I have caught up to the prepubs once again-
This is definitely one of my favourite scenes so far!
(you might not be able to tell but I did make Ferdinand's ears slightly pink-)
>:D
BWahahaHAHA
I didn't colour it in because I was too impatient.
HEH
Part 5 Volume 9 Spoilers ahead-
My favourite thing about this is that prior to this ahem. Declaration. Rozemyne has tried to convince Hannelore she is not in love with Ferdinand, even if he is 'the ideal political partner,' (yes, she did actually say that-) then had a conversation with the man himself about how to prevent their theoretical marriage from being forced on him,
And then she goes and says this-
*cackles maniacally-

So on January 26th yesterday,  I looked into how the comics had Cass combat her disability in Dyslexia being not able to read and relate words vocally.
What worked, what didn't, and which era handled the progression better.
Tumblr media
At the very core of her very first appearance in Batman #567 by Kelley Puckett and Damion Scott, Barbara Gordon is trying to help Cassandra overcome her disability.  And it is her first words spoken that give her father David Cain pause.
Tumblr media
Batgirl Vol. 1 #2 gives us the first look into how Cass really doesn't fully care about learning in either study instead focusing on her new vigilante life. That is until running into Robinson and learning WHY words and writing truly matter.
Tumblr media
#5 has her run across a metahuman who has mental abilities and because of those rewires her brain to have the capacity to understand.
Tumblr media
It's a cheap copout for sure.  But it gives Cass a voice in her mind along with the capacity to speak better.  Bad news? It screws up her abilities and how her mind was originally wired.
Tumblr media
This leads into #6-9 basically being how Cass can get her ability to read body language and learn with the added bonus of her mind continuing to be the way it is.  Enter Lady Shiva who gives her this, but at a price aka the crux of what will lead into Batgirl #25.
Batgirl Vol. 1 #20 written by Chuck Dixon (art still by Scott). Where Cass comes to a drop man who's murdered before he can deliver a ransom. Her lack of being able to read leads her to seek out--
Tumblr media
-- one Stephanie Brown aka Spoiler.  I think at this point the reason Cass went to Steph was that she was afraid Babs would lecture her on neglecting her reading lessons (which she would later on).
Tumblr media
Tim Drake, she had just fully befriended (#18), but he was close to Babs. So Cass probably figured he accidentally let slip this and she'd be in trouble. Steph wouldn't she was on the outside from the Bat Family (at this time).
The issue does promise of Cass in attaining another reading teacher (which pays off in the most weirdest place, Convergence: Batgirl #1), but this plot point goes nowhere here. Cass/Steph's friendship would intensify for the next ten issues (#21, 26-28).
For the most part, we don't really get to see fully Cass try and fight her Dyslexia again until the Dylan Horrocks' run with #51 where we learn HOW Cass is expanding her word vocabulary via TV but neglecting on reading.
Tumblr media
This bit reads its crux with the infamous #54 (i.e. the one that causes Cass/Babs to fracture away from one another).
Tumblr media
In the issue, Cass has to deal with a killer robot that's taking out any place that has a copy of a book that has the codeword to shut it down. We learn during the fight, Cass has been neglecting her studies in reading.  Again with the infamous page:
Tumblr media
Now Horrocks did this because he was ordered to write Babs off this title (Birds of Prey, the comic Babs was primarily in would be eventually moving away from Gotham). It was the first of that would make the writer leave the comic (and DC Comics altogether).
Regardless again the way the case rattled Cass enough to think about it all and work back into trying to read.
Tumblr media
If there was instant positive of writer Andersen Gabrych when he began his run. He made sure this was a reoccurring plot point THROUGHOUT his run starting with #58.
Tumblr media
By giving Cass her own diary it enables her better way to try and combat her disability. Along with in the very same issue, Cass trying to actively read a book for the first time on page.
Tumblr media
The diary motif would be a hallmark of Gabrych's entire run with the book. So I'm not gonna post every entry. But I think that's why I really loved those first few issues because he covered ALL corners with the character.
 You saw it all.
Never once did Gabrych use behind the issues trick. This was a struggle for Cass. I think it better helped resonate the character with readers by doing so. It also went down an angle that was different than Puckett and felt like the better next step from what was built on prior.
Course Cass would still have her bad habits of being an avid TV watcher. So the balance of her trying and struggling was a nice touch.
Tumblr media
This came to an ironic fully circle with #67 with Babs returning (for one issue) in the comic and the pair hashing out their differences and mending. But it also reveals a further reason why Babs really wants Cass to learn to read. Again, this is probably the best reason.
Tumblr media
She knows Cass wants to be Bruce's heir and be Batman. She knows the only way to fully be that is to get fully conquer her disability. And for the second time in her ongoing we get a look in how Cass's brain was wired from her learning from her father and the metahuman.
And we get the clearest answer how Cass's brain truly operates and why the usual methods in overcoming her disability in reading.
Tumblr media
That's the final gift Gabrych gave us.
A hope.
 A small faint hope that maybe Cass could learn with whatever writer would take on the character next. The only thing is even he couldn't anticipate what was to come...
Batgirl was canceled with #73 and well the next time we saw Cass and how this disability was handled came in Robin #148.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright, before I go into this portion. Newly minted Robin writer (this was his first issue) Adam Beechen came into comics had zero idea of the character of Cassandra Cain, other than what he was told and found.
The DC Editors on Robin did not help him or assist him. They gave him an edict... and he did that edict without question. The result....
Was this INFAMOUS page from Robin #149. Cassandra Cain the character who had the disability of Dyslexia somehow was able to learn another entire language.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's not even going with the OTHER problem Robin OYL gave us with Cass (but that's an entirely ANOTHER issue). Regardless after the story arc, Beechen (and DC) realized just how badly he screwed up.
Course, the entirety on HOW Cass was suddenly able to learn an entire language with how her brain understood information. Yeah, this was a plot thread nobody truly wanted to answer when the retcons began dropping after Cass's "EVIL" phase to fix it.
In fact, it was Beechen himself who addressed the issue in Batgirl Vol. 2 #1 amongst the CHUNKS of well exposition and history that was the mess DC made of the character from 2006-2007.
Tumblr media
So all those issues Babs mentioned in #67? Cass and Alfred fixed them and for the entire MISSING YEAR Cass made great strides to overcome her disability. THAT'S how she was able to understand the Navajo language.
Look I get what Beechen was doing and I also get we were NEVER gonna get the missing stories to showcase that. But to see an entire character's journey in overcoming her disability fixed overnight?
Tumblr media
Even with Beechen giving us a classmate in Sal (who's last name we NEVER learn, and is forgettable male love interest #3 for Cass) who gives us the promise of something we never get from the Vol. 1 ongoing. Because DC was gonna DC.
Tumblr media
That's basically it for the original run for Cass. That it was a nice harrowing journey that had its bumps but the character was making great strides to be better. Then well the road bumps began to occur and yeah...
I'll give it to Beechen that he tried at the very least to fix the holes he himself caused. But... in the format given it's just crushing how this was fully handled in the end.
