Chapter 1: The Awakening

Everyone was gathered in the cabin of the solar yacht waiting for Lydia to come up from her dive with Euryale. Erin was smoking and looking thoughtfully towards Naples, which was just a few miles away. Meanwhile, Nella was gushing over Saldina who was working on Turning the Tide - a website meant to educate people and bring awareness about current environmental news and events around the world.

“What’s taking her so long?” Erin asked.

“She’s just checking out the grass and the groupers again,” Saldina chuckled.

“Or… that’s what she tells us,” Erin replied hesitantly.

“What else could she be–”

Just as Nella was about to finish speaking, Euryale popped out of the waters, beckoning everyone to come.

“What’s going on, Eury?” Erin asked.

“You won’t believe what we found!” he beamed.

Everyone went silent for a moment.

“Another mermaid?” Nella said as she looked around to see the other’s reactions. After a moment, everyone started laughing at the joke.

“I said what, not who,” Eury replied, slightly embarrassed.

“Well, don’t keep us waiting for much longer then!” Saldina prompted excitedly. At that moment, Lydia also surfaced with an enthusiastic smile.

“Everyone come,” she said as she started walking towards the cabin. As they gathered, Lydia opened her diary and started sketching. After a few minutes of silence, she placed it on the center of the table for everyone to see. It was a map of the gulf, and there was an X placed not too far from the boat’s location.

“We found a ruined building!” Lydia exclaimed.

“...Okay?” Saldina said, confused.

“There’s literally a whole Roman city in these waters. What’s so special about this particular building?” Erin asked.

“It’s not part of Baiae. Look how much further away it is. And Eury hasn’t seen it before either” Lydia responded.

“I’m confused. What are you implying?” Saldina shrugged.

“I’m just saying there’s a building where there shouldn’t be.” Lydia said as she pointed at the sketch again.

“Should we call someone?” Erin asked.

“Like who?” Lydia said, raising her eyebrows .

“Ooh! I know a girl!” Nella said excitedly. “She’s an archeologist so she should know what to do in this kind of situation.”

“So we’ll call her tomorrow.” Erin said.

“Why tomorrow?” Lydia asked, a little bit confused.

“Because it’s time to pack up and leave.” Erin responded as she pointed towards the horizon where the sun was starting to set. Lydia nodded and headed to the helm after saying goodbye to Euryale. The others said their goodbyes as well and prepared for the short journey to the docks.

Later that evening…

Nella and Saldina were preparing their dinner in their kitchen. It was a small kitchen, but filled to the brim with spices growing near the window, jars filled with honey and maple syrup on shelves above the counter, along with different utensils displayed on them. Some had plates painted in beautiful motifs of nature. Their fridge was covered in magnets and photos of their recent adventures. It’s been six months since the first time they met and their relationship had grown stronger ever since. Right now they were preparing crochette di tagliolini while faint music was coming from an old radio on top of the fridge.

“So… What do you think about today’s big event?” asked Saldina.

“I’m not sure what to make of it,” Nella responded while swaying to the rhythm of the music.

“Do you think it’s happening again?”

“I don’t know. I hoped we’d moved on from that,” said Nella as she dried her hands and leaned on the side of the counter.

“Me too. But we need to be prepared if something happens.”

“Nothing’s going to happen!” Nella pouted as Saldina embraced their girlfriend, giving her a little kiss on the temple, “It’s been four months! We’re living together, Erin, Lydia and Eury are doing great, and you’ve been growing your online presence. I just don’t want it to end.”

“Then why were you so excited earlier?” asked Saldina.

“Because tomorrow Emersyn will give it a quick look, confirm it’s part of the ruins and we’ll go back to normal.” Nella answered, before morphing into a cat and curling up on one of the chairs at the end of the room.

The next day…

Everyone was waiting in the cabin in anticipation of Emersyn’s arrival. Soon a speedboat appeared in the distance. Lydia stood up and walked to the edge of the yacht while the others waited inside. Just as she was closing in, Nella walked next to her so they could greet Emersyn together.

