I've always looked back on the johto remakes fondly, as I know most people have. they're very beloved games, and for good reason! they brought johto to life on the ds and added lots of wonderful new features. pokemon fans have long since considered them to be the best remakes in the series, and I think they deserve that reputation. however, I've been replaying pokemon soulsilver the past few days and I've been coming to realize that they still suffer specifically because they're johto remakes.
my main issue with the johto games, a problem that continues to haunt their remakes, is that the variety of pokemon available is very limited. if you want to build a full team of 6, then most of your options are likely going to be pokemon from kanto. in the specific context of gold and silver, this makes sense. they were designed as sequels to the original red and green, with the primary hook being that 100 new species of pokemon have been discovered. the original 151 were extremely beloved, so it makes sense that they would continue to be featured prominently in gold and silver. that way, whenever you did find a new pokemon, it would be exciting for the player! I understand the approach that gamefreak took with the original johto games given this context.
the problem is that most johto pokemon just... aren't very good. most of the new pokemon have very poor stats - made worse by the fact that a significant portion of them are baby pokemon. on top of that, many of the ones that are good are often inaccessible until late in the game; skarmory isn't available until after you get the 8th badge (in an optional route that many players are likely to skip, no less), and tyranitar isn't available until mt. silver, the very last location you get access to. even some of the new pokemon which are mediocre at best aren't available until the post-game; houndour and slugma can only be found in kanto despite being johto pokemon, and misdreavus - the only other ghost type besides the gengar line - also can't be caught until mt. silver.
because many johto pokemon are unusable on a team, whether due to poor stats or inaccessibility, your team is most likely going to consist of kanto pokemon. again, I understand why this is the case given the context that the games were released in, but I find it frustrating! I want to build my team around the pokemon native to the region I'm playing in, and I feel my ability to do so is being limited!
so, did heartgold and soulsilver fix this? not really. the same problems mostly persist. one of the only saving graces is that some of the formerly weak johto pokemon received evolutions in gen 4. and you can obtain some of them! however, most of them are locked behind the post-game once again, and some of them are unobtainable entirely without trading. for example, there's no good reason that you shouldn't be able to evolve eevee into leafeon or glaceon in these games, but you need to trade it to diamond, pearl, or platinum to do so because there is no moss rock or icy rock in johto. they could have added them, but they didn't.
it frustrates me because the context these games were released in was different from that of the games they were remaking. technically, they didn't need to remake them; all johto pokemon were made available in gen 3, albeit many of them were locked behind the paywall of having to buy far too many games and accessories. the primary reason for these games to exist was to make them easier to obtain. it wasn't like firered and leafgreen, which were made specifically because the majority of kanto pokemon were completely unobtainable in gen 3 due to the gba not being able to connect with gb and gbc games.
speaking of which, it feels like they didn't learn their lesson from firered and leafgreen. one of the primary causes of frustration in those games is that you are completely unable to obtain any non-kanto pokemon until the post-game, for the sake of being "faithful" to the originals. this was a problem because they already weren't faithful to the originals, as frlg featured new mechanics from gen 3 such as abilities, but I digress. with hgss, the fact that gamefreak intentionally limited which pokemon you can access until the post-game feels like another attempt at being "faithful" to the originals, but they didn't even commit to it as hard as they did before. in frlg, if you maxed out a golbat's friendship, it would attempt to evolve into crobat every time it leveled up, before stopping prematurely. in hgss, you can evolve yanma into yanmega by teaching it ancient power and then leveling it up. if you want a togekiss though, too bad, because a shiny stone isn't available until after you beat the champion.
by this point in the pokemon franchise, I don't think gamefreak needed to remake gold and silver with faithfulness to their original context. hoenn and sinnoh were both designed to be new and refreshing, so it was reasonable for fans to expect each region to have its own identity, with its own pokemon being featured prominently. they could have adapted johto to suit this new convention for the series, but they chose not to, and I can't help but feel that heartgold and soulsilver suffer as a result.

Pokemon Obscure V1.4 by Acegikmo Enterprises [C].gbc
That is the name of the Pokemon ROM hack I randomly started researching yesterday.  I remembered seeing a video of it as a kid and finding it funny before promptly going back to watching “vocaloid music”.
It took me a while to find the hack, and even longer once I found the actual name, since it was such an algorithm-unfriendly thing to search. “Obscure facts about [subject]” is a popular type of videos these days, after all.  Once I found the exact file name I found that it was repeated in a ton of ROM lists.
It’s a ROM hack of Pokemon Gold where you play as someone that was turned into a giant nose (with feet coming out of the nostrils), trying to become human again.  Or at least that’s the story according to a review on vizzed.com.
There’s a ton of wacky sprite and text edits.  It kind of reminds me of Pokemon Quartz, honestly.  Seeing the way that reviewer reacted to this hack having “custom Pokemon” (not fakemon) made me realize just how old this hack must be.