Sadly we got nothing more as DC really did a meh job for about five years? We did get this little nugget in Convergence: Batgirl #1 though (somehow connecting that line from waaaaaay back in Batgirl Vol. 1 #20)...
Tumblr media
Which is shocking of all places for Cass trying to overcome her disability, Convergence: Batgirl #1 was not the place one ever would think to find that, but we had that surprisingly.
So when Cass was "reintroduced" into the DCU with Batman & Robin Eternal. A reset was in order and writers were allowed back to square one in how to deal with Cass handling her Dyslexia disability.
Tumblr media
I will say this for James Tynion IV and Scott Snyder on how they handle putting a metahuman with mental abilities they just slot that character in #11 by introducing the Sculptor who basically fills the same void the meta in Batgirl Vol. 1 #5 did.
Tumblr media
Much like the original metahuman, once this link is established Sculptor nopes her way out of the story and is never heard from again.
Which kind of surprises me, because it's something I figured Tynion would maybe address during his Detective Comics run (that had Cass in it) given how much in #11 and 12 establish the character and her origins.
But nope. Nothing further.
So yeah, after this we got James Tynion IV's Detective Comics run that had Cass in it starting from #934-981.
Tumblr media
Not surprisingly, Tynion really handled the whole disability issue well than those in the past with the constraints he had. Even more so Juggling multiple characters in this book and going down a better avenue than his predecessors.
And that all begins with #953 with Clayface (Basil Karlo) trying to comfort Cass after learning her mom is Lady Shiva.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By doing this. Tynion lays the seeds on how he'll deal with the issue on Cass combating her disability while also cementing the hallmark of this run, Clayface's rehabilitation and friendship with Cass.
#958 we see Basil teaching Cass Shakespeare by playing audio and having her learn to read and increase her vocabulary via that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's probably the best thing Tynion did character-wise with Cass by briefly showing us this but fully giving us a more plausible method than prior on how to deal with her disability.
The fact that this hits throughout this arc (as Cass quotes Shakespeare at a good moment) and is carried over until the very end of his run when Cass meets Barbara in #981.
Tumblr media
This version of Cass is actively trying to combat her Dyslexia more than her prior versions, and this Cass is actively doing a better job. Even though we don’t get much Babs teaching Cass (though they do work together in the next arc after this that sets up Batman & the Outsiders). But that run doesn’t dig into Cass’s progress instead going into other routes to touch on with the character.
Unlike what was carried over from Batgirl Vol. 1 to 2 (and between that) Cass has a more concrete subplot here. Where we can SEE and are TOLD of her progress.
That leads us into the current Batgirls ongoing. In #1. where this is a little bit lampshaded. As Cass uses a reading bag to combat criminals to retain stuff she/Steph had that was stolen.
Tumblr media
A further bit of subplot is continued throughout and in #4 with Cass now ACTIVELY being a bookworm and reading works of Edgar Allen Poe.
Tumblr media
Like it astonishes me that this element of the character has remained actually consistent from point A to B. But it's a nice contrast of things that creators at DC worked on better here than prior.
And no issue highlights that fight of Cass actively wanting to combat her dyslexia then "Sounds" from DC Festival of Heroes: The Asian Superhero Celebration #1 by Mariko Tamaki and Marcus To.
Tumblr media
It's why Tamaki just fully GETS the character of Cass not in every corner of the character.  Why many want the writer to handle the character again.
But Tamaki isn't the only one who did a good job in showcasing Cass fighting her disability and the one that does the best job is Shadow of the Batgirl graphic novel. Where writer Sarah Kuhn and artist Nicole Goux go both literally fighting her disability.
Tumblr media
And her actively learning to read and increasing her vocabulary by hiding in the library was absolute perfection.
But it also is a nice avenue (and nod to the past) by focusing on a library since that's the location where Barbara Gordon teaches (and again a nice nod to that character's history too).
Tumblr media
Quite literally...
Tumblr media
That's another layer to why I adore that graphic novel. Just the layer of dimension to BOTH characters while it gives that nod to Babs, the story is clearly more Cass.
 Again, Kuhn modernizes everything to perfection.
So there you have the history of Cass and her disability.  And my final gift on this day (which has now passed) to celebrate the character of Cassandra Cain.

Chapter 5: Desperado
Oh, no. They're coming for Vash's friends on the sand steamer.
Wait, that's the girl from the end of the last chapter, huh? That means they can't be far from Milly and Meryl.
Nico-oniisaaaaaaan!!!
"Did your work go well?" Heh. I'll note he does not answer this question. Nicholas D. Wolfwood. The "D" is for "Deflection."
Gods, his hands. This is so much more traumatic in context.
NIGHTOW, WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING HERE, LITERALLY ON THE SAME PAGE AS THAT NIGHTMARE?!?!
Tumblr media
NM, it's just Vash's bad driving. Or maybe he noticed WW wasn't sleeping so good and decided to unsubtly wake him up?
LOL, I have SO MANY THOUGHTS about what's going on in WW's head here, but they're all spoilers, so I'll keep them to myself.
Tumblr media
LOLOLOLOL, WW dragging unconscious Vash into the inn and demanding two rooms is just so funny to me. Like, no wonder these people are staring at him like that. They must have SO MANY QUESTIONS.
I assume there will only be one room. And one bed. Edit: My assumption was wrong.
LOL, nothing wakes Vash up quite like the sound of someone else in need, trying to do the right thing against impossible odds.
He's so cute when he's semi-conscious.
WW, what the hell life have you been living? I'm so sorry, my guy. No wonder Vash is giving you such a headache.
Tumblr media
I wish I could find a suitable picture to show just how much this building looks like the old Spanish missions dotting the landscape in certain parts of the Southwestern U.S., but it seems like 99.9999% of the pictures are of the buildings inside the walls... or of the ones that have been extensively renovated rather than having crumbly bits like so many of them do. (Also, it's late and so I can't be arsed to do a detailed search. Maybe this will help get my point across? IDK, I'm not writing an essay on Spanish missions right now. I already did that back in 4th grade.)
Tumblr media
If I had a son who was recklessly hellbent on getting himself killed alongside me as I defended the town/inn/whatever, I'd tie him up and lock him away, too.
LOL, dehydrated Vash. Gods, babygirl is in baaaaad shape. He's trying, though.
I dunno, a half-dead Vash is still probably pretty competent.
Is now a good time to point out that the word "Desperado" means "The Desperate"? (Also, apparently it's not actually Spanish. We're learning things today in Trigun Book Club.)
"What was that, Vashie?" *Vash barks insistently* "You think you can come up with a plan?" *Vash barks enthusiastically* "Ok, I trust you, boy!" *Vash wags his tail.*
Some quick Spanish notes on page 134 here for those who may not hear these terms so frequently: Mi Amigo = my friend (may not actually indicate a friend; can also be used to create a mock-friendly tone in a situation where intimidation is coming into play) Jefe (pronounced "heh-fay") = slang term meaning "boss" or "leader" (can also be used sort of like "man" or "dude" in English, or in a mock-friendly tone to kinda rub in that the person being called "jefe" is not in charge of the situation) Comprende? = Do you understand?
