So, there are only three of the original six verses in Tori Amos's version of A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square, right? I was writing a scene from episode five, season 2, so for continuity's sake, I checked the approximate place the song starts up in the Bentley when Crowley starts the car in episode 6.

The song begins to play at around 1:09, just before the interlude and right before the last line verse two:

I may be right, I may be wrong But I'm perfectly willing to swear That when you turned and smiled at me A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square

Out of curiosity, I went back to season one, and though it plays on through the credits, the actual footage cuts off right at the tail end of verse one:

That certain night, the night we met There was magic abroad in the air There were angels dining at the Ritz And a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square

Let's imagine for half a second that since Neil and Tori Amos are friends and her version was recorded specifically for the series, each verse refers to a related event, i.e. Crowley and Aziraphale's season one end Ritz date.

And that though things go entirely south during the following fifteen minutes, verse two perhaps refers to these moments preceding it:

Then it's not out of the realm of possibility that the closing scene of season three could end with verse three:

The streets of town were paved with stars It was such a romantic affair And as we kissed and said goodnight A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square

If the established pattern of relating a preceding event continues, then maybe, just maybe, Crowley and Aziraphale will share a kiss- a good, sweet, happy kiss- just before the series ends for good.

A big problem with the way Nora handles the diversity is that it only matters in the story when the characters in question are getting called slurs or generally being victimised. Outside of that it has no influence.

Like when Laila (I get them mixed up too, so maybe not her, but Cat) gets called the n-word. When does her identity ever matter in the story outside of that? Because I can't remember a time it ever did.

If Nora doesn't have the time in the book to unpack what it would've been like for Laila in that time period properly, and truthfully I think it's okay if she doesn’t, then I think she should opt for it to not matter at all. In my opinion, it's better for it to not matter at all than for it to only matter when a character wants to be racist.

But then I would also then say there's the issue of nobody but the two main white characters having any depth. If Laila did have depth, I'd probably be more forgiving about this.

Even more so, it's not helped by the fact that the excuse for slurs in the original was often that it's accurate to the time period - which is true and, I think, fair. And while that is also true in the new book, she also doesn't stick to the time period fully in the new one like she did in the old. You can't have time period accuracy as a reason for slurs if you're okay with having group chats in the early 2000s.

i don't entirely agree with your first point: the diversity also comes to the fore when characters are cooking or eating traditional foods from their cultures as well as when they are speaking different languages. in the og trilogy the multilingualism is more so a plot-related contrivance but in jean's books each of the main characters beside jeremy has a native language that isn't english. even so, none of the languages beside french are really focused on. and as for the food idk this is my personal pet-peeve but due to having limited interest in culinary arts irl i also couldn't care less about what fictional characters cook or eat and i'm annoyed when authors try to use that as a character-building device. so when coach rhemann's husband, our token slavic character who otherwise entertained me by some lively dialogue, served jean the obligatory traditional dish it made me roll my eyes. stop overcompensating, nora😅

the slurs thing i would categorize not as a diversity writing issue but as a villains writing issue. the slurs and different flavors of bigotry are nora's way of having her bad guys kick a puppy in these new books. jeremy's conservative family are racists and homophobes so we hate them - no particular depth there. riko is also shown to have been a raging homophobe - it just makes sense, you know, on account of him being evil and all. except in the og books he and nathan didn't need to kick any queer puppies to be successfully and convincingly evil. i'm not posthumously defending riko lol i just think it was more compelling when problematic words used to be said by the characters we're generally meant to root for and the bad guys used to be more fucked up and scary. to come back to your point: i agree that nora's best option would be to forgo the bigotry and focus on other ways how to make her villains evil. (maybe even some plot-related ways who knows who's to say)

(lol this reminds me when i first read son nefes it was so jarring to see the f-word in the scene where nicky and the twinyards are first introduced to the team - not bc it's a problematic word but bc it's signaling a completely different level of discourse. like we were just fighting for our lives with murderous sociopathic mafiosi and now this? oh you sweet summer children😅).