Sadly Nintendo already got to vizzed to have it taken down and I could only a download for the game by going to a different “shady” online emulation site.  Well, I did find two gameboy compilation downloads, but I wasn’t sure if my computer could handle downloading a ton of gameboy ROMs just so I could sift for one specific ROM, so I just downloaded from the first site.
I tried looking up this ‘acegikmo enterprises’ before I transferred the game to my computer that had an emulator, and only came up with a youtuber that did some weird math things that are WAY over my head. She pointed me to @acegiak, who apparently also used to go by acegikmo, but while she did make an original gameboy game, I dont think she made a Pokemon ROM hack.
Later, when I finally managed to open the ROM hack on VBA I was met with a surprise...
Tumblr media
Who’s this HFD?  And what’s Meowth hacks?
That's especially weird because this French playthrough by MeetTheReaperXV, shows that the title screen didn’t originally show that:
youtube
I tried looking up Meowth Hacks in the early 2010-2012 range, but haven’t come up with anything.  Was it a rom-hacking forum? Or a rom-hacking group?  No clue.  My search for context stops here, I suppose.
So, if you have any context for who Acegikmo Enterprises, HFD, or Meowth Hacks is: Please contact me!  I want to know if this nose-man and his pig-rival was some weird in-joke or something!
I’ll link the only other youtube playthroughs of the hack I managed to find below the cut, though.

The Lost Culture of Handhelds
I got my Gameboy Color for my birthday in 1999. It was a bit late as far as that handheld went with the Game Boy Advance just a year or two away, but it was not an uneventful time. Pokemon Gold was coming out soon, Link’s Awakening DX was released the year prior, and Nintendo was riding high after notable titles, especially The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in ‘98. And as is often the case for a late comer, I had an extensive library to choose from for my Xmas and birthday lists, from Mega Man Xtreme 1 & 2 to Bionic Commando.
But even at the time I did not realize the impact that birthday gift would have in the years to come. I am the youngest of three brothers, and we were close in age. As a result, while I did still enjoy my console games, we were still dividing TV time between the three of us. So, when the TV was occupied, my gameboy was readily available. While the middle child also got a GBC, handhelds were always more my thing than anyone else in the household.
By its name, Game “Boy” has a rather diminutive connotation. This wasn’t for the big games, surely. This is the stuff on the side, while the bigger games were doing their bigger graphics and bigger presentations. Where there was Ocarina of Time, the handheld had the smaller Link’s Awakening.
In a manner of speaking, this was sort of true. There were a lot of side stories and spin offs on the hand helds. The aforementioned  Mega Man Xtreme 1 & 2 was typically forgotten in the main line Mega Man X games (except for X6, of all games), and Link’s Awakening was carrying on Zelda’s tradition of weird spin offs to their main event games (such as Majora’s Mask). And, of course, these games were made at lower costs than anything on consoles.
But this was not just the diet coke version of gaming. Pokemon was strictly a hand held title, save for some addons like Pokemon Stadium or spin offs like Snap!. Several series were exclusive and expected to be handheld. This was not the usual casual game you see on phones nowadays. The GBA would have Boktai, a game specifically designed to be carried outside in the sunlight as part of its core gameplay.
In fact, the Game Boy Advanced is where, for myself at least, things really got off the ground. This is where Castlevania continued its Metroidvania style games (and which introduced me to the series). A whole sequel series to Mega Man X, Mega Man Zero, was released on this platform. The west was more formally introduced to Fire Emblem through Eliwood’s game on here. There was Golden Sun, an RPG which mixed turn based combat and Zelda like puzzles, and even had a system to carry on levels, inventory and other information to its sequel, much like a Bioware game. Metroid’s main series was carried on through Fusion. And, because I would not forgive myself if I forgot, we had Ninja Five-O, a great game that was in stores for about two minutes before being pulled from shelves.
Besides Golden Sun and Ninja Five-O were these mainline games in their respective franchises? Well, that’s an interesting question. Two Castlevania games were released on the PS2, but are often considered inferior to their GBA counterparts. Mega Man X on the PS2 suffered a similar legacy, next to Zero and Battle Network. Fire Emblem would have Path of Radiance on the Gamecube, which was well received, but the series would continue to shine on handhelds, through the 3DS era and into Three Houses. Metroid Prime is often considered superior to Fusion, but Prime is also in a weird position of spin off/separate continuity.
But on the other side of the coin, the GBA would break a lot of traditions from the main line series. Only one of the three Castlevania games would star a Belmont, and none of them played like the original games. Mega Man Zero was an action platformer, but is far less defined by the classic tradition of stealing a boss’s powers. Fire Emblem on the GBA had nothing to do with Marth or the other areas around Archenea.
So, while it would be unfair to brush these handhelds as “side content”, they were often breaks from form. They were a lot more experimental within the already established franchises that were released on these platforms. And not just the established names either. The aforementioned Boktai did things only a handheld could do.
