what do you make of samurai remnant so far? As it's a weeb game, I don't expect any of the normal review sites I trust to cover it

I /hate/ Musou combat and I'm sick of Servants, so me avidly talking about this game means it's way better than even my biases can overlook.

Here's the thing: the vast majority of Type-Moon games fucking suck, because they make visual novels, not video games. "The story's good enough to make you play through this abomination" is the battlecry of Fate/Extra fans. If it wasn't for Melty Blood they might not even have any games where people play for the actual game.

This is not the case with Fate/Samurai Remnant. It's not here to blow your mind out of the water, but it's clearly a title made by people who are both great fans of the source material and are very experienced with producing games on a budget. Solid execution all-around from combat design to character art to environments.

The most notable thing about FSR though is that this game cares a lot about how things are supposed to feel. I've talked enough about how great it is to have Servants feel like real powerhouses again, but this level of care exists within the rest of the game.

"How would it feel to be partners with a superpowered being?" is the defining question informing the majority of the game design. If there's a high place you can't climb without a ladder, Saber simply throws you up there with their superhuman strength. If you're squeezing through a tight alleyway, Saber simply reappears via magic on the other side, sometimes getting ahead of you and waving mockingly while Iori can only grumble and slowly pull his fleshy human body along a tight crevice. There is actual destruction in the aftermath of the first Servant battle that you can see for yourself, which informs Iori's motivation of putting an end to this death game. Iori's neighbors express relief that he's safe because they saw his house explode, or tell him about the whereabouts of his sister Kaya, making the town feel just a little bit more like a setting Iori actually lives in.

As Iori's relationship with Saber grows, the game also tacks on more and more mechanics involving their cooperation. At the very start, Saber cannot be controlled whatsoever and is entirely dependent on the AI. As you progress though, you unlock the ability to give Saber commands and even play as them for a short time. But that's not all, Saber's AI will also start to cooperate with you, following up on enemies that Iori knocks away with a finishing move, or calling for special partner moves called Link Strikes. When you're in trouble, there's even a chance Saber will come rescue you, activating a quick time event where they lock blades with the enemy, attempting to push them back.

This is what the whole game is like. Samurai Remnant doesn't have the resources of an AAA game with an army of developers to create features like ultra HD 4k textures for all environments or realistically shrinking testicles, but you can feel most ideas started with a question of "What would it be like to have Saber here and how do we depict that in some way?" Saber would be fascinated at modern (17th century) Japan, so they often run from place to place pointing out new things to gawk at and demanding explanations from Iori. They didn't have food stalls, paper, or money in their life, so Iori has side missions to buy from every food stall to satiate Saber's hunger, which murders your wallet in-game as you are a poor ronin living hand to mouth every day and need odd jobs to make money.

It feels good to play, and not even as a Type-Moon fan where a lot of these things are something I've been asking for. I mean it's good to see another mid budget game that's neatly focused on simple, solid execution. Most review sites are giving it around a 7.5-8/10, and I'm telling you this isn't a 7.5 from a Type-Moon fan pleading with you that playing Fate/Extella's Altera route makes it actually worth it, this is a 7.5 from people seeing a decently hefty, well-made title.

As a casual fighting game player, I have dabbled in a lot of the big ones (Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, little bit of DBFZ and Melty Blood, Smash Bros) and ever since I’ve been aware of the larger scene there’s one game I’ve dared not to touch.

Tekken

Tekken is fucking hilarious from an outside perspective, with not 1, nor 2, but 4 Mexican Jaguar Luchadors, a guy who has so much hate in his blood that his nationality is listed as “None (previously Japanese)”, multiple Robots, and TWO BEARS THAT KNOW SIGN LANGUAGE.

You’re telling me that the son of the most evil man alive who used to be third to only his own father and Akuma Streets, starts World War 3 to cause mass suffering upon billions to summon the original Demon to kill it to get rid of the evil gene that runs in his family? Comedic.

