LMM gets a lot right when it comes to the way a kid's mind works and how events/relationships impact them. We can see that in Jane, who's struggling academically under the stress of the emotional abuse, her parentification, how she tries to sort out if her mother wanted/loved her, dreading spending the summer with her estranged father, feeling the blame of her parents' separation. But also in Phyllis, who lives in a stable home with two parents and is affluent. Phyllis spouts off the grown-up's gossip and excels in school, and the praise she receives fuels her to continue to act as the adults want her to.
I was just thinking today of how people like Shakespeare and Austen get called Geniuses for their writing, and while LMM does certainly get praise, it's usually with a little *for a children's writer addendum. But to be an adult who can look into the soul of a child and write their psychology is also a Genius level literary skill, even if it isn't looked at the same as those who write adult characters.

@sicktember Prompt 17 - Syncope/Fainting
Set during season 8
Julienne was trying desperately to listen to what it was that Nurse Anderson was saying, but it was becoming increasingly difficult. The height between each step seemed to be changing and even the furnace-like heat couldn’t explain the way the stairwell seemed to be rushing towards her. She’d been hanging onto the railing and counting down the floors since they’d started their descent but had lost track somewhere and wasn’t sure if they had six or sixteen floors left to go.
“I’m sorry,” she said, the words surprising her as much as the fact that she was suddenly sitting down, her legs folded awkwardly beneath her.

Welcome to Letters2fiction!
The concept here is to send in a question or a letter request, and you’ll get a response from your fictional character of choice, from the list below. Please stick to the list I’ve made, but of course, you can ask if there’s some other characters I write for, I don’t always remember all the shows, movies or books I’ve consumed over the years and I’m sure I’m missing a lot 😅

The latest photo from Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has confirmed the introduction of another new emotion that wasn’t seen in the previous trailers.
Shared by Pixar Post on X, the newest Inside Out 2 photo provides fans with the first look at the Nostalgia emotion, who is expected to appear in the highly-anticipated sequel in the form of a sweet elderly lady. This might potentially be the mystery character, who will be voiced by Oscar nominee June Squibb, whose casting was revealed last January. In addition, Inside Out 2 is also officially getting its own art book, offering fans a behind-the-scenes look at the sequel’s production. The Art of Inside Out 2 will launch on May 7, a month before the highly-anticipated sequel’s theatrical debut.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Inside Out 2 is directed by Kelsey Mann in his feature-length directorial debut. In a previous interview, Mann promised fans that the sequel won’t definitely disappoint, as it will have "everything we love at Pixar ... It’s got heart. It’s got emotion. It’s got humor." The ensemble cast includes returning cast members Amy Poehler as Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, and Lewis Black as Anger, Diane Lane as Mrs. Anderson and Kyle MacLachlan as Mr. Anderson. Joining them are franchise newcomers Tony Hale as Fear, Liza Lapira as Disgust, Maya Hawke as Anxiety, Ayo Edebiri as Envy, Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui, Paul Walter Hauser as Embarrassment, Kensington Tallman as Riley, Lilimar as Riley’s new friend Val and more.
Written by scribes Meg LeFauve, Dave Holstein and Jon Zack, the official synopsis for Inside Out 2 reads, "The sequel returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone."
Anxiety Takes Control of Riley’s Feelings
As seen in the official Inside Out 2 trailer, Hawke’s new character Anxiety will become the main antagonist for the sequel, as she sends Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust away from the Headquarters in order to take full control of Riley’s emotions. In a previous interview, Mann teased Anxiety’s significant role in the sequel’s story. "I’m especially excited about Anxiety …" he said. "There are a lot of different types of anxiety, but we’re really leaning into social anxiety, wanting to fit in and be part of a group. Wondering, 'Am I good enough?'"
Inside Out 2 arrives in theaters on June 14.

