Happy 64th Anniversary, One Hundred and One Dalmatians!

Today is the 64th Anniversary to

Walt Disney's 101 Dalmatians!

It has now been 64 years since we have seen the Dalmatian Plantation on the big screen. Pongo and Perdita were going to have a happy family with their "pets", Roger and Anita with their litter of puppies, Patch, Lucky, Rolly and others.

But things changed when Cruella de Vil had her hired help; Jasper and Horace steal them, along with other Dalmatian puppies from the pet store, making 99 puppies together! Thank goodness they made it home.

We must thank this Disney film to coming into our films, and for giving us the debut of the evil, ugly, fur obsessed monster...

From my perspective, it was a great film, but the sequel was better. Also, I like to thank this film to having Sora and company find the 99 Dalmatian Puppies and bring them back together to Pongo and Perdita in Traverse Town in the first Kingdom Hearts game.

Original or Remake pt. 1: Summary

The Stories we tackled were: The Little Mermaid, Dumbo, 101 Dalmatians and it's sequels, Aladdin, Alice in Wonderland, The Parent Trap, Sleeping Beauty/Maleficent, and Cinderella

Thank you to everyone who voted in the polls, shared and liked the polls, and added their own personal accounts! Below is a bit more detailed de-brief of the nine polls.

The top three stories most people voted on were Alice in Wonderland with over 500 votes then The Parent Trap and The Little Mermaid with over 300 each!

All of the Animated versions out preformed the Live Action. What is unique is the 101 sequels: Patch's London Adventure was the stand alone winner, but when adding "mostly" and full preferences together, Glenn Close's 102 takes the crown. The only remake which outright won was the Lindsey Lohan Parent Trap--perhaps that's because so few people knew there were two????

Looking at the numbers, 4 of the polls had a plurality winner: 101 sequels, The Parent Trap, Sleeping Beauty/Maleficent, and Cinderella. (Meaning none of the options surpassed 50% of the votes)

Pretty much all of the stories were loved in one form or another. Which makes sense because our sample size is biased. The most beloved story was Sleeping Beauty/Maleficent--only one person voted against them! However, the least liked story was Dumbo, with 15% of votes against it. Not even an hour after posting people called out the casual racism of 1941.

Aladdin and The Little Mermaid also have stage adaptations which a small percentage of y'all prefer. Guess we'll have to get Broadway tickets for whichever Disney productions we can if we ever get to NYC.

And speaking of Aladdin...The poor Live Action! We very rarely have a poll option no one votes for. We would like to assume that the preference for the Animated version is testament to Robin Williams and the other great performers instead of a general active dislike of the live action. Side note: "The Animated!" on this one was the highest percentage (82.9) any of the options got while the same option for Alice in Wonderland was the most individual votes (275).

We also wanted to note: we kept tabs over the week on the percentages for some of these polls. And what is interesting is that after the initial few hours, the polls would fall into their pattern. Like the Animated Little Mermaid kept around 66% the whole week. And almost a quarter of people liked both 101 Dalmatians movies the same through out. Although, we are happy to say Hayley Mills managed to grab a bit more vote share in the second half!

We are planning to do a second part of these polls in a few months as we gather submissions for the next big tournament we host.

Looking back on the Disney sequels now, I realized 5 of had the same theme of focusing on the son or daughter of one of Disney's classic characters/couples, whether they were introduced at somepoint in the original or by the start of the sequel.

Here’s a quick sketch I drew of Hogarth from The Iron Giant and Patch from 101 Dalmatians 2: Patch’s London Adventure, two of my favorite movies when I was little.

This is one crossover friendship that’s been on my mind for quite awhile.

I might turn this into a full piece eventually.

So which 101 dalmatians & lady and the tramp characters is closest to Ventus Terra aqua

This might be the most random ask I've ever received but who am I to turn down a comparison exercise?

I'll give each of them a character from both 101 Dalmatians and Lady And The Tramp cause that's more fun!

Aqua

Aqua was actually the first thought I had, that being Pongo and Perdita! While I'm not entirely certain which one of the two I'd personally go with if forced to choose just one, without a doubt one of the two dogs that would move heaven and earth to get there family back match Aqua the best to me

A Lady And The Tramp character was harder to work out but Angel's desperate attempts to get Scamp to go home reminds me of Aqua's interactions with both Terra and Ventus throughout BBS

Terra

I doubt most people would make this choice but I really think the most fitting 101 character for Terra is Patch given that both there stories include feeling lost within there families, running away from home, and getting manipulated by an adult. Of course these events are much more innocent in Patch's London Adventure but in comparing the literal tragedy Birth By Sleep and the Disney style happy endings of these doggo movies I work with what I can

Scamp also ticks all those boxes along with having a...less then ideal father son relationship and the one manipulating him is just a straight up creepy jerk who doesn't actually care about him

Ventus

Any normal person would say Ven is Patch and Scamp, but I'm not normal and I believe they have more in common with Terra then Ven. This does make it very difficult to work out who DOES have similarities to Ven in the remaining cast that don't really have much variety of traits but I think Lucky works well enough as a spunky little guy who's struggling with complications from his birth

Honestly I can't think of any Lady And The Tramp character that matches Ven and this has been in my drafts too long, sooooooo I'm just gonna outsource that problem and let anyone who see's this post offer there own opinion
