Hello, I'm here as said I would. I've got a few questions. What magic(s) does everyone specialize in/study? Are glyphs back and in use? What were the inspirations for making the fankids the way they are?

Everyone's magic is as follows (and I'll be answering question 2 with that!):

Carmilla: Oracle/Abominations (they're both purple, they're both spooky, and she has a natural talent for Oracle magic while also having been taught Abominations since she was a kid)

Mickey: Bard/Beastkeeping/Illusions (they freaking love music, they freaking love animals, and they freaking love messing with people)

Evan: Healing/Construction (the first one highlights his belief that magic is a tool to help others, and the second one highlights his love for building things)

Lila Rose: Plants/Potions/Oracle (she's naturally gifted at Plants like her mom, she has a keen interest in alchemy, and Oracle magic is as close as she can get to legal necromancy)

Heather: Oracle/Healing (it helps to plan things if you can see the future, and she fully intends on being a doctor someday)

Hector: Bard/Illusions (the two tracks that are often underestimated yet are all about showmanship and not underestimating your opponent? Sign him up!)

Holland: They of course can't use magic organically, but thankfully, the magic of the glyphs has returned thanks to King! Just like their aunt Luz, they see no reason to restrict themselves and dabble in a little of everything.

Jayla: Potions/Abominations (she's never minded getting her hands a little bit messy, and both tracks encourage her to think creatively on the field and in real life)

Silas: Abominations/Construction (two tracks that are some of the physically strongest and are the most useful in a fight)

And as for the inspirations, well...

Carmilla is, obviously, inspired in part by Carmilla---both the classic novella and the fantastic webseries that shares its name. I've noticed a lot of "main" Lumity fankids, i.e. either only children or oldest children, who primarily take after Luz, and while that's incredible to see, I feel like we're kind of missing out on the chance to do one who primarily takes after Amity. Mickey kinda just... sprouted from my imagination, really, I'm still not sure how I landed on them. Their design and personality just popped into my brain.

Evan is named after both Evelyn and Evan Kelmp from Dimension 20's Misfits & Magic series, who is a character that absolutely radiates Hunter vibes (the pitch for his character was "kid who was born to be the Dark Lord and wants absolutely nothing to do with that"). In personality, however, he's primarily inspired by Palamedes from The Locked Tomb, which I thought would fit well for a Huntlow kid. And Lila Rose... I did make her with the idea that she'd mostly take after Willow in terms of personality, but I also loved the thought of a Huntlow kid just being weird. She and Evan are both part Grimwalker, after all. (Plus, I love the mad scientist aesthetic too much to let it die with Philip. His crazy dark cottagecore great-niece can figure out how to use what he learned for good, just to rub it in.)

Heather and Hector were actually originally gonna be Jayla's younger siblings---with Gustholomule being the couple that has no kids but a plethora of pets---but I've seen a lot of really cool fics and fanart of Gus and Matt breaking up and then getting back together due to there being kids in the picture and rebuilding a healthier relationship as a result of that, and... I dunno. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense---of course Gus and Matt, two characters who struggle with anxiety and not being good enough, would have a daughter who's a born overachiever and needs everything to be perfect. And of course Gus and Matt, two characters who have a flair for the dramatic yet tend to hide their inner struggles behind the flash and the confidence, would have a son who's a born thespian and is still learning how to step back from the theatrics and just be real. It just works.

Holland... again, I'm not entirely sure. They're essentially what happens when two incredibly kind alt people raise a kid. I knew that I wanted someone to round out Evan and Carmilla's friend group, and their personality and backstory just sprung from there.

With Jayla, well... I've seen some Skarey fankids who are more femme-leaning, but again, partially inspired by my love for The Locked Tomb, I decided that I wanted Jayla to be butch. And seeing as both of her moms were athletes, I figured that it wouldn't be too unusual for her to be, too. The rest of her personality kinda sprung up around there.

Silas came to me pretty much immediately---I knew that I wanted him to be an entitled popular kid who eventually shifts into a snarky common sense friend a la David Rose or Wallace Wells, and I knew that I wanted him and Evan to be rivals-to-lovers. At the same time, though, I didn't want Boscha to be a bad mom, and I eventually settled on her trying her best but also just not being in a good place mentally, which would absolutely fuel Silas's need to make her happy.

Also, I should clarify---Silas and Evan are not a story of "bully meets victim." The two of them are on equal footing, and their rivalry is based on pure academic pettiness and clashing worldviews. Both of them are dicks to each other, and both of them have instances of needing to grow as people before they can even consider each other friends.

Was trawling back through my AO3 history and I started deleting deleted fics, which reduced the page count by like, 20 before I’d even gotten a 200 pages back from the oldest entries, so this is your reminder to check out and regularly use @nianeyna‘s ao3 downloader!!

