Digimon Frontier - Episode 39

DIGIMON. IN. SPAAAAACE. -echo- space~ space~

A filler-ish episode, but a decent one. I was really confused for the first 5 minutes or so lol. Didn't expect them to end up on the moon.

Has this franchise gone to space yet? I honestly don't remember. There have been a lot of void-like spaces and fighting midair so it kinda feels like that's happened already. (Sorry if I'm being dumb and forgetting something really obvious lol)

Notes:

Lol they really tried to tell me that that slightly whiter Gotsumon was "Insekimon..." riiight. (If you look at the concept art in the wiki, one of their distinguishing features is one faces the left and the other faces the right lmao). The dub did the right thing and was like "nah, that's Gotsumon." I would have at least preferred if they called them MeteorGotsumon or something. (Wait, are meteors even white?)

So if the digital world is parallel to our world, does the moon in this episode imply that the digital universe is also parallel? Like, are there other planets aside from the digital world one that mirror our planets? I need the lore!

The sub version had some really unfitting guitar/rock music playing in the background where Koichi was just kinda walking around. (I get that's probaly his theme or something but it was awkward). The dub's music seemed to fit a lot better.

SuperStarmon was cute. I like his American fringe lol. In the dub he was yet another Elvis parody (I get why, but pick another impression for once!)

Their attempts to jump back to the digital world were played for laughs but I was actually scared for them lol. That's dangerous!

Wtf kinda high level calculus was Junpei doing when calculating how to get back? Sure, it didn't work, but how does he even know about that at his age!?

Random thing to fixate on, but I wonder where Japan came across the English phrase "hop step jump?" Tomoki uses it in this episode and I've heard it in a ton of anime by now.

What exactly is Lucemon's strategy here? "Let's destroy the planet that I want to rule." Whaa...? Is there even going to be anything left for him to rule? The royal knights apparently are aiming for the human world (that kinda came outta nowhere, but okay).

I learned watching this episode that "pachinko" means "slingshot." Fun fact of the day!

They had the whole cast sing one of the insert songs in the sub this time. I always love it when anime do that :) such a nice touch

Princess Glimmer and the Day of Many Choices: The power of her hair and this knife she just found (7/?)

"Hiiiii there," Entrapta said brightly and smiled at the gun-wielding clone.

"DIE IN THE NAME OF PRIME!" the clone cried and pressed the trigger. Nothing happened.

"Now thiiiis is an elegant fireing mechanism," Entrapta said in conversational tone, lovingly looking at a small module she had just removed from the gun with a small screwdriver held in her hair.

"WHAT TRICKERY IS THIS?" the clone yelled and reached for his blaster… which was nowhere to be found.

"Oooooh! I love me a good blaster," Entrapta went on. "How does the signal amplifier work…? Never mind, I'll figure it out." she flipped down her velder's mask and descended on the blaster with an alarming amount of soldering irons.

"YOU ARE NO MATCH FOR HORDE PRIME'S HOLY HANDGRANADES!" the clone yelled and reached for a predictably empty granade bag.

"Ehehehehe! What an exciting chemical component. Is it flammable?"

"I WILL KILL YOU WITH ONLY A KNIFE!" the clone yelled and rushed forward, knife in hand. Entrapta brightly looked up and with no effort whatsoever plucked the knife from his hand with a strand of hair.

"Oooooh! Free knife!" she said. "I totally found it."

"MY BARE HANDS AND THE COURAGE OF HORDE PRIME IS ALL I NEED TO… hey!" the clone said as Entrapta suddenly towered above them, raised on her hair,

"I like your armour," she said, a slightly bloodthirsty smile. "I have to see how it works.

"Now, wait just a minute," the clone protested as Entrapta descended on him and with disturbingly x movements cut him out of his armour."

"Thaaaanks," Entrapta said and happily sat down to study the armour pieces, as the clone finally decided to run away.

A pink cloud of sparkles formed, and Glimmer, Bow and Adora emerged.

"Hi Entrapta," Glimmer said. "Are there any clones here?"

"None that I have seen," Entrapta cheerfully answered. "Look! micro-electronics."

"Yes, very nice," Glimmer said with distracted tone as Bow eagerly stepped forward to look at the armour pieces. "Frosta is free from the chipping, so well done. We have driven off most of the clones…"

"I helped!" Adora beamingly said and held up a blaster.

"Yes, Adora, well done," Glimmer said, which made Adora perk up like a dog hoping for head-pats.

