A-T-3 014 Graffiti Rock
Following on from the Beat Bop post yesterday here's a list of personal favourites when it comes to graffiti on records sleeves (it's mostly the classics)
[1981] Tom Tom Club - Genius Of Love James Rizzi did all the sleeve artwork for Tom Tom Club's breakthrough 1981 set and its follow-up in 1983 (A-T-3 002). Not strictly thought of as a graffiti artist he exhibited his work outside though
[1981] Trouble Funk - Pump Me Up single picture sleeve
[1982] Futura 2000 - The Adventures Of Futura 2000 Just one of a series of five records released by Celluloid that fit together to show a complete Futura 2000 artwork. The records were used to publicise the New York City Rap Tour in Europe. The tour featured Rammellzee of Beat Bop fame. More info here A-T-2 388
[1983] Malcolm McLaren - Duck Rock
Tumblr media
Duck Rock insert by Keith Haring
Duck Rock was Malcolm McLaren's first album under his own name thanks to the musicians that would become The Art Of Noise. Nick Egan produces the sleeve and employs Graffiti legend Dondi to create the lettering for Duck Rock and Keith Haring for the illustration. Egan talks about the project here. When talking about customising I'm surprised he didn't mention mods and their mopeds, I suppose that was The Jam's territory https://albumcoverhalloffame.wordpress.com/2013/08/16/interview-with-nick-egan-the-making-of-the-album-cover-for-duck-rock/
Dondi and Haring's work gets used throughout the releases from this set, including print ads and videos. The 12" cover for the single Duck For The Oyster would be even better if McLaren's face wasn't on it. Overpriced and overrated streetwear brand Supreme saw this too and went to town sticking the Duck For The Oyster artwork on their overpriced and overrated streetwear
Here's the long version of Hobo Scratch, check the bit A Tribe Called Quest ref in Award Tour. I write about Buffalo Gals here A-T-2 102 and share She's Looking Like A Hobo because I really like this track!
Malcolm McLaren - Hobo Scratch (She's Looking Like A Hobo)
youtube
[1983] N.Y.C. Peech Boys - Life Is Something Special Keith Haring does the sleeve artwork for Peech Boys album, this artwork is now reproduced on all sorts with no reference to the album. Unlike the McLaren album above Haring and Larry Levan were friends, in 1984 Keith Haring would have his birthday party at Paradise Garage where Madonna performed for him
Don't Make Me Wait and Life Is Something Special are released as singles in 1982, the later gets put on the Pumping Iron II: The Women soundtrack. Here's the dub of On A Journey released in 1983
N.Y.C. Peech Boys - On A Journey (Dubmix)
youtube
[1983] Wild Style OST with the piece by Zephyr, Revolt, and Sharp on the cover. The film follows graffiti artist Zoro played by LEE. The film is a slice of history, it's clunky but it was how many of us were introduced to hip hop Here's an interview with Zephyr about the animated title sequence https://www.artofthetitle.com/title/wild-style/
...and this is Cold Crush Crew and Fantastic Freaks from the soundtrack
youtube
[1984] Digette - Fred From Jupiter The sleeve features artwork by Kenny Scharf. This is an odd one just look at the people involved and the thank yous, it's like a kitchy Club 57 cabaret record. Most importantly though the record is dedicated to the memory of Michael Stewart who was a graffiti artist murdered by the police in 1983 https://www.insideedition.com/the-case-of-michael-stewart-the-new-york-artist-some-say-was-sentenced-to-death-for-drawing-on
[1984] Jellybean - Wotupski!?! one of the best graffiti record covers ever produced which is no surprise as it's by Duster and SEEN. There's a lexicon of graffiti terminology on the inner sleeve. Here's the SEEN and Duster bit from the landmark 1983 documentary Style Wars. SEEN's had heart surgery this time last year, hopefully his health is much better now
youtube
[1984] Rock Steady Crew - Uprock Doze from the Rock Steady Crew did the graf on all their sleeves, they are all good but Uprock is a masterpiece (unlike the album by produced by Stephen Hague)
[1984] Subway Art - by Martha Cooper, Henry Chalfant The bible. Martha Cooper's Spray Nation came out last last year