(all gods bless you for sharing that, for serious, especially the pinboard functionality as apparently I AM a fandom dinosaur which is hilarious and somewhat inspirational at the same time)

(I am having some difficulties now finding and downloading the stuff I missed because it isn’t bookmarked on Pinboard from the AO3, only from LJ or whatever, which is why I started trawling my history in the first place and huh it looks like for the first few years I only left kudos when my head had been practically blown off, unlike my current categorizing system of ‘seen - tried, didn’t like’, ‘kudosed - read, liked’, ‘pinned to pinboard - read, liked enough to re-read’, ‘bookmarked on ao3 - read and holy shit i need a quick link to this fucker so i can read it again immediately on demand, and/or oh hey! series!’)

D&D as Disability Metaphor

N.B. Most of the ideas herein about spell slots/cantrips and mana/health points were sourced from various tumblr posts; please reblog with links if you have them! Also reblog with additional links to those tumblr posts about forks and knives!

In this metaphor, YOU are a D&D/RPG character!

Your CHARACTER BUILD reflects your strengths and weaknesses. 

First: you have your basic STATS – INT, CON, WIS, DEX, STR, CHA – these are primarily determined by your baseline nature and your early nurture. (e.g., you may be born with a certain facility for learning, a natural sense of balance, perfect pitch, etc., or you may have spent much of your life playing sports and building strength and dexterity, or have been forced by circumstance to become Very Good at identifying people’s true motives and/or playing the part you need to play in any given situation, etc.)

Secondly: You have your basic ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES. These are primarily determined by your baseline nature but can be affected by nurture and change over time just as you do! 

For example, you may be vision impaired – any task requiring good vision will have you at a natural disadvantage that can be mitigated by the use of an accessory or tool. So long as you have your accommodation, your natural disadvantage is entirely or partially nullified – instead of a negative 3 to skill checks involving vision, you might have a modifier of only negative 1 or even zero!

Another example: 

You might be autistic or have other sensory processing issues that mean certain textures are ILLEGAL – any time you’re required to interact with that texture, you have to roll a WIS save to see how it impacts you. 

On a bad day (in the metaphor, you roll a 1), you might be completely incapacitated for a time. On a good day, you might be able to use a positive modifier from a learned skill like DISTRESS TOLERANCE or DISENAGE to overcome the badness and only be partially incapacitated, or maybe not even incapacitated at all, just inflicted with a DEBUFF of some kind for a period of time. (This gives you a negative modifier for future skill checks and saving throws until the debuff expires or you take a LONG REST.)

On any given day, your disability (physical, mental, developmental, etc.) may give you a GENERAL DEBUFF that affects your skill checks and saving throws. 

For example, if you have bipolar disorder and are in a depressive episode, you might have a negative 1 modifier to any social interaction, even if ‘normally’ you have a plus 3. 

Or you might have chronic migraines and be having a debilitating headache that actually precludes the use of some skills/spells/actions at all – you might be incapable of leaving a dark room or of using your computer/phone.

Thirdly: In general, you can think of your overall capability to COPE as mana points, stamina points, spell slots, or anything similar. SPELL SLOTS is the easiest metaphor, just because of how the magic system is structured.

You have a given number of SPELL SLOTS on any single day, although a DEBUFF might reduce your baseline of slots for the day or a BUFF might actually give you an extra one! These spell slots correspond to the energy needed to perform various activities/tasks. The more difficult the task, the higher level of spell slot is required. BUT! If you’ve already used your third level spell slot for the day and need to “cast” another third level spell (another difficult activity), you can sacrifice multiple lower level spell slots in order to do so, with the disadvantage of having fewer slots left until your next LONG REST.

Some activities don’t drain you at all and can be done at any time (in this metaphor, they can be considered CANTRIPS). Some might even return used spell slots! (Think of this as taking a SHORT REST.) CANTRIPS are typically less effort or are of such benefit that they cancel out the level of effort required. They vary wildly based on the individual. An example for one person might be listening to an audiobook or taking a hot shower, while a different person might consider both of those first level spells.

Finally: The final part of this metaphor switches genres a little bit, so bear with me. This doesn’t tend to happen in the most well-known tabletop RPGs, but you’ve probably seen it in other popular media. Sometimes, you’re completely out of spell slots / mana / stamina, but you’ve got something you absolutely HAVE to do – either because it’s a necessity for your survival, or because you simply care about the thing so much that you’re willing to borrow against your future self.

In this kind of situation, you can ‘borrow’ spell slots from your future self (meaning you use it now, and therefore don’t have it available to use the next day), or you might start using your own health points in place of the missing mana. 

Think about in fantasy media, when the magic user runs out of magic in the FINAL BATTLE and starts sacrificing their own life force to continue powering the spell. In some circumstances, they might drain themselves so completely that they can never use magic again, or it takes them years to recover. Similarly, a person with CFS who pushes themselves too hard one day might end up bedbound for days, weeks, or even months following. 

Another example: 

Someone with a torn ACL who stresses it during the healing process might find that it never heals completely/properly, permanently affecting their athletic ability.

TL;DR – D&D is actually a great extended metaphor for both short-term and long-term disabilities and how they impact a person’s life! 

But it does. Uh. Require some background in RPG terms and tropes in order to fully understand it. If the person you’re trying to explain the concepts to is completely unfamiliar with RPGs, you may be better off with sticking with something more basic like Spoon* Theory (or the Unified Cutlery** Theory).

