CHAPTER 5 >>> CHAPTER 6
Tumblr media
Trousers, oh you'd love to kiss the person who invented trousers. You can't climb a mast with heavy cotton skirts especially without anyone below getting a full look at what's under it. Not to mention how comfortable it is, granted it's technically not your trousers, it's a bit big on the waist so you have to use a rope and some type of knot that James taught you. The cotton shirt and lambskin vest makes you look like an honest to god pirate, you fit right in, if only you could get up on the perch without falling.
The wind is breezing by you as you find leverage with your foot on the iron footholds, your hands are clammy, eyes strained against the sun and wind. The height thrills you, reminding you of the time when you used to jump all-over roofs to escape coppers.
“Hurry up, gorgeous! I'm bleeding up here!” Yuri screams from the top, showing you her so-called injury on her palm. It's bleeding, yes but it definitely does not need any stitching.
You swear she's messing with you. Training you perhaps? But it wouldn't matter as you won't stay on the revenge for too long. According to Miles, land is close, a couple of days at most. You secretly hope it's more than two, you're liking your stay on Hobie's ship, dare you say you're quite fond of having the crew around. Minus all the rival pirates and navy ships attacking the revenge, maybe you'll love it more here if those events don't happen on a daily basis.
There's a sense of security on the ship or maybe you're just beginning to get used to the routine and you just don't want the routine to get derailed by leaving the ship.
Even with all the dangers of staying on a pirate ship, you'd like to stay a few more days on it.
Your mind flies back during the crew meeting a week ago while you're slowly making your way up towards the crow’s nest. You can still feel everyone's eyes on you but you've only got your eyes clocked on to Hobie's intense look, he's determined, lips curling into a smirk as he says your name in front of the crew.
“Lastly, we're gonna need scuttlebutt, she's the only person not known to the navy in the colony.” Hobie's voice tells the crew but his gaze stays on you.
“She'll be our distraction then?” Ned asks.
You suddenly feel sweaty in front of everyone's eyes.
“Aye, we've already discussed her part. She knows what she's gonna do.” He stares at you intently, addressing you only. “After that you can finally get back on land.” You nod, slowly. Hobie finally looks away from you, speaking to the crew.
“Everyone else just needs to follow her lead. This isn't your first heist, you all know how to work with each other, keep up with the plan and we'll get the documents we need.”
“Remember, distraction,” Gwen glances at you briefly, “no guns inside, we get in the governor's office, get the plans, we get in and we get out quick.” Gwen speaks up from Hobie's right, her tone is serious, the low lamps swaying in the ship's movement makes shadows dance on her face.
“After that a round in the tavern, right?!” Two-fingers shout from the corner, most of the crew cheers with him.
“If we do everything right.” To everyone's dismay, Hobie corrects the cheering crew.
Yuri faces Hobie with a stern look. “Then after that we get the bastard, we get our bloody revenge, and then we're done.” you feel the tension filling the cramped space. “We go back to what we used to do.” Hobie observes her quietly, “The sea is calling and we better fucking answer, am I right cap'n?”
Hobie inhales, you could only get a glimpse of his anger flash across his face. “Then we answer the call”
The sudden rhythmic stomping from the crew makes you jump, Pavitr turns to you, whispering close. “So you've already discussed it with the captain, huh?” he wiggles his brows.
“Really, Pav?”
He continues to wiggle his eyebrows that are weirdly flexible. “Is that all you've discussed? Orrrr” You roll your eyes.
“Pav?”
“Yeah?”
“Go jump overboard”
“If that will get you to stay then I will jump overboard.” He happily says, skipping away from you.
“Wait what—?”
Yuri reaches down, flexing her ringed fingers for you. “C’mon landlubber, I'll help you up before the wind takes you.” her voice brings you back to reality.
You take her hand, “Thanks, how did I do?”
“You climb like my old hamster. Very cute but not very fast.” Heaving you up, you finally reach the bird's nest.
The circular space is filled with random stuff hanging from the banisters. A sextant hangs on a ribbon on your right, an old telescope swings in the wind, hitting your shin. The basket of yarn sits by your feet, a pair of knitting needles lay next to it.
“Thanks?” you look around and the view takes your breath away, the sun shines brightly painting the open water in watercolor light. There's nothing but blue as far as your eyes could see, you've never felt tinier in your entire life.
Waves heading in different directions, seagulls circling above the ship, providing a chorus of unending squawking.
“You're welcome, pretty.” She sits down on a tiny stool, palm up. “Before I bleed out.”
You chuckle. “You're not gonna bleed out,” taking a bandage and ointment from your handy dandy trouser pocket, you squat in front of Yuri. “It's just a scratch, and here I thought pirates are all tough.”
“Am I a pirate? Haven't felt like it recently.”
You look up at her, pausing from treating her wound. “What do you mean by that? Of course you're a pirate.”
“You look like a pirate too, Y/N, but logically speaking, you're not one of us.”
“Touché” you continue to bandage her hand, there's a sudden weight in your chest. “And here I thought you're not a pirate?” You throw back her own words.
She laughs, the sound akin to tiny bells twinkling. “Oh I'm gonna miss you and your wit.”
You smile genuinely, “and my medical prowess too?”
“That and more, doc.”
“Yuri, can I ask you a question before I inevitably leave?”
She stretches her hand, trying out the bandages. “Finally!” You jump slightly. “And here I thought you would pass asking me all your incessant questions.”
“Am I that annoying?”
“Oh no you're not, don't worry, darling. We're just not used to having new comers, the last time we had one was a while ago. And that was Danny, bleh.”
“Great, and here I thought everyone hates it when I ask questions.”
“They do,” you blink, “but if they ever complain they get a stare down from Gwen so they let you be curious.”
You bite back a laugh.
Yuri crosses a leg over the other. “So what is your question? I'm dying to know.”
You clear your throat. “During the meeting–?”
“Ah that!” She leans on the railing, shoulders relaxed, face facing the sun as it bathes her in sunlight. “The whole revenge thing has put a stop to our usual…” Yuri thinks of an appropriate word. “Adventures, that's why I just want it done and over with. Three years chasing the king's flame is too long, don't you think?”
“The king's flame?” You try to recall his real name that you've read a few times in the newspaper. “Captain Mathias something something.”
“Oh he's something alright, got our captain's knickers in a bunch for three straight boring years.” She pauses to look at you through her eyelashes. “I hate the wanker as much as the crew but my god I just want to bring him down as soon as possible.”
Sighing, she squeezes the bridge of her nose. “The navy attack was a blessing in disguise I suppose, if not for the lieutenant singing we wouldn't get the information about his little travel directory.”
You nod. “You just want to go back to pirating, I get it now.”
She hums. “That's why I like you so much”
You look away embarrassed, clearing your throat, you continue. “About the whole revenge thing? Everyone dances around it every time I ask and—”
“Maybe you'll find out if you stay long enough.” She smiles, a genuine one without a hint of flirting. “We need you y’know.”
“I know but I've got my own path to follow.”
“Screw following your path!” She waves you away, clicking her tongue. You frown at her. “I know you're starting to like it here. Look, I'm not opposed to you staying, I haven't seen this crew this healthy in a loooong while. Not to mention, Hobie bounced back real quick after all the attacks. Morale is at an all time high.”
“Only because he had less to worry about, like the crew dying of infection and disease.” you scoff.
“No, it's the opposite, he has more to worry about.”
You quirk a brow questioningly.
“You're asking the wrong questions, doc.”
“And what questions should I ask then?”
“Why did the hellion flee? They clearly had us, they just had to sail to us, back up the smaller ship but they didn't, they stayed behind, watching.”
You blink slowly, contemplating. “This didn't come up during the meeting. Have you told Hobie?”
“Of course I have and he reacts the same way every time I express my concerns about his revenge plan.” She shakes her head. “Fuckin’ indifferent.”
“I can tell him, maybe he'll listen.”
Yuri gives you a look, a neat eyebrow raised, lips straight. “Please, he might actually throw you overboard this time. We've tried that, love, trust me nothing's holding him back. He'll only stop once he gets his hands on the captain and I don't think even death itself will stop him either.”
“What did the navy do to him to warrant that?”
“Y’know what,” she stands up, stretching her back. “Go back down to the deck, Hobie's been staring at us for a while and I think his iris is burned from staring too close to the sun for too long.”
Sure enough, you look down to see Hobie knocking on the wooden mast, the sound reverberates upwards. He looks tinier from up where you are.
“Come down here and make yourself useful!” his hands are cupped around his mouth, yelling out.
Staring back at Yuri, she busies herself with her knitting, crafting a dark blue scarf. She waves you off wordlessly, eyes trained on her craft.
You climb down carefully, making sure your foot has leverage and your hands properly holding onto the steel bars.
Your mind filters through more questions, why would the crew not just answer you directly? Why does everyone compare you to the mysterious MJ? What is up with Hobie and the navy—?
A strong gust of wind suddenly blows past. With your hands slipping off the metal, feet unhooking from the foothold, you fall. Barely letting out a sound, you close your eyes, bracing for impact.
But you don't land on the floor with a harsh splat, instead you feel strong arms enveloping you, a hand gripping onto your thighs tightly, fingers spread across your shoulder, holding and tender on your skin.
“Fuckin' hell!” You hear someone yell.
Cracking an eye open, you see Hobie's furrowed brows, chest heaving. After seeing you alright, his face morphs into the most smug look you've ever seen. His lips curling into a smirk, eyes crinkling in the corners, dimples in full display. With his eyes full of wordless teasing, he opens his mouth with confidence.
“Got you fallin’ for me now, hmm?” The sun shines behind him, giving him a heavenly halo above his head. You swear you want to punch it off his face.
Shoving yourself off his arms, he drops you unceremoniously, you land on your behind with an ‘oomph’. Hobie looks down at you with a growing smile, hands tucked in his pants, his casual shirt dances with the wind, giving you a full show of his exposed chest. You sneer at him, wanting to tug the strings on his shirt to close it and maybe strangle him with it.
“A thank you would be great” He snickers, “saved your life a few times now. We should have a board here that tallies it all down.”
You stand up, pretending to dust yourself off but in truth, your tailbone hurts. “I fell from six feet, I would've survived, thank you very much.”
“You are very welcome, scuttlebutt” you can't believe it but he still manages to irk you.
Sucking in your teeth, you exhale, letting out your frustrations through it lest you get thrown overboard by the captain himself.
“What do you want, Hobie?”
“It's captain to you.”
“Captain” you say with gritted teeth, eyes searing holes into his shirt.
“That's better, I need help with tying the sail down. The others are unfortunately busy”
You raise an eyebrow, “why don't you do it yourself?”
“The wind’s too strong, I need someone to hold the ropes.” Hobie points at the large flapping ropes tied around the main mast, it could take someone's eye out with how wild it's moving around.
“Fine”
You're practically hugging the entire mast, making sure the numerous ropes stay close to the wood, the hemp ropes slap you across the face while another gust of sea wind passes through you, fluttering your lashes. You're glad that you're wearing trousers instead of the usual long skirt.
Hobie wrangles the wild cords. You can't see him but based on all the groaning and frustrated grunts, the ropes seem to be winning.
“Alright, got this one tied—fuck!” You hear a slapping sound against cloth. Silently chuckling, you'd give anything to have seen that just now.
“Hand me the next one!” He yells atop the rushing wind. You blindly take a single rope, handing it to Hobie's side.
Waves crash on the side of the ship, rocking you back and forth. Good thing you're already holding on to something strong.
He grabs it, his hands grazing your palms. It's warm, warmer than you thought it would be, you feel his calluses and all the history around it.
This continues on until you're only holding onto one rope, you've practically memorized every indent and lines on his hands and palms. Hobie ties the last rope on the steel hooks, the muscles in his arms doing all the work, sweat drips on his chest, following it with your eyes. it's like seeing a carriage crash, you can't look away.
