeral blared from your speakers, just before you turned the ignition off.  You were about to get out and pump your own gas, because that was what you were used to—but then there stood a person, mere feet away, and you sank back, ready to slam your door, feeling suddenly threatened.  

The person in question was a man in light blue coveralls, with the added warmth of a leather jacket and black, fingerless gloves.  He had dark, wavy hair, just long enough to tuck behind his ears with two silver hoop piercings in one lobe, and there was some type of tattoo design peeking out of his collar on his throat.  His eyes were dark brown and kind, and you couldn’t help but notice the thin scar that pulled down the skin of one eye and made it droop slightly.

It took you an extra second to realize he had a cat with him.  The orange and brown calico teenager was perched on his shoulder and he steadied it with one hand to keep the feline secure while the tail swished behind.  The hand that held the cat was slashed in white scars, decorated in chunky, silver rings, and the fingernails had chipped black polish on them.  

He stopped abruptly, not wanting to scare you, not when that eastern side of the state had too many similarities to the scene of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.  

“Sorry, hi, I’m Eddie,” he opened the palm of his free hand and spread his fingers out in a bit of a Spock greeting to let you know he was safe.  “And this is Yvette,” he added, gesturing to the calico cat that he gently lowered to the ground.  You both watched her sprint off to the garage and through a tiny door that had been cut in the sheet metal.

“Regular or super?” He asked, clicking the pump handle off the port before you could get out and do it yourself.

“Don’t worry about it, I don’t mind—-” you were about to step down to do it yourself.

But then he chuckled softly, realization dawning.  “You can’t pump your own gas in Oregon,” he let you know in a patient voice, avoiding your eyes.  “I have to do it.  It’s the law," and at that last bit, he wiggled his eyebrows.

“Oh, of course,” you gave a ‘silly me’ laugh and crawled back in behind the wheel to shut the door before rolling the window down.  You gave him 20 bucks, and then you watched him from the side mirror as he stood there making sure you got what you paid for.  He was humming a song; one you couldn't place.  

“So,” you spoke up, sticking your head out of the window.  “How long have you lived here?”

He worked his jaw as he checked the rolling numbers on the gas tank, tucking a hair that escaped to his cheek, still never looking directly at you.  “I’ve been here a while,” he said, vaguely.

You stared at your steering wheel for a bit, until you heard the pump click to let him know your tank was full.  

“Thank you,” you said out the window.  He cleared his throat and said a gentle, “you’re welcome”, as he twirled your gas cap closed and snapped the shield into place.  You watched him head back into the garage, with several cats circling his feet.    

You spent the next several miles on the desolate road wondering about Eddie, why he looked so familiar, and how he’d ended up in such a po-dunk town.  You wondered about him until you were sleepy and had to pull over at a roadside motel to get some rest.  

You weren’t very far from the gas station, and you wondered if he would still be there in the morning.

You mentioned that sometimes zoos don’t get the funding they need? Is there anything that we, as visitors, can do to help with that? Donations, contacting representatives, things like that? What can we do to help zoos, zookeepers, and the animals they love and care for?

What a nice question!

So on a “we need funding for this new habitat or major renovation” level, the cost is pretty astronomical compared to what the average person can contribute. For example, the Oregon Zoo’s brand new Polar Passage habitat (started 2016, finished 2021) cost $19 million. The Brookfield Zoo is planning to add on a new indoor/outdoor ape habitat to their Tropics Building and that’s estimated at $9 million. Unless you happen to know folk with very deep pockets, personal donations aren’t going to have an impact on that scale - although that doesn’t mean they don’t help the zoo in other ways!

Contacting your representatives and expressing your support for your local facilities is absolutely something you can do that helps. Especially so if the facility is funded by the city or the county, but even if they’re not, it’s really good for reps to know that their constituents value the facility and want to see it supported. You can always write them whenever, but it’s most useful if there’s stuff happening that’s directly related (funding allocation, new rules being proposed, etc).

