Fun Fact
BuzzFeed published a report claiming that Tumblr was utilized as a distribution channel for Russian agents to influence American voting habits during the 2016 presidential election in Feb 2018.
whenever sakuya connects with another person, he moves his hair out of his face. almost like he's trying to put in the effort to not hide from the world, to not plug his ears or cover his eyes like he usually doesfdssdfkjfdsjkgjk
Lemme preface this first by saying P3 Reload is my first foray into Persona 3 and I'm about 15 hours in, so any context for how the original game handled SEES and its S.Links are beyond me.
So while, admittedly, the P3-make must be doing something right since I've thus far clocked 15 hours on it (first time playing P3 btw) I'm having a major issue of really not connecting with the SEES team.
Which is funny because the writing in this game IS pretty good...ya know when it's the S.Links. Bebe (my beloved), Mutatsu, Bunkichi and Mitsuko, MAYA, I genuinely enjoy their S.Links, and while (so far at least I haven't got any of them above level 5) they don't have the thematic relevance for befriending you like the confidants of Persona 5 did I still feel a genuine sense of camaraderie between the P3 protag and them.
I can't say the same for the SEES team. For a team I live in the same dorm as and fight shadows every night with I know nothing about them. The one who's opened up the most to you by this point in the game, Junpei, is a loveable idiot but what do I even know about him? Heeeeee...is in my class? Uh...he plays videogames?
I don't know, I genuinely do hope that my connection to SEES grows, this game is damn good so far and I'm still enjoying it more than I did Persona 4.
anyway i feel like p3's social links are a bit all of the place - later games definitely polish them better - but since i've been playing the remake i've been trying to figure out why.
tonally, they are all over the place, and i think later games do a much better job with tying the Tarot Theme to the storyline. all social links always require you telling the person what they want to hear, but p3 is silly about it. tell the jock to ignore his health and injuries! encourage the friend to break the law! -- between that and the tonal whiplash, it's just. weird.
but i think i figured out the theme, and i don't know why i even had to think about it, because it's the same theme of the entire game: Accepting Ends.
accepting change. accepting death. it comes up in every social link in one way or another. a character is living or acting in a certain way, and either they have to face a huge change, or they're living in reaction to it without accepting it.
Kazushi and Mamoru both want to excel in sports, and are in denial over the fact that for both of them, those dreams are ending. Kazushi's injury can't keep going untreated; Mamoru's family needs him to work.
Maiko is in the midst of her parents divorce, and doing everything she can to prevent and ignore it.
Bebe has to leave Japan, but thinks that if he works really hard, he can stay.
Keisuke is torn between the path he's expected to take and the path he really wants, although interestingly, the two swap places completely during his story.
Other times, the change has already happened: Bunkichi and Mitsuko have already lost their son, but are still struggling with it and clinging to his memorial.
Mutatsu lost his family, and is pretending he doesn't want them back.
Nozomi is drowning himself in food and denial instead of coping with his brother's (food related) death.
It's a bit more subtle here and there. Yoko's "accepting of change" is actually a positive (as fits the Strength arcana): she's discovering her calling, even if she's slow to embrace it. Kenji and Maya both think everything is going great, only to discover the truth at the last second and that the story isn't what they believed.
Akinari is actively dying and knows it, but is struggling with accepting it. He's more or less the thesis statement of the game in social link form: you WILL die, things WILL end, sometimes none of your dreams work out and you have to ADAPT. Make the best of it. Memento Mori!
Been seeing stuff with characters of the same arcana interacting and thought this would be neat.
Tournament where the best "arcana" wins, this being judged by how much people like the characters associated with that arcana.
Wanted to put out a survey first to get some feedback on what characters should be included (ex. spin-offs or no) and how long the tournament should be. I'll close the survey May 23 10PM EST
Current roster under cut, feel free to check if anything is wrong or missing
Prioritizing the Arcanas in the OG P3 over P3P because of themes, also I have a friend that will kill me if I do otherwise
I know the Arena games also have characters associated with some of the arcanas, but want to hear feedback on including spin-offs first as well as hear from people more knowledgeable about them
Pairing: P3 Protagonist x GN Reader
Warnings: Hospital Mention, Amnesia
Word Count: 460
Summary: Oftentimes when you were with Makoto, silence would fill the air rather than conversation. It never bothered you, but standing silently next to him in the bookstore did something that scratched at your brain and tensed your muscles.
(In other words, Makoto starts your Social Link)

"Do you come here a lot?"
You hadn't noticed Makoto snuck up behind you until he spoke up, his sudden appearance spooking you just a bit.
Offering a nod, you glanced at him as he moved to stand next to you. "Yeah."
