Chapter 3
Tumblr media
I sat on my bed that night looking at the moon through my window. Tony is a good man and he loves me and maybe I can love him, but I have doubts. Fuck. I’m such a bad person.
It's been six weeks since Oscar got out. I've been keeping myself busy by working at my sister’s beauty store and avoiding Oscar. And I’m doing a pretty good job at avoiding him, if I do say so myself. I was finally walking home after I finished helping my sister with her store when I spotted Jamal, Ruby, and Monse.
“Monse!” I shouted her name with a smile and sped up to greet them.
“Hey, when did you get back?”
“I just got back today, hey do you know why Ruby and Jamal aren’t talking to Cesar, he tells you everything cause these shitheads won’t tell me anything” She walked next to me to look at Jamal and Ruby with an eye roll. Just when I was going to answer, we heard someone blasting their music and when we turned to look, it was the familiar red impala coming down the street.
Ruby shook his head, “We can’t tell you what Cesar said.”
“Fine, then I’ll ask myself”
She walked on the street and stopped right in front of the Impala, forcing Oscar to stop the car.
“Hey, you crazy!”
I turned to Jamal and Ruby.
“What did Cesar say?” I asked. I was curious to know why Monse was so upset and why they weren’t talking to him.
“Cesar said he hit it” I gasped and turned to look at Monse leaned over talking to Oscar.
“Jamal!” Ruby yelled and Jamal quickly covered his mouth with his hand. He turned to me”, look just don’t tell Monse”
“I won’t, but you know the truth always comes out, I’ll talk to-“
“Hey Y/N! Get in the car, I’ll take you home”
I turned to look at Oscar and crossed my arms.
“No, I’m perfectly fine with walking.”
Cesar turned to look at me with desperation in his eyes. I sighed and bid my goodbyes as I got in next to Cesar.
Oscar drove me to his house and asked me to stay for a while. But I declined and told him I was gonna pass to the bathroom and get some of my stuff, although I left out the second part. I was only gone for six weeks and the house is already a mess. Ugh, men. By the time I walked out, I saw Cesar sitting on the couch and Oscar sitting behind him on a crate, with Monse standing in front of him.
“We can go inside-“ Oscar cut him off by clearing his throat “, But uh if you wanna sit on my face, you gotta put that mouth on pause so I can concentrate”
All of the Santos laughed and he fist bumped Oscar. Poor Monse had the look of humiliation on her face.
“What the fuck? You put him up to this didn’t you!”
“Hey,” Oscar stood up and tried to get in my face “,don’t start shit.”
“Fuck you Oscar”
I was beyond pissed. How dare he try to intimidate me in front of his puto friends. I wanted to release some steam by hanging out with my friends but they were on the clock so that was a no and my mom went to visit family in Mexico, so I’m in a house all by myself . You must be wondering what happened to Tony. Let’s just say he could see I wasn’t Interested and he wasn’t mad. He told me he loved me and he’d be willing to wait for me when I realize Oscar ain’t shit.
I was watching tv in the living room when I heard movement in my room. I could feel my heart start racing. I sped tip-toed into the kitchen and grabbed a knife. I stood beside my closed bedroom door and waited for whoever was in there to come out. My heart sped as the door opened and I put the knife against the throat of the perpetrator. Only it wasn’t, it was Oscar. I let out a sigh of relief.
“What the fuck Oscar? You could’ve knocked on the door”
I walked to the kitchen with him following behind me and put the knife away.
“What are you doing here?”
“Came to talk.”
“ I don’t have anything to say to you’’
“Haven’t seen you with that guy”
“What’s it to you?” I asked as I leaned on the kitchen counter. I watched as he stepped closer to me.
“I failed you a thousand times, yet you’re still mine”
He walked closer so our chests were touching, he held my chin up gently forcing me to look up at him.
“He seemed sincere unlike my flaws, but I’m the bad guy you don’t stop loving. You’re like Cinderella and he’s the pitiful fool and even though I’m not Prince Charming, I’m still the love of your life”
My eyes started to water and I tried to look down but he wouldn’t let me.
“Oscar- please”
“I love you, Y/N”
I felt a tear run down my face and Oscar leaned his forehead against mine touching my nose with his.

Para Siempre, Part 3
Pairing: Oscar Diaz x Latina Reader (Sofia)
Warnings: Mentions of gang life, several curse words, mentions of guns, anger management issues, mentions of drugs, blood and murder, brief moment of violence (towards Oscar - a slap that he had coming), half-naked Oscar (I almost had a heart attack during this scene 🤭🙈), Oscar still holds out hope for Reader 💙
A/N: You can find the entire series on this link 🥰

[August 2015]
Sofia’s cab drops her off in her old neighbourhood. It’s only been a month, but the trip to Europe really changed her perspective. Cesar is already waiting at the curb to greet her. At least that’s what she thought. To be fair, it is in part because of that…
“Oscar’s out.” Cesar says before Sofia is able to give him a hug, stopping her in her tracks. She stills for a second, blinks a few times and slowly nods.
“Okay, I’ll…good. Let me just put this away and then you’ll tell me more.” She gathers her words.
“Why don’t I tell you myself?” She hears from behind her back. She swears she can hear him smirking. She lets go of her things, spins around and smacks him right across his face.
“Well…are you coming inside or not?” She asks as she picks up her things and marches inside. Cesar gives his big brother a reassuring smack on the back and leaves the front yard. Oscar groans and goes in the house. He finds Sofia angrily throwing her clothes out of the suitcase.
“Sof-“
“Why are you out already? You were supposed to be released next year.” She interrupts him.
“Good behaviour.” Oscar smiles and Sofia stops unpacking.
“Leader of the Santos out on good behaviour? You must be joking.” She snorts.
“Look, Sofia, I made a mistake. I’m aware and I was doing some real soul searching in prison and-“
“Oh, spare me, Oscar. Don’t start with that bullshit, you did some soul searching in juvie. Yet look at where we are now. So, excuse me, but I’m not about to start believing your lying ass.” She yells. She’s so angry at him and at herself too. She thought she got over this. But this unpleasant surprise really threw her off.
“I know. How was Europe?” He switches the theme, hoping to get her in a better mood.
“Good.”
“Is that all you’re going to say?”
“What am I supposed to say, Oscar, hm? You haven’t been here for three years. Am I supposed to tell you who was there with me? The names won’t tell you anything. It’ll just be an empty story and I refuse to use empty words on someone that will not understand what this trip meant not just to me but everyone that was present there.”
Oscar puts his hands up in surrender and leaves Sofia alone in the house. As soon as the front door closes, she sinks to the floor and starts crying. She hates herself for feeling so much at the near sight of him. And she hates herself more when she glances at the floor and a picture of a smiling couple is staring at her. She bites her lip, puts the frame on her nightstand and calls her boyfriend.
[September 2015]
Cesar started his first year of high school. Sofia is so proud of the young man he has become. But she has noticed that since Oscar returned, Cesar is more involved with the Santos. But because his legal guardian is back, she doesn’t have much of a choice but to stay out of it. She hasn’t spoken to Oscar since she returned from Europe and Cesar moved back in with his brother. She was adamant on staying as far away from him. In return she also distanced herself from Cesar and that hurt – more her than him. In the three years he lived with her, he became her little brother and she was ready to do anything for him. She still was. She cursed herself as she walked in the backyard of Oscar’s house. He was working on his Impala, like old times. She knocks on the opened garage doors and he quickly spins around, to look who disturbed him. His hard gaze softens when he sees her.
