Today's Bat: Common Pipistrelle

Environmental Impact: I don't think I've ever met a less discerning bat. The range on these guys spreads across most of Europe, into Morocco, and even out to western Asia. They'll roost just about anywhere, changing location from nursery to nursery and season to season. Limestone caves, park trees, siding panels? Pipistrellus pipistrellus calls that free real estate. Interestingly, they do seem to form habits despite their widespread nature. Individuals will continually hunt in the same areas, especially around lakes, ponds, gardens, and parks. Additionally, their migratory range is a tight 100km (about 62 miles). If you hate mosquitoes and other common pest insects, you'll love this species' efficiency and indiscriminate nature.

Beauty: Just look at that little fella. Classic brown coat, dark wing membranes, and the sweetest little snoot you ever saw. If you don't love the Common Pipistrelle on looks alone, I'm afraid your condition is terminal.

Power: Aside from the classics (delayed fertilization, extreme adaptability), I learned something sweet about the Common Pipistrelle. Mating season is largely kept to autumn, during which time males will perform specific mating rituals for females. A beautiful song and swooping dance would certainly capture my heart!

Papua New Guinea is a biodiversity hotspot home to 95 species of bats that are increasingly threatened by fragmentation because of commercial logging and agricultural practices. The primary objective of this project was to enhance our comprehension of the ecology of various understudied bat species native to Papua New Guinea. Additionally, it aimed to shed light on the pivotal role these bats play in providing essential ecosystem services such as pollination, seed dispersal, and pest control within two designated conservation areas.

Such endeavors have the potential to significantly increase conservation efforts in this biodiversity hotspot, where scientific studies are scarce and the knowledge of species remains limited among the local communities residing in the towns and villages adjoining the two conservation areas.

Scientific name: Pipistrellus pipistrellus

The common pipistrelle is so small, it can fit into a matchbox! Despite its size, it can easily eat 3,000 insects a night: look for it flitting around the garden or a lit lamp post as it chases its prey.

Hi!! I really love this picture and it is very cute but unfortunately the identification seems incorrect, so small correction:

This bat is certainly a species of Pipistrellus

This is identifiable and differentiates from Nyctalus by the tragus (the little flesh projection on the base of the ear covering a small part of the front). Nyctalus has a bean-shaped tragus that is a lot wider than long. Pipistrelles have tragi longer than wide although still short compared to Myotis. Nyctalus ear structures are also rather wrinkly compared to pipistrelles. The snout is also not very broad like in noctules and rather narrow compared to Nyctalus leisleri. The ear skin’s connection to the mouth area also isn’t very visible. It may be hard to form the exact picture in mind from just a few descriptions but looking at image comparisons will certainly help. All of this combined tells us this is a pipistrelle.

I am not able to fully identify the exact pipistrelle this little bat is but if i had to guess it would be a common or soprano but we are not able to differentiate these well if we do not have a sonogram of the echolocation calls. Sometimes, the vein patterns in the plagiopatagium can tell us cues to which one it is but even that can be variable between the two. The darkened face suggests to me it may lean more to a common (Pipistrellus pipistrellus), but this is still variable within the species. If you can provide forearm measurements this can possibly also rule Pipistrellus nathusii in or out.

So i would confirm this is a bat in the genus Pipistrellus. Nevertheless, great picture of a wonderfully cute bat!!!

Bats are real bats confirmed

I’m bored and have to read literature but also too deep into the bat family fan diction to not see this sh*t when I’m reading it. Here you go, it has been scientifically confirmed that the bats are just horny little patrolling controlling little shits. Take this rambling with a grain of salt, my brain is melted.
