Bring me the head of Caesar! Detailed 1:6 custom/knockoff head. Nicely done. Sadly doesn’t fit inside the helmet of my yellow space suit.

Name: Astro-Apes: Warrior Ape, Artemus, Myra and Dr Zorma License: Knock-Off of Planet of the Apes  Manufacturer: United Manufacturing Company, HK (inflatables: Dan Brechner, Taiwan) Year: 1970s Material: plastic, fabric clothing (inflatables: vinyl) Height: 8” (inflatables: 3”) Type: action figures, mini inflatables
Astro-Apes! I wish this had been an animated series! It took a long time to assemble this family of rare British PotA knock-off characters—now my set is complete. Artemus and the Warrior Ape came as disintegrated shards of plastic inside dry-rotted clothes. I replaced the bodies and cleaned and resewed their outfits. The face sculpts are kinda great—cartoony, but detailed.
The Warrior Ape has a Flash Gordon helmet and jumbo ray gun. Artemis totes a mysterious tiny briefcase. Myra wears a yellowish space flower in her hair. Dr Zorma sports professorial glasses. And they’re all rocking their brown galactic pleather.
The header card features character art with an 8th-grade notebook feel and lets you know their names (collect them all!).
The Astro-Apes are probably the only knock-off toy line to have spin-off licensed mini inflatable versions. Assorted colors, full-body illustrations. You can often find these (and other great stuff) at I Had That Toy.

Really nice head sculpt, captures Cornelius’ thoughtful glare. The only Medicom wind-up I have—part of the set that came out with the Tim Burton ape film. Cornelius, Soldier Ape & General Ursus from the originals; Attar & Thade from the 2001 version.

Name: Simple Simian Platform: Hairy Scareys Manufacturer: Knickerbocker Year: 1970s Material: cloth, plush fur hair Height: 9” Type: plush
Knickerbocker created a set of cloth doll monsters with hair, possibly as amusement prizes. It included a vampire: Count Drooly, a werewolf: Wacky Wolfie, a Frankenstein’s monster: Frankie Baby and this ape-like ogre: Simple Simian. It’s very Dr Zaius with a colorful Soldier Ape costume.

Name: Planet of the Apes Mini Epics—Dr Zaius, Zira and Cornelius  Manufacturer: Weta Workshop License: Planet of the Apes (1968) Year: 2018 Material: vinyl Height: 5 1/2” Type: vinyl figures
The apes join Weta Workshop’s line of stylized vinyl figures—Mini Epics—in time for the PotA 50th anniversary. Designer and sculptor Mauro Santini captures Zira, Cornelius and Zaius’  expressive personalities, in the sculpts and the great box art. They have the feel of maquettes for an Adult Swim animated series that may have happened in an ape alternate timeline. Check out Weta’s other cool ape products here.

Name: Lobby Card: Zira and Cornelius hearing scene, signed by Kim Hunter Film: Escape from the Planet of the Apes Studio: 20th Century Fox Year: 1971 Size: 14" x 11" Type: autographed lobby card
The fateful hearing scene on present-day earth (in Escape from the Planet of the Apes) when Zira lets slip that apes will be superior to humans in her future. It was all downhill from there.
Signed by Zira herself—Kim Hunter! A highlight of my ape room wall.

Name: Maurice, Caesar & Bad Ape License: War for the Planet of the Apes Platform: Pop! Movies Manufacturer: Funko Year: 2017 Material: vinyl Height: 3” Articulation: 1 point (neck) Type: vinyl figures
Bad Ape! My new favorite character in the current Ape films. Finally an ape who wears clothes and has a sense of humor! All 3 characters in Funko’s WftPotA line look good (though Caesar is a little too pale). The movie is the best of the new series—but needed a major female ape with the spirit (and screen time) of Zira.

A cool custom Ceasar Pop! in his warpaint from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes by Cool Guy Custom (5rhodds on ebay—couldn’t find a website or instagram). Wooden spear in hand. Funko never did Rise or Dawn Pops, so I’m glad I found this!

Too cute? Good to see Funko expanding their Apes line into Dorbz. Only got these two, no Taylor (no room for humans).

Name: Gorilla Soldier Wind-Up License: knockoff of Planet of the Apes Manufacturer: ? Year: 1990s Material: plastic, metal mechanism Height: 3” Type: wind-up toy
From a series of great knockoff windups of many licenses I used to see at the old Toy Tokyo location in the 90s. I bought a brown Yoda back them but wish now I got all the ape variations they had too. The sculpt is similar to the official AHI 70s wind-ups, but more refined. This one popped up on ebay.
