Manual therapy is a hands-on approach to mobilizing and manipulating the shoulder joint and surrounding tissues. This can help alleviate discomfort, increase range of motion, and improve overall function. Techniques might include:
Joint Mobilizations: Gentle exercises can help enhance joint flexibility and minimize stiffness.
Soft Tissue Mobilization: Massage and other procedures for relaxing stiff muscles and increasing blood flow.
Trigger Point Therapy: Putting pressure on precise places to reduce muscular tension and discomfort.
2. Exercise Therapy
Physiotherapy for shoulder discomfort relies heavily on exercise. Tailored exercises can help to strengthen the muscles surrounding the shoulder, improve flexibility, and increase stability. Key exercises include:
Range of Motion Exercises: Gentle exercises to increase shoulder mobility.
Strengthening Exercises: Targeted exercises to increase muscular strength and support the shoulder.
Stabilization Exercises: Exercises designed to improve shoulder stability and coordination.
3. Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy uses electrical impulses to stimulate muscles and nerves, providing pain relief and promoting healing. Common electrotherapy techniques include:
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS): Electrical impulses that diminish pain signals to the brain.
Ultrasound Therapy: High-frequency sound waves can help decrease inflammation and enhance tissue repair.
Interferential Therapy: Low-frequency electrical currents are used to reduce pain and promote healing.
4. Heat and Cold Therapy
Applying heat or ice to the shoulder might help relieve discomfort and inflammation. Heat therapy relaxes the muscles and increases blood flow, whilst cold therapy numbs the region and minimizes swelling. Our physiotherapists will prescribe the best therapy for your unique issue.

in connection to the previous post about simon/price’s dynamics; do kyle and johnny have similar dichotomies w their loves ?
i love the surge in SoapGaz because we really get to see how insane these two really are together lmao but yeah. charm and obsession is kinda how i see them.
both are intense, bold. their attention makes you feel like a bug under a microscope, but not at first. when it first happens, it's a spotlight. red carpet. dizzying. who wouldn't go a little insane having such an intense, gorgeous man lazer all his focus on them? and the way they do it is fan-ish. an unfathomable concept to wrap your head around until you have a man checking every single box you've ever had, raising the bar to an unreachable height as they shower you with unparalleled attention.
but the problem is, you don't see all the red flags because their personalities blind you to it. a little bit like a tsunami. you don't see the wall looming in front of you when the water recedes because you're too busy staring at the pretty seashells they uncovered for you.
with them, it's all charm, manipulation, and an unhinged obsession to the point where they're not content to simply be with you. they need you rooted so deeply to them that you just can't be without them.
Gaz slowly, steadily breaks down every wall you've ever had and rebuilds it around the two of you. locking you inside. sealing the exit. and you let him. because why wouldn't you?
Gaz is mature. a rock. he's someone who immediately feels untouchable; a phantom in a dream you can't ever seem to catch. but when you finally get him, it's almost fantastical. he's solid. steady. takes everything single thing you throw at him and tidies it up for you. ailments, illnesses. quirks. nothing seems to phase him. there's not a single thing you could try and leverage against him to see if he'll leave because he has an answer to it all. he doesn't mind going to physiotherapy with you. he reminds you to take your pills. gentles you into submission. peels back the layers slowly and examines every single part of you until nothing is without his fingerprints.
Gaz leaves you yearning. there's nothing else after him. no one else.
(and if you happen to slip away, he makes sure of it. stalks you, the people you date. threatens them with a flash of his canines and eyes that look far more wolfish than they should. isolates you slowly. methodically. narrows your world down to just him and ensures you'll come crawling back.
what else is out there for you when he's the Perfect Man? just ignore the stench coming from the closet.)
Soap is tumultuous. a whirlwind. the sirens wail warning you of a tornado but he's already ripped your house apart by the time you hear it. his attention is undivided. blistering. he's too handsome for his own good. too sweet, too. lures you in with roguish charm and devoted from day one. if you met on a dating app, he's deleting it before the first conversation is over. doesn't need it anymore, he says. he found the one. with Soap, it's the most intense relationship you've ever been in. a nonstop marathon of everything: conversations, future plans, sex. he dotes on you, but doesn't treat you like you're made of glass. showers you in affection, attention. makes you feel wanted in every conceivable way.
without him around, you feel dazed. confused. waking up on the beach after falling asleep under the sun. a little sunburn and sick.
and that's how you stay without him. a sigh of relief, at first. the silence is blissful. but then you hit a wall. you stagnant. he's the human version of a serotonin hit and the moment he leaves, you're left feeling empty. sucked dry.
it just makes sense to go back.
they pull you in, strip you bare. wrap themselves around your neck like a boa constrictor but where Soap takes a bite right away and then breaks you down, Gaz plays the long game of slowly coiling around you until it's too late.

