✨ What book has really made you think long and hard about the subject it's tackling? ✨ Silence by Shusaku Endo was the first contemporary Japanese lit novel I read in full. It was for my contemporary Japanese literature class, and it exceeded all of my expectations. Honestly, it's hard to condense all of my thoughts about this book into this little caption, but what it boils down to is: PLEASE READ IT! 🥰 Silence focuses on the persecution of Christians in Japan in the 1600's, and a missionary's journey, in which he sneaks through closed borders in order to spread the word of God and find his mentor (rumor has it his mentor apostatized at The Pit in Nagasaki). Even though Endo claimed that he didn't write religious theology in his novels, this story has a lot of people arguing otherwise! It's littered with biblical allegories, and really tackles the idea of personal faith -vs- mainstream faith enforced by the Church (or any religion, really, if you look at it broadly!). It also brings to light how our opinion of what is "pure" or "right" might be flawed, or simply sheltered from reality. I was initially interested in this book because I hoped my mom and I could really discuss this at a deeper level (she has a degree in biblical studies!); however, this has made so much more of an impact on me than I could have expected. It's really stuck with me, and helps me view people's views and standpoints on anything in a new light, and I think that's one of the most important takeaways! . . . As a character driven reader, this was tough for me. I made it a little easier by picking five of my favorite female characters. Mia Corvere (Nevernight) - teenage assassin, shadow powers, out for bloody vengeance Karou (Daughter of Smoke and Bone) - girl with magic, works with demons, falls in love with angels, tries to end millenia old war Inej Ghafa (Six of Crows) - known as the Wraith, works in the crew of the most dangerous man in town, acrobatic skills, practically invisible when she chooses to be Emma Carstairs (Lady Midnight) - Shadowhunter, kills demons with her powerful family sword, helping her parabatai raise his younger siblings Nahri (City of Brass) - magical healer, con artist, will do whatever she has to to get her way. All five of these females are also sarcastic and snarky, which is apparently my cup of tea. Have you got any funny bookish stories to tell? I’m joining in with the #30bachallenge and that’s today’s prompt! I don’t think I have anything funny to say but here’s a few bookish things about me. I changed my feed to focus on books back in January and since then I’ve created a weird system of spreadsheets and batch taking bookish photos alongside photo challenge prompts. It means I have a whole bank of content to use through the month and a group of hashtags to join in with. Both my kids have bookish names. I was pretty amazed to find two (or at least a variation of) my daughters name in Throne of Glass (Evangeline) & A Court of Thorns and Roses (Amaranth - without the A) and also my planned name If we have another daughter is in Crescent City but I’ll keep you guessing as to what - but it was actually picked from an older book! 💜 I have started reading City of Bones and rewatching the shadowhunters series on Netflix. I’m much further in the series than the book! Do you have a crazy, bookish story? I have a story to share for Day 3 of the #30bachallenge that @berrybookpages is hosting! I don't have any particularly crazy stories, but as someone who is a stickler for following the rules, this one makes the list! I'm lucky enough to be able to experience the Tucson Festival of Books every year, and I usually volunteer, too! One year in particular, my friend, @rikkiriojas and I were volunteering as festival guides (aka line managers). Lo and behold, one of the lines we were managing was for @ahoffmanwriter ! I'll admit, I've never been able to read as many of her books as I would like to, but I saw her sitting and waiting for the panel room to open, and my friend convinced me to go and talk to her. She is genuinely the sweetest person, and was so amazing to talk to! I was a bit nervous, as I was supposed to be taking care of the line of audience members, but she sat me down with her and asked me all about myself, and what I thought about the festival. As our short talk wrapped up, she asked if I had anything for her to sign. I didn't 😅 (rookie mistake). I did, however, have event vouchers that we handed out to keep track of audience numbers (and not for signing, or keeping, or anything like that! Big no-no in my book lol). She laughed and said it was perfect, and signed it for me. I was a bit mortified that all I had was that voucher, but it was still such a cool experience! I was in high school back then, and I've still kept it safe to this day! @berrybookpages mentioned in her description for today's #30bachallenge task that one of her favourite things about bookstagram is that she discovers series by hearing about characters from people! I don't think it could be put any other way! I wanted to share some of my top characters that I love that aren't from my favourite book (#myladyjane )! 