“Fuckin' hell” you fling your eyes away when you hear his tired voice, looking at anything else other than him.
You're glad no one's looking your way.
The wind whips your warm cheeks, incredibly thankful to mother nature, you look back at Hobie, avoiding his sweat covered chest.
“Last one, scuttlebutt.” He flexes his hand towards you, smiling brighter than the searing sun. Why was he so happy when he was attacked by hemp cables a few minutes ago?
Before you could give it to him, Hobie had a better idea. “Why don't you do this one? Learn how to properly tie a knot.”
“James already taught me”
He beams, “that's good then, go do it.” Moving aside, Hobie gives you ample space to tie the cord.
You begin to twist it around the hook, looping it around itself. Hobie sighs behind you, looking over your shoulder, he has his hands on his hips.
“Continue, let me see what he taught you, yeah?”
Going back to your knot, you recall James’ instructions, over and under, twist it around then tie it together. You're done, looking behind you, Hobie grins, nodding.
“Adequate.”
The pride in your chest dissipates. “Really?” You scoff out.
“Good, but not enough, here.” He walks towards you, standing so close to you that your elbows kiss his.
You smell sea salt and the distinctive wound ointment.
Hobie unties the last knot, “focus here,” he tethers it differently, practiced hands gliding along the rope. “Got it?”
“Y-yeah.”
He unties it again, handing it back to you. “Let me see then.”
You side eye him. “I saw it.”
“Prove it then” he smirks, leaning sideways on the mast, arms crossed on his chest.
You bind it together like he did, hands suddenly clammy, face full of concentration. “There?”
“Not quite. Let me?” He closes the small distance, hands gesturing towards the rope, you nod thinking he's about to show it to you again. Instead he takes your hands in his. Careful and gentle like a flower petal kissing your hands.
Hobie uses your own hands to tether the rope around the steel, your mind has never clouded this much but you're determined to listen this time or he might not leave your hands alone.
“D’you have it, scuttlebutt?”
You clear your throat before speaking. “Y-yeah”
He unknots it once again so you could do it yourself. Holding the rope makes you sweat more as his eyes observe you. You follow through, finally doing it perfectly, it's a bit wonky, leaning to the side but at least it's secure.
Hobie chuckles, clasping your shoulder briefly, not a second more. “Good job.”
You blink, “thanks”
He walks away, leaving you on the spot.
The revenge drops anchor further away than the main docks. You've arrived a day earlier than you thought. With your small bag of belongings, you grip it tightly in your hand. You haven't been this further south in your entire life. The air is humid and warm, the trees more scarce.
The anchor clinks against the chains, with one strong push of the large wheel by Finn, the metal comes tumbling down to the depths with a splash.
A ramp is brought down to the side of the ship, it bangs loudly on the asphalt. The crew rolls down barrels upon crates of things down as you watch on with a clenched jaw.
“You'll do great.” Gwen makes you jump in place, she looks at you apologetically. “Don't be nervous, I know you won't fuck up.”
“Thanks?”
She slaps your back, “No problem.”
“Ow” you rub at the small of your back.
One by one they walk off the ship, stretching their arms, some hoot and holler. The late afternoon sun doesn't help with your nervous sweats as you carefully make your way down the ramp.
Finally standing on solid ground, you wobble a bit on your feet, too used to the rhythmic rocking of the ship.
Hobie jumps off the ramp following after you, his boots thud against the ground, heavy leather coat scraping by his shoes. His usual hair is tied in a ponytail hidden under a tricorn hat.
“Is this supposed to be your disguise?” You question him.
He whirls around, smiling almost immediately. “You'll be surprised at how many people don't recognize me in this.”
“Sure–” A crowd of children saunters over to the crew. Your eyes widen at the sight, their faces unafraid, giggling amongst themselves. “Uhh?” You point.
Hobie twists around, bringing your hand down for you. “Calm down, they can smell fear.”
“W-what?” You hide behind Hobie's large coat.
“You're all a sight for sore eyes, eh?!” Hobie bends at the knees while the children greet him with smiles and high fives. Pav and the rest of the crew join in, laughing while some happily chat with them.
“Open the crates,” Hobie calls above the chatter. “Give them the supplies.” He holds a child by his feet, swinging him while more children gather around him, calling for Hobie to swing them around too.
You watch quietly as the crew gives the gaggle of children some food, blankets and coins.
“How's your mum?” You hear Hobie ask a brown haired child. She whispers to him timidly. “Yeah? That's good, give her this bag, tell her it's for medicine.” Hobie hands her a clinking bag, the girl nods, smiling at Hobie.
Your heart warms at the sight, Finn gives the children piggy back rides as he gives them bread that you helped bake. Gwen talks quietly with a silver haired boy, Miles fights off a handful of children as they poke his pockets for coins. Pavitr’s handing each child a fleece blanket, laughing as he covers their heads with it.
You can't believe your own eyes.
A brown eyed girl tugs at your jacket. Looking down, you smile politely at her. Kneeling down to her height, she gives you her best puppy dog eyes.
“I know you're good but give it back, please?” You say while you offer her your open hand.
Her facade breaks, rolling her eyes. “Fine.” she hands you back your coin pouch.
“Need more practice,” you chuckle, standing to your full height.
“Ugh, I know!” She skips off, heading towards Ned.
“That's Estelle, quite a pickpocket huh?” Hobie appears next to you, a couple of children clinging on to each of his legs.
“Yeah, caught her with my coins though.”
“She needs more practice”
You laugh, “that's exactly what I told her.”
Hobie smiles, there's a comfortable silence between you. Just watching everyone interact with the children, more people arrive on the dock, both children and adults alike. They smile and wave. Surprisingly, Hobie waves back with a bigger smile. The children on his legs run off to what looks like their parents. Your smile falters.
Something pokes your side, you look down, finding a book poking you.
“What's this?” you ask, taking the book from Hobie.
“Farewell gift, I figured I won't have the time to give it to you after we take the papers”
Reading the title, you giggle, a smile coming back to your lips.
“‘How to conquer your fears volume five: Learn how to swim by Sir Riordan of Canterbury’ of course it's this book. I can't believe it took him five volumes to write this one.”
“Thought you might need it on your adventures.” He turns to you fully, eyes roaming around your face.
You're about to thank him, despite everything that happened, he let you stay, if it was any other pirate ship you'd be dead. Before you could say your piece, Hobie holds out his hand for you to shake.
“Good luck, Scuttlebutt. I can't say you were a pleasure on board but I'm glad you're not navy” you take his hand, shaking it, he tugs you closer, whispering in your ear, his breath fanning across your cheek. Sea salt and leather captures your senses.
“I better see you later or I'll—’’
“Or you'll hunt me down, I know, follow the plan. I won't let them down.” You lean away, cheeks warm, hand still holding his. “I promise.”
His grey eyes swirl, smiling at you. “Good, you're learning.”
“Surviving” nodding, you don't back down from his stare. “I'm just surviving.” you clasp his hand tighter like a hidden threat before you let go.
A shot rings out. You scream bloody murder before running frantically out the dim alleyway, sprinting towards the guards guarding the manor. Your barebones shoes clack on the rocks, feeling the jagged edges through your soles, you keep running, calling for help. Frantic shadows dance around your peripheral, footsteps as quiet as the night.
Reaching the silver gates, you bang on the metal. “Guards!” You screech, a couple of young guards sprint towards you, muskets raised in your direction.
“Stop right there! This is private property!” One says, you can smell the ale on his mouth from where you're standing.
This will be easier than you thought. Hopefully.
You heave, playing the part of a damsel in distress. “It's my brother! He's been shot, please help him!” Taking the younger guard’s hands through the metal gate, you flutter your eyelashes. “Please.”
They look at eachother, muskets pointed away from you. You grip his gloved hand tighter for emphasis. Wordlessly, they converse, eyes flitting between you and the manor.
“Please I just need someone to carry him to the hospital.” You shakily take your coin pouch out, the contents clinking against each other. “I can pay,” your eyes water. “I can pay both of you.”
With a nod and a smirk from the older guard, they open the gate, promptly closing it behind them.
“Thank you! Oh thank you!” Leading them towards the alleyway, you speed walk back. “This way, hurry!”
They obediently follow you into the dark.
You step into the darkness, they look around the empty alleyway, “oi! Where's—?”
Yuri emerges from the darkness accompanied by Finn, their guns drawn pointing it right at the guards’ temple.
“Don't move,” Yuri says with a tilt of her head. “Or…you know what happens next.”
You look away before a metal hits flesh in a sickening thwack! They drop harshly on the ground, your cue to look back.
Finn drags the bodies further into the alleyway, away from any prying eyes. You step to the side, giving him space.
“Good job, have you ever thought of a career in theatre?” Yuri asks, sporting two new muskets strapped to her back.
You wipe your eyes free of unshed tears. “I'll think about it.”
“This is it then, landlubber? I really hope I see you again.” She holds your elbow, surprisingly, you don't flinch away.
You fondly smile at her, “Me too, Yuri but I think I'm still needed here.” Your trouser pocket clink as you tap it.
Meanwhile, Hobie and the trio sneak into the manor that's now left unguarded. They go around the large home, finding a servant's back door. Gwen jiggles the doorknob.
“It's locked.” She whispers, kneeling down, she takes a lockpick from her belt. Hobie and the others watch her back.
After numerous tries, the lock pick breaks. Gwen clicks her tongue, taking out another lockpick.
Seven lockpicks later, sweat dribbles on Gwen's neck, the door still sits locked. She looks at Hobie frustrated, brows knitted together.
“Hey!” You whisper shout. All four of them look at you, eyes wide, eyebrows raised. Taking out the ring of keys, you show it to them with a large grin.
Hobie jogs over to you quietly, the full moon watches his lips slowly curve into a smile. “How'd you—?”
“Pickpocketed it from the guard.” You smile back, “that's a new lock.” You gesture with your chin, whispering your words. “The usual lockpicks won't work on it. Here” giving the keys to Hobie through the gate, his hand linger on yours as he looks at you with shining eyes. “What?”
“You–” he chuckles. “You know how to pickpocket?”
“What? Like it's hard?” You joke, earning a deep laugh from Hobie.
“How do you even know about the locks?”
“Look who's asking the questions now,” you smirk. “I'm full of surprises I guess.”
After a beat, he stares into your eyes. “Stay with us”
Your heart skips a beat. “What?”
“I know you heard me, scuttlebutt.”
“I–” you consider it, but what would happen if you stayed? What would happen if you join and they still leave you down the road? It's better to go now and save yourself from the heartache.
“I can't” you let his hand go. “I have to go. Good luck, Hobie”
Walking away, you didn't miss how his smile falters.
It's better this way.
The smell of the musty tavern brings you back. A plate of ham and beans left almost untouched, it's not the same as Finn's. it tastes like tree bark compared to your meals on the ship. Huddled in a corner, you mindlessly read the book Hobie gave you, its pages pristine and well taken cared of.
You shut it closed, with your eyes growing heavy, you wonder where you're going to be sleeping tonight.
The doors bang open, a loud rambunctious group saunters in, yelling for drinks.
“First round’s on Gwen!” Someone shouts.
“I don't even drink, you fucker!” Gwen shouts back.
Wait, Gwen?
“Gwen?” You mumble.
Like fate, Gwen finds you amidst the crowd. Her eyes widen right before a smile replaces it.
Pavitr yells your name first, pointing at you like he hasn't seen you in years. Everyone follows his finger, the rest of them cheer, pushing patrons away to get to you. James shoves Danny out of the way, taking the closest seat next to you.
Ned grabs both of them by the hem of their shirts, “give her some space, fuckin' hell!”
You give him a smile as thanks, he nods once, mock saluting you.
Yuri guffaws loudly. “I knew it! We're meant to be together, eh?” She shakes your shoulder, planting a loud smooch on top of your head. You giggle, waving her away.