Hi, soooo I'm currently studying phisiotherapy AND at the same time I'm sucker for good cuddling and soft scenes AND I have hate love relationship with scars (visually I think they can be attractive but in a lot of other aspects they just suck). Anyway so u know how scar tissue is a bit** to work with and can cause a lot of problems like numbness in scared area, decrease in range of movement, phantom pains etc. What I'm trying to say is Neil needs A LOT of therapy sessions which should contain some salves manual work with scars and maybe needle therapy which is just prettier way to say sticking hundreds of tiny needles right thru scared tissue which most definitely will hurt BUT what if during all of this they only will learn more about themselves and will have excuse to spend long hours together away from prying eyes and most importantly being soft, clingy, touch starved wholesome dumbasses with one shared braincell?
Sorry for long, boring and probably unnecessary not so much question or message as just my thought vomit I just wanted to share.
Have a great day🫡😅🧡
WHAT DO YOU MEAN BORING AND UNNECESSARY I LOVE IT
omg thank you for bringing your expertise into this, I absolutely wrote the “long hours being touch starved wholesome dumbasses” bit into my notebook lmao. Yeah! This is good!! I’m SUCH a sucker for soft moments like this I’m right there with you. I was bouncing ideas with @paradoxolotl on it and I love the idea of Day being very methodical, he might know some of this stuff already and then he goes out of his way to learn everything he needs to know to make sure Abram can still be taken care of when he won’t let anyone else touch him. Still talking him through everything. Andrew would be as careful as we all know he can be, he never takes for granted the trust Abram has when he allows Andrew to give him more painful massages/therapy, and after, Andrew’s touch softens and neither of them ever mention that he’d already finished the actual exercise/massage a few long minutes ago… idk anything about physiotherapy so I bet there’s lots of great art/story fodder here that I’m just unaware of so if you have any specific ideas I’d love to hear them 👀👀 but here’s what I did draw, hopefully it’s not too completely incorrect 😅

(Shout out to @anon-lemon for making me realize I needed to draw Andrew with his hair down 💕)
Anyway thank you for the ask, together we can make this both incredibly angsty AND incredibly fluffy 😌🥰

actually im making a second, slightly related post about how healthcare professionals expect you to have the knowledge and language to convey to them what's wrong, and rarely go out of their way to ask relevant questions about the problem you're having
the fact that I've had any success in navigating the healthcare system is only a small part because my doctor is cool. most of it is because i got sick of people shrugging at me and sending me along, while barely spending time to ask me anything more than basic questions, so i went and fucking did it myself. and then when i came back armed with the knowledge of what's going wrong, i was fortunate to have people who saw my competence (coughcoughbecauseimmasculinecoughcough) in taking charge of my own treatment, and let me do what i want
not everyone has that privilege, and certainly not everyone has the time or ability to spend hours researching their body issues and then essentially come up with their own treatment plan. and god forbid if i didn't have access to the internet where I'm able to get this information in the first place? like yeah, i refused to fall through the cracks, but at least some people were willing to toss me some climbing gear, and actually believed in my ability to crawl out
like this stuff isn't rocket science. it took me a year and a half of self-teaching to reach a point where i can probably do what most physiotherapists do, better than them, and with treatment methods more comprehensive than "just stretch the ouchy"
part of me wants to go to school for physiotherapy just to find out if the teaching methods are failing or if the people who become physiotherapists just kinda suck or if healthcare simply does not know what to do with chronically ill people

I don't know if you accept requests like thus, but could I ask for hange hcs or aot hcs as a regular students? I would like to know their routine and hobbies!
Hello how are youu?
Yes of course, our ask box is open, all requests are welcome. I’m just going to assume these are uni students you are asking for :)
Note: I am British so the uni content is based off what I know takes place in England.