You’re telling me that there’s a character who has a sword and doesn’t use it like a sword but instead like a helicopter but also a pogo stick based on what game your playing because his play style changes every entry in the series? Hilarious.

You’re telling me that a grappler is a decently viable character and has grabs that chain into more grabs that each have a different input to be teched? Fucking bonkers.

Tekken is such bullshit condensed into one of the most intense looking fighting games I’ve ever seen, but I dare not touch it because of its complexity. Almost every character has over 100 individual moves and inputs??? And not only do I need to learn how my own character’s moves work together, but also what moves are safe and unsafe to punish on block? And there’s 32 (and counting) characters??????? Nope nope nope, maybe one day if Harada adds Waffle House as a stage (legit chance) or Captain Falcon gets added as his own character (not happening ever) I’ll install it. I am so afraid of learning Tekken, I even made this gif based on how I think getting into Tekken is like. (Sorry for low quality, it was the first version of this scene I found.)

I need some Eltnum appreciation over here so I'd like to request some general relationship hcs.

Eltnum does indeed not get enough appreciation for being best girl. I have played zero Melty Blood as of now so I'm focusing specifically on her characterization shown in Unib.

-A relationship with someone like Eltnum is...an experience to say the least.

-She's fully aware of the true nature of this world, which she makes clear every second in-game. She'll say some really odd things out of nowhere which never fails to confuse you.

-She will constantly talk about people being "inexperienced rookies" or something, even to Waldstein or Linne who have been living for centuries. Also something about fighting games and something called Melty Blood? She just refuses to elaborate every time you ask about it.

-Not like you can exactly argue with her, though, she dumpsters on just about everyone she fights. She doesn't seem to use EXS powers, however when you try questioning her on it, she gives a vague ass answer which does not help at all.

-She's quite protective. She still thinks of you as another rookie like everyone else regardless of how long you've been an In-Birth, but you're her rookie.

-The main way she'll show that she cares about you is through protecting you. She won't stop you from going into the Hollow Night because you need the experience according to her, but she will be attached at your hip at all times, ready to chase off anyone a bit too strong for you to handle.

-She'll give you a good scolding if you get into a fight too tough for you, but only because she's worried. She'll help you up, dust you off, and peck you somewhere on your face. It's the small things that let you know she really cares, because the thought of her doing this for anyone else is laughable at best.

-She defaults to doing things for you to make you feel loved, as best as she can anyway. She'll train you so that you can handle yourself for the event she's not around in a Night, develop a new weapon for you specifically to suit your tastes and battle style, help out around the house, and overall pamper you.

-Physical affection was never her forte. If you wanna do any of that, you will need to initiate it first. She's not against it, though, and she's a pretty fast learner. She runs kind of on the colder side, but being in her arms brings a warm sense of security.

For the past year and a bit, I've been working on a mod of Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code. My aim was to provide my friends and I with a refreshing, stupid, fun experience for this game again.

Going by the title of Melty Blood : Chaos Continuum, I set to adjust every moon and character, as well as add stages, music, and various other things. Currently, I have adjusted 26 characters and 78 unique moon varients.

Its a hell of an experience... Personally myself i dont think i could go back to playing vanilla MBAACC LOL.

while im posting tonight. i think about that ptg doodle thats peppino vs pepperman in presumably a 2d fighter a lot so heres my thoughts on how most of the pt + sugspi cast would play in a traditional fg

i posted this in the sugary spire discord and many ppl didnt know the terms. this is alright! i dont mind. i made a little in-depth explanation of the terms i use and break down a little bit more of what i want for each character. pasted under the cut if you would like to see (watch out! its long)

peppino: zangief- very traditional grappler, peppino actually already takes some poses from him while doing certain grabs in pizza tower +rtemkin- considered to be the "best" (in terms of tier placement) incarnation of potemkin, a guilty gear grappler with a lot of really cool tools that really shine at high execution. "grappler with a shoryu" - a shoryu, or a shoryuken/DP is a reversal with an invincible startup. peppino's uppercat animation resembles a shoryuken, hence he gets one. grapplers dont usually get these for balance reasons

