I have an idea for my own version of a Nezha retelling. It's based on this legend, and it goes something like this:

As per the original legend, Nezha killed Ao Bing when he was a little boy. The difference is, he was playing in Jiuwan River with Lady Yin, so when Ao Bing showed up acting violent, Nezha went all out to protect his mother. He also never returned Ao Bing's tendon. After Nezha kills himself in apology, Taiyi brought him back to life in an adult lotus flower body.

The story actually begins after the Deification War; it's a time of peace, and Nezha is very, very bored.

One day, he decides to bring Ao Bing back to life on a whim. He knows the spell because he had watched Taiyi do it for him as a stray soul. Nezha grabs three clumps of Tinospora Sinensis vines to represent Heaven, Man, and Earth, before stripping some Armand pine branches and arranging them in the shape of a dragon. He lays Ao Bing's tendon on top of this diagram and starts channeling his qi into it.

To Nezha's surprise, this actually works; Ao Bing comes back to life in a body of pine and vines. However, he has lost all his memory, and he's also stuck in a half-human, half-dragon state. He demands to know what's going on, and Nezha smiles and says, "Your name is Bailoong. I summoned you to be my servant!"

Now, Ao Bing may be amnesiac, but his personality is still the same. He doesn't believe Nezha because on a subconscious level, he knows he's royalty and therefore above being anyone's servant. Ao Bing distrusts Nezha on the spot and tries to escape, but he struggles to stand up properly on his dragon hindlegs, and he starts to panic as he can't figure out how to change. Nezha calmly takes Ao Bing's hands and instructs him to focus on his breathing, then imagine what human legs would feel like, and channel his qi to the lower half of his body. Ao Bing manages to do that, and when he looks down, he's standing on human legs. He's fully naked, too. Nezha jokes that maybe he should've stayed half-dragon, and Ao Bing angrily shoves him.

Taiyi finds out about this very quickly. He does not buy Nezha's "This is my new friend, Bailoong!" explanation for a single second. While Ao Bing is practicing water magic somewhere on Qianyuan Mountain, Nezha and Taiyi talk inside the Golden Light Cave. Nezha keeps trying to deny that Bailoong is Ao Bing until Taiyi threatens to call Ao Guang to verify his identity. That gets Nezha to admit the truth. Taiyi is angry of course because what Nezha is doing is really messed up. It may seem like a harmless prank right now, but keeping Ao Bing in the dark is going to have serious consequences. The right thing to do is to tell Ao Bing the truth. Nezha says not yet; Ao Bing is quite volatile at the moment, so if he finds out the truth, he might just get all four Dragon Kings to complain to the Jade Emperor, and Nezha and Taiyi will be in deep trouble. Taiyi reluctantly agrees to let Nezha decide when to tell Ao Bing the truth.

Nezha is friendly with Ao Bing and loves to tease him because his reactions are fun. Ao Bing stubbornly refuses to be a servant, though he will jump into action if he thinks Nezha is in trouble. Sometimes, Ao Bing will shapeshift into a small dragon or a snake and ride on Nezha's shoulders. He will never admit that he likes the chin-scratches Nezha gives him in those forms.

When Ao Bing goes in heat for the first time in the Golden Light Cave, Nezha is very eager to help. Flustered, Ao Bing yells at him to go away, and Nezha does leave...for five minutes. Then he comes back and asks if everything's alright yet, and Ao Bing just screams at Nezha to help him. Between dying as a child and reanimating into a Taoist lifestyle, Nezha has zero sexual experience, and there's Ao Bing who has no memory of how he's ever handled being in heat. It's a mess—one that requires both of them to be very vulnerable with each other to get through it. At the end, they almost kiss, but they're not quite there yet, so Ao Bing turns away at the last moment.

As time passes, Nezha becomes genuinely attached to Ao Bing. It's not a joke anymore; he really likes him and hopes he never leaves. Ao Bing has also come to trust Nezha a lot. However, he knows Nezha is keeping something from him, and as long as this secret exists, there will always be an insurmountable barrier between them.