AOT Characters As Students
Tumblr media
eren yeager - that student who either sleeps in the back of the class or doesn’t attend at all yet surprisingly he gets decent marks. He is very nonchalant about everything related to studying. His revision method is procrastinate then cram it all in the night before the exam. I can see him studying something like marketing as a major. This man will never stay on campus longer than he needs to. The second the lecture is done he just disappears.
mikasa ackerman - she is the quiet student who gets along with everyone and generally gets good marks. Will tutor others and shares notes to the people who are not in. Will sign you in to the lecture when you ditch the lecture. Somehow she manages to juggle uni and two part time jobs AND still have time to hang out. I can see her studying physiotherapy.
armin arlert - we all know this boy is a little nerd. He lives in the library and self studies other majors whilst studying his own of criminology. He takes his studies very seriously and is a well known top student. Is there every lecture right at the front with his two iPads, not to show off but because he actually uses both at the same time. Out of everyone Armin has the most extracurricular activities, he tutors and works part time, he also volunteers during the holidays.
jean kirstein - he is a mix of Eren and Armin. Sometimes he’s the slob at the back of the class and sometimes he’s the nerd at the front. His whole year just fluctuates up and down. But overall he gets good marks and that’s enough for him. He definitely thinks highly of himself because he studies law but he has Connie and Sasha to bring him back down to Earth. He is on the football team and the baseball team. He’s known as the guy who slide tackled into the goal post and Connie will never let him live it down.
sasha braus - that student who eats in the back of the class and brings the most outrageous meals to try and eat sneakily. She has a whole vlog where she has mukbangs during her lectures. Somehow never gets caught and is always praised for being a good student by the clueless professor. Despite all the snacking, she is a decent student and does try her best to complete assignments and contributes to the workshops. She may act dense but she is quite capable of both working and studying well. Definitely no extras for her, she needs her rest.
connie springer - he is the class clown hands down and all the joking around shows on his results. Sometimes he can’t even scrape a pass but at the end of the year, by some miracle, he passes and celebrates like he was given student of the year. Plays for the basketball team despite his height issues. Let’s face it, he’s there for the parties not the studying so imagine the shock when he found our civil engineering was not as easy as he thought.
erwin smith - the student who always always asks a shit ton of questions and confuses everyone who thought they understood. Takes his role as top student to heart and will compete against everyone. He will flip out if he doesn’t get the highest marks. Submits his assignments in the next day because he’s a fucking swot like that. He tutors but most of his students are scared of him and he revels in that. Is a control freak and knows it. His rich businessman’s son vibes fits well with his accounting and finance major.
hange zoe - that student who barges into the lecture room late and with majority of the items of their room. Smart af but the cooky-ness and general weird behaviour overshadows it. Hange is that student who will be extra and bring in a typewriter or find the craziest topics to do their assignments on. Loves the idea of studying what was and how it came to be so picked anthropology to major in. Has their hands in every extra club ever. Always, always runs everywhere, I don’t think hange knows what walking even is!
levi ackerman - the grumpy lone wolf student who HATES group work or any human interaction yet somehow is the most popular guy in uni. Even the first years can’t help but swoon at the sight of him. The fact he studies history just makes him even more attractive to everyone so he purposely goes out of his way to be unapproachable. He has his close friend, and I mean just one friend, and the rest are just extras in his life. Never joins in with anything fun or exciting and definitely no sports club but taekwondo does tickle his fancy.
- Kiki.

BPAT: breathing pattern assessment tool
COPD: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
DB: dysfunctional breathing
HVS: hyperventilation syndrome
POTS: postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome
Article summary
Abstract
Introduction
POTS is a chronic syndrome with complex symptoms of orthostatic intolerance. It is defined as an increase in heart rate of ≥ 30bpm in adults (≥40 bpm in children) within 10 minutes of standing with no orthostatic drop in blood pressure.
POTS is more common in women. Symptoms can be debilitating (impairment comparable to congestive heart failure and COPD) and include palpitations, light headedness/syncope, chest discomfort, breathlessness, neuropathic pain, chronic fatigue, poor sleep efficience, gastrointestinal symptoms, syncope, cognitive slowing, and psychological distress.
Breathlessness is a common symptom in POTS. Breathlessness is often attributed to changes in breathing pattern, frequency, and/or quality occuring alongside cardiac symptoms. Breathlessness can be episodic, triggered by physical activity, stressful thoughts and events.
