On the outskirts of Pahrump, Nevada, is a massive sign reading COFFINWOOD and a monstrous menagerie of custom tombstones, refurbished hearses and dangling skeletons. It’s a custom coffin factory, wedding chapel, hearse garage and pet cemetery on the doorstep of Death Valley.

If you drive by at night, flashing lights are synchronized to haunted house music that you can tune into on your car radio.

Coffinwood is the coffin-themed complex of Bryan and Dusty Schoening that includes their home, gardens, garages, workshops, chapel, pet-cemetery, church of the coffin and business “Coffin-It-Up.”

Coffinwood is the fusion of death, fun and romance.

In 1997, Bryan’s parents and dog were tragically killed by a drunk driver. Bryan was revolted by his experience with the funeral industry. In particular, the upselling of poor quality caskets to the grieving.

Years later, his daughter asked him to make a coffin for Halloween. Bryan, a trained carpenter, thought it would be simple, but found the angles and design a rewarding challenge.

Bryan decided to dedicate himself to coffin-making and doing his part to make the funeral experience easier, more affordable and more personalized for others.

Bryan is the only coffin maker in Nevada and one of only a few in the United States. The US is one of the few countries that uses caskets instead of coffins.

What’s the difference? Coffins have 6 sides, usually tapering at the ankles and shoulders so as to reflect the shape of their eternal cargo better, whereas Caskets only have 4 sides. Coffins generally have a removable lid with no hinges and caskets have a bifurcated lid on hinges.

Dusty and Bryan met in California protesting the treatment of Circus Elephants and they have been together for over 30 years. They even have a dedicated grave in their pet cemetery in remembrance of Stoney, an elephant in Las Vegas killed by mishandling.

They share a love of the macabre. Dusty has a collection of 12 Hearses that Bryan helps her refurbish. Four of the vintage hearses are currently driveable.

The couple exudes dedication and romance. There is so much devotion at Coffinwood that people began asking the couple to marry them.

After so many people requested weddings, they began the Church Of The Coffin and Bryan became an ordained minister so they could legally marry couples in their outdoor gazebo chapel shaped like, you guessed it, a coffin.

As American burial culture turns towards cremation and the living want more coffin accoutrement, Coffinwood is evolving. Bryan makes many urns and has also branched out into cabinetry, purses, ring boxes, garden boxes and luggage.

As Coffinwood seeks to enhance our relationship with death, the couple is also seeking to preserve life. Bryan speaks at the local schools about the dangers of impaired driving and the loss of his parents.

He invites the students to Coffinwood for workshops and is serious when he offers a sober, no-judgement ride home anytime.

Most Tuesdays the Church Of The Coffin holds non-denominational services and annually, they bury a themed coffin and put up a headstone to commemorate and celebrate the passing of another year.

Even if you can’t make it to Coffinwood, the recognizable hexagonal, coffin-shaped wedding gazebo and garden planters are visible from GoogleEarth and space.

What is it?

Samhain is an old Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest season and beginning of winter (the "darker half" of the year)

What it represents

Samhain is a time when doorways to the spirit world are opened, allowing the dead to visit the living world. Some spirits were considered friendly, while others were not, and the Celts created ways to appease them.

It also marks the end of the Celtic year and the beginning of the new one and as such can be seen as an equivalent of New Year's Eve as we know it.

When is it celebrated

It is held on 1 November but with celebrations beginning on the evening of 31 October, since the Celtic day began and ended at sunset

Who to honour

Traditionally because this festival is associated with those who no longer walk this realm in a physical form, ancestors, family members, elders of the faith, friends, pets and other loved ones who have passed on are appropriate beings to honour.

Other sprits to worship

In the case you want to explore other spirits to worship, any death deity would be appropriate for example, you may feel compelled to leave out an offering to Hades at this time of the year. You can also worship the earth itself, as we approach this time of the year many plants begin the end of their yearly cycle, this is the perfect time to take a moment to appreciate the beauty in that part of the cycle.

How to celebrate

There are many things to do to honour ancestors and not just the human ancestors but the earth ones and the animals as well, this may manifest in many ways.

