8. Phil Elverum

Absolutely, undoubtedly, one of my favorite musicians of all time. This man taught me out to be strong, but also how to cry. The album “The Glow Pt. 2″ by his project The Microphones has been a staple in my music library ever since I first heard it. Possibly my favorite album of all time. The boyish heartache, thoughts, and feelings are something I heavily relate to. His other project, Mt. Eerie, is still active. He recently released another album, which was a collaboration with Julie Dorion. The album “A Crow Looked at Me” is by far the saddest album to ever ever exist ever. I listened to half of it and have never revisited it. He wrote it after his mother and wife died within the same week. No person ever deserves to feel such loss. Yet Phil continues to create and feel and be in the world with his daughter.

Music about death really gets me. I think it's that death and dying are among the greatest mysteries of our human experience. I'll grab on to anything that honestly tries to make sense of it. Whenever I come across art that opens up a window into that mystery, I am utterly captivated. Mount Eerie's album, A Crow Looked At Me, is a masterpiece of an attempt to understand loss and how to continue on afterward.