But it’s not just experimentation that defined this subculture of gaming. With the push to 3D in the PS1 to PS2 era, allowing for more cinematic presentations (such as Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid), the GBA was still using 2D gameplay and graphics. While the GBA was a graphical improvement over the GBC, they were still not where the biggest budget was going toward. So, with less time and effort toward cutscenes, the hand helds were very gameplay focused.
This is telling in Golden Sun. This game was meant to invoke the RPGs of the SNES, but it does not take long at all to get to the meat of the game, between its puzzles and its combat. Mega Man Zero basically throws you into the action after a very short cutscene. The Castlevania games take a precious few moments to exstablish setting and characters before your first enemy encounter. While Metal Gear Solid, Devil May Cry, and Final Fantasy were spending a lot of time with their cutscenes, the Game Boy Advance often cut to the chase.
The lower costs also led to a larger library and more frequent releases. Mega Man Zero had an overarching story across four games with yearly releases. Each of the three Castlevania games were released fairly close to each other and had their own twists on the formula, and three more would be released for DS. Across three handheld platforms (GBA, DS and 3DS), Fire Emblem had 8 releases. Fire Emblem Fates (that mess) had three whole game length scenarios and was released only a year before the much superior, more narratively consistent Fire Emblem Echoes. Meanwhile, the Switch only had one, and there is talk of the console being retired soon. And these are just the ones I was into. I haven’t even mentioned the many Mario, Yoshi and other properties that were released here. The turnover rate for quite a number of series’ was remarkably quick.
This mix of lower costs, freedom to experiment, and immediacy granted handhelds their own culture in the gaming world. Before the indy-game market took flight, this was the place to find the smaller titles that were low on presentation but dedicated to their gameplay loops. While 3D graphics would be introduced a generation later, this culture carried on. The DS would introduce a touch screen, exploring more avenues for controls and options. Castlevania would carry on through this platform, and Mega Man Zero would get a sequel series in ZX. While the Wii had an overall mixed legacy, the DS was still carrying on what we loved about hand helds.
And then things started to change during the 3DS era. Now, let me start by saying that some of my favorite titles are on this platform. While I did get Eliwood’s game when it came out, it wasn’t until after playing Awakening did I go through the whole series and fell in love with it. Fates sullied that a bit, but Echoes redeemed that so fair’s fair. I loved Shinobi 3D, it introduced me to Monster Hunter, and this is where the series would get a lot of its success.
But here’s where things changed. The 3DS was also a major system for remakes and rereleases. Two Dragon Quest games were rereleased. We had the remakes of Fire Emblem Gaiden and Metroid II. Xenoblade Chronicles would get a release here after its Wii tenure. And there was also a very active Virtual Console (and the rerelease of many much older games) on this system through its store. A lot of ports, but not a lot of new exclusives. Castlevania really went downhill during this time, and Megaman basically imploded due to a lot of internal drama, resulting in the suddenly cancelled Megaman Legends 3. Those are two major forces that had made the handhelds fun with very little to show during this generation. There were the first party games, but the third party I fell in love with had little to show.
Now, I loved Dragon Quest VIII, the rereleases and so much about the 3DS. The immediacy was still there. But it was a point where things started to converge. Suddenly, there was very little limiting a handheld as graphical fidelity became more accessible on smaller systems. More and more gaming was digital only, and the divide was slowly melting away. I used to think that the DS was a transitional period, but, no, that honor went to the 3DS.
And then we had the release of the Switch, and the two worlds had truly met. There was no more divide between Nintendo’s main line and the experimental. The line is two blurred with the switch acting as both console and handheld. This begs the question: Has the culture truly been lost?
Before I try to answer this, I am trying not to be a nostalgia blinded downer. There are games I am looking forward to, of today and yesteryear and I don’t think the medium will ever truly die. It has its ups and downs, like all other mediums.
The immediacy has remained intact. Breath of the Wild is notable for cutting through console-Zelda’s endless tutorials and throwing you into the action. As did Metroid Dread. But Fire Emblem: Three Houses has added a lot of unnecessary fluff and I not would call it a step forward. But overall, I feel that the massive wad of tutorials and long intro cutscenes had been downsized in favor of more immersive, elegant ways of easing a player in.
With the indy game market now the way it is, the Switch does have a larger third party than a number of its predecessors. The Switch store is becoming like steam with the number of indy titles that come in. And, yes, they are gameplay focused, lower budget affairs.
But what really changed is what the major publishers are doing. And this does not just apply to hand helds. The major publishers are not as willing to do smaller projects as before. There are indy projects and major releases, but the middle class is basically gone.
Example: While Breath of the Wild has a sequel on the way, I do not see another Link’s Awakening, Link Between Worlds, Phantom Hourglass, Minish Cap or other small experimental game coming to the series anytime soon. Yes, Majora’s Mask was one of the more interesting Zelda titles, but there was still a difference between that and Link’s Awakening. Too much money goes into a release from a major publisher to indulge the weirder projects.