“Princess. What brings you here?” He smiles, bringing two barrels and sits on one of them. He lights up the cigarette and offers her one. She still doesn’t smoke.
“I took care of Cesar while you were away and he was advancing – in class and socially. He has a future beyond the Santos and he deserves a better life than this.” She motions to the small house and backyard. Oscars posture changes.
“Better than mine, that’s what you mean?” He interjects.
“Yes. Oscar, you made your bed and there is no turning back, but it’s not too late for Ce-“ She doesn’t finish as Oscar stands up so quickly, the barrel falls on the floor with a loud thud.
“You’re saying it’s too late for me?” He yells at her.
“It’s been too late for you, the second you took over the Santos!” She yells back.
“Not all of us had a choice like you, sweetheart. So drop that condescending tone or get the fuck off my property.”
“That’s my point. Cesar does have a choice, if YOU let him.”  She punctuates with a tap on his bare chest and walks away. He always thought it was amazing how one person could infuriate him so much. In his rage he grabs the barrel and smashes it at the wall of the garage as soon as Sofia’s out of earshot. His breathing is hard and he lights up another cigarette. It’s then, that Cesar walks in the backyard and Oscar takes him around the neighbourhood. Screw Sofia and her patronizing tone and innuendos. He knows what’s best for Cesar. He can’t let his baby brother look or be weak. And he has a plan in place to make sure that no matter what happens to him, Cesar will be taken care off, without Sofia’s help this time.
[November 2015]
Sofia was awoken by her phone that has been ringing for over three minutes. Whoever was calling her was determined. She rubs her eyes and grabs the phone and screams into it.
“Whoever is calling me better be fucking dying!”
“Sofia…please come back. I-I really need you to be here.” Cesar’s voice shakes as he whispers.
“Cesar? What’s happening? Where are you? Are you safe?” Her hands start shaking. She could feel how scared he was.
“It’s Oscar. H-He wants me to…”
“Just stay where you are, I’ll be there in 30 minutes.” Sofia quickly puts on a shirt and jeans. Ewan groggily gets up and stares at his girlfriend that is throwing clothes on in a maddening pace.
“Sof, what are you doing? It’s midnight.” He yawned.
“It’s Cesar…” Sofia answers without looking at him. Ewan quickly gets up as well and starts putting on his own clothes.
“What are you doing?” Sofia stops and looks at him.
“I’m not letting you go alone. And I don’t want to hear anything else from you.” He pecks her cheek and offers her his hand. Soon they’re speeding through the city and Sofia looks at her phone intensely, following the small dot on her screen – Cesar’s phone.
“Stay here.” Sofia instructs Ewan and jumps out of the car, running to the red Impala and sees Oscar handing something (a gun probably) to Cesar. She’s next to Cesar’s window in mere seconds, grabbing the gun out of Cesar’s hands and dismantling it.
“Hell no.” Sofia hisses and glares daggers at Oscar. He glares back at her, his nostrils flaring and he’s trying so hard not to yell and attract unwanted attention.
He looks back at the intended target and sees that Latrell already left the park. Oscar gets out of the car and marches to Sofia. It’s the first time since she’s known him that she’s afraid. She takes a step back but stills as she sees Cesar, completely in shock at what was just asked of him.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?! You think you can just stick your nose in Santos business?!” He screams at her.
“What’s wrong with me? What’s wrong with you?! How dare you do this to Cesar?! I get it, Oscar, you’re back and Cesar is your responsibility, but I took care of him on my own for three years while you were locked up and I care for him. And I will fight you every second at every corner, if you try to derail his life, like you fucked up yours!” She screams back at him. She realizes then that Oscar is not paying attention to her anymore; he’s looking at Ewan that has been standing near you two since Oscar left the car.
“Is that the reason why you’re suddenly so high and might about our life?” Oscar whispers.
“Don’t blame this on him; I have been vocal about you in the gang for the last 10 years. You refused to listen to me and I couldn’t help you. But I’m not letting you screw Cesar up. Cesar, come on. You’re coming with Ewan and me.”
“Wh-“ Oscar begins, but Sofia interrupts him.
“He’s old enough to make his own choices.”
“I’m going with Sofia.” Cesar says softly, before turning his back to Oscar.
“How could you ask this of Cesar when you’re so stoned I can smell you from 10 feet away. Get your fucking life together, Oscar and stop screwing up others.” Sofia says disappointed and follows Cesar and Ewan to the car and they speed away, leaving Oscar alone in the middle of the street.
[End of November 2015]
So many people are dead. So many people died…all because Sofia put doubt in Cesar’s head. She made a coward out of him. Oscar is kicking, punching and throwing things left and right. All he sees is red. He’s been seeing red for so long, but now, the redness of the world is overflowing, literally. He collapses on the floor, when the front door opens and Cesar walks in. Oscar is on his feet in seconds punching Cesar square in the jaw.
“Are you aware what you have done? What you have started?” Oscar yells and grabs Cesar’s collar. Cesar is crying, scared out of his mind. What he saw at the quince and what happened after and now Oscar’s face filled with rage and contempt.
“Get your things and get out of here.” Oscar says and releases his younger brother, walking into his own room, slamming the door behind him. Sofia…she’s the reason this has happened. She’s the reason why his younger brother is now unprotected from the Prophets. He’s searching his closet for one specific picture. He finds it but he can’t bring himself to tear it apart. So he stares at the picture. His arms around her, giving her a small kiss on the cheek as she smiles at the camera. The first ever date they had, just before he went to juvie. She refused to go out with him again. It took him three years to convince her to give him another chance and then the police came. He had a plan then. He was going to put the gang life behind him, it wasn’t too late for him then. Together they were supposed to take Cesar to a safe place. It wasn’t supposed to be like this, she wasn’t supposed to save Cesar from him. Finally, he breaks down and he realizes all he has are missed opportunities, wrong choices and so much rage. He doesn’t want to live like this. But he picks himself up, dusts himself off and puts the picture in the back of the closet, away from everyone’s eyes.

Where I Belong - Oscar “Spooky” Diaz
Tumblr media
Pairing: Oscar “Spooky” Diaz x reader
Requested: Yes.
Prompts: None.
Warnings/notes: This was requested by an anon like two weeks ago but I accidentally deleted the ask so I hope the person who requested cheating Oscar sees this. I don’t peg Oscar for the cheating type seeing how seriously he takes loyalty, so I made a slight twist to it and didn’t make him directly cheat. I hope it’s okay anyway. Let me know what you think xx Not proofread!
Wordcount: 3807
Summary: Trouble in paradise, ‘nough said.
"Are you gonna forgive him?" The question you had been dreading this entire morning finally came.
You heaved a sigh, staring into the ceiling and twisting your hands where they laid intertwined on top of your stomach.
Next to you, Maricruz laid, your best friend of ten years and as of almost a year back, Sad Eyes girlfriend.
"I don’t know." You answered her honestly, eyebrows creasing together as you thought her question over.
"Well, you better decide soon because I overheard Veronica talking about taking him back." She shrugged beside you.
When hearing her words you instantly turned your head to look at her, finding her in a position identical to your own; her legs up against the walls, her hands clasped over her stomach and eyes staring into the plain, white ceiling above you.
“Take him back?” You snorted, shaking your head. “One does not take Spooky back, especially not when they were barely even an item. And even so, he wouldn’t want her even if she paid him. He hates her annoyingly fake ass.”
She turned to look at you during the time you spoke, meeting your hard look with sad eyes. “Wouldn’t be so sure, babes.” She sighed. “There’s no being in this world as irrational as a lonely, heartbroken man. They’re a breed of their own.”