New Year’s Eve is upon us, and Obsidian City has plenty of interesting and unique traditions and events happening all around the island.

St. Vladimir’s

You might wonder what use the immortals have for celebrating a New Year, but the vampires love any excuse for a party. The subterranean streets of Lower St. Vlad’s will look more like New Orleans as the dark-dwellers celebrate another trip around the sun with a twenty-four hour revel in the streets. 

Bleeders beware, some ancient vampires believe a mortal turned at midnight on the New Year will have elevated skills as a vampire fledgeling, but that’s probably just superstition.

Wreaths of garlic are burned over a fire of crudely cut wooden stakes in hubristic, though harmless, ritual observation 

Old Elysia

Unlike the vampires who laugh at the passage of time in their debaucherous celebrations, Fae custom is more formal and ceremonial. Each old year must be honored and put to rest, and the New Year is a time to connect with the past, and consider the histories. 

Families traditionally feast together on New Years, and it is a familial rather than social holiday. Household spells are strengthened, and the old territory wards are reinforced by a secret fae council. 

Carynthia

Nothing says New Year’s Eve celebration more in Carynthia than jumping into a freezing cold lake or river, and placing a tree underneath the ice. Luckily, these dogs can swim.

Another common way to spend the night in Carynthia on New Year’s Eve is a large bonfire, providing you with all of the warmth you might need to ring in the new year, especially after the ice water expedition. BYOB!

Bloodhearth

Inhabitants of Bloodhearth are no strangers to the endless parade of door-to-door knocking on New Year's Day, when Redcap custom dictates personal debts from the previous year be repaid or acknowledged with a gift of food 

A New Year’s Eve spectacular will run at the circus, and all proceeds will benefit the city’s homeless population

Wailing Waters

Many Banshee families in Wailing Waters are notorious for being superstitious. A common New Year’s tradition is to smash plates and glasses on the doors of friends and family members in an effort to ward off bad spirits.

Sirens, in their effort to celebrate a new beginning, truly let their voices be heard this night. It is said that New Year’s Eve is the deadliest time to be out on the water, and you can certainly find out for yourself, and see what happens when the angelic voices lure you in.

Banshees not only do their best to ward off spirits, but to put honor on those who have passed. Cemeteries are especially busy in Wailing Waters during this time of year, and when the clock strikes midnight, you are encouraged to place a kiss on the nearest headstone. A promise.

Obsidian City Center

While normally the Velari family keeps their personal lives as such, every New Year’s Eve the famous penthouse is the scene of the annual party for the the entire city to enjoy. Well, so long as they let you through the front door. Should you make it in, the more drinking, the better.

I am currently starting my journal here with a journal page. I am hoping it will help to get some things off my chest and be a safe haven for me to express myself. I find I can't talk to many people and don't much want to bother people with everything that weights on my mind.

This year has been a tough one for me. I almost lost my life to suicide twice. I am still not sure how to feel about being alive. I feel like my soul died when I almost did. I didn't expect to come back from it, yet here I am. I found out last year my dreams of becoming a funeral director were a no go as I have an adult record from assault from spitting on nurses when I was intoxicated, as well as from when I was put on psychiatric medication that didn't agree with me and I choked a nurse. I could get a lawyer and try and fight it, but I don't have the money or the patience to deal with a court battle that could just smash my hopes even more. I still have the gift of writing though. My main goal in my life was to make double what my parents make in a year, and to be able to travel the world viewing different grave sites like Edgar Allan Poe's burial site, odd cemeteries along the way, ghost tours, art and history muesums, see the beach, and go on a real vacation. One I have never gotten to have. I wanted to do it all with someone I love beside me, and while I have that special person now in my life and I am so blessed to have them, I can't afford to do any of these things as I am not a funeral director, I am disabled mentally and physically right now and can't work, and I just over all feel like I can't contribute to society nor will I ever be able to do the things my soul has longed for my entire life. It comes as a huge loss to me. I am still grieving this loss as it is huge for me. The death of my dreams. I want to try and be positive and say things could change and I may still be able to do these things, but I just don't see a light at the end of the tunnel. All my life I have craved adventure, but have spent it taking care of elderly family, children, cleaning other people's houses, volunterring, most of my life has been confined to a home or a hospital and I just want more for myself.