This guy has too many teeth. And a weird way of standing. Is... is he wearing metal underwear?? What kind of weirdness do you have to go through to get this kind of anatomy? How does he close his lips??? M... maybe it's a mask of some sort??
Tumblr media
Holland en Flambe sounds like a dessert.
Rest in peace, vodka. I'm sure someone out there misses you.
Hahahahaha, this kid. He's having to hold the whole weight of intimidation because Vash looks like a rag doll someone left out in the rain too long. Wait. Does Wolfwood know Vash is here?? Heheheheheheheh.... BF's gonna be maaaaaaad....
I love Vash's expression through this bit. He's trying, but he does NOT have the energy for this right now.
Tumblr media
FWOOM
Listen to your father, Rob.
Ohhhhh, shit.
Ok, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this. I love the absolute chaos of the top part taking over the whole page, with this guy's shouting bearing down on Vash and the family from the top, claws sweeping in from the left with a motion so fast and deadly it leaves motion lines going all the way up the page... and then, cutting in at the bottom, in a panel that's practically pure-white serenity, the soft but definite *click* of the Punisher's machine gun opening. Beautiful.
Tumblr media
And, of course, we turn the page into a two-page spread of Wolfwood letting 'er rip, adding a more controlled and entirely different type of chaos to the scene.
LOL, BF's mad. Just a little, though. Confusion has tempered his anger.
Ok, this, though. How the angle goes from him carelessly tapping Vash on the head with his gun (while practicing shit trigger discipline, I might add) to us looking up at Wolfwood from a perspective very close to what Vash's would be if he could lift his head. How, in the second panel, Wolfwood looks like a desperate man about to pull an executioner's trigger out of fear and confusion for the unknown before him. How, even so, he's debating if Vash is actually the monster he's heard of when there's so much evidence that, despite superhuman skills that Wolfwood has witnessed multiple times firsthand, Vash seems so kind and cares so much for people he ends up in this situation even while half-dead.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Vash seems to be taking well-deserved nap....

Ascendance of a Bookworm Part 5 Vol. 7 dropped today, and boy does it finally pay off the previous set up.
I've presonally thought the previous three or four volumes were rather slow paced, but this one is rather action packed, and ends on a cliffhanger!
I mean, having read fanfiction that wasn't spoiler free, I knew to expect some of the information revealed, but it hadn't ruined my experience at all!

Last part of cute/heartwarming moments with these all being from tftgs vol 4!! (again context and spoilers are under the cut)
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
1st pic is from 27 and is Jerry defending Jack after Wendy (Jack's foster sister) was being condescending and rude.
pic 2 is from page 55 and basically Rosa is crying because she accidentally stepped on a lizard and killed it :( but dont worry the dark god brought it back :)
pic 3 is from page 88 and right after Jack was brought back to the gas station when he tried to leave town after he found out Sabine died. It's a really sad moment because Jack is so out of it and still very much grieving but I do find it sweet how worried Jerry got and how he basically panic bought a puppy trying to find some way to help like,,, he really cares about Jack a lot ;-;
pic 4 is from page 116 when Jack was dreaming/hallucinating/??? Spencer and Sabine showed up and killed dream-Spencer. Also Jack, seeing Sabine covered in Spencer's blood and smiling: God my gf is so fucking gorgeous (and honestly good for him!!)
pic 5 is from page 125 and after Jack got arrested for harassing Kieffer (I think?) and Jerry "broke in" to check on him
pic 6 is on page 157 and is after Jack, Benji and Whitebeard (one of the guys who attacked Jack and Jerry in vol 2) got kidnapped by the Brick Roscoes. man, I just love Jack's and Benji's friendship
pic 7 is on 252 and right before Jack, Rosa and Travis headed to Miller (Jack's bio dad) and I fucking how they're both protective over each other
pic 8 is from 305 and basically the gang are tied up and chained at the mathmetist compound by Roger's orders and a demon that is hunting Jack showed up (Jack got free from the chain by disconnecting his prosthetic leg)
pic 9 is on page 317 and is Jack and Sabine talking during a dream/hallucination/I don't know man it gets pretty muddled
and lastly pic 10 is from page 382 and is Jerry talking to O'Brien, right as Jerry, Jack and Rosa were about to leave town. I honestly think Jerry and O'Brien is one of my favorite dynamic in all of the books, wish we got more of that duo

OK finally watching oshi no ko anime, it turns out all i needed was to go outside for like an hour and im normal again
my thoughts under the cut (writing as i watch) (long) (lots of thoughts) (beautiful and true?) (manga reader) (don't read if anime only) (spoilers) (seriously) (i talk alot) (lots of thoughts)
at this point i've reread oshi no ko enough times that even if i didnt already know japanese i could probably make it without the subs SDJLF but its so cool to see lines and panels that im so familiar with brought to life!! i also liked goro's death scene, especially the way they used static and cut between shots. i keep on pulling out my physical copies of onk (well mostly vol 1) and pointing at my screen and the corresponding part of the book like
Tumblr media
2. AIIIII little known fact about me is that ai is genuinely my favorite character... WHICH SUCKS BECAUSE SHE DIES IN THE FIRST VOLUME. seriously we only ever get to see her after this when a. her name or demeanor is invoked by another character b. aqua has his numerous mental breakdowns or c. flashbacks (including but not limited to aqua's mental breakdowns). i am always down for ai content!!!
3. its so much easier to ignore the weird vaguely sexual stuff from their babyhood because i know the rest of the series is normal and cool and not into that sort of stuff👍
4. speaking of normal yayayay it's aqua back when he was actually normal and not "normal" :D like he is just a baby. do you think now that oshi no ko is popular people will get into internet arguments about whether you can ethically have aqua as your favorite character post-normalification. actually wait this may already have been happening in the dark depths of some discord server out there.. but i dont use discord so im blissfully unaware
5. OH i dont think ive seen all of the OG b komachi before? or at least not in high detail. epic!
6. infant ruby telling people on the internet "kys" before age 2... truly a model twitter user
7. not gonna lie i havent really ever liked the way babies are drawn here (including manga)... idk their heads just look way too big like adult heads drawn on toddler bodies then ""cutified"". but this is a personal gripe
8. do you think because of infantile amnesia the twins forgot about the whole pretending to be amaterasu moment. do you think miyako still remembers. can you imagine being the foster mother of two kids who you believe to be gods sent to earth. do you think she remembers that she was "charged by the gods with keeping ai's secret" and then aqua. you know.
9. imagine: you married the ceo of a mid production company because you want to date hot men. there are no hot men in sight. you have to watch over one of the idol's twin infant babies. they reveal to you that they are divine messengers of god and also they can speak normally. there are no hot men in sight. you tend to their every need because you don't want divine retribution. you explain the intricacies of the idol industry in detail every couple of days when they complain about the injustices of the world. there are no hot men in sight. you become their foster mom after they witness the traumatic death of their mother, whose secrets you where charged with keeping safe. at least 12 years pass. they never mention any of this again. you manage the idol group one of them is in. there are still no hot men in sight. your name is miyako. every day you wake up.