noise: kohaku- meddling trap-placement character in melty blood, big trickster that puts things around that youll run into trying to get to her essentially, though shes got really good offense on her own faust- item toss character thats really good at keeping you at whatever range he wants you at onscreen midrange zoner- wants to keep you away, but not at fullscreen, so he can keep putting you into bullshit

pepperman: "big body but not a grappler" - big bodies usually have more health/defense and "armor" on their moves in exchange for slower movement and better payoff "maybe hes doing some tekken shit" - yeah "definitely has counters" - a counter move is a parry that automatically grants you a counterattack

gustavo and brick: relius- guy with good offense who controls a second body on a separate resource meter to lock down pressure

vigi: keepaway characters traditionally have less health than others to make you REALLY worry about getting caught; the noise prefers midrange but vigi prefers full-range and has efficient tools for arena escape

feppi: "what if rainbow mika was dan hibiki" - ok this one has layers. rainbow mika is a disciple of zangief and thus plays somewhat similarly, with more emphasis on speed and such. dan hibiki is a joke "worse" version of ryu command grab rekkas - rekkas are moves in multiple parts/moves that branch into multiple paths. like A->B->C or A->B-or-C->D. rekkas tend to give characters really cool routing abilities and a more free-flowing playstyle command movement- a move that makes a character perform a special action rather than necessarily an attack, like a teleport or a dodge

pizzahead: i mean hes there(*)

noisette: a "shoto" is a function like ryu or ken, very much the white bread of fighting games but always welcome and usually very fun and expressive to pick up. usually has a projectile and a shoryuken, at least

pizzelle: shoto was explained on the noisette slide 👍 chipp and millia are both characters that focus on incredibly pressure and high combo counts, but have low health and poor defense to balance it out. basically speed demons

pizzano: SUPER ARMOR means you can hit him but it Will Not Stun Him. characters that super armor through shit are usually seen as Scary as Hell but also tend to be slower, big-body damage sponges. i think pizzano can move tho "this mf has divekicks" - this mf has divekicks "what if viewtiful joe was big and scary" - viewtiful joe is generally regarded to be a lower tier character in Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3: one of the smallest and slowest characters, with a lot of quirky bullshit that requires a lot of high execution but also a tv pose spotdodge (spotdodge: stay in place and avoid an attack). making vjoe 1. big 2. move better 3. not die instantly the second he gets touched by a magneto would create a horrifying force

gumbob: honest footsies gumbob he has a raging demon

stinky: usually characters with executional difficulty are higher up on the tierlist of a game (like arakune from blazblue and johnny and i-no from ggxrd), but sometimes this is not true (like angel from kof, who is the hardest character in the game to learn but considered one of the worst despite it all) i think stinky would be somewhere in the middle; a character that gives you arthritis to play and has a lot of expression, but gets shut down easy and can have his setups blow up in his face incredibly easy

if anyone else out there has any thoughts on this matter i would love to hear them. im insane.

There are days when I watch other peoples' lowkey reviews of fighting games and they almost ALWAYS talk smack about how much they're NOT interested in the game's story.

As if bashing someone's head in is the only central value fighting games have.

Humanity created fighting games, and those games also have stories... wouldn't it be very "humane" to at least pay five minutes worth of attention to the humanity found in such a game?

Oh, I'm not saying fighting games have to make sense... in fact very few do on a founding level these days...

But, some elements STILL MAKE SOME SENSE... even a little bit... the rest being for entertainment.

I find that Capcom players are the most stubborn in discussing this topic... because they're so focused on the martial arts and NOT the world around them... (Well, SF6 World Tour notwithstanding).

Prior to Street Fighter 6, the world of SF was pretty much nothing but Tournament Ladder after Tournament Ladder... there was no sense of "plot content" in the broad sense of the game's story.