But it would be unfair to say that the current audience is deprived. It’s not so much that games of these sizes are gone. Instead, its more that the landscape has changed. The barrier to access for indies has basically diminished. Where you would need a major publisher before, all you need is knowledge and expertise to get something out there. It is a flooded market, granted and the meritocracy has its ups and downs. But search long enough for a given genre and you’ll find something you’re looking for.
And while Nintendo might not be as interested in small projects, the middle ground budgets are not entirely vacant. Kickstarter has had a mixed history, but things like Bloodstained captured that era very well. While the times are fraught with looter shooters, skinner boxes, and the toxic side of gaming, there is still a demand for various other genres. So, no, the culture is not lost, just transformed. Like how the internet has dispersed cultural norms from what was being enforced by TV, it has done the same to gaming.
It is hard to describe in words why I feel the end of the classic hand helds when, objectively, access to games has never been easier. Yes, I will admit it is mostly nostalgia. But the point of this article is not to decry the downfall of gaming (even if I have my own gripes on the current state of things). Rather, it is to give a perspective on a specific subculture in gaming history. It is to give light upon a era that the youngest of us had never even seen. And, perhaps, give a little context for the path of how gaming got to this point now. I could go over the whys and hows, but those are subjects in and of themselves.
There’s probably a number of kids in the back of their parents’ cars, on a switch with a brand new game they got for Christmas. And they’re hopefully not going through it with the same stigma against them as my generation. And, honestly, good on em!
Thank you for indulging me on this nostalgia trip. Happy Holidays!

Another post about Vida Translations Pokémon Silver, the fan translation you probably never knew about!
Previous post
Unfortunately, this fan translation appears to be pretty obscure, so it’s not very well-known. I decided to write up on it because no one else seems to be doing so!
I remembered playing it on a GBC multicart that contained a bunch of other games, including the ‘Pokémon World’ version of Gold, Pokémon Puzzle League, Pokémon Pinball, as well as lots of typical filler GBC games you’ll find on multicarts. Swallow, Elavator Action, Circus, Spy Vs Spy, and so on.
It was mostly definitely made in China as I recalled that some of the games’ names in the cart were in Chinese. I had several multicarts, and I think the one that had the Pokémon games in them was the only one with Chinese titles.
I guess that before the official version of Pokémon Silver was released, this fan translation, based on the Japanese rom, was probably made available on the Internet for free. It must’ve been something like the Fire Emblem If English patch, where fans translated parts of the Japanese version before the official English version, called Fates, came out.
An old bulletin board might have hinted at that:
https://www.math.miami.edu/~jam/azure/forum/tuff/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t=000363
Tumblr media
The original Vida Translations website is, of course, already long gone, but we can still see how it looked like back in 2000 with the help of Wayback Machine.
Tumblr media
We can’t visit any of the links on the site unfortunately.
By the time 2002 came around, the site has been completely revamped, and we don’t see any of the Pokémon translations on it anymore. Not surprising, considering that the official Gold and Silver came out in 2000, and Crystal in 2001. None of the links can still be accessed either, though.
Tumblr media
It appears that the site was completely gone by the time 2004 came.
So I guess the people behind the production of the multicarts just took the fan translated roms off the Internet (that were available at that time) and slapped them into the multicart, along with the other GBC roms.
Man, how I wish I could talk to one of the translators from the Vida Translations team someday, and tell them all about how their work made my childhood, even if most the translation is just made-up stuff.
It seems like a lot of people do remember Vida Translations, just that they don’t know it by name:
https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/4u2twn/looking_through_my_old_cartridges_i_found_this
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kXrwBcwUDGE
https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/3460171/all
https://gbatemp.net/threads/pokemon-hong-kong-gold-version-ips-patch.456707/
Oh, and the place where I found the rom of Vida Translations Silver from:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Roms/comments/d6hr53/
I remembered that I never made it to Kanto back as a kid, let alone got to battle Erika, so I never knew about the level 127 Octillery though.
(Edit: I later decided to cheat my way to Celadon City to battle Erika, but she didn’t have a level 127 Octillery, just her usual team. I guess the version played by the poster wasn’t Vida Translations Silver, then.)
I recalled how I would restart the game over and over just to enjoy the Pokémon adventures over and over again. The first time I reached Ice Cave, I couldn’t solve the first ice puzzle, so I would always restart the game from that point. I also remembered how I used to try figuring out how to get to the Blackthorn City I see on the map by visiting the foot of the hill at Route 45 and trying to go up the slopes. I used to wonder why I couldn’t just use Fly to go up and reach Blackthorn City.
I also have a memory of crossing the river to the east of New Bark Town and checking the map to see a new region I’ve never seen before, and getting excited about visiting it. I remember the music on that route back then. I couldn’t get past of course, as I didn’t have the final badge yet.
Eventually, in one of my playthroughs, I successfully made it past the whole of Ice Cave and made it to Blackthorn City. However, that was when my parents decided to confiscate my GBC and ban me from playing it again because ‘it’s bad for my eyes’ due to the fact that it had no backlight. When I finally got it back again years later, and when I booted up my game, I found myself saved right outside Ice Cave, in Blackthorn City.
