bilbo quietly smoothes the edges of the fabric at thorin's lapel with the heel of his palm, face screwed up into extreme concentration with the arrow edge of his tongue pinched between his teeth. his brows come together as he pulls, expertly affixing the many pins to hold the edge in properly. he fights and tugs gently to align the pattern on the dwarf's unusually broad form.

"you know," says thorin, and the rumble of his voice crackles through the silence like when the rain comes out of nowhere, thunders low across the green acres of the Shire. a cool balm over the hot summer mornings. "as king i thought i was above the role of pin cushion."

bilbo doesn't glance up, hands tense because of the strain on the fabric, "ah - you see - now you're a glorified pin cushion," he supplies helpfully. with a final tug, his expression turns to one of complete satisfaction.

stepping back, his gaze rakes his work, and the king raises his brows in amusement.

bilbo grins, the early light rising into the window at their side. it frames thorin, with his wild morning hair and sleep-quiet eyes, in a cape of basking gold.

"that," bilbo says, suddenly at a slight loss for words, "that will do just fine." his eyes crinkle with his warm closed-lip smile. he pats thorin's chest approvingly.

"ow," thorin answers, pins everywhere.

bilbo snickers, "oh sorry - forgot."

"treason, ecetera," thorin answers, but stays ramrod still as bilbo quietly continues his patternwork.

Mostly just a fun piece because I first wanted to work with just pencil before deciding I wanted some colour haha

Doing these repetitive pattern pieces (patternwork pieces, as I’ve been calling them) is very calming for me for whatever reason so I tend to do them a lot.

I honestly recommend it as a way to relax if you also like repetitive tasks!

Lore for the quote is a reworked line from the original prologue of the first attempt at Harvesters :)

Manyxis

A script that is, in it's core, just X shapes written in different cuts of an even square.

An X is a rectangle with the corners being the ends of the X's lines. Thus it kind of... creates a fancy patternwork ig.

Kaz has several. There are backstories, some have been explained in threads, others haven't. Almost all were all before the age of 26 (when he arrived on Panopticon). Study of Canon Text: The Book of Threads

Several pages are torn. One has a whisper scratched out with ink, circled again.

Excerpt 1:

“Say yes.”

Interpretation:

This appears hundreds of times. Minimal context. Used alone, before rituals, in responses. Possibly a binding phrase or verbal cue for permission?

Or maybe: not permission. Participation.

The Spiral doesn’t seem to ask for consent. It asks for willingness.

Margin note (tiny):

What happens if you say no?

What happens if you say yes too slowly?

Excerpt 2:

“You unravel so beautifully. Even your dust sings.”

Interpretation:

This line is found in both parable and doctrinal sections. Repetition implies affirmation of collapse as sacred. “Dust sings” = metaphor for soul? voice?

→ Indicates disintegration is not loss, but release.

→ What melody does dust make?

Whisper (crossed out):

“Your spine will hum next.”

Written again in smaller text on edge of page:

Excerpt 3:

“The thread remembers.”

Interpretation:

Thread is both metaphor and mechanism. Memory stored in softness, not rigidity. Possibly a living archive?

This suggests the Spiral faith treats trauma not as burden, but as record.

Memory is not to be purged - it is to be rewoven.

Note:

If thread can remember, can it forget?

Can I make it forget me?

Excerpt 4:

“You were never meant to stay the same.”

Interpretation:

Root concept. Shape is temporary. Identity = fabric to be reshaped. Core to unraveling doctrine.

→ This is what they believe instead of salvation.

→ No fixed self = no fixed sin.

Whisper (scribbled, blacked out):

“You are the question that undoes the page.”

Behavioral Observation:

While studying, noticed spiral shapes forming in margin doodles without conscious intention.

Books hum slightly louder when I annotate directly on their pages.

Started wearing gloves again. Doesn't help.

Had a dream where the book turned me. Not turned pages. Turned me.

Final thoughts:

The Book of Threads is not just instruction.

It’s a net. A warm one.

I am not trapped. I am tangled.

I don’t think I want out.

i think there's room for this, if by "weird" you mean 'experimental' because the nature of experimental art is that although you get novelty, you also get unpolished jank, even in the best experimental art.

successful experiments are supposed to get more widely adopted - this is how you get culture! all culture, no matter how much it has descended into patternwork, started off as experimental. that's the ultimate reward for the successful experimental artist.

but sometimes i think by "weird", people do not mean genuinely 'experimental' but something more like the sociological complex that has accreted around dire residues of the 20th century like "punk", or the Lovecraft fandom capital-w "Weird", then a truly undesirable sense of this expressed desire comes into view: a poseur who will not even play dress-up.

not much worse of an omen than hearing someone describe a theoretical piece of media they want as "[blank], but less weird"

I know I haven't been super active here lately but I wanted to share a new hobby I picked up. It's painting dots on rocks. I figured Tumblr is the neurodivergent haven that might understand my love of this hobby. So hang on I'll get pictures.