"…so now it's time to stop playing defensive," Glimmer went on, eying the transporter pad with a calculating look.

in case it wasn't obvious I am a huge Bethesda nerd

I know I shouldn't get excited. I know that the studio cannot possibly deliver on all of its wild promises in one slick marketing video. But... dammit... I can't stop thinking about S T A R F I E L D 😭

I have been playing Bethesda games since Skyrim came out in 2011, and it was an experience that has never been replicated. I LIVED in that world for ages (still do, on occasion)! Then I added some mods and played even more. And when I finally, finally exhausted everything after multiple playthroughs, I went back into the catalogue and immersed myself in Fallout 3, Fallout 4, New Vegas (ok Vegas was another studio, but it's the same engine) Morrowind, Oblivion... eh, maybe not Oblivion, I didn't like it as much.

In any case I played the hell out of these games. I created a lovable cast of recurring characters and archetypes across every game so that I could experience all sides of these fictional worlds. I made little Peter Lorre clones as best I could:

And now Bethesda has a new open-world game which promises to be everything that the Elder Scrolls and Fallout were, but IN SPAAAAACE! And meanwhile I am left sitting here vibrating with anticipation until September and hating myself for it. I shouldn't be fooled by wild promises! I know the game is going to be so jank on release it's going to be unplayable for weeks. It's a sacred Bethesda tradition.

But... but I must build my own spaceship! I want to gather resources and build the most fabulous mining colonies on other worlds and get stinking rich doing it. I want to be a space pirate and hijack other spacecraft and steal everything not nailed down while charming the pants off everyone. I want to roleplay as one of Peter Lorre's far-flung fictional descendants, like some manner of endlessly rebirthed ghola, for fun and profit. I want to capture alien creatures and showcase them on a poorly-secured Jurassic Park- style planet and charge money for admission (okay I don't actually know if that last one can be done, but I still want my dangerous alien creature zoo). I want to test out all the different character builds and traits for roleplay and skill checks--I want to know if the character creation models allow me to finally create a fat character, not merely thick or muscular but really, properly big bellied and FAT so that Torg can actually look like he feasts on the world??!

It's... really easy for me to get lost in fictional worlds. I'm already planning the kinds of stories and characters I want to play, and the damn game isn't even out yet. Halp meh

superhero au!

Superhero au.

Virgil is a supervillain a la that post about grad school villains. He started out doing it for extra credit but he also needed the cash for student loans...that shit aint cheap yo

so he’s a small-scale “”””supervillain””” mostly making a nuisance of himself by stopping traffic, doing minor vandalism in costume, and sometimes kidnapping notables for like an hour before realizing he can’t keep a plant alive and should not be in charge of a person (’you’ve captured me!! what are you going to do???’ ‘eh i mean you’ll probably get rescued soon, my powers aren’t really meant for long-term kidnapping and I don’t wanna have to take care of you. you think i want another mouth to feed? nah. hey wanna see a meme?’).

(if Sleep exists in this au he’s a common kidnapping victim. son of the mayor or smth. Virgil has learned to hold up a starbucks before kidnapping him tho. not worth it if he can’t bribe him with sweet sweet caffeine. they p much chill for a couple hours until the hostage negotiators come)

basically, Virgil’s not a big enough deal to get shut down permanently. regular cops usually take care of him well enough without superhero involvement. he gets his extra credit for villainry and sometimes some cash from a shadowy organization via crow or some shit. he’s not sure how they know where he lives or what exactly they’re paying him for but hey, more ramen money. whatever gets food on the table.

On the other hand, Patton is a hard-working police officer who really should be in any other job. He’s just too nice for it. But he gets a lot of the suicide calls or emotional trauma stuff because he’s just so damn good at making people feel safe, and no one else wants to do those calls, so he stays on the force. He used to be an EMT, too, which is really helpful. He rooms with Virgil and Logan and Virgil’s weird cousin.

He pretends to be unaware of Virgil’s extracurriculars because he can see that Virgil needs the money and is too proud to ask for help. He does help him patch himself up when necessary and sometimes thinks about going back to his own ‘night job.’

(he used to be a superhero but quit that and EMTing after he realized how much it was draining him physically and emotionally and how deeply unhealthy the whole thing was. credit to Logan for that) He thinks he’d feel better knowing Virgil’s already spoken for as an archnemesis by a hero who won’t seriously try to hurt him. He seriously worries that Virgil will catch the attention of an edgy ‘shoot first and angst about it but make no attempts to fix the mess you’ve made later’ heroes, and he’ll end up in the hospital or worse.

but also, Patton needs that work/life balance and he just can’t maintain it while hero-ing. and Virgil knows what he’s doing, right? he’s a cautious guy. So Patton just tries to be on call when he notices Virgil’s got the first aid kit out or when he talks about ‘evening plans’ (fuck’s sake dude we all know you don’t go out for fun).