10. i like how gotanda gives his business card to a toddler. whats he gonna do, call you on his fisher price dial phone? well actually nevermind aqua is probably the only other toddler (alongside ruby) who could make use of a business card
11. KANAA LETS FUCKING GOOOOO but also nothing will ever top 'lick a lying snitch/flick a crying switch'...... nothing ever... :( also taking the opportunity now to say ive always found it hilarious she assumed 'aqua' is his stage name and not his actual legal name, that's how ridiculous it is DSKLFJ
12. sobbing at the ruby ai dance... dont even have that many words i just really like it.. do you guys think ai was thinking about her own mom [& abuse/lack of relationship thereof]? not even just in this scene but in her more serious moments when she's thinking about her kids it's like "i want to make millions so they can go to the nicest schools and have the nicest things" "i want my daughter to dance freely and happily and i will support her in this" which ig can also be excused as 'thats just what a normal parent wants' but idk i like taking into consideration her own past and lack of parental support when looking at the way she tries to raise her children (not that she exactly got a chance to, even while still alive)
13. also i realized at this point that ep 1 is like an hour long not just because of the whole 'we gotta make sure no one drops this before the reveal that shows what this story's actually gonna be about', but also because it would be kinda awkward to have cut any of these scenes out? or not like out completely but like from each other. like if we had ended ep 1 at for example where they do their silly baby dance and go twitter viral (chapter 5 aka the midpoint of vol 1). that wouldve been terrible. but we can't cut it any earlier, or any later. ai's death feels like the natural conclusion to this problem. also i can't really see much of the other sections being stretched out to fit a full episode length being done very well. having ep 1 be a full 90 minutes lets them be as long as they need to be, aka a 1:1 adaptation of the manga.
14. oh boy chapter 9 time
15. i don't have anything to say about ai's outlook that has not already been said but this is the scene that made her my favorite character. not being able to tell at what point your lies become reality.. not really knowing if you've ever loved or been loved truly because your entire concept of 'love' was based off insincerity necessary for survival.. and now not ever being given the chance to explore what 'real love' means to you. FUCK
16. aww i love all these little family moments they added! very cute ^_^
17. yayy go kids get traumatized ^_^ also for some reason i remember the stalker as having really light hair o-0 fascinating. i remembered his name though!! just like ai fr
18. speaking of hair i also did not realize saitou was blond i thought he had brown hair..
19. hey the bandana (? i forget the word) guy holding the ai fan sign during the news montage is from one of the intros to the vol 1 chapters where hes like 'oh yeah i wonder where those dancing babies are now'!
20. another part of that montage shows a house with a wii in it, which came out november 19 2006. characters are shown using twitter which started earlier that same year; it was a pretty popular website even in 2008, but the mobile app only became a thing in like 2010. i'm seeing a mix of flip phones and smart phones so this has gotta take place sometime around 2010. it's kinda difficult to tell exactly what age the twins are in the main story because like the first page of vol 2 has ruby listing her age as 14, but - and the proof is not at my finger tips rn - i swear to god they're like 16 at this point. i have legitimate reasons to believe this but i need to grab exact proof adding to that we also have 15 years of lies, which if im remembering right would be referring to the twins age? i was trying to logic out exactly what year oshi no ko takes place in even though i already know the answer is 'in the modern day' but anyway yeah i'll just finish my episode and move on
21. THE IPHONE RUBY IS HOLDNIG HAS A HEADPHONE JACK. i want so badly to say that's an iphone 4 but there's like a separation between that and the power button. i also dont have an iphone 4 with me so i cant check it irl :( but anyway the iphone 4 was released in 2010, meaning the evidence is piling up for this part of the story taking place some time around 2010. or maybe i'm looking too deeply into this and should go back to actually watching the episode.
22. this is reminding me i was gonna write a fic specifically about this time period where the twins go to therapy and have to adjust to life without ai, having miyako graduate from fake mom to actual mom, aqua faking being fully recovered from the incident so he'd be released from therapy (fic concept was inspired from him stating this in like vol 6), etc. i never did because i spent like 3 hours researching play therapy and never got anywhere with it.. but maybe...
23. THE KIDS HAVING TO WATCH HER FUNERAL THROUGH THE FUCKING CAR WINDOW... I'M GOING TO KILL MYSELF
24. YESS AQUA NORMALIFICATION COMPLETE
25. AM I INSANE OR IS THAT AKANE? HER HAIR COLOR IS THE SAME BUT IT'S SO SHORT
26. MEM!!!!
Tumblr media
27. AHHH POST CREDITS AI MAKING HER VIDEO FOR THE TWINS "i don't think i'll still be an idol by then" YEAH BUT AT WHAT COST 😭
FINAL THOUGHTS: i liked it alot ^_^ i dont really watch that much anime anymore (not that i watched an incredible amount before, but i am familiar with it) but i really liked this. i think they did a very good job of adapting the first volume! i know the rest of the episodes will be not-film length which does make me a bit sad because i think it would work out well, or at least not badly, if they were. it does also make me really excited for the future, seriously i will actually explode when i see the theater arc in full. cannot wait to see aqua mental breakdowns and ruby evil arc and and and and
the only thing i would've liked is if they could somehow have found a way to incorporate the pre-chapter intro scenes from the manga where they're talking about 15 years of lies, interviews with their pre-school teacher, etc. though both the pre-school teacher and the aforementioned bandana guy appear which may have been their way of doing it? like adding a fun detail for obsessives like myself to point at like 'my god it's those guys from exactly 2 panels in the manga'
tumblr ate my post and erased everything up to #2 while i was writing it and i was about to flip but it turns out that it automatically saves posts while youre writing them now and it was in my drafts safe and sound soooo crisis averted ^_^ anyway those were my thoughts on ep 1

Trigun vs Stampede
OR: Trigun newbie ponders if Stampede was a good adaptation or not, actually.
I lost my original draft. I think this one’s longer. The TL;DR is I liked them both. But.
I’m sure a lot of Trigun Oldies are pretty annoyed with Stampede, and as an obnoxious FF7 purist with an axe to grind with the “remake” myself, my sympathies are certainly with them. It’s really annoying to just want a faithful adaptation of the thing you like without people trying to get CLEVER about what made them good in the first place - especially if the changes don’t land!
However, as someone brand new to Trigun my attitude is more along the lines of “hey, three cakes!”, and I figure I’m in a pretty good position to provide a fairly unbiased comparison of the two. My Trigun creds are as follows; I’ve watched Stampede, I’ve read up to vol 3 of Maximum, I’ve watched Badlands Rumble (and didn’t like it), I’ve never seen ‘98 but have seen out of context clips and had very careful conversations with a coworker that has ONLY seen ‘98 and Stampede to try and share enthusiasm but still avoid poisoning each other with spoilers.
My original takeaway from Stampede: It’s a fun show that needed more episodes to accomplish what it was trying to do. I still stand by this. However, I think that Stampede has made a lot of clever decisions in adaptation, and I’m feeling pretty positive about the reboot in general.
Vol 1 of the original Trigun introduces us to Vash, Meryl and Milly; we have a volume of world-building and character-establishing shenanigans (as well as teasers about the “Lost July” incident) before meeting Legato and a handful of the Gung-Ho Guns in volume 2, after which we get some fights, hook up (ha) with Wolfwood and head to Jeneora Rock.