“Now you’re being dramatic. We just had a fight. Our hearts are fine.” Your eyes hardened, your entire body turning defensive. But in the middle of it, you caught yourself, asking yourself whether or not you actually believed your own words.
And Maricruz seemed just as confused about the entire situation, tilting her head slightly. “What was the fight even about?”
You turned your gaze back up to the ceiling as you thought back to the fight you’d had the night before, the memory still fresh in your mind.
“I don’t even know what we are anymore! Sometimes I feel like we’re really close but then on other days you treat me like I’m just an acquaintance or some sort of unwanted stranger. Can you just make up your mind already? It’s making me go insane!”
You remembered your own words as clearly as if you’d spoken them just then, the feelings you had been feeling last night coming rushing back again.
Without looking back to your friend, you simply shook your head as you came back to reality, pushing the memory back to the back of your mind.
“I don’t even remember.” You answered quietly, lying straight through your teeth.
Now when thinking back to it, it was all so ridiculous and it shouldn’t even have become as big of a deal as it had. You knew that speaking openly about the reason behind your fight would have made you look like a literal psychopath.
Maricruz obviously didn’t buy your poor lie, but she didn’t press the matter any further. “So you are going to forgive him?” She asked, and your head instantly whipped around to face her.
“I didn’t say that.” You defended, and she raised an eyebrow.
“Not directly, no.” She agreed. “But you insinuated it by calling it just a fight. And the fact that you can’t even remember its origin just shows even more that it’s not a big deal.”
“I just-“ You sighed, cutting yourself short and pulling your hands over your face with a sigh. “I haven’t woken up without him in three years. It feels wrong. I miss him.”
Maricruz reached her hand out to touch your arm in a comforting manner. “I know, boo. You should go talk to him.” She said and with another sigh, you brought your hands away from your face and nodded.
“Yeah, you’re probably right. We both said some shit we shouldn’t have yesterday and I should apologize.” You agreed, turning back to look at her. “Can you come with me? Just in case it doesn’t go well and I need a ride home.”
She smiled. “I doubt that’s going to happen but of course I’ll come with you.” She started pushing herself up on the bed. “Let’s go right now.”
You shot her a grateful smile before wordlessly following her example and sitting up. You got changed out of your pajamas, sorted out your bed heads and put on some light makeup and five minutes later, you found yourself in the passenger seat of Maricruz’ car.
Another five minutes later, you were driving up in front of Oscar’s house. Your eyes instantly caught sight of the red Impala parked in the driveway, nerves starting to creep up on you as you realized he was home.
A small part of you had wished he wouldn’t be so that you got more time to figure out what the hell you were going to say. You had never walked away from a fight without solving it before and you had absolutely no idea how to handle it.
But at the same time, you knew it would be good to get it out of the way as quickly as possible. Partly because you knew the new lesson would be healthy for you, but also because you missed him and couldn’t wait to be back in his arms again.
With a nervous sigh, you undid your seatbelt and turned to your best friend. “Wish me luck.” You said and she wasted no time in nodding her head, smiling widely at you.
“Break a leg, babes.”
You turned back to the other side and opened the door to the car, stepping outside and shutting it carefully behind you.
You looked at the Diaz residence at the other side of the road, wondering if Oscar would still be sleeping seeing as it was only ten in the morning on a Saturday.
Turning back around, you leaned down to the open window of the car, giving Maricruz another worried look. “You’ll stay here, right? Just in case-“
“It’ll be fine.” She shot you down quickly, smiling comfortingly. “You worry too much. Go.” She waved her hands at you, shooing you away, and you nodded, turning back around.
Your feet started taking you toward your destination before you even got time to process their movements and you went with it, crossing the street.
“Remember protection when you have rough make-up sex!” Your friend yelled at you from the car.
Her words caused your neck to warm up, but nonetheless, you laughed to yourself, giving her both fingers over your shoulders without looking back.
But the laughter quickly died down in your throat when the sound of Oscar’s front door opening reached your ears, the blonde Latina you oh so despised walking out on the porch and into your field of view a second later.
You stopped right in your tracks at the sight of her, your blood turning cold in your veins, your muscles stiffening and your heart feeling about ready to explode in your chest.
Feeling your fierce glare directed at her, Veronica looked up from her bag which she had been rummaging through, instead meeting your gaze.
Her lips almost instantly tugged into a smirk and slowly, she backed into the house again. You listened to the door close and took that as your cue to turn back, too, rushing back to the car with long, urgent steps.
You wasted no time in getting back into the passenger seat, slamming the door shut and squeezing your hands shut tightly in a desperate attempt to keep the building tears at bay.
“Drive, drive, drive.” You begged Maricruz without looking away from the road in front of you, and she did as told, starting the car back up and driving back onto the road.
As she began driving, you glanced down into the review mirror just in time to see Oscar coming out on the porch, only dressed in a pair of shorts.
You watched his face fall at the sight of the familiar car, the last things you saw before turning a corner being him storming back inside, with Veronica in tow.
“I’m so sorry, (Y/N).” Maricruz reached her hand over the console to grab yours once you were out on another street.
You swallowed back the lump in your throat, the tears stinging your eyes finally spilling over the edge and rolling freely down your cheeks.
“Just drive, please.” You sniffled, lip wobbling.
Maricruz nodded her head, glancing sadly at you where you were still keeping your eyes forward. “Okay.” She answered simply, letting her thumb rub over your knuckles just like Oscar always did, and that’s all that was needed to make you break down right then and there.
Three days later, you found yourself in Sad Eyes backyard, watching the man you loved more than anyone else in the world get felt up by the girl he had once convinced you that he hated more than anyone else in the world.
And he wasn’t looking like he was enjoying it one bit, so you just couldn’t wrap your head about why he would go through all the trouble of being with her.
Since catching them together three days ago when you had gone to his house to apologize, you had been crying non-stop, poor Maricruz having had to stay by your side through every little tear.
You thought it would break you to see him again, but now, on the evening she had finally managed to drag you out of the house for the first time since, all you could feel was pure, red anger as you watched the scene unfold before you.
“Are you sure you don’t want him back?” Maricruz asked from beside you for what seemed to be the tenth time in the past five minutes.
Your gaze didn’t waver from where Oscar was sitting at the other side of the lawn with his Santos and… Veronica. You couldn’t even think her name without disgust.
“I’m never sure of anything. Especially when it’s about him.” You answered your friend sourly. “I used to find that quite exciting but now it’s just torture.”
You took a generous gulp from your drink, not even cringing at the strong alcoholic taste at this point from how used you had gotten to it throughout the night.
Maricruz looked at you from her seat beside you and you could literally feel the disapproval radiating off of her body in your direction. “Do you love him?”
You snorted at the question, turning to look at her with an unimpressed look. “Do you even have to ask?” You asked.
She nodded. “How much?”
“Does it matter?”
You raised the glass to your lips, taking another, smaller sip.
“Why doesn’t it?” She questioned back, raising an eyebrow at you.
Sighing, you turned your gaze to the glass in your hand, watching the cubes of ice twirl around in the sickly green apple drink. “Because it wasn’t enough to make him stay.”
Maricruz sent you another sad look, reaching out to take your free hand in hers. “Look, I understand it might be hard for you to see it that way considering the circumstances and all, but everyone knows you’re the most important thing in Oscar’s life. He’s terrified to lose you, no matter how much he always tries to tell you that you deserve better than him.”