For his part, Logan wanted to be a biochemical engineer, but right now he’s taking some time off school. His powers are probably some sort of sensory (?) and he doesn’t fully understand them himself, mostly bc he likes to pretend they don’t exist. but he was getting splitting headaches at school and he just couldn’t go on. He does online courses when he can but he feels really ashamed that he couldn’t do grad school/college, which he was supposed to be good at. He was planning on staying with Patton and Virgil until the end of the lease and he doesn’t know what he’ll do after that.

But then one day Virgil came home freaking the fuck out about something and asked to talk to him, and guess what, he’s got this crazy ‘supervillain for extra credit’ idea. Someone’s got to make sure this fool doesn’t get himself killed. And Patton’s got into police work, and Logan doesn’t want him to go through compassion exhaustion again, and really none of his dumb housemates can take care of themselves (he loves them tho). So he does mad science in the broom closet to try to give Virgil something of an edge over any hero whose attention he might catch and helps him hide his villain-ing from Patton and tries to figure out what he’s gonna do with his life on the side.

He comes up with this crazy graph that shows the optimal balance of super heroes to villains in a healthy society (not enough villains=not enough active heroes when something really bad goes down, as it does every few years, somehow; not enough heroes=obviously bad). He keeps an eye on superpowered activity in the city.

Sometimes he thinks about getting active himself, both to preserve order and balance (if you’re the villain [ie Virgil] you can control the collateral damage to your plots, but if you’re the hero and your roommate is the villain you can both work together to provide for both of your needs [extra credit, enough good hero/villain balance, and safety of roommate] without actually harming anyone...but for either he would need to be able to use his powers effectively and he’s still kind of in denial), and to keep Virgil from getting his fool ass killed, and to keep an eye on Patton while Patton insists on running right into every single superpowered crime scene. In the meantime, he frets over numbers and helps Virgil write coded emails to his grad board about his ‘’’extensive’’’ villainry.

It’s basically like a resume except you have to convince the people involved that you’re super evil.

Logan is good at resumes.

All three of them are plugging right along and Virgil’s actually getting his student loans paid on time with enough money for food and rent besides (one day he even takes them out to eat and they Do Not Talk about how he got the money to do that), and they all think maybe he can do the villain thing for a few more years and then get out of the game forever, when Virgil’s weird cousin gets caught doing some shady-ass stuff.

Turns out he’s in way over his head with some sketchy folks, owes a lot of people money, and used Virgil’s name for half of it. Virgil is in sudden desperate need of more money than he can get through legal means and, of course, Refuses to tell anyone about/ask for help with his predicament. It is strongly recommended to him by his academic adviser that he step up his supervillain game or show up at the bottom of a river south of Manhattan.

Virgil freaks the fuck out and proceeds to dig himself into an even deeper hole, suddenly going for much larger schemes, robbing banks, being less obsessively careful about collateral damage with each plot because he just doesn’t have time to and he’s too desperate.

Cue Roman.

Roman was literally just going to the bank, innocent of all wrongdoing and Not Picking a Fight because he swears this new move is gonna work out, he’s not gonna get arrested to aggravated assault or unauthorized use of an unregistered superhuman ability (it was self-defense! and defense of others! he was rescuing people!).

He happens to be at the bank when Virgil is robbing it. And, well, Virgil isn’t gonna hurt anyone, but Roman doesn’t know that. He ties his shirt over his face to hide his identity and superheros it up, saves the day; Virgil runs away pretty significantly battered but not permanently injured or caught. And now there’s a new superhero in town and Virgil suddenly has an archnemesis. Just what he was avoiding. Great.

Meanwhile, Roman is shocked to learn that he’s being applauded for saving people for once (as opposed to like. arrested) and graciously accepts his new title. Hey, being a superhero could work! He said he was gonna try something new in this town and he will! He’s gonna save the day!

The two of them happily counter each other day after day: Virgil’s getting enough publicity as a villain that his grad board is happy even without him doing any genuine harm, he’s staying one step ahead of the shady figures that come looking for him by name, Patton has made contact once or twice with the new hero and used his office reputation to become Roman’s primary police contact, Logan thinks Virgil is bonkers for all the new levels of villainy he’s doing but he has to admit this is the most alive he’s ever seen him; Roman is enjoying the fame and adoration of being a hero and he’s been cast in a musical and life is looking up for everyone.