November 2023 Books
To Nowhere and Back by Margaret J. Anderson
Short time-slip story. Bit of an odd ending, but I enjoyed it.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins (reread)
Reread in anticipation of the film, which I'm going to have to wait to see.
Between Floors by W. R. Gingell
Slowly making my way through this series. The character interactions in this one grabbed my attention, and I'm looking forward to the next installment whenever I can manage to get it.
84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff
Read for a book club that I'm sort of in. This was the first assigned book that I've actually wanted to bother with in quite a while, and then I wasn't able to join the discussion (no voice from a cold). Even so, I don't know what I would have said. I liked the book well enough but don't have any particular strong feelings about it. I guess I was expecting something a lot...more in-depth?
Giant Pumpkin Suite by Melanie Heuiser Hill
An extremely dedicated and single-minded young cellist has an accident that forces her life to take a different direction and finds growth and healing in helping her brother raise a giant pumpkin, a project that will bring them closer to their entire neighborhood. I enjoyed this a lot.
The Faces of Fear by Monica Hughes
This is an aggressively 1990s book with some rather dated perspectives, but I enjoyed the premise of the protagonist developing a friendship with someone she's never met through a VR game they're playing together, which has been designed to prey on their specific fears.
Sandwriter by Monica Hughes
I'd need to reread this one for it to sink in fully, but the worldbuilding and characterization were enjoyable, and I'd like to read the next book.
The Shadows of Rookhaven by Pádraig Kenny
Not as emotionally affective as the first book but nonetheless good. Although it had been long enough since I had read the earlier installment that I had forgotten names, and it was a bit difficult to get reoriented since the narrative expects you to remember everything right off the bat.
Tin by Pádraig Kenny
Beautiful. Moving. I never expected to get so invested in mechanical characters.
The Supergirls: Fashion, Feminism, Fantasy, and the History of Comic Book Heroines by Mike Madrid
If you're going to discuss female characters in comics, maybe don't devote a significant portion of the book to overly detailed, purple-prosey descriptions of objectifying costumes or use derogatory terms to describe real or fictional women. Madrid claims to feel a connection with female superheroes but seems most interested in them for objectification while presenting his views as empowering/exalting them. Also way too many contrived comparisons to things in music history.
The Cloud Forest by Joan North
Some interesting characterization but too mystical (if that's the word I'm looking for) for my taste.
The Hideaway Summer by Beverly Hollett Renner
Such a delightfully middle-grade premise of young siblings who end up spending their summer living on their own in a vacation house near the woods and their domestic adventures. A lot of fun.
The Dark House of the Sea Witch by Joan C. Robinson
Slighter than Robinson's other books which I've read, but a well-written read.
Moonbranches by Anne Rundle
Fantastically Gothic atmosphere, but a weird, weird ending. I don't know how to feel about this one.
Mystery on the Isle of Skye by Phyllis A. Whitney
More of a travelogue/informational guide to the Isle of Skye than an actual story or mystery. Which doesn't make it bad, but I was less invested in it compared to other books I've read by this author.
Secret of the Stone Face by Phyllis A. Whitney
Standard Whitney mystery, not one of the more memorable ones for me.
Comics
The Ray 1994
The miniseries that preceded this ongoing series had a fascinating premise but not so much emphasis on characterization, so I was delighted to find that that changed with the 1994 series, which has a different author. Lots of shenanigans, to be sure, but we also get Ray's difficulties adjusting to adulting in the real world after living in lightless isolation for eighteen years, his doubts and insecurities and bouts of depression, and most of all, his complicated relationship with his father, the legacy he's been forced into, and his potential to become more like his father than he's willing to recognize. The Terrills have a fascinatingly complex and dysfunctional dynamic that provides a lot to analyze, and I'll be thinking about this series for a long time.
there is so much drama here that is being slept on, where are the Rayfam fics?