He didn't offer a response, which wasn't unusual. Any conversation- if you could even call them that -you had with Makoto were typically short lived, you would exchange a few words every once in a while but most moments were spent in silence when it was just the two of you. He wasn't much of a talker, and neither were you apparently.
While the silence that followed him around seemed to bother Yukari and Junpei, you never minded it. But today, something about it felt off putting. You couldn't exactly tell what the problem was, and that only proved to bother you more.
"Around this time last year, I woke up in the hospital with amnesia." You started talking without thinking, absent mindedly running your finger tips over a books spine. "I'm not sure why, but after my first day back at school I came here."
Makoto raised an eyebrow, looking at you curiously. "Muscle memory?" He suggested.
You offered a shrug. "Probably. Bunkichi-san and Mitsuko-san recognized me, but your guess is as good as mine. This was the only place I didn't feel lost in, so I would come here everyday after school."
"It must be hard- Not remembering."
"It was, but I've gotten used to it." You sighed out a tense laugh. "Sorry, I'm not really sure what got into me. I didn't mean to go babbling about my past."
Or lack thereof. You'd thought, but didn't say out loud.
"It's okay." Shifting his gaze to one of the stores book shelves, he slipped his hands into his pockets. "I don't mind."
"You might want to pick your words more carefully Yuki-kun, or else I might bother you talking about all the things I don't remember." You joked, gently nudging him in the arm.
He shook his head softly, a fleeting smile tugging up the corner of his lips. "Oh no."
You pulled a book off the shelf, hugging it to your chest. It was a fairytale that was probably meant for kids, but the golden trim of the spine was alluring and you couldn't resist. "I'm gonna go ahead and go back to the dorm, I'll see you later?"
"Yeah, later." He returned the wave you gave him with a small nod, before turning his attention back to the many books filling the store.
You got the book for rental as you usually did- never being able to find it in yourself to commit to an actual purchase -before making way back to the dorms.
this was just a thing i wanted to do for myself and thought maybe other people would want to do it. the main goal of the challenge is to pick 1 character for each arcana listing that is your favorite and make an edit for them (or you could do a drawing or writing if you wanted, this is pretty loose).
the characters are from p1-p5 that have canon assigned arcanas, and for the cases in p3(p) where the slink does not match the arcana, the persona will be used for the main arcana, along with a few other minor changes to make the list more coherent.
under a read more since it’s a lengthy list! have fun y’all.
All relevant info under the cut! (There be spoilers)
UPDATED ARCANA
All confidants/social links from P3, P4, and P5. Also included the arcana for P1 and the P2 duology because I can never remember who’s what. Arcana did not exist in this framework for Shin Megami Tensei If...
FOOL
P3: - (technically this is SEES, but I did not include groups) (also the protagonists for P3-5, Elizabeth, and Aigis)
P4: Tohru Adachi. (Adachi technically holds two arcana, though he starts as one and becomes the other: the Hunger Arcana, which does not exist in a standard tarot deck, but comes from the Thoth deck. I did not include it because he switches from one arcana to the other)
P1: Reiji Kido* (Reiji is the only canonical non-protagonist to hold more than one arcana at the same time. He is both Death and the Devil in P1, and makes a minor appearance in P2, where he is still Death and the Devil. However I didn’t have enough space to squish him into the Death slot for P2)
P3: President Tanaka
P4: Sayako Uehara
P5: Ichiko Ohya
TOWER
P1: Takahisa Kandori
P2: Anna Yoshizaka
P3: Mutatsu
P4: Shu Nakajima
P5: Shinya Oda
STAR
P2: Ulala Serizawa
P3: Mamoru Hayase (male protag)/Akihiko Sanada (female protag)
TRIVIA: The protagonist is named Minato Arisato in the manga, Makoto Yuki in the anime, and Sakuya Shiomi in the stage play. Aigis’s name is spelled Aegis in Japan.
TRIVIA: The protagonist is only referred to as “the pierced boy” (Japanese)/”boy with earring” (English) within the games themselves; in the manga he is Naoya Todo, in the drama CD he is Yuya Narumi, and in the novel he is Jihei Suzakurin. Along with Maki, the protagonist makes a minor appearance in Persona 2, while Eriko, Kei, and Yukino return in P2 as playable characters once again.
TRIVIA: SMT If… was released only in Japan and is considered the originator of the Persona series. The series features a protagonist whose gender is decided by the player, something not seen again until P3P, though the female protagonist is canon in the games and the male protagonist is canon in the manga. Tamaki makes a cameo appearance in P1 and P2. The male protagonist is called Nobu Akiyama in both the manga and its sequel and Jin Aoki in the novel.
