If you had the choice, what would you want to see from your window? @fixated.on.fiction.2 combined the #booktoscreenchallenge and the #bookwindow challenge, and I had so many books that were adapted into shows and films that I couldn't resist trying it out, myself! And, of course, the Red Queen and new Percy Jackson adaptations are underway, and I'm so excited!! I am officially OBSESSED with the ACOTAR series! Rhys and the gang have stolen my heart for the foreseeable future... Sorry Loki! 😬 I need all of the merch immediately! This series just makes me so happy. I love the Inner Circle so so much, and makes me wish that I had a close friend group more like them! QOTD: Do you try and find connections between props and the book they're with for photos? Do you have a friend group like the Inner Circle? I think I end up thinking too much about connections, honestly! But I had a lot of fun with this set-up. I tried to pull influences from all of the courts and events in the book. ✨QOTD: Who are your mentors? ✨ I'm lucky enough to have had a mentor who actually published some books on her methods, and especially now that she passed away a couple years ago, I'm so grateful to be able to come back to her own words and feel like I can still get advice from her. Dr. McLaughlin was my first harp teacher, and she was also my harp professor until she had to retire due to her cancer. Simply put, she was an INCREDIBLE person. If you like the original Star Wars trilogy, she's the harpist for those film scores! She's also the only person who had permission to play Harpo Marx's (of the Marx Brothers) harp music. Among other things, her life was incredible and she taught me so much! Power Performance is allllll about Neuro-Linguistic Programming, and if you've never used it or heard of it, I highly recommend reading it! It's super useful in everyday life, and also for important performances, speeches, teaching, etc. It's basically the science behind how we learn, and how to take advantage of different routes of learning and how to better use people's styles of communication to have the same understanding in conversations. QOTD: Have you had a book catastrophe happen? If so, what happened?? My copy of A Personal Matter suffered from the worst accidental ketchup explosion this past spring! 🙈 It was in my (real leather and canvas) backpack purse along with a book I borrowed from a friend. I had no idea that I had several Whataburger ketchup containers in my bag, and when I opened it up to get something before running across campus for a class, I discovered a terrible ketchup mess! 😱😭 LUCKILY (not sponsored, I swear😂) @whataburger has the best ketchup which also turns out to not be super runny, and I managed to get nearly all of the ketchup out of everything -- even the book pages -- really easily later that night when I managed to find time to clean it all up. ✨ What book has really made you think long and hard about the subject it's tackling? ✨ Silence by Shusaku Endo was the first contemporary Japanese lit novel I read in full. It was for my contemporary Japanese literature class, and it exceeded all of my expectations. Honestly, it's hard to condense all of my thoughts about this book into this little caption, but what it boils down to is: PLEASE READ IT! 🥰 Silence focuses on the persecution of Christians in Japan in the 1600's, and a missionary's journey, in which he sneaks through closed borders in order to spread the word of God and find his mentor (rumor has it his mentor apostatized at The Pit in Nagasaki). Even though Endo claimed that he didn't write religious theology in his novels, this story has a lot of people arguing otherwise! It's littered with biblical allegories, and really tackles the idea of personal faith -vs- mainstream faith enforced by the Church (or any religion, really, if you look at it broadly!). It also brings to light how our opinion of what is "pure" or "right" might be flawed, or simply sheltered from reality. I was initially interested in this book because I hoped my mom and I could really discuss this at a deeper level (she has a degree in biblical studies!); however, this has made so much more of an impact on me than I could have expected. It's really stuck with me, and helps me view people's views and standpoints on anything in a new light, and I think that's one of the most important takeaways! . . . Happy Monday! 🧚🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️ I have never been able to get enough of fairies, and The Queen's Choice by Cayla Kluver was one that stuck with me for a long time, even though I don't think I've managed to finish the series yet 😂 It centers around the magically separated faerie and human realms. Faeries are able to cross the Bloody Road, but humans perish if they try. The book centers around Anya's journey to the human world in her mission to find Prince Zabriel, who ran away years ago, so that she won't have to take the throne as the queen requests. While in some ways the plot is slow-moving, I really love the world building and deeper look we get at characters before things take off! QOTD: What are your favourite books with fairies? Do you have a crazy, bookish story? I have a story to share for Day 3 of the #30bachallenge that @berrybookpages is hosting! I don't have any particularly crazy stories, but as someone who is a stickler for following the rules, this one makes the list! I'm lucky enough to be able to experience the Tucson Festival of Books every year, and I usually volunteer, too! One year in particular, my friend, @rikkiriojas and I were volunteering as festival guides (aka line managers). Lo and behold, one of the lines we were managing was for @ahoffmanwriter ! I'll admit, I've never been able to read as many of her books as I would like to, but I saw her sitting and waiting for the panel room to open, and my friend convinced me to go and talk to her. She is genuinely the sweetest person, and was so amazing to talk to! I was a bit nervous, as I was supposed to be taking care of the line of audience members, but she sat me down with her and asked me all about myself, and what I thought about the festival. As our short talk wrapped up, she asked if I had anything for her to sign. I didn't 😅 (rookie mistake). I did, however, have event vouchers that we handed out to keep track of audience numbers (and not for signing, or keeping, or anything like that! Big no-no in my book lol). She laughed and said it was perfect, and signed it for me. I was a bit mortified that all I had was that voucher, but it was still such a cool experience! I was in high school back then, and I've still kept it safe to this day! Happy fall! 🍂 Everyone's been getting in a spooky mood, but I usually can't manage to do that until part of the way through October! 😅 So here's my early spooky contribution! I never knew what to expect from Dracula before I read it for my Slavic folklore and culture class. But man, can I just say I never expected Dracula to go to the lengths he did?? The whole story is wild and goes between London an Transylvania, and I still haven't quite unraveled all of the connections between plot points and characters yet. Happy Monday! For me this semester, Mondays are like my Fridays, and it's the weirdest feeling! I do hours of homework and stuff all the way from Friday morning until Sunday night, and then I have a breath of fresh air on Monday mornings before I throw myself back in. 😅 n.p. by Banana Yoshimoto was quite the experience. If you could have a magical object, what would it be? There are tons of magical artifacts in my favorite books, and one of my favorites from the United States of Asgard/God's of New Asgard series is Loki's Mask of Changing! The Apple Throne is a book that I put off reading for so long, because I didn't want the series to be over!