“Alright, let's all calm down.” You laugh loudly, “Mug, watch your stitches!”
“Sorry,” he murmurs.
Gwen sits next to you with a small smile while half of the group head on to the bar to order their alcohol.
“How'd it go?” You whisper to her, “where's Hobie?”
“Everything went well.” Her eyes darted all over the place. “Hobie went back to the ship to store the papers.”
“What's wrong?” You look around, trying to find what's gotten her nervous. “You alright?”
“Yeah, it's just—I don't know.”
“It was too easy.” Miles pipes up, handing Gwen a cup of something warm.
“That,” she nods as thanks to Miles, sighing. “He's right, it seemed too easy. We sneaked in, never making a sound.” She whispers closely. “We only saw three housekeepers in the entire manor and you know how these officials are.” you nod. “I'm just keeping an eye out for everyone, just in case.”
“That's why we chose this tavern, it's far from the manor.” Miles explains. “What are you doing here anyway? Aren't you supposed to be out and adventuring right now? Y’know ‘finding yourself’” he makes quotation marks with his fingers.
“I was just resting. Am I not allowed to rest?” You sarcastically say.
“Oh I'm not gonna miss you on board.” He sips from his cup.
“Sure, say how's that tea taste? Like shit right? I bet you're gonna miss the brew I always make for you” you ask with a teasing smile. Gwen chuckles next to you.
“You're horrible.” he says into his cup of swirling dark liquid. A ghost of a smile hiding behind the ceramic.
A bundled loaf of bread drops in front of you, almost shattering the plate of so-called ham and beans. Looking up, you see Finn nodding at you.
“Thank you, Finn.” You smile at him, he grunts in reply, heading towards the rest of the group.
Pav visibly sags into his chair, blowing his bangs out of his face.
Used to his attitude, you tilt your head, asking him. “What is it, Pav?”
“I'm tired,” he sighs. “And I'm gonna miss you.”
You feel heat behind your eyes. “I'll miss you too, Pav, and our late night talks.”
“You kept me awake,” you chortle. Pav tentatively reaches for your hand over the table, letting him in, you open your palm wordlessly. “I guess we didn't hit any rocks because of you chattering endlessly. So thank you.”
You smile, squeezing his hand once.
He drops his sadness, going back to his usual self. “Are you sure you can't stay? Come on! We've got…” he thinks for a second, finding the bread on the table he gestures towards it. “Bread!”
“A lot of places offer bread, Pav”
“Yeah, but they're not Finn's bread”
He's right, they're not Finn's, or Gwen's or Miles’ or Hobie's. They're not from the crew and nothing will ever be once you finally leave. Despite all of these, you smile, standing up with shaky legs.
“I have to go.” Your small voice echoes in their ears, they look at you with fond smiles. “Thank you, really.” You think about hugging them but you change your mind last minute, it's better this way, you say to yourself.
You wave goodbye, fighting yourself from looking back.
Exiting the tavern, the cold evening air blasts your cheeks, a tear escapes and you wipe it immediately.
“Y/N, wait!” Gwen runs after you. You stop in your tracks, looking over your shoulder with a sad smile.
You can't keep doing this, you need to leave, your mind tells you but your heart says otherwise.
“Here.” She hands you a hefty bag of coins, the pouch is pink with her name embroidered on it. “for your travels and as a thank you for helping with the crew.”
You shake your head, “I can't take this.” Pushing it back towards her. She gives you a stern look worthy of a first mate. “Gwen, I can't. Give it to the children, I don't want it.”
“You won't survive another day with what you have on you right now” before you could protest, she stuffs it into your bag. “You can pay me back when we meet again.”
You nod, “Alright, I'll pay you back. I promise”
“Good luck and I don't know if this might be helpful but we're heading north. If–if you want to come aboard again we'll be near the thousand islands. Waiting” the moonlight illuminates her sad eyes.
“Thank you, I'll think about it.” You turn around but you look back against better judgment. “Can you tell Hobie…just say thanks for me.”
“Will do Y/N.” Gwen smiles genuinely at you.
So you walk with no true destination. You roam around on your tired feet, waiting until something happens, you don't know what it could be and you're too fatigued to think right now.
A cat meows in the alley, followed by a chorus of soft mewls. Its bright green eyes blink slowly at you, an orange tubby and cream colored cat sidles up to the black cat. They meow simultaneously, getting your attention. Their noses probably got a whiff of the ham you've pocketed.
“Hungry?” You squat, taking the covered ham to give it to them. They take bites, sharing the meat with each other. “Yeah, I know the feeling.” sighing, you look at the end of the alley, your heart almost falls when you see the same engraving of a bird taking flight stamped on the side of a crate, followed by another and another.
“What the fuck.” You speed walk towards the docks, ankles hurting from all the running you've done. “Hey!” You yell at a worker who's currently loading the crates in a ship.
“Oi yourself” he turns around, hands on his hips.
You try to catch your breath, “what's that?” Pointing at the crate, the man looks at you like you've lost your mind.
“A fucking crate, love. You haven't seen a crate before?”
“No, I meant the design, the fucking sigil.”
“Ah, it's clearly a blue jay. look at its tail.” he gestures at the tail.
“That's— that's not what I was asking but thanks, I guess. I meant the sigil. What does it mean? And where is it going?” hope fills your chest.
“I dunno about the symbol, I just haul them in. As for where we're going, I'll tell you. For a price of course.” He smiles, showing his teeth with one gold fang.
“Fine.” You don't hesitate giving him a coin.
He chuckles, pocketing the money immediately. “Further north, near the capital.”
“The capital.” this is your chance so you take it. “How much? How much to board?”
He laughs at her face. “If only you were a man!” He eyes her up and down. “Clearly you're not.”
You scoff, glaring at the man. “You're fucking nasty.”
“Y/N?” The simple call of your name sends shivers down your spine.
Your heart stops beating for a second, you bolt it out of there without looking back at him. You know it's him, his booming voice yells after you, loud footsteps echoing in the night.
“Y/N!” Miguel yells.
His partner appears from an alleyway, you sprint past her without sparing her a glance.
“Whoa!” She yelps, almost falling on her back.
“It's her!” he screams, voice cracking from the sheer volume. “Lyla, it's Y/N!”
“Oh shit!”
You hear two sets of running footsteps behind you. There's no advantage for you this time, you don't know the city and its streets. It's only a matter of time before you walk into a dead end.
“Fuck!” With your aching knees, thighs burning, lungs gasping for air, you head towards the only sanctuary you can think of and where people can help defend you—The tavern.
You can feel him getting closer and closer to you, turning a corner, your ankles almost give out from the sudden turn. “No, no, no!” Limping slightly, you continue to run as fast as you can with a sprained ankle.
“Y/N, please!” His partner yells.
The familiar roof of the tavern peeks over all the houses, a beacon of hope for you. With a sudden tug on your arm, your body harshly takes an unwanted turn to the right. Strong yet familiar set of arms holds you, a calloused hand covers your mouth as you struggle to get out of the alcove.
“Calm down, it's me.” He whispers close to your ear.
You stop your squirming, looking up, Hobie's serious face looks at the opening of the alcove, eyebrows knitted together in anger.
Your back is squished on his chest, shaking hand holding his wrist. The dark alcove saves you as Miguel and Lyla run past.
Hobie takes his hand off your mouth, you heave, almost falling to your knees if not for him still holding on to you.
“Thank you.” You whisper like he could still hear you.
“Why is the former admiral comin' after you?” He turns you towards him in the cramped space, your knees banging on his legs, hips dangerously close to his.
“What? He's an admiral?” There's no way he's an admiral. You try to remember the day but it's been years, you don't recall him ever wearing a uniform.
“Yeah, he's—” Hobie shuts up, hearing voices from outside your little alcove.
It's him.
You look behind you and it’s a dead end. Craning your neck up, you have an idea.
“We need to climb up.” You quietly say, heart beating rapidly.
“Are you sure you can do it?” He looks at your swollen ankle.
You nod, “I don't have a choice.”
Hobie nods, lips tightly closed. “Alright. You go first, if you fall I'll catch you, again.” He doesn't waste an opportunity does he?
With your feet laying flat on the wall and your hands on the other side, back straight. You slowly make your way up. Hobie's close behind you, doing the same but managing his speed, slowing down for you.
Looking down, you almost fall as your ankle throbs.
Miguel's voice echoes out in the darkness, he's close.
“It's alright,” Hobie encourages you. “I'm right here, yeah? If you fall we'll run, even if I have to carry your arse out of here.”
Why couldn't your savior be Gwen?
With a roll of your eyes and a groan, you continue to climb up. Finally reaching the top, the moonlight greets you. Hobie helps you up by pushing you up by your feet, careful of your injury.
Laying down on the sodden roof. You roll over to the side to help him up by his hand, pulling with all your might.
Hobie climbs over the edge, laying down next to you, breathing heavily.
“I underestimated the height of that.” He says in between breaths.
“I underestimated how heavy you are.”
He pats his stomach. “This is pure muscle, trouble.” turning to face you, his piercings shine in the evening's light, smile across his lips like you're not hiding from someone.
“Full of Finn's stew more like.”
“I'm a growing boy, I need the sustenance.” he twists, looking below. “They're gone, I see them walking back towards the docks.”
You let yourself breathe again, head thumping on the roof. “Thank fuck.”
“Don't you mean thank me?” Hobie lays down next to you again, you groan in reply. “How's the ankle?”
“I think it's just sprained—” A twig snaps, you swear the roof caved in a bit. “What was that?”
“Shit, I think it's the—”
Crack!
The roof caves in, Hobie lunges for you mid air, holding on to you, hand guiding your head on his chest as he braces for impact.
You land on top of Hobie, he groans in pain, your eyes adjust at the candles littered around the frilly room.
“Shit! Are you bleeding? Please don't tell me you hit your head!” you frantically pat behind his head. Instead of warm ichor, you feel something soft.
You pull it out from behind his head without warning. He yelps when his head hits the carpeted floor.
Wincing, you apologize. “Sorry.” looking at the pillow in your hand, you're more confused than ever. More confusing than the sight of a crystal ball sitting in the middle of the table.
Roaming your eyes, you stop at a woman clad in furs and velvet, she stands frozen with her teacup in her hands.
“Uh, welcome to Nellie's?”
You're incredibly glad Nellie's nice, she even gave you ice for Hobie's back, ice! In this season! There's also ice on your swollen ankle, the cold seeping through your skin, giving you reprieve from the pain. You bet she's rolling in coins judging from all the generous ice she's given. Maybe you should learn how to be a fortune teller from her. You think about asking her if she needs an apprentice.
After dropping off almost half of Gwen's money to pay for the roof, you stare at it longingly, already missing its weight inside your bag.
She comes out of her kitchen, the beaded curtains flutter as she moves through it.
“Shoulders.” Hobie grumbles. He sits next to you, back hunched while you hold the ice on his back for him. “Y/N, move the bloody thing.”
“Right, you can say please, you know.” You slide the cloth covered ice up to his shoulders, he hisses when you hit his tender muscle. “Sorry, my fault.”
“Definitely your fault.” He quietly says with a pout.
“Oh don't be such a baby,” Nellie drops off a silver tray full of tea and crumpets. “I foresaw that you'll heal in no time.” she says with a smile.
Hobie raises a brow skeptically. You wordlessly communicate with him, telling him to shut it or she might call the coppers on you two. He sighs, rolling his eyes, taking a bite of a crumpet.
“So Nellie, you're a fortune teller huh? How exactly do you uh do that?” You ask, making conversation, careful of your words.
“I'm so glad you asked!” she giggles excitedly, pouring you and Hobie a cup each. Nellie drops a cube of sugar and milk in yours just like how you like it while Hobie gets three cubes. Wait.
Hobie beats you to it, “How'd you know I like my tea with three sugars?” He says with his mouth full.