[1985] Mantronix - Needle To The Groove artwork by Gnome & Gemini
[1985] Sleeping Bag Records - Greatest Mixers Collection by Konk (the painter not the band)
[1985] Schoolly-D - Schoolly-D - Schoolly-D
[1985] MC ADE - Bass Rock Express this is just his logo on the labels but the I want to make a point in saying graffiti and Miami bass/booty bass was linked from the get go, it would catch my eye in shops (it was the graf not the booty)
[1986] Just Ice - Back To The Old School Gnome & Gemini's other classic sleeve
[1986] B-52s - Girl From Ipanema Goes To Greenland Crazy dub on this record. Kenny Scharf sleeve artwork, the sleeve artwork to the album Bouncing Off The Satellites is also one of his
[1987] Street Sounds Hip Hop 17 (to 20, and 22) massively influential sleeves on the UK graffiti scene. The first records in the series to include Miami Bass and the first with a graffiti sleeve by Artful Dodger of The Trailblazers who went on to become The Chrome Angelz
[1987] Bomb The Bass - Beat Dis Who watches the watchmen? also by Artful Dodger, he also did the sleeve for Three Wize Men's 1988 Rhythm King album G.B. Boyz
[1987] Spraycan Art - Hendy Chalfant and James Prigoff The New Testament, Chrome Angelz on the cover
[1989] Unique 3 - The Theme the design is by System. In the UK graffiti also begins to appear on the labels of underground records like Blapps and rave flyers like Sunrise, Dec 89 and Weekend World
[1992] The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde sleeve artwork and pissing hydrant by OG Slick
[1993] Alte Schule German compilation with sleeve/label art by Mode 2 of Chrome Angelz
Graffiti Rock was a pilot show made for American television in 1984

Copywriting Snippet: Keith Haring
Tumblr media
Keith Haring began to use the public space in New York City as his canvas in the late 1970s and soon gained international success as an artist for his distinct illustration technique. In 1986 Keith was invited to Berlin by the director of the Check Point Charlie Museum to paint a mural on a section of the border wall. Overnight a large part of Keith's work had been painted grey, out of protest. Three years later the entire wall came down. To celebrate Keith's colourful work we've put together a collection of records that feature his art.

Chapter 6 - Is This It?
Book master list
We then reached his house. He, again, then took me into his arms and I felt all mushy. The door of his apartment was open, and there was no trace of Aman's mother. He took me to his bedroom and this time he laid me to his bed very slowly, as if he wanted to savour that moment, and not for once he broke eye contact with me.
I was getting scared.
I started panting. Is this really going to happen now?
He started kissing the back of my neck getting towards the shoulders. I moaned. At that moment I realized that I was in love with him. I just wanted him to be mine. Forever.
He started playing with my hair and I felt so happy, for once. I looked at him. It seemed like the era of pain was coming to an end, because Aman is now with me. I leaned towards him and started kissing him passionately. I was crying, because, for the first time in my life, I was happy. He reciprocated. While kissing him, we rolled on the bed and I fell on him, and then we both started laughing.
When we managed to breathe properly and check that no bones were broken or fractured, he said: "I love you, Priya. I love you very much. I don't know what would be life without you. There have been so many moments when I wanted to kiss you so badly that I cannot tell you. I wanted to hug you, I wanted to make you mine. But I stopped myself thinking that you would never love me. You are going to think this is a complete façade. You'll think that I am a brat who plays with people's hearts. Because you heard about the relationship I had with Cecilia."
I started crying. I saw that Aman was also crying as well. I was so happy and sad that day.
Happy because Aman told me he was in love with me and sad because he thought that I may be thinking this is a lie. Of course, I knew the relationship he had with Cecilia.
