As we celebrate Black Music Month and LGBT Pride Month, let us pay tribute to the pioneers and trailblazers who gifted the world with the infectious beats of house music. As house music is experiencing a resurgence in the mainstream, it's important to remember where house began -- decades ago in Black queer clubs. Over the years, house music continues to evolve, thrive, and inspire new generations, carrying on the legacy of its roots while pushing boundaries and breaking down barriers.
So, whether you're on a crowded dance floor, grooving in your living room, or listening on your phone, take a moment to appreciate the magic of house, a testament to the enduring spirit of Black musical innovation and a soundtrack for liberation, love, and unity.
DJ MikeQDJ MikeQ was immersed in the ballroom scene in NYC's tri-state area, where vogueing and ballroom battles took center stage. The Newark, New Jersey native DJ'ed at various ballroom events and clubs, eventually becoming the main DJ for HBO Max's hit series Legendary. MikeQ became one of the first house DJs on a major television series. In addition to his DJing prowess, MikeQ founded Qween Beat Productions, a record label that released music rooted in ballroom and vogue culture. No one slays a beat like DJ MikeQ and the people who came before him -- like DJ Frankie Knuckles and DJ Larry Levan -- would certainly be proud. Listen to a MikeQ set from 2022 above.
DJ Paulie PaulPhilly's own DJ Paulie Paul has been spinning for over three decades -- he is the sound of house in the City of Brotherly Love. Originally from North Philly, Paul developed a cult following as a DJ at the legendary Nile house club in the 1990s, including the late-great DJ Donald Stone and another music master gone too soon, DJ George. Known for his seamless mixing and ability to respond to the crowd's energy, Paul crafts unforgettable experiences on the dance floor. From vogue beats to tribal rhythms, if you are in Philadelphia, be sure to catch a DJ Paulie Paul set. In the meantime, listen above.
DJ Larry LevanIn the 1970s and 1980s, DJ Larry Levan's residency at the Paradise Garage, a legendary nightclub in Manhattan, became an iconic hub for house music enthusiasts. Levan's musical sensibilities extended beyond the DJ booth. He was also an accomplished producer, remixing tracks for artists such as Grace Jones, Inner Life, and Gwen Guthrie, infusing their music with his distinctive touch. Larry Levan's impact on the house music genre cannot be overstated. Though he left this world in 1992 at only 38 years old, his legacy is forever etched in the annals of dance music history. Listen to a vintage mix from 1979.
DJ Ron HardyDJ Ron Hardy is a true pioneer of the Chicago house sound. His distinct style, unyielding passion for music, allowed him to connect to house heads and shape the evolution of house music worldwide. Ron Hardy's name remains synonymous with  the relentless pursuit of sonic exploration that defines the spirit of house music. He passed away in 1992 at 33 years old. Listen to a classic mix from 1986 above.
DJ Frankie KnucklesBorn in 1959, the pioneering DJ began his career spinning soul, disco, and R&B music at clubs in New York City. He relocated to Chicago and was soon coined the Godfather of House.  In 1997, Frankie Knuckles won a Grammy in the Remixer of the Year, Non-Classical category, and in 2004 a street in Chicago was renamed Frankie Knuckles Way. The following year, Knuckles was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame. He passed away in 2014 at 59 years old but his legacy in house music is immortal. Knuckles mastered the resilience, creativity, and cultural significance that this genre represents. Listen to his set from  2013 above. Happy Pride and happy Black Music Month!

Day 306: Wednesday November 2, 2022 - “Fall Classics”
Took in each game of the World Series this year from the couch at Jane & Dave’s as they participated in my fascination with the Sweet Sport of Ball, letting me spit facts, and strategy and commentary, and new rules.    J&D are firmly in The Phillies camp, both expressing a healthy crush on long haired Alec Bohm, especially in those baby blue pajamas Thursday throwback unis.   I keep going back and forth, with my Bulls On P guys being evenly split between the two, but going into Game 6 on Saturday, I want to see the Phillies win, to give us at least one more day of Baseball.