“Are you excited?” asked Lydia.

“Very!” replied Nella. 

A few moments later Emersyn joined everyone else on the yacht.

“Aah! It’s so exciting to see you again!” Nella beamed as she hugged Emersyn.

“Didn’t we talk about the bear hugs last time?” said Emersyn, annoyed, while trying not to fall off the yacht. 

“Yeah, of course. Sorry.”

“...It’s really nice to meet you, I’m Lydia,” the captain said as she introduced herself, “I can’t wait for you to see what we’ve found! It’s a ruined building, which shouldn’t be surprising given the area, but it’s not part of–”

“Let’s not jump to conclusions, alright?” Emersyn said, “I see you’re ready to dive so let’s go and take a look at what you’ve found, and then we’ll discuss whether it’s supposed to be here or not.”

“Uh...sure.” Lydia replied, a little surprised.

About an hour later both women returned from the sea and after a quick change of outfits everyone gathered again in the cabin, excited for what the archeologist had to say. A few moments later Emersyn came in with a cup of fresh coffee in hand, “From what I saw down there,” she started saying before taking a sip, “Nothing appears to be out of the ordinary. As Ms. Moretti pointed out, it’s a little further away than the rest of the ruins but it still appears to belong to Baiae. Of course,” another sip, “a lot more research will be needed to determine if that’s truly the case.”

“Are you sure?” asked Lydia, a little disappointed but relieved.

“As I said, more research will be needed but I’m confident in my initial assessment.” Emersyn replied, “Were you expecting it not to be?”

“No,” Lydia started replying, “But it’s kind of strange, don’t you think?”

“Not really,” answered Emersyn, amused, “What? Are you looking for the entrance to Narnia or something?”

“Wasn’t that in a wardrobe?” Erin said. 

The archeologist gave her a quick once-over before replying, “Anyway. There’s nothing ‘strange’ or unusual about this. Thanks for the coffee, and the find, but I think it’s time for everyone to continue with their day.”

“I agree,” said Nella.

While Emersyn was on her way to her speedboat, Euryale popped out of the water. Everyone on the yacht immediately jumped to their feet while the archeologist stared at the mermaid in utter disbelief.

“Is that… Are you a–”

“Lydia! Something's happening!” Eury shouted as the ground began shaking.

museums are my fave, and I’m a lesbian so we have 72-hour dates as quick hangouts, so if we’re dreaming big I’d love to go to Chicago or Boston or Philadelphia with my girl and spend a week and go to the major museums/sites and eat some really good food and just share those things together. but honestly, any time we spend together is amazing bc I’m with her, no matter how mundane 💖

all of them!!!!!! to receive, I love quality time above all else. to give, DEFINITELY gifts, but also words and acts of service, and touch especially bc I know it’s my gf’s fave to receive. honestly I think most people do enormously value all or most of the 5, they just might not recognize certain things as being examples of them. additionally, a lot of loving acts can also be categorized as more than one love language! picking up your partner’s favorite snack while you get stuff to make dinner that night is a gift and an act of service. a back rub is an act of service and physical touch. giving someone a pep talk during breakfast before they have a big job interview is words of affirmation and quality time, or giving the pep talk while driving them to the interview is also an act of service. love is so complex and so fascinating but truly it’s all there is, it’s all that matters

Monster, ice water if I’m being good (🙄), almost any kind of juice/lemonade/etc, and Faygo Red Pop

Why I started this account: So that I could have an entire blog dedicated to lovecore! I remember that I heard the phrase “heart shaped cookie” somewhere and I fell in love with it and immediately snagged the url and I think I had recently discovered lovecore around that time and had been reblogging lovey stuff to my normal aes blog. I don’t remember the timeline exactly but this blog is basically a way for me to claim that I try to keep my aesthetics organized ;)