She was a new girl that came from America. She was a girl that only wanted boys' attention so she can sleep with them. She was trouble. At that point, Aman was going through a rough patch in his life and Cecilia became his support, or so everyone thought. In actuality, she only wanted to be with him, so that others would get jealous of her, and she could manipulate him to do all kinds of things. Eventually, he found out that she was cheating on him, and he broke up with her.
I replied: "Aman, who told you that I won't believe you? I have always trusted you, from day 1. If you were being a pain, I would have never come close to you. And I would have probably broken your nose."
We both smiled and remembered the day when I broke Karan's nose.
I asked him while touching his cheek and cupping his face: "Don't you want to know what will be my reply?"
"I am too scared to hear it."
I looked at him shyly and then kissed his right cheek. My lips were caressing his face while moving from his cheek to near his ear. I then told him: "I love you. I love you, Aman. I love you more than anything else in this world."
He lit up as if he regained his life and then started to kiss me reverently and hugged me really tight. I was responding and was laughing as well.
"You don't know how happy you've made me, Priya!!!"
I wanted to know whose drawings he had made, so I started diverting his attention to the drawings. "Waise Aman, tumhare dressing table ke peeche kuch drawings hai. Kya mein dekh sakti hoon?"
He looked quite shy and said: "Tumhari aakhon se kuch chukta nahin hai, ha?" He kissed me one last time and then he got up from me. He was lying on top of me all time. He then took out all the drawings and I realized they were all drawings of me. Me talking to my friends, me standing on the balcony looking at God knows what. Me trying to do some homework in my room. Me playing with Nikhil. There were so many, that I lost count of them.
I said: "They are all very beautiful." They all looked like photographs, except they were more artistic.
He replied: "Well, the muse I used was so beautiful that I had to match up to her beauty." I started blushing and he then came close to me and started kissing me again. I had to make him stop kissing me otherwise he wouldn't leave me. Aman then dropped me off at my dorm building and said:
"I don't want to let you go. Stay with me, please?"
"Aman, hum kal milne wale hai, na? And come on, you are a good boy." I then kissed his cheek, but he turned around and I ended up kissing his lips. And he was kissing me so passionately that I might have fainted if I wasn't hugging him.
"I have to go, Aman."
He then flew a kiss in the air, and I caught it, and put it in my heart and gave a flying kiss to him and he caught it and he smiled.
He then dropped me off at my place, kissed my lips, and drove off to his place and I went into my dorm room, smiling like crazy.

Good ole boys
Neil Tennant on Dr, Dre's homey, Liza's hubby and disgusting myths about gerbils
Tumblr media
BOYS TO MEN — Chris Lowe, left, and Neil Tennant will drop the flashy theatrics when they perform Saturday night at the Bronco Bowl.
By DANIEL KUSNER  | May 31, 2002
It's a whole new Pet Shop Boys — no wigs, no eyeliner, no lipstick.
"We're not even having video. This time around, it's all about the music," Neil Tennant says in a carefully articulated Northern British accent. "In fact, this will be the first tour where I won't always have to stay in specific places because of all the onstage theatrics."
The Pet Shop Boys' frontman is describing how the gay pop-duo's new organic sound will translate into their live shows.
Now that Tennant and bandmate Chris Lowe are each comfortably in their 40s, they've stepped off the dance floor, picked up acoustic guitars and have struck a refreshing chord in their 18-year career.
Apparently, as champions of the synthesizer era, the Pet Shop Boys were ready for some modifications.
Tumblr media
While crafting material for their new album, "Release," Lowe and Tennant retreated to a remote country house to avoid outside influences on their creative process.
"I put the chord changes for the new songs down on guitar rather than keyboard. And Chris started programming drums. Using real drums rather than electronic beats. It all just started to change," Tennant explains. "Besides, we didn't really want to do dance music. We both thought there's so much dance music nowadays. That it would be more original if we just concentrated on the melody and lyrics, and slower tempos. Writing songs is what we do best. And frankly, dance music these days is not really about songmanship."