In yesterday’s game, the Phillies stormed out in a run bath that had the Stadium rocking.   Then in Tonight’s game - Christian Javier stood up and shut them down with starting a combined No Hitter, only the 2nd in World Series history!   Thursday’s night game featured Verlander, who we cheered for, but he gave up a Leadoff Home Run, en route to his first WS victory.    Its been a classic so far, a great and memorable World Series.  And how I wish I could be watching it from my own house but I’ll always remember this year’s match like 88 or 89 or 06 or 11....the one I watched from Jane and Dave’s house, telling myself every night, that I don’t want to ever miss a World Series game with my Son.   These classics moments will make me better.
Song: Rocky -  Going The Distance

i went to my first pride march in philadelphia yesterday, and i wanted to pay tribute to a message that's stayed meaningful and true well beyond the days of its original context. i was floored by how many people approached me to tell me they loved it—to be able to celebrate our identity with other lesbians was really really special to me. ❤

(p.s. trans lesbians are included in this and the reverse side of this sign says #LwiththeT so terfs DNI)

We’re going to ......................................................................................................... ................................................................................................................................ ........................................................................................................... Philadelphia!
Say what?!  Definitely not a location we anticipated or even really considered going to which is what makes Match Day all the more exciting!  You never really know where you’ll end up!!
But FIRST, we’ll spend this next year locally for his intern year and move in spring/summer of 2022 to go to Philly for the next four+ years!  While this program was much further down on his rank list than we anticipated dropping to, it was still in the middle and we’re really excited about this next adventure!!  Neither one of us have ever been to Philadelphia before but everyone we mention this to always has some kind of connection to the place and they’re all positive stories!  It’s also important to note that I’ll be less than 3 hours from my sister and only an hour and a half from @zerocarb!!!
The great thing about this set up is it gives us a year to get familiar with the idea and we can spend our time finding a home to buy or rent in a good neighborhood before going.  It’s also close enough (5 hours) that we can drive and look at places in advance so we don’t have to buy/rent something sight unseen.
The not so great thing about our current situation is that even though we’re staying local, we still need to move out of our current home asap because the landlord is in full swing ready to sell.  Like, is listing the home next Friday (my birthday) with showings starting on April 1st.  Super lame.
Now that we FINALLY know what’s happening, I spent all of Friday night searching the area trying to find acceptable homes to rent as quickly as possible.  Most of the rentals aren’t available until May 15th or June 1st which definitely isn’t fast enough.  Friday night I contacted four properties and have only heard back from two (but at least I’ve heard from two!)  Thankfully, one of the places who I’ve been in communication with is my current top choice.  While it’s not as nice as some of the other places, the cost is more reasonable and the commute is FAR better for Kevin (went from 35 minutes to the hospital down to 10 minutes).  We have a tour scheduled for Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. to see this home.  We already submitted a rental application in advance just to help move the process along since we’d love to sign a lease starting April 1st (you know, TWELVE DAYS from now) so we can gtfo before people start touring the home.
Before the call with my landlord this afternoon to fill us in on their timing, I had no idea we’d be saying goodbye to this home we adore so quickly.  I *knew* it was coming but it’s always hard to reach an ending.  I’m not a fan of change and, boy oh boy, is change all around us right now (new job, new home, new city, new baby).
It’s interesting, I’ve been so focused on the excitement and what it means, looking up houses and just being on full blown planning mode (yes, of course I made a spreadsheet with 11 categories all ranked by preference, price and distance) I haven’t really had time to process.  This morning I had a song stuck in my head so I decided to play it to fully enjoy it and the next thing I knew, two seconds into the song, I was sobbing.  Not sad tears by any means, but just letting go.  Mourning the loss of this home, my walking route, my neighbors, my grocery store, everything I’ve cultivated and loved the last four years.  The song?  Take A Chance on Me, by ABBA :) Not really a song that should elicit such emotion.  It was good though, healing.
