Types of Sewing
Hand Sewing
Uses a needle and thread for delicate work (e.g., buttons, hemming, embroidery).
Basic stitches: Running stitch, backstitch, whipstitch, blanket stitch.
Machine Sewing
Faster and more efficient for larger projects (e.g., garments, home decor).
Common machine stitches: Straight stitch, zigzag, overlock (for seams).
Embroidery
Decorative stitching on fabric (hand or machine).
Techniques: Cross-stitch, satin stitch, French knots.
Quilting
Sewing layered fabric with padding in between for blankets or art.
Basic Sewing Supplies
Needles (hand sewing + machine needles)
Thread (all-purpose polyester or cotton)
Fabric (cotton, linen, denim, silk, etc.)
Scissors (fabric shears + small snipping scissors)
Pins & Pincushion (for holding fabric in place)
Measuring Tape & Ruler
Seam Ripper (for fixing mistakes)
Iron & Ironing Board (pressing seams is crucial!)
Sewing Machine (optional but helpful for big projects)
Getting Started with Sewing
1. Learn Basic Stitches (Hand Sewing)
Running Stitch – Simple in-and-out stitch for seams.
Backstitch – Stronger stitch for seams that need durability.
Whipstitch – Used for hemming or joining edges.
2. Practice on Scrap Fabric
Try sewing straight lines, curves, and corners.
Experiment with different stitches.
3. Simple Beginner Projects
Pillowcase
Tote bag
Scrunchies
Simple skirt or apron
4. Move to Machine Sewing (If Interested)
Learn how to thread the machine.
Practice sewing straight and curved lines.
Start with easy patterns (like a drawstring bag).
Common Sewing Terms
Seam – Where two pieces of fabric are stitched together.
Hem – Folded edge of fabric (like on pants or sleeves).
Basting – Temporary long stitches to hold fabric before final sewing.
Right Side/Wrong Side – The "right" side is the visible part of the fabric; the "wrong" side is the back.
Pattern – A guide for cutting and sewing fabric into a design.
Tips for Successful Sewing
✔ Start small – Don’t jump into complex projects right away. ✔ Press your seams – Ironing makes sewing neater and more professional. ✔ Use the right needle & thread – Thicker fabrics need stronger needles. ✔ Take your time – Rushing leads to mistakes. ✔ Don’t fear mistakes – Even experts use seam rippers!
Advanced Sewing Skills
Once comfortable with basics, you can explore:
Garment construction (dresses, shirts, pants)
Tailoring & alterations (adjusting clothes to fit better)
Serging/Overlocking (for professional seam finishes)
Couture techniques (hand-sewn details like boning, pleats)
Sewing Communities & Resources
Books: The Sewing Book by Alison Smith, Love at First Stitch by Tilly Walnes.
YouTube Channels:
Made to Sew (beginners)
WithWendy (fashion sewing)
Angela Clayton (costume sewing)
Online Classes: Skillshare, Craftsy.
Local Classes: Check fabric stores or community centers.
Why Sewing is a Great Skill
Saves money – Repair clothes instead of replacing them.
Custom creations – Make clothes that fit perfectly.
Eco-friendly – Upcycle old fabrics.
Relaxing & rewarding – A great creative outlet!
Final Thought
Sewing is a useful and enjoyable skill that anyone can learn. Whether you want to mend clothes, create fashion, or just enjoy a relaxing hobby, sewing offers endless possibilities.