“What are you getting at?” You sent her a hesitant look; however, you couldn’t deny your body was getting warm at her words. But then again, that might have just been the alcohol.
In return, she sent you a small, smile and shrugged. “What if, just what if, he thought that he lost you? Had a severe lapse of judgment and wanted to numb the pain, because the thought of losing you was too much to him.”
Your eyes began stinging, the anger and heartbreak battling in your mind. “He still shouldn’t have gotten with her the same night, though.” You pointed out.
She smiled sadly. “We both know he’s not good at handling his emotions. Especially not sad ones. He had to grow up way too quickly and his head is a mess, you were always his rationality and you took all of the rational with you when you left.”
You swallowed, knowing that she was right.
“Let me ask you something. Knowing what you do now, if you could do it again, would you meet him again for the first time, or would you walk away?”
Your eyes flickered back over to Oscar where he sat, your gaze trailing over his profile, his tattoos, his entire stature, and the hand that was resting on Veronica’s hip.
As if feeling your eyes on him, he turned his head away from the conversation he had been listening in on and looked over to you, and when your eyes met his, your mind instantly traveled back to all of the moments you had spent together.
You remembered all of the countless nights you had spent in bed together, one night in particular when he’d gotten a bit too drunk on his birthday and passed out on top of you.
You had been crushed under the weight of his passed out body, his loud snores being the only sound you could hear with his mouth right by your ear and the smell of cigarettes, alcohol and sweat in combination of his body weighing down on your lungs almost making you unable to breathe, but you had still loved every second of it.
You remembered being in the shower together, both of you grinning mischievously as water sliced over you. You had thrown foam at him as a response to him pinching your ass and he had held his hands up in defense.
In all your playful glory, you managed to slip and when he hurried to catch you, he, in turn, slipped too. The bruise on your ass lasted a month and Oscar cut his eyebrow at the edge of a shelf; a scar that still remained to this day.
You remembered the countless of walks you’d taken along the beach. Whenever you woke up early, when you couldn’t sleep at night, or just whenever you got some time to spare throughout the day, walking along the shore, fingers intertwined and arms swinging between you.
You recalled all of the evenings you cooked together, struggling to push past each other in the small kitchen of his house and bickering about who’s turn it was to cut the onions until Cesar would bravely step up and do it just to get the two of you to shut up.
The memory faded and took you to just the other week when he had come with you to the nail salon after a lot of persuasion, where he had begrudgingly picked a color, held your jacket and bag, and sat through the entire process despite wanting to be anywhere but there.
And then just the night before that ridiculous fight had taken place, you had been peacefully curled up in front of the TV together, you laying on his chest while some bad cartoon aired and he absentmindedly peeled and fed your pistachios.
You then thought back to the fight, how you had gotten mad at him for not giving you enough attention in all your raging glory, and told him you were done before walking out.
Having been so caught up in the heartbreak and anger, you hadn’t really realized until now that you were the one who had pushed him away, not the other way around.
In the end, he was the one who had made the active choice to get with Veronica the same night, but the more you thought about it, the more you found that Maricruz was right.
He always wanted you to pick a better life for yourself, so of course, he wouldn’t run after you when you walked out. For him, that would be the equivalent of chaining you down and keeping you hostage.
On the contrary, you realized now that he would do everything in his power to make sure that you moved on, and even go as far as to get with someone he could barely stand being around.
He always talked about how you deserved better and the only thing keeping him from pushing you away when you were together was the fact that he loved you too much to let you go. After the fight, he must have seen his chance and taken it.
But that was not his choice to make.
Now seeing the obvious logic behind his actions, although very poorly chosen, you became determined to show just how much he didn’t have the right to make those kinds of choices for you, and putting Veronica in her place would just be a bonus.
Pulling yourself back to reality, you put the drink down on the table next to you and headed right for them without answering your friend, hearing her cheering you on from behind.
Your eyes remained hard and your steps were nothing short of determined as you approached them, something the Santos immediately picked up on judging by the amused looks crossing over their faces.
They could recognize the fierce look of their leader’s ruca from miles away and know without a doubt in their minds that you weren’t there to play nice.
Oscar looked up at you when the conversation came to a halt and he noticed your presence, his bored eyes meeting yours and suddenly turning soft.
Behind you, Maricruz sneaked past and got situated in Sad Eyes’ lap, waiting impatiently to see how the scene would unfold with the rest of them.
Veronica obviously noticed your presence with the way everyone, Oscar included, was now staring right at you, but still, she just had to be her usual bitchy self and pretend like she had no clue, only looking up at you when you cleared your throat.
A feign surprised look crossed over her features, eyes widening innocently. “Oh, I didn’t see you there!” She said, and you had to really force yourself not to laugh out loud when you noticed Oscar rolling his eyes.
“Can I help you?” She asked, chewing her gum in an annoying manner, the vexing sound only causing your glare to harden along with the way she so obviously pressed herself further down onto your boyfriend’s lap.
“Yeah.” You snapped, crossing your arms over your chest. “You can get out of my seat.”
She let out a soft laugh. “Oh, I don’t think so, honey-“
“I said-“ You interrupted, taking a dangerous step closer, uncrossing your arms and leaning down to her height. “You’re. In. My. Seat.”
The Santos were all watching with amusement, holding back their laughs at the sight of you getting all up in her face. Oscar was smirking along with the rest of them, watching you handle the situation proudly.
“I’d listen to her if I were you.” Sad Eyes spoke up from underneath Maricruz, chuckling lightly, and the girl in question joined in with a nod of her head. “Messed the last hyna up pretty bad when she tried moving in on her man.”
Veronica squinted her eyes at them but didn’t answer, instead turning to Oscar and wrapping her arms around his neck.
“Are you not going to say anything?” She questioned sweetly, and you watched with a smug expression as he just smirked at her and reached his hand up to pull her arms away.
“Nah.” He answered simply, bringing the bottle of beer in his hands to his lips and taking a small sip before continuing, all while maintaining eye-contact. “You’re in her seat.”
She scoffed, looking at him for a moment longer, before standing up and marching off to God knows where, leaving his lap open.
He still smelled of her expensive perfume as you slid into his arms, causing you to scrunch up your nose in disgust, but still, you made yourself comfortable, leaning back into his chest and letting him wrap his arms around you from behind.
The feeling of his face nuzzling your neck while the others returned to their previous conversation caused your body to flood with warmth, but the anger remained as you glared forward and crossed your arms over your chest.
“This doesn’t mean you’re forgiven.” You muttered bitterly.
But all he did was press a feather-light kiss to your bare shoulder, mumbling against your skin. “I know.”
“You’re going to have work really fucking hard to earn my trust again.” You continued.
“I know.” He answered again, simply, while pressing another kiss to your skin.
“And that’s not going to b-“
“I know.” He interrupted you, repeating himself again and lifting his face from your shoulder. When he did so, you turned your head to the side and met his soft eyes with a glare.
But he wasn’t even slightly bothered, looking at you with a sincere expression. “I’ll fight for you for as long as it takes, mamas. I’m sorry. We’ll talk more later, ¿vale?”
You understood why he would want to put the conversation on hold; it wasn’t one to be held by the prying ears of the Santos.
It didn’t matter that they already knew he had a soft spot for you and accepted it; he couldn’t be having relationship discussions out in the open. Not only would it make him look vulnerable if the wrong people caught him with his guard down, but it would also paint a target on your back.
So you took what you could get, for now, knowing that everything that had happened over the course of the last few days was partly your fault, too. But still, stubborn as you were, you hummed bitterly in response.