1. Rysand from #acotar by Sarah J. Maas Surprise, surprise that #rysand managed to pull me in. 😂 People talk about their "book boyfriends" but while I enjoyed many male book characters, I saw red flags on too many of them to really latch onto that concept. But between Rys and Gilbert Blythe, I can't argue against book boyfriends anymore! We need more Rysands in the world! 2. Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery I see SO MUCH of myself in Anne! I can't even begin to describe how much I admire Anne, and see so many parallels in myself. 3. Annabeth Chase from Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan WAYYY back in fourth grade, a friend from my neighborhood told me I needed to read Percy Jackson, and that they thought I would really enjoy Annabeth. Well, lo and behold, I really came to enjoy Annabeth! 4. Loki from both the Starling Trilogy by Leslie Livingston and the United States of Asgard by Tessa Gratton These ladies have done such amazing jobs working with my favourite trickster god! There have always been so many layers to Loki, even in the original mythology. I just can't get enough of it! I feel like these iterations of Loki try to pull these layers apart a bit more, and it just makes me so happy. 5. Zen Wistaria from Snow White with the Red Hair by Sorata Akizuki I like Zen for a lot of the reasons why I like Rysand! I just really enjoy the humor and personality that he brings to the story, and the genuine kindness that he has. ✨ Is there a book/series you've put off reading for ages, even though you really want to read it? ✨ That was A Court of Thorns and Roses for me! I never found a good opportunity to read it, and I owned the rest of the series until I managed to snag this copy of ACOTAR from @nonstopbooks a couple of weeks ago. I remember my friend in high school was obsessed with these, as well as other Sarah J. Maas books, and I had this longing to read them whenever I saw them with one of her books during yearbook class. 😂 The downsides of popular books are that library hold lists are massive, and prices stay high! So I snagged what I could when I found them at good prices. Day 21 of the #30bachallenge is to give a book review, which is perfect timing, since I spent a couple late nights devouring this INCREDIBLE book! It's so good!! 😍 I knew there had to be this massive hype for a reason, but I didn't expect to get so hooked so fast! I love the humor of the book -- it roped me in right away. Feyre is such a strong character, even if she is massively stubborn sometimes (I can relate lol). This book (and the series, from what I can tell so far with A Court of Mist and Fury) isn't afraid to take risks. By that, I mean that Maas isn't afraid to get into territories with characters that we often get warned not to utilize in places like creative writing classes (but incredibly tempting territories, nonetheless!) and come out victorious. ✨Why do you love reading?✨ Day 13 of the #30bachallenge asks just that question! I'm combining it with the #booksbeforebookstagram challenge that @amshelves tagged me in, because there's a lot of overlap! I love reading because there is this undescribable special feeling that it brings. Books have ALWAYS been a part of my life. I honestly can't remember a point in my life that didn't involve books. One of the things I love most about reading is that you find bits of your personality and bits of things you love and cherish in them. You can embrace those things when it might be hard to do that in "reality." ✨ What was the first book you read? I don't remember what the first book I read was, but before I could read myself, I half taught myself for was by memorising the Cat in the Hat. My mom read a lot of Dr. Seuss to me when I was growing up, and I think it explains A LOT about my interests. ✨When did you start reading? My mom likes to say that I was reading by the time I was three! I really don't remember learning or starting to read, but I know that I was doing it before most kids I knew were. ✨Where do you get your recommendations? I don't really get recommendations all that much. I mostly end up browsing the library stacks or my local used bookstores to find new reads! But now I have bookstagram! And that's giving me new recs! ✨What inspired you to start a bookstagram? I've had a big personal library for years, and I gained a reputation for trying to keep my books like new. I always want to give people recommendations, but everyone is scared to borrow from me. 😂 So, I catered the idea of sharing what I have in my library with everyone without the pressure of taking care of my personal books for probably a year or so! I'm bad with coming up with names, so what held me up for so long was probably that! ✨What changed since you started a bookstagram? I've spent wayy more time on Instagram, and I've quickly learned that far more work goes into producing photos for something like this! It's definitely an art, and I'm excited to learn more about it!