university reflective journal - week 2 (9-14/02/2025)
the overarching theme of this week was preparation - fixing IT issues and setting up
Monday - spent more time drawing designs then polished up some of my pattern pieces and created a facing for the neckline of the dress.
Tuesday - cutting out day! with some instruction from my teacher about polishing up the edges of my pieces i was able to transfer them all the calico and cut them out. I also used an industrial sewing machine and overlocker for the first time. Outside of different threading the industrial sewing machine was familiar to me because of my experience using domestic machines. i created a relatively even "spiral of doom"(fabric piece with a sewn spiral on it to test the abilities of the sewer) and helped my classmates who were having trouble threading their machines. the overlocker however was a nightmare, it was my first time using an industrial one and i just assumed that it would be fine so i went ahead with the students who had used one before and started overlocking. Unlike domestic machines the overlocker has a blade that cuts any fabric outside of where you are overlocking so you can just lose 1/4'' of a hem if you don't position your fabric right. I experienced the most heartbreaking thing when overlocking my armhole and lost MORE THAN ONE INCH of fabric at the armpit. This mistake means i will need to sew on a panel to my fabric piece. :(
After making this mistake I prompted went home and left the panel to future me.
Wednesday - the day i started this blog. The emails i sent regarding my canvas units were ignored by the school so after my first lecture i sought out student services. within an hour of talking with them i got some emails back saying the situation had been rectified and i would be enrolled in the correct units soon. I also spoke with my lecturer about the situation and she voided the deadline for the assignments i had missed. ✧٩(•́⌄•́๑)و ✧
in the second lecture the idea of blogging and journalling was discussed. Initially i was anxious about using new software or putting my thoughts and feelings online for others to see. Tumblr was brought up as a site that we could use so i decided to create this blog. I feel quite at home using it and made the first two posts to the blog that day.
Thursday - I was unable to attend my classes because of tonsillitis but remained productive at home by adding to the blog and making paper hats. I also evaluated my timetable and my health.
timetable tldr:
Monday - campus open all day
Tuesday - lecture + tutorial in morning
Wednesday - lectures in morning
Thursday - lecture + tutorial in morning
Friday - campus open all day
The only days where my attendance is compulsory are Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday. I had been waking up every day at 6:30 for an hour long bus ride into the city for my uni even on the days i did not have lectures. Spending every day at campus is really good for my productivity in terms of the practical components of the course but very tiring and likely unsustainable. I also am not yet enrolled in an elective unit - which may further complicate things. Moving forward I will strive for 4 days at uni, the 4th non compulsory day being either Monday or Friday depending on what i need to get done. i will also aim to spend more time at campus after my lectures and socialize with my classmates more
Friday - IT setup + blog post day. I received an email that morning about my unit enrollment and got onto it swiftly. As of right now, I am enrolled in my units on the myUC site, have access to my timetable but still don't have the units showing up on canvas; so idk whats happening there. I will keep checking the site throughout the day. I also wrote up this blog post (´꒳`)و ̑̑ so the updating this starts getting baked into my routine.

What's the most recent game you've played and what do you think of it
Deep rock Galactic, which is a great game made by Ghost Ship Games, a fairly small studio. It's developed a cult following on steam and hit mid tier success. It's a four player co-op game where everyoen has a different role for the team, with unique weapons and exploration tools to help out that only they can bring. It heavily incentivizes communication and team work which has resulted in one of the most wholesome and friendly communities out there when it comes to online gaming. Of course there's still plenty of people who are toxic/bigoted, I just find it's more rare and the community tends to reject them rather than tacitly accept their existence. There's a ton of ways to advance/upgrade your character and gear, too, which is always satisfying. Standard upgrade trees, unlockable perks from running missions, tons of cosmetics. The cosmetics are great, too. Nearly all of them can be unlocked through standard gameplay, and even though there's a battle pass all battle pass items are added to the game to be obtained in other ways once the season ends. Besides just the standard upgrades and new weapon unlocks which add a lot of depth, there's also Overlocks which can dramatically alter how a gun works to add even more variety and depth to every character and weapon. It's a really solid game for up to four player co-op and supports some cool features for solo play. It's also not very demanding graphically so it can run on a wide variety of hardware, which is always cool. If it sounds interesting I'd definitely wait for a decent sale. it goes on sale quite often. Also - don't get any DLC until you've tried it out. The DLC is only cosmetic unlocks for the four classes.

