Early blue nude acrylic painting, I feel I will return to this series. I was starting out as an artist at aged 25/26 after 4 long years at the LSE and one year at film school. I was experimenting and trying to work out what kind of artist I wanted to be. I have always been interested in the female form and abstraction and colour. But these early works depict woman as object like a teapot or ornamental decoration. The new nudes I have been working on, but not sharing, relate to body as something possessed by energies that are not confined nor can be contained only unleashed. I feel that we are programmed as women to procreate to make children and as long as women menstruate the urge to have a child is there and manifests itself in sexual energy. And yet a woman with a sex drive is depicted in cliched ways. How do I depict a woman's sexual energy and drive without reverting to old visual tropes.