That wasn’t until I’d already played and completed the official Pokémon Silver rom on an emulator on my computer though.
I remembered doing something stupid. I wanted to see if the shortcut to open up the save file deletion option worked, so I did, and some text I couldn’t read came up, and I selected the bottom option, which turned out to be a ‘yes’, and that save file was gone. I didn’t mean to delete it, so I was upset, but I told myself that it was fine as I often restarted my game over and over in the past anyway.
I decided that I wanted to fulfil my childhood room of visiting Kanto on the Vida Translations Silver, so I looked for my old GBA SP charger, and though the backlight had already broke a long time ago, I played through the entire game, up till the point I defeated Red. Even that could have easily been 10 years ago from today.
If only this early fan translation could be as well-known as Pokémon Vietnamese Crystal...
Well, I hope this post will help serve as a starting point!
(And I’d totally play a HGSS text patch that changes all of HGSS’ text into the Vida Translations’ text just for the nostalgia! Complete with all the garbage text too!)

20-25 (inclusive) for the vidya game qs?
As you wish!
20: What was the first video game you ever played?
Oh god, that’s hard to remember. I feel like since Pokemon Gold is coming to mind, maybe that? God, that can’t even be right. It was something on my GBC tho!
21: How old were you when you first played a video game?
UHHHHHHHHH Like 5 or 6 or something??? I think???
22: If you could immerse yourself in any game for one day, which game would it be? What would you do?
Hmmmmm this is a tough one. I think I’d enjoy experiencing something totally different/alien that could provide a neat experience thru technology…so I guess Pokemon, cause that seems pretty laid back comparatively? Look, my usual games are not very immersion friendly!
23: Biggest disappointment you’ve had in gaming?
Ohhhhh we don’t want to start the Mass Effect rant today, do we? But Mass Effect, frankly.
24: Casual, Hardcore, or in the middle?
I think if I say anything other than Hardcore I get slapped right?
25: Be honest; have you ever used cheats (like ActionReplay or Gameshark)?
Yeah, I definitely have! Some on emulator to speed up play, and then I had an ActionReplay that I used to just create a hacked as fuck Pokémon Diamond—it was my game I just ruined for the fun of it! I did not even pretend it was legit XD It was fun to force the wild Pokémon to be Arceus all the time. Besides, Platinum was my legit game.

I may have spent the last 5 hours researching Beta Pokemon and pre release demos or leaks from gen 1 to gen 8
Here's some shit I've noticed
The further back you go, the more you're gonna find. There's far more confirmed available beta or cut material available for gens 1 through 4 than 5 through 8.
Game Freak is a bunch of bitches for cutting these pokemon
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean come on. Skeleton monster. Flying fish. Warwolf. Actually terrifying wolf that could be the original legendary leader of the Johto beasts. A STORK POKEMON FROM GEN 2, THE GEN WHERE BABIES WERE MADE.
Granted some of these have been reworked into some later pokemon but still. I'd wager there's enough leftover from gen 1 and 2 to make at least half a dex.
There could've been huge domino effects that would impact the current games if certain things remained the same from the gen 2 betas.
Blue was Oak's assistant, Silver was your childhood friend like Blue or Barry, and Oak RELOCATED his lab to Silent Hill so he could study the new pokemon. What this could've meant was that instead of new professors, it could've been Oak just relocating, at least in MY theory.
Space World Beta starts out remarkably similar to RBY. Gold tries to leave through the grass, BLUE stops him, Gold and Silver pick a pokemon, both battle in the lab. That's about all I could find with game play and translations at the moment
However, Misty and Giovanni could e been in the E4. So much story could have changed if Giovanni was part of the Elite 4, because TR wouldn't necessarily need the radio tower to find him.
There are also sprites for an Oak IMPOSTER and data was supposedly found to say that Oak ran away (I have yet to find that myself but I have seen the sprites)
Something else to note is that all of this was before the big shift to the GBC style we know GSC to be in, using Yellow type graphics. It's highly possible from a guessing point that some or most of it had to be scrapped to make more up to date stuff.
Taking a step back to gen 1, Brock was almost the second gym leader. Wouldn't you know it, the Viridian Gym could've been the first gym, a flying one at that lead by a kid.
Red had a whip. Dunno how to feel about that
At some point instead of centers, the players would most likely stay at inns. There's a huge Sprite sheet showing towns with a few inns here and there and a remarkably different Kanto. Celadon was surrounded by water once!
Gen 3 is mostly stuff I already knew, like 28 planned islands for the Sevii Islands and the cave that was affected by mystery gift, but there are rumors of another pre release demo out there with more beta stuff. The only real thing of note I learned was that there were at least sprites made for The Johto Beasts, which make it likely that they could have been planned as stationary encounters at one point.
Also from gens 4 and 5, Masuda or whoever leaves little Do Re Me Fa So La Te Do using the in game instruments, presumably to test it.
