Researchers achieve >99% photoluminescence quantum yield in metal nanoclusters
A research team has achieved near-unity room-temperature photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) (>99%) in the near-infrared (NIR) emission of metal nanoclusters in solution. Their work is published in Science. Gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) as NIR-emissive materials hold potential in biomedical applications. However, the PLQY of Au NCs in the NIR region is typically low, often less than 10%. To address this problem, researchers synthesized Au22(tBuPhC≡C)18(Au22) and its copper-doped counterpart, Au16Cu6(tBuPhC≡C)18 (Au16Cu6), to study their photophysical properties. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that Au22 and Au16Cu6 share similar structures. Au22 showed an emission peak at 690 nm and Au16Cu6 at 720 nm. The absolute PLQY of Au22 and Au16Cu6 in air were 9% and 95%, respectively. In the deaerated solution, the PLQY of Au16Cu6 reached 100%, measured by both absolute and relative methods. Time-correlated single-photon counting measured the photoluminescence lifetimes of Au22 and Au16Cu6 to be 485 ns and 1.64 μs, respectively.

For example, latent fingermarks on paper can be detected by treating with the chemical 1,2-indanedione, which reacts with the amino acids present in the latent fingermark to give pink impressions, which are luminescent when illuminated with blue-green light (505 nm) and viewed through orange goggles (see figure 20.8).

Phosphorescence
What's the difference between phosphorescence and fluorescence? What makes one type of material better suited for glow-in-the-dark applications than another? Read more in the link below!
Phosphorescence is a type of photoluminescence in which a substance emits light after being exposed to light energy (electromagnetic radiation). Unlike fluorescence, which is usually short-lived, phosphorescence can continue to emit light for a period of time after the initial exposure. The excited electrons tend to decay at a much slower rate. This can be as quick as a few microseconds and as…

Reskate Studio’s new mural that glows in the dark
Harreman is the Reskate Studio project that for years has been bringing unique mural works to walls all over Europe, which only reveal themselves in the dark. The photoluminescent paint used by María López and Javier de Riba creates incredible images, capable of breaking up the urban landscape and thanks to its glow. The latest work presented by Reskate Studio is entitled “Eulalia” and depicts a girl immersed in water, with her torso – the only part visible during the day – to which a vase containing a plant is clutched. ‘Eulalia‘, created between 2022 and 2023, is painted in Mérida, a town in Extremadura (Spain), and is surrounded by white residential buildings.

Consider the humble photon?
Humility is no virtue! But yes, I agree photons are also quite cool. Easily #2, and honestly in contention for the #1 spot. The ways they interact with electrons make it difficult to evaluate one without the other

Researchers develop high-performance blue organic LEDs based on thermally activated delayed fluorescence material
Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have become a leading display technology. The luminescent material is a core component of OLEDs. Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials have emerged as promising emitters for achieving high-efficiency OLEDs. Blue TADF-OLEDs confront more pronounced efficiency roll-off and material degradation issues compared to their green and red counterparts, owing to the formation of high-energy excitons through bimolecular reactions of long-lived excited states. To pave the way for future TADF-OLED applications, it is crucial to develop advanced blue TADF molecules with extremely short exciton lifetimes, ideally in the nanosecond scale. Simultaneously achieving a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), ultrashort exciton lifetime, and suppressed concentration quenching in TADF materials is desirable yet challenging.

Kotick’s woggle which glows in the dark.
Well, since I've been experimenting with glow-in-the-dark filament and I like to make things functional, I've said "hey, why not make the Kotick's woggle, which is dedicated to risk prevention and emergency management, glow in the dark, so it can be used to signal in case the power goes out?". And here is the result.

Fluorescence
What makes some jellyfish glow? Read about fluorescence from the link below!
Fluorescence is a type of photoluminescence in which a substance absorbs light at a certain wavelength and then emits light at a longer wavelength, sometimes within the visible spectrum. This phenomenon is used in a wide range of applications, including biomedical imaging, chemical analysis, and materials science. One of the primary differentiating factors between fluorescence and other forms of…
