Almine Rech New York is pleased to present an exhibition of tapestries by Phyllis Stephens. This is Stephens' first solo exhibition with the gallery... The exhibition will be on view from January 12 to February 25, 2023.

When creating a new series, I always do research; in hopes of gaining more insight in the realm of ideas I want to dive into. In researching the art of dance, a statement describing dance strongly resonated with me.

“dance is The Movement of Material”

... its an emotional and spiritual experience; a feeling all unto itself; a passionate artistic endeavor.

My first thought was, “Dance and quilt-making are exactly the same”. As I continued my research into the art of dance, I became more convinced that quilt-making and dance share the same artistic space. The phases of dance are distinctly similar to those of quilt-making.

“The choreographic process may be divided for analytical purposes (the divisions are never distinct in practice) in three phases: gathering together the movement of material, developing movements into dance phrases, and creating the final structure of the work.”

Wow, this is the perfect definition for the phases of Quilt-making!

The art of dance is the most emotional. Dance is the physical appearance of the soul. Dance translates a feeling into movement. Dance provides a level of freedom.

Quilt-making transforms fabric into movement. The movement stirs the soul and allows you to feel the story being told by the imagery. I believe each quilt in this series has captured the Art of Dance in a bold new way.

Occasionally I have the opportunity to have a fabric designer/houses design specifically [sic] me. . The background - is designed by watercolorist and fabric artist Denise Burkitt. Denise lives in Australia and had promised if I came to visit, she would create a fabric with and for me. About three years ago, I travelled to Australia, and as promised we created a few pieces of fabric together. The background in “I Will Change the World” is one of those fabrics. . However, what I am truly proud of are the other cottons in this quilt. They are from Latifah Saafir Studios | @latifahsaafirstudios, a small black female owned fabric house; which I am honored to do business with. The series “Naturally Beautiful”; is one of those series created from pure passion. I could not rest, I simply needed to tell this story. . I was away and got a frantic call from my friend’s daughter. She was crying, and said “Miss Phyllis is my Mom with you?” No, I’m out of the country; what’s wrong? I could hardly understand her; she said “I have a new boss, and he’s giving me two weeks to change my hair. He said it was too unprofessional for our clients. I have been on this job five months, no one has ever, spoken to me about my hair. Miss Phyllis, I always pull my locks back and put them in a bun. I always make sure my hair is neat and professional looking.” . I could not believe what I was hearing from this amazing young lady, whom I’ve known since she was two or three. It was only months earlier, I had watched her walk across the stage, graduating from Brown University, in Rhode Island. Graduating in the top ten percent of her class. . What she said took my breathe away; but somehow I pulled up enough air to say “Don’t worry everything is going to be alright”… . My heart felt like it was going to burst, as I thought, They Don’t Get Too Determine Our Beauty!!! To make this very long story short, I wanted to create quilts with #NaturallyBeautiful #BlackWomen.