I've yet to confirm the legitimacy of it since the sprites are so hard to come by, but its possible that gender differences were planned for ALL pokemon for gen 4 and onwards. Pikachu had floppier ears as a girl, Charizard had one horn, incidentally there were roughly 60 something done, none involving gen 4 as far as I know. However the legitimacy is questionable since the person responsible removed the sprites after some bullshit on 4chan. Also the sprite style is a bit... off, to me anyway.
Speaking of gen 4: there's a possibility that Jubilife City could've had a gym or a condo challenge of some kind
Oh, this bounced back to gen 2 but also involves 4 by remakes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Notice a pattern? In the gen 2 early sprites, Gold was gonna have a thing on his hat, but someone scrapped that. In HGSS, the idea mustve been tried again, only to ALSO be scrapped. My friend speculated it to be so they wouldn't have to worry about adding that detail to smaller OW sprites.
Tumblr media
Also just look at the original. That's such a 90's hairstyle.
Back to gen 4: technically something I already knew and am STILL salty at Masuda for cutting, but the Azure Flute has more significance to it than I initially thought. For those that don't know, the Azure Flute would let you go to Spear Pillar, play it, and battle Arceus at level 80. Don't believe me? Grab an action replay or google it. The item is still in the coding but the item wasn't legally distributed because Masuda sucks and hasn't heard of Google or instructions.
Anyway, the significance of this is bigger than expected because the beginning note of the Azure Flute is the SAME as the sound byte that plays for the GF Logo. In addition, the Hall of Origin Music is nearly identical to the Press Start Screen.
Do you have any idea why that's so damn significant? From the moment you put the cartridge into your DS, you were foreshadowed a fight with GOD. Just... good lord that's amazing to me that I never made the connection. Its amazing just because, how creepy and is it that you know the music as it plays? From before your journey? For a fight with a location and music that screams ARE YOU FUCKING INSANE??? WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO FIGHT GOD? DO YOU WANT TO DIE???
Gen 5. Not too much here of note as of the moment, but something interesting: there's apparently a line of text that reads something along the lines of "the mission to save yourself has started." This comes from the Entree. Creepy as hell. I love it.
Hilda and Hilbert were planned at least at some point to be fightable in the PWT. They have lines that match each other and everything. Why was this cut? It's such a shame.
There was an unused theater house, my guess is most likely for musicals or possibly more movies like BW2
Gen 6: not a lot I don't already know tbh, but there's a difference in happy birthday music in the pokemon center in japan and international because of that one asshole company that had or has copyright to Happy fuckin Birthday.
Gen 7: here's some juicy shit: according to Ohmori, trials weren't really considered until the game had entered Debugging phase. There's even a cybernetic looking gym room. Going from this it is quite possible that Trials were added last minute and gyms were originally the initial go to. Tbh I'm kinda glad they did it, I'm not a fan of railroading but I do appreciate something different to break the 20 year monotony.
Gen 8: not a lot tbh. There's data for all pokemon in LGPE but trying to load them brings out Marowaks, and every pokemon has an ability, but it's sort of turned off.
SwSh:
There's unused music for Eternatus
Apparently Silvally could learn Grass Pledge, but not the other two.
Theres 2 unused trainer classes
That about wraps it up. The juicier shit comes from gen 2 imo simply because of the possibilities.
GF, please, add skeleton monster and pants hippo to a future game.
Btw most of my info comes from The Cutting Room Floor, which has a lot of info on this stuff. Some comes from googling and some from poketubers. Its interesting to look at.

Pokemon! I still have a floppy disc (I am that old xD) with GBC emulator and *I think* Pokemon Blue, Yellow and Silver.
Times were different, getting an actual Game Boy was really difficult, and really expensive, so my dad arranged it for me (I was maybe ~10? I'm not approving piracy etc., but I knew shit about it back then xD). Today I'd probably buy it on eBay or locally, or just play whatever is available on a Switch, if I had enough time to play something else than titles from my pile of shame :D
A floppy disc?? Oh my god xD The wonderful memories of floppy discs, it’s incredible what comes back at the mere mentioning of the name xD
Gosh yes, the old games were just... They definitely were harder than the ones today. You weren’t healed at every corner and after every huge fight, you weren’t led around and needed to find your own way, items were only rarely handed to you on a silver platter... Sometimes I miss them, until I remember that they were also incredibly frustrating sometimes xD
I started with Gold, Silver, Crystal and those three are still my all time favorite editions of Pokemon. Ruby and Sapphire were also pretty good, and on my Emerald Edition I have around 300hrs of play time xD
Yeah, ebay or a local gamestore would be your best bets at getting those older editions. I don’t think they are still in production, especially after the DS and Switch rose so much over the years :/
Oh man, that ask brought back some memories xD Thank you for that one! :D

Tumblr media
Once my brother and I had beaten Pokemon Emerald and Pokemon Gold/Silver together, we felt as though we were running out of pokemon games to play together. We both wanted to stick to GBC and GBA, so we decided to turn to ROM hacks. Starting with a hack of FireRed: Rocket Edition! As the name of the hack and my drawing imply, it’s a hack where you get to play as Team Rocket, and it was tons of fun!