But Roman also works in a coffee shop to pay the bills (three jobs. so tired.) and there’s this stressed-looking student who keeps coming in with bruises and sprains and one time he broke his arm in what Roman is absolutely certain wasn’t an accident, and he talks on the phone with people sometimes that really seem to distress him, and he seems like a genuinely nice guy, right? A little guarded, sure, but he’s polite and he tips well and what kind of hero would Roman be if he didn’t at least try to make friends with this troubled but charming young man?

So Roman introduces himself to Virgil in their civilian identities and the two of them are friendly! free coffee here, book recommendation there, on slow days Roman will sit with Virgil and they’ll just chill for a while. Each of them quietly considers the other his friend, but Roman is Concerned about how Virgil is so fucking jumpy, keeps getting these calls that he claims are from his academic adviser but honestly what kind of adviser would be so terrible to talk to, he has all these bruises that show up continuously and his excuses are all plausible, realistic, and backed by evidence provided by Virgil himself, but something just doesn’t seem right.

So when Virgil mentions that his cousin suddenly moved out in the middle of the lease and he needs to find a new roommate and can he post a flyer in the coffee shop? Roman jumps at the opportunity. He’s been renting one room by the month in a shitty part of town and this is a hell of an upgrade, and also, maybe that nagging in the back of his head when Virgil shows up battered will go away. (maybe if he’s there no one will hurt Virgil. what monster would bring deliberate harm onto such a genuinely nice, snarky guy, wonders the superhero who brawls him on the regular)

He’ll have to keep his superhero-ing on the DL from his new roommates (though he’s thinking about telling Virgil, because Virgil seems like he can keep a secret and Roman really wants to have someone to talk to about this), but unlike Virgil, Roman knows how to use strategic stage makeup to hide bruises and minor imperfections. Also, his villain must be kind of weak, because he never seems to do too much damage? Sometimes Roman thinks he doesn’t really want to be a villain, he’s just kind of sad and lonely, like Megamind. Thoughts for another time.

So now, in one apartment, we have:

Patton, former EMT; former superhero of respectable fame; currently a cop assigned to Roman’s superhero persona and also any calls involving emotional competence; knows Virgil is a supervillain but pretends not to; responds immediately to all calls involving superpowers in case it’s his deeply misguided roommate and he needs help;

Logan, one accident away from becoming a super-something if only he could figure out what; provider of Virgil’s biochemical defenses for when superpowers alone are not enough; helping to cover both logistics and material needs for supervillainy (also created Virgil’s outfit because you can’t do crime in a hoodie you heathen, no one will take you seriously, Virgil had to talk him down from including a necktie); searching for his place in life; not entirely certain why Virgil is stepping up his illegal activities but not happy about it; currently househusband to all of his roommates;

Virgil, extremely stressed grad student; villain for fun and profit and mostly because he needs the money to not get murdered; a bit of an adrenaline junkie; really staring to get into this villain thing but he sometimes wishes he didn’t have to be the bad guy; definitely feeling hunted by shadowy entities and organizations and trying desperately not to bring anyone down with him;

and Roman, the hero. who is beginning to think he and his villain might have been friends, in another life.

It is both a sitcom and a shitshow of epic proportions while everyone tries to hide each other’s secrets without letting ppl know what they know, Roman comes clean to Virgil and Virgil freaks the fuck out about it, Patton frets about everyone and everything until he’s stressing himself sick, Logan makes chemical explosions in the broom closet and the whole block is evacuated every other Tuesday and they all have to pretend not to know about it, Roman wants to get a dog and also for Virgil to get out of whatever abusive relationship he’s Clearly In, Virgil wants a nap, Patton wants a nap, they all want a nap.

What I’m saying is: Superhero au.

continuing my train of thought from here. im imagining all the ways they might be moving around each other here:

theres a battle for dominance of course but thats far from the only thing i think for these two at this point thats like, the background chatter, they do the dominance displays in their sleep it’s their relaxing theyre basically just dancing at this point. theyve got a whole entire like

but then in addition to that theres this big looming spectre of H O M E in this scene/between them in general. i think thats gonna influence the way the master looks. and hes very hurt and i dont think he’d try to hide that. i havent watched s12 in a while so im not sure if i agree with what im about to say or if i come back on it next time i rewatch but i think it might be interesting if 13 can See that hes in pain, and she engages with his performance anyway. there are probably so many reasons that would be underneath that decision, like

1) she respects their mutual performance enough to engage only with the script, not with anything else she might be seeing

2) the fact that hes in pain and hes doing this to deal with it is as much proof as him like, returning to his former habits, as the ‘im just evil ive never been good’ that he tries to sell her is.

i had some more points to add to that list but i got distracted and forgot them but im actually very much into this interpretation and im definitely taking this as canon. i like it better than that she just believes his lie. it’s different but similar with what i believe she does with yaz. which fits. but with yaz it’s mean and with the master it’s not. because this is just what they do.