end of year reading 2023
classics:
norwegian wood by murakami (i was on vacation, my phone was dying and i only had this book)
secret garden by burnett (our library copy has a missing page so i had to go to gutenburg.org to finish)
daddy-long-legs by webster (only to cross off the “letters” category in my reading bingo; i also considered this “(not so) dark academia”)
manga:
usotoki rhetoric by ritsu miyako (period mystery; couldn’t get enough)
daddy, the beard gorilla and i by koike sadaji (bittersweet slice of life about a widower and his kid moving in with his younger brother)
series:
elemental logic by laurie j. marks (hurts so good; some ugly crying but could not get enough of it and i love the glyphs)
haley and nana stories by maggie hogarth (cozy and cute litrpg with calligraphy but found myself arguing against the religious views)
fave library discoveries:
linnea at monet’s garden by bjork and anderson (children’s book with gorgeous illustrations; counted this and sequels as my “cottagecore” reads)
a month in siena by hisham matar (wonderfully written about art and author’s grief for his father)
chord by rick barot (amazing poetry by filipino-american queer author; enjoyed it more than his galleon book)
other people’s recs:
one long river of song by brian doyle (savoured the heck out of this essay/poetry collection; reccd by austin kleon)
kamogawa food detectives by hisashi kashiwai (loved the japanese drama so I didn’t need the rec; saw it on ig and immediately got a copy)
at the amberleaf fair by phyllis ann karr (jo walton rec; i discovered a lot of older sff via walton’s blog at tor)
new release:
salvage right by lee and miller (i am obsessed with the liaden books)
other memorable reads: t. kingfisher’s minor mage and wizard’s defensive guide to baking and dorothy gilman’s clairvoyant countess picked up on sale at work.
I enjoyed the reading bingo so much I made another one for next year with old & new categories and added a 3x3 mini movie bingo as well.
I read about 126 this year aiming for at least one more, but next year, I’m lowering my goal to 75 to ease the pressure.

Elizabeth Hendon MacRae (February 22, 1936 – May 27, 2024) Film and television actress who performed in dozens of television series and in nine feature films, working predominantly in productions released between 1958 and the late 1980s. Among her more widely recognized roles was her recurring character as Lou-Ann Poovie on the sitcom Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., which was originally broadcast from 1964 to 1969
In 1959 MacRae was cast in her first television role, playing a witness in the courtroom series The Verdict Is Yours. Over the next several years, MacRae began to perform increasingly in more substantive, credited roles in televised dramas and sitcoms, ultimately appearing in a wide variety of popular weekly series, most of which are productions from the 1960s and 1970s. Some of the programs from that period include 77 Sunset Strip; Hawaiian Eye; Surfside 6; Harrigan and Son; Burke's Law; Dr. Kildare; The Andy Griffith Show; The Untouchables; Death Valley Days; Rawhide; General Hospital; Gunsmoke (in a short recurring role as “April”); The Fugitive; Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.; I Dream of Jeannie; The Virginian; Rhoda; Barnaby Jones; Kojak; Mannix; and Petrocelli.
MacRae continued to perform on television through the 1980s, but by then in parts almost exclusively on other daytime soap operas, such as All My Children (1980), Guiding Light (1983), and Another World (1980, 1989).
During MacRae's many years working on television, there are six series in which she performed in three or more episodes. She was cast as different characters in four episodes of the adventure crime drama Route 66 and in three episodes of Surfside 6, another crime drama about a Miami-based detective agency.
MacRae was also cast multiple times on the long-running Gunsmoke, appearing once in the role of Fanny in the 1962 episode "Half-Straight" and then, between 1962 and 1965, appearing four times as April, the girlfriend of Festus Haggen, one of the series' main characters. MacRae performed too in numerous installments of two daytime soap operas: as two characters–Barbara Randolph and Phyllis Anderson–over 13 episodes of Days of Our Lives in 1976 and 1977 and as Jozie in 11 episodes on Search for Tomorrow in 1985. In her television career, however, MacRae gained her widest recognition among audiences for her performances as a recurring character on the 1960s sitcom Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. (Wikipedia)