Tfw you're working on your Star Wars Fanart only to get distracted by an Ever After High AU for a movie from 2012. Anyways here's my OCS in a Pitch Perfect AU! (Plus some canon Fanart aka scene redraws for movies 1 & 2.)

In the AU, Arion takes the role of Beca (because they're basically the same character it's seriously uncanny whoops), while Rose and Anteros take the roles of Chloe and Jesse, respectively, with some minor alterations (they occasionally swap places as needed for the narrative cause Rose is much closer to Jesse personality-wise but I needed the final serenade to go like the original otherwise what even is the point so i couldn't just swap them permanently). Arion and Rose are in a mixed-gender group called the Fairy Tones, while Anteros ends up in an all-masc group called the Charming Chords. There's also a third rival group called the Twister Misters but they don't really do much. As for the drawings themselves, they're basically just redone scenes from the movies, like the aca-initiation featuring a Tempis cameo (it's fruit punch Rose swears), the scene from the radio station where Jesse (now Rose cause all three of them work there) uses the various album covers to try to make Beca laugh (and very nearly succeeds not that she'd ever admit it) (Anteros thinks it's funny but Arion thinks they've all gone absolutely batty), and of course the iconic Fist Pump from the end, featuring a bonus Kenni in the Benji role! (Tho actually I'm toying with Andre-as-Benji cause then he and Arion could be Besties™ and i could have an easy segue into an Andre and Rose B-plot. But I digress.)

As for the canon drawings, i just did some favorite scenes, like the picnic (he has juices pouches and Rocky! How could anyone not love him?!) And the audition (still one of the funniest scenes in the movie tbh as far as individual lines from characters go, excellent introduction of personalities). Also that part of the riff off from the sequel cause a) Anna Kendrick KILLED it with Before He Cheats, and b) i was mildly offended we didn't get a Live Slug Jesse Reaction shot because I'm absolutely certain his expression would've been hysterical (mostly in how... Not scared he'd look 😂)

Also also, i think these kids should meet; Beca and Arion could silently judge people together to their hearts content, while Jesse and Rose would immediately launch into French serenades with zero hesitation. (Also Beca is wearing a Trebles Hoodie cause i know what I'm about.)

Author's summary:

Beca is going to save her relationship. She is.

In the privacy of her own head she can admit that things have been… not great between her and Luke these last few weeks (months). There was nothing specific she could point to. No big fights or anything. Just a growing distance. Which is how she finds herself into her sexiest lingerie - thought barely deserving of the name - and then into her car and driven four hours to surprise him, things do not go to plan.

Bemily Week 2022 Day 2 - Enemies to Lovers

My notes:

This is one of the things I love so much about fanfiction. This is clearly Beca, a character I know and love, but in a slightly different universe and in a situation, I have not seen her in before.

The setup is a bit cracky. Not so much in the crazy, funny kind of chacky, but a bit more the cringy, "oh god, girl, what are you doing" kind of chracky.

Beca is together with Luke (WTF, you might think), but thankfully we neither get to see a lot of Luke and their relationship in this fic (don’t worry that the fic is also tagged Beca/Luke), nor a lot of Luke/Emily, as this is a Beca centric fic and told exclusively from her POV.

The fic is very well written and Beca's characterization is spot on. Wonderful fic, a masterpiece, highly recommended.

On autopilot Beca offers back her own hand, "Beca."

Behind her she hears, in a soft whisper "... Beca… "

The entire situation is fucked sixteen hundred different ways from Sunday, but the absolute stupidest part of it is that Beca never actually introduced herself. Completely insane.

BECHLOE WEEK DAY 1: REUNION

Beca checked her phone again.

No new messages from Chloe since the “just got out of the plane heading towards u now” from approximately 20 minutes ago. It had been almost a year since the two had seen each other in person because Beca had started working with DJ Khaled and moved to LA. Leaving Chloe in their, now her, small New York apartment. The two FaceTimed and texted as much as their busy schedules allowed, but it wasn’t the same as being together in person. Luckily, they’ll be together soon. Beca’s waiting in the airport pick up area for her. Waiting for her best friend.

Beca’s phone buzzes on her thigh, breaking her from her thoughts.

ONE NEW MESSAGE FROM ‘CHLO ❤️’

She clicks on the notification, “I see you ur car walking over”

Beca quickly gets out of the car. As she rounds around the back of the car she sees a familiar redhead about 20 feet away. She’s dressed in a gray faded Braden University crew neck with green collar and cuffs, pink running shorts, and white converse that look like they’ve certainly been worn a bit.

Before Beca can even process that Chloe was here, in LA, HER Chloe, the woman in question runs toward her with her suitcase, stops it next to her, and throws her arms over Beca’s shoulders. She quickly returns the hug by holding her close by the waist and burrowing her head in between Chloe’s neck and shoulder. A few moments pass by, the two simply standing there with their arms around each other.

“I’ve missed you so much, Becs.” Chloe whispers into the other woman’s hair.

Beca tightens her hold on her and replies;

“I’ve missed you, too. Way more than you could ever know.”