And then Jeneora explodes.
Stampede is simultaneously a prequel and a reimagining of these first two volumes. In the interest of giving us a 12-episode narrative with character arcs for all 3 main leads, certain events have been either brought forward or pushed back. For example, while we keep the fight with the Nebraska Family and the trip on the Sand Steamer, Lost July ceases being a backstory event and instead replaces Vash’s destruction of Jeneora Rock as the “season finale” - allowing Knives to serve as the arc villain for Stampede whereas Trigun ends with him being (temporarily) resurrected.
Some clever changes are made to facilitate this; if Vash destroys July at the end of season 1 there’s no reason to have him also destroy Jeneora, so establish Knives as the Big Scary Arc Villain by making HIM do it instead. Then, end the season with his apparent death at Vash’s hands - since Legato is the main villain in vol 2 and wants to resurrect Knives, push him back to season 2 so you can add some real crunch between his fanaticism and Vash’s guilt. Wolfwood is more prominent here; have HIM kill Monev the Gale instead of Legato. Then, you can have him project all over Rollo just in time to reveal his backstory and you won’t even feel the loss of Vash refusing to kill Monev too badly because the Nebraska Family is used to display Vash’s pacifistic ideology before Wolfwood gets a chance to shoot a hole in it.
That doesn’t mean Stampede is flawless; I have real problems with Wolfwood and Home’s inclusion, mostly down to the episode count, but I like a lot of the changes made in eps 1-5 and 10-12. Episodes 6-9 were strongest for their flashback segments; besides that, the pacing was fucked. Trying to accomplish FAR too much in too little time - don’t think anyone’s gonna argue with that.
Quickfire adaptation notes before I dig into the changes in characterisation;
It’s a shame that Stampede didn’t have time to do more world-building - Legato’s nonsense aside, that was my favourite part of the first two volumes.
Vash vs Monev the Gale was more fun in the manga than Stampede, but I liked the expansion on his backstory that Stampede gave us more than “I TRAINED… FOR 20 YEARS…”
EG the Mine was more fun in Stampede than the manga.
I recognise the need to get Meryl and Roberto on the Sand Steamer after Roberto wanted to leave, but the Bad Lads Gang were barely worth bringing back.
I wouldn’t have even bothered introducing Legato this season beyond a stinger at the end of episode 12; I get they’re trying to do Something with him and Wolfwood, but we really didn’t have the time.
Rem was cooler in the manga.
The trip to Home feels like a waste of time at this point, but I can only hope introducing Brad & Luida early means that if the Gung-Ho Guns decide to break in like in the manga things are gonna hurt more. I wonder if it wouldn’t have been more prudent to just go to Hopeland Orphanage instead to really dig into the tragedy of Wolfwood’s situation before rocketing into him completing the contract in July. Would’ve added more to Vash’s insistence that Wolfwood’s a good person, too - he’s objectively right, but would’ve been nice to see it more concretely.
In service of remixing the plot into a pseudo-prequel, our main 3 leads - Vash, Meryl and Wolfwood - all present as much less mature characters who are still growing into the roles they hold in the original. Vash’s bounty is considerably lower, he’s never hurt anyone himself yet (no Lost July ‘til the finale) and he’s much less capable of playing the clown to hide his true feelings; Meryl is a straight-laced rookie traveling with her mentor rather than a confident senior partner to Milly; Wolfwood is more openly caustic and is “the Punisher” and an undertaker rather than “Chapel” and a priest (whatever any of this means in the Eye of Michael), though they all more or less get there in the end.
Whereas in the original Trigun we spend a lot of time in Vash’s head reading his internal monologue, Stampede presents him more as a character to be observed or speculated on from a distance and, as such, somewhat more of an enigma. I think there’s an interesting line to be drawn between Vash’s missing POV and Stampede giving him a real consistent lack of agency - Meryl is often a catalyst for the plot, Wolfwood is transparently present to direct Vash to July whether he likes it or not, and Nai’s… absolutely everything all serve to give Vash less control of the decisions made in his life (I AM MEDITATING ON THE SAND STEAMER).
I don’t think it’s much of a coincidence that we only really get Vash explaining his feelings in episode 12 when he’s finally worked up the courage to fight Nai again, or that we get more information about his past from flashbacks than in the modern day.
I’m… fine with both, honestly. Vash being a bit of a black box in Stampede makes it harder to understand his feelings on certain topics, but I have to wonder if - assuming he’s now ‘reclaimed his agency’ - he’s going to be more vocal about his feelings going forward. I’ll be curious to see the Stampede version of the Eriks arc, anyway. Also, controversial (apparently) but I really like his Stampede design a lot more than OG - it being more ‘modern’ makes thematic sense for a character from the age of Lost Technology, and he looks less dangerous than OG Vash who… well, Diablo, you have shown your true face, Tristamp Vash isn’t there yet til the finale, etc. etc. That said, he needs a new design for season 2, and I hope it incorporates more elements of his OG.
Not much to say on Nai; he’s got a larger role in Stampede than OG. Obviously.
I think that Stampede did Meryl a LOT of favours - where OG Meryl gets more time on the page, Stampede’s Meryl is IMO set up to become a stronger and more impactful character in the long run. I found that OG Meryl and Milly blended together a bit too much; two halves of one comedy skit that were often difficult to meaningfully differentiate.
Stampede’s Meryl gets to establish herself separately from Milly and has a much more obvious counterpoint in Roberto, who gets to die a tragic mentor death and propel Meryl’s character forward into, apparently, an exhausted chain-smoking slacker assigned a bright-eyed newbie to mentor and, honestly? I think that’s really sexy for her.
Stampede has also gone on to give Meryl more agency; whereas in OG her goal is to follow Vash exclusively, changing her profession to a reporter in Stampede allows her to follow other plot threads independently of him. It also ties in nicely to her theming as a “witness” to the changes about to rock No Man’s Land; this is part of the reason the perspective change from a heavy focus on Vash’s POV to him as a character that can only really be observed by others works for me just fine, though Wolfwood tends to ‘observe’ Vash while Meryl seems to ‘observe’ events. Also, I really do adore her being paired up with Zazie.
It can also be noted that unlike OG, Meryl is the catalyst for a lot of events that occur in the show; she finds Vash, she has Vash take them to Jeneora Rock; she helps Vash SAVE Jeneora Rock; she runs over Wolfwood which brings HIM into the party; it is her being kidnapped that brings the plot to July and she is the one that saves Vash from Nai. She’s got far more forward motion at this point than her original counterpart, and while I HOPE that changes for OG Meryl she has basically vanished for about 3 volumes at this point and I haven’t felt her absence much.
I don’t have much to say on Milly and Roberto; Milly’s not the type of character I’m especially drawn to, her presence in vols 1&2 is pretty weak and I don’t think she adds much outside of occasional comedy. I like Roberto for the role he plays in Meryl’s storyline as well as the more unique texture he adds to the group but wish he got more time to develop. Next.