I’m going to take this opportunity to plug another way you can help zoos, though, that’s a bit different. Your question is really timely because there’s actually an ongoing need for support at the moment (date stamp: 6/11/23). There’s an organization I volunteer with, called Zoological Disaster Response, Rescue, and Recovery (ZDR3) and they do, well, what it says on the tin. When zoological facilities, sanctuaries, and other facilities with exotic animals experience disasters - think getting flattened by a hurricane - ZDR3 coordinates a network of 130+ facilities who can show up and help. This is everything from sending food and needed supplies that are limited because of supply lines, deploying staff to physically assist an impacted facility with recovery, and even helping evacuate animals and house them until it’s safe for them to return. And it’s really important that it’s other zoos doing this work: if you’ve got to go chainsaw fallen trees out of an alligator habitat, you need people who know how to work safely around alligators! It’s a type of response work that other major disaster organizations don’t really do, because they don’t have the expertise with the animals or the needs of the industry.

ZDR3 can always use support, but, right now, they’re in the middle of a response in Guam where financial support is more necessary than normal. Guam got hit by the Super Typhoon Mawar on May 25th, and it absolutely ravaged the zoo there. It’s a small facility, with mostly geriatric, disabled, and unreleasable animals living there. A USDA representative asked ZDR3 if they’d be able to assist. The director flew out to assess the site and help as much as she could, but the thing is, because Guam is an island, they can’t ask teams from other facilities to deploy there the way the can with facilities in the continental United States. Instead the zoo is having to purchase all the supplies they need for recovery - and could really use assistance. There’s an Amazon wishlist set up with the tools and supplies they need, as well as a DonorBox link for direct donations (which go directly to the zoo, not ZDR3). If you want a tangible way to contribute to the immediate welfare of zoo animals and function of a facility, this a fantastic way to do it.

What exactly is you job because I want it so bad?

It changes with the seasons, but right now I'm a chainsaw crew lead in Oregon! We're a full-time camping crew, roving through different FS districts in the state. My term will end in a few weeks & then I'll be back in the ocean. If you're interested in doing the kind of work I've been describing, I'd recommend looking into conservation corps programs in the region of your choice, with a focus on saw crews!

9th Circuit Stops Oregon Logging to Protect Marbled Murrelets

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals today affirmed a lower court ruling that prevents Scott Timber from clearcutting old growth trees within Oregon’s Elliott State Forest. The decision will protect marbled murrelets, which are a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.

The court found that the proposed logging of the 355-acre Benson Ridge parcel by the subsidiary of Roseburg Forest Products would violate the federal Endangered Species Act. The case marks the first time a private timber company has been held to account in court for potential violations of the Act in Oregon.

“After a decade of advocacy, the rare old growth in Benson Ridge is at last protected from private industry chainsaws,” said Nick Cady, legal director at Cascadia Wildlands. “This ruling is significant for the imperiled marbled murrelet and will hopefully dissuade land managers from logging the little remaining coastal old-growth forest in the state.”

U.S. Forest Service Agrees to Protect Nantahala Forest From Logging

The U.S. Forest Service announced Friday that it will scrap plans to log a biologically important area of North Carolina’s Nantahala National Forest near the Whitewater River. The announcement came nearly six months after the Center for Biological Diversity and allies sued the agency over the planned logging.

“This wild and beautiful forest was saved because people spoke up to defend it,” said Will Harlan, Southeast director at the Center for Biological Diversity. “Even though the public overwhelmingly supports protecting special places like the Pisgah and Nantahala national forests, the new forest plan tragically fails to do that. Unless the plan is changed to protect important forests and streams, more legal fights are probably going to be the only way to ensure that the public's voice is heard.”

The lawsuit was filed by the Southern Environmental Law Center, on behalf of the Center for Biological Diversity, Chattooga Conservancy, Defenders of Wildlife, MountainTrue and Sierra Club. The groups agreed to voluntarily dismiss the lawsuit once the agency agreed to abandon its logging proposal.

He continued to scan the crowd until his eyes caught on a flash of blue. Medical scrubs. There were a few hospitals in the area that were only a couple Max stops away in either direction and it was a nice apartment building so he wasn’t surprised to see one of their doctors or nurses living here. When the crowd cleared a bit, his eyes traveled to the man’s face and… oh.