Dysfunctional breathing (DB) is an umbrella term describing breathing disorders where chronic changes in breathing pattern result in breathlessness and other symptoms without respiratory or cardiac disease. The most studied form of DB is hyperventilation syndrome (HVS)
Boulding et al. (2016) suggest classifying dysfunctional breathing into the following: 1) Hyperventilation syndrome (a respiratory pattern associated with symptoms both related to respiratory alkalosis and independent of hypocapnia), 2) Periodic deep sighing (frequent sighing with an irregular breathing pattern), 3) Thoracis dominant breathing (a respiratory pattern occurring separate to somatic disease may be considered dysfunctional and results in dyspnoea), 4) Forced abdominal expiration (inappropriate and excessive use of abdominal muscle contraction to aid expiration), 5) Thoraco-abdominal asynchrony (a respiratory pattern in which there is delay between rib cage and abdominal contraction resulting in ineffective breathing movements)
Patients with POTS often undergo extensive investigations due to the complexity of potential comorbidities but there is no guidance or consensus on the assessment of breathlessness.
Methods
Retrospective study of POTS patients referred to repiratory physiotherapy
Respiratory physiotherapy outpatient's referral criteria: tests performed and identification of DB/HVS are explained
Physiotherapy assessment and outcome measures
A standardised physiotherapy assessment of symptoms was performed on all patients (details provided in the paper)
Physiotherapy intervention:
The physiotherapy intervention was standaradised in terms of education and breathing re-training exercises and was delivered by a consultant physiotherapist of a highly specialised respiratory physiotherapist. Each patient was assessed and treated by the same physiotherapist.
Physiotherapy treatment
The educational component focused on patient's understanding of respiratory physiology and the mind-body link
Breathing re-training intervention involved teaching breathing control (details provided). The breathing retraining exercises were standardised and progressive. All techniques used were standard respiratory physiotherapy techniques commonly applied for acute and chronic respiratory disease. Their use for breathlessness in POTS had no previously been assessed.
Patients were discharged when they were confident to continue the re-training programme independently or if they did not attend for follow-up appointments.
Data analysis: details and figures provided in the paper
Results
Demographic information is given in Table 1
Signficiant improvements were observed and are noted in Table 2
Discussion
This paper is the first to characterise DB/HVS and investigate the impact of physiotherapy in POTS. The results indicate that breathing retraining results in significant improvements in breathing pattern and symptom burden thus potentially improving their health related quality of life. Further studies are needed.
Significance of the findings
it is estimated that DB/HVS affects 10% of the general population and is more prevalent in women than men. Patients with POTS who reported respiratory symptoms had DB/HVS. DB/HVS may coexist alongside chronic respiratory diseases and COPDalthough the relationship is unclear.
Although there were statistically significant improvements for the patient cohort as a whole, not all patients had complete resolutions of their DB/HVS and there are several limitations in interpreting the results for this study.
Unexplained breathlessness or 'air hunger' are predominant symptoms of DB/HVS and can result in significant patient morbidity and an array of non-respiratory symptoms which can themselves provoke anxiety/panic and further breathing irregularity
Whilst orthostatic tachycardia is the main symptom of POTS, orthostasis causes a variety of other symptoms through a vaireity of different mechanisms. The paper provides an overview of the hypothesised mechanisms.
Psychological influences (stress, axniety, depression, etc.) are highly prevalent in POTS patients and predispose them to DB/HVS. The impact of this study's intervention could, therefore, be partly related to a change in anxiety thanks to education, greater understanding of DB/HVS, and empowerment.
Proposed improvements for further studies include the inclusion of pre-post PaCO2 measurements, the exclusion of asthma and pulmonary hypertension, analysis of why patients attended appointments (and addressing the issues)
Access to respiratory physiotherapy outpatient services is limited across the NHS and many POTS patients are instead seen by muscluloskeletal physiotherapists due to comorbidities. Increased awareness may improve treatment for these patients
More data is needed to investigate the prevalence of dysfunctional breathing in POTS and how it relateds to other chronic conditions. More detailed investigation and assessment guidelines and techniques are needed.