By taking this so-called "more mature approach," the Pet Shop Boys are hoping to draw attention to their intelligent compositions and their ironic sense of humor.
In a flash of clever brilliance, they recently penned "The Night I Fell in Love," a gorgeous ballad about a gay boy who falls for a famous rap star backstage at his concert and follows him to a hotel room for a "private performance."
youtube
"MTV played the song for Dr. Dre. And he laughed and said, '[Eminem] is going to fucking kill them!' But he seemed pretty good-humored about it. I don't see why he shouldn't be. The song is really sweet and warm," Tennant says.
"It was just taking the oldest issue of Eminem being homophobic, which I don't think he is, really. Eminem says he plays characters. And he represents the homophobia in America, which I think is a very strong argument. Everything he does is in character. So I thought I would adopt his method. I'm not suggesting Eminem is gay because evidently, he isn't. It was just kind of rating the possibilities of exposing a homophobic rapper for being gay."
Tumblr media
Sly references about the rap world are nothing new for the Pet Shop Boys.
Many suspect the band's name is a humorous take on the nasty urban myth about "gay men and gerbils."
Tennant insists that was never the intention.
"I actually used to get really annoyed with that myth, because people are stupid enough to believe it," he huffs.
"In the early '80s, Chris had two friends who worked in a pet shop in West London. Everyone used to refer to them as "the pet-shop boys." We used to say that they should start a rap group called the Pet Shop Boys because at the time there were all of these rap groups.
Tumblr media
"Like the New York Citi Peech Boys and the Beastie Boys. A lot of rap groups were 'boys.' And we thought it sounded like a weird rap group," he continues.
"The first interview I ever did as one of the Pet Shop Boys was when 'West End Girls' was released. A journalist said, 'So, Neil, what about the name? We all know what it means' She told me about [the gerbil myth], and I was absolutely furious. Anyway, I've learned to live with it.”
youtube
Working on the new album sadly kept the Pet Shop Boys from attending the marriage ceremony of the century.
"We were invited to Liza's wedding. And we even bought wedding presents from Tiffany's in New York. But we had a single coming out two days later in Britain. And we had all this stuff to do. But we saw her the following week because we were booked on the same London TV show. And then we went to see her in The Albert Hall two weeks later, which was great by the way," Tennant says of Minnelli whom the Pet Shop Boys collaborated with in the late '80s.
youtube
And as for Liza's husband, Tennant offers a diplomatic opinion.
"I don't know. My gaydar says that he seems like a manager to me. I didn't really get a gaydar reading from him. But then he always wears dark glasses. So it's hard to tell," he laughs.
youtube
Perhaps humor is the best medicine when it comes to guessing about other people's sexuality.
Last year Tennant poured an enormous amount of time and energy into Wotapalava, which was supposed to be the first all-gay music festival.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, it was cancelled when an erratic Sinéad O'Connor withdrew at such short notice.
"We put the whole bill together. And then, the day before it was announced, Sinéad O'Connor pulled out for personal reasons because she was getting married. I guess her gay phase didn't last very long," he laughs. "We thought we could go ahead and get another co-headliner. But, in fact, that proved very difficult. The promoter started getting a bit twitchy about it. So we decided to pull it."
Tennant says there's still talk about mounting Wotapalava this fall. But right now his plate is already full.
"It's a possibility. But there's no definite plan," he says. "It was very interesting — the enthusiasm we got from the promoters. You'd sort of think that the rock business is kind of homophobic in a way. But it was the opposite. Because so many people were really keen to do this. At the moment, however, we're really just concentrating on getting this theater tour going."
The Pet Shop Boys perform Saturday, June 1 at 8 p.m. at the Bronco Bowl Theatre, 2600 Fort Worth Ave. Tickets $35-$50.114-943-8088.