This was our fastest beaten game, with us starting April 24th, 2020, and finishing just yesterday, May 4th, 2020. Is that a bad thing? Nah, just goes to show how much extra free time we’ve had... And hey, if y’all have any pokemon ROM hack suggestions for us to try next, feel free to let me know!
Now, with all that said, off to the  team stats and general gameplay info under the cut:
Team Citrine, in the order they were caught/stolen (Name, Species, Sex, Moveset):
“Rhubarb”, Vileplume, ♂,  Teeter Dance - Stun Spore - Giga Drain - Acid
“Sled Fast”, Slowbro, ♂,  Slack Off - Blizzard - Psychic - Surf
“Birdra”, Dodrio, ♂,  Quick Attack - Drill Peck - Fly - Pursuit
“Bomb”, Magneton, ⚲,  Discharge - Mirror Shot - Tri Attack - Thunder Wave
“Red Baron”, Dugtrio, ♂,  Sucker Punch - Earthquake - Aerial Ace - Rock Slide
“Klromph”, Muk, ♂,  Shadow Sneak - Gunk Shot - Brick Break - Fire Blast
Team Nelvana, in the order they were caught/stolen (Name, Species, Sex, Moveset):
“Pestilence”, Raticate, ♀, Hyper Fang - Crunch - Quick Attack - Swords Dance
“Weed”, Victreebel, ♂, Leaf Blade - Acid - Growth - Knock Off
“Bro”, Nidoking, ♂, Poison Tail - Rock Slide - Earth Power - Brick Break
“Snap”, Golduck, ♂, Blizzard - Surf - Psychic - Calm Mind
“Dula”, Farfetch’d, ♀, Swords Dance - Fly - Slash - Leaf Blade
“Siccem”, Arcanine, ♂, Flamethrower - Thunder Fang - Crunch - ExtremeSpeed
General Playthrough Notes (Spoilers for Rocket Edition):
Beating the game was around 14 hours each? This is a fairly short hack, but also really well balanced.
Going in to the league itself, my entire party was level 51 except Siccem, and Citrine’s entire party was level 52.
For some notable pokemon theft (you steal pokemon when you’re in Team Rocket): I stole Lance’s aerodactyl (because it was the rarest in the bunch, hardest to “replace” in Lance’s words) while Citrine stole his kingdra, and we both stole Red’s charizard and Oak’s venesaur.
Our nicknaming style here was to just,, nickname our pokemon based on the first thing we think of when obtaining them. It turned out pretty fun, and I at least feel that it fits the Rocket style in a way.
Citrine changed his team a whole lot throughout the game. He also explored a couple more routes than I did, so it evened out a bit in the end.
I named Missing.no “Miracle” because I thought it would be ironic seeing as how everyone else in the game called them “The Catastrophe”. Citrine named his Miggning.no “Big Glitch”.
I prepped a lot of items in the game and used almost none of them the entire time!
In the end, I had a bounty of 25k. I would only usually steal rare pokemon, pokemon that come from important trainers (I didn’t steal from any gym leader though), and just out of spite. This meant that my sentence at the end was only 4 years, which if I/my character had to sit through it instead of Shigeki bailing me out, it could have been manageable.
Citrine, on the other hand, ended up with a bounty of 386k! He stole from everyone and filled up around four and a half pc boxes. This meant that at the end of the game, his jail sentence was 54 years! What a madman.
My fight against Mewtwo lasted five turns. Pestilence set up swords dance twice, then used two crunchs, the second of which was a crit and cut through most of Mewtwo’s health, and then she quick attacked to finish them off. Mewtwo spent that entire time setting up amnesia, reflect, and light screen. Mewtwo was level 70, and Pestilence was level 41. Beware the plague.
Flash Cannon in Citrine’s game was glitched and would crash the game whenever it was used. My game was fine with it. We’re not sure what was up there, but also Citrine’s admin battle sprite was also glitched.
This was a good chance for us to try some new pokemon and revisit some old favorites! We really enjoyed it.
We both don’t like the post credits scene. Falls apart too much when you think about it, and kinda makes all your efforts feel worthless.
Moral of the story: Bill is a two-faced bitch, Blaine and Fuji are limp noodles, Ronnie can exist just nowhere near me, Oak got let off too easy, and Blue is my new best friend.
Oh, and also: fuck Lance, and Shigeki is best grandpa.

Shaymin and Gardivor
Shaymin: What is your happiest Pokemon memory?
Honestly, I’m probably forgetting a lot of good memories, but one thing that always sticks out to me was when I was playing Gold on my GBC and I started breeding Chikoritas at daycare. I had a small army of them and seeing them made me so happy :D I can’t remember all the names, but I definitely called two of them Chikky and Lee
Gardevoir: What Pokemon gives you the most feelings?