oh! yeah some other things that i think might be going on here: i think if the master’s regeneration was on the colony ship, then it was close to a black hole, then that must have messed with the regeneration and his time sense. and i think the master already has a very like, unconventional squid shape because of the untempered schism and the drums etc and i think the squid shape is tied to the time sensitivity. so the way he looks now to the doctor is different to how missy looked. like, more... injured? and i think the master already looks plenty injured, but like, some new scars or new twists in their tentacles or new like, weird stuff.

like the way the doctor looks at him in that scene is like shes trying to figure him out. and if he looks like, idk, like hes got tentacles that are tied in a knot and hes got a couple more half ones and one thats like all stretched out and doesnt really move anymore. and shes trying to read him and also trying to reconstruct what the fuck happened to him and also he keeps doing all these weird things like hes not Doing The Normal Shapes the way they do it’s like, halfassed

a little bit of this but then he keeps dropping it just to spell out GRIEF GRIEF GRIEF GRIEF and then hes like half doing stuff as if they were back home as if they were 8 years old but then he keeps slipping into doing stuff as if hes locked up and she has the key only to confusedly interrupt himself to be like

like hes having five different conversations with her, in four languages, maybe as three people

and she cant really make sense of it but she gets the basics which are that hes hurt and that hes doing their old script, which she knows, and she respects the game, and theres not much she can do with the rest anyway even if she wanted to disrespect him and their game by acknowledging it, so she just,, says her lines like shes supposed to.

and then the “:D you dont know! youre not in control of those creatures” is like. no of course he isnt hes not in control of anything like if the tentacles are all these senses they use to manipulate stuff, timelines, luck, minds, etc hes sort of useless at the moment. like hes trying to do stuff but hes not being super successful because he has way more brainspace dedicated to just feelings at the moment than any plan

After substantial clawing and thrashing and temper tantrums I have made tangible progress on the next chapter of WAIWAD and I think I THINK it’ll be ready to post in the next couple days. But I am also a desperate little creature who craves validation here’s an excerpt:

In his haste to hit the road early, Pickles left his massive CD binder collecting dust on his bedside table. So he and Murderface were at the mercy of the radio. 

The first leg of their journey was soundtracked by staticky Christian rock, sorrowful country, and a deep dive into the migratory patterns of the Gray-cheeked Thrush that played on every single AM station on loop. But things improved as they closed in on Atlanta. The adult contemporary and pop stations weren’t ideal, but they were better than the alternative. (Specifically: The alternative station. If Pickles heard Bittersweet Symphony one more time he was going to drive into oncoming traffic.) The highway rolled out before them like the tongue of a cartoon cat. Hello, friends!  I’ve been meaning to make a Pirates fic rec list for years and the day has finally come.  This list is obviously in no way exhaustive and is very much indicative of my personal biases (*cough* lots of Norrington *cough*), but I can heartily recommend every fic that made this list and I hope you all enjoy it.  Making this was a labor of love and I would be thrilled to hear your thoughts on any you choose to read (though you should leave a kind comment for the author first)!

Other notes: I collected the bulk of these years ago, so there are a lot on FFnet and I have tried my best to screen them for various content warnings.  I believe only two fics on this list are explicit and are marked as such.  There is precious little slash on this list since that’s just not what I tended to read at the height of my Pirates phase; my apologies.

“Mutiny on the Dauntless” by Marnie - Governor Swann and Lieutenant Norrington narrowly skirt disaster at the hands of a ruthless captain and dangerous crew on the crossing from England. [19k words. No ships. Warnings: seasickness, battle violence, minor character death, semi-graphic naval discipline.]

“Marooned” - A movie novelization of the time Jack and Elizabeth spent on Rumrunner’s Isle.  (If you haven’t seen the deleted scenes from CotBP, they’re now required viewing: Part 1, Part 2.)  [28k.  Can be read as Sparrabeth.  Warnings: alcohol; discussion of past injuries including burns, a brand, and a gunshot; discussion of death, murder, and suicide (latter related only to marooning and not seriously entertained or acted upon); mind any others.]

“No Mercy” - Set aboard the Dauntless just after the battle at Isla de Muerta.  Have you ever been unreasonably hecked up by the sailor who rang the bell when he spotted zombie pirates?  I have because I’m Like That but now you can be too!  [1k.  No ships.  Warnings: blood, minor character death, funeral, survivor’s guilt, mention of execution by hanging.]

“For Remembrance” - Elizabeth visits Jack in prison the day before his pending execution.  [2k.  Can be read as Sparrabeth.  Warnings: brief mention of unsanitary prison conditions; death tokens; discussion of death, murder, and execution by hanging.]