and yes, as per the previous tgr diversity ask, i do think that the real issue is that poc characters in jean's books just aren't interesting enough / lack depth / however you want to put it. like, nicky is biracial. yes, his mexican identity isn't foregrounded much and yes, nora might have tapped into some problematic stereotypes - but despite all that nicky is undeniably a whole ass character. he has a function in the story, he influences the plot and the relationships around him, he has iconic lines and dedicated scenes. he's totally the comedic relief archetype but also i'm never in any danger of mixing him up with any other character - bc all of them are distinct and help each other stand out even more. i can't speak to how satisfactory this rep is but given a choice between a whole ass character like nicky and someone like laila who i can't tell apart from the rest but who does cook traditional foods, speak her language to her parents and get called slurs - aka the trifecta of poc rep written by a white author lol - i will always prefer the former.

totally agree with the last point. if we're in a trans inclusive 2000s sports au other utopian time period inconsistencies can be allowed. i would have preferred it the other way round tho. i enjoy the 2000s vibes of aftg and i don't like how the new books feel as if they take place in 2024. i want to escape into the distant past (2007) thank you very much

They met on a blizzarding night when Χερουβείμ αζιραφάλι {Cherub Aziraphali -Did you know Greek was the first language the bible was written in?-} outsmarted the Seven Great Pyrenees guard dogs and snuck off to go get a snow flower for The Shepherd {God} when he found the sheep he had helped years ago after a wildfire, now short-haired and with multiple burn scars, Το κοράκι που έπεσε για τη δημιουργία {The crow who fell for creation} or just Πεσμένο κοράκι {Fallen crow} for short.

Πεσμένο κοράκι tried to kill αζιραφάλι, the Cherub only living because of its unnaturally long teeth that it used to chip the Hebridean's bottom left horn in self-defense but not without being poked in the face by Πεσμένο κοράκι's long-spiked collar that he claimed was his halo. The 4-horned soon recognized the ram and apologized profusely for his aggression, telling him of his journey since he was chased off by the guard dogs. αζιραφάλι listened patiently, afterward resting with the lonely Jacob.

In the morning, αζιραφάλι realized the herd had moved on without him and despaired, blaming the Jacob for keeping him much too long. They parted ways, but ultimetly were never able to stay away from each other for too long. After a few years, the ram had given up, becoming friends once more with Πεσμένο κοράκι. The problem was, everywhere the Jacob Sheep went, havoc followed, and they both were soon claimed to be omens of death. But αζιραφάλι made it so that afterward, happiness would ring out, so everyone was confused about what kind of omen the two sheep were.

{This might not follow the story of Good Omens perfectly, but I mean. I made them sheep so I don't think that really follows either.}

Neil Gaiman is accused of sexual assault, sexual coercion and rape

A third woman came forward a couple of days ago.

None of the problems people had with the other podcast (and to be honest, I think those arguments mostly just represent the denial and bargaining phases of grief) apply to this one. This woman says she only came forward because the Tortoise podcast made her aware she wasn't alone. Until then she'd believed him when he told her it was just her. Good Omens fans, I'm sorry if you're hearing this from me (although unfortunately it does matter that you hear it from someone). If you had heard but tried to look the other way -- listen, I know this is shocking and heartbreaking. It is of course up to you how you participate in fandom from here. But please stop tagging your fandom posts "Neil Gaiman". You are ensuring that anyone searching for information is going be swamped with Good Omens fanart and S3 countdown posts and pictures of socks(?) and photos of actors who have nothing to do with this. They might then conclude that there's nothing to these allegations. And that matters: at present, aside from Rolling Stone and the two podcasts, this story hasn't received much press attention. The latest survivor says that she tried reaching out to reporters and was told her story "wasn't enough." So at least for now, social media sites do matter as a record on this. When you drown out this story with your fandom feelings, you are helping, whether or not you realise it, to cover it up. And considering that he seems to have targeted fans who trusted him... I don't even want to finish that thought. So please, stop. Do what you want in the other, more relevant tags. But you're likely to have a better experience if you start trying to separate it from him, anyway.

"Oh..." Neil clicks his tongue in Andrew's head, Andrew cringes away from the sound. "I shouldn't tell you about her either."

"Why not?"

"She wouldn't like it. She's really secretive and doesn't trust anyone. Especially some random human."

