Niku Wo Hagu is a oneshot manga about a trans man and his relationship with his father by Oto Tooda that was published in Shounen Jump+ back in 2019. it suddenly got a translation a few days ago and after reading it, hell yeah, i definitely recommend it

Niku wo Hagu is noteworthy because of its compassionate and honest handling of its subject matter, but it’s also just a great comic. the art is good, and there’s a brilliant balance of what’s said explicitly about versus what’s left unsaid. im not going to post it because it’s better to experience it for yourself, but the sequence about Chiaki’s recurring dream was the one that really got to me. i really hope to see more work from Oto Tooda in the future (incidentally he’s the artist for the “Middle School Arc” spinoff of Chihayafuru, so if you also would like to see more of his work, there you go)

i should give a heads up that body dysphoria is a very heavy theme, if you’re sensitive to that. hunting is also a prominent motif so if you’re squeamish to animal death and depictions of butchering you should also be aware

For academic purposes, how would you encompass what defines the Fujimoto School of Manga? And which mangas are it's major exposes? Thank you for your time.

I use it to describe the circle of Tatsuki Fujimoto + people who have worked with him as assistants and have influenced each other: Tatsuya Endo, Yukinobu Tatsu, Oto Tooda, Yuji Kaku, they all have found success in Jump and have a similar line of work that in some ways stands out from the more traditional Jump line. I feel the circle is gonna become pretty influential in the future.

I think there’s similarities story-wise when it comes to narrative, character writing, gender, violence, and comedy. Artistically I feel there’s a pretty strong cinematic influence and very elaborate production.

Chainsaw Man, Fire Punch, Look Back, Spy x Family, Niku wo Hagu,  Dandadan, and Jigokuraku are the most successful works.