Butterfree, hands down. After Bye Bye Butterfree, I can’t even think about the lil guy too much without tearing up, let alone see him in any media 😭
Ask me a Pokemon question!

Pokemon Gold Beta Downloads
So the beta for Gold was dug up and shared with the public, much to my joy. And with a lot of hard work, I was able to patch the game and make it playable on any emulators (hopefully).
LINK TO DOWNLOAD THE GAMES: https://drive.google.com/open?id=15KDJMRKsO1v1_EWjjrlhm3Uvh4yrf9nz
Contains: 2 versions of Spaceworld Gold in SGB file, 2 versions of Spaceworld Gold in GBC files
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SGB AND GBC FILES: SGB file can be played like if you'd play on a super gameboy on a SNES, which means the game will be colorized. GBC means the game won't be colorized and will be in black and white
TO PLAY THE SGB FILE: Download this emulator: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1i58gqKjo-1TyKfvf7ZAnxF67Dc04ne5W TO
PLAY IN GBC FILE: Download this emulator https://drive.google.com/open?id=1PmGOH3JSrjo-UH4dLNYy9WcDvYAN6OUj
READ ME FILE FOR THE ROM: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1B5epMdm1Wcvh33qFABpw-SO76uZt6WNSl0UsD5yq_dI/htmlview?sle=true#
Note that the rom is in japanese. A team has already been working on patching it and releasing it in english, it should be translated in about a month. Here’s a link to one of the team’s member to keep yourself up to date with the translation.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. I am in no way a professional but I can do my best to answer all your questions.
Also HUUGE credits to The Cutting Room Floor for digging up this rom and making all these discoveries possible. Feel free to check the article about Spaceworld Gold HERE
Want to see the full Pokedex? Check the dex HERE in high quality.
Have fun!
EDIT: I have added a fized GBC and SGB version of POKEMON SPACEWORLD SILVER. As far as I’m aware of the difference isn’t that big. There’s no Lugia and the only thing i noticed different is the borde when the game is colorized
-with love from Kommo-O

Pokemon gen 1, 2 ,4
Gen 1:never played | want to play | terrible | boring | okay | good | great | a favorite
While gen one’s anime was a big part of my childhood, I never played the games and don’t have any intention of doing so. The many quirks in the code are fascinating to analyze, but... yeah. Nah
Gen 2: never played | want to play | terrible | boring | okay | good | great | a favorite| my view has been tarnished by my own hubris
Back in primary school, I borrowed a friend’s GBC to play Gold. I wasn’t allowed to save over her file so I played through the whole game without turning the game off. I got to the elite four, whited out in a really stupid way, and in my frustration I accidentally turned the game off and lost everything.
I cried for a week and have never touched the gen again.
Gen 4:never played | want to play | terrible | boring | okay | good | great | a favorite
As I said before - currently working my way through Platinum! 10/10 for Looker content alone.

List of all the videogames I’ve played (or recall playing)
I remember making a post about this a while ago. I’m just doing this again because I want to keep track of the games I’ve played and to make sure I finish them.
This was fun because I remembered some of my childhood videogames. Anyway: List of videogames played ever since I was a kid to present: 1. Super Mario 64 - N64 2. Super Mario Bros. -Don't know. (it was like those swapmeet controllers. that had 100 games) 3. Tennis -Don't know. 4. Baseball -Don't know. 5. Contra (Don't remember which number.) - Don't know. 6. Pokemon Yellow version -GBC.* 7. I’m going to get back to this later because I actually need to finish my games. I don’t like how I have so many unfinished ones on here. There are probably many more I have forgotten. These are all the videogames I've played.

I have the limited edition Pokemon Gold/Silver Edition Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Advance SP, DS Lite, and 3DS. I used to have the original Pocket Gameboy, but my dad dropped it and it hit the corner of the table, breaking the screen, a long time ago. I also have my parent's old Atari 2600, the original Playstation, and a Nintendo 64.
I only got the gold Gameboy Advance with the pikachu and pichu silhouettes on them, and I still have it though it’s pretty beat up now so it has a lot of scratches and on some of the corners, especially on the back, the gold paint’s worn off. I never had the original Gameboy, but I did get the Gameboy Micro when that came out for a little while. Pretty sure I ended up getting rid of it eventually, but I haven’t checked the case I where I keep all my old GBC and GBA games so if I didn’t that’s where it’d be. Sorry to hear your dad dropped your Pocket Gameboy, that’s a bummer! I had a PS2, still do, but I don’t have anything for it now or one of the cords to connect it to an outlet (I used it between the PS2 and PSP). My mom never really liked me playing on my Gameboy since she didn’t want me to get hooked on video games and instead keep spending my time drawing and reading and things like that, but when my cousin grew out of Pokemon he gave me his Gameboy Color and Pokemon Red and Blue, which was how I first got into it. Now she doesn’t care so much and has come to accept that’s one of the main ways I spend my time (albeit more on the 3DS than PS3, which she gets more use out of with streaming her TV shows on).
