Apparently, it's #MerMay. So I've decided to share with you guys a silver of a story I'm thinking of...or rather, a retelling of a familiar one: #TheLittleMermaid. The image above is by @MeganMissfit on DA and is not mine. But in rping it is common practice to find images online and to have them inspire the appearance you want for your character. So, this image inspires the main character of my story, Envile (The Little Mermaid), pronounced "ahn-veele". Envile is the youngest daughter and princess of the deep sea mer kingdom-city of Etlant. Her story plays out similarly to the original: goes to the surface, rescues a human, and falls in love with him. But her voice is not taken nor does she die. She is a young mermaid plagued by insecurities. Her older siblings are hundreds and thousands of years older than her and are strongly talented in water magic and other arts. However, she doesn't know her purpose. She is allowed to visit the surface at 15, and the typical events go into cycle. After the events of the story, she is betrayed, sold to a Victorian freakshow, trapped on land with no idea how to get home, speak English, has weak magicks skill, and feels helpless. More so, she comes to feel ugly inside and out. Her siblings are able to transform into a land appearance to match humans, but her magic is so weak that she isn't able to manifest a land appearance and appears as her original merself. She is ridiculed for her appearance...but marveled at for her beautiful voice. Over time, Envile comes to realize her talent in magicks is based in song (inspiration from the #Disney tale). _____ This story is still in development events-wise, but I've fleshed out Envile and her siblings quite a bit. **Long post ahead** It's #MerMay, and I have another #mermaid for you. Featuring Melusina, the second eldest sibling of Envile. The inspiration for her appearance comes from an art piece called "Abyssal mermaid" by moni158 on DA. It is common to be inspired by online images in rping story-wise. This image is NOT mine. Melusina (or Mel, for short) is a 817-year-old deep sea mer princess. There is much about Mel that is underdeveloped, but I based her history around the Melusine legend. Don't know it? I'll give you a quick synopsis: Man marries woman. Woman requests an oath of privacy in the bath. Man makes oath but later breaks it and sees woman. Woman turns out to be part snake or fish below the waist. Woman leaves man. Now OBVIOUSLY...the legend is a **little** bit more complex than that, buuuuut...that's the gist. And these types of stories are commonplace across the globe: Melusine of Europe, selkies of Ireland, swan maidens, and celestial maidens of Japan are a couple that come to mind. The only difference with Melusine is that she didn't get a cloak or piece of clothing taken away. Also obviously, my take on the legend is slightly tweaked. One of the versions of the original legend has Melusine being the offspring of a fairy and a king. My Melusina travels to the surface world on her 15th birthday, goes to France, and marries Raymond de Poitou. But the typical story occurs: he breaks his promise, and she leaves him. Melusina's magical talents, like her legendary counterpart, lay in shapeshifting: into a serpent form, into entirely human form (as a beautiful blonde-haired woman), into a mashup of serpent/woman with wings... you get the picture. Currently, Melusina lives in Etlant...and that's all I have developed xD ___ I became fascinated with Envile's sisters and wondered who they could be. Many of them are inspired by mythological figures or water creatures. This story is still in development events-wise, but I've fleshed out Envile and her siblings quite a bit.