Limitations
No control data were available
Outcome measures were potentially not sensitive to non-hyperventilatory dysfunctional breathing
Observational nature and small sample size did not allow exploration of the role of confounding variables
A selection bias may have been introduced due to this being a convenience sample
The Nijmegen score used to characterise these patients has not been validated in this patient population. Its limitations highlight the need for a holistic POTS-specific measure.
Physiological outcome measures for the diagnosis of HVS are often limited to specialist services so alternative diagnostic tests are sought. The Breathing Pattern Assessment Tool (BPAT) has demonstrated good sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of DB in refractory asthma. Responsiveness of the BPAT to treatment remains to be ascertained.
Measuring Neural Respiratory Drive (NRD) in breathlessness patients with POTS may be advantageous. NRD provides a global measure of breathlessness and a physiological correlate to breathlessness but there is no data on whether NRD is increased in POTS or on NRD pre-post respiratory interventions
Conclusion

grounding skills
hello friends, today i thought i'd talk about grounding.
(when i talk about grounding, i'm talking about the self-help technique, not the witchcraft practice, though there are some similarities between them. i will make a post about grounding and centering in witchcraft another time.)
when we are stressed, one of the ways the brain can respond is to enter a state of dissociation. dissociation runs on a spectrum, and at the extreme end, it can be a highly distressing and frightening experience, and if this is something you can relate to, i would recommend reaching out to a licensed mental health professional for support. at the milder end of the spectrum, dissociation can feel like daydreaming, losing track of time, or a feeling of numbness or disconnection. sometimes this state of dissociation can feel safe and comforting, but at other times, it's confusing, frustrating or even frightening. to bring us back, we want to ground ourselves.
grounding is the act of reconnecting to our minds, bodies and the world around us. there are lots of methods to ground, and it takes time to discover what works best for you, but below is a list of techniques and tricks to help ground.
broadly speaking, grounding skills can be grouped into physical / sensory, mental / intellectual, and coregulatory. today, i'm mostly writing about physical and sensory methods of grounding. if you'd like to learn about other techniques, let me know and i can write another post! i hope you find this post helpful :-) - kira xo
sight: name and describe 5 things you can see. imagine you were writing a description of the object for a novel. study the objects, and get to know them. drawing from memory and then comparing is a more fun way to utilise your sight.
smell: smell is one of our strongest senses, so it's brilliant to utilise for grounding. i use citrusy scents to ground myself to the present day. peppermint and coffee are really good for this, too. it could be a certain perfume, or even something like detergent.
sound: here, we could think about putting on a video, audiobook or podcast, listening to a voice message from a friend, listening to music, or practicing being mindful and listening to the sounds around you. what do you hear? birdsong, traffic, a radio playing somewhere?
touch: there are two threads to this method; texture and temperature. i personally have a spiky rubber ball for physiotherapy that works brilliantly for texture, and holding ice cubes or a hot mug of tea (be careful not to burn yourself if you're feeling numb) can be really useful starting points for temperature.
taste: when feeling numb, taste can be useful to bring us back. as with smell, citrus, mint or coffee are all good tastes to try. chilies can be good too, as they can be an intense sensory experience. you could also try tastes that have a positive emotional tie, like a particular tea, or something sweet or comforting.
an anchoring object: for this, i use a rough-cut crystal that fits in the palm of my hand but isn't sharp. it's cool and has lots of texture, and i can grip it as firmly as i need to without causing any harm. for an anchor object, it's a good idea to choose something that reminds you of the present day, or of something comforting. this object can be used when you're feeling disconnected, to help remind you of when and where you are. any additional properties help
moving your body: movement helps to bring us out of a freeze response. you don't have to go for a run or start dancing - though these are both helpful and if you can, great! even subtle movements can help, and they may feel more manageable too. i like to start by stretching gently, and paying attention to where i'm tense or numb. you can shake out tension, drum up some energy with speed-walking, tap along to a comforting song, or just get up and make your bed. it all helps.
muscle relaxation: this is a way to physically ground yourself, and it helps with anxiety too. allow yourself to focus on just one part of your body - say, your jaw. tense it as much as you can, and hold that tension for a few seconds. then, slowly relax your jaw until it's completely loose. now, do this for your facial muscles. and now, your neck and shoulders. you can use this technique as a full-body grounding method, or just where you feel safe to do so.
anchoring yourself: i learned this technique in therapy actually! when you notice you're feeling disconnected and spacey, find a chair with arms. sit straight in the chair with your back gently pressing against the back of the chair. put your arms against the armrests, and gently hold onto them. if it helps, you can alternate gripping and releasing the armrests. now, plant your feet onto the ground, and visualise yourself taking root in the ground as you do. if you're anxious, it can help to practice some breathing techniques while you do this. i've found it to be a very helpful way of bringing yourself back down to earth.