Okay, so. Wolfwood. My special boy, the most importantest bestest guy in both the world AND my heart. Uh, so. He’s… not in volumes 1&2 except for the last 3 chapters, and those… basically just exist to go “hey Wolfwood exists! He does NOT want to be at this staff meeting!” which, mood, but it also means that (I assume) a lot of his story beats get introduced quite a bit earlier so that he can also grow into his new role at the end of Stampede.
As of vol 3 of TriMax, we’re still piecing together what Wolfwood’s deal even is and I would even go so far as to speculate that if TriMax Wolfwood is meant to deliver Vash to Knives… well, that’s already happened, so where are we going from here? Are we pulling other plot points forward even sooner, or have we already derailed in a big way?
It doesn’t really help that Stampede’s time crunch was never more obvious than in the Sand Steamer & Home, which makes Wolfwood’s storyline a real casualty of all that lost time. In OG, the Sand Steamer was its own arc involving the Bad Lads Gang where we get to learn that Vash is connected to Plants; in Stampede, it’s… Livio shows up, Wolfwood’s backstory gets dropped, Legato is introduced, the Bad Lads are still there, Hopeland almost gets steamrolled because Legato must always be the least normal person in the scene AND THEN we figure out Vash is a Plant… and then Home. It’s so much. It’s too much. There’s no breathing room to think about the tragedy of Wolfwood’s situation because we don’t know him very well and we jump straight into Vash’s backstory straight afterwards. I assume Wolfwood had  a mental breakdown off-screen.
It’s going to be difficult to speculate on what Stampede is doing with Wolfwood until season 2 comes out AND I’ve finished Maximum, but where I’m very optimistic for Meryl I’m a lot more cautious here because while I GET why they needed to introduce elements of Wolfwood’s backstory to tie him into the same theme of moving into a new stage of their lives that Vash and Meryl have, they’re going to need to do some real damage control in season 2 because otherwise I don’t think this is going to hit right.
Like, I do GET why Wolfwood was introduced early, seriously - he’s such a major part of Maximum that with Stampede’s goal of remixing Vash and Meryl’s arcs they couldn’t leave him for season 2 (unlike Milly, who... doesn’t do much) and they can make this work, but... he’s where things are most likely to fall apart here, and that sucks.
So like, IS it a good adaptation (of the first two volumes)? Yeah, I think it’s fine? There are more changes I’m excited about than concerned about, which might change as I progress further into Maximum, but I can only assume events are going to get remixed further (the stinger about Earth in particular makes me think that) so I think Stampede and TriMax will ultimately be two very different beasts by the end of things.
And ultimately, I think I had more fun watching Stampede than reading the Trigun manga at this point. (Trigun, not Trigun Maximum, I’ll get to that later)
But Stampede needs more episodes. Seriously. Spring for a 24 episode season, Studio Orange, take like 4 years if you need to, because the biggest problem Stampede has is timing, and that’s going to hurt the emotional impact of any plot points going forward. We can live with it in s1 where the fallout for some of those has yet to hit, but that grace period won’t last forever.
Final Verdict:
Tristamp 8/10 “needed more episodes” Trigun 7/10 “legato saves you, seriously”
In conclusion: “Whoa! two cakes!”

SKB Volume Timeline
this is basically an estimation of the length of time the story takes place over per each volume, based on scraps of info we’re provided in canon. CONTAINS PLOT SPOILERS.
we’re never explicitly told what month/year it is, so I’m using the start of volume 1 as “time 0″. all calculations will be in reference to how long after 0 they happen.
Timeline
VOLUME 1 - START: 0
VOLUME 1 - END: 1 month
Jabi only has a month left to live before he dies of his rust infection, but he’s cured before that happens.
VOLUME 2 - START: 7 months, 2 weeks
It states in the intro that it’s been about half a year since the kurokawa incident had been wrapped up. There’s an additional 2 week timeskip after they meet up with some other mushroom keepers.
VOLUME 2 - END: 8 months
2 weeks is honestly generous. when bisco’s stomach is stolen, he only has 5 days to live. most of this volume takes place during those 5 days, milo and bisco do some traveling around during the intro that I presume takes a few additional days.
VOLUME 3 - START: 8 months, 1 week
From context, it’s clear that this takes place almost immediately following volume 2. I estimated about a week difference because of bisco/milo/tirol traveling from izumo to ehime.
VOLUME 3 - END: 9 months
The timeline is super unclear in this volume, but things seem to happen pretty fast. I gave 3 weeks as a generous estimate.
VOLUME 4 - START: 1 year, 4 months
The only hint we get toward the time difference is that satahabaki was away for 6 months and only just returned, but pawoo thanked him for protecting the area during the apollo incident. so the events of vol 3 happened at least 6 months ago, but I tacked on an additional month for good measure.
VOLUME 4 - END: 1 year, 5 months
Most of the time I estimate is just traveling during the intro/pre-story. I think the main part of the story (when they’re in rokudou prison) takes a week or less.
VOLUME 5 - START: 1 year, 5 months, 2 weeks
The time difference is very short, but just long enough for the benibishi to have begun their war. so little time has passed that bisco and milo’s wounds from fighting satahabaki haven’t healed yet, so I’m guessing there’s a <2 week difference.
VOLUME 5 - END: 1 year, 5 months, 2 weeks, 2 days
Takes place over the course of only 2 days MAX. Towards the end, bisco jokes about how many times they felt like they were going to die “in the course of this one very busy day.”
VOLUME 6 - START: 2 years, 5 months, 2 weeks, 2 days
Technically this volume starts right after the end of 5, but there’s immediately a 1 year time skip.
It is stated to be autumn post-time skip (so sometime late sept ~ late dec)
VOLUME 6 - END: 2 years, 8 months, 2 weeks, 2 days
The cat-and-mouse chase around japan with kurokawa probably takes only a week-ish considering how they’re constantly on the move.
The majority of time added on here comes from the end of the story, where there’s a flash forward to when jabi dies. jabi states that he had a month left to live, but the choushin-kyu extended his life a little bit. i’m guessing it wasn’t any more than an additional month or 2.
It’s now probably dec~feb
VOLUME 7 - START: 3 years, 8 months, 2 weeks, 2 days
There’s a seemingly large timeskip, but it’s never hinted at how much time has passed. I think it’s AT LEAST a year, but possibly up to 2 years based on milo having a steady job, and rusting affecting the cat realm for long enough for them to start dying from it.
The festival happens on cat day (irl cat day is february 22) but it’s described like a typical summer festival? February would also make sense since that aligns perfectly with the calculation from vol 6.
VOLUME 7 - END: 3 years, 9 months, 2 days
The plot happens over the course of about a week. thanks to the many “The next day...”s for making this easy.
VOLUME 8 - START: 4 years, 2 months, 2 weeks
It is now ACTUALLY summertime. this re-confirms that the festival in vol 7 was in february, making this a 4-6 month timeskip (averaged to 5 for the calculation above).
We’re ignoring tirol and amli’s stated ages because they make no sense (another sad example of an author not paying attention to their own material😔). see below for actual age calculations.
VOLUME 8 - END: 4 years, 9 months, 2 weeks
Skips a few months to when pawoo is giving birth, though it’s noted that she gave birth “very early.” So I added 7 months instead of 8.