“Okay.” You replied lowly, letting your body relax ever so lightly, your arms uncrossing from over your chest.
Oscar gave you a nod, bringing his free hand up to your cheek to pull you down to him. He pressed a quick kiss to your lips before pulling back away and pressing his forehead against yours. “Te amo, mi vida.”
You let your eyes remain closed, basking in the moment and treasuring the feeling of his arms finally around you again.
“I love you, too.” You replied quietly, thankful that the Santos respected Oscar enough to mind their own and give you the privacy you needed.
Opening your eyes, you gave him a stubborn look, searching his eyes and analyzing his face as you added: ”But I still hate you.”
He only chuckled, leaning in and pressing another quick kiss to your lips, pulling away with a sincere smile and replying a quick: “Sé.”, before hugging you closer to his chest, returning his attention to the conversation taking place around you.
You knew that the conversation was far from done and that both of you had to apologize for a lot of shit, but for now, you were just happy to be back in his arms where you belonged.

CHAPTER 2
Tumblr media
(I know I took quiet a minute to post this but I lost my drafts in my old phone cause it fell in water 😭 and I didn’t back anything up but it’s here it also took a while cause I don’t really like how it turned out im having major writers block so some feedback would be great ps. Thank you for the likes and reposts it means a lot to me
I couldn’t sleep all night after Cesar told me that Oscar is getting out tomorrow. I don’t know what to expect or what’s gonna happen. I cuddled up on the couch as I thought back to when Oscar and I were younger. Him and I had always known each other, not personally but my house was down the street from his, so when I would walk to school, I would walk past his house . As we got older, Oscar and I always exchanged glances but we never talked.
I had never even told my friends about the glances that we shared, he didn’t tell his friends either, it was just something between us. I can still remember when one day I saw him with those beautiful dark curls and the next day it was all gone. Or when I saw his Santos tattoo for the first time.
I always thought Oscar was attractive but I wouldn’t ever dare act on it. He was a santo and I was a goody two-shoes, I never thought he was interested in me. I was the complete opposite of the ideal girl for him in the position he was in as a santo. But he didn’t care about that. He was different. He is different.
But, I’m concerned about how Oscar getting out is gonna affect Cesar. He seemed real distant after he told me that Oscar is getting out. I’m scared about what’s gonna happen
Cesar and another santo went to pick Oscar up, I didn't want to stick around for when they would come back so I decided to go to my mom’s house.
“Mija, you can't hide here forever. You’ll have to face him eventually” my mom stated softly as she stroked my hair lovingly.
“I thought you didn’t want me anywhere near him” I stated as I turned to look at her.
“And I don’t, I told you multiple times when you were a teen not to go anywhere near him and that he was no good for you but look where we are now “
I rolled my eyes with a sigh, “ I have Tony, he’s good for me, isn’t he?”
“Well, from what you’ve told me he is but I’m your mom, I know you don’t love him”
“I don’t know how to leave him, he’s been so good to me but he’s just not-“
“He’s not Oscar “ she started cutting me, “ You’re gonna hurt him if you keep lying princess”
“I told myself I’d learn to love him and I will, it’s just taking a while”
My phone buzzed and I looked to see it was a notification from Cesar
Cesar💙: he’s out.. we’re heading back now
I turned my phone off and told my mom I was going to my room. I was gonna relax and take a nice bath and everything was gonna be fine.
I was writing in my journal when I heard a knock on my door and my mom opening the door halfway.
“Caesar is here to see you ,” she smiled softly and patted Cesar on his shoulder.
“ Hey, Cesar” I said to him as I put my notebook in my bedside drawer.
I saw his eyes looked red and I tugged his wrist to sit down on my bed.
“What happened, what’s wrong?”
“Oscar is forcing me into the gang, I don't want to Y/N..”
We both knew this was gonna happen even before Oscar got arrested.
“Do you want me to talk to him even though I really don’t want to see him but you know I’d do anything for you..”
“We both know nothing's gonna change his mind, I’m scared of him, I don’t think even you could change his mind..He asked about you, I think he wants to see you”
I rolled my eyes but I’m not gonna lie and say that didn’t warm my heart. My mom knocked on my door telling me that she was gonna do a quick run at the store and then pass by Geny’s house. My mom and her were very close practically sisters. Cesar and I talked but then he got a message from Oscar so I walked him to the door, but when I opened it, I felt my heart beat a million times more..there he was the love of my life, Oscar Diaz.
Cesar cleared his throat and started walking out “I’ll wait in the car”
The 1966 Cherry red Chevy Impala. Oscar and I share a lot of memories together in that car.
“You’re not gonna give me a welcome home hug”
I finally looked up at him.
“I’m seeing someone Oscar” I stated as I crossed my arm, and looked down. As much as I wanted to hug him and kiss him, I couldn’t.
He chuckled at this “Yea, I’ve heard, but he’s not me, you’re still mine Y/N..”
“Oscar, it’s not the same anymore”
“You can lie to yourself but we both know, you still love the way I still love you” he gently touched my chin and closed the door, leaving me to wipe away my own tears.

El Malo
CHAPTER 1
I already posted CHAPTER 2
Tumblr media
Oscar and I had been together since we were teens. Things were difficult for us but we always seemed to make it work. One couldn’t be without the other. I honestly don’t even know how he convinced me to go on a date with him. We were so different, he was the bad guy and I was the good girl.
He failed me, he told me that he wasn’t gonna do anything bad and I trusted him and then he got locked up and was sentenced to eight years. It hurt having to see him through a glass window that separated us. I only visited him once cause I felt betrayed but I took Cesar whenever I could. I promised him that I would take care of Cesar until he got out of jail and I kept that promise.
Its been four years since he got arrested and a three years since I last visited him..
(Flashback)
It took me almost ten months after Oscar got arrested to finally come see him. My heart was pounding in my chest when our eyes met, no emotions behind those brown eyes as they brought him in and un cuffed his hands. I picked up the phone as he sat and did the same.
“Hey..’’, I said not knowing what to say after not seeing him for almost a year taking in all of his features, him doing the same.
“Hey baby, how’ve you been?’’ He asked, his eyes softening.
“I’ve been okay and you? How is it in there?” I asked him not being able to hide how concerned I was.
“Don’t worry about me, nena, Cesar told me you moved into the house, he’s not giving you any trouble is he..?”
I smiled a little at this.
“No, he’s actually been doing really good in school and helps me around the house..”
“That’s good..” he said as silence filled the air.
“Y/N..” He said my name so tenderly and put his hand against the glass. I felt my eyes getting teary as I looked at him.
“You lied to me, you told me you loved me and you lied about everything-“
“I do, I meant what I said.” He stated cutting me off
“You can’t love me from here, you never have! You never have! ” I raised my voice as a tear rolled down my cheek.
“I’m sorry, I know I failed you, I’ve made mistakes” he said as his hand slid down the glass.
“Mistakes?” I asked with a scoff, more tears running down my face.
“Si, si, errores, pero eso no tiene nada que ver con amor, it’s been a disaster but I’ve always loved you, I still love you, I always will”
“Stop, stop, I can’t” I slammed the phone and got up, I could feel his eyes on me the entire time until I walked out the door.
(End of Flashback)
My eyes watered remembering that day as I looked out the window of Dwayne’s Joint BBQ. I started seeing someone about a year ago, after I unofficially broke up with Oscar. His name is Tony and he’s the complete opposite of Oscar, I hate myself for always comparing him to Oscar. It’s almost as if he doesn’t have any flaws, he seems too perfect for me.
