Not Tenoch related, but I just saw pictures of the damage in Maui from the wildfires. I am heartbroken.
The unquenchable thirst for power and greed has led us all to the brink of collapse of our ecosystem. And certain people still have the audacity to deny climate change.

Hi, everybody! Guess what? I turn 30 in a week!
If you're like me, you were devastated to hear about the wildfires that ravaged Hawaii recently. One of the best birthday presents you could give me would be to join me in donating to Direct Relief as part of the aid effort: https://donate.directrelief.org/give/406660/#!/donation/checkout
You could also donate to any of these other charitable causes I support! Thanks for all your help!

@a111sen on TikTok
I haven’t really been on the internet these days, so this is the first I hear about the wildfires in Hawaii. The videos are horrifying and my heart is hurting for all the people affected. Please go watch her video to get informed if you have TikTok and share it to spread awareness or donate if you can. Hawaii is in dire need of help.

It’s tragic hearing about all these Hawaiian wildfires recently. What do you two think of these awful events?
Doverstar
I can't speak for Arti, as always, but I think it's devastating. Of course. I mean, our opinions don't matter on this subject because we're not directly affected, but you asked, so- I've only ever been to the Big Island (Kona, Hawai'i) myself, but I remember when I was on the beach I climbed this tiny little cliff and could see Maui from the top of it, right across the ocean. It seemed huge and very green, and now it's on fire. I know each of the islands have caught fire in some capacity, but obviously Maui's gotten the worst of it. If it were anywhere in the world it would be terrible. It's terrible that people are dead, missing, dying, hurt, grieving, and far lower on that list is the sadness that comes with losing lots of history for the people who have lived there for generations. Pray for them! Pray that the Lord will send rain to rock the island and put the fires out for good, and that relief will come for the poor locals and the islands' visitors.

nature is amazing. we have to do more and less hurt to it.
(source: new york times | 20 sep 2023)
Steve Nimz, a volunteer arborist who has been helping to restore the banyan, said that he was optimistic, given that trees have long adapted to severe conditions such as hurricanes, storms and fire. “It’s not like they haven’t been through this before, through the millions of years they’ve been around, so they do adapt,” he said.
He cautioned that it might be too soon to identify the lasting effects of the fire. “Just because the new leaves come out doesn’t mean the tree is going to completely make it — it just means that the tree is moving in the right direction,” Mr. Nimz said.
“The tree’s going to be talking to us,” he added. “And we’re going to listen to the tree.”

Lahaina: A Predictable & Predicted Disaster
In the days leading up to August 8, 2023, the National Weather Service issued High Wind and Fire Warnings. It repeatedly warned that these conditions would create the perfect environment for wildfires. The National Weather Service noted in a Tweet Sunday, August 6, 2023, that significant differences in atmospheric pressure between Hurricane Dora and the air north of Hawaii formed a pressure gradient over the islands which, when combined with dry conditions, posed a serious threat of fires as well as damaging winds.
On Monday, August 7, 2023, at 4:42 a.m., the National Weather Service issued red flag warnings due to months of drought, low humidity and high winds. The National Weather Service predicted high gusts of wind up to 60 miles per hour. Maui fire officials also warned in an alert issued August 8, 2023, that “erratic wind, challenging terrain, steep slopes and dropping humidity, the direction and the location of the fire conditions make it difficult to predict path and speed of a wildfire.
These red flag warnings should have put Lahaina on a state of high alert akin to that issued to a civilian population facing possible invasion by a hostile foreign power. With the red flag warnings, the following agencies were put on notice that urgent action needed to be taken to protect Lahaina:
Department of Land and Natural Resources, which controls reservoir water that can be diverted to the parched land above Lahaina during high fire risk conditions. The DLNR actually hindered water from being released to the West Maui Land Co. (which owns much of the land above Lahaina).
Maui Fire Prevention Bureau, whose mission (as stated on its website) is “to abate fire and life-safety hazards before they can cause injury and property damage.” I have seen no evidence that the Bureau did anything to abate the fire hazard to Lahaina.
Maui Emergency Management Agency, whose job is to warn and prepare the civilian population of clear and present dangers. The failure to sound the civil alarm sirens in Lahaina is one of the most conspicuous in the entire disaster.
U.S. Department of Defense, which could have transferred multiple CH-47 Chinook helicopters, equipped with the biggest buckets, from Oahu to Maui on Monday, August 7, to stand by for fire duty.
Hawaii Army National Guard, which could have deployed units to Maui on the morning of Tuesday, August 8, to work with Hawaiian Electric utility personnel to clear downed power lines and trees that obstructed roads in Lahaina and limited paths of escape.
Maui Police Department, which could have worked closely with Hawaiian Electric to ascertain that the downed power lines were no longer energized. All of the confusion about this hazard should have eliminated before the fire swept into town. Maui PD patrol officers actually blocked off escape routes with the purported objective of preventing people from driving and running into energized power lines. This was in spite of Hawaiian Electric’s statement that it de-energized the power lines in and around Lahaina on the morning of August 8, hours before the town caught fire.
U.S. Coast Guard should be equipped with water craft capable of crossing shallow reefs like the one just offshore of Lahaina Front Street. Jet-skis equipped with powerful lights and rescue sleds should have been available to evacuate people who fled into the water off Front Street. With no water craft to evacuate them, around 100 people sat in the water for five hours, inhaling black smoke and getting bombarded by burning, wind-blown debris. Several (including an old acquaintance of mine) did not survive the ordeal.

Maui County Sues Hawaiian Electric Over Devastating Wildfires
Maui County filed a lawsuit against Hawaiian Electric Company this week over the fires that destroyed thousands of structures and killed over 100 people this month. Officials said that the utility company did not shut off power during the dangerous combination of high winds and dry conditions that helped spark and spread the devastating fires. This Giant Company Owns Almost Every Dating App The…

i feel weird posting this (incoming vent), but i do what i want.
family of mine is going to hawaii. again. and i'm secretly (not secretly) salty about it. why? bec hawaiians don't need tourists rn. bec hawaiians haven't needed tourism for a while now. tourism has been fucking with the ecosystem but privileged ass people don't care.
i'm annoyed/angry bec they've been going every year for a minute now, starting from when my uncle in-law insisted they have their wedding there. my aunt didn't want to have her wedding in hawaii. she wanted it in a church. she wanted her family to be there. she only had her daughter and grandson there. the rest of the guests were HIS friends. they didn't even dress up for the occasion. didn't even dress up for their friends' wedding.
and my uncle in-law has been going there for years. he could go one fuxking year without going, but NO. god fuxking knows why. bitch was always telling me about how i would love it there, but when my aunt invited me to the wedding? the man could not stand it. you know what? fine. traveling to another state in the middle of a pandemic was a shit idea anyway. my aunt said she would make it up to me, but i just wanted to be there for her. not that they've even tried making it up to me. not that he would let her if she tried.
so have fun fuxking the place you call beautiful. have fun doing it year after year after year. have fun being that asshole. have fun using my delayed cousin as an excuse for travel. have fun reminding me every year why this family will never fully trust you. have fun with all your instigations. have fun in hawaii while the inhabitants grieve.