I always have been one to write poetry and it has brought me peace through out the years. It is a form of self expression for me when I can't get out what I want to say. Many people have said I had a way with words over the years and I got some good feedback in my writing classes at college, so I cling to the hope that maybe they were not lying, and I really can write. Lately I've been working on a memoir about my life and I am hoping it will help me grieve as I have never grieved the loss of anything or anyone in my life. My family would never allow me too. I was always their rock and support in their time of need. Writing has always been there for me when no one else was there, and it is something I can only get better at and people can't take away from me--- a lot of things have been taken away from me this year: pets, places, comfort items, and people (both living and now passed).

My aunt passed away October 11th 2022. She was a special person to me and a huge part of my support network. I still try and wrap my head around her death and wait for the coroner to tell my family the results of the toxicology. I want to know how she died, so I can be at peace in my mind and it will stop trying to ask all the same questions over and over. I just want to know how she passed. She always told me to be careful, but why wasn't she? I am a little angry with my family right now. I have had to set some major boundaries here as of lately and it hasn't been an easy thing to do. It makes me uncomfortable but at the same time I feel a sense of relief that I don't have to carry my heavy load anymore. I've been carrying so much for so many years. It is time to let that baggage go, be freely who I am, like me or don't, and live my life for me, my fiance, and our two special pets Betty white (my dog) and Puddin J. (my cat).

I still hear the voices in my head telling me not to eat. I struggle with them because somebody in my head feels like giving up completley, but I guess that is what happens when you open a pandora's box and grieve too many things at once. My stomach is in knots. My family is at my aunt's wedding and everyone is at each other's throats. I am so glad I couldn't make it due to mental health reasons but I know I could not handle it, but at least I told my aunt to her face.

I've been having a lot of memories flood in of the time I spent with my abusive ex and being locked in the closet. I really just wanted to be loved and a way out of my situation. I finally have that now and I am working through my past in a Vampire Novel. I am still trying to peace together.

The voices in my head have been more quiet lately. I just think everyone is tired of everything and everyone. I feel like I need to be alone, but at the same time alone is all I have felt for years. Is it really something I want to feel? Or am I just wanting to push everyone away because I don't want to get too close. I just wish the World would stop or something. I hear the voices in my head tell me "don't write, you're not good enough" but then I have had many people tell me that I have inspired them and that feels good.

currently money is the biggest issue. I don't feel like my writing will ever be good enough to sell a lot of copies, even after I finish my education. Will I ever be satisfied with just being a writer? Most writers aren't famous until after their death anyways. I just know I want to make a difference in this World. Will my writing do that? I don't know. I guess I can always try. I am going to dedicate my books to my grandma and grandpa, aunt who passed away, and to my fiance. All of them are my biggest supporters. I am thankful I have been blessed to have them in my life's.

I think that is it for now. I will write more later. Off to clean, as always.

The Bitov Castle in Moravia, Czech Republic that you can tour, has a very unusual collection. Built in the 11th century, Bítov is one of the oldest and largest Moravian castles

Throughout its long history Bitov was owned by a number of different noblemen and rulers, each of whom have left their imprints on the castle’s history and design.

But, the last owner, in particular, really left a surreal imprint. 

The castle’s last owner Baron Georg Haas, Jr. was an animal lover, and sort of eccentric. He was the proud owner of thousands of animals, birds and exotic creatures from around the world, including a lioness called Mietzi-Mausi, with whom he enjoyed sharing lunch every day.

But his favorite pet was the humble canine of which he had more than 200 in the castle grounds.

When the dogs passed away, the baron buried the majority of them in the castle’s cemetery. Each grave is decorated with a wooden cross and small metal plate bearing their names.

But a select few underwent special treatment in the workshop of the local taxidermist where they were stuffed and posed with their heads up and ears cocked, as if lying patiently in wait of their master’s return.