In other news, my mom is here :) Not my dad, sadly.  He got "a little bug” from his recent 10-day trip to Haiti that he took to do some mission work.  Whhhyyyy he went to Haiti the day after getting his second vaccination dose and returning only four days before his trip out here is beyond me. Stupid, big-hearted man. Hopefully he’ll feel better soon so he can join my mom sometime this week.  My mom only just arrived at 5 p.m. tonight so the 30 minutes she got to spend with erp was just so precious.  We weren’t sure how erp would react to finally seeing the person she video chats with every day in person but she was so freaking pleasant and charming and just GOOD for her.  I can’t wait to see how they’ll interact together tomorrow!
Speaking of tomorrow, we’re going to an open house for another house I’m not that into (but I need options just in case).  While we’re on the peninsula we’ll drive by the house we applied for and a few others I’ve identified.  It’ll be a nice trip for Kevin and I while my mom and erp hang.
To make a long post even longer... Backtracking to yesterday (seems so long ago), Match Day was amazing.  This really is the most important day of a med student’s entire four years - way more so than even graduation.  I’m glad we opted to do the in-person option.  Seeing all the faculty SO freaking stoked to celebrate Kevin, congratulate him and just cheer over my husband was so inspiring.  I actually teared up a lot from being so overwhelmed with the appreciation and affirmation he was receiving (thank goodness for the mask covering half my contoured face).
What was equally special was that he got to show off erp for the first time.  Holding her with such pride as he strutted through the lines of faculty and volunteers.  Having people oooh and awwhh over her is an experience we rarely get to have in this covid world.  Apparently erp was clinging so tightly to him!!  She’s never been around so many people, lights, sights and sounds before.  She didn’t cry or make a fuss at all but definitely clung to home base.
We celebrated by picking up cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory and reveled in the exciting news of the day.  We keep stopping each other and exclaiming, “We’re going to Philly!”
All in all, we’re excited!  We’re stressed.  We’re taking action and leaning on each other.  Looking forward to this transition part to be over but trying to enjoy the journey while we’re on it.  Thank you for riding along with us :)

I wanted to join philly pride but it's an absolute shit show. They allow kinks open in the public (despite claiming they value consent), the entire event is not accessible for disabled, kids, families or people with dependency issues, instead they have designated "safe spots". How fucking hard is it to have a community event be drug and alcohol free and available to everyone? Most events i've gone to are.
Apparently they refused sponsors to fight capitalism and have everyone volunteering without pay instead to "go back to the roots". Maybe if you allowed sponsors, you'd figure out how to make your event inclusive.
The fuck is 2022

(just know that this isn't me at all saying 'calm down' or how to feel because holy shit, everyone deserves to feel some kind of fuckin way right now)
So there's a reason why I'll start off with this, I promise:
One of my concerns right now is that Gudbranson not bring any dirty ugly hits to a team that has taken care to try and clean that from the team since Matt Cooke. Sidney Crosby fights his own fights. Evgeni Malkin fights his own fights. Modern enforcers - and they hardly deserve the term - cause nothing but chaos and far too much damage.
The Pens don't need big hulking guys who punch hard and take penalties harder. They need defense that is quick with great vision. Which they have, but this season (and honestly last season as well) has seen all of them out injured too long to enjoy them. In their place there's been a rotating door of Rutherford choices who he only ends up shipping right back out again. The only choice he's held hard on is his worst one.
And that's where I'm going with this: the greatest enemy to the Pens is Jim Rutherford and there is absolutely no hiding or 'don't be dramatic' hand-waiving to be done anymore. Every failure this team has experienced since last season is sat squarely at his front door. The Pens as a team are not perfect but they are resilient and resourceful and have a core that's won multiple Cups together. Losses of course happen to this team sometimes but not the outright failures. The failures are in management.
But Jim is a rich old white hockey duffer, the most dangerous breed in the modern NHL. They control just about everything, they belong to a club that look out for each other above all else and they will honestly die without ever having to face consequences for their actions. You know how much I big up what Brendan Shanahan has been doing for hockey? He's considered a greenhorn. He's fifty years old, has a winning legacy that stretches throughout his entire playing career, and he's a  modern guy who can speak the language of the ancients. Yet he's still considered the young buck threatening the good old ways of hockey. We've literally got to fucking wait out the natural working-lives of guys like Rutherford to see them gone and proceed with a modern hockey that is more about playing hockey than the goonery seen from Philly last weekend that squeaked them a "win". A team like the Pens whose current dynasty has worked so hard to be more about skill and play than goons and enforcers are hamstrung by management that doesn't have the modern hockey sensibility to understand that approach and effectively keeps working against it with his trades.