“Earth to Y/N!” I snapped out of the trance I was in when I saw Tony waving his hand in my face.
“Sorry, must’ve spaced out” I forced a chuckle out as I blinked rapidly to clear my eyes of any tears.
Tony smiled, “What’s going on in that head, amor?”
“Nothing, just thoughts”I stated bluntly as I looked over to see Dwayne putting the check on the table with the food that I ordered for Cesar to go.
“Thanks Dwayne” I looked up at him with a smile as Tony handed him the money.
“No, thank you tell Cesar I said hey “
“I’ll let him know, bye”
Tony and I walked out holding hands walking towards his car. When we got inside I saw three men with Santos tattoo on their neck staring my way. I tried my best to ignore them but their intense stares made me want the ground to swallow me whole and I know Tony felt intimidated.
They made it their lives mission to always try and intimidate Tony whenever they saw him.
“I’m sorry about that” I apologized as I looked over at him as he drove to Oscar’s house.
“ You don’t have to apologize, I get that they don’t like me much”
The entire ride was filled with an uncomfortable silence..at least for me until we got to Oscar’s house.
“Thanks, I really enjoyed today” I said with a small smile.
“I’m glad, I really did too” he stated as he looked like he wanted to say something else but didn’t know how to say it.
“What? Is something wrong?” I asked confused.
“C-can I kiss you?” He asked tenderly
He always asked even the first time we got intimate. He’s very vanilla and I’m so used to something else I didn’t really like it. I tried going rough one time and he didn’t like it so I stopped. I thought about cutting him off but I didn’t want to hurt his feelings.
“Yea, of course” I told him as I forced a smile.
He got closer and closed the distance between our lips. I forced my eyes shut and moved my lips against his. He was gonna deepen the kiss but then there was a knock on the window making us jump and look to the side to see who the culprit was.. Cesar. I thanked him with my eyes and he looked at me with a knowing look.
Tony rolled the window down as I got out and greeted Cesar. He forced a tight lipped smile and waved.
“Bye, Thanks again Tony “ I waved as he reluctantly drove off into the road. I put my arm on Cesar’s shoulder as we walked inside the house.
“So, how was the visit with Oscar ?”
“Umm, good, I actually have something to tell you..”
“Oh yea, what is it, is something wrong?”
I asked as we walked into the house and I leaned on the couch, watching as he scratched the back of his neck nervously.
“Cesar, come on, spill it”
“Um, Oscars getting out tomorrow”
I felt my heart stop and my vision become blurry.
“What?”

[July 2016]
After seeking shelter with Sofia and Eric, Cesar tried living as a normal life as possible. But after causing so much tension with the couple, Cesar left. He started hiding with anyone that would offer him a roof over his head. And then the whole Little Ricky manhunt began.
Sofia was livid, she was in the middle of her summer exams, because she didn’t pass her regular ones due to the whole debacle. After Eric and her decided to call it quits she stormed back to Freeridge, assaulting Oscar’s front door.
“Why are you making my life so fucking complicated?” She asks as Oscar opened the door. He hasn’t seen her since November at the funeral.
“What did I do this time?” He groans, already knowing he’s getting an earful. But then she surprises him as she breaks down in front of him.
“Why did you have to go to prison?” Sofia asks as tears flow freely down her cheeks and she hugs herself, even though it’s over 95 degrees outside. Oscar stands in front of her in complete shock. He has seen her cry in the past, but it was never like this. He cautiously extends his arm towards her, softly taking her hand in his and leads her inside the house.
He makes her lemonade with a few mint leaves inside, crushing them so they release the fresh and cool flavour. She’s calm, but the salt from the tears makes her skin itch.
“Hablame.” Oscar’s knuckle softly grazes over Sofia’s cheek. She tells him everything. She yells and whispers and cries. And then when all is said, she kisses him. He lets her.
She leaves his house in the dead of night, clutching her sides at what she did. She hates herself for caving in. And she promises herself she’s never going to do this to herself. Now that Cesar is out of her life as well, she can finally cut ties with Freeridge, Santos and Oscar.
She passes all her exams and focuses on her future, away from California. Besides, she always hated the heat.
[May 2017]
Sofia is cleaning her apartment. Her thesis is done and she’s officially a Master of Chemistry. She loves her new title. Now she decides what she’ll do and where she’ll go. She is finally free. A knock at her door startles her. She’s not expecting anyone. All her friends left last week. She cautiously peeks through the peephole and groans. He’s injured again. She throws her front door open.
“What now?” she says loudly. Oscar takes a step to her, closing the distance between them and kisses her.
“I’m done. I’m done with everything. And I just want you and adult problems.” He says as he lets go of her lips. Her face is flooded with different emotions and he smiles as her lips twitch and her face contorts. He sees how her mind is racing as everything is written on her face. She suddenly smiles, her entire face lighting up and she jumps on him, knocking him off balance. So they lay on the cold floor in the middle of the hallway and she reaches for his hand and they just hold each other, smiling and like all those years ago, an image flashes through their heads – of them, sitting on the Impala in a different place and staring at the sky.
[January 2018]
They celebrate the new year at her friend’s place. Their lease at the New York apartment is up. Oscar’s internship ended and they are starting the new year fresh. No plans.
Oscar revisited his dream of opening his own restaurant in July and Sofia asked for a favour to get him in a 6-month internship programme with one of the top chefs in the country.
He proposed to her in front of all their friends at midnight. She said yes.
[December 2019]
Together they travelled for a year, taking pictures, exploring the world, Oscar was trying to learn the cuisine from every corner of the world, and just be free with Sofia. Like he always wanted. Like they both always wanted. Sofia showed him all her favourite places in Europe and they discovered Asia and Africa together.
They returned back to America in February and settled in Toronto, where Sofia accepted a job at a pharmaceutical firm that was waiting for her. Oscar worked hard as well, taking odd jobs and networked as much as his time allowed. All savings went to one fund – the restaurant. He just opened it in November and named it Goya. He fell in love with the word in Pakistan because of the meaning. It is one of those untranslatable words, meaning the moment when fantasy is so realistic that it temporarily becomes reality. That is was he wants to achieve with his restaurant.
As Sofia listened to his pitch for the bank loan, she couldn’t help but smile. He let his hair grow, his curls finally showing again and he looked healthy, healthier than he has ever been. His voice changed and he smiled so much more often than he did. He looked happy, even with constant problems coming his way. This carefree man standing before her was the boy she fell in love with all those years ago.
“You are my Goya too, reina.” Oscar smiled at her, bending down and kissing her softly.
“And you mine.”
They tried getting in touch with Cesar several times during the two years, but he was clear that he didn’t want anything to do with the two of them. It saddened them, but at the end of the day, Cesar was an official adult and it was out of their hands. Neither one wanted to return to Freeridge, as now they had real adult problems – jobs, loans, aspirations…They did however promise themselves that they will keep trying to reach out. They knew Cesar was following Oscar’s footsteps, to both of their dismays, but they were hoping he’ll come to his senses quicker then Oscar. And when that happens they will be there for him. The life they are building in Toronto together, will be there for Cesar when he decides to come home.
Thank you for reading! 🙏💙
The GIF isn’t mine, belongs to the talented creator 🙏😊
And that’s the last part 😭😭😭 I cried so badly when he died in the show. I wanted to kick someones ass! He was just beginning to live his life and then they do this to him 😭😭😭 it needed to be corrected and this is my version of it 😊

[April 2010]
Sofia has been avoiding him for months and while that worked in school and even at home, she couldn’t avoid him on her birthday. Especially not when he used Cesar to make her open the front door. His little brother was her weakness and she wanted to punch Oscar for using it against her.