Can you get into costume without a costume qualification?
Okay so heres the thing, I can only speak for the uk. Theoretically yes you can but its really not easy and you need so much experience to get around not having a qualification (which is hard to get if you have no qualifications to back it up). Now please don't take this the wrong way, but costume is a lot harder of an industry than most people seem to think. On the making side you're expected to be able to look at an image and know exactly how to construct the pattern to make it a reality. For example:

This is one of the designs I did for a show a few years ago. The wardrobe team was expected to take this and make it happen without buying any commercial patterns, including how to distress pieces as required. And even if you think that sounds simple (after all cosplayers do that all the time right?) They also have to understand any allergies the actor may have, they have to know how to make the costume able to withstands two shows a day 6 days a week with a wash between every show. They have to know what materials were accurate to the period, where to source them, how to treat them. They need to know all equity guidelines regarding what an actor can be expected to do and what is needed to make it happen. For example if you can't tell me if the barefoot element of this design would be allowed in a mid-range commercial theatre then you dont have enough experience to leap into the costume field. Thats not even mentioning that most theatres want you to already be trained in using industrial machineary including a pressure iron, industrial flatbed and industrial overlocker. They dont want to cover the insurance of teaching you themselves when an accident could cause them to be liable. As for designers, you need to have a vast knowledge of clothing history ranging from ancient civilisations to modern day. You need to know social and economic history, what wars happened when, who was trading with who and what countries different gemstones, fabrics, dyes and metals come from. Knowledge of class systems, political movements, and also colour theory, fashion theory, and literary analysis are just Parts of a designers job. Designers also need to know the legal requirements on what an actor can be allowed to wear, copyright law surronding adaptations, what to do if a book states a character has brown eyes but the actor hired has green and is allergic to contact lens solution. Theres a lot more to it than just putting clothes together at all levels. Please dont take this as an attack anon, but I do face my work being undervalued online a lot because people simply dont understand the depth of the field. TLDR: - Yes you can, but a qualification makes it a lot easier and you dont even know how much you need to learn until someone starts to teach you

Thanksgiving was a wonderful day for our family. I hope it was the same for yours. There is much to be grateful for, not the least of which is our on-line quilting community. Now there will be the transition into the Christmas holiday season. I am hoping I can convince Ray to put up our outdoor lights this weekend. I think, of all the holiday decorations, the outdoor lights are my favorite. I like to get them up as early as possible so we can enjoy them for as long as possible.
I have a new toy to share with you! The back story is that my father-in-law shares my love of thrift stores. We both enjoy the hunt as one never really knows what might be found on any given day. In October, my father-in-law called me and said he was at a thrift store and was looking at a sewing machine. He said he didn’t really know what it did but it looked interesting and was in great shape. I asked a few questions and figured out it was a vintage Baby Lock EA-605 serger. I think the model was made in the late 1970’s. It is a heavy little guy, being made of metal rather than plastic. When he said the machine was priced at $25, I asked him to grab it for me. He brought it over a few weeks ago when we were celebrating my birthday. (This was a mighty fine quilty birthday!)

Actually, the serger won’t be used for quilting. In case you aren’t familiar, sergers are used to create a finished seam. There is a blade and four lines of thread. There are threads entering from above and below, though there is no bobbin. As the seam is created, the blade trims the excess fabric close to the finished edge. It is oh-so-cool! Having never used one, I signed up for a basic serger class at a little fabric shop in town. That helped me figure out some of the basics but there is still much to be learned. This particular machine is designed for woven fabrics, not knit fabrics. However my serger class instructor thinks I might be able to get a decent result with knits, so I will have to give it a try.
Because the machine needed a few adjustments I took it to our local sewing repair genius. Deby was able to clean and adjust everything and it runs so smoothly now.
I wanted to practice on something simple so I made some Christmas themed drawstring bags. I have made a few each year for the past two years and have quite a collection now. I love not having as much paper to throw out come Christmas morning. I had a stack of vintage Christmas fabrics to use as well as loads of ribbon for the drawstrings.
I think the tiny ones are just adorable.
I turned this one inside out to show you the finished seam from the serger. I didn’t use the serger for the casing that the ribbons threads through. I switched over to the regular machine for that. Check out the clean finish on that seam. So great! I will practice a bit more and then try something simple like pajama pants.
If by chance you also have a serger, I would love to hear about any resources, blogs or uTube videos you might have found helpful for learning to use a serger. Leave details in the comments.
Finally – Craftsy has gone all out for Black Friday this year. Beginning on Thursday, 11/24/16 classes are $17.99 each. Fabric and notions are all on sale as well. I am quite curious about the Boundless line of solids. I took a look and the prices are amazing. Solids, in a rainbow of thirty different colors, are available in pre-cuts such as layer cakes and jelly rolls, as well as yardage.
This is an affiliate link, meaning if you make a purchase after clicking over from my blog, I will receive a stipend.