As far as what this season still holds for the Pens, I'm not being remotely overly-optimistic when I say it ain't over til it's over.
- this season has been fucking chaotic across the league - every time a team (besides TBL) thinks they're up and in the clear, either a humiliating loss to a low-ranked team or a losing streak has them sliding face-first on concrete
- the superstars throughout the league are not all having their best seasons, so slumps for guys like Evgeni Malkin are far from isolated to the Pens and not all of the other guys come out of it ready to save entire games like Malkin has
- on the one hand that chaos is all a great sign of cap salary era truly coming into it's own by spreading talent more evenly across teams, but on the other it's made for extremely fraught fans on every team (except TBL)
- TBL are a juggernaut to be sure, but nip out a couple key players with injuries at this stage and honestly? shit could fall apart even for them - dented confidence was their achilles heel last year and this year's losses have proven that issue remains (which isn't unusual for consistently strong teams since getting used to wins makes losses sting all the more)
- the Pens have kept TBL on the run the three times they've met! and with no lucky breaks! quite the damn opposite considering that Jon Cooper cited how few errors TBL made to cost them their confidence in the Pens-winning game and the other two Pens losses to TBL were tight scores and solid games of hockey
- the stadium series farce (both the weather and the appalling play from the Flyers is in fact the Pens number one proof of quality: the refs were too chicken shit about Philly fans to make any calls against the home team, the Flyers saw that they were losing the entire game by the first and decided to crush the head and neck of the Pens' top two defensemen respectively, begged for time out and pulled their goalie in and out like a demented children's toy, and STILL had to rely on the fucking weather turning awful to squeak in one OT goal
So Pens' fans? Rest fully assured in the fact - bitter as it may taste - that the team is incredible. They've got management whose choices are actively working against theirs stability, their needs and their interests and they have been keeping the playoffs alive. This is without a doubt the worst hand they've been dealt in years - possibly a decade? - and the team is finding Ws and staying on the board regardless.
And trust me, while some teams flail around trying to point fingers but with no amount of changes making any lasting difference, Pens fans can point to one man and say 'this is your fault'. If he'd had his hands tied behind his back at multiple points along the way last season and this season, this team would be better off and that is salient fact-based truth that absolutely no one but Rutherford and Sullivan are trying to hide from anymore. I don't care if they're nice guys. Rutherford has a golden once-in-a-modern-hockey-lifetime dynasty held in his hands and he's mangling it for no reason. Take a fuckin tip from coach Scotty Midas Bowman: sometimes when you have more, you should do less.
Anyway, this playoffs are not ready to be called at this moment in time for the Pens (or indeed for most anyone) so for those who want to carry hope to the very end you're totally fair in doing so. The hope is absolutely still there. Equally if anyone wants to just put their playoffs hopes away in self-preservation, have a good old cry and channel their rage at Rutherford to at least get some enjoyment out of the coming games then go for it.
Everybody deals with this kind of sports insanity their own way. Use the X-Kit Mute functions, use blacklists, temporarily unfollow, vent like all hell or do what you need to cope with the madness.
Tumblr media
He’s got a contract til 2022 and a delusion of his own superiority and a complete lack of ability to admit he’s wrong (which he’s done before but apparently not anymore) so his intent definitely isn’t to intentionally tank them.
The Pens have never been in the position for anyone to think management would pull a “Lose for Hughes” so no, this really is just a case of an old man valuing his own pride over all else. His petulant reaction to routine media questioning following JJ’s signing was a big sign and his reactions to criticisms - even sometimes too quickly for anyone to have yet formed any! - is consistent proof. He’s lashed out at everyone except the few players he knows he can’t possibly survive without but he’s never once criticized his biggest mistake. That says it all.
The one and only thing the Pens need to turn around is him. He is not Jason Botterill. All contracts can change and he is not worth wasting the latter years of the Crosby-Malkin era on.