It’s now jan~march
VOLUME 8 - EPILOGUE: main story + 20 YEARS OR MORE
Salt is an adult now, i’m guessing around 20 years old or maybe a bit older. he lives on his own and is an established writer
So how old is everyone?
I’m not sure if it’s canon or fanon that milo’s birthday is march 6 (3/6 can be read as “mi-ro”) but let’s assume it’s true because i like it. we learn in vol 6 that it’s autumn, so calculating backwards, this would make vol 1 take place sometime in april~june. his 17th birthday had to have already passed that year, because his age is listed as 17 on the wanted posters at the end of the volume.
this means he was: 18 by vol 3 > 19 by vol 6 > 20 by vol 7 > 21 by vol 8 > POSSIBLY 22 by vol 8 end. bisco is presumably the same.
we don’t know tirol’s birthday, but she says she’s 21 years old in vol 3. this would make her 21 in vol 1 > 22 by vol 6 > 23 by vol 7 > 24 by vol 8 end.
amli is 14 in vol 2, making her 15 by vol 5 end > 16 by vol 6 end > 17 by vol 7 or 8.

My #1 post of 2022
this is your daily reminder to write that fic! who cares if it’s a dying fandom, bring it back to life! who cares if you only have a sentence, you’ll get there don’t give up! who cares if it’s a self indulgent fic, we love to see it! who cares if it’s an overdone trope, you’re making it unique in your writing style! who cares if it takes you a month to write a fic and then you dip, you’re still writing and sharing your work and that’s what matters! who cares if you write for yourself and never post it, you’re still writing and getting your ideas down and that matters just as much as if you posted it! just keep writing, you got this <3

~february 2023 reading wrap-up~ hello loves!! this month i procrastinated so much on school and work, and instead i read sooo much. so here is a brief recap of what i read!
Total Books: 24 | Re-Reads: 2 | Average Rating: 4.06 ★ | Overall 2023 Reading Goal: 40/50
note: if you read further,, there will be some minor spoilers. also if you decide to pick any of them up make sure to check the trigger warnings. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
#1 - Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun, Vol. 2 by Aidalro Rating: 5★ | Format Read: Physical this manga series is continuing in such a fun and interesting way. there is a development in the romance and found family,, and I LOVE the found family in this series. #2 - Fade by Tanya Saracho Rating: 3★ | Format Read: E-Book this play was okay, there is some interesting commentary on the characters LatinX identities and those parts were engaging. i felt like the ending was predictable. my rating might change if i saw this staged. #3 - Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War, Vol. 3 by Aka Akasaka Rating: 4.5★ | Format Read: Physical it's been sooo long since i continued this story, and i'm so glad i picked it back-up. great deepening of romance and friendships. definitely need to continue this series.
#4 - The Tradition by Jericho Brown Rating: 5★ | Format Read: Physical this poetry collection is absolutely beautiful. and exploration of race, love, queerness, rape, and so much more. my favorite poems were: Trojan, As a Human being, and Bullet Points
#5 - Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer Rating: 4.5★ | Format Read: Physical wonderful non-fiction discussion of indigenous wisdom and scientific information. there were a few mentions of pretty traditional roles (that she believes in for herself) that i didn't love. but overall it was beautiful written and had a lot of wisdom.
#6 - Uncomfortable Conversations With A Black Man by Emmanuel Ocho Rating: 4.5★ | Format Read: Audio this is a very palatable non-fiction about racism that black people face in america. for white people who haven't done any anti-racism work, i highly recommend.
#7 - The Son Of Neptune by Rick Riordan Rating: 5★ | Format Read: Audio i love this book, i love the new camp and this trio. hazel and frank have my whole heart.
#8 - Gruesome Playground Injuries by Rajiv Joseph Rating: 1.5★ | Format Read: E-Book i did not like this play at all but i had to read it for class so i finished it. it is a glamorization of abusive relationships that are built on an idealization of self-harm. the only reason it wasn't a 1-star was because there is the use of a cool narrative tool of jumping around in time through traumatic events that connect the characters. but besides that it made me physically ill because it made me so upset.
#9 - Electric Arches by Eve L. Ewing Rating: 4★ | Format Read: Physical this is a beautiful collection of poetry, prose, and visual art that explores black womanhood. i wish it was longer. my favorite quote was: "i wanted a map not to know where things are but to know where i am." #10 - Tristan Strong Punches A Hole In The Sky by Kwame Mbalia Rating: 5★ | Format Read: Audio i have had this middle-grade on my tbr for sooo long and i kept procrastinating,, and why did i keep myself from this gem for so long?? love the characters, the world-building, and the important topics discussed.
#11 - I'm Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness by Austin Channing Brown Rating: 5★ | Format Read: Audio amazing non-fiction that focuses on the intersectionality of black womanhood. it is wonderful to hear her experiences and she needs to write more because it is so good.
#12 - Stage Management Theory As A Guide To Practice: Cultivating a Creative Approach by Lisa Porter and Narda E. Alcorn Rating: 3.5★ | Format Read: E-Book i had to read this for class, but it was interesting. full of a lot of great theory about stage management/organizing people. i wish there was more pracitcal advice.
#13 - The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna Rating: 4.5★ | Format Read: Audio this book was so wonderful. it is as if the book "Nothing To See Here" had a cozy baby. and the romance?? i was crushing on the love interest sooo much.
#14 - Tristan Strong Destroys the World by Kwame Mbalia Rating: 3.5★ | Format Read: Audio i didn't love the addition of the new technology in this book, and all the gods are the worst in this book. the antagonist in this book was cool though and the ending was interesting. opptimistic for the last book, but this was kind of a let down compared to the last one (for me).
#15 - Wash Day Dairies by Jamila Rowser Rating: 4★ | Format Read: E-Book this is such a cute graphic novel about love, friendship, family, and health.
#16 - The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan Rating: 4.5★ | Format Read: Audio re-read for me, i love this book but it is probably my least favorite in the heroes of olympus... obviously, i love *and hate* the ending, percabeth, and the group dynamics... but they use the word "schizophrenic" to describe the gods in this novel and that feels icky.
#17 - Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun, Vol. 3 by Aidarlo Rating: 5★ | Format Read: Physical and the series is still good... this volume has lots of great backstory and a good cliff-hanger.
#18- Don't Cry For Me: A Novel by Daniel Black Rating: 5★ | Format Read: Audio this is a retelling of a man's life through letters to his son, an exploration of black manhood, familial trauma, homophobia, and relationships. i have to re-read it physically so i can annotate it.
#19 - How The Word Is Passed by Clint Smith Rating: 5★ | Format Read: Physical a must-read non-fiction about different locations across the united states and their history of slavery and racial segregation and how that history is hidden and changed.
#20 - Off-Headset: Essay on Stage Management Work, Life, and Career by Christopher Sadler and Rafael Jaen Rating: 3★ | Format Read: E-Book another read for class, and it was okay. since it's by a bunch of different authors the quality varies and some parts are very repetitive.
