Final Workshop

I wrote about my play’s first workshop which happened two months ago. Last month, prior to my play reading was the second and final workshop. There was a stark difference in how the first and second workshops were and I think this merited another post about the process. Greetings to everyone who finds us, I just posted what will hopefully be my final farewells to our official Twitter account. I set up a bunch of automated posts back in early 2023 and those are still running on that account, but after it's done it will be effectively abandoned. I don't have any future plans for that account and in all likelihood it will be deleted as soon as we decide there's no further use for it.

This is the Tumblr account I set up back in August and promptly forgot about. I don't like to discuss the personal details of our life but 2023 was an especially hard year for us and in order to really make this account and the podcast happen, I need to be able to focus on it. So that is the immediate plan for 2024, to hopefully regain my focus on and especially my love for theatre.

Unfortunately I have not participated in any theatre in four years now, there are a number of reasons but the big one is that my mental health isn't that good these days. I'm hoping that returning to a more literary / academic approach to theatre will help satisfy my need without tempting fate with my anxiety.

The general vibe of this blog is largely light academia / dark academia, with special focus on dramatic literature, theatre history, and probably some pictures of actual theatre buildings. Also things like poetry, coffee shop and bookstore vibes, that sort of thing.

Remember that playreading group I did like a year ago? We should do that again. We gave up like three scenes into macbeth. I think we should read Antigone again

I gave up on writing prose in 2016 and started writing prose poems instead. I made a play that contained a previous play, containing some of the prose poems.

From my playreading I learned I can’t devise another work without a plot. Characters and story don’t make sense to me any more, but they have meaning. the people need answers.

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to attend a playreading (of several short plays) with Bite Size Theatre, with lots of other really talented local actors. Apart from the simple joy of getting to read new (or fondly remembered) scripts from over the years, it reminded me of how good it is to reconnect with others.

Quite often, particularly as actors, writers, or any kind of theatre maker, the world can feel a little disconnected and siloed: unless you’re, say, part of a local community group, or perhaps rehearsing for an upcoming production, it might be very easy to feel a little bit left behind. And it might go without saying that the very word ‘networking’ can be off-putting - even actively upsetting to many of us, conjuring up images of illegibly written name tags and filter coffee.

It’s one of the reasons why we set up the Ironclad Hub, and also why every month, we deliver a very affordable drop in acting class in the heart of Brighton. Seasoned regulars and nervous beginners are all equally welcome, and I know we’ve set up a welcoming and inclusive space in which to devise, improvise, read scripts, and improve our public speaking.

With Ironclad Creative, Cast Iron Theatre, and of course other groups like Bite Size and the New Venture Theatre, I know that I’m constantly evolving and developing as a facilitator and a coach. There’s plenty of exciting stuff planned for 2023 and beyond, in Brighton and beyond!

Last night, we had tech, and we all realized how much we'd MISSED tech. Overcoming problems as a group, the hilarious things that happen when everyone's trying to get on the same page but you're not quite there yet, and just those moments of lag where the strangest inside jokes happen.