Kan Bider, the warden of Bitov Castle, is responsible for taking care of the collection.

Sadly, at the end of the WW2, Haas was given just 24 hours by Czech partisans to leave everything he owned behind and get out of the country. Heart-broken, Haas committed suicide by shooting himself.

Last week dout Compassionuk because didn't log on and thougt because mum told them because of Dyspraxia and half deaf after that I could not log on tablet so losing faith with Compassionuk and God last week but be in all week and this week too making feel frustrated missing going town shopping use Natwest card do shopping but all stop of scarms and I decide not going Stafford town because paid cash be cash didn't work in 21 centre because always had put one things back always some one rude at you having going if put something back because can't afford and remember shopping was throw off bus so women can put push chair she even throw some rude meat of bus belong to Old lady.

So that when start shopping online for cat food £20 per month and Gluten free food was wonful order from supermarket online and like Suger mice but then war start and then PSDA insurance phone say can't look after Annabel fix the shoulder got no money So have put Annabel down on 2022 she was 16 years old. Can't show photo of Annabel haven't got Natwest card anymore haven't got mobie phone verity code and mum won't change mind on monkey phone from Tesco so won't use it. Then Sydnee was 17 years old me and mum had rows " I not put Sydnee down she my pet not put down because want going holiday a sick cat don't going holiday and stayed home that what would do." I know Sydnee was under happy so was I but mum never listern to me No got all friends and everybody tell me put Sydnee down because old ages and said No or won't going on holiday to UK with you. " " Sydnee old cat she 17 year old and supper serrive need put her down so can going on holiday with me to Turkey but Sydnee down" " I not going Turkey stay home with Sydnee if worry about die with Pet sitter won't going holiday to Turkey I not having Sydnee put down so not going Turkey." NOT GO Turkey what about money saving for Turkey it was lot of money" " I don't care about care about Sydnee "

Sadly rats in park had posion in and could not get Sydnee to vet so have show photo Sydnee wasn't eating so change food so can put in mouth forget what called but look milk but was yought.

So pray to God " I don't want Sydnee die and way She put down was awful never forgive mum for put me those this.

With Annabel she ready make her decisions it was peaceful and she gone on my knees but Sydnee was difficult she wasn't ready be put down but because of posion from cat food that making grey sick had no choice put Sydnee down even Vet said it from the photo so realy upset but Sydnee wasn't there jump over fence won't come back and called back " Sydnee food" Sydnee look this look difficult then got in the Snug and won't stay still keep moving making really hard for me so try calm down then hid under bookshelf have little injection 💉 and was out her head was out bookshelf on floor and body on bookshelf could not leave like this Sydnee was my cat she wasn't going die like that. So put on my knee sing to Sydnee and Sydnee was gone no more and took Sydnee Enchelshaw Pet cemetery get ashes and paw print but sadly have wait for Sydnee Ashes want put down ashes with Annabel because all be both together but never put down in the garden weather was bad and broken frence was broken back of Park after Sydnee gone won't going out in garden it really hurt do miss my little Angels but gone with there dog sister Darcy my little lamb tail Darcy hate cats was replaced Darcy with Dog any up cats can't replaced cat so try now have hamsters soon but can't up to PET at home because car be won't start in this ice weather.

Do believe in God out darkness come light but light isn't there yet because off soft heart get in the way ask God give sign know Darcy,Annbel and Sydnee if there OK give sign of double Rainbow but only see one Rainbow so far.

I dog called Begey but spell benny when was child but got jealous when Georgina was born didn't see benny again and then another dog called Eddie love him as my own he was first born but be Patterdale terrier and boarder terror it hard work but worth it then have Darcy Eddie mother I had rehome Eddie knew in Lichfield.I always wonder where Eddie is now ?

Miss all my dogs and cats wish could see Darcy,Annabel and Sydnee again but won't happon soul ready gone.

Still haven't put ash down because can't find with mum furniture in snug, cat shed, Buckingham place Summer house because mum furniture in there too.

Mum keep hate this black and white cat poo in front garden and mum get frustrated " Like cat"