If you go visit the realms of Mortal Kombat... I find that the fanbase is much more "amenable" to anything resembling a Story or MK Lore.

BUT... as a longtime Guilty Gear fan, getting caught in the quagmire of localization and LACK of TRANSLATION... I can sympathize with the BlazBlue and Melty Blood communities in terms of inaccessibility to story content. Even just not knowing Japanese is a barrier to MOST fighting games (but is, believe it or not, not very difficult to overcome, especially if you watch subtitled Anime).

Still... that whole "detachment" to a game's story just proves to me that many have yet to "fully mature" in their own understanding of the VALUE of FICTION as a product of human effort.

Maybe when I was 16 years old all I cared about was landing that one 16 hit air combo in Marvel VS Capcom... but nowadays... fighting game STORIES are part of the draw in learning the nuances of a character.

The mystery behind a character, their likes, dislikes, habits, how their fighting style has molded... their motivations, the people they interact with...

All this and more are part of what motivates me to LEARN how to PLAY a character.

It's not just the music or mechanics. Those are only just a fragment of the bigger picture.

The cape Castoria finds is meant to be Saber's cape! The relationship between Castoria & anime girl king arthur would be way too long to explain in thsi post, but they're connected so I figured it would make a cute easter egg.

I considered having Castoria freeload below the deck instead, because I've personally never played in a theater that had storage rooms above deck, but I really wanted to keep the Phantom Of The Opera vibe so I just went fuck it.

Gray is in fact a different Fate character! the tl;dr of Gray is that she's a regular-ass human, but unfortunately she was born in a weird arthuriana cult, which lead to her body slowly turning into that of king arthur. She has issues with her face a lot because like, if your face shifted to become that of a perfect stranger wouldn't that be fucked up. Coincidentally, Castoria also has king arthur's face, though for arguably less angsty reasons.

The Night of Wallachia is another nasuverse character (technically from Melty Blood rather than any fate work tho.) I will redirect you to Lance's post as to whomst this man is though because I have yet to play Melty Blood myself.

Deep fucking sigh I fucking wish. I fucking wish we had more stories about the aftermath of isekai adventures, my man. I want to know what's it like to see someone with medieval wartime reflexes who just refuses to talk about shit. Anyways the entire Guda subplot is just me not being normal about isekais, as per usual.

So this scene was originally a lot longer, with Guda tricking Castoria into giving a lot more personal information (exact date of birth, last name) and ending with them taking a group selfie- all info they can use later on to forge her ID. But it was kinda boring so I just went the "Guda forges papers by winging it and she can't call them out on it without admitting that her own living situation is garbage" route.

Didn't put nearly as much foreshadowing as I would have liked, but it's meant to be a hint of "hey maybe Castoria straight-up created Oberon, cuz how else would he know so much about her?"

Castoria is so fucking gender.

You probably saw me posting about it, but Guda's canon age in fgo is kinda nebulous. At the beginning of the game they are definitely "below the drinking age," but it's mentioned/implied a couple times later on that no one knows how old they are now (I think Vritra? Has a voice line along the lines of "oh you don't drink because you don't know how old you are so you're just being safe by assuming it's below 21? ok") What time travel and time loops and being locked outside of time does to a mf.

The Guda-Castoria-Oberon banter is a fucking joy to write. Bitches who keep teaming up to dunk on the third one.

SO FUNNY STORY. I didn't actually ship Castoria/Oberon going in. But like. There was no reason for me not to include them having weird sexual tension, especially considering I was gonna do that with GudaCas and ObeGuda. Lance was the one to point out that in a way the theater au is a role reversal from canon. In canon, Castoria and Oberon are both painfully aware of what they are and what they need to do, while Guda is increasingly unsure as to what they want and why they want it. Meanwhile here Oberon and Castoria are desperately grasping at any hint as to what is wrong with them, while Guda is crystal-clear on their singular goal of "I need to get the fuck out of here."