#21 - Cinderella Is Dead by Kalynn Bayron Rating: 2.5★ | Format Read: Audio when i explained this plot to my roommate she said it sounded like shrek 2 fan-ficiton... anyways, even though it was published in 2020 it felt very early 2010's with the main characters "not like other girls" energy. i liked having a sapphic character, and i wanted to love her romances but it is so much of insta-love. cool villian, but the magic system is not at all what i was expecting.
#22 - What A Match by Mimi Grace Rating: 3★ | Format Read: E-Book i have the biggest crushes on characters in this book. the plot is a little all over the place, but if you just want a fun romance reed i recommend it.
#23 - Consumed: The Need For Collective Change: Colonialism, Climate Change, and Consumerism by Aja Barber Rating: 4★ | Format Read: E-Book overall lots of wonderful information about fashion consumption, it is a little disorganized but provides good intersectional discussion. i wish it would have discussed the use of prison labor and the problems with that, but that might need to be an entirely separate book.
#24 - Nick and Charlie by Alice Oseman Rating: 3★ | Format Read: E-Book sadly, this is my least favorite story in the osemanverse that I have read... nick and charlie felt extremely out of character, and i hate this miscommunication trope and that is what this is. i do still love the writing and the ending was cute.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ if you read this far thank you so much <3 share what you have read recently ~mo
I made a Reading List for the Sailor Moon Manga Canon
I composed this reading list for the entire manga, Sailor Moon, Sailor V and the side stories too.
  I admit I haven’t ‘road tested’ this list so if anyone tries it out (or even just looks over the below) and has any advice to improve it I am very open to taking suggestions.
The names of the chapters are in reference to the Eternal Editions which I used as the ‘skeleton’ for this list. My aim was to include everything in such a way that did not give away spoilers and retained as much drama and narrative flow as possible. My thinking was, how would I recommend the series to a first time reader who wants to experience everything at once.
  To this end I opted to avoid disrupting the Sailor Moon story arcs and slot everything else in between them. In general I tried to slot everything in as close to when they chronologically take place as possible, so if a side story takes place during an arc I’ve placed it immediately after that arc for example. The downside of this is that the narrative flow gets interrupted whenever an arc ends in a cliffhanger that gets picked up at the beginning of the next arc.
  My internal rationale for this is that the arcs are akin to a season of television, wherein you inevitably get breaks in between anyway. So the side stories are a chance to decompress after the climactic events of one arc and before we begin a new one. If you are a Marvel fan, it is a little like getting two more relaxed Marvel movies immediately after Avengers: Infinity War’s cliffhanger and before Avengers: Endgame picks up after said cliffhanger.
  With all that out the way, here is my proposed reading order:
pansy and daffodil for the flower asks!
Daffodil
1: I used to call my teddy bear 'Bei' because I couldn't pronunce the word 'bear' or 'bär', in German (part of my family is of Austrian descent) 2: I started reading when I was 3yo 3: during primary school I didn't have permission to watch tv after 9:30pm. My mom was a huge X-Files fan back then so I remember being absolutely creeped out but the intro I could hear playing from the living room, every Sunday night 4: one of my fave albums to listen to on the bus during field trips was Queen's Greatest Hits vol.2 5: and Brian May was my first celebrity crush ever (I blame the hair) 6: I probably read Matilda + The Witches by Roald Dahl and Der kleine Vampir/The Little Vampire saga by Angela Sommer-Bodenburg a bazillion times 7: I had people gifting me earrings (for pierced ears) more often than not, as a b*day present. Spoiler alert - I don't have pierced ears 8: I loved having dinner at our family's friends' place because the conversation between adults was so boring to me I was allowed to watch a cartoon movie. I still don't know wtf thought Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings was a suitable choice for a 5yo… but that was the movie I would always ask them to play for me, since it scared me to death
Pansy
1: it's the second biggest city in my Country 2: our metro/underground system has five lines while Rome (the capital city) only has three 3: on top of the highest spire of our main cathedral stands a Madonna statue covered in real gold foil. The statue had to be wrapped up in rags during WW2 so that British pilots couldn't spot it's shining surface and drop their bombs right in the heart of the city 4: Milan is famous for being very 'fashionable'. In fact, there's a particular area known as the 'Golden Quadrilater' (or Quadrilater of Fashion, a literal translation of its Italian name) which is bordered by four streets full of top-end boutiques and retail outlets that belongs to the world's major fashion houses 5: one of Leonardo's masterpieces, L'Ultima Cena/The Last Supper is located in its original painting place, the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie/Saint Mary of Graces, not far from the city centre. Leonardo also designed a floodgates system that was used to navigate the river that runs across the city - the floodgates are still visible today but they're not in use anymore 6: it's an ancient city so there's plenty of ghost stories, superstitions and interesting facts connected to the spiritual world (for reference: 🎃, 🎃, 🎃) 7: traditional dishes of my city include: saffron risotto with ossobuco (sliced shin of veal containing marrowbone), panettone and milanese cutlet
Okay, Stranger Things Vol 2 wrap up. No tags except for spoiler tags because I am quirky I feel like my thoughts have no power Okay, let’s just get right down to it, Byler. My love. My life. The thing I told myself not to hope for and went on a roller coaster through for anyways.  Basically, no... but one sided? Personally I still think that Byler may happen in season 5 because no one finished their character arcs this season (Unless you call Mikes stupid fucking monologue in ep 9 the end of his arc). There wasn’t even an end to the plotline this season. No matter what though, I can’t help but agree that what they did with the marketing and writing for Will Byers in particular was awful. Using Wills monologue just to force more drama in and bring Mike and El back together was.... ewwww. And at the end of pride month too???? They didn’t have to make the two plots interconnect yet they did. Oh, and I am so glad I wasn’t the only one wondering what in the world possessed the writers to have Mike say that the day he met El was the day his life began??? YOU MEAN THE WORST DAY OF EVERYONES FUCKING LIVES??? The day your best friend went missing, the day you were out in the rain looking for him, the day El finally escaped that hell hole and just saw a man get killed??? WAS THE DAY YOUR LIFE BEGAN????  Anyways, if they don’t have major character arcs in season three that make actually fucking sense then I am pretty sure this is just going to become another show people will only rewatch like the first or second season of and then drop again. Speaking of Jonathan and Nancy, so this is a main reason I am more hopeful of Byler becoming a thing and Robin finally getting a girlfriend. Is that Jonathan and Nancy never broke up and are still lying. Meaning that the arcs definitely aren’t finished. I think they should have just released it all together but obvious Netflix didn’t want people just subscribing for that month (Thanks scumbags. Jokes on you because I didn’t pay a dime to watch your show) but it just would make more sense to have a split between seasons and also wouldn’t have led to so much build up for all the things that are dragging it down now.
Eddie Munson now was somebody I did expect to die this season. I guess I wasn’t paying enough attention because some people said he was suppose to be a part of season 5?? IDK, I am used to new characters dying. It’s kinda an annoying pattern.  In full, this show is going to have to be fucking good in season 5 to win people back over. At least it’s queer viewers after it pulls that shit. Also, Mike needs to get his shit together P.S I enjoyed watching it but definitely so much wrong with this season. The biggest way to fix this would obviously be treating your fucking queer characters with respect.
