You Need to Watch Nier: Automata Ver 1.1a

Adaptations get a, deservedly, bad rap, but Nier’s anime is a wonderful change of pace. I’m not going to explain why many adaptions suck, small budget, cashgrab, lifeless, etc, but why this one is great and should be the standard. I played Nier: Automata around the end of 2022 and I liked it. It’s a great game with some issues. My biggest gripe is how a lot of pertinent characterization is separated into different media. There are mangas and stage plays that are canon. This information is not in the game. Due to that, I found many of the characters a little flat, particularly, 2b. The anime is only 8 episodes in, but it has breathed life into everyone. I don’t want to spoil too much, especially if you’ve only seen the anime. Personally, I recommend playing the game, or watch someone play, and then watch the anime. While you’re at it, watch/play Nier Gestalt.

9s’s future actions are foreshadowed from the beginning. His personality has been expanded on and explored. 2b has been given the depth and little shades of personality she needed in the game. I love her now. We get a2’s backstory, reimagined hacking, character building moments, Devola and Papola from the beginning, 6o and 21o, etc.

I’ve never been one of those people who thinks an adaption must be 1:1. Different mediums require different aspects. I don’t need verbosity in a movie but I do need it in a written book. An good adaption needs to expand and explore the story/characters while keeping the spirit of the original media. I’m looking at you Velma. The anime feels like the game even though its deviated so much. Yes, the cgi could be better, but the narrative it’s painting more than makes up for it. When certain story beats occur later on, I know they will destroy the audience because our emotional attachment will be stronger.

I am getting ahead of myself, the anime could totally flop halfway through. If it stays the course, though, it will be a fucking masterpiece.

I think the reason why I like ending D the most, is because it feels the best and most realistic. I took a more nihilistic slant to the game about halfway through. Humanity died in the 2000s and was forced to finally accept death in the 3000s. Aliens arrived, and they died out too. 8000 years passed, Jesus poor Emil, and we get our game start. YoRHa was doomed from the jump. The machines were fucked as well. 2b and 9s aren’t healthy. I was more neutral because I’m instinctively against main guy/main girl, but learning that she killed him 40+ times and he kinda remembers it…concerning.

Ending D is a new beginning of sorts. It’s not a “happy” ending. A2 dies, 2b stays dead (I applaud the devs for killing a main character and keeping her dead), 9s gets stabbed because he is literally batshit crazy. 2b I can understand because she’s known him for years. 9s goes fucking ballistic and on a suicidal genocide run. I picked “I’ll go” because I hoped he would give up on this foolish death errand and move on. 2b wouldn’t want him to just die. I think it also ties in with how 9s, much to his chagrin, empathizes with the machines. He’s been in their network. The towers recognize him. One just gives him gifts.

Ending E feels too happy. Pascal lost everything and is either dead or amnesiac. The androids we loved are killed by us. The machines we loved were corrupted and the children killed themselves. Papola and Devola are dead to atone for something they didn’t do. Humanity is dead. The androids and machines will be dead. There is nothing we can do in the face of endless time. I like E but I don’t like that 2b came back…or where the other pods came from (where the fuck were you earlier). I don’t hate 2b, I do think some crucial pieces of characterization aren’t in the game and should be, but consequences. Killing off a main character is ballsy and it wasn’t poorly done.

This is all subjective, obviously. 9s is my favorite and after is everyone else then 2b. Stop putting relevant characterization in tie-in materials. There’s a beautiful tragedy in D. What’s 9s going to do when 2b inevitably dies again? “I’ll stay” doesn’t speak of realization, but the tragedy of never moving past things.

1. “Man can't deal with empty nest syndrome and cannot look past an orphan child without adopting them. He takes in Dick when Dick is 12 (he eventually does adopt Dick after Dick is already an adult), after being one of many people to witness Dick's parents die. After Dick went off to do his own thing he met Jason who was living on the streets after his Mom died. After Jason died, Tim shoved his way into Bruce's life saying that Bruce needed a partner in crime solving after Jason's death (Tim still had parents who were alive at this point, they did eventually die and was taken in by Bruce). Cassandra's circumstances I'm not fully clear on but she was raised by her bio dad to be a living weapon and she ran away (from my understanding at least) and Bruce took her in. Duke was taken in after his parents were hospitalized due to a Joker attack and were/are unlikely to recover. Bruce also mentors other children heroes including Barbara Gordon and Stephanie Brown, both are close to his kids and are sometimes seen as under his wing as well, but neither see him as a parent.”