“Balance of Justice” - The same night, Norrington struggles with the idea of Jack’s pending execution.  [990 words.  No ships.  Warnings: mentioned minor character death, survivor’s guilt, discussion of execution by hanging.]

“Crossing the Bar” - My all-time favorite PotC fanfic.  After the events of CotBP, Norrington thinks he has Jack cornered, but the pirate has other ideas.  A story of truly literary proportions ensues. [156k.  Canon divergent: written pre-DMC.  Light Jack/Anamaria.  Warnings: battle injuries, period-accurate first aid, minor character death. Other warnings posted in fic.]

“Just Between Us Dying Gods” -  Jack’s POV, takes place on the island of the Pelegostos just prior to Will's arrival.  [1k.  No ships.  Warnings: cannibalism, canon-typical ethnocentrism.]

“Bits of Shine” - A collection of drabbles (in the classic 100-word sense) spanning Pirates 1-3.  [14k.  Assorted canon ships.  Mind any posted warnings.]

“Christmas Reunion” - Author’s description: A Christmas reunion of several beloved characters set post-AWE. Jack's POV. Entirely fluffy.  [2k.  Willabeth.  No warnings.]

SCRUFFINGTON ANGST - Me, aged 15: but sir that’s my emotional support Good-ish Man Brought Low By Hubris (who am I kidding, that hasn’t changed a bit).  As you would expect, general warnings for this section might include minor character death, survivor’s guilt, self-hatred, alcohol abuse, unsanitary conditions, etc.  If you love Tortuga-related angst, this section is for you!  If you don’t go for whump and other unpleasant things, scroll on.

“Seven Deadly Sins: James Norrington” by Edoraslass - Classic drabble format, exactly what it says on the bottle.  Follows James’ DMC arc beginning in Tortuga.  [711 words.  No ships.  See tags on AO3.]

“Three Days” by geekmama - Several scene narrations following James from the pig sty to Isla Cruces.  Smelly bastard man.  [1k.  Several unrequited ships.  Warnings: unsanitary, alcohol abuse.]

“Eye of the Storm” by Edoraslass - Tortuga barmaid Kate is intrigued by the island’s newest barfly and strikes up a sort of friendship with Norrington until he moves on.  [4k.  No ships.  See tags on AO3.]

"We'll fight Horde Prime," Glimmer said, voice suddenly serious. Adora nodded in determation.

They put their pillow knives away. There was no time for fun and play now that their world was under seige from a space jerk.

"I can't believe Catra is with him, up there in space," Adora said with wistful voice.

"She must be," Glimmer said. "We haven't seen her since he beamed her and Hordak up. I'm just glad Bow managed to snatch me away in the last moment."

"I wonder if she's..." Adora said, voice trailing off.

"I'm sure she's fine," Glimmer quickly said, trying not to think of how broken Catra had looked last time she had seen her. "She's a surviver, right? She can always turn any situation to her advantage."

"Right," Adora quickly said.

They didn't look each other in the eye for a moment.

"Come," Glimmer said and took Adora's hand. "We need a plan."

With a boundless curiosity about the universe, Ezreal is a born explorer, and becoming a Star Guardian only served to fuel his appetite for discovery. Though known to wander off, he always returns when most needed, especially now, as a certain pink-haired Guardian from another team has caught his attention…

The First Star has burdened Ezreal with a lot. The responsibility. The hefty weight of destiny. The sparkly outfit (he's used to it). “Attending a slumber party” was definitely not on the list of expected cosmic duties. Not that he minds, really… as long as they don't actually try to braid his hair.

W.I.P

Born and raised in Ionia Ezreal comes from an ancient vastayan tribe mostly unknown to the rest if the world. His appearance is humanoid but with very notable corvid features the likes of black wings, digitigrade legs with sharp talons and a feathered tail. His adventurous spirit could not keep him bound to his birthplace so he became an explorer looking to travel all across runeterra and collecting special artifacts as souvenirs from his journey.

Vastaya are magical creatures, some more blessed than others. So ezreal is considered a mage. 

His hair is naturally black but on his journey’s he likes to dye it blonde, the black roots showing through after a while.  

Lowkey kleptomaniac. Shiny things catch the eye and cannot be left behind. 

He likes to collect all sorts of artifacts and take them home to his hideout in Ionia ( a big ass treehouse structure that could be seen as a museum of things collected from all around the map. )

He has to be careful on his travels because in most regions they are not accustomed to his species. There are always people willing to hunt what they deem out of the ordinairy.

