Playing cards

What do playing cards mean to you? That’s what I’ve been thinking in-depth about in the last few days. I’ve been asking myself, Why do I collect them? Why do I carry a deck of cards with me at all times? When seeing a new deck of playing cards, why do I critique every aspect, like it’s an art piece in a gallery?

I have came to a conclusion that I have no idea lol! I have always been drawn to playing cards. To me It’s natural to have them on me all the time. Most people leave their house with keys and a bag, myself, I leave the house with keys, phone but a MUST a deck of cards, different pack each time. I leave a deck of cards in different places around the house so when having moments during the day or first thing in the morning it helps me focus. Nothing too intense, just a very basic shuffle then cut the deck of cards to see if I’ve stopped at the same card. After a few minutes, everything is all good and I continue my day/task. Playing cards are my comfort blanket!

Even when I was younger buying new cards every week, doing card tricks and magic was always my thing! Looking back having a deck of cards in my hands and getting a different and unique pack was more important to me. Playing cards came first to magic, they were more important to me then the card tricks.

I remember watching Penn and Teller for the first time and seeing the bicycle standard blue and red deck of cards being used and thinking wow, that’s what I need. When I went online I couldn’t believe my eyes. All the amazing designs eg; red and blue standard edition, bicycle tragic royal playing cards, black and white ghost by illusionist & arcane cards by illusionist. Then I came to the deck that really open my eyes to the assortments of designs, styles and different textures - De’vo Blades!

While reminiscing about all these memories, I have learnt the deck of cards have gotten me through some bad times and yet they’re just 52 thin cards inside a cardboard box, with colour pictures. But the passion I have for the object is enormous and its only growing with each year. I have lost many decks but my bond with playing cards has never been stronger!

The twentieth card of the Tarot is associated with Pluto. It suggests a significant, life altering opportunity, which could come as a crisis of some kind. It’s a turning point. It’s a call to the next chapter, maybe what feels like a new awareness at soul level. It may involve the resurrection of previous elements of your life, coming back around in a different form. This is the energy of rebirth. It’s likely to highlight relationships, be they family, children or love-oriented. The archangel Gabriel is often depicted in this card. This angel is associated with communication, writing, music and the power of sound. It could be music or audio frequency therapy. It’s linked with psychology, hypnosis, and ways of working with the subconscious. The twentieth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, Resh, can mean lead or beginning.

Purslane is a symbol for sustenance. It’s linked to the moon (cool + moist/breasts, stomach, female reproductive organs). It’s a succulent, high in water content, and said to be very tasty! It’s high in omega 3 fatty acids and contains calcium, potassium and vitamins A and C. It’s been used as a blood purifier, and is thought to help regulate blood sugar, treat dysentery and urinary tract infections.

James Patrick Page (born January 9, 1944) is an English musician, songwriter, and record producer who achieved international success as the guitarist and founder of the rock band Led Zeppelin. Page’s interest in the occult started as a schoolboy at the age of fifteen, when he read English occultist’s Aleister Crowley’s Magick in Theory and Practice. He later said that following this discovery, he thought: “Yes, that’s it. My thing: I’ve found it.” Page’s own so-called “Zoso” symbol has been identified as a sigil consisting of zodiac signs. During tours and performances, Page often had his “Zoso” symbol embroidered on his clothes, along with zodiac symbols, which included the signs for Capricorn, Scorpio and Cancer- Page’s Sun, Ascendant and Moon signs, respectively. In the early 1970s Page owned an occult bookshop and publishing house, The Equinox Booksellers and Publishers, at 4 Holland Street in Kensington, London, named after Crowley’s biannual magazine, The Equinox.

#Repost @obanjones ・・・ Walter Kennedy’s Pirate Flag (on playing cards) Pirate Walter Kennedy first sailed in 1718 with Captain Howell Davis on "The Rover". When Davis was killed in June 1719, Kennedy was given second-in-command by Bartholomew Roberts who had been elected to replace Davis. While Roberts was on "The Fortune", the first sloop they captured after Davis's death, Kennedy sailed off on The Rover heading for Ireland. Unlike Roberts, Kennedy wasn't much of a navigator and ended up wrecking the ship on the coast of Scotland. Though the majority of the crew was captured and hanged, Kennedy managed to escape to Dublin and eventually to England where he set up a house of prostitution, supplementing his income by way of burglery. One of his prostitutes turned him in to authorities for robbery. He was recognized in prison and hanged in London for piracy in 1721. Year of the⁠ Dragon⁠ ⁠ Each year in the lunar zodiac bears the name of one of the twelve animals of the zodiac. There is an ancient tale that says the Jade Emperor organised a race inviting all the animals to compete for a space in the zodiac. The 12 year cycle shows the results of this race.⁠ ⁠ You'd assume that the dragon, the only mythical creature in the zodiac, would obviously place first in the race, so why did Dragon only come in fifth?⁠ ⁠ During the race, kind Dragon saw a village in trouble with a fire rapidly spreading from house to house. Dragon didn't hesitate and left the race, rushing to extinguish the fire. Once back on course, Dragon then saw Rabbit struggling to cross the river as her logs were being pulled too quickly by the current. A ToonBuds playing card design: Starting in the 15th century, names of famous people from history or mythology were assigned to each of the face cards. This tradition survives with the Paris pattern, which you see on playing cards today. ToonBuds would like to add on to this tradition by assigning famous artists to our aces. The ace of diamonds is named after Leonardo DaVinci, his most famous works include the vitruvian man, the Mona Lisa, and the last supper. He was a master at many things including math, music, and just about everything.