"I'm not some random human. You said it yourself: I'm your host. If you can't trust your host, who can you trust?" Andrew says, trying his best to reason with Neil. The thing is he doesn't need to know anything beyond what he's been told. But he's nosy and he likes knowing things. "I have three friends and only one of them knows where I live. I can keep secrets."

"Okay. What do you want to know?" Neil asks, sounding suspicious.

"Hm... Among other things how a human-witch ended up with a demon for a son." Andrew starts. And then Neil is quiet so long Andrew wonders if he's fallen asleep. But finally, the demon in in his head sighs.

"Full story?"

"If you trust me with it."

"When my mother was a teenager, she accidentally made a deal with a demon involving her first-born. Only she didn't quite read the fine-print. She didn't know her first-born was going to be the demon's son." Neil swallows. "She had me nine months later."

Andrew chews the inside of his jaw. "What, like... You're demon Jesus? Is this a Virgin Mary situation?"

"No, not exactly." Neil answers softly. Andrew is quick to read between those terrible lines and clears his throat.

"So what? She got attached and didn't want to give you up?"

"I suppose. According to mom, he was supposed to come for me on my thirteenth birthday. Two weeks before that, mom packed me and all our things into her car. We've been running ever since. It's sort of pointless, but she refuses to hand me over even now."

"Touching. And how long has this game of demon and mouse been going?"

Neil lets out a breath. "Twelve years last month."

What is UraIchi Week?

An event to celebrate the Urahara Kisuke x Kurosaki Ichigo ship. For this year, the "week" will stretch for 9 days, with 8 days of optional prompts and 1 free day on Ichigo's birthday. There is no sign-up, and everybody can participate. Completed works and wips are both acceptable, and any type of fanwork (fanfic, fanart, gifsets, fanvids, etc.) is welcome. NSFW and/or potentially trigger-y content is allowed, although please remember to tag your works properly.

The ship itself can be written romantically or platonically, as lovers or friends or even enemies, so long as it stars these two characters together in some way. Poly ships are also fine so long as Ichigo and Kisuke are still the focus of the fanwork. And crossovers and fusions are also allowed even if it isn’t one of the given prompts for the event. Basically, anything goes, and the only criteria is that it has to be UraIchi-centric.

🧼 Soap x CIA Analyst!Reader – First Impressions

Soap side-eyed you the second Laswell introduced you, whispering to Gaz, “She looks like she’s still taking her SATs.” He was expecting some hardened spook, not someone with oversized headphones and a hoodie that said “I void warranties.”

You were cross-legged on the floor of the tech lab, surrounded by open laptops and wires, eating cereal straight out of the box like it was your natural habitat. To Soap, it looked less like a military assignment and more like someone had broken into a server room and just decided to stay.

Your first words to him were, “Nice fade. Did the clippers run out of battery halfway?” It caught him so off guard that he blinked twice before laughing—half offended, half impressed.

He stood there stunned, staring at you like you’d just challenged him to a duel. Soap was used to respect or at least intimidation from new recruits—not some teenage hacker roasting his haircut in front of Price.

He tried telling you a dramatic story from a mission in Syria, thinking it’d impress you. But you didn’t even look up from your laptop, just muttered, “Cool. I crashed a North Korean satellite once by mistake.”

You assumed he was all biceps and zero brain cells—just another loud guy with too many guns and not enough security clearance. He, on the other hand, was sure you'd burst into tears the first time someone barked at you over comms.

Within the first week, the team was betting on how long it would take before one of you snapped. Either one of you will kiss one another or one of you will put a bullet through someone’s head. The tension between Soap's broody energy and your dry, deadpan sarcasm was enough to light the entire barracks on fire.

One morning, you accidentally rolled your chair over his foot and didn’t even look up. He groaned loudly, overdramatized the pain, and later filed a fake report accusing you of “reckless driving of government-issued swivel equipment.”

You called him “Bootcut Barbie” after walking past the gym and catching him flexing in the mirror. Instead of getting mad, he grinned and started calling you “Control Freak Barbie” every time you told him to use a stronger password.

Neither of you noticed how often you gravitated toward each other during team meetings or meals. You always ended up sitting next to him—whether it was for sarcastic banter or the occasional smirk exchanged across the table when Laswell got frustrated.