Nellie smiles, tapping her temple. “I have the gift.” She sits down across from you, “although it's not always accurate, but I give it a” she sucks in her teeth, thinking. “Eighty percent chance of being right? My trusty crystal ball helps in filling the gaps.”
She gestures around the ball, making whooshing sounds.
You and Hobie share a look.
“Do you want a go?” She flicks her different colored eyes at you two. “I'll throw it in for free since you paid me already for the damages. I know I'm incredibly nice, no?”
You have nothing to lose, and you have to wait until Hobie recuperates. Said man eats his third crumpet.
“Sure, why not, right?” you chuckle nervously.
“Lower back.” Hobie instructs, you scoff before doing what he asked. He did save you again, that's the only reason why you do what he asks for.
“Fantastic! Let's start!” She claps her hands, the inside of the crystal ball swirls, pearlescent colors shining inside like water. “Oooh let's start off with you!” Nellie addresses you, you straighten up in your seat.
She roams her ringed hands around the ball. “I see that you're running from someone, M? I think?”
You look at Hobie in the corner of your eyes. He thickly swallows his crumpet. “Shoulders,” he says lowly. You move it up, annoyed.
“And for Mr. Hungry here,” she glances at Hobie. “Oh, I see the letter M too! You're more alike than I thought!”
Hobie stops eating, exchanging his crumpet for a cup of tea.
“Hmm, and a J? For…” she narrows her eyes, looking directly at the swirling colors. “The both of you, again. Huh?” Nellie chuckles, “that's— I've never seen that before, even from other couples.”
You swallow thickly, not bothering to correct her.
Taking your tea from the tray to calm your nerves.
She's dangerously accurate.
Her bright demeanor suddenly falls, her mismatched eyes empty and devoid of light. Her smile fades. “Something lurks in the water.” She says flatly.
“Alright, we should go.” Hobie stretches his back. “This is all bollocks, let's go–”
Nellie suddenly punches the table. Hobie sits back down, holding your wrists just in case he needs to run.
“I see the blazing sun and sand beneath your feet” She sharply turns towards you. “Don a white dress and you'll find what you're looking for.”
You take your wrist away from Hobie. “What do you mean?”
She ignores you, twisting suddenly towards Hobie. “I see blood and steel kissing your neck if you stay on the path. Answer her call and you'll be safe.”
Hobie looks at her with an unreadable face. Fists tightly closed. “Whose call?” She ignores him, blinking rapidly.
Nellie smiles back, the light in her eyes coming back. “Oh look at that! I see the same white dress and sun in yours!” She giddily says to a confused Hobie. “A beach wedding perhaps?” She giggles while you and Hobie are shaking in your seats.
Hobie has had enough, taking your wrist again, he stands up. “Thank you for the hospitality and for not screaming bloody murder but we have to go.”
“To plan the wedding?”
“No, to murder and pillage.” Hobie takes the ice from the floor. “Goodbye”
“Uh sorry about the roof!” You yell back. He tugs you outside.
“Wait, are you two pirates?” Nellie asks into the now empty room, scratching her head.
The sun is rising as you and Hobie sneak quietly out of town and into the secret dock where the revenge rests.
You can't help but exhale out your nerves once you reach the ship. Hobie's shoulders visibly relax, waving towards Gwen who's eyes widen when she sees you. Pavitr stands next to her, wiggling his eyebrows at you.
You shake your head rapidly, he gives you a thumbs up while Miles has the most disgusted look on his face.
Hobie turns around, “You comin’?”
You contemplate what happened today, your bones are aching and begging for sleep.
“I–I need to go.”
Hobie could only nod, walking away from you without looking back. “Lift the anchor” you hear him say from the ship.
The crew waves back at you, faces of different variety, some smiles, some could only look at you with sad eyes. Finn nods, a small smile on his lips. Gwen leaves, sparing you a glance. You think you hear Yuri yell ‘no, my wife!’ you chuckle to yourself in the empty dock.
You watch as the people's revenge sails further away, the anchor lifting back up slowly.
North. The word jumps back at you. They're heading north.
Without thinking, you run.
Your ankle screams for you to stop, but your grin says otherwise. You pray to every divine entity out there to help you reach the anchor in time and to not let you drown.
“Wait!” You yell. Everyone runs towards the edge of the ship, watching with wide eyes as you run the length of the wooden dock.
Pavitr cheers you on, yelling loudly. Everyone else follows his lead, hands rhythmically banging on wood, screams making you run faster.
Hobie beams from the ship. Tossing off his large coat and hat, he climbs to the side of the boat through its ropes, as close as he can get to you.
With an outstretched hand, he calls for you. “C’mon, trouble!”
With a running leap, your fingers graze his palms. You don't make it.
Hobie lets himself fall, holding your hand with both arms. The crew made themselves a rope to hold Hobie while he grips on to you tightly.
You laugh loudly, seeing the human chain, Gwen holds on to Hobie's waist, while Miles holds on to Gwen, Pav and the others begin to heave you all up to the boat.
With a jump, you reach up with your dangling arm to hold on tight to his shoulder.
Hobie beams down at you, “I hope you've read the book because these wankers might let us go for shits and giggles.”
“No I haven't,” you say above the wind, feet dangling several feet off the deep waters. “But I trust them. I know they've got me.”
The sun wakes up to loud cheering and smiles.

Hobie x OC! Came out fine I think, not totally in love w it but I like it :3
If you like it, it’s based on @the-kr8tor’s series (Between the Devil and the Sea) which I’ve been procrastinating on reading for weeks lol

I think my next fic will be out somewhere near early May? Idk though, it’s midterms season and everyone’s super busy, plus drawing’s easier than writing rn

okok cuz we’ve been talking AUs all day —
what about pirate!hobie and mermaid!miles
hobie is the captain of his own ship that has been skillfully avoiding navy captain!miguel o’hara and he finds a reef of mermaids
not only that he finds miles perched on a rock and he’s just gorgeous
miles would definitely be curious about all the human trinkets that hobie has and hobie is more than glad to explain them all to miles
hobie would spend hours on the sand watching miles talk about the reef he’s from and his childhood
pav and gwen would def be a part of hobie’s crew and they’re immediately shipping the two
hobie has to leave to routinely to make sure that miguel doesn’t catch up to him and miles is always so sad when he leaves
but hobie always promises to return and to come back with more trinkets for miles
miles keeps everything that hobie brings to him

Treasure for Three Days [8][Finale]
Tumblr media
Pirate!Miguel x Princess!Reader
//Smut, Kissing, unprotected sex, oral, throat fucking, overstimulation, first times [pls comment if I miss anything]
A/N: Thank you for your patience
Previously
"Just couldn't stay away from you, hermosa." He chuckled at your flushed state.
"Yeah....I notice" You smiled. You glanced back at the shoreline, seeing your father shouting for you to come back.
This time, though, you're sure you don't want to.
You don't how you ended up here, but you sure as hell this is what you meant by taking your mundane life away.
Sure, running, piracy, and chasing wasn't the exact scene that comes to your head, but it's better than you could expect.
Lovely even.
The sun is setting, a mixture of orange and subtle purple paint the sky, and the shoreline of your kingdom is long forgetten in the distance.
Right now, you inhale the salty yet fresh air of the ocean, your face ached from smiling so widely from the event that transpired, but you can't find yourself to stop smiling.
The crew seemed to be happy that your back, saying things like keeping the captain in control.
You chuckle at their words, you only spent three-ish days with them yet you felt a deep bond.
"I see you're still nothing but a deep thinker, hermosa."
Your head turned around to see Miguel approaching you with a smirk.
He slightly bends down to kiss you on your lips, and you smile even wider.
"Hello to you too," you mused.
"Mmm, missed the taste."
Miguel seemed to stare into your soul with his piercing red-brownish eyes, and you can't help but shiver.
"Glad I didn't make you marry that snob of a prince."
"You met my fiance? Is that how you got your royal clothes from?"
"Fiance? No more of that bebita. And maybe... Maybe threatened him with a sword against his neck for good measures."
You chuckle.
"Sword agaist his neck? Sounds a bit familiar don't you think?"
He seemed to think for a while and laughed at the memory.
"Glad I did it." He smiled to you. His hands caressing your waist.
"Cap'n! The sails are okay and wind is steady." A crewmate reported, breaking you and Miguel in your bubble of light flirting.
"Good. Keep her busy, if im needed I'll be in my quarters."
You lightly yelp as you were dragged by the waist and made to follow Miguel to his room.
Once you both arrived and the door was shut, Miguel didn't waste time diving to your lips.
Your eyes widened a bit but you quickly returned his affection.
"Eager, are we? I didn't expect the infamous Miguel O'hara to be smitten." You teased.
"That's right, big bad, Arachne captain got the hots for a little princess. Now I wonder if that princess is willing to fix the problem?" He teased back as his hands go at the back of your dress, untying the corset as he does.
With the corset starting to loosen, you kissed him again.
He chuckles
"It's a yes then? Well what are we waiting for hm?"
With that, he suddenly carried to bridal style and promptly dropped you to the bed.
He didn't waste time kissing you feverishly.
While kissing, you didn't notice him taking a dagger nearby. He disconnected the kiss for him to slice the fabrics and threads that held your dress.
"Wha-Hey!-"
"Shhh, I'll get you a new one, as many as you like. Maybe more than your wardrobe."
He threw the dagger randomly on the floor and ripped the rest of your dress with his hands.
His lips returned to you and moved down to your neck.
You shuddered as you felt soft lips tracing the veins in your neck and down to your collarbone. The dress finally removed, and he threw its scrap randomly on the floor alongside the dagger.
"Mmm- Miguel"
"Relax for me bebita, that's it."
His hands caressed every skin that it could find, rubbing circles on your arms, until it reached your thighs, and then your knees.
While his lips are occupied for leaving you marks, his hands spread your legs apart to give him room.
You lightly gasped when you felt his bulge slightly drag at your clothed pussy.
He stopped his mistrations with his lips and hissed a cursed.
His eyes looked down at your underwear, he glared at it as if it did a grave sin agaist him.
In this scenario it probably did.
His hands left your knees and immediately went to remove your underwear.
Once off, your suddenly felt shy. Causing you to close your legs a bit but Miguel is quicker stop you.
"Mmnh, non of that hermosa, don't go shy on me now."
You bit your lip and slightly nodded as you opened your legs a bit again.
Miguel is still fully clothed. Your hands went to the buttons of his blouse.
Miguel seem to be happy with your intiative and let your unbutton his blouse and next were his pants.
When he finally slid off his clothes you gulp as his stature.
Miguel is big, his muscles, his height...
And that horse between his legs.
Miguel sensed your nerves and one of his hands raised up to pet your head.
"We'll take it easy, hermosa, But who knows, maybe next time I wouldn't if you keep looking at like that." He teased.
"Ego is as high as ever." You smiled.
Your eyes focused on his dick, it's size made you question how'd it fit into your mouth before, and now you want to question how it will fit into you overall.
You suddenly think 'fuck it'. You just ran away from your home and you finally gonna get the life you wanted.
A little rod down your throat should'nt stop you.
You raised your body so you could go down on your knees, Miguel's member just right in front of you.
You took your hands and gently wrapped it around it's length, Miguel hissed at the contact.
You find your lips connecting to his tip, licking off any excess precum that's starting to drip off.
Miguel hissed more, biting his bottom lip. His hands automatically held the back of your head, not pushing you further but enough to encourage you.
You took the sign and continued licking his length. After a few more licks, you sucked his tip.
"fffffuuck, that's it bebita. go o-on."
Your movements made his hips buck, almost putting his length into your mouth.
You licked and sucked a few more times, and finally, with a deep breath of courage and a whole lotta confidence to do it, you took his length halfway making it hit the back of your throat.
"Ah, ¡Mierda!"
His hand is now gripping your hair, giving you a bit of a sting but who cares at this point.
You bobbed your head, each bob making you take his length deeper into you.
