Man, fuck the Ori game series (affectionate). XD I have inverted my sleep schedule because I started replaying them and goddamn there is no game with more satisfying platforming and exploration, there just isn't. I love the shit out of the Metroid games and Prime felt close but I have never lost sleep playing them. But these two games? God! They're so pretty and so engrossing that I can't stop once I start. The second game literally crashed on me tonight, I was playing that long. XD

Anyway, if you like Metroidvanias or just really pretty and cute things, play Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Whisps. The first game's story is so dumb but it doesn't even matter, it's that good to play. And the second really exppands on everything from the first but actually does have characters and a vague plot to care about.

Genesis

Sure, Ludice is going on an adventure, but how come the world she evolves in has been shaped and evolved ? Who is Orys ? Who is Léviath ? How did he arrive in this world ? This is a story of sorrow and wrath born from it in a far, far away place...

Once upon a time, when planets and stars were dull and dead, a whisp of stardust started to wonder : Why are all the planets so sad-looking ? She decided to ask around, for she was very young, and the forces around her were far wiser.

Life said so : We all want a family, we all want to belong, yet we can't live in harmony for who once is equal will strive to step on others. All rotting planets around are fools, too ambitious to realise they lost trust and companionship.

Sun said so : We all want to be the start of something new, yet we strive to do anything as long as it's a novelty, not even asking if we should. We become blind and deaf to the cautionary tales of our dead elders, only to end up in their place, a never-ending cycle. dulling stars around are fools, too caught up in the net of their mistakes to allow younger generations to strive in their stead.

Force said so : We all want to go everywhere and experience everything, yet we can't accept when some disagree because they experienced wonders another way. People start to argue so gain the upper hand, and by doing so lose any support. All wandering rocks around are fools, too caught up in their own truth to prove instead of sharing.

Spark said so : We all want to have our kins around, yet we strive to differ from one another. We create boundaries, we create values, but these values have no purpose but to make one feel better by trampling on others. All absorbing black holes around are fools, too caught up in their bigotry to realise they alienated their peers yet still wish to pull them in.

The whisp of stardust started to wonder. Her elders were wise, yet they all warned her about the same mistakes. All of the elders now emprisoned in their own failure did the same one : trying to do everything alone. But the whisp yearned for companionship, and scouted the four elders to create something. Together.

As they agreed, a new project was born, full of life and wonders, of many adventures and people sharing, of found families and unbreakable companionship. A Marble of Life that will come to be known as Earth.

It lasted for a long time.

Until the Spark disappeared.

Until the Sun mourned and drifted away.

Until Léviatha'n, the soon to be God of Winter, decided to steal the marble, out of sorrow and anger born from it.

Besides horses and reading, my main hobby is gaming. I used to have a separate gaming blog, but I decided to consolidate a while ago... but then never really posted anything. I want to start posting more. Earlier this year I posted my backlog and that's kind of gone okay, but also kind of gone off the rails. I made a big purchase this year, and that was my OLED Steam Deck.

I work from home, and even though I've made an effort to make my work space cute and comfy, after working a 10 hour day in that space honestly the last thing I want to do is turn around and turn on my personal PC to game in the same space. The Steam Deck has allowed me to game on the couch, in bed, on long car rides, on plane rides. 10/10 purchase.

Quick and dirty review of games I've played and how they run on the Deck...

Elden Ring - made it to the final boss of the main game, then changed gears to the DLC. I think I'm about 50% done with the DLC. Runs amazing other than the occasional freeze when porting to new locations that requires a hard reboot of the Deck. When I first booted up the game I was amazed with how good the graphics looked on the deck.

Hogwarts Legacy - finished. Runs great. Areas sometimes take a minute to load inside the castle. No issues in the greater world.

No Rest for the Wicked - seems to run fine. Game wasn't particularly for me.

Cult of the Lamb - spent about 25 hours in the game before moving on. Super cute game. Ran amazing.

Hades II - same as above, about 20 - 25 hours before moving on. Ran really well.

Ori and the Blind Forest/Ori and the Will of the Whisps - two separate games, but I spent about 10 hours each in them. Platformers aren't really my thing, but the game was super cute and had a cozy vibe even if it did occasionally make me grind my teeth in frustration. Runs and looks great.

Lies of P - got this for my birthday and have played *checks Steam* 70 minutes. Steam warns you that some font might be small, but I've had no issue so far.

Diablo 4 - runs really well. Honestly, my biggest complaint about this game is that it feels barely a step above a mobile game, but that makes it look really good on the Deck IMO. I kind of bounced off this one after starting and restarting characters. I so badly wanted to relive my mid-20s grinding D3 and I'm just not that gamer or person any more.

Horizon Zero Dawn - my current game that I'm playing. Runs very well. No complaints so far. Similar to Elden Ring I've been impressed with the graphics on the Deck. I have everything set to high and it looks and runs really well.

And now for the not so good...

Baldur's Gate 3 - anybody who tells you this runs well on the Deck is lying to you. It runs like hot garbage. I'm not sure if it's just too intense of a game, or the optimization just isn't there, but the cut scenes barely run and everything is so pixilated it's hard to tell characters apart during combat. I had really hoped that I would finish my playthrough of this game on the Deck, but no dice.

Oxygen Not Included - Does it run? Yes. Does it look fine? Absolutely. Are the controls meant for Deck? Nope. Maybe if you connected an external mouse and keyboard it would be fine, but that would personally defeat the purpose of having a Deck for me. I have over 100 hours into this game on my PC, so I'm not really missing not playing it on my Deck.

I create surreal digital paintings that are heavily inspired by manta rays, chess, landscapes, birds, clouds and so much more. I’ve been creating art since I was a toddler and haven’t stopped, it’s a part of who I am and I’m using Tumblr as a space to share my work and some motivation tips and tricks I use during my creative process.

I was so annoyed by The Messenger's "okay but not quite good enough" gameplay that I started replaying the Ori games a couple days ago and they're still so good that my sleep schedule is now inverted. Whoops. XD Really pretty games and top notch Metroidvania gameplay. The first game's story makes no sense but it's pretty. Never finished the second one but I probably will in a few days at this rate. XD