An inch or so shorter than Ronan, the man was tall, slender, but fit. His skin was tan, somehow in the Oregon climate, and freckles dotted his high cheekbones. He had fair hair, dusty brown with hints of blonde, that stuck up in places. He had bright blue eyes, dark shadows beneath them from exhaustion, and fair eyebrows that were pitched down in focus as he shuffled across the road. He was bundled in only a thin black rain jacket over his scrubs and his hands dug into his pockets. Ronan was so distracted by the man, that he didn’t notice him coming closer and he also didn’t notice Chainsaw chattering loudly and consistently, a little tune of discomfort. 

“She can say that again,” the man said with a smile, cornflower blue eyes on Chainsaw, then flickering up to Ronan’s.

Ronan felt like his brain went offline, slowly rebooting, calibrating, all while he stood there helpless in front of a hot doctor. 

“Or he…?”

“She,” Ronan’s throat was dry but he pushed through the pain. “Her name is Chainsaw.”

Chainsaw let out a low mrrrrrrow in acknowledgment of her name, happy that she was not forgotten about in the chaos. 

“Chainsaw?” 

Before Ronan could explain himself, Chainsaw let out another warbling caterwaul.

The man smirked. “Nevermind, I can see where she got the name from.”

They stood in silence for a bit, the man dug a dated smartphone out of his jacket and swiped to unlock the screen. Ronan averted his eyes, trying not to pry, but his pulse was racing. He couldn’t remember the last time he felt the buzzing sensation of a crush so instantly and fiercely. He had hooked up with random strangers in bars and clubs, but that felt like just scratching an itch. This was an all-consuming infatuation where Ronan was desperate to learn everything about this guy. Maybe he should start with his name. 

“Ronan,” he blurted out, cheeks red, throat closing up already in embarrassment, but he soldiered on. “That’s, um, my name. Ronan.”

The guy looked over, blinking focus back in his eyes. “Oh, uh, I’m Adam.” 

Adam. 

“Are you like a doctor or something?” Brilliant, Lynch.

Adam ran his fingers through his hair, smoothing out some of the uneven ends. “I’m in residency,” he let out an exhaustive sigh and a weary laugh. “I just got home from a 26 hour shift and didn’t even get to take off my shoes before this happened.” 

“Brutal,” Ronan so eloquently replied.

time capsule: Fairbanks, AK weekly newspaper of Oct 4, 1961.

Last November, when I was visiting my folks on the Oregon coast, I dropped in at one of my favorite antique stores and came away with an issue of Jessen’s Weekly, a newspaper where the television section was larger than the news section since this was the closest thing to TV Guide available. A fun read about how JFK was pissing off Ike’s fanboys, all the news that’s fit to print and fresh haddock, the growing pains of a place that’s only been a state for three years, and a police blotter that basically says that drunk men and three teenage boys are responsible for all the major crimes in Fairbanks.

First thing to note is that while there’s no classified ad saying this, the Weekly is desperately in need of a proofreader. I’m no newspaper man despite all the journalism, newswriting, and desktop publishing classes from junior high through college, but if you’re a weekly you do have some time to read over at last part of your copy before going to press. I’m omitting a few other egregious errors in body copy since those can slip by easily, but a headline?

Another several typos here, but I will give credit because it’s unclear whether it was The Music Shop that provided incorrect information to the paper or the paper’s layout person who boned this. First thing, I own all four of the albums mentioned above:

Now then: Error 1 is that Sheldon ‘Shelley’ Berman (1925-2017) spelled his name with an ‘e’ before the ‘y’. Error 2 is that the name of his record label was Verve, with a ‘v’ before both of the ‘e’s.

Time for another didn’t-read-the-ad-first ad! And this one MATTERS! I highly doubt that Northern Commercial Company was giving away free McColloch chainsaws, or until this thing hit the stands.

The TV and radio listings were the second, larger section of the paper. And herein you discover they didn’t flip the switch on the two local television stations until 11:55am (CBS) or 5:30pm (NBC and ABC shared a station!). Guess you were supposed to listen to the radio, which did have plenty of programs scheduled, from their start at 6am until the boobtube warmed up. Also take note of the number of 15 minute programs that were available in 1961, as well as how you could get all the CBS soap operas you could stand: Love of Life, Search For Tomorrow, Guiding Light, As The World Turns, The Secret Storm, The Edge Of Night, and The Brighter Day -- a series which was cancelled two weeks before this issue printed but it would be a little while before a current episode’s tapes reached the TV station and there’s nothing in the blurbs that fill the pages about the cessation of the show.