If Miguel was known to be the fearsome and strongest pirate captain out there.
He's also known for not being patient.
With you almost taking his length down your throat, Miguel uttered a word you couldn't hear and the last thing you know was both of his hands holding the side of your head and ramming his cock down your throat roughly.
"Hgrk!" You gagged, your nose hitting his pelvic area and your senses are filled with Miguel.
Miguel didn't seem to mind since all he did was move your head for you while thrusting his hips to the same rhythm.
Your ears hear nothing but your own gagging noises and Miguel's swearing and grunts.
"Shhhit, a-amor that...thats it!"
With a few more thrusts, he held your head to stay in one place, then you finally felt that familiar warmth down your throat.
After a few minutes, Miguel finally let your head go letting you let his length out of your mouth.
Miguel above you was a panting mess, but you were much worse.
Make up the maids put on you this morning was all ruined with tearstreaks ruining the eye makeup and drool smudging the lipstick.
You might look worse but Miguel could beg to differ.
While you also took a breather, you notice his cock twitching back to hardness, and it did nothing but make you throb for it.
"Breath in as much as you need hermosa, it's gonna be a long night."
------
"Mi-Miguel!"
Your pleas go from one ear to another since Miguel was too busy ramming into you as if it's your last day all over again.
Both of you don't know if minutes or hours has gone by.
But sure as hell you both are enjoying it.
Miguel took his time to prepare you and your body, giving you praises here and there. Caresses are placed everywhere. And you thank the gods for being able to survive the thing between his legs.
"So good...So goo- fuck!"
While you were writhing in overstimulation, Miguel was busy enjoying himself.
His dick hitting that one spot you swore you saw stars with.
Forget stars. You were seeing whatever Galileo Galilei saw in the telescope.
Your moans and Miguel's grunts fill the room entirely that you weren't surprised if the entire ship could hear it.
But you can't think right now, no thoughts go in your head when Miguel started increasing in speed, the bed creaking with his movements.
You screamed his name but he doesn't seem to care.
His hands being on the side of your head, started gripping the sheets hard, a tale tell sign his close.
So were you.
You were now babbling mess beneath him, your mind felt pleasure no where near imagination.
"Come with me hermosa, come with....Fuck!"
His hips stuttered in movement as he finally gave one last thrust into you before you felt warm liquid flow inside of you.
You body convulsed at the feeling, shockwaves spread around your muscles making them tense and shake.
You said Miguel's name one last time before your body went limp.
You gaze above Miguel and he does the same to you.
His face was lightened only by the moonlight through the window.
Miguel gazed down onto you, he felt nothing but admiration for your being. You look like a divine being and him, just a mere mortal.
As both of you catch your breath, Miguel finally laid down next to you, wrapping his arms around you and you felt nothing but safety in the arms of your lover.

While you and Miguel are busy resting.
The crew was busy distracting themself at the scenery.
"Bloody hell... Those two finally shut up." Hobie muttered with a sigh.
Miles chuckled.
"Well, at least we finally have someone who can hold back Captain with his mood swings."
Hobie hummed in agreement. Resting his eyes
After a few seconds, he opened his eyes in realization. Hobie looked at Miles with a smirk.
"I know that look, I dont like that look."
Hobie didn't say anything but lend his hand out.
Miles looked at it and sighed deeply. He reached out his back and put out a pouch of gold. Throwing it to Hobie who catched it happily.
"A bet is a bet mate, so are rules." Hobie chuckled. "Told ya I always win"
"Oh shut up." Miles scoffed but that didn't erase his smile.
As much as the crew didn't get enough sleep that night they were glad your back. Someone who can laugh at their shenanigans and someone who can be of assistance when talking to Miguel.
And Miguel was nothing but glad he got his treasure back.

Unedited, it was like 2am here and I couldn't get this out my head. It was supposed to just be the picture🤦🏾‍♀️

You peak out from inside the crate you had snuck on board the ship in. Checking around to make sure no one was there. Sighing in relief you climb out hitting the ground with a grunt as a wave rocked the boat.
Boat. Waves. The smell of ale, fish, and salt fills your lungs. You can't help but smile in glee. You'd made it on board the ship and you're currently at sea. You couldn't believe it had worked out so easily. Sure you didn't mean to doubt Peter when he'd come up with the plan but honestly the man spent half the time coming up with it bragging about his baby and how his wife would kill him if he came along.
Smiling, you sit up, careful not to fall again as you made your way to the door. The rocking of the boat wasn't too hard to get accustomed to, and you found yourself giddy all over again feeling like a sea fairing natural.
Peaking out the door, you look both ways before creeping up the hall in hopes of finding the female pirate you'd got a glimace of earlier. Rumors and tales had her known as the ghost-spider pirate. Known for her association with death and bad luck for being a woman at sea but also for her tales of adventure and vigilantism alongside Captain Brown, the feared and renowned punk Captain of the Anarchy.
You keep up the pace, hearing chatter and laughter above you. Distracted, you don't notice the figure leaning against the wall you just pasted. A chuckle stops you you in your tracks and you turn comedically slow toward the sound.
A tall man stares at you with a smirk. The gold ring on his lip glinting in the low light the only way you can tell his lip is quirked. You're not able to see much of him due to how dark it is in the hall, and the notion scares you a bit. You straighten up hand falling to the sword on your hip. You're not very well trained on using it but you'd be damned if you went down without a fight.
"Whoa there..." He raises his hands, not moving from the shadows. He's watching you noticing the waver in your hands and the improper posture. "..was only going to ask how you got ya self lost down here, guppy." His tone is teasing, nonchalant as if he's unbothered by a stranger sneaking around the ship supposedly threatening him.
You narrow your eyes before huffing as he obviously isn't falling for your bluff. "I'm here to speak to ghost-spider. That's all. I want to know her story and how I can get accepted as a woman adventurer...I mean no harm and I have no intentions of stealing or making a burden of myself. So if you'd politely lead me to her or the Captain." Standing your ground you stare into what you assume is the eyes of the man daring him to deny you.
He chuckles, stepping forward the click of his heels against the wood loud in the quiet hall. You hold in a gasp as he reveals himself. You don't recognize him as most the pirates have identifying markings on their coats. However, this man is in a casual blouse and trousers. Nothing identifying on him. He's tall and quite handsome the smirk you could feel showing clear as day as he steps foward further into your space, causing you to step back, gripping the hilt of your sword.
"Don't come any closer! I'm not sure who on the crew you are but I'm not afraid to draw my sword against you" His laughter startles you almost diffusing the fear with confusion and annoyance. He looks you over a mischievous glint in his eyes as he nods toward your sword.
"Be good to learn how to hold it before threatenin to use it, guppy. Won't do you any good if it's holder isn't even unbundled." He nods toward the latch keeping the sword handle in place. You groan as you realize he's right, but don't move from your defensive position instead undoing the buckle without breaking eye contact you raise a brow at him.
"As I said be kind enough to lead the way or allow me to pass I've no interest in your games, sir. I'm here to accomplish my dreams and I refused to let you stop me" you stand your ground, watching as an impressed look briefly washes over his face.
"As you wish, guppy. Right this way then. Feel free to draw your sword while my back is turned but I don't think it'll go over well with the rest of the crew" He shrugs hands sliding into his pockets as he walks past you toward a door you had passed not to long ago. He opens it showing the stairs to the deck and causing the sound of chatter and waves to get louder.
You followed him up, taking in your surroundings in amazement, not noticing how quiet it had gotten. You push past him the moment you see the waves across the side of the ship. The sight of open sea confirming you really had made it.
"Who's this, cap?" You hear a different voice from the one you'd become acquainted too. Turning around, you see the whole crew standing around you, the man from earlier in the front next to the blond haired pirate you'd been hoping to meet. She wasn't the one to ask the question though confused you look to see who they could be talking about. The man who'd led you here smirks stepping foward and placing an arm over your shoulder. He grins as he faces the crew.
"This is guppy! A stowaway. The lad Peter told us all about before we left port. As captain, I went down to meet her for myself, and she's just as fiery as he said! She even threatened me with her sword. A fine addition to our band of misfits if I do say so myself" He makes the announcement, and you can feel yourself drain of color as you realize just who you'd been with this whole time. The captain brown the dreaded punk of the seas had bot only known you'd stowed away on his ship but come to get you himself and allowed you to make an absolute blunder of yourself in front of him.
"Don't worry, guppy. I'm not known to hold grudges against pretty lasses like yourself. And as you said, you had no intentions of making a burden of yourself." He looks down at you speaking just loud enough for you to hear over the cheers of the crew. With a wink, he guides you to the female pirate herself before walking off to chat with his crew.
There's three things you noticed.
One there more than just ghost-spider heres who's female. That alone almost let's you push past the second fact.
Two you had threatened the infamous Captain of the Anarchy and lived to tell the tale. Hell he'd given you a nickname and said you were one of theirs now.
Three Peter made you hide in a box and pretend to be cargo when he'd apparently already told the whole crew you'd be joining.
Sighing, you shook your head taking one last glance at who you now know is captain hobie brown. You meet his gaze and he winks causing you to startle and turn quickly back to Gwen, who looked amused at the situation.
Gwen smiled, shaking the hand you stuck out to her wtih amusement. "You're in for a lonnnng ride. Let me introduce you...".

CHAPTER 6 >>> CHAPTER 7
Tumblr media
With Pavitr’s arm slung over your shoulder and James handing you a glass that smells incredibly strong, your heart has never felt this content in years. You laugh as Yuri wins an arm wrestle round for the third time that day. Everyone cheers, Yuri flexes with a rare wide smile.
It's been a few hours since your daring jump, you can still feel Hobie's hands on yours and the crew clasping your shoulders happily once they finally lifted you up. With their warm welcome and after the whole debacle, Hobie insisted that there should be a celebration for a mission accomplished.
“Someone rum me up!” she yells and you immediately give her your untouched glass. “Oh hell yeah, thank you, wifey!” Yuri winks, already drunk.
“I'm not your wife, Yuri!” You happily yell above the noise.
She gasps dramatically, “oh you wound me!” You shake your head with a smile.
“Yeah, Yuri, she's already taken!” Pav pipes up from your side, shaking your shoulders.
You clasp your hand over his chattering mouth, the crowd guffaws, asking you numerous questions.
“Oi! Who's got you all smitten then?” Two fingers asks.
“Oh look at her smile!” Ned joins in with the teasing.
“Alright, who do I have to fight for your hand?” Yuri has her hands on her hips, a teasing smile on her painted lips.
“No one! Pav's being a little shit!” you wrangle Pav while he tries to wiggle out.
He manages to get out, acting like he's deprived of air. “Isn't it obvious, it's the ca–”
Finn huffs loudly, his large frame casting a shadow over the small table. You sigh, relieved that Finn unintentionally saved you from all the teasing.
Yuri looks him up and down, the alcohol in her veins inflates her ego. With a smug smile on her lips, she sits back down on the stool, laying her elbow down on the table, flexing her hand towards Finn, challenging him for a match.
Everyone quiets down, flicking their eyes between the two.
You never thought you'd see the day, Finn grins, sitting across Yuri. With a loud thump, he copies his opponent’s movement, his large hand dwarfing Yuri's.
A loud cheer erupts, overflowing cups sloshing out, some even jump for joy. You blame the alcohol.
Pav leaves your side, going around to collect bets. The crew coughs up coins, you watch, beaming, nodding along to the light strumming of Ned's well loved guitar.
Backing away from the crowd, you leave everyone to get some air. The throbbing ache in your ankle protests so you lean on the ship's bannister, watching the vast sea waving to you. The afternoon sun bearing down, its warmth a welcome one from the cool sea breeze.
A steaming cup suddenly appears, balancing on the wooden railing. A lithe hand pushes it towards you wordlessly.
“Another olive branch?” You tease, side eyeing Hobie.
