Game design is hard, especially if you're just starting out, especially if you're expecting to have to do it all by yourself, especially if... the list goes on and on. So I'm making this post for myself.

From about 4:28 to 6:40, Tom Happ gives some insight into his creative process. Transcript as follows:

"I'd say to myself, like, 'This is just gonna be so much work.' Like, I envisioned the mountain of work that it takes to continue with this for another 4 years or however long it might have taken.

"So, I think, like, I made this mental adjustment where, like, I figured out, if I can make sure that whatever I'm currently working at is enjoyable and gives me good feedback from day to day, and then I could just keep that on repeat until I'm done, it would be a lot more doable. So I would be like, I planned it out, and that's kind of how I came up with this process of, where I would do the environments first and then do the animations, and then do another thing and not go back and forth, because you know exactly what you're gonna do next, and you can be thinking like, 'I have more of these ideas for what I'm gonna do tomorrow,' and you get better at it as you go, as you do that one thing.

"That kept me from ever getting into a point where I'm like, 'Ah, man, I'm slogging through, uh, you know, collision physics, and I still have to do all the art for, like, eight more areas of the game that are huge.' Whereas this was more like, 'Okay, I'm done with all the environment art, now I have the monsters.' If I ever felt like, 'Ah, man, there's too many monsters in this,' I could be like, 'but all the environment art is done, I can just slap that right in there and it's ready to go.' It kind of, like, built on itself, you know what I mean? The further you went, the more pieces you had and the more easier [sic] it was gonna get when you get to the final stage and you're doing the level design.

"The game is almost its own thing, you know, its own entity, outside of me, as opposed to, like, something I designed, even though I did design it. It started to feel less and less like something I was just putting together in a way that happened to make sense, and more to be like something that, it was kind of happening and I was just reporting on what I saw or thought, you know?"

[Everyone shouts in happiness as Grian clutches the fall with a water bucket, followed with cheers and compliments] Grian: Oh, he learned it! Gem: Grian! Grian: Let's go! Let's talk about Hawaii and $700 payments.... by beau of the fifth column August 19, 2023 you're going to have a disaster relief center. something with that name. relief short term. this is where you're going to get like MREs, water, and ice is what normally shows up. normally run by the National Guard or a non-profit, maybe the Red Cross. then there is going to be a disaster recovery center long term if you need help financially. that's going to be FEMA. there will be undoubtedly resources available for temporary housing, Hotel reimbursement, Public Assistance grants

The Library of Congress’ Alexander Hamilton Papers digital collection has some of the worst item organization I have ever encountered, but hey, at least at this point I’m able to easily read Hamilton’s particular style of 18th century cursive without too much difficulty?

Outside a handful of situations, this skill is pretty useless, but a skill is a skill, I guess. 😂

Partial Transcript - a Middle-earth Dystopian AU

One hundred and fifty years after a technological arms race, the Noldorin system of geoengineering has proved dominant over (and annihilating to) the resource-intensive Melkorian industrialism. Now, the Noldor live in great towering havens where they rule over the sky, known as the Beacons. The descendants of the Melkorians survive on the depleted Ground, scraping what lives they can out the waste of a once-great technological culture, heavily surveilled and criminalized by a system of bureaucratic Noldorin Councils. Smack dab in the middle of these tensions, Halbrand Gorthaur, known dissident and purveyor of Melkorian ideology, finds himself under suspicion for the recent disappearance of one of the Noldor. His Beacon-mandated defender (and suspected paramour) Galadriel Arafinwë has seemingly vanished into thin air, which is not an easy feat under the ever-watchful eye of the Beacon seeing stones. The stone-magic is the source of the Noldor's dominance across the entirety of the Beacon-range, and it's all justified by their Great Project, the Preservation of Worldly Beauty, their organic superiority -- or so they like to believe. But Galadriel had a different belief system, and now Halbrand has no idea where she's gone. He does, however, have a troubling blank spot in his memory from the days surrounding her disappearance. After failing to rouse the loyalty of his collaborator Thuringwethil, Halbrand sets out on his own, desperate to avoid being thrown in another gilded prison, but he's not entirely defenseless. He carries with him some of the last of the Melkorian comm tech -- the secret kind that can outsmart Noldo stones. As Halbrand travels the Ground, meeting old friends and making new enemies, passing along messages both mundane and coded, he suspects Galadriel may be playing a game of her own. But he has no means of fathoming where she's been hiding, how far her plans reach, or just how central he already is to their fruition. After driving himself to the very edge of the Beacon-range, Halbrand -- if he can even call himself that -- will face an entirely new challenge: an unmapped wilderness more hostile than anything he's encountered before, and a true psychotic break.

“It is one of those things where it’s important when you’re going through chronic pain or issues to not, sort of, just say ‘you’re okay’ and ‘you’re fine’ when you’re not, which is kind of what I was doing for the best part of eighteen months, two years.