Around the time Ao Bing is starting to think maybe it's okay if he doesn't remember his past, he runs into Li Jing. Same as the original legend—Li Jing and Nezha are on awful terms, which means the former has no idea what the latter has been doing lately. When Li Jing sees Ao Bing, he refers to him as the "Third Prince". Ao Bing asks to know more. Li Jing says, "The Third Prince of the East Sea was a dragon my son Nezha slayed in the river outside of our hometown, Chentang Pass."

Ao Bing travels to Jiuwan River, and when he sees his reflection in the water, all the memories flood back in his head. Feelings of betrayal (and heartbreak) hit him like a tsunami. He turns toward the sky and lets out an anguished dragon roar that can be heard all the way from Qianyuan Mountain.

Nezha grabs his weapons and jumps on his Wind-Fire Wheels immediately, thinking Ao Bing is in trouble. When he arrives at Jiuwan River, though, Ao Bing attacks him in dragon form.

Ao Bing: You lied to me! Nezha: Bailoong, please— Ao Bing: Don't call me that! My name...is AO BING!

Ao Bing couldn't defeat Nezha when he was a mortal child, and he can't defeat Nezha when he's a "sage in flesh", even though he has a new and stronger body himself. Nezha subdues Ao Bing with the Nine Dragon Divine Fire Coverlet. It's a cramped cage for a dragon, but Ao Bing's human form doesn't have the strength to break it, either.

"Was it not enough? Killing me and stripping my tendon? You had to make me your servant. Your pet," Ao Bing spat bitterly. "Ao Bing, I..." Nezha tried to choke back his tears; he couldn't. "I'm sorry. I really am. I never meant to hurt you. I've always wanted to tell you the truth—" "Then why didn't you?!" demanded Ao Bing, banging his fists on the cage. "Because I didn't want you to leave me!" cried Nezha. He breathed in shakily, and said in a fragile voice, "Ao Bing... I love you." "No. No!" Ao Bing covered his ears and turned away. "You're lying to me again! I know it!"

Nezha retrieves the coverlet, and he steps forward to hug Ao Bing's back. He has dropped all his weapons and put away his additional limbs. Nezha is fully defenseless, and rather than attack him, Ao Bing collapses into the hug. He loves Nezha too, even if he won't say it. Instead, he sobs that he wants to go home to his father. Nezha hugs him tighter, because he knows there's a chance he'll never see Ao Bing again if he leaves, but he also realizes he cannot bear to keep hurting Ao Bing, so finally, he lets him go.

Ao Bing still has some holes in his memory; he can't remember the way home. He has to tell a fish in Jiuwan River to pass along a message to the Dragon King of the East Sea that his third son is alive. When Ao Guang shows up, he is livid. He wants to sue Nezha and Taiyi in the court of heaven. However, Ao Bing talks him down from it. He says he's tired and just wants to go home. Ao Guang agrees, albeit begrudgingly. Once he's alone, Nezha cries over the river until the sun sets.

Taiyi is aware of everything before Nezha is even emotionally ready to tell him. He doesn't lecture because he can already see Nezha regrets his actions. Taiyi instead gives a bit of reassurance; he had seen how well Nezha had cared for Ao Bing, and surely Ao Bing saw that, too.

Nezha and Ao Bing do not cross paths for a very long time. Everyone notices Nezha is in a dour mood nowadays, and he's taking on lots of heavenly duties so he has no free time to dwell on his thoughts. Meanwhile, Ao Bing has been slowly easing back into his old routine as the Third Prince of the East Sea, and he finds it rather boring for reasons he's not ready know why. Then, his family tries to arrange a marriage with him and a princess from another sea, and that's when Ao Bing has to admit to himself—he would rather be with Nezha.

During a huge party at the Heavenly Palace where every god, immortal, and heavenly creature is invited, Nezha is thinking of drowning his sorrows all night before he sees Ao Bing and his incredible outfit. He doesn't know how to act, and he's stuttering as Ao Bing approaches him. Ao Bing is absolutely enjoying the fact that the tables have turned. This awkward interaction is the first baby step to them repairing their relationship.