“No, I figured you'd want something to drink when you didn't drink the rum.” With his back against the bannister, elbows propped over it, he leans casually, face upwards, basking in the sun. His silver piercings glint in the light, a familiar pendant around his neck.
“Were you watching me? You stalker” taking the cup, you raise it to your smiling lips. Turmeric, you surmise based on the taste. You let the herbal tea soothe your aching ankle.
“I was watching my crew.” Hobie faces you, muscles relaxed, content. “How's the injury?”
“Getting better,” you twist your foot around, testing the pain. There's a dull ache now, the ice from Nellie's helped. “How'd you know about turmeric?” looking at him, you watch as his smile turns into a grin.
“‘m full of surprises I guess.” he throws your own words at you.
You roll your eyes, “You're insufferable, captain.”
“And I, you.” His eyes are soft. Before you know it, Hobie's already walking away.
The roaring laughter gets your attention. Yuri stands on the rickety table, arms up in glee with a look that screams ‘I'm a winner!’ Meanwhile, Finn is standing next to her, visibly worried, holding onto a very drunk Yuri who keeps riling up the crowd with her triumphant yells.
You guess the rum has special properties if Yuri can beat the large Finn at his own game.
The crew parts for Hobie, you'd think he would put a stop to Yuri's rambunctious celebration. Instead, he hops up on the wobbly table, sharing the already small space with Yuri who guffaws loudly, clapping rhythmically.
“Scoundrels!” She yells at the top of her lungs, the crew cheers, matching her energy.
Gwen sidles up next to you wordlessly, shoving you lightly. Giving her a smile, you watch the carriage wreck in front of you.
“May I introduce, Hobie motherfuckin’ Brown!” Yuri drops backwards, making you flinch towards her general direction. Good thing Finn's got her in his strong arms.
Yep, she's properly drunk off her ass.
Hobie takes a glass from someone, raising it up, the crew quiets down. A hush fills the ship, the sound of wood rocking against waves can only be heard above the silence.
“Rapscallions” They urge him on. “ne'er-do-wells!” The cheering gets louder. “Fuckin’ rascals!” He paused, the yells are ear drum bursting. “We finally got the king's swine!” You hear glasses breaking.
Hobie continues, quieting down the entire ship with one clear of his throat. “With the papers we have we finally know where the son of a bitch is sailing to.” His voice shakes from sheer anger and determination. “This time we get the upper hand.” His men hoot and cheer. “We will fight until we get our hands on the bastard that cut half of our crew. This time we get our bloody revenge!”
He downs the entire glass of rum in one drink, swallowing it like water. Meanwhile the rest of the crew follow his lead, gulping their own drinks fervently.
The cheering got so loud your ears started ringing.
You really hope they get the navy captain so that you can find your family who may or may not be up north. Until then, you'll stay with the crew and hope for the best that there'll be minimal injuries incurred during the fight.
You can't seem to find sleep despite how tired you were of yesterday’s events. Tossing and rolling in your bed, with a huff, you fling away the blanket. Lacing up your well worn shoes, you open the creaking door quietly.
With only the moonlight as your guide, you walk the familiar hallways, feet carefully avoiding the noisy floorboards.
Entering the library, lighting the oil lamp left on the table, you roam the bookshelves. With the help of the lamp, it illuminates the old spines. But nothing has piqued your interest, finding the titles too dull to keep your attention or too engrossing that you might not fall asleep when you inevitably drown in its pages.
Yawning, you think of another way to help you sleep. Maybe a glass of water might help? Or better yet, a cup of warm tea and biscuits might satiate you.
So you traverse the hallways once again, passing by cabins. Careful not to make any noise or you might face the wrath of a sleep deprived pirate. You know what they say, it's better to tease a drunk pirate rather than wake one from their slumber.
With silent footfalls, you almost jump in your skin when you see the captain himself brewing a pot of something that smells incredibly sweet.
With his back turned away from the door, you're sure you can slink away without him noticing.
“Scuttlebutt,” he half chuckles as the floorboards under you creak while you try to escape. “Want some hot chocolate?”
You groan, defeated. Turning around, he greets you with a smug smile, his eyes showing how fatigued he is but the light is still there, saying otherwise.
“What the hell is hot chocolate?” crossing the space, you lean on the kitchen island, facing Hobie on the other side. “I thought chocolate was supposed to be cold.”
“You're in for a treat then. ‘m guessing you've never had chocolate before?” he takes a clean mug for you, laying it next to his.
“Nope,” you pop the letter p, trying your best not to wipe your heavy eyes. “Chocolate is a luxury few can afford.”
Hobie hums, pouring the hot liquid in each cup.
This is what ambrosia might've smelt like, you thought.
“It's chocolate melted down with hot water or milk. Lucky for you, we got a few bottles of ‘em from one of the families. But we need to consume it fast or it'll go bad quickly.”
He hands you the cup, taking it tentatively, you don't flinch back when he suddenly grabs your hand to hold it when he gets impatient from your apprehensiveness.
“Don't worry, I already gave Pav and the first shift their share so you can drink to your heart's content.”
You look into the swirling brown liquid, the warmth from the cup soothes your nerves. Taking a sip, Hobie watches with crinkling eyes and a smile hidden behind his own mug.
“Holy fuck! Sweet nectar of the Gods!” You say before you take a big gulp, the heat searing your tongue. “Ack!” Spluttering out, Hobie lets out a loud laugh.
“Be careful it's hot” he says in between laughs.
“I know, but it's so good though!” You exclaim, eyes twinkling with mirth.
Hobie chuckles, watching you swallow the liquid down to the last drop.
You sigh, full and happy. “If solid chocolates taste like this then I'm more than ready to raid a merchant ship carrying crates of it.”
Hobie shakes his head. “I've never thought chocolate could make someone a pirate.”
“Not a pirate.” You move to pour yourself a cup. Hobie beats you to it, the sweet drink sloshing inside, filling it to the brim.
“Hmm” he watches you through his lashes.
“You're thinking, that's bad.” You take your cup but Hobie holds it hostage with his hand over the ceramic.
“What are you really doing back here?”
“I couldn't sleep, I just wanted some water.” you move to try and take the mug from him but he moves it further from you.
“There's some outside.”
“Fuck off.” Your hips hit the corner of the kitchen counter harshly as you try to grab your cup sneakily. The mug of precious chocolate scrapes on the counter, making you glare at Hobie when a few drops of it spills. “What do you really mean by that, Hobie?”
He scoffs, “You being here is suspicious—”
“How many times do I have to tell you? I'm not navy.” You say with gritted teeth. You're not sure if he's just messing with you or he's truly being genuine.
“Not that. Not after O’Hara ran a bloody marathon for you, I know you're not one of ‘em. Or at least not anymore.”
You glare at him, getting angrier the second he uttered that name.
“Are you a deserter? Hmm? Are you his runaway bride? If so I don't blame you, I'd run away too.”
You grimace. “Fuck no, I'm neither of those things! Now can you please give me my chocolate?”
“No.” He blinks like he just got some revelation. “Fuck, are you his kid?”
“No! What? How'd you even get that conclusion? Do I look like—?”
“For all I know you could be an aristocrat.” He raises a brow.
“Oh come on!” You're properly annoyed. “I've been scrounging up food and coins for years. If I was a runaway noble lady then I would've come home to my mansion the second I was starving!”
“Why did the retired admiral run after you then? He looked like he wanted your bloody arse.”
“It's none of your business.” The fire in your eyes tries to convey your emotions. “I don't want to talk about him.” your voice turns shaky.
“It's my business because you're on my ship. If Miguel O'Hara's after you I need to know if the rest of my crew is in danger.” a few weeks ago his infuriated face would've scared you but now you're equally as mad as him.
You exhale, knuckles closed tightly on your side. “Fine, I'm here on your ship because you're heading north and I need to go north. You don't need to know about me and that man because I'm leaving when we get there. He won't come after the crew, I won't let him.”
His anger dissipates, eyes avoiding your own. “Here,” he stretches his arm, sliding the cup to you. Hobie winces from the movement, grabbing onto his chest instinctively.
“What is it?” You look at his pained expression. Walking around the counter, you step towards him, not too close but not too far that you wouldn't notice how his brows are knitted together, sweat dripping on his forehead.
Carefully reaching for him, you turn him gently towards you, not missing how hot his skin is under his shirt. “Hobie, look at me.” You say softly, hand squeezing his shoulder in an attempt to comfort him.
After a beat he looks at you with his stormy eyes, rain clouds dancing around his vision. “‘m fine, just need to sit down.”
“Let me see please” He freezes in front of you. “I'm here to help, aren't I? Now can I?” With a nod, he unbuttons his shirt slowly. Now open, a bandage is taped across his chest, dark blood seeping through it, clearly needing to be changed. “Fuck.”
“That bad?” He rasps.
“Yes, sit down.” You guide him towards a chair, surprisingly, he lets you. “I need to take it off to see the wound.” Hobie nods.
You kneel down in front of him, he sucks in his teeth with every tug and pull you do. The wound looks almost infected because of the careless bandaging and half hearted cleaning.
“Stay here, I'll get the things I need.”
He stops you with his hand bracelet around your wrist. “Tell me why you need to head north. There's nothing there but pompous politicians and leeching royals.”
“I think–” you start but you have no idea how to continue. Hobie looks up at you, hand sliding down to fit your own. “I think my family's there.” Without sparing any detail, you slip your hand out, turning away to head towards the infirmary.
His skin is hot against your hands, too warm for your liking. Sitting in between his legs, cotton shirt fully opened to reveal his wound and scarred chest. His newly bandaged knuckles rested on his thighs, they didn't need much cleaning but the skin was still open so you still did it just in case. The bottles of herbs rattle as the boat rocks from side to side.
Hobie's legs bounce up and down, the silence and tension is thick enough that your needle couldn't even poke through it. The ointment you're gently rubbing on him makes him wince, trouser leg bundled up in his shaking knuckles.
“Sorry, if there's any consolation, I hate this stuff too.” you quietly say. The strong smell from the mixture makes your nose itch.
“Were you a clumsy kid?” Hobie says, sucking in his teeth.
“Mm-hmm, I was climbing everywhere.” Chuckling softly. “Up in trees, roofs, got into so much trouble that she–” You stop, swallowing thickly. “I got a few scars to prove it.”
“We could compare–” he winces again when you press a little too hard on his wound but not too hard for it to bleed again. “Fuck…”
You hide your smile with a clear of your throat. “Sorry.”
“Fuck off, I know you're not sorry.” He laughs while you stifle yours.
Packing the mixture on his wound to combat any further infection, you make your hands extra gentle with every press and swipe.
“You should've told me about this.” Chastising him, you feel his eyes burn into your skull. “I could've prevented this, you know.”
“I've been told ‘m a stubborn bastard.”
“Oh I know. You did a shitty job at cleaning it by the way.”
“That's why you're here now, right?” His idle hands play with a hanging thread by your sleeves. He's not tugging at it so you don't mind, anything to keep his mind off the pain.
“So how'd you know about the turmeric for swelling?” You don't answer his question.
His smile falters before a small fond smile appears. “From someone a long time ago.”
Finishing up with cleaning his gash, you take a clean bandage from the table to cover and protect it. “They must be good then. Not a lot of people know about it.”
“Yes, she was.”
You pause, staring directly at his sad eyes. Hobie continues, “She was like you, brazen and full of fire.” He stares off into the distance, “A bloody force to be reckoned with.”
“A jack of all trades, she was. Always tryin’ to learn shit she didn't have to know.” Hobie flicks his eyes to you. “She knew how to swim, so that's a plus.”
You chuckle as he stares at your soft smile.
“Yours?” He asks tentatively, hand twitching to get closer to you.
“Does she know about ginger and honey?” Like a switch flicking, you stand up abruptly. “It's gonna help with your fever.”
Hobie doesn't press you for any information, instead, he lays back on the chair, letting you pamper him while your hot chocolate gets cold on the counter.