Just like in canon he has aquired Ne’Zuk’s gauntlet on his travels and is able to use it with his mage abilities. 

I play modern verse too but dont have a specific layout for it as of yet.

Spacey ramen and the idiotic two by taeggukswitch (rooxynroll): rating: Teen And Up Audiences; words: 10,950; idiots in spaaaaace! nar is a pilot and sasuke’s a programmer, they meet when they’re paired up for an exploration trip. as one of the author’s tags says, ‘they’re intelligent af but also share one brain cell’ and this is extremely correct. it’s just a v cute and enjoyable read! 

prairie town by applecrumbledore: rating: Teen And Up Audiences; words: 8,698; sasuke’s a research scientist who moves to a small town; his car breaks down and he meets hunky local mechanic naruto. i’m sooo bad at summaries lmao, but this is super soft and sweet and i read it whenever i’m feeling down as i consider it to be a p reliable cure for depression! 

Realization (In a Drunken Haze) by playitagain: rating: Mature; words: 25,509; major warnings for alcoholism/alcohol abuse, so if that’s something that really bothers you, you should maybe avoid this one! personally, i think this is the most realistic depiction of alcoholism & recovery i’ve ever read in a fanfic- so often, even when it’s pretty clear that one of the characters has a drinking problem, it’s never really addressed, or even if it is, there isn’t a realistic portrayal of the recovery process. like, the character will just fall in love and then miraculously get over their problem and then it’s happily ever after. and while having a caring, supportive partner can be an essential part of recovery, love isn’t a magical cure, yk? ANYWAY, nar’s an english professor working toward his phd, sasuke is a student (not in any of nar’s classes) working on his master’s degree. iirc, sasuke’s age was ever specified, but i don’t THINK it’s implied that there’s any more than a few (maybe 2 or 3?) years difference between them, so no ugly a/ge g//ap business going on here. nar’s in steadfast denial throughout most of the fic that he’s an alcoholic, but with sasuke’s support, he finally starts on the (sometimes bumpy) road to recovery.

What about you? by cambion: rating: Teen And Up Audiences; words: 14,974; nar’s two best friends both come out to him, forcing him to get introspective about the exact nature of his feelings for sasuke. this one’s ninjaverse, with sasuke AND team taka back in konoha, and idk it’s just v gooood…

here comes the sun (and his kid, and a whole lot of love) by moonwatcher: rating: Explicit; words: 34,808; modern, single parent au. this one does have past ss and nh, but they’re really almost never mentioned so even if that’s typically a disqualifier for you, you still might enjoy this one. sas n nar meet at a pta meeting at their kids’ school, where nar is also a teacher. there are a looot of cute sasuke & sarada moments in this, some cute nar & boruto moments as well (no himawari in this fic tho; both guys each have only one kid), and some gooood mutual pining. it’s just really sweet and cute and i liked it a lot!!

Tough Love by Rasengan22: rated T; words: 5,729; this one’s p angsty compared to most of the other recs on this list; sasuke’s suffering from PTSD and depression following a car accident, and he’s isolating himself and having difficulty leaving his house as a result. he’s successfully managed to push most of his friends away, however naruto proves to be incredibly persistent and won’t give up trying to help him. as someone who is struggling with a lot of the same issues that sasuke is, this one hit home really hard for me. i just WISH i had a naruto who refused to give up on me;;;;

Change by stammi_vicinora: rating: mature; words: 18,378; naruto convinces sasuke to take an unprecedented day off from work, and sasuke uses his free day learning to relax and unwind a bit w his bf. this one’s just really fluffy and sweet!!!

All things of dearest value hang on slender strings by sirona: rating: Mature; words: 15,713; hokage naruto and anbu captain sasuke. during a particularly hot summer in konoha, naruto plans a beach festival for all the villagers. this one’s really fun and cute, and it may already be on virtually every fic rec list ever made, but it’s one of my faves so i still have to include it!!

Love Is Blind by OfFansAndFlames: rating: Teen And Up Audiences; words: 992; after an accident causes him to lose his vision, sasuke plays it pretty safe for the first couple of years, until naruto convinces him to put his trust in him and take a risk: by going for a ride with him on the back of his motorcycle. this one’s short & sweet, and i just loooove the element of taking a leap of faith with someone you feel safe & comfortable with to do something that’s seemed impossible to you for so long. it reminds me that with the right support, you can do things that have seemed beyond your capabilities and find a new appreciation for life! ❤

the hard-knock life of a walmart cashier by geminiuchiha: rating: General Audiences; words: 26,650; nart & sask are college students and co-workers at walmart in this one, and it’s just!! rly funny and cute!!! i know i’ve described p much every fic so far as cute sdjslfjdssd but that’s my favorite kind of fic, so !!! mutual pining ftw!!