it’s been so long since i’ve hung out here. i miss my anonymous friends, i hope u guys are well and thriving!
since this is still my writing blog, i figured i would write here about my writing and what i’m working on, and what i’m not working on.
i recently posted boy next door, which i am actually really in love with, and have completed 75% of, so for the first time ever i have SOME confidence in finishing it. i feel like it is the type of story that is so natural that there will never really be a perfect conclusion. But some meaningfully literary conclusion is plausible, lol, so i will attempt it. i am also really floored by the comments I’ve received. they’ve been really encouraging and kind, and some felt like I was being congratulated by a group of peers who have grown with me and seen changes in my writing style that i thought no one apart from me would ever notice or care about. in that way, fandom is kind of amazing because it feels like we are all in some sort of cohort together, and even in this vast space of chaos I have found some friends, and some kind souls who I can chat with in corridors, who peep in occasionally and see what I’m doing and encourage me positively in a personal manner. I am able to return this to others too. That’s pretty cool.
i had a tough situation with my health, or rather my inability to handle my health problems in an adult manner, but after many weeks of deleting social media apps and forceful grass-touching (extensive physiotherapy), i am trying to visit the online areas of my life again in moderate frequencies, because this is where I get to feel like a writer. I do not get to feel like a writer in my 40h a week IT consultancy job LOL. There are no artists for miles, unfortunately and it feels like I’m going insane sometimes, being around normies. (jk, maybe… not)
people have asked if i’m giving up on idily and i’m really not, the next chapter is just a tricky one, so it’s taking a while. We are now moving into a really plot-heavy part of the story, which is definitely new territory for me as far as my skills are concerned, so I’m doing a lot of writing ideas and staring at unmoving pages etc. It’s fine, I’m not despairing, as long as I’m still in love with the general story we’ll get somewhere. I will post chap 10 after I have written Chap 11 as well I’m thinking, so that I can be a bit more certain of how we’re moving with this story. Either way, expect rewrites and detail revisions bc I’m unreliable.
Darling - which is largely just a personal project that I envision in the shape of Ymir and Historia (and Rod Reiss) - will also resume. The way Darling gets updated is like so: it feels like a fever dream of craziness, all tinted red and then I get desperate and open my gdocs and blurt out some melodramatic shit. It’s an interesting process and maybe I can make it work bc the whole point is that the story is told through the form of “love letters” from an unreliable narrator. It’s fun, and kind of crazy, and I hope I can finish it this year.
as the life of a fic writer is constantly burdened by wips, i decided to try @/ betts’s method of triaging wips. (her writing advice is amazing, gospel). so realistically these are the three stories i will update this year (and hope foolishly to complete): Darling, IDILY & Boy Next Door. If I finish even one, I’m throwing a party fr. But I will try my best at all 3, regardless. Oh, and I’m participating in a KV Mini Bang (Trigun), so I will be posting an absolutely filthy one shot by the end of the year. But this means ALL other stories are either Rolled off to next year or abandoned. I will make another post about the specifics once I am done with the diagnosis part of the triage. But I feel kinda happy that I am limiting my scope to this for the year (it’s still a LOT, lol).
In terms of original writing: I have quite some ideas floating around… some have made it onto their own google docs, some are flowing via rewrites (bylb for example) and have made moderate progress, another is vaguely brewing in my mind in a way that makes me want to write a short story of it first and try to submit it somewhere first… or post it on ao3 lol, idk. but the idea is exciting: it is an indian sapphic love story which goes strong on the forbidden love themes (and infidelity). it’ll be the first time i’m writing something that is so close to my experience growing up, so i am curious to see how that turns out.
anyway, i’m going to try to do this more often, i.e, at least once more before the year ends :)
(if anyone is reading) see u next time!

Whumptober No. 17 HANGING BY A THREAT Breaking Point | Stress Positions | Reluctant Caretaker
Read it instead on AO3 or on FFN!
“Sir, may I remove—”
“Denied.”