Preparing his tea, you can't help but feel bad for Hobie. Without him ever saying her name you know it's her, and you know he cared about her so much that whatever happened to MJ drove him to this state; a constant agony and hunger for revenge that if not satiated might consume him. He doesn't deserve it you think, he might be a pirate but during the time you've known him you found kindness in his frozen heart that's just waiting to be thawed out the moment he gets his revenge.
For his sake and the crew, you hope he gets what he always wanted.
“Here,” handing him the hot concoction, you're careful not to spill a single drop on him.
Hobie takes it, calloused fingers brushing yours. Taking a whiff of it, he makes a face that makes you scoff with a smile.
“If you can drink an entire glass of rum without choking then you can handle a simple tea.”
He side eyes you, shaking his head like a petulant child rejecting his medicine.
“Down the hatch, Hobie.” Bringing your hand under the cup, you guide it towards his tightly closed mouth. “It's sweet!”
“Nuh-uh” he shuts his lips closed the second he says it before you could shove the tea down his gullet.
Laughing, you can't believe the big bad captain of the bloodsail pirates is refusing to drink a simple ginger tea. “Do you need me to plug your nose, you big baby?” You say in between giggles.
“No, fine, I'll bloody drink it. I don't want your grimey hands all over my face.”
“These grimey hands were all over your chest treating your wound, you absolute child.” You regret your words the second you realize.
“Oh you were all over me, huh?” He smirks. You're glad that he can still smile after everything.
“Fuck off, drink it or don't, I don't care. Go die in a corner or something” you shrug, playing him like a fiddle.
“You really do care about me, Scuttlebutt.” With a deep breath, Hobie drinks the contents without any fuss.
You pat yourself on the back mentally. He coughs, scrunching his nose.
“I need to check your wound and clean it every eight hours. Got it?” You face him directly, hand on the side of his chair, looking down at him sternly.
“So you're finally askin' me out then? Pav was right, you're smitten.” Hobie has the brightest smile of a feverish man you've ever seen.
“Shithead.” You say, snatching the empty cup from his hands.
“You really do care about me. You've even given me a nickname”
You shake your head, taking your cold chocolate, flipping him the bird on the way out of the door.
“Lookin' forward to my next doctor's appointment, Trouble!” Hobie yells after you, his loud guffaw can be heard echoing out in the hallways.
You fall back into a comfortable routine. Helping the crew with their tasks and learning their ways throughout the time spent. You finally learn that the murky bucket of water doesn't have lye in it after seeing James dunk his entire arm in it. It's safe to say that he was covered in soapy water from head to toe after almost giving you a heart attack.
Ned's been teaching you how to mend the sails when you're not in the galley with Finn. He tells you tales of the time he was a traveling bard before the war. His stories were very colourful and sometimes not for the faint of heart. Who knew he had so many fans?
You've never smelt like gunpowder before, finding the powder tucked into the cloth of your clothes and sticking to your skin. The main culprit of the almost daily gunpowder bath is no other than Yuri and two fingers who took it upon themselves to teach you how to load a cannon and a musket. Under all the flirting, Yuri's a great teacher, your aim could do some work but at least now a gun isn't worthless in your hands.
At night, Miles and Pavitr would teach you about the stars and how to read maps, using it to navigate just in case you get lost. Which you hope will never happen to you. It would be a great skill to master if only you three would stop gossiping and giggling throughout the night, bellies full of tea and biscuits that Finn hides in the galley.
You find Gwen reading in the library alone from time to time. At first, you kept your distance, reading further away from her. But after a while, you notice that her favourite chair gets closer to yours until you sit side by side with her, reading quietly under a single oil lamp.
There's never a dull moment on the ship, everyone does their share of the work, and everyone gets to eat and be left to their own devices during the night. It's great, you think. You don't worry about your next meal or where you need to sleep anymore.
Your mind has never been this quiet since you left home.
Surprisingly, Hobie's been diligent at keeping your regularly scheduled injury maintenance on time. Even if you forget, he would appear out of nowhere, clutching your bag of supplies in his hands with a shit eating grin that makes you want to rip his bandage off harshly.
The brightness of the sun filtering through the large window hinders your vision a bit as you carefully take Hobie's stitches off. Your brows are knitted together, eyes full of concentration as sweat drips on your forehead. You could've done this in the infirmary but Hobie had to do a bunch of work in his cabin so you're currently doing your best at managing while he walks around the large table sat in the middle of the room. You follow him with your sutures and scissors. The sight must have been hilarious because half of the crew were chuckling and stifling a laugh.
But the moment you were finished, you threw them the nastiest glare you could muster. Shutting them all up immediately, looking away from you nonchalantly. You pretend you don't see them hiding their smiles.
Sitting down on a free chair, huffing and with your arms aching, you twist your wrists around, massaging the tired muscles with your fingers.
Miles sits next to you, a piece of paper landing right on top of your hands. Your own face stares back at you, a pencil sketch of you, face full of concentration.
“Did you draw this?” You say, surprised and with a bright grin on your face.
“No, Hobie did.” He says sarcastically but you believed him for a second. “Of course I did, it was a bit hard when you were following Hobie around like a duckling.”
“That's a compliment, ducklings are cute, Miles.” He rolls his eyes, “this is amazing though, thank you. I haven't had my likeness drawn in…never actually.”
Miles smiles, taking out a small leather bound sketchbook from his back pocket. “Prepare to be surprised then.”
He flips through it, you get glimpses of drawings from far flung sceneries, animals that you don't know the names of and faces of the crew; some familiar, some are strangers to you. But you see more of Gwen's face amidst the pages. You fight the urge to tease him, maybe you'll do that when half of the crew isn't discussing battle plans in front of you. Their faces are serious and intense as Hobie lays out figures on a map.
“You're this bored, huh?” With your elbow resting on your thigh, you watch him stop on a page.
“Look at this one” he proudly says, eyes twinkling. Showing you the pages, his hand still holding it just in case you had the audacity to flip through it yourself.
You can't believe it's your own face staring back at you.
Your eyes smile in the drawing, the unmistakable shine of happiness in them. Face turned to side, clearly looking at something. Your lips are curled up into a grin like someone just told you the funniest joke ever. The shading is expertly done by Miles, *it's like staring into a mirror, you thought. You've never seen yourself this happy.
“I'm guessing I did a good job?” He smugly says, “you're staring at it way too long, narcissus is that you?” Miles jokes, but his smile fades when he sees your eyes glistening in the sun. “Oh shit, please don't cry. Hobie's gonna kill me if I made you cry.”
You sniff, casually hiding the heat behind your eyes. “It's really good.” Chuckling, you feel a pair of eyes on your form. “Thank you, I–” exhaling, you have no idea how to properly thank him. Settling on a fist bump on his arm, you awkwardly do just that. “Thanks, you made me look prettier.”
He laughs, sighing in relief. “Nah, it was no problem. Making you look good was the hardest part.”
“You ruined it,” you scrunch up your nose, feigning annoyance. Pushing the notebook, shoving it to his chest he laughs loudly, too loud apparently when someone from the room shushes you two.
Miles winces before turning back to you. “You know what helped though? In getting your expression right?”
“No?”
“Hobie,” he says with a quick gesture towards the man. A mischievous smirk on his face. “You were talking to Hobie while I was drawing this.” Lifting the page back up, “look how happy you were!” You close the book with his fingers still inside.
Yelping, he glares at you. “I made you a portrait and this is how you thank me?”
“Shut it” your eyes roam the room, looking for someone who's eavesdropping on the conversation. Thankfully no one is. “Don't act like Gwen isn't on every page of your book.” you whisper shout at him.
“Oh so you're saying that the same feelings I have for Gwen can be translated to your feelings towards Hobie?” He teases you right back, whispering quieter. “I owe Pav a coin.”
“You little–!” He rockets away from his seat, weaving through the crew. “Come back here, Miles!” Chasing him, careful not to shove anyone, your fast footsteps echo in the hallways.
Miles yells back, gaining speed ahead of you. “I have Hobie's version too if you'd like to see it!”
“No! Fuck you! I'll tell Gwen!”
He turns heel, now running after you. Cursing, you turn around, back to where you came from. Sprinting, you both pass by Hobie's cabin lightning fast. The crew's laughter echoes out while you try to escape Miles.
Hobie can't help but crack a smile even when the topic at hand is serious and dire.
With a book in front of you, hands smelling of ink and paper, you glance at Gwen who's leaning on your side comfortably, using you as her personal backrest. You don't mind it since she snuck in hot chocolate for you.
“I've been thinking—”
“That's dangerous, don't hurt yourself.” She murmurs.
“Funny, ha ha” you laugh sarcastically. She snorts, eyes still glued on the page. “Seriously though, what's on the bow of the ship? I've only seen mermaids and the occasional angel carved on it but I've never seen one like the one here. Where in the world did Hobie even get it?”
“It's a dragon.” Gwen says without looking back at you.
“A dragon? But it doesn't have any wings though?”
She sits up, gently laying the book on her lap, looking prim and proper. “A version of it, I guess? It's popular in the east.” You listen intently so she continues. “In their stories, the dragons symbolize luck and strength, which we need now more than ever.” stretching her neck, she continues. “And Hobie traded it in exchange for our boring old siren.”
You chuckle, “What's the difference between the ones in our mythology and theirs? Other than the lack of wings and looking way cooler.”
“They say they have the power to control the weather and are big enough to swallow the moon.” you whistle out, intrigued. “Maybe after the fight we can sail over there and show you around the place?” she asks, grinning.
“I'd love that.”
You should tell her that you're not staying after the fight, but you don't want to ruin the moment or her mood. You'll tell her when you get the chance, for now, you let them focus on what's coming.
“We named him Terrence by the way.”
You giggle. “I'll be sure to greet him every morning.”
The clean water splashed on your head is a nice reprieve from the searing heat. Being the so-called ‘doctor’ on the ship, Hobie thought it would be a great idea for you to also be their designated water girl to combat heat stroke. It's easy work, reminding them to drink water and also just dumping a splash of water on the crew's head using a soup ladle. You're having fun actually, just randomly (and sneakily) pouring water over their heads whenever they complain about the heat while toiling under the sun, watching them shriek and jump from the sudden gush of water. Now they rarely complain anymore, that just means you've done a good job at keeping them all alive under the heat.
But there's one person who you haven't dumped water on yet, which with the help of Finn and his strength, you're about to remedy that.
Hobie stands near the helm, observing Pavitr sailing the ship with ease. You and Finn carry the entire barrel of half full water, (it's mostly Finn doing the work) carefully sneaking behind Hobie to dump the entire contents on him.
Before you could signal Finn to pour it on Hobie, he turns around, hands placed on his hips and a face that says: I dare you.
You freeze mid step, darting your eyes towards your little helper. Finn shrugs, subtly pointing his head towards Hobie.
“Well—?” With one strong heave of the barrel, pointing it directly towards Hobie, the water hits him with a splash, completely drenching him.
The sound gets everyone's attention, seeing their captain wet as a freshly caught fish, the roaring laughter fills the ship, pointing, hollering and whistling at their captain.
The smile on your lips fades, eyes widening when you flick your eyes downward, you've never thought a harmless prank could make your heart beat faster and for heat to rise to your cheeks. And it's not the sun that's causing that or a symptom of heat exhaustion, no, it's Hobie and his unfortunate white cotton shirt that's completely soaked through, sticking to his skin, showing off his chiseled torso. You don't dare look further down, you might not recover from what you could possibly get a glimpse of.
Hobie splutters, wiping at his wet face, water dripping from his entire body. You swallow thickly, Finn notices your sudden silence. He looks at you with narrowed eyes, head tilted like he caught your hand in the cookie jar.
You blink rapidly, “W-what?” Side eyeing Finn. He raises a brow, “What? I may not like him but I still have eyes, you know.”