I am linking up with a few favorites this week, including the Elm Street Quilts ‘Bag It’ event. Find out all about them at the top of the page, under Link Ups.

Acer Predator Orion, Nitro, Triton, and Helios (2021): the RTX Series 30 conquer the new batch of Acer gaming computers
Acer Predator: Orion / Nitro / Triton / Helios, an important day for Acer today. After all, a Next @ Acer have present a large number of devices on its ranges. Also, the one that concerns us in this text is Predator. Which encompasses its gaming desktops and laptops and which has been renewed with nothing more and nothing less than four computers: two towers and two laptops.
After all, the new devices are equipped with the latest from Intel, AMD and NVIDIA. After all, Intel and AMD put the Intel 11th Generation and Ryzen 5000 , respectively. Also, NVIDIA has been responsible for equipping the teams with the new RTX Series 30 . Of course, what do the new Acer devices offer us for gamers? Well, let's go by parts.

Acer Predator Orion/Nitro

This is the new Acer gaming towers
Of course, we start with the towers or desktops. In fact, the first of these is the Acer Predaton Orion 3000 , which consists of a half tower platform. As it could not be otherwise, the computer is filled with RGB lighting thanks to the two 92-millimeter Predator FrostBlade fans custom designed and the RGB bars on the front. Also, an aggressive design typical of a device in this segment.
After all, the Acer Predator Orion 3000 is only available with Intel processors. Of course, it can be the latest generation i5 or i7. The graphics card can be an RTX 2060, 3060 Ti, or 3070 (which will allow us to access ray tracing and technologies such as DLSS ). After all, it can achieve a GTX 1660 SUPER.

For RAM memory, up to 16 GB DDR4 at 3200 MHz expandable up to 64 GB (this is shared by the three models) and for storage, up to 3 TB hard disk at 7200 RPM and also, 1 TB of SSD ME that we can expand from the available slots.
Of course, pre-installed operating system will be Windows 10 Home 64-bit. Also, for connectivity, Acer have not want to fall short and has implement Gigabit-class Ethernet, WiFi 6 MU-MIMO and Bluetooth 5.0. In fact, the tower price is at 949 euros for the simplest version.

Then we have the Nitro 50, which are exactly the same with the difference that one of them mounts Intel 11th Generation processors (i5 or i7) and the other AMD B550A chipset can mount up to a Ryzen 9 5900. Otherwise, exactly the same.
Thus, the Acer Nitro can be equipped with RTX 2060 or 3060Ti GPUs or, failing that, with GeForce GTX 1650 or 1660 SUPER. As well as, there is a company fiting by up to 16 GB of DDR4 3200 MHz RAM. Also, expandable up to 64 GB. Also, the same storage configuration in Acer Predator Orion 3000. Of course, its price starts at 799 euros.

MiniLED screens come to gaming laptops
Although the towers don't look bad, the truth is that Acer's new gaming laptops have garnered much of the interest. As well as, the most powerful model in the range is the Acer Predator Helios 500. After all, a laptop weighing almost four kilos, 35.3 millimeters thick and can be achieved with a 17.3-inch MiniLED 4K 120 Hz screen or an AUO FullHD panel. at 360 Hz. By hertz it is not going to be, of course.
As well as, it is Regarding the engine, Acer gives the option of getting Intel's flagship. Also, the Core 11th Gen i9-11980HK (overlock ready) or the i7-11800H. In fact, complete with up to 32 GB of DDR4 memory and different storage configurations. After all, it is a dual (hard drive and NVMe SSD).

