Story of the Shift

11/6/2022

Shift was only three hours long at GameStall but I managed to get enough done. I got the new, Top 50, preowned, and price changes all done for Switch, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X games.

For the first time since I started, we couldn't sell PlayStation 5's because of a console shortage but because we couldn't complete the mandatory bundle with it. We only had pink controllers, which no costumer was ecstatic about. One of them even asked me if it was 'too girly'.

My good sir. I had a third grade male classmate who'd rather have this controller than the white one.

We did manage to get more controllers by searching through the endless distro package list and the scanning the labels on the 15+ boxes in the backroom.

I did get to tell a coworker about a new customer story.

On the 31st, Halloween, I was closing the store at 6pm. Because of the holiday, we were closing about two hours earlier than we usually do. I was waiting for my grandparents to pick me up and figured they'd be right outside or try to call me to let me know they were here.

So when I noticed someone outside the glass windows, through the metal gates, I wasn't surprised. I just focused on my work so I could get out as fast as I could. When I heard a masculine voice say "I'm just going to call them", I wasn't surprised.

The store phone rang and because my grandparents don't use their cellphone often, I don't have their number memorized. I answered the phone, gave the mandatory spiel, but then paused.

No, it wasn't my grandparents outside but rather an angry customer. At this time, my grandfather had arrived and came to the store front to let the customer know that there were witnesses. The customer wanted me to let them inside so they could use their monthly $5 membership coupon.

The store had closed 25 minutes ago and I politely told the customer that, no, he could not come in but he could always use the coupon online. I also tried to explain to him that the store had closed early due to the holiday. He insisted that it was not a holiday, that if I didn't let him in that he would lose the coupon, but thankfully he left without too much trouble.

My grandfather did let me know he was outside because I did not feel safe enough to leave.

Believe it or not, that same customer, who because of this incident I will refer to now as 'Phoney', came back the next day. Phoney ended up buying a PS4 game and wanted to know if the Store Leader (my boss) or corporate had changed the hours. He took the answer I gave which was 'I'm afraid it doesn't matter' and informed him it had been a holiday. He did not agree. I am not sure if someone gave him raisins one time or if he never got a full sized candy bar, but Halloween is a holiday. May not be a federal holiday, but it is still a holiday.

I reminded him many places close early so children can trick-or-treat and their parents can be with them. He left without another word and I took a moment to wrap my mind around the fact a grown man became angry over a $5 coupon.

I mean, he spent the entire time he waited in line huffing, sighing, and making sure everyone who looked over knew he'd rather be anywhere else.

For a monthly $5 coupon.