“Liar.” He says in a deep voice, making you do a double take.
“Did you just—?”
“Y/N,” Hobie addresses you, eyes telling you to run. “You better not let me catch you.”
You squeak, bolting immediately. The crew guffaws loudly like they're watching the best entertainment the sea could offer. Sprinting down the stairs, hearing footsteps behind you, your old injury flares up, almost tripping you.
Hobie catches you before you could fall flat on your face. His drenched arms around your middle, his clothes squelching on your back, the water seeping through your own clothes.
“Time to walk the plank again, Scuttlebutt!” He jokes but the way he carries you towards the plank has you wiggling out, hitting his arms.
“It was a joke!” You scream. He walks closer, “a jape!” Hobie stops near the edge. “A jest!”
His laugh reverberates, you feel his chest vibrating. He cranes his neck down, whispering close to the shell of your ear. “Did you really think I'll throw you overboard?” Goosebumps rise on your skin as he blows hot air. “I'll let Finn do it instead.”
Biting your lip, hands gripping his wrists, you decide to rag him on after knowing he won't actually throw you into the shark infested waters. “yeah? Why don't you do it yourself? Be a man, captain”
Behind you, the crew continues to cheer. Pav even lets out a ‘lets go!’
Hobie chuckles deeply, squeezing you once. “You cheeky—”
The alarm bells from the crow’s nest rings out, James yells from above. “Vessel approaching! Starboard!”
Hobie lets you go, taking a telescope from a serious looking Gwen.
The blood in your veins turn into ice, holding on to the railing, you grip it as you feel your knees give out.
You can't hear what anyone is saying with blood rushing in your ears, frantic voices indistinct, igniting your nerves. Your breathing turns shallow, you try to count backwards in your head but it's no use when your hands start shaking.
“Oi,” Hobie notices your distressed expression. Rushing to your side, his voice starts getting clearer when he places his hands on your cheeks, holding you gently like you're about to break from the slight pressure from his touch.
“Breathe, yeah?” He inhales and exhales, encouraging you to do the same. You copy him, staring only at Hobie. “There, good, just breathe.” His thumbs wipe at the tears you haven't noticed letting out.
After a beat of breathing in sync, Hobie nods. “It's alright, they're allies. You don't have to be scared.” He turns you around carefully, “see? They're waving.”
Pointing at a man clad in red, white and blue, Hobie squeezes your shoulder. “That's Captain Anarchy and right next to him is his first mate, Robbie Banner. They're here to help us win the fight.”
You calm down a little once you see the crew of the other ship smile and wave at you. Trusting Hobie, you look over your shoulder, his face too close to you, breath mixing in together. Flinching, you take a step back from his hold.
He lets you go, hands sliding away from your elbows, giving you space. You look uncharacteristically small in front of him, shoulders hunched, eyes looking down at your feet.
“You're alright, Y/N.” His reassuring and soft voice echoes amidst the rowdy crew behind him.
You could only nod.
It's been chaotic since the sons of the sea arrived. They have been welcoming and kind to you, too kind, in fact that you sometimes forget that they're pirates. Especially Robbie, he always goes out of his way to help your uneasiness. He once told you during dinner with the crew that he knows how it feels to be new; and for some reason he thought that you're Hobie's lover, saying that loving a pirate captain is pretty hard work. You shut down the conversation immediately.
Finally finding a time for yourself, you stretch your aching hands, gunpowder stuck in your nostrils. Hemp and pine tar sticking under your fingernails. You've never thought that you'd be preparing for war but here you are.
After the incident, you've made yourself scarce. With preparation and between meetings, you hadn't had a chance to speak with him. Or for Hobie to even try to approach you. His wounds have healed so you don't have any reason to keep seeing each other. But you find yourself holding on to two mugs of hot chocolate, trudging the cold hallways to his cabin.
The mugs are warm in your hands, the familiarity helping with your nerves. You have no idea what to say to him, maybe a simple thank you perhaps? You didn't intend to become that vulnerable in front of him, so maybe an apology? Whatever you end up saying to him, it all has to start with a simple knock on his door which you're currently standing stiffly in front of.
Juggling two mugs in one hand, you place your knuckles on the wood. Your ears perk up at the muffled voices inside. Against better judgment, you place your ear above the door, eavesdropping on the conversation.
“—She’s not her, Hobie. I've seen how you act around her, how you look at her.” You strain your ears to hear better. “It's the same with MJ.” You blink in surprise.
“Gwen,” Hobie sighs, there's rustling on his end. “I don't like what you're insinuating.”
“I'm not insinuating anything. I'm saying this as a friend to you and to her. Don't. Just…don't” there's footsteps, “She's good for the crew, Hobie. We can't lose her.”
“I know she is.”
Gwen scoffs. “You just proved my point.”
“She's not her, I get it. Can you please go back to preparin’?”
“No, not until you get it in your thick skull.” she pauses. “She's her own person. I see it too, the similarities in their personalities. But Y/N’s not MJ.”
You almost drop the mugs.
“I know she's not MJ. I don't fancy her, I tolerate her.”
“Are you sure? Because you keep–”
His voice shakes. “MJ is gone and Y/N is Y/N. I know she's not MJ.”
Backing away from the door, emotions swirling into a dangerous concoction, face flat and lips downturned. You slowly bend down to place the mug on the side of his cabin door.
You have no idea how to react or confront it, so you just walked away. Throwing the information in the back of your mind, hoping it doesn't seep into your bones. Hope that it doesn't rot and spoil inside.
The sky is heavy with dark clouds, thunder booming like drum beats, lightning peeking out in the night. A storm is coming, you can feel it in your tendons, the smell of petrichor looming overhead, temperature dropping significantly. The fog obscuring the way doesn't help with your icy nerves. The rest of the crew battens down the windows, preparing to weather out the storm. You're not even that close to the destination and yet the sky is already preventing the ship from going further.
The sea is unusually calm despite the storm brewing ahead. A possible omen to what's to come next. You pray that you're wrong.
Shutting your window, locking it in place, you take your medical bag that's hanging from the cabin's doorknob. Making sure the door is properly closed, you head over to the deck.
You almost collide into a body, their hands holding on to your elbows.
“Woah there!” He holds you at arm's length. “You alright, doc?” His genuine smile makes the day a tad brighter.
“Captain Anarchy, hello and please don't call me that. Contrary to popular belief, I'm not actually a doctor.” You chuckle lightly.
“I won't call you doc if you don't call me captain anarchy.”
“Alright, what should I call you then?”
“Karl's fine. I'm not your captain anyway so why bother calling me captain y’know?”
You nod, “Yeah, I get it. Are you lost? These are the cabins.”
“Shit, yeah.” He scratches his head. “I swear this place is built like a maze. I'm looking for the galley actually, Finn said I can borrow some ingredients. I'm planning on cooking for everyone tonight.”
“That's really nice of you, thanks. I'll show it to you if you want?”
“That would be fantastic, thank you!”
Gesturing behind him, you lead him while he laughs at his own blunder. “Wait, Finn talked to you?”
“Mm-hmm, I've known him for a while. The secret is to talk about produce and spices then you won't be able to get him to shut up.”
“I'll keep that in mind.” You chuckle, shaking your head. Deciding to make small talk while weaving around hallways, you ask him. “How long have you been a pirate?”
He sighs, “Too fucking long.”
“Looking to retire?” you look over your shoulder, his face says it all.
“Absolutely, we're all just saving up so we could settle comfortably somewhere. Unfortunately taxes are really fucking high these days thanks to the asshole in the big chair.”
“You got that right. All these wars and sponsoring explorations got the people's coffers dry and empty.”
“Exactly! Man, Hobie really knows how to pick them, huh?” He shakes your shoulder like you're old friends. You don't flinch away, in case you offend the only ally Hobie has.
“We're not together.” you say flatly.
“That right? Sorry. Well, he did pick the right crew member then.”
“More like he fished me out of the sea.”
He laughs, the sound reminding you of a bird chirping. Karl looks at your humorless face. “Wait, seriously.”
“Yep, that's a story for another day because we're here.” you open the doors for him, showing him the galley.
“Thanks, Y/N. I owe you one.” he shoots you a friendly wink.
“Of course, just give me extra portions later.” you joke.
He chortles, “I'll save the bigger bowl for you”
Before you leave, there's a question that's unfortunately gnawing in your head.
“Can I ask you something?”
He peeks over the counter, blue eyes staring back at you. “Shoot.”
“Pardon?”
“Oh, it just means go ahead.”
“Right, uh…Did you know Hobie three years ago?” You cross your arms on your chest.
“I've known him far longer than that.”
“How was he back then?”
Karl thinks for a moment. He smiles, “Best damn pirate I've ever seen, next to me of course. He was younger, wide eyed, hungry for adventure, more than ready to take down the crown itself. Safe to say he's ambitious, he still is but—” he shakes his head. “For a different reason now.”
“Do you not think he can take down Matthias?”
“I have faith that he can and he will eventually. But I'm afraid that I'll never see that wide eyed Hobie ever again. He's gotten used to the flames, feeding it, letting it consume him. I don't think he'll be able to fight that fire after he gets what he wants.”
You clench your jaw. “What happened to MJ?”
“I don't think I'm the right person to tell you that.”
Nodding, you wordlessly thank him with a small smile.
“Wait, Y/N.” he calls for you.
“Yeah?”
“Whatever happens, help him douse the fire? For everyone's sake.”
“I— I'll do my best.”
He gives you a tight-lipped smile. “Promise me, please. I owe MJ that much.”
You exhale shakily. “I promise.”
Turning to leave, you fight with yourself. How could you make that promise when you plan to leave after Hobie wins? How do you keep that promise when you can't even look him in the eye? How do you tell Gwen and the others when their hearts are set to you staying on board?
Will it be worth it for you to leave what you currently have for someone who may not even exist?
You pause in the middle of the barren hallway, hand clutching tightly at the straps of your bag. Breathing heavily, you feel it rearing its ugly head again.
Your thoughts get interrupted by the alarm bells ringing, this time instead of curling around yourself, you decide to face it head on despite the shaking in your legs. The crew needs you, and you need them.
Crash!
The ship lunges harshly to the side, flinging you to the wall, head pounding on the hardwood.
Your vision blurs, white dots dancing, ears ringing and your head stinging from the impact.
“Fuck…” you crawl, doing your best to get up on the deck.
“They need you. Get up, lazybones.”
Hearing her voice whisper into your ear, makes you laugh coldly. You're probably concussed.
With a groan, you lift yourself up, using the wall as leverage.
With every heavy step, you straighten up, ignoring the pain in the back of your head. Walking up the steps makes you dizzy but you continue on.
Holding on to the door frame triumphantly, you reach the deck.
The fog has reached the ship, covering the entire deck in its thick mist. You notice the quiet, and the lack of movement from the crew. They all just stand stiffly, spaced away from each other. holding their weapons in their hands in a tight grip, the only indication that they're alright.
You spot Hobie in the middle of the crowd, eyes staring into the sea.
“Hobie?” You softly say. Grabbing his arm, you jump when he takes your wrist without taking his eyes off from what he's staring at.
His hand shakes, you're afraid to look.
“Y/N,” he whispers, voice cracking. “I'm sorry.”
His apology makes you follow his gaze.
The thick fog makes way for a dozen ships sailing towards you at incredible speeds, they open the lamps on their bows one by one. Like a hunter's gaze, they petrify you.
With your heart trying to escape your chest, you turn starboard, hopeful for a way out. But the sight alone would make you weep.
A larger ship looms over the revenge, its bow crashed on the side of the now splintered wood of the ship. The navy ship is Gilded and pristine, decorated with carvings of asphodels. The crowned angel with her wings spread out on the bow looks down at you through her wooden eyes.
Hobie clutches on to you tighter, scowling, shaking in sheer anger.
A menacing laugh echoes into the eerie silence.
You're surrounded.