Skywalker smirked. “Are you afraid that the moment I take these binders off I’ll garrotte you with them?”
Doctor Cohl sighed. Piett tried to ignore his disapproving look and continued stand sharply to attention in the corner of Skywalker’s cell, watching both his medic and his prisoner with a viciously trained eye. He also tried to ignore the fact that was exactly the image that had run through his head when he envisioned unbinding Skywalker.
“Good,” Cohl said gently as Skywalker completed the stretch he’d demonstrated. “Now try this one.”
Skywalker winced as he shifted but followed the instructions he was being given. The exercise mat that had been relocated to Skywalker’s cell—Piett had been against it; it was against regulation, since the prisoner could suffocate themselves to death with it if needed, robbing the Empire of their intelligence—held the indents of his knees even as he shifted to the new stretch. His hamstrings quivered, shoulders taut, at the effort of keeping that position.
Lord Vader had been most excited when he discovered that one of their onboard medics had originally trained as a physiotherapist. Skywalker had been kept on the Avenger, chained to the wall standing up in a cell too short for him, for days before he got there. His muscles had already started to show the beginnings of wear and tear.
“I can barely stand, Admiral,” Skywalker said. “My muscles have atrophied.”
He was useless to Lord Vader like this, Piett knew. Therefore, this physiotherapy was mandatory for him to recover. Skywalker was eerily calm about it all, considering how slippery he’d been in the past.
“It’s called resignation. And doing a deal—”
How Lord Vader intended to use Skywalker, Piett did not know, but it was not his place to question it. He was a terrorist. The methods that Captain Needa—no, Captain Gil; Piett kept forgetting that Needa had been executed for his abhorrent failure—had used were extreme but justified. If they had not been so rigorous in containing him, Skywalker would undoubtedly have escaped yet again.
Furthermore, he could understand the vengeful urge. He himself was not pleased that Vader had put aside such lavish quarters for Skywalker, to transfer him to once Lord Vader was back on the Executor and could supervise these physiotherapy sessions himself; it stank of bribery. They should not need to give an enemy of the Empire a single thing. He deserved nothing. But again, it was not his place to question it.
“Wow,” Skywalker said. “There’s a lot to unpack there.”
Piett ignored him.
“You’re right, though. The Empire doesn’t think it’s anyone’s place to question anything, does it?”
“It is certainly not yours,” Piett said primly.
Skywalker disrespected him, all his hard work, the Empire’s blood, sweat and tears, Lord Vader, and Emperor Palpatine himself when he snorted.
“Good.” Skywalker shifted to another position at Cohl’s instructions, letting his hands mould his body into the pose. When he let go, Skywalker held his position for several seconds, before collapsing onto the mat.
“Careful.” Cohl held out a hand to steady him. Skywalker’s hands were still bound behind him; he couldn’t steady himself in such a precarious stretch. “Admiral, I really must ask—”
“Denied. You may not remove his binders, doctor.”
“Having his arms behind his back for so long will only cause similar damage in his shoulders.”
“I am not concerned with damage. I am concerned with him escaping.”
“Sir, this is torture.”
Interrogation and persuasive techniques were necessary for the strength and maintenance of the Empire. But medics were usually too soft to understand that. Spines of steel, they certainly had, but they did not have the iron-hearted will to do what was necessary.
Skywalker snorted again. “And you do?”
“I don’t think torturing the prisoner further is what Lord Vader wanted, sir.”
“I will not take risks.”
Cohl swallowed. “Then let’s try another one,” he suggested. But when Skywalker tried to climb into the position, he shouted and grunted with pain.
Piett was a soldier, but he was a navy officer. He stood on the bridge and watched ships explode. It had been a long time since he heard someone scream right in front of him, until their lungs lost capacity, not cut off early by a destroyed comm and a fiery death.
He turned away. Closed his eyes. Skywalker curled up on the floor by the sudden strained pain, Cohl fussing over him indecently, as though he were a loyal Imperial. Piett grimaced in horror.
Skywalker got out through pained gasps, “When—was the last time—you watched an interrogation?”
Piett said nothing.
“Do you know what happens in them? Do you know what they put inside you? Do you know how they make you peel your own skin from your flesh, to get at the truths you’re hiding inside you?”