I keep forgetting that sexual attraction is a thing so I tried to pay attention to it for once. Hope I didn't overdo it.

okay so. to preface this a bit my primary exposure to melty blood's story has been through the manga - i wasn't well-versed enough in type moon stuff to understand what was going on first time i played her story in MBAACC (most of it was spent with me realizing i was really bad at playing her and i couldn't focus on much else), so my knowledge of her is mostly based around the plot of the original game (which was adapted) and the back alley alliance nightmare manga

so sion eltnam atlasia, at least in the original melty blood, is really strongly characterized to me by a sense of repression that kinda hits home. her entire character arc in the og melty is based around trying to maintain an emotional distance from the world around her while also desperately trying to understand them, and trying to use her etherlite connection to make up for her unwillingness to connect directly. the emotional walls she puts up aren't just to keep others out though - it's to keep her own desires in. and it ties in with being a vampire and how giving into her desires will turn her into what she feels is a monster (which... mood. don't read into that actually) and it's a reallly really good character arc about learning to live with who she is...

and then we get into osiris. the struggles with fatalism. the struggle of mentally adjusting to a certain doom. the way sion rejects osiris and her vision of the future, as well as atlas's, holding that fate is never certain and that things can be changed if people band together. and it's so much. i'm not sure i relate to this part a lot but it did really really hit home. i'm a huge sucker for banding together in the face of what's deemed to be a "certain doom"

also and this isn't really analysis but like. she's just really cute and i like her a lot

Characters I Mained This Year

1. Chun-Li - Street Fighter 6

I have always kept Chun-Li in my roster in previous iterations of Street Fighter but she was never a Main. Until her SF6 redesign! I've had tons of fun with the game in general but with Chun-Li in particular as well. When the entire base roster and season 1 DLC leaked A.K.I. immediately caught my eye and I thought she would be my main, but after realising that she wasn't part of the launch roster I immediately focused on Chun-Li and even now that A.K.I. is out and she is part of my roster, Chun-Li stayed in place!

2. Testament - Guilty Gear -Strive-

Strive's redesigning of characters confused me a bit. At first I immediately picked up I-No and then I thought that I would switch for Jack-O' when she was announced but I didn't really vibe with Strive Jack-O' as much as I did with GGXrdR Jack-O' so I stuck to I-No but I wasn't 100% content. I love I-No and I've played her in the past but I wanted something more. After finally getting Testament I was hooked. I knew they were the one and I'm so happy with my choice!

3. Nina Williams - Tekken 7

Nina is of course my forever Queen and she will always be so of course she's on this list. Not much more to say, I've mained her since I was a kid so she stays on top as the Queen of Tekken!

4. Trish (& X-23 & Phoenix) - Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

UMVC3 is of course a team game, it's just that I think of Trish as the "leader" of the team of shorts. I'm still struggling with this game, I think I always will, but it's always a nice change of pace from my usual Tekken sessions and these three girlies are my favourites to play as.

5. Mai Shiranui (&Luong &B. Jenet) - The King of Fighters XV

Now that the game's online was finally fixed I was able to get my ass kicked properly online with my girls! To tell you the truth I'm still not 100% sure if I'm sold on Jenet. I love her, obviously, but I'm not sure if she's main team material. Mai and Luong are staying for sure, but if Mature and Vice finally make it in a possible upcoming season, Mature is probably rejoining my main team!

6. Android 18 (& Android 21 & Trunks)

In a game with only four playable ladies (and one palette swap) I struggled a lot to find my team as I'm not really a Dragon Ball fan, I just have a general idea of who the characters are and what they do with their life. Android 18 was an obvious first choice and so was 21, but then I grew unexpectedly fond of Trunks (plustheothertwoladiesarenotuptomystandars) hence how he made the cut!

7. Neco-Arc - Melty Blood: Type Lumina

I always pick my mains based on looks and then personality and gameplay so Neco-Arc came as a breath of fresh air in a game like MBTL, let's be very honest. She has a distinct lack of cuntiness compared to the rest of my mains that made the top this year but I think she more than makes up for it in the personality department!