Feliz cumpleaños a ti
Feliz cumpleaños a ti
Feliz cumpleaños querida Sofia
Sofia opened the door, staring at the cuteness that was standing in front of her. She bent down and gave him a big thank you hug, inviting him and the stupid pendejo inside. Oscar was so smug when he passed her and the asshole even dared to give her a kiss on the cheek as he strutted inside, knowing full well she wouldn’t punch him in front of Cesar.
Oscar went straight into the kitchen and started unpacking the grocery bag.
“Our present is a homemade lunch. Oscar will cook and I will help. All you need to do, Sof, is to relax. We’re here to pa-pa-pam-pamper you.” Cesar struggled a bit with the last word but directed a big grin at her as he finished.
“I like the sound of that. So, what will you be making?” Sofia smiled down at the little guy.
“No, no, it’ll be a surprise. Just sit down and enjoy.” Oscar chipped in from the kitchen. She stewed in her anger as she fell into the couch, taking out her phone and started responding to the birthday wishes.
She was still sulking when Oscar called her to the dinning room, but her scowl fell as she saw what was on the table. She always knew that Oscar dreamt of bigger things, specifically being a cook, but given their history, she just assumed that was also a lie.
The three of them sat down and started eating. Cesar was the star of the show, happily babbled on and on about school and Sofia and Oscar just listened, smiling at him. In between the riveting story about the escaped bunny Oscar turned his attention to Sofia, covering her hand with his, breaking her focus as she glanced at the other man in the room.
“I have always pictured us like this. Sitting with Cesar, being a family.” He whispered. She wanted to slap him, but at the same time kiss him. Maybe both. This has been a weird experience, brining forth all the emotion that she has been actively pushing away.
“Can you give me another chance? I’ll do better, I promise.” He stared into her eyes and she nodded briefly as she observed him. It looked like he was being serious. Or maybe that’s what she wanted to believe. Oscar lifted her hand and laid one sweet kiss on the back of it.
“Guys, you’re not listening to me!” Cesar’s pouting yell broke them out of the little bubble they just shared and they returned the attention back to the important person in the room.
[February 2011]
Oscar was her New Year’s Eve kiss, making a resolution he’ll continue being better. That he’ll do right by her, making her realize he is the one for her, like she is the one for him. For almost a year he had kept his promise he made on her birthday. And she continued to believe him until he was charged with possession and went to prison for the first time in his life.
Six months.
She was crying as they dragged him away, cuffed. She was angry because she believed him. She was sad because she loved him and it broke her heart that she trusted him again.
[May 2012]
The first heatwave hit California and Sofia is cursing her parents for they have forgotten to pay for the repairs and now the A/C is not working. So, she’s stuck in a hot house, having to study for finals, while next door the Santos are having a pool party, with loud music and even louder people. Regardless, she’s determined to power through, the importance of these finals is too high to let some gangbangers have any power over the situation. She’s so close to getting the hell out of here. The scholarship to Princeton is practically in her hands and all she has to do is ace the finals, like she has done for three years in a row. She can do it. She knows she can. And then she can leave the gang life behind and be free. The earphones are in her ears, Mozart, Yiruma and Beethoven keeping her company and giving her strength to focus.
An hour in, the chemistry notes are smudging from the sweat that is present on her fingers and that is dripping from her forehead, the party is getting louder, her phone died because she forgot to charge it and she’s just about ready to go yell at someone, anyone that will cross her path of wrath. She gets up, puts her flip-flops on and marches next door. She goes straight for the cable that connects the stereo to the electricity and pulls it out. Everyone fell silent, looking at her.
“Yo, Sofia, not cool.” One of the Santos women says.
“Hey, Spooky, get your bitch on a leash.” A Santos man yells. Oscar gets up and walks to the guy. He steps right in his face and stares him down. Sofia is right next to him, pulling him away.
“For the last time, Oscar, I don’t need you to stand up for me.” She spat and turned to the loud guy.
“You know I wasn’t going to say anything when I saw you, but you kind of forced my hand. Pull your pants up, your entire ass is hanging outside and it's not a pretty sight.” She walked back to Oscar that was smirking.
“Keep it down, I’m trying to study.” She said and walked away. Just as she was about to enter the house, Oscar caught up to her.
“Wait, wait, wait, Sof. Listen, before you go off to whatever college you’re applying for, how about you finally let me take you on a proper date? I’ve been good, just like we talked when I got out. No police altercations at all. So, you kinda have to go. I believe that was your only condition.” Oscar sais, smiling wide.
“No illegal activities?”
“None.” He put a hand over his heart.
“Okay. Tonight at 8?” Oscar nodded with a smile and walked backwards.
“You won’t regret it, raina.” He said and disappeared next door. The music suddenly stopped and the people dispersed. Sofia finally had the time to finish her work for the day before the date. As she sat down and looked at her history notes she smiled and patiently did her work and counted down the minutes to 8.
[8 o’clock]
She’s putting on her favourite perfume and nervously/giddily looks herself in the mirror. Her heart is beating hard in her chest and she smiles, she’s happy. He’s trying. And that’s all she ever wanted. She thinks of how she’ll come home more often to see him. And how he’ll come visit her often, staying at her dorm. And them walking around New Jersey and New York. Visiting Toronto and all the lakes. Living life away from the gang. She stops herself. Now more nervous than before. The gang…will he leave it? What about Cesar?
The knock at her door saves her the despair and happiness fills her body again. He’s standing at the front door, a sunflower in his hand. Funny how he remembers the small things.
“You remembered?” Sofia smiles as she accepts the flower.
“It’s you. I remember everything that concerns you.” Oscar smiles back. He already plans on getting her a bouquet of them for graduation. He plans to be there. He plans to be there in the future, wherever she might be.
[The date]
They didn’t go far. He took her to his house, where he served her dinner he cooked. She loved his cooking and he knew it. He loved cooking too, especially for her. Both of them imagine life in a couple of months – her coming to the dorm and him coming from his job and just standing in the kitchen, cooking and talking. They don’t say these things; both of them know the other is thinking the same things. It’s quiet during the dinner. They eat and they have small conversations about this and that. Just enjoying each other’s presence, no big issues to be resolved as it has been in the past. Their lives are good, as they should be.
He escorts her to the car and opens the doors for her. They drive to the Point and lay on the hood of the Impala, gazing at the stars. She envisions them just like that in a couple of months and then in a couple of years and then much further down the line. He glances at her several times, smiling to himself, finally getting her here with him. It feels right. He bends down and kisses her.
The red and blue lights envelop them as the police car drives next to them. Oscar is calm as the policeman holds him in place as the other one searches the car. A thought creeps up Sofia’s spine and she hopes she’s wrong. She’s hoping and praying to the skies above that she’s wrong. That he’s changed, that he didn’t lie to her again. That he wouldn’t do that to her, especially not tonight. That she didn't fall for his bullshit yet again. Tears well up in her eyes as the policeman’s stills. She knows he found something. Before she can stop herself the tears fall and she looks at Oscar. He’s saying something – she bets he’s apologizing – but she can’t hear him. The policeman is dragging him away and he’s trying not to resist, he knows it’ll get worse if he does. But he needs her to hear him out. It was for her. What he did. It was for her and Cesar. It was supposed to be the last job…one of the last ones at least. He had a plan, he really did. He was to leave the Santos and go to New Jersey, get a job and be with her. It shouldn’t have gone down like this.