Skywalker had not been interrogated. No one had asked him questions or used the standard Imperial techniques on him; no one had dared. He knew nothing of what he spoke.
“I was tortured,” Skywalker got out. “So were my friends. They never even asked me any questions. But when they do ask you questions? I’ve seen my friends wake up screaming. Have you?”
Piett did not share a cabin with anyone. The Executor’s walls were thick. Of course he never heard anyone wake up screaming.
“Officer’s prerogative, huh? You never get your hands dirty.”
“How are you doing this?” Piett snapped. “Cease your unending violation.”
“Stop mentally quoting the army recruitment manual. It’s exhausting. I got enough of that when I tried applying for the academy.”
“Skywalker,” Cohl said. “You are shaking.”
Skywalker dutifully got up and let the medic guide him, support him, into the next one. But he still accused Piett, “We both know it’s full of shavit.”
“I know no such thing.”
“You do.” Skywalker smiled mirthlessly. “Ever heard Vader say, ‘your thoughts betray you’?”
Piett decided there and then that he hated Jedi. Skywalker was less obvious about this barbaric ability than Lord Vader, certainly, but that just made it more concerning. Lord Vader was loyal.
“You’d be surprised.”
Lord Vader, whenever he directly addressed Piett’s thoughts as if he had spoken them aloud, respected the Empire enough to meet him on his level. He did not use his otherworldly knowledge to destabilise the foundations of Piett’s life, his iron will, the cause of law and order he had dedicated his life to.
“You’re from the Outer Rim, like me,” Skywalker said. Piett hated the comparison. “You fought pirates. You don’t have the excuse of being raised in the Core, under this nonsense. So, what got you thinking like this? Are you that thoroughly brainwashed? Or just in too deep?”
“I am not the one who committed an act of terrorism as a teenager, Skywalker. The way you joined the Rebels suggests rapid radicalisation and brainwashing yourself.” When they used tactics like that, it was hopeless. The only way to handle that sort of evil was with an unyielding iron fist. What else were they supposed to do with bloodthirsty terrorists?
“You’re right.” Skywalker nodded. “That happens when the force of law and order murders your entire family in cold blood. You radicalised me.”
Piett gasped and closed his eyes. His pulse fluttered.
He heard Cohl murmur something, heard Skywalker shifting, heard this awful, overindulgent, horribly necessary treatment continue. It had been continuing for weeks. How long did it take to recover from torture? How long would Piett have to face this?
“Stop that,” Piett said sharply.
Cohl looked up. “Sir?”
Piett ignored him. “Skywalker, I am warning you—”
“What am I doing this time?”
“You can sense my thoughts,” Piett bit out. “Cease meddling with them. I had heard of Jedi mind tricks, but this—”
“I’m not touching you, Admiral.” Skywalker’s gaze, when he glanced up at him, was cool. “I’ve done nothing.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“Yeah. ‘Cause you know it’s the truth.” He shrugged, as best he could with his arms bound behind his back. Piett found his gaze tracing the awkward twitch of muscles, his wince of pain. “You only recite propaganda to yourself so hard because without it, it all comes tumbling down, doesn’t it? You know right from wrong. You ignore it.”
“Stop this!”
Skywalker turned away. “Sorry,” he said. He sounded apologetic, but his next words were sarcastic. “You’re right. I’m wrong. You’re a model Imperial with no conscience whatsoever who wholeheartedly believes in torture even if it’s right in front of your eyes.” He paused. “Where were you stationed when Alderaan mysteriously disappeared?”
“Unbind him,” Piett snapped, throwing his code cylinder at Cohl. Cohl fumbled, barely caught it, and unlocked the binders. Skywalker’s bravado vanished; he cried out from pain as his arms shifted, sagging back against the wall, but Piett had had enough. He grabbed his code cylinder back from Cohl. “I will send in another officer to supervise. I have many things to attend to.”
Skywalker’s gaze tracked him as he stormed out. It was insultingly pitying.
Piett was too disciplined to let himself sag against the wall when he left, but it was a near thing. He reached up to straighten his cap—regain the image of the unflappable admiral he fought so hard for—but it was a difficult thing. For all he spoke of his iron heart, his iron will, his iron fist, he knew he had none of them.
Skywalker was right. If he was a man made of iron, it was iron ore: less useful, brittle, disappointing, weak. He was riddled with impurities that no fire could burn away.