Mirai Kissaten by fourangers: rating: General Audiences; words: 3,586; despite the fact that he doesn’t really like coffee, sasuke ended up becoming a regular at a coffee shop near his work. it might have something to do with the cute owner that always serves him when he stops by every evening on his way home. this is a really cute coffee shop au, super fluffy and sweet!

"y'all mean to tell me you don't know what noodling for catfish is?"

[(somewhat) historic] + btw, i am not a history buff - so be prepared for anachronisms galore! c: which might mean plumbing and dental care centuries before it was introduced. + noire crime! old grizzled detectives and their partners in crime trying to figure out these gosh dang murders. dang killers, bringing down everyone's vibes. + a detective moving to a podunk old town, with a ~mysterious past~. however, there isn't any mysterious past, the locals just humor the guy and i have a soft spot for the detective falling for the sheriff while constantly heckling him for assistance. + western! please, just... anything western. i love cowboys, ranches, train robberies, just... i will maybe propose if you let me indulge this. 

[fantasy & monsters] + i am also happy to write fantasy!  + fantasy can genuinely be blended into anything, into modern, sci-fi, post apocalyptic, etc. + i am also happy with pure, vanilla, cheesy fantasy - with kings, queens, beautiful warhorses and kingdoms by the sea, and conventionally attractive people with healthy teeth and... far less dysentery.  + i am happy to write sci-fi into fantasy - hunters/mercenaries with eyes that can hologram maps and prey, platinum horses made of gaskets and titanium joints who breathe steam, a kingdom in the sky, anything! + something all 'bout dat circus life! star crossed lovers tropes abound! + very, very old monsters who pester that one Highly Top Secret Government Agent ™ to let them see the spectral ghost of their mortal loved one from centuries ago. the ghosts of their in-laws also tag along. + good-natured, summoned demon spouses who just wish you'd get along with your in-laws who reside in a lovely three-bedroom villa style family home in hell. + i have a love for monsters trying to figure out this whole. human. thing. attempting to fit polo shirts for their office job over their curled horns, old werewolves trimming their nosehairs and their primary physician chiding at them for eating too much red meat, etc. there are so, so many possibilities + also dragons! [post-apocalyptic] + i've got spurs that jingle jangle jingle! post-apocalyptic in the wild, wild west sounds incredibly fun! + one innocent or guilty chump gets kicked out of a survivors organization, and their closest friend follows. then they both adventure into the great unknown of a hollow world. + zombie survival, maybe? [sci-fi] + space pilots, space pirates, space colonies, space travel, spaaaaace! + i don't have anything specific! typically, my sci-fi is blended in with other themes c: if you have anything, i'd love to hear it! [... guilty pleasures] + i love the cheesy and humorous things to temper the chaos. love, love, love writing that domestic, usually peaceful, sweet life of two happy people who have been together for ages or just met in their golden years after struggle and just... working for their happy endings. + though i am not usually interested in cheesy, obnoxious tropes... i have a soft spot for two grumpy, gruff guys falling for each other c: [miscellaneous]

+ this is hardly an exhaustive list of ideas or themes that interest me! if you have something in mind that you do not see, or anything at all, please do let me know! i love brainstorming and hearing ideas c: + note: i love writing with pretty boy archetypes!! but i am inundated with them at the moment in my current threads, bring me yer more grizzled and rough and tough boys! the two characters i have in mind are too old and boring to keep up with pretty, lithe youngins! what characters do i have in mind? plenty! craving two in particular, but i have plenty more in mind if the following two don't catch your interest: + one is svelte, aloof, posh, thoughtful. the very characterization of something like... a sleek, abyssinian cat playing the cello. intriguing, a little odd, an intimidating, coded villain - but really, just socially awkward, and a sweetheart. + the other is beefy, grumpy, and also... a goof at the core. the archetype of an ornery grandpa with the warmest heart and a distinguished grey streak in his hair. both are middle-aged men and adaptable to anything from old-fashioned fantasy, to modern, to sci-fi, to fantasy-modern hybrids, to post apocalyptic. they can be rogues, kings, survivors, lawyers, detectives, chefs, scientists, neighbors, loyal right-hands, anything from protectors and anchors to the village/office boob.  i am preferring to write the former gentleman, but i am up to write either, or someone completely different! i am also happy to elaborate upon contact if you are interested! fortunately, each one is more complex than several adjectives and a stereotypical archetype. i'd also love to hear the characters you have in mind! are you interested? well, neat-o! i can be reached at discord on howdy^3#6518, i look forward to hearing from you!