All of this will make the temperature rise, but Acer has implemented a metal alloy polymer-based cooling system located on top of the processor (Acer PowerGem, it's called) and three fans including a fifth-generation AeroBlade.
All of this will make the temperature rise, but Acer has implemented a metal alloy polymer-based cooling system located on top of the processor (Acer PowerGem, it's called) and three fans including a fifth-generation AeroBlade.
Striking is also the keyboard. In addition to having RGB lighting, the WASD keys have MagTek mechanical switches that are pressure-sensitive, so for practical purposes, they will work like the joysticks of a console controller. they will also offer more precision in driving games.

ACER LAPTOP
In fact, it is Reviewing connectivity, Acer has mounted its WiFi 6 and Ethernet systems and, curiously, 5G as an option . It remains to be seen how it works on a day-to-day basis (especially now that 5G is beginning to be deployed), but Acer's idea is that the player can play online anywhere without latency. Of course, it is a matter of waiting just to find out.
In fact, what Acer has not revealed about this device is neither its battery. After all, what we know is four cells nothing else. Nor the number of ports. Also, what we can anticipate is that its price will start at 2,499 euros .
As well as, the other model that Acer proposes to us is the Acer Predator Triton 500 SE . This is a more affordable model, but just as powerful. After all, it weighs 2.4 kilos, is 19.9 inches thick and mounts a 16-inch IPS screen with WQXGA resolution (2,560 x 1,600 pixels) in 16:10 format, with 165 Hz refresh rate , three milliseconds of response and a brightness of 500 nits with peaks of 1,250 nits.
Acer Predator
This device will be available with the Intel Core 11th Gen i9-11900H or i7-11800H , up to 32 GB of DDR4 RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, 3070 or 3080 GPU. After all, its internal storage, SSD is up to 1 TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe.
As well as, the previous model of Acer Predator Triton 500 SE mount is a Vortex Flow cooling system consisting of three fans (just like a fifth-generation AeroBlade). five dedicated heat pipes for the CPU and GPU, and air intake and exhaust fans.
Of course, it should be noted that this laptop have Ethernet, WiFi 6, two Thunderbolt 4 ports and every single connections necessary for day to day. The operating system is Windows 10 Home, its autonomy claims to be 12 hours and its price starts at 1,999 euros.
Versions and price of the new Acer gaming equipment
The new Acer equipment will soon be available for purchase in different configurations. The price, therefore, will depend on them. In fact, Acer Predator Triton 500 SE maybe it will available from July, the Predator Helios 500 from June and the two towers from October. The starting prices are as follows:
Acer Predaton Orion 3000 : from 949 euros.
Acer Predator Nitro 50 : from 799 euros.
Acer Predator Triton 500 SE : from 1,999 euros.
Acer Predator Helios 500 : from 2,499 euros.

Thread Serger

Do you truly require that new serger machine for your sewing ventures? That all relies upon what sort of textures you are sewing with and how proficient you need the creases to look when done. A serger won't supplant your sewing machine as they are not equipped for introducing zippers, making buttonholes, sewing backward, weaving, or in any event, doing topstitch.
Sewing.org portrayed a sergers fundamental capacities as "to clean completion a crude edge". About.com says the serger "manages the crease and encases the crease remittance or edge of the texture .... across the board step". We took a gander at the top performing sergers including the Brother 1034D, Brother 2340CV, Juki MO-735, Janome Serger 3434D, and the most recent Baby Lock. Evaluating ranges from $200 up to $1000's. The most well known sergers are the 2/3/4 string albeit a 5 string serger is required on the off chance that you need to do coverstitching.
Numerous individuals own a sewing machine and buy a serger to help when working with stretchy textures (swimwear, sports apparel, and so forth.). See our purchasing guidance beneath and which models stand apart among the rest. There are loads of highlights to consider when searching for another serger. Preferably you can take a class at your nearby sewing shop and get an opportunity to trial a portion of the serger machines available. Hands on experience is the key, that way you can realize what each machine offers and on the off chance that you like their exhibition. In the event that you can't test a machine before you purchase, ensure the item accompanies an instructional DVD or video and great manual.
An ever increasing number of recordings are showing up on YouTube, so that is an extraordinary elective source to what others utilizing your machine and gaining from that. On the off chance that you are an apprentice or master client, one of the basic grumblings is the capacity to string the machine easily.