The police car drives away, with Oscar in the back seat, cuffed. That much drugs on his person…his second offence. He’s going to prison, this time for much longer than 6 months. And after the third strike, which will happen, she now has no doubt it will, he’s going away for life. Whatever hope she had for him was gone. The tears are dried up. She picks up the keys that fell from Oscar’s hands and drives back. Cesar shouldn’t be alone tonight.
[Three days later]
She forces herself to go to the hearing. Just to hear how long the sentence will be and to figure out what to do about Cesar. The hearing is short. It doesn’t surprise her; this was Oscar’s second offence. He’s a criminal, the leader of a gang no less, so he gets 4 years and something inside Sofia breaks.
Even before she forces herself to visit him in jail, she knows what he’ll ask of her. She will not be mad, because she already thought of it and already decided. When she sees him in the jumpsuit it takes all of her willpower not to scream at him, not to cry for him. He wasn’t supposed to be on the other side of the glass.
“Listen, I’ll be quick, because I know you just want to get out of here. I’m sorry.” Oscar says as he pickes up the other phone. Sofia wasn’t expecting an apology. An excuse, maybe, but not an apology.
“I’ll take care of Cesar. I’ll take him to visit you as much as my time will allow me. I’ll make sure he goes to school, that he does his homework, that he eats good and that he’s not jumped into the gang for as long as you’re here. But this is the last time you’ll see me.” Sofia puts her phone down and walks away. Oscar yells after her, but because of the soundproof glass, she doesn’t hear anything. At least that’s what he tells himself later when he’s lying in the bunkbed.
Thank you for reading! 🙏💙

I am so in love with this character - Oscar was easily the best part of On my block...though I might be biased 🤭😁

[June 2008]
Sofia awoke to the sounds of knocking on her window. She groggily walked to the window and unlocked it. Oscar climbed in and locked it again, while Sofia threw herself back under the covers of her bed. The bed then shifted and she heard him groan.
“What happened today?” She murmured.
“Don’t worry about it.” He replied and let out a small whine.
Sofia turned on the light and lifted the bed cover, revealing a bloodied Oscar.
“What the f-“ Oscar quickly put a hand over her mouth. She glared at him and he removed it, before she had a chance to bite him. She helped him up and they went to her bathroom where she sat him in the bathtub and let the warm water wash over him. He winced as the water made contact with his wounds. Sofia quietly went to gather First Aid supply and alcohol to disinfect the large gashes.
If she wasn’t born in such a neighbourhood, to such parents, none of this would’ve been a part of her life. But gang life was present in your life even if you weren’t actually part of it. In the years she has known Oscar she has become proficient in dressing and sewing all kinds of wounds. Her intolerance to blood vanished the first time he came to her window after his first big fight that ended up with him going to juvie the next day. His hands were covered in someone else’s blood, small specks of it were scattered over his whole body and he had a gaping wound in his midsection. When she saw him standing outside her window she didn’t want to let him in...Who would? But he was her best friend and looked so utterly lost. She realised he was just as scared as she was, if not more. She unlocked her window and clumsily sewed him up. He still has a scar there, which he proudly shows around when he compliments her.
After the wounds were dressed they went to sleep. Her back was turned to him and all he wanted was for her to turn around. But she has told him time and time again – she couldn’t and wouldn’t look at him, especially not after having him barging in her room completely bloodied. She once told him that sometimes she regrets meeting him. She didn’t mean it, but it just came out.
[Flashback to June 2000]
Little Sofia was playing with her friends in the park near the school after day-care ended. She saw a small boy sitting on the curb, hugging his knees. He was obviously crying even though he was trying to hide himself. She left her friends and sat in front of him. The little boy looked at her surprised.
“Don’t cry. It’s such a beautiful day, you can’t be sad on such a nice day.” She smiled at him. The little boy hid his face in his knees and let out a sob. She reached her hand over to his head and patted it. The boy flinched.
“What’s wrong?”
“Just leave me alone.” The boy said in a weak voice.
“Not until you tell me what’s wrong.” Little Sofia sat next to him and poked the little boy’s cheek. The boy refused to say anything so they sat in silence. Sophia’s friends came to say goodbye and wanted her to join them but she sat unmoved next to the little boy. The evening fell and the pair didn’t move.
“Why are you still here?” The boy asked as the sun started setting.
“You still haven’t told me what’s wrong, Silly. I said I will not leave until you tell me what’s wrong.” She smiled.
“I don’t know how to get home. My dad forgot to pick me up from school.”
“You silly goose, I can get you home. Come on.” Little Sofia smiled, stood up and offered him her hand. The little boy looked at her with dried tears on his cheeks and accepted her hand. They walked hand in hand home.
“What’s your name?” He asked as they were walking.
“Sofia. What’s yours?”
“Oscar.”
“Well Oscar, I’m your new friend and I’ll be there for you forever.” Little Sofia smiled and little Oscar smiled for the first time that week.
After that Oscar trusted her and sought her help whenever he was vulnerable. The first time was when he was jumped into the Santos two years ago, at age 13. Ever since then she has seen him less and less. Except at night when he knows he can’t go home to Cesar looking like he does at the present moment. So, Sofia turns around so she can’t see him and pretends like nothing has happened.
 [October 2008]
“You can’t claim me, Oscar. I’m not an object you can own!” Sofia yelled as she paced away from him. They were leaving a Santos party, where he openly claimed her, starting an avalanche of rumours.
“I did this for you, how can’t you see that?!” He yelled after her, jogging lightly to catch up with her. He grabbed her arm and stopped her, by spinning her to face him. He could see the tears welling up in her eyes. His expression softened.
“Come on.” He hugged her in the middle of the street, putting his head on top of hers.
“I’m sorry, but this was the only way.” He whispered to her. Deep down she knew it.
“Why is this happening to us?” Sofia cried in his chest. She wished they could be normal teenagers, trying to navigate the whole new world of emotions and urges.
“I’ll make it right, I promise.” Oscar stared at her as she pulled away from him. His hands cupped her cheeks and he brushed her tears away before bending down slightly to kiss her. She let him take her home after that.
“I love you.” He breathed in her parted lips. She loved him too, but she couldn’t say it at that moment. After that night she refused to see him for months. She couldn’t face him.
[March 2009]
She loved the rain. She always figured it was because she lived in Freeridge and rain was scarce, so she welcomed it whenever it did finally rain. She was perched up on the windowsill of her bedroom window when Oscar slapped a hand over the glass, making her scream in surprise and terror. She could see him laughing, completely drenched as he stood outside in the heavy rain. She opened the window and he climbed in.
“You’re such an asshole.” She slapped him over his arm and threw a towel at him to dry off with. He kept laughing as if he just pulled the best prank in the history.
“Calmate, Sofia. You looked so solemn before, at least now you’re scowling and your face is back to normal.” Oscar laughed, making her scowl deeper.
“What do you want, Oscar?” She rolled her eyes at him.
“Let me take you on a date.”
“I thought we were squared? You claimed me and I slept with you. Wasn’t that the deal?” He sat on the bed, lifting her face to look at him.
“I meant every word I told you that night. I love you, Sofia. I’ve loved you for years.” He kissed her lightly on the forehead. She closed her eyes, relishing in his closeness.
“I love you too.” She whispered, looking into his eyes.
They went out the next day. It was a nice, sunny day and they took their bikes to bike around, get ice-creams and milkshakes, overloading on sugar, laughing and bouncing off the walls.
He got into a fight with one of the Prophets during the night and went to juvie the next day again.