8. Mileena - Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate

It's taking me a while longer to upgrade to MK1 because I'm broke, so I took as much advantage as I could of MK11U's final hours and my main girl is of course still my number one. I'm not sure who I'll pick in MK1 though... I feel like, for the first time since Deadly Alliance, Nitara may be the one..!

Hey shutters! I have a bit of an obscure type moon lore question I was hoping you could help with. I might be running a type moon ttrpg, and my friends want to play as a demi-human. She is looking at succubi, but the wiki on them is a bit sparse. Are there any major differences between traditional succubi and type moons? I know, len exists, but I have not read KT or older melty blood material yet.

Honestly you could probably just make up your own stuff and it would be fine. Len is specifically a juvenile dream demon that was created by a mage, not a natural succubus, so the rules about Len could be argued to be different.

One thing we do know though is that succubi are capable of crossbreeding with humans just like oni, since Natalia in Fate/Zero had succubi heritage.

Don't look up what Urobochi had to say about that though.

Tell us another cute story about your everyday life that takes a dramatic tone shift at the end because it either ends up tying into your dramatic backstory or your hardcore kink lifestyle!

I imagine this is referencing the death kink thing from earlier today? My lifestyle is actually pretty tranquil other than being property that can be used at will and all. It's my fantasies that can be extremely perverse.

Anyway, it's a bit difficult to just remember those kinds of things on command. I'm usually reminded of them by something else.

I guess if we narrow it down further to "RPG experiences that got unexpectedly kinky and caused some kind of reaction" then... I managed to come up with several.

1- The wind goddess Lulwy from Elona has some surprising excellent lines if you choose to worship her. She calls you her kitty and talks about breaking you, generally treating you like her possession. If you gain enough favor with her she collars you.

2- The whole idea of blood bonds in Vampire: The Masquerade can be a huge problem from a worldbuilding perspective, but it is also extremely appealing to me since I am into mind control too.

3- Code Vein has a reputation for being horny simply because it has a couple of characters with large breasts and little clothing, but that's not particularly noteworthy to me at all. What I'm really into is all the vampire stuff, including the fact that you can unlock new powers by drinking the blood of your allies. Glad they didn't neglect the vampire factor they had there.

4- In general I just like it when games have decently fleshed out vampirism mechanics, even if they end up completely distracting me from the main quest.

5- Somewhat recently, I started playing Melty Blood with a friend of mine who has significantly more experience at fighting games than me. I joke that these are ryona sessions and really enjoy being beaten.

6- Lots of things about Blazblue qualify (it also has high ryona potential for one), but a particularly noteworthy one is Makoto being psychically tormented by Relius Clover.

7- I ended up unironically kinking on the concepts of mana transfer and synchronization (thanks Nasu). Sex or blood-drinking as a form of energy transfer or even healing. In hindsight this should not be a surprising development given that I'm already into vampirism.

8- This was most likely added by the fan translation I had to use, but is this the kind of dialogue you'd expect to see after defeating someone at a card game?

9- I was already a fan of the Total War series but I must admit that the biggest draw of the Warhammer games they have been putting out recently has just been the fact that you can play vampires and spread vampire corruption. I sexualized that, along with all the atrocities.

10- The Mary Skelter games deserve a mention based on the fact that they are dungeon crawlers in which blood splatters are a core mechanic. As your characters get covered in more and more blood they may enter massacre mode or go on a completely unhinged rampage. The protagonist's blood also has calming properties that can purify them and stop this. The girls can lick each other's blood splatters off to heal themselves or gain other benefits. It's a bit of a shame that the monster blood is pink but as a blood enthusiast I'm still a huge fan of the concepts here.

And I'm sure I can come up with more things if I thought about it more. My girlfriend has had some similar experiences as well (to be expected given how our kinks are highly in sync). You should ask her about her first meeting with the Butcher in Diablo sometime.